Human trafficking isn’t a comfortable subject, but Ascent 121’s mission is to provide community awareness.

Ascent 121, a faithawareness based group founded in 2013, held a human trafficking forum Feb. 26 at Fishers United Methodist Church. Ascent 121 volunteer Ryan Blakley led the discussion on domestic sex trafficking of minors. Blakley said the average age of sex traffic victims is 12 to 13.

Blakley said human trafficking, where victims are sold for sex or used in child pornography, is the second-fasting growing criminal enterprise in the world.

“We look to serve the teen survivors of trafficking,” said Blakley, a Westfield resident who is a vice president and branch manager with PNC bank. “I do a lot of speaking engagements. I speak to a lot of small groups, community training, we talk to teachers, social workers, court officers, police officers. If you work around a child and if you are aware what to look for, there are things you can do to be helpful.”

Blakley said parents, grandparents or other relatives can learn what to look for as far as children’s online activity.

The other thing Ascent 121 specializes in is recovery. Ascent 121 works with IMPACT, an Indianapolis residential treatment. Blakley said the teens go there for shelter after they’ve been rescued from a situation.

“We also present home-based counseling, evaluations and aftercare for those young women,” Blakley said.

The name of the group comes from Psalm 121.

The majority of trafficked teens have experienced prior sexual abuse, physical abuse or neglect.

According to figures by Ascent 121, Indiana has the second-highest rate of rape/sexual assault of teen girls in the nation.

One-third of female runaways are approached or recruited into the sex trade within 48 hours of leaving home.

Blakley explained it isn’t only runaways that are abducted and sold for sex. Often, it’s an older male attempting to present himself as a boyfriend, who forces a child into the sex trade.

“They’ve not only been exposed to evil by this abusive relationship, but all of the people who have come into their world abused them again and again,” Blakley said.

Drugs are often used to control the victims.

“A lot of the problem is some of these girls don’t understand what love looks like,” Blakley said.

Fishers, HSE team up for Mudsock 5K fundraiser

Bauer FHS senior Jonathan Bauer is involved in both FFA and FHS Dance Marathon. As a member of the FT5K committee, he serves as a liaison between the two schools.

Bauer said the FFA program, which operates in both schools, wanted to strengthen the connection between the two schools for a 5K to benefit Riley.

“By bringing Fishers and HSE Riley Dance Marathons together, we become a much larger and prominent force for Riley Children's Hospital,” Bauer said. “The rivalry has not been lost and a new competition was invented by this event. Whichever high school that brings

the most participants wins a Mudsock trophy.”

Bauer said participants don’t have to go to the school or be an alumnus to enter the race. When a runner registers, there is an option which school the person would like to support.

FHS senior Julia Drozd is involved in the race through dance marathon.

“I'm thrilled to see this event be put on as it is an innovative way to use the huge rivalry of Fishers and HSE and create a competition that will help the great cause of Riley,” she said.

“I am able to be involved Drozd greatly by helping with sponsorships, advertising and the creation of the logo.”

Drozd said communication about the new event has become important.

“I can tell after visiting HSE last week the excitement seems mutual at both schools,” Drozd said. “There's nothing like the power of competition and I am thrilled that we are able to use this rivalry to support such a great cause.”

Q: Did you have a favorite subject or class while you were at Fishers?

A: I don’t know what it was actually called, but the radio and TV class. That was how I got to do the news. You had to take a class before it and then there was a class to learn how to be a news anchor.

Q: Why did you like it so much?

A: I liked it a lot because I got to be creative and also got to learn how to talk on camera.

We also learned different aspects of being in a newsroom. We learned how to work the audio, how to cut between different frames and different scenes in the newsroom. It was fun to learn how a newsroom actually operated.

Q: What about your most influential high school class or teacher?

A: My most influential class was with Mrs. Blamey and she did ACP Comp. And the reason I love that class so much is because it helped me become a much stronger writer, and she was really good at helping improve our writing. She was also very straightforward and a very motivating teacher, so that helped me want to write better and take the time to do it whereas before, I never wanted to write all the time. So for me, it was a big thing.

Q: What do you miss about high school?

A: I miss all the people being in one spot, like all the people I was able to meet. They made Fishers High School great, and that was really fun. At least compared to other high schools, I felt like our high school was a great

community.

