Sailing club starts mission to teach veterans the sport

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Operation Set Sail has launched at the Indianapolis Sailing Club.

The idea was formed giving back with some brainstorming from Fishers City Council members Cecilia Coble, David George and Bob Solomon.

George and Solomon are both avid sailors.

“We came up with the idea for something extraordinary at the Indianapolis Sailing Club to honor and empower our veterans through sailing,” Coble said. “The idea is to get them to learn how to sail.

Once they learn, we want to bring kids with disabilities on to the water to sail as well.”

In addition to children and adults with disabilities, Solomon said eventually they would like to open up Operation Set Sail to police officers, firefighters and emergency responders. But teaching the veterans all the aspects of sailing began in April.

Solomon, a Carmel resident, said some of the veterans are doing well but some might have financial hardship.

“We use the word empowering because we want to focus on veterans who have had a hard time, who have post-traumatic stress,” Solomon said.

Solomon said U.S. Army veteran Greg Reece has been instrumental in starting the program.

The plan is to take some Indianapolis area veterans along with Solomon and George to a week-long journey, with the highlight being the 46th Annual Figawi Race Weekend from May 27 to 29.

The Massachusetts sailboat race goes from Hyannis to Nantucket May 27. Two days later, they race back to Hyannis.

“We got inspired because we take the wounded veterans on the Nantucket race over Memorial Day weekend,” Solomon said. “These are special veterans the Nantucket Holiday for Heroes takes. Some of them are severely injured, and we took them four years in a row on a 50-foot sailboat. The first year was a smash hit.”

Solomon has done the Figawi Race 26 years in a row. George has sailed it for 15 consecutive years.

Jim Jordan, a U.S. Coast Guard member from 1968 to 1972, will help the veterans learn to sail.

“Sailing is a great sport and a good sport for others to try out,” said Jordan, who has been sailing since 1975.

Jordan, a Fishers resident who is a member of the Sailing Club, joined the Coast Guard because of a love of being on the water.

A fundraising event was held last year to start the Operation Set Sail program. A second fundraising event will be held July 8 at the Indianapolis Sailing Club.

“This is an event that showcases all branches of the military,” Coble said. “It’s an event where you can bring your kids and learn about the history of our military and talk to the veterans.”

Solomon said the funds raised in the 2016 event will help the group pay for the veterans who need financial help to make this year’s trip.

AARP Smart Driver – A driving refresher course from AARP Driver Safety will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 18 at Allisonville Meadows Assisted Living, 10410 Allisonville Rd. Free smoke alarms and tests – The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign is a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. People of all ages are vulnerable to home fires. The Red Cross encourages everyone to call 1-888-6841441 to make an appointment to test existing smoke alarms and/or install free alarms in your home.

Reserve sheriff applications – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the position of reserve sheriff deputy. The Reserve Division is a group of unpaid volunteers empowered to assist full-time Sheriff’s Office staff with upholding the law and preserving peace. American Pickers to film here – American Pickers is returning to Indiana. The documentary series explores the world of antique picking by following Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and their team as they search for valuable antiques. They will be visiting the area in June.

Percussion team places 10th

By Desiree Williams news@currentinfishers.com The Winter Percussion ensemble at Fishers High School finished 10th at the Winter Guard Internaaccomplishment tional Percussion World Championships April 22 in Dayton, Ohio.

“It’s just a very tough competition at that level. Not only to make the top 10, but we faired ahead of some groups that usually are always in the top 10, so I just feel very good about the accomplishment,” said Chad Kohler, director of athletic bands and percussion.

The ensemble includes 40 students. It is similar to marching band, but it does not include color guard or winds. The students meet from December to late March to learn a piece that they perform at competitions throughout the state. Kohler said the end product is more like “musical theatre with drums.”

“They are equipped with the vocabulary of not only marching and playing, but a lot of dance,” he said. “There’s a lot of incorporation of that as well. There’s a lot of different layers to their performance.”

Kohler said last year wasn’t the ensemble’s best, so he entered this competition season in Open Class, which is the intermediate category. The ensemble started

winning competitions immediately by large margins. This spurred WGI, the parent organization for indoor percussion, winds and color guard competitions, to reevaluate the ensemble’s status.

WGI promoted the group to World Class, the advanced category, two weeks before the world championships.

“How we were promoted is a true testament of how the kids and how the staff works together,” Kohler said.

Kohler joined Fishers High School in 2006 and became the director one year later. He is in charge of hiring staff that teaches and trains students, finding appropriate music, creating the arrangement and more.

“My goal is to come along with students and make them better people through music,” he said.

Christianity to me

Commentary by Mike Colaw

The title of Christian to me isn't a badge of superiority but an admission of inferiority.

