Revitalization of older areas to begin late spring

By Beth Taylor • beth@youarecurrent.com Two neighborhoods off of 96th Street will be the first to receive neighborhood infrastructure repairs to sidewalks, asphalt and curbs. Work on the Roxbury updates and The Pines neighborhoods, both established in the mid-1980s, will begin in late spring.

“Our strategy can’t just be about development to the north and to the east, so part of our strategy has to be about making sure what we already have is in good shape,” said Mayor Scott Fadness.”

Fadness said that maintaining the value of homes in Fishers is key to the city’s long term financial sustainability.

He also said that the neighborhood updates will work in tandem with the updates on the commercial portion of the 96th Street corridor revitalization. “The 96th Street initiative is well under way,” he said.

The Sunblest, Sunblest Countryview and The Orchard neighborhoods will receive similar updates later this summer. As part of the Keep Fishers Beautiful initiative, the city

plans to help with some work on older homes, possibly providing assistance for home repairs to senior citizens.

“Some residents in the western part of our community have said that they felt like Fishers left them behind,” said Fadness. “As the downtown redevelops, this area could become a unique place in the city with good, well-built homes and mature trees.”

“We’re fighting a war on two fronts. We are focusing on key growth areas, but we’re investing back into our older neighborhoods as well,” he said. It’s important to make sure every part of our community is vibrant, not just the newest and the shiniest.”

The city is also investing in the community’s parks. Holland Park received a half-million dollar update last year; a splash pad is coming this summer. Harrison Thompson Park and Heritage Meadows will each receive a new playground.

Fadness wants to avoid having Fishers face the same plight as the once-vibrant Castleton area. “Chief Kehl and I have spent a lot of time talking about keeping crime south of 96th Street,” said Fadness. “We’re going to be proactive rather than reactive.”

Zack Bernas, survivor nominated for Man of the Year

In 2004, at the age of 17, a senior Hamilton Southeastern football player Zack Bernas was diagnosed with Stage IV nominated Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Disease.

The cancer was aggressive and spread extensively throughout his body. Bernas received chemotherapy and was completely cancer-free within three months of his diagnosis.

During his treatment, he received the support of his football team and the Fishers community.

Bernas is now looking to give that support back. He was nominated for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year for 2015. He is competing against four other men all with the same goal in mind--to raise money for the LLS for cancer research. Bernas is hosting several fundraising events until the black tie gala on May 9 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis.

Donations can be made by purchasing tickets to the event, bidding on the silent and live auction items and attending one of his fundraising events in Fishers. There will be a March Madness bracket challenge, a shopping day at Dottie Couture and events at local restaurants. Some of the live auction items include tickets to Disney World, a bed and breakfast weekend and a trip to Chicago.

did other family members and close friends, as well. Bernas feels he owes his life to the advances in treatment due to the research of the LLS. “He felt compelled to give back because this organization helped advance treatments up until now that helped saved his life,” said Bernas’ fiancée, Amanda Dils.

If Bernas raises $50 thousand a research grant will be named in honor of Allan Ellis, the father of a family friend who recently died from acute myeloid leukemia.

Stan wins P.E. award

By Beth Taylor • beth@youarecurrent.com Heidi Stan, a wellness educator at Riverside Junior High School, was honored as the Midwest District achievement Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) at its 130th national convention and expo in Stan Seattle on March 17-21.

The award is given in recognition of outstanding teaching and the ability to motivate students to participate in a lifetime of physical activity.

Stan has been a wellness educator at Riverside Junior High School for the past eight years. “I’m lucky because there are five people in my department, and we borrow ideas from each other,” said Stan.

Stan said that the Riverside physical education program incorporates fitness daily. Students attend PE class three days a week and health class two days a week.

One of the goals is to keep the students active during the entire period. Whenever possible, they walk around the gym or participate in dynamic stretching to reduce “sitting and waiting” time.