Q: Have you joined any organizations or teams in college?

A: Yes, I joined a lot.

I joined IU Dance MaraHillenbrand thon, a sorority and also started volunteering at an animal shelter. That’s my top three.

Q: Where do you want to go with public management? What’s your dream job?

A: Well, I should say it’s more marketing.

That’s kind of more of what my dream job involves, which is marketing relations and business relations. My dream job would be to work and do almost like the marketing for a really big organization or company that does a lot with giving back to the community. I love bigger organizations because they can have a more powerful impact sometimes.

Q: Do you have a specific location that you’re looking into?

A: I want to get out west at some point. I want to go to Colorado. As of right now, I’m probably going to be here.

Q: What are you up to right now? What are your goals after graduation?

A: I’m using my last class at IU to go abroad, and I haven’t been able to do that yet when I was in school, so I’m excited to do that. I’m going to go right now to Roche Diagnostics and work for them after graduation.

Q: Is there anything else you want to add?

A: I guess the big thing I want to say, if there’s advice for younger students or kids looking into colleges, is to get involved with anything in both high school and university because that helped me grow as a person so much. I learned so many different things about how to manage different things just by joining organizations.

These scholarships are to be used to complete education or upgrade vocational skills. One must be admitted, or cleared for admission, to an academic or vocational school that is state-licensed or accredited.

Quilters Guild meeting – The Mudsock Quilters Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. March 13 at Community Health, 146th Street and Cumberland Road. The program will be a demonstration of making a simple quilt called "Bricks".

Snowplow painting – INDOT East Central District invites high schools within district boundaries to paint an INDOT snowplow blade with original artwork to represent their school. What started as a summer job as a caddie for Hannah Vanderbosch has transformed into a full scholarship. accomplisment Vanderbosch, a Cathedral High School senior and Fishers resident, is one of 14 Indiana high school seniors to be awarded the Evans Scholarship, a full, four-year housing and tuition scholarship. She had the inperson interview at Long Beach Country Club in Michigan City. She Vanderbosch previously had submitted an application, an essay and letter of recommendations.

Vanderbosch, 18, will attend Purdue University to major in computer science and minor in ceramics.

The criteria include a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. It’s a one-year scholarship that is renewable four times as long as the students keep up their GPA. Vanderbosch has a 3.8 GPA. Vanderbosch, who played four seasons of golf at Cathedral, began caddying before her sophomore year. She learned about the caddie program at Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club through the Cathedral

“I wasn’t thinking scholarship-wise, I was thinking of a summer job,” Vanderbosch said. “About my junior year, I thought I could do this for a scholarship.”

The interview is to prove that the caddie has worked hard enough for the scholarship.

“I was still scared,” Vanderbosch said. “They make you wait that one week after the interview.”

Vanderbosch, who was the only female caddie at her club, said her favorite part of caddying was meeting people. When she started, she said she was shy.

“Just being with a complete stranger for four hours in a round, you learn a lot about them,” she said. “I’ve gotten a lot better with people skills.

Some of their stories are pretty funny.”

Vanderbosch started playing golf before her freshman year at Cathedral. Her older sister, Katie, also played for the high school.

“When my sister was playing, I never wanted to play,” Vanderbosch said. “I didn’t like watching it. I thought it was boring. Once I actually was able to play, I liked it."

As an Evans Scholar, she will live in a house with other members. To pay for their food and earn a little extra money, the Scholars wait tables at fraternities and sororities.

Each year, essays on “What education Freedom Means to Me” are submitted by area fifthgraders. The following schools participated: Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate, Fall Creek Intermediate, Riverside Intermediate, St. Simon the Apostle, Sand Creek Intermediate and St. Louis de Montfort.

Fishers Sertoma, a nonprofit organization, has been making financial donations and

performing volunteer work for a vast group of causes and organizations since its charter began in 2001. Dollars raised support organizations such as Prevail, which serves as an advocate for victims of crime and abuse in Hamilton and surrounding counties, and Lutheran Child and Family Services, a nonprofit which provides care and counsel to enhance the dignity and quality of life of those in need.

FHS swimmer Parrish earns Mental Attitude Award

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Earning the Indiana High School Athletic Association Mental Attitude Award for girls swimming came as a achievement shock to Fishers High School’s Lauryn Parrish.