It's a public confession that religion I flawed and am willing to admit it.

The title of Christian isn't a defense of my mistakes but a full owning of them. Because I choose to identify as a believer and walk in the regular Christian community means I allow my brothers and sisters to hold me accountable. I desire righteousness more than being right.

The journey of a Christian for me isn’t a bondage that keeps me from pleasure but an amazing treasure map that shows me a way to the deepest pleasures. Like any good map, it shows where to go and where not to go.

The journey of Christianity to me gave answers to things nothing else could. The years of reading every science book I could find and watching countless lectures and documentaries left me with a little more clarity on what is but not why it is or even why I care about why it is at all! To me, Christianity isn't a rejection of the sciences but a joyous exploration of them. Over the years, I have swum in the beautiful sea of

speculative thought and observations of the physical world through books like “The Universe in a Nutshell” or “A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking. Many of my closest friends hold doctorates in areas like philosophy or medicine. None of us have problems with faith and science. As humanity looks ever deeper into what is, our hearts rest in the knowledge of why it is. A true sense of sentient purpose bathes discovery.

The artistic beauty found in everything from microbiology to astronomy has an artist and that artist has a name.

As a Christian, I am learning to separate identity and worth from money, power and influence. I believe my greatest joys and deepest pleasures come after this life, and the more I believe this the less I feel the fear of failure now.

To me, Christianity is limitlessly freeing.

I can be fully known, fully loved and know there is purpose.

French students highly ranked – Fourteen students of Hamilton Southeastern High School have ranked nationally in the national French contest (Le Grand Concours). Basma Aly received a gold medal in level 2C. Hannah Chapman, Sydney Crane, Jack Herzog, Nathalie McLeish and Megan Pitts received silver medals in level 2A. Alejandra May and Phoebus Yang received bronze medals in level 5A. And Erica Doan, Fatima Hassan, Emilio Rios-Rojas, Emma Rockwell and Molly Thomas received bronze in level 2A. Students were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French. More than 85,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2017 event.

West Point Summer Leaders chosen – Zach Ghera, a junior at Fishers High School, has been selected to attend West Point’s prestigious Summer Leaders Experience in June. The one-week seminar is designed to help selected juniors with their collegeselection process while Ghera giving them an idea of the importance of leadership and sound decision-making in their education, career and lives, in general.

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 , according to the Centers safety for Disease Control and Prevention, and the second-leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14.

The national research study conducted by USA Swimming Foundation and the Hicks University of Memphis shows 70 percent of African-American children and 60 percent of Hispanic children cannot swim.

The number is 40 percent for Caucasian children.

The YMCA, including the Fishers branch at 9012 E. 126th St., is doing its part to combat that with a free program called Safety Around Water.

“These courses are designed to show kids what to do if they fall into water,” said Terra Hicks, the program specialist

in the Fishers YMCA aquatics department.

“What are some skills they can use to get themselves back to the edge of the pool, whether it’s doing jump, push, turn and grab, which teaches a child to push off

The two-day class will be held at the Fishers YMCA May 30 and June 1 for ages 3 to 12.

The class times are 4:30 to 5:10 p.m. for an intermediate class designed for kids who are not afraid of the water and are just beginning to swim independently.

There is a 5:20 to 6 p.m. advanced class for children who can swim and jump into the deep end on their own. The 6:10 to 6:50 p.m. class is a beginners class for kids who are non-swimmers who are afraid or hesitant in the water.

There are a limited number of spots available due to safety ratios within the class.

The YMCA also offers three categories of swimming lessons, swim starters (ages 6 months to 3 years), swim basics (all ages) and swim strokes (school age, teens and adults).

Celebrating a quarter century Rotary club recognized for service to Fishers

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Fishers Rotary Club President Mark McSweeney said a lot has changed in the club during his time as a member. cover story McSweeney joined the club in 1999, when membership was less than half of what it is today, which is more than 100. This year, the club is celebrating 25 years since its charter.

“I think we’ve done a good job of steadily expanding,” McSweeney said. “We have grown right alongside the city. Where Fishers was in 1992 compared to where it is today, when we chartered in 1992 we had 40 charter members, and we have well over 100 members now.

We’ve grown, and we take pride in the fact that we’ve tried to remain relevant along the way. We hope that we will for the next 25 years as well.”

The Fishers Rotary Club annually raises approximately $8,000$12,000, distributed to multiple charities twice a year. Donations are split between local and international groups.

Locally, the club volunteers with Servants at Work, an organization that builds wheelchair ramps for those in need in Marion County.

Previously, the club volunteered at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during different races to raise money for the club. When it became too difficult to organize volunteers for IMS, the club partnered with the City of Fishers to operate parking services during various city events.