“I really try to modify the way we do things to

make it a lifetime achievement. I don’t spend more than five days on an activity,” said Stan. I want to give them the perspective that they can do different things for fitness--it’s not always running and push-ups.”

“Many activities that were previously large group activities have now been broken down into small-sided games to minimize lines and substitutions,” says Stan.

Stan’s successful grant writing efforts have provided her school and district with funds to purchase much-needed equipment, including heart rate monitors, elliptical machines, adapted PE equipment, Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit, circuit equipment and even stability balls to use in the classroom as chairs.

“It’s flattering to be honored. It’s nice to know that your peers recognize what you’re doing,” said Stan.

An active member of SHAPE America and the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD), Stan has given multiple presentations at state and district conventions. She is also a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and Hamilton Southeastern Education Association.

Stan received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Indiana University.

Working in memory of HSE grad

By Nancy Edwards • news@currentinfishers.com An All-State athlete and HSE graduate known for her hard work, teamwork, optimism and devotion will be remembered during service an annual community service work day on March 28 for the community.

Carrie Colglazier, a 2002 graduate and Butler University student, was killed in the summer of 2003 by a drunk driver, along with her friend and recent graduate of Butler, DJ Rahn, from Elkhart.

“Carrie was very outgoing, enthusiastic and passionate; she made your day better every time you saw her,” said Athletic Director of HSE, Jim Self.

“She touched lives and impressed people just with all the different interests she had. She was just a unique lady.”

Colglazier, who won a scholarship to Butler, was a two sport All-State athlete in soccer and track and was a member of the FFA and National Honor Society at HSE. She won each major varsity team award, including MVP Defense her sophomore year, the Golden Boot Mental Attitude Award her junior year, and the MVP offense her senior year.

In addition, Colglazier was All County and All Conference for three years and ICGSA All State her senior year. She was a member of the National Silver Medalist Horse Judging Team and served as an officer for FFA and 4-H. “(Attending) HSE was the best thing that ever happened to Carrie,” said Karen Colglazier, Carrie’s mother. “She blossomed then and just embraced

every opportunity she had.”

Shortly after Colglazier’s death, Self, Karen and Bud Colglazier, Carrie’s father, decided to establish a scholarship in memory of Carrie. Funding for the scholarship, in its 12th year, comes from the community service work day. Members of HSE girl’s track and soccer athletes, along with FFA and National Honor Society members, are available for an eight-hour work day, with a minimum of a $25 donation per worker.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Carrie Colglazier Scholarship Fund, awarded annually at Senior Awards Night each May. The scholarship awards $12,000 over four years.

The scholarship is also funded by FFA Donkey Basketball and private donations.

Faced with terminal cancer, Army vet returns to Vietnam with an open heart

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Kent Maxfield summoned his three daughters together for a family meeting at his Fishers home on Feb. 14, 2013.

That day he learned he cover story was suffering from pancreatic cancer and the prognosis was not good.

If he did nothing, he had six months to live. If he had surgery, he was told he might have 2 1/2 years to live. Mayfield shared his outlook with his family.

“I had three choices. I could sit around and cry and feel sorry for myself,” Mayfield said. “I could wait to die. Or I could get busy living and I chose to do that.”

A bucket list that Maxfield had started after open heart surgery eight years ago took on added urgency. After a family trip with his daughters and their families to Puerto Rico last summer, just two major items remained.

Maxfield, who turns 70 on June 6, recently knocked off the major one by returning to Vietnam. Maxfield, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War for a year (March 1967 to March 1968) during the Tet Offensive, had long wanted to return. It was a trip his doctors doubted he would make last spring.

After having surgery and being on chemotherapy for several months, Maxfield was feeling good and went to Las Vegas on the year anniversary of his March 1, 2013 surgery. Yet soon after, a CAT scan showed the cancer had moved into his liver.

“It had metastasized and we had two tumors too close to my heart to do surgery,” said Maxfield, a 1963 Indianapolis Howe High School graduate. “They put me on aggressive chemotherapy. The last couple of CAT scans the tumors have shrunk. I’m feeling really blessed right now.