“I had absolutely no idea — not a clue in the world,” Parrish said. “I was making bets with my friends that my best friend (Crown Point’s) Hannah Kukurugya was going to get it because she is one of the most amazing seniors in the state.”

Parrish received the award Feb. 11 following the state swimming finals at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI. Parrish finished third in both the 100-yard freestyle and 200 freestyle. Fishers placed third as a team.

“It couldn’t be a better finish not only for me but for Fishers High School,” said Parrish, who will swim for the University of Kansas next season. “We never got higher than fourth in a relay, and we got third in our 200 free. I was in tears after it. This has been the best ending of a season that I could ever dream

Parrish has watched as the program has grown.

“I came in with a lot of talent and we had some amazing seniors that instilled leadership in me,” Parrish said. “They showed me we could do something special at Fishers High School if we put in a lot of work and dedication.”

Parrish is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Athletic Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

She volunteers at the O’Malley Foundation, where she teaches autistic young adults to swim for exercise.

Parrish, who has a 3.4 GPA, plans to major in business at Kansas.

The IHSAA Executive Committee annually gives the award to a senior nominated by her principal and coach, who was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

The committee presented $1,000 to the Fishers High School’s general scholarship fund in Parrish’s name.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County commissioners and two mayors stood near railway tracks the morning of Feb. 28 as cover story they announced a portion of the Nickel Plate Rail Line might soon become a trail.

The joint partnership between the county, Noblesville and Fishers would transform the rail line into a 14-foot wide paved pedestrian trail connecting the two cities from 96th to Pleasant streets. The distance would be 9.2 miles.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said the county has enjoyed unparalleled success with the Monon Trail infrastructure.

“This is an idea worth exploring to have conversation with our community to turn the Nickel Plate Rail Line into a trail,” he said.

“We are proposing to connect by trail Noblesville and Fishers,” Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear added. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for all of us.”

Ditslear said the trail would add to the already existing 84 miles of trails through Noblesville.

County Commissioner Christine Altman, who has served at the forefront of establishing forms of alternative transportation throughout the county, voiced support for the partnership.

“We formed this partnership to preserve this corridor for transportation,” she said. “Transportation comes in many forms, and every commute starts with walking, no matter where you are. We still think this is a valuable corridor for mass transit, but at this time, the local communities don’t have local dollars to make that happen. We think the corridor will continue to grow in value. We are planning to do what we can to preserve this corridor for future generations so they can use their best decisions to make this a mode of transportation that makes sense at that time.”

Altman said in the future, other northern communities might join the Fishers/Noblesville partnership.

A cost estimate for the corridor transformation is $9.3 million. Two public informational meetings will be held. The first is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. March 21 at Fishers City Hall, 1 Municipal Dr., and the second is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. March 23 at Noblesville City Hall, 16 S. 10th St

The conversion of the Nickel Plate Railroad to a pedestrian trail from Noblesville through Fishers is an exciting next logical step in the development of Fishers as a city that works for all. From the perspective of a school official, this announcement from the mayors of Noblesville and Fishers and the Hamilton County Commissioners is welcomed with great enthusiasm.

Not only does this proposal open what could be the most visible city commitment to physical fitness and wellness, it also opens opportunities for students at all levels to participate and to contribute to the creation of a city feature that will serve citizens for many years.

Students who take ownership in their community are students who take pride in their community. From assisting designers in the planning to composing promotional material to establishing trailside plantings to adopting trail sections for maintenance, the opportunities for students to become vested partners in a major civic project are rich and varied.

This rail-to-trail conversion presents a unique “lab setting,” in which academic standards in math, language arts, science and social studies can easily be applied. The students and educators of the Hamilton Southeastern Schools stand ready and excited to assist the City of Fishers in developing this new community asset.

Distortions can be fixed The current political climate is proving brutal for everyone. Distortions are happening on both sides of the political spectrum.

Learning to have constructive conversation with the “other side” rather than the divisive distorted banter relies on the average citizen being thoughtful of our words. Challenging distortions is not a call for political correctness. Distortions offer dramatic effect but cannot offer the clarity necessary to see both sides of an issue. In his book “Feeling Good,” Dr. David Burns described a list of 11 Cognitive distortions. The three distortions I see most often in my political discussions are: • All-or-nothing thinking — You see things in black-and-white categories.

