Will is 13 and has cerebral palsy. In addition to the struggles associated with his disability, Will’s mother Dr. Lyn Jones is constantly searching for suitable playground equipment for her son in local parks.

An Alta Glide Inclusive Glider Swing was installed in Fishers’ Holland Park last month. The swing is different than other wheelchair-accessible swings, which Lyn said seem almost like a cage and are isolated from other playground equipment.

“What makes this swing really cool is that it can fit a lot of people on it,” Lyn said.

“It has benches so a wheelchair or two or three can roll on there. The swing moves back and forth and it kind of bounces. It is really inclusive, so Will can be on there with his friends who are in wheelchairs and who aren’t in wheelchairs. He could be on there with his grandparents.”

Another plus, Lyn said, is the new swing isn’t isolated.

“It was put in Holland Park, right there in the heart of Holland Park,” she said. “Right there, not far away from everybody else.

There’s no cage around it, and it’s very welcoming and opening and inviting.”

A major player in the swing’s installation was Fishers City Council member Cecilia Coble.

“Not a lot of action was taken until Cecilia Coble became city councilwoman,” Lyn said. “She got (deputy mayor) Leah McGrath and (parks director) Tony Elliot to listen. So, it was finally finding the right person to not just listen to me but hear me and make a difference.

Your heart grows toward the place your money goes Commentary by Mike Colaw A few years back, I started investing in penny stocks. I don’t put religion my real retirement in penny stocks, but I was curious how they worked and why people love to invest in them.

One of the stocks I bought into was a drilling company in the South. Until I bought in, I had never heard of the company. After I bought into it something interesting happened – I started to care.

It wasn’t all that noticeable at first, I just found myself looking through websites about drilling every so often.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21) When people read this verse they almost always think of it in two ways. First, they think it only applies to church stuff. It’s actually an observation of the human heart in general. Second, they wrongly walk away twisting what it says. Most people

think the verse states that you should give to the places that have your heart. That’s not necessarily wrong, but it’s not what this verse says. It is saying that your heart will grow toward the places that you place your money. Your money goes first; your heart follows it. We all pay things to take our hearts. It could be cars, technology, stocks, a house, clothes … you name it. If you are investing a significant amount of your resources toward it, your heart will grow that direction. This is good and bad news. The bad news first is most of us are growing our hearts toward trivial things.

The good news is today you can begin to grow your heart toward things that really matter. How? Invest in them.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Many college students spend time interning in their field of study or spend a semester abroad, but cover story not many have had the same opportunity as Fishers High School graduate Lauren Butz.

Butz, 20, spent last semester at the White House, in the Office of Presidential Correspondence. Twenty-three interns were sent to Washington, D.C, from Indiana University. Butz graduated FHS in 2014 and is majoring in law and public policy. One of her responsibilities at the White House was answering letters written to former President Barack Obama. Specifically, she was assigned to the Energy and Environment Portfolio, which at the time encompassed the Dakota Access Pipeline.

“The story hit major media sources on a Friday, and when we came into the office Monday, there were 45,000 emails sent over the weekend just over Dakota Access Pipeline,” she said. “It was hard, because for the longest time they didn’t know how to address it. Throughout his presidency, Obama made a point of addressing the letters flowing into the White House. The Office of Correspondence would send him 10 letters each night, and he would read and respond to them.

“Any intern, volunteer or staffer, if a letter moved you or you felt the president could read it, you could sample it,” Butz said.

A sampled letter then went into a queue of 300, where the final 10 were hand-picked for the president. One of Butz’s letters was read by the president.

“It’s really fortunate to a see handwritten response to one of the letters I also read,” she said. “There’s such a direct, personal connection that something you read and moved you also moved the president.”

In addition to the plethora of things she experienced, Butz also heard Obama speak to her and the other interns at the end of her semester. He answered a handful of questions the interns had.

“Toward the end of the semester, the president spent time talking to us,” she said. “We met President Obama in the East Room and took a large group photo, and I shook his hand. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

Butz’s mom, Heather Butz, said her daughter has always been interested in government and politics.

“She would follow news outlets from back in her early teens,” she said. “She has also always stood up for the ‘little guy’ and wanted to make an impact on this world.”

Lauren Butz, who spent last semester interning at the White House in Washington, D.C, said now that she’s returned to IU, everything has clicked.

“Obviously, with my major being public policy, D.C. was the best place I could have possibly gone to get fully exposed to all the inner workings of the government and learn how decisions are made,” she said. “It’s crazy to see how transformative of an experience it is. The things my professors are talking about seem so real and not so far away.

It was a very crazy, cool kind of thing.”

Lauren said her dream job is to make a difference.

“I’m on track to go to law school,” she said. “(My dream job is) definitely something in the government, maybe heading an agency one day. But as far as that goes, I don’t know much beyond that I want to do something that will make a difference and make Indiana a better place to live.”