They can’t cure it, they told me that. But it’s going to keep me around longer. Some have seen it disappear from this chemo, but it’s maybe one percent.”

Maxfield went to Vietnam on an eight-day trip as part of Global Ministries People to People mission, returning home on March 6. Maxfield, who is divorced, has three daughters Laura Groom,

45, Lisa Maxfield, 44, and Cheri Weisheit, 43, and all made the trip with him.

Maxfield said his family has no history of cancer so he believes the cancer is a result of Agent Orange, which was used by the U.S. Military as herbicidal warfare in Vietnam. After being in denial for many years, Maxfield sees now that he has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Maxfield, who has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, had been touched by the children of Vietnam and wanted to return with love in his heart. While on the trip, Maxfield carried the same small Bible that he had with him on the battlefield.

“During the war, the kids would say ‘GI chocolate’ and they would try to see stuff on the side of the road,” said Maxfield, who retired in 2007 after being in corporate real estate for several restaurants. “You watch them play and it couldn’t have been here in America. Their toys were different. They take a stick and a rock or kicking a can around. They laugh and play the same way.

Going back I realize people are all the same. We look a little different and we have different mate-

rial things. The reception I got from the people in Vietnam was so loving.”

On the trip, Maxfield visited orphanages.

Before he left, friends from the Geist Christian Church Bible study, other members and friends donated enough so Maxfield could give $5,000 in scholarship money for Vietnamese youth to study social work.

“I felt guilty (America) pulled out because we left (the South Vietnamese) high and dry,” Maxfield said. “The genocide was up to a million people after we left.”

His daughters were glad they shared the trip with him “It was nice to see him get some closure to something that was hard for him over the years,” Weisheit said.

Lisa said it was “amazing to see the joy that it brought to him.”

The only major thing left on Maxfield’s bucket list is an Alaskan cruise which he plans to take this summer.

“Everybody keeps telling me I have to add to that bucket list,” he said.

Number one of his 60 items was to tell a woman he loved her and he did, but it didn’t work out.

“It’s amazing when you put these things together you think it’s going to be material things but it’s not,” Maxfield said. “It’s people that have touched you in your life.”

Sever government’s lengthening arm Our friends at Human Events sent a missive last week about the long arm of government getting longer. This time, the National Labor Relations Board on April 14 would like to make a law that businesses must provide employees’ phone numbers and personal email addresses.

Who’s telling the jokes? The U.S. Senate already has defeated the measure, and this week the U.S. House of Representatives is going to vote on a Congressional Review Act resolution that the Senate has already passed to tell the NLRB to stop using government power to benefit union bosses. Last we heard, doling out workers’ personal contact information is a desecration of basic privacy entitlements and will inevitably lead to workers being targeted for harassment at the hands of union leadership. As your fellow Americans did with respect to the Senate vote, you should tell your House representative that you want privacy protected by sending a virtual “Do Not Disturb” letter at http://friends.channeldemocracy.com. And, as Human Events noted: Unlike the government’s proposal, this letter is voluntary.

••• Last week, one of our managing editors, Robert Herrington, hit the nail squarely on the head, when he penned a column taking “nearly invisible” candidates to task. We’ll parrot here what he proffered. The act of public service is serious business, just as is running for public office. Many candidates have declared for the primary election, and some of them even attend public meetings, like those of councils and boards. Some. Others are content to just hit the trail. It seems to us that if one wants to serve, he or she should make it a point to attend and grasp the goings-on of such panels.

Knowing the issues, challenges and opportunities and fully understanding them are separate animals. Ask your candidates (unless they already serve): Do you attend the meetings, and what have you gleaned from them? Then listen carefully. It will help you cast an informed vote on May 5. You are going to vote, correct?

A big week

It has been a big week. They all are; but, this one seems especially packed, back-to-back, with all the things that keep the adrenalin pumping. Life has a way of reminding us that it is in charge.