• Mental filter — You pick out a single, negative detail and dwell on it exclusively so that your vision of all reality becomes darkened.

• Labeling — When someone else’s behavior rubs you the wrong way, you attach a negative label to him: “He’s a loser.”

Whether you are interacting on social media, reading an editorial or listening to a pundit, I believe it is imperative to our public discourse that we acknowledge when others are clouding the issues with these types of distortions. By acknowledging distortions, we could move our conversations to the richer details indicative of sound policy addressing the concerns of all citizens.

Government policy should reflect a spectrum and not just one side. We need diversity in thought to make our communities strong and receptive.

Loving in two hearts Commentary by Terry Anker Families are complicated – even when they are not. Most of us have a dad and mom.

Well, we all, by the recipe, “must” have at least one of each to get the process started.

Once begun, there are any number of combinations that meet the standard. Sometimes, we participated at the origin – the ones that conceived and remained, choosing a mate, marrying and eventually setting our sights on shared parenthood. Others arrange family differently. But all focus, uninterrupted by the machinations of daily living, on delivering into the world one or more fully formed adult children ready to reproduce that which they have seen modeled at home – namely to propagate the species and bring forth another generation of us. There are countless among ourselves who stand up and carry the unrelenting yoke of parenthood.

None is better than the other. Yet, all are dedicated to survival in a sometimes hostile and inhospitable world by self-replicating and, in so-doing, continuing the line that

came before us. This month a good friend, long-ago adopted, reached out to his biological parents. Some 50 years ago, they, for many reasons, delivered an infant into the kind and willing hands of an adoptive family desperately awaiting his birth. But only now did that baby decide to announce his continuing existence to those whom he had imagined but not known.

Facebook made the connection. Messages were exchanged. Soon, regular telephone calls followed. Birth mother led to birth father led to step-siblings led to all manner of aunts, uncles and family penumbra. His “family” has long been firmly in place. Those who raised, loved and cared for him stand ready – still devoted – in earnest hope that his journey will fulfill. How do we live and love in two hearts?

Recently, I’ve developed a crush on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I love her spunky, “I’ll never die” humor energy, and the fact that she does not take poop from anyone.

But what I admire most is her practical take on balancing work, motherhood and marriage.

Basically, she suggests that you allow each area of your life to serve as a refuge from the others, and that on occasion, you become deaf.

It is this second little nugget of wisdom upon which I would like to expound today, my dear readers, for in my infinite experience as a teacher, wife and parent, I’ve found that pretending not to hear muttered cuss words, murmured criticisms and stream-ofconsciousness rants by teenage girls proves to be a great advantage, cutting way down on my stress levels and, consequently, the amount of Prosecco needed to dull the edge.

Think about it. Are we always better off when we correct young people on their choice of vocabulary? Is it always mandatory to fully engage with a color guard member who is ranting about some rifle spin or saber toss that she just can’t manage to land?

Sometimes, I find myself so worked up by my students’ colorful profanity or my husband’s insensitive remarks or the fact that my daughter has been spewing play-by-play dance drama for 28 minutes straight that I lose perspective on the bigger things in life.

I literally get sucked into the negative comments and the bratty shenanigans and forget that all things considered, I’m OK. So, I’m going to continue to heed the advice of Justice Ginsburg and occasionally go deaf.

I’m going to tune out my children’s word vomit when they aren’t looking for answers but merely to vent. And I’m going to pretend not to hear when a high-schooler drops the Fbomb two feet from me because his signature hashtag has been co-opted.

Although murderers' memorabilia is rare, many other gems like rare antiques and sports collectibles turn up more frequently.

“We see a lot of cool stuff like an Aston Martin, or some really beautiful jewelry, priceless antiques,” said Fishers resident Lee Parson, who owns the company with his wife Tiffany. “We sell everything and anything.”

Some examples include a 2009 Aston Martin Vantage that sold for $69,000; a vintage Lego collection sold for $4,200; and a vintage Mickey Mouse toy sold for $12,000.

Parson said the company recently started its marketing push for franchises in Indiana and other states.