“Obviously, we are a service-based organization,” McSweeney said.

“In a nutshell, we have contributed in excess of a million dollars to date to well over 100 unique different recipients over the past 25 years. We are going to do things sprinkled through the year to recognize that 2017 represents 25 years.”

Mayor Scott Fadness recognized the group at a recent meeting, issuing a proclamation that declared March 25 as Fishers Rotary Club day.

Incoming president Mekey McAllen will take office July 1. Her goal during her term is to build on the club's vibrant work in the city.

“I always want rotary to remain relevant to our community, so I don’t want us to become stale or one of those clubs that just meets on Friday and doesn’t make a difference,” she said. “I want to make a difference in the city and attract people that want to make a difference. Our mayor is very vibrant in what he’s doing, very forward-thinking, and I just want us as Rotarians to be right along with him. What can we do to help that and assist our city? That’s why we are here, to make that kind of a difference. I want us to always be right there along with everybody else to figure out how we can help drive some of the initiatives the mayor has.”

McAllen has been a Rotarian for four years.

Divided notions Commentary by Terry Anker If we were to name only one, what would it be? Certainly, we thinking humans establish our lives in ways that set personal priorities. But if we had to identify a single thing, around which the whole of our lives was formed, could we do it? We might put our faith at the top of the list, or family, or career, or education. Others could hold that avoiding an addiction to be of the highest order – each moment would place that desire to precede all other needs. Often, our priorities shift over time. Those of us who put our children at the zenith would have surely not considered such a structure before beginning a family.

Whatever the prioritization, we all follow some chart helping us to navigate our way in the tumultuous sea of daily existence.

Alas, for some, we think so precious little about what our Polaris is (or should be) that we are led by it with little notion of its presence – or worse, our dominion over it.

Over the past 64 years, North and South Korea, a people divided, have followed different guiding stars. The leaders of the North set as their first objective the preserving of their political regime. As such, military needs consume most resources, and national priorities are tightly constrained. The South followed an intellectual path to free markets and open democracy.

Today, there are vast differences, evidenced by these divergent roads, with two of the starkest being life expectancy, which is 25 percent greater in South Korea, where personal freedom exists.

If priorities set long-ago can destructively constrain our future growth, do we fall behind in failing to routinely review our own guide stars?

Wanted: Volunteers Editor, Each year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the state of volunteerism in the U.S. For the past decade, the number of volunteers each year has declined.

As we await statistics for 2016, I’d like to encourage you to explore ways that you can get involved in a nonprofit organization of your choice this year.

Based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 62.6 million people volunteered in the U.S. in 2015, providing service worth an estimated $184 billion.

The facts show that only one in four Americans volunteered in 2015. Women volunteered more than men, with working mothers giving the most of their time. People aged 65 and older gave an average of 96 hours during the year while those between ages 25-34 gave just 32 hours a year. Married people with children volunteered more than single people. The age group that gave the least to nonprofit organizations were millennials; Only 18 percent of people ages 20-24 volunteered in 2015.

At Conner Prairie, we were fortunate enough to add 41 new people to our volunteer ranks last year, bringing our total number of volunteers in 2016 to

nearly 500 people, including more than 100 ages 10-18 in our popular youth volunteer program. Combined, our adult volunteers gave 21,658 hours of their time. If it weren’t for our volunteers last season, we would have had to add 11 fulltime staff positions at a cost of nearly $500,000.

Our community’s nonprofit organizations need volunteers of all ages, interests and abilities. We rely on people who are committed to our mission, care about sustaining and enhancing our future and want to get involved in helping us reach others in deep, meaningful and lifechanging ways.

On the heels of National Volunteer Week, which was April 23-29, it is an ideal time to think about how you can get involved with a nonprofit organization and how you can make a difference in the lives of others through volunteering. No matter what your age, background or life experiences may be, you have something to offer. Volunteering is extremely important to our organization. For you, it may be one of the most unique and rewarding experiences of your life.

I am not a crier. Never have been. I don’t know if it’s because I grew up with four sisters and, in an effort to dishumor tinguish myself from the herd, decided to lock that emotional shtick down, or if it’s thanks to my 50 percent British blood that left me with a bit too much Yorkshire stoicism. Regardless, I rarely get weepy. But lately, I’ve noticed myself tearing up at the stupidest times.

Have you seen the new Volkswagen commercial with the family traveling cross-country to deliver the grandfather’s ashes to the Pacific? Throat-clogger. Or the Principal Financial one where the dad has to quit school because his girlfriend gets pregnant, then 20-odd years later graduates, right behind his son? Gulp. At least I can blame these moments of weakness on the magical manipulators of marketing.