In Singapore on business, Carolyn, my bride of almost a quarter century now, emailed to let me know that her Mom, self-sustaining and independent into her 90’s, needed to move from the condo, where she’d lived the whole of the 10 years since her husband of 55 years had passed, into a place where greater care could be given her – at least for a little while. So, Carolyn and the boys made the trip to north suburban Chicago to visit and check the transition.

The very next day, I returned to the US and my family found its way home for our reuniting. Our oldest has discovered that competitive college ultimate Frisbee can be a dangerous contact sport. His surgery to repair the shoulder damage incurred a week or so back was scheduled; and

we wanted him to be home, rested, and ready to go.

Work, delayed by inattention, piles up. Laundry, delayed by inattention, piles up, too. But with a bit of triage and good luck, we hit the necessary, review the less pressing, and hold-on to the rest. Life is unimpressed with our project management skills. Word came that Carolyn’s Mom died a little more than a day after the visit. While unwelcomed, the news was not unanticipated.

So, we’ve planned arrangements. We helped our boy through his surgery (all went as hoped).

We worked a little (I even wrote a column). We managed to wash a few delicates. And, it’s only Wednesday. Maybe the best thing to do when life overflows is to let it. Could we stop it if we tried and would it really matter?

How would you react if your son caught the winning TD pass in the Super Bowl? Would you cheer? Cry? Twerk? I did all three when my extremely constipated 4-month-old son finally managed to “pass his own football” after an hour of straining and screaming. Honestly, I couldn’t have been prouder! The next morning, our momentary trauma long-forgotten, I vowed to add juice to his diet, and that was that.

Then, five years later and still constipationignorant, I found myself at a Promptcare with an obscenely hot physician, trying to explain how, even with laxatives and a children’s enema, my infant daughter couldn’t go. I watched in horror as he nonchalantly “extracted” the blockage with a Q-tip and then lectured me on the importance of dietary fiber. Not my finest parenting moment, to be sure.

Now, thanks to another child, I’m finally an expert on children’s constipation. He’s had it so bad that we’ve been seeing a pediatric G.I. for more than two years. Part of his problem is his diet, which rarely sees a fruit or a vegetable, but the other part is just his body. His intestinal tract hasn’t matured enough yet to process foods properly. There’s nothing I can do for his genetics, which I blame entirely on my husband, but I can address what he eats.

Unfortunately, that’s a lot easier said than done. After all, he can’t down 12 espressos to stimulate his bowels, and Mueslix just tastes nasty.

Our main course of action has been Miralax, which is exactly as the name implies, a miracle laxative. The beauty is it’s “tasteless, odorless, and dissolves instantly in liquid,” so I can sneak it in hot chocolate fairly easily.

Next up are the fiber supplements. Two candy-like tablets a day plus Benefiber sprinkled on and in anything he eats. We’ve also switched out Wonder Bread for its brilliant imposter, whole-grain white, and changed to iron-free vitamins. As for the MIA fruits and veggies, he’s only come on board with canned pears and peeled apples, neither of which provide much fiber, but it’s a start.

Hypothetically, we should be able to wean him off all this subversive counter-constipation “crap” any time now, but on the few occasions when we’ve forgotten to administer his “meds” for several days, he’s reverted right back to a strung-out 6 year old, red-faced and crying on the toilet. According to his doctor though, he’s a healthy normal little boy who may just have to deal with a laxative addiction. And I’m okay with that, as long as he says “Hi Mom!” while holding the Lombardi trophy. Poop out! Please!