Commentary by Terry Anker The path to a happy life and fulfilling career is rarely a direct one. In fact, modern times seemingly dictate an intentionally circuitous route. We switch jobs with ever increasing frequency. We move from home to home. We jump from city to city, even state to state and nation to nation. The toll of this constant condition of change can be a difficult burden for many. We struggle to create and maintain long-term and stable relationships. We often become disassociated from our family and neighbors. Isolation is an emerging human crisis even as we are more connected than ever before.

The reasons that drive us to give up the known, the familiar and the constant to seek new challenges and opportunities are as varied as the ways that we define the fulfillment that we seek. Several years ago, I decided to veer off a bit from the secure and well-understood career I’d built in the previous 20 years to serve somewhat more directly. Long a volunteer and donor to a variety of causes, an opportunity was presented to help lead the local community foundation, to build its endowment and to elevate its profile. This month marks the completion of that tenure.

It has been a good, if imperfect, run.

Many metrics have been achieved and congratulations exchanged. Yet, like many at a moment of transition, one looks for summation of it all. What was learned? How could it have been better? Was it worth the effort? Given another at-bat, would we look for the same pitch?

As I return to a life more familiar, I will miss the one that I’ve come to live. But happiness is found in its pursuit. And, in that, I’m a lucky guy.

Make a difference Right NOW Commentary by Christina (Chris) Miller, Jackson Township Trustee “Hey, we’re out of toilet paper.” We have all said those words! Then we just go to the store to buy more. Right? But what if you were one of the many people who relied on Indiana’s food stamps program, EBT? Did you know that EBT does not cover such items? Toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, hand soap, laundry soap, diapers, feminine hygiene needs and many other basic necessities are not available with an EBT card. These are items that, when you need them, you need them Right NOW. That is why the Hamilton County Federated Republican Women thought it was an easy decision to start the “Right NOW” campaign to help people who are either not employed, underemployed or stretched due to circumstances beyond their control. Many Americans in Hamilton County and beyond are one paycheck away from being homeless. Food pantries can help those that have some income stretch with their dollars. Many of these people work but do not qualify for food stamps, and thus have an even harder time making it. Unfortunately, many programs designed to help people in need

can accidently penalize people who find jobs by reducing or cancelling EBT benefits, leaving them behind in bills and now faced with no help feeding their families.

We are blessed in Hamilton County to have a great network of food pantries.

The Right NOW campaign’s focus is to help with those items not covered by food stamps, but which are essential to basic quality of life. Our goal is to help.

We are Republican Women in Hamilton County, giving help to ease the needs of women. We need donations of toilet paper, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene items and diapers. These items listed are truly needed and of course not for just women, but women as mothers, wives, grandmothers and caretakers want to be sure they are available.

If being quietly happy that my husband Doo is out of town is wrong, people, then I gotta be honest, I don’t want to humor be right! I love Doo, and I know he loves me, but a little space every now and again is a welcome respite from the demands of marriage. Can I get an “amen?”

No? OK. Let me break it down. Male partners are large children, especially during cold and flu season. They are needy, they can’t seem to act independently and more often than not, they pee on the wall instead of in the toilet. Sure, they work hard, and mine in particular is extraordinarily handy around the house. But their ability to begin and finish a task is often handicapped by their desire to eat, play on the computer, or in my case, watch the ever-depressing but admittedly entertaining poo-show that is the news.

So I am thrilled that Doo will be gone for a few nights, and I’ll have complete control of the kitchen, bedroom and remote. I’ll only need to mentally keep track of my four actual teenagers and not worry about whether Doo will be able to pick up from dance or help with homework.

Now, should you be calling me a horrible wife, know that Doo is probably enjoying the break even more than I am. He can turn on every light in his hotel room, keep the volume up on the TV and not be concerned with leaving the place a complete pit. He’s free to be Doo – an ADD, extraverted night-owl who temporarily has no parenting or spousal responsibilities whatsoever. Truly, this is a win-win scenario!

And the best part is, once Doo returns, I’ll have experienced just enough singleparenting to appreciate his love and support once again. So I say, bring on the spouse-free week! Yay! Peace out.

Troubling signs Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My mother drove her Buick until almost 90 … and sometimes faster. She was in great health at age 87, but humor it irked her that many of her able-bodied friends had handicap license plates that allowed them to park closer to the grocery store. She’d get out of her car and drag her foot along the ground to appear disabled. The A&P manager overlooked it. He wasn’t as lenient on the shoplifting charges, though. I admit that I’ve parked in the spaces that said: PARKING FOR MOTHERS WITH TODDLERS I don’t have a toddler, but when I did, there were no reserved spaces. By the way, the signs are sexist: men can obviously have toddlers, although they probably left them home with mom.

PARKING FOR EXPECTANT MOMS I once pulled into this space to hurriedly purchase a dozen eggs. Someone recognized me and pointed out to me that I was not pregnant. I won’t do that again, but just in case of a real emergency, I now carry a down pillow in the back seat.