But the other day I was sitting in the always-long drive-thru line of Chick-FilA, opening the mail, and out of the blue I begin full-on sobbing into my steering wheel. The culprit? Graduation information from the high school! I mean, seriously!

I’m counting the days until “Geoff-Geoff” is on his merry way, out the door and onto independent, adult living. But between the dorm-fridge raffle announcement and information on cap and gown pick-up, all I could do was think about my first baby boy. Towheaded and talking at an elevated level to be heard above his invasive twin siblings.

Playing 5-year-old rec soccer for the Green Power Rangers and being the tallest kid on the field. Breaking his collarbone in a pickup football game at a Derby party and our telling him to “Shake it off, you’ll be fine.”

Jeeze-Louise, I’m choking up as I type!

I pride myself on keeping my emotions in check, but this graduating from high school thing has me worried. I much prefer a sappy Hallmark ad. Peace out.

Mary Ellen went to a conference last week in Chicago and left me at home.

Alone. When she abandoned humor me last year, I realized I did not know how to run the dishwasher or operate the convection oven.

I felt guilty about all the dirty dishes she came home to, but I am really good with the clothes washer, so to make up for the mess in the kitchen, I went through Mary Ellen’s laundry basket and washed everything. I don’t know what she ate in Chicago, but when she got home two days later and took everything out of the dryer, nothing fit.

Mary Ellen and I watch so many different programs that I can’t keep the story lines or characters straight. I continually ask her to hit the pause button so I can ask questions, like: Is that a good guy or a bad guy? Is that his wife or sister? Is this a flashback?

The first night she was in Chicago, I checked out the DVR to catch up on some shows. There were shows like: “Underground,” “Billions,” “Homeland,” “Feud,” “24” and “Designated Survivor.”

“Is that the show where he beheaded two of his wives?”

“No, that was when he played Henry the VIII in ‘Wolf Hall.’

Mary Ellen made me promise to quit watching TV so she could get some sleep.

I searched under the couch and between the pillows, under the coffee table and behind the lamp. I wanted to turn off the TV. But it wasn’t remotely possible.

Childless women increasing – There has been a small but significant increase in the number of childless women in their early 30s over the past decade, according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey’s fertility supplement. In 2006, 26.2 percent of women ages 30 to 34 were childless, meaning they had never given birth to a child. By 2016, that number had risen about four percentage points to 30.8 percent.

They all go through this school and progress and grow.”

said. “It was a competition, but I looked at it more as a growing opportunity because you got class every day, so you are able to push yourself and learn more about yourself every day rather than just one time on stage.”

The Rust sisters have received several scholarship offers for short -term summer and year-round training.

“We are definitely going to be able to stay together for the summer,” Julia said.

“We aren’t competitive. We don’t think about that. When she wins something, I’m really happy because it feels like I won.

When I win something, she is super-happy for me. We push each other in a good way."

and step, with a bold contrasting Monroe color Holland paver as the border. It helps identify the step tread as a safety feature, too. The natural limestone wall cap pays homage to the neighborhood and introduces an additional level of variety.

Miracle of the Hanging Church Commentary by Don Knebel Members of the Coptic (Egyptian) Church trace their origins to Saint Mark, who they believe visited Egypt in 42 A.D. travel and became their first patriarch. Today, the Coptic section of Cairo is known for a unique church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom they attribute a famous miracle.

Built as early as the seventh century, the church rests on a foundation of logs and stone extended between the tops of the south gate towers of the Roman-era Babylon Fortress, creating the illusion that the church was suspended in the air and giving the church the name Al-Muallaka, meaning “the Hanging” or “the Suspended.” Centuries of accumulated debris have raised the ground level around the church by about 20 feet, nearly burying the towers and eliminating the illusion, but entering the church still requires climbing 29 steps.

The interior of the church has been remodeled repeatedly, but one of its most distinctive features remains. The vaulted wooden ceiling is reportedly intended to

suggest an inverted Noah’s ark. Seven huge icons above the altar are among the church’s 110 icons, one of which, called the “Coptic Mona Lisa” because of its iconic portrayal of Mary and the infant Jesus, was created in the eighth century. In the late 10th century, the Fatimid Caliph who ruled Cairo reportedly challenged Patriarch Abraham, who had recently remodeled the church, to prove that faith could move mountains, as Jesus had taught. Copts believe that after Abraham prayed for three days to Mary’s icon, she appeared and gave him the power to cause a section of a mountain near Cairo to break off and move, earning the Caliph’s favor. Whether or not the story is true, the Hanging Church remains a symbol of the ongoing Christian history of Egypt, and the mountain is still called “Mokattam,” meaning “broken off mountain.”