It will take place in the Grassy Knoll behind Kona Grill and Mitchell’s Fish Market. Kids will be places in three age groups. 0-3 year olds will hunt from 10 to 10:30 a.m., 4-6 year olds will hunt from 10:30 to 10:50 a.m., and 7-10 year olds will hunt from 10:50 to 11:15 a.m. All participants must register, limited number available. • Fishers • There are two hunts. One is through the Kiwanis Club of Fishers Station at 1 p.m. on April 4 for 2nd graders and younger at Roy G. Holland Memorial Park. Donations will be accepted, and there is no need to register. Picture opportunities with the Easter bunny are also available. Event will be held rain or shine. The second event will be hosted by the City of Fishers, the 34th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Have not found other details for this yet.

• Noblesville • The Noblesville Parks Dept. and Hare Chevy will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 28. Noblesville Sunrisers Kiwanis will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the Forest Park Inn from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Activities begin at 10 a.m. with the hunt starting at 11 a.m. There will be more than 10,000 eggs to claim.

• Westfield • The Westfield church’s event is one of the largest and most exciting Easter Egg hunts in Indianapolis. 15,000 eggs

will be dropped from a helicopter. This year’s event will take place April 4 at Imagine Church, featuring three age-specific Easter egg hunts along with face-painting, a free photo booth, inflatables, a live DJ and a huge obstacle course, which is new this year. Pistachio Cake Original recipe makes 1 - 10 inch tube pan Ingredients: 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix, 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant pistachio pudding mix, 4 eggs, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/2 teaspoon almond extract ,7 drops green food coloring Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan. In a large bowl mix together cake mix and pudding mix. Make a well in the center and pour in eggs, water, oil, almond extract and green food coloring. Blend ingredients, then beat for two minutes at medium speed.

Pour into prepared 10-inch tube pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly pressed. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Original recipe makes 20 servings Ingredients: 2 cups white sugar, 7 cups water, 2 tablespoons instant tea powder, 1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate, 1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate, 2 cups cold water, 2 cups vodka, 1 liter lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage Directions: In a 6-quart pot combine sugar and seven cups water. Bring to boil and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Stir in tea powder while hot.

Add orange juice concentrate, lemonade concentrate and two cups cold water. Chill in refrigerator. When cold, mix in vodka. Pour into a plastic container leaving room on top for expansion. Freeze for 24 hours.

To serve, scoop about 1 cup into a tall glass and quickly stir in 1/3 cup lemon-lime soda.

HSE creates fundraiser show

On April 24, the Purdue Varsity Glee Club will perform at HSE High School’s Leonard Auditorium, 1310 E. 126th St., Fishers, at 7 p.m. as a fundraiser show.

Several members of the glee club are local graduates: Ryan Straut, Trevor Peters, and Rob Mantock of HSE High School, and Patrick Montgomery, an FHS graduate.

Straut, a senior at Purdue University, created the fundraiser as a way to give back to HSE’s drama club and choir department. In addition, funds will support a scholarship for an HSE High School senior that has dedicated his/her participation in the drama club but will not be majoring in performing arts in college.

“The scholarship is to recognize, reward and encourage students and give back to those students given the opportunity to study whatever they want (in college),” Straut said.

Straut, who is majoring in computer graphics with a minor in forensic science, expressed his appreciation for the skills and qualities he developed in the drama club at high school, which he said has

Debits ’n Credits helps alleviate tax prep stress

By Beth Taylor • beth@youarecurrent.com With the opening of a second Debits ‘n Credits office in Geist, owner Melinda Owens, CPA now gets a double dose of what now open she loves best—helping people balance their credits and debits.

Owens wanted the name of her business to stand out from the crowd. “The rules have changed, so I wanted to use some creativity in naming the business,” said Owens. “It used to be that a CPA had to use their name as the business name, but not anymore.”

The office is on the second floor next to the barber shop at the shopping center on Brooks School Road. “People think it’s going to be really expensive because I’m a CPA—but that’s not the case,” she said.

During tax season—January 13 through April 15—Owens often amends returns from larger tax preparers as well as for those who file their own taxes using a software program. “With TurboTax, you need to know the rule behind the question.

Individuals might not understand the underlying meaning behind the question because they don’t deal with it on a daily basis like we do,” she said.