PARKING FOR ONLINE CUSTOMERS ONLY Huh? These folks were too lazy to shop

at the actual store, and too impatient to have their merchandise delivered. Now they want their own parking space? To be fair, if you are pregnant and also dragging along two toddlers to pick up a car seat you ordered online, you should be allowed to park right inside the store.

Here’s one that annoys me: PARKING FOR TAKE-OUT CUSTOMERS ONLY Just because you ordered take-out doesn’t mean you should get a space in front of the restaurant. You were too tired to cook at home and too cheap to tip the waitress - and now you want a special place to park? If you want to feed your face quickly, there’s a McDonald’s drivethru right across the street from that Applebee’s.

I’d like a sign that says: DICK WOLFSIE ONLY. But here’s how I am different from take-out customers and pregnant women: If I’m not using my space, it’s all yours.

Scott Beck talks leadership

By Desiree Williams Attitudes, action and faith are important to Scott Beck, president of Beck’s Hybrids.

“Attitude and work leadership ethic play an important role in what we do and how we get along,” Beck said at the March 23 Hamilton County Leadership Academy’s community storyteller event at Beck’s hangar at the Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville.

Beck’s Hybrids was created in 1937 when Lawrence Beck and his son, Francis, planted a three-acre portion of hybrid parent-seed corn on their farm in Hamilton County. Eighty years later, it is the largest family owned seed company in the U.S., serving farmers in nine states.

Scott Beck became president in March of 2015 after his father decided it was time to pass the torch. Although they are family, Scott admits they have different leadership styles.

However, they do agree on the company’s culture. Approximately eight

LSS to host songwriters concert

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Bryce Ernest Taylor is so eager to perform in The Logan Street Sancmusic tuary’s Second Saturday Songwriters Showcase series that he decided to write a new song.

Taylor said the song is so new that it will not be found on any recording - yet.

“It was somewhat inspired by this upcoming opportunity to share the Logan Street stage with these two wonderful singer/songwriters,” said Taylor, who lives in Muncie.

Taylor will be joined by Jessie Phelps, Indianapolis, and Shawna Caspi, from Toronto, at 7 p.m. April 8 at LSS, 1274 Logan St., Noblesville. Phelps performed at a concert at LSS in 2016 and this is Caspi’s first appearance.

Taylor said he will likely play some songs from his 2015 album, “Lighter Than Air” as

well as some from his upcoming EP. “My songs have progressive folk and classic singer/songwriter influences, for sure, with strong vocals and lyrics, interesting guitar work and a good dose of finger-picking,” he said. “Listeners tell me my music reminds them of Paul Simon or James Taylor, who are definite influences. However, in terms of current artists, I aspire to have the energy and creativity of Jason Mraz, the songwriting of Ray LaMontagne or Jack Johnson, and the passion of Damien Rice or Ed Sheeran. My songs tend to be less about losing or longing for love, and more about the search for creativity and meaning in life and relationships.”

Alys Caviness-Gober, LSS secretary, said typically each musician will do three songs at a time, rotating over a two-hour period, with an intermission to give the performers a chance to talk to the audience and sell their merchandise and albums.

Canaday to appear in ‘Les Mis’

The 18-year-old Fishers resident said she can feel the rush when she takes the stage.

“I get real excited and my adrenaline is way up,” Canaday said. “I love the people I get to work with. It’s a great environment.

Everyone is encouraging. It’s one big family and I love it. Being on stage with them makes it even more special.”

Canaday is playing Cosette in Agape Performing Arts Company’s production of “Les Miserables” April 6 to 9 at McGowan Hall, 1305 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis. This is the third show from Agape, a new performing arts group based in Greenwood.

Another of Canaday’s favorite roles was portraying Glinda the Good Witch in the Center Grove Fine Arts Academy’s production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Canaday previously performed with the Hancock County Children’s Choir under the director of Gayle Roschi, who also has worked with Canaday with private lessons.

Canaday, who serves as a nanny for an infant, also does some cake decorating, crocheting and photography.

Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 12 Dough: 1 cup whole-wheat flour, 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided, 1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup warm water, 125-130 F, 1 tablespoon canola oil Topping: 7 medium fresh mushrooms, sliced, 3 plum tomatoes, chopped, 1 small green bell pepper, slivered, 1/2 cup sliced black olives, 1/4 cup chopped red onion, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon thyme, 1/4 teaspoon basil, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, nonstick cooking spray, 2 teaspoons cornmeal Directions: Heat oven to 475 F. To make dough: In mixing bowl, combine wholewheat flour, 1/2 cup all- purpose flour, yeast and salt. Add water and oil. Beat until

smooth. Stir in remain- ing all-purpose flour to form soft dough. Place onto floured surface and knead by hand until consistent and elastic, about 4 minutes. Cover and let stand 15 minutes.

To make topping: In bowl, combine mushrooms, tomatoes, green bell pepper, olives, onion, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, basil and garlic powder.

Coat 15-by-10-by-1-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle with cornmeal. Gently press dough into pan. With fork, generously prick dough.

Bake 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Cover dough with topping mixture. Bake additional 10 minutes, or until edges are golden brown.