Owens is a Dave Ramsey endorsed local provider. “He does not agree with debt at all, so we don’t hand out loans,” said Owens. “Returns are coming in as little as seven days anyway, so I don’t think it’s right to charge interest for loans.”

Indy Doula Associates, or IDA, will celebrate their grand opening with an open house health at Source Yoga in Fishers on May 2. A doula is a trained and certified professional offering emotional and physical support to mothers before, during and after the birth process. IDA is unique in that they bring together four experienced doulas that can also provide informational resources, lactation services and much more.

The open house takes place from 1 – 4 p.m. and is an opportunity to find out about IDA services and Source Yoga is the host, not the IDA storefront. “We do not have a location,” explained owner, founder and doula Patti Crawford.

“We prefer to make things convenient. We meet in our clients’ homes or if someone wants to meet in a public place we do that.”

Doulas can be beneficial at any time during the pregnancy. “It’s never too late to have a doula because we will be there with you,” Crawford stated. “We want our clients to have a happy, healthy birth experience that they want. Our job is to help them navigate that.”

Answer: Yeesh … that guy sounds like a real peach. Even I would never call someone out to the whole company’s e-mail list.

(Side note: I was going to say “the whole company’s listserv,” but apparently that’s a trademarked word with a capital ‘L.’ Who knew?)

There are three prepositions you need to master here: “on,” “onto” and “on to.” “On” and “onto” are both used to refer to a position in relation to a concrete noun. “On to,” which we’ll talk about last, can be a bit more abstract.

To start simple, “on” is used as “a function word to indicate position in contact with and

supported by the top surface of” something. You can sit on a chair. A cup can rest on a table. Your cat can lie on your keyboard.

“Onto” is used to indicate movement to a position on an object. “Onto” is an action preposition, if there were such a thing. You walk onto a stage. You fall onto your bed. Your cat leaps onto your face. You get the picture.

“On to” is used abstractly to indicate progress toward something, e.g. “moving on to bigger and better things.” “On to” is not used with concrete nouns.

To summarize, you need to tell your co-worker to stop getting on your case. Tell him you’re onto him and his shenanigans, and that he needs to move on to a new hobby. And then pat yourself on the back for how clever that was.

On the day Christians remember as the first Palm Sunday, Jesus rode a donkey down the Mount of Olives from Bethpage to travel Jerusalem. All four Gospels report that Jewish followers acknowledged him as their Messiah by strewing branches (or coats) in his path, an event memorialized in a church near where the so-called “triumphal journey” began. Another church about halfway down the hill honors a less-well-known event during Jesus’ ride. Its construction unearthed some tantalizing suggestions about his earliest followers.

Jesus’ ride to Jerusalem followed a narrow road heading west toward the Kidron Valley that lies between the Mount of Olives and the eastern wall of the Temple Mount. According to the Gospel of Luke, as Jesus neared Jerusalem and saw the gleaming temple, he wept as he contemplated the city’s impending siege and destruction. In 70 A.D., as he reportedly predicted, Roman soldiers demolished the temple following a long and deadly siege of Jerusalem.

Because the Gospel of Luke was written after the destruction of the temple, many Biblical scholars believe hindsight played a role in the report of Jesus’ prophetic weeping. The Crusad-

ers who conquered Jerusalem in 1099 were not so skeptical. Desiring to plant a church wherever they could identify a Biblical tradition, Crusaders built a church where they believed Jesus had wept for the city. The church became a mosque when Saladin recaptured Jerusalem in 1187 and later fell into ruins. In the 1950s, the Franciscans built a church known as “Dominus Flevit” (the Lord Wept) near the site of the original Crusader church. The small church, in the form of a teardrop, honors Luke’s story of Jesus’ weeping. An arched window beside a “crown of thorns bush” provides a spectacular view of the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock now atop it.

During construction of Dominus Flevit, workers uncovered small stone boxes called “ossuaries” first century Jews used to store the bones of their dead. A few ossuaries include what some believe are Christian markings, perhaps indicating that people who welcomed Jesus on the first Palm Sunday may have chosen to rest forever along his path.

Loose gutters – Years ago, spikes and ferrules were a common method for hanging gutters. They do the job all right, but eventually the spikes work themselves loose. Pounding them back in is a temporary fix at best. One way to make sure your gutter doesn't fall off the house is to install fascia hanger brackets. Installation is simple: Just hook the bracket under the front lip of the gutter, and then screw the other side of the bracket to the fascia. Leave the old spikes in place – a spike head looks better than a hole in the gutter. If your shingles overhang your fascia by a few inches or you have steel roofing, buy the brackets with the screws built in (pictured). They cost more, but the head of the screw remains a couple of inches away from the fascia, making them a lot easier to install.

For generations, homeowners have been adding New York City modernist style to their kitchens and bathrooms by installing indoors subway tiles. These rectangular shaped tiles are excellent for creating a current, contemporary look that still feels very timeless. In 2015, subway tiles are being used in everything from backsplash designs to flooring and much more.

The subway tile design first debuted in the New York City underground subway system back in the early 1900s. The sleek, contemporary design quickly caught on with the general public, and soon the entire country was decorating kitchens and bathrooms with 3- by 6-inch, rectangular “subway” tiles. Over 100 years have passed since those first tiles were laid, and subway tiles remain as popular as ever. Ceramic is still the most popular material for the tiles to be crafted from, because it is easy to clean and maintain. However, subway tiles can be found in almost every color, texture and finish imaginable.

The two most popular places where homeowners install subway tiles are in the kitchen and bathroom. But they’ve made the leap into other spaces that benefit from easy-care surfaces such as laundry rooms, basements and fireplace surrounds. Visually, the shape of the tile tends to draw the eye upward, which makes the space seem wider and the ceilings appear higher. This is especially true for the larger-sized subway tiles. In terms of maintenance, ceramic subway tiles are tough enough to withstand heavy usage for decades. Simply clean the ceramic tiles with mild, nonabrasive soap to keep them looking shiny and new.

can radically alter the look you are creating.

Many homeowners are choosing to install subway tiles vertically, instead of horizontally, which makes the ceiling look higher than it actually is.

This trend is being utilized in shower surrounds and bathrooms so that small spaces feel a little more luxurious. You can even use subway tiles to create distinctive border or frame patterns as well. Subway tiles are an excellent way to throw in a pop of color that won’t overwhelm the space. Popular colors this season include solid black, and bold primary colors such as Mediterranean blue, deep scarlet or mustard yellow. Use these in your kitchen or vanity backsplash to contrast with a more traditional cabinetry design for a contemporary look. And once a color choice has been selected, choosing a grout color that contrasts with the design is one way of putting a 2015 spin on the subway tile.

The time of year when homeowners take a closer look at their yards and begin to imagine the possibilities at hand. After Landscaping 38 years of helping families make their property more beautiful, and more functional, I’ve learned that you can help identify qualified landscaping professionals by answering five questions: Would you drive his or her truck? Landscape architecture is about attention to detail and aesthetics. These qualities ought to be evident in every aspect of your landscaper’s business – including the appearance of its vehicles.

How many employees does the company have? Is the company a one-person operation or is it comprised of a team of landscaping professionals that can complete a project in a few hours instead of taking several days?

How long has the company been in the landscaping business? Experience is impor-

tant. You don’t want to pay someone to learn how to landscape by practicing – and making mistakes – in your yard.

Where do their plants and trees come from? Plants and trees grown in the southern part of the United States are often sold at big box stores and may be less expensive, but they also are far less suited to survive an Indiana winter.

Can the company give you credible references? Before you invest in an outdoor living space or new landscaping, be sure to ask for references.

Remember, landscaping is an investment, not an expense. Choose a reputable landscaper, and it’s one of the best investments in your home you could possibly make.