“We can offer markets like Lafayette, Bloomington and Fort Wayne in the state,” Parson said. “We’re not offering it in all 50 states. We’re approved for 29 states right now.”

The franchise cost is $42,000.

Parson said 80 percent of Aether’s business comes from people downsizing.

“Their kids are grown and the parents want to move somewhere warmer,” Parson said.

Tiffany said most of the sales come from the four Ds: death, downsizing, debt and divorce.

“The three other ones, other than death, are the larger ones on why we have sales,” Tiffany said.

The company began in 2013 and has expanded into a few markets. Aether has seven full-time employees in Indiana and a crew of five in Naples, Fla. Lee Parson’s background is in antiques, collectibles, auction houses and antique stores.

“That’s what my parents and grandparents did for a living,” he said. “This is a natural transition.”

Formerly a single mom, Tiffany said she learned to be frugal and become familiar with second-hand stores.

“We put our expertise together for this service we provide,” Tiffany said.

‘The Cross and the Light’ comes to Carmel

By Heather Collins editorial@youarecurrent.com The Detroit-based international and critically-acclaimed musical experience “The Cross and the Light” theater will be performed March 10-12 at the Carmel High School auditorium.

“The Cross and the Light” depicts the story of the Passion, Resurrection and Pentecost of Jesus Christ. According to critics, “The Cross and the Light” adheres to the Biblical version. The play has been performed for more than 70,000 people across the world, including a sold out performance in Detroit with more than 22,000 in attendance.

Kelly Nieto, creator and executive producer of “The Cross and the Light” and former Miss Michigan winner and Miss America runner-up, said the writers were not afraid to tell the story of Jesus in contemporary terms, while adhering to the authentic story.

“We really speak the language of the 21st century, but we tell the greatest love story of all time in a really powerful, life-changing way,” Nieto said. “We like to say it’s a baptism of the imagination.

It literally immerses people in a beautiful cinematic image.”

According to Nieto, “The Cross and the Light” is for all Christians, music-lovers and theater buffs. Critics have compared the show to “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Godspell.”

“It’s important in this post-Christian world that we start proclaiming (Jesus’s) story with passion and the best production value possible,” Nieto said.

Shalom World TV will be on-site to film the Carmel performance and will be broadcasting it to more than 100 countries.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Oaklandon Civic to show ‘King Mackerel’

By Desiree Williams • news@currentinfishers.com After 20 years with the same show, Kevin Friedly is switching roles.

Friedly began working in community theater in the 1970s and found his role in “Pump Boys Theater and Dinettes.” He said the cast had such a great time they revived the play every two years for 20 years at theaters around Indianapolis.

Between that and his band, Audio Diner, Friedly didn’t have much time for other shows. Now, he is directing and starring in Oaklandon Civic Theatre’s production of “King Mackerel and The Blues are Running.” The show opens at 8 p.m. March 10 at 6450 Oaklandon Rd. The show follows the Coastal Cohorts, a group of three men who gather the people of North Carolina to raise money to repair a local inn that was damaged by a hurricane. It’s not a typical play, though. The three men act, sing and play instruments during the show.

“This one is so much more about the sound than the look,” Friedly said. “I kind of like that I get to be a part of all the pieces.”

Friedly wants to get the audience involved as much as possible. They will even play bingo at intermission. The winner will be invited on stage.

“The premise of this show is that we brought this audience here to raise money, so we actually can interact and do interact,” Freidly said. “I’m hoping their feet are moving and their hands are clapping.”

HSE to present ‘Oklahoma’

Fortunately, it is only to embrace his role as Jud Fry in Hamilton Southeastern High School’s production performance of “Oklahoma.” It’s Branson’s first role in an HSE production. The musical is set for 7 p.m. March 9, 10 and 11 at the school’s Leonard Auditorium.

“This dark role gives me a chance to give me some good psychoanalysis into the role,” said Branson, an HSE senior. “Jud isn’t the normal person you see walking down the street. He’s more of the creepy old man you don’t understand. It’s a fun role to play, and I’m grateful I have the chance."

Branson said Rod Steiger’s performance as Jud in the 1955 movie is a little unsettling.

“He’s an inspiration, but I see Jud in a little different light,” he said. “I’m taking an interpretation where he is a misunderstood man.

Those constant misunderstandings people have toward him push him over the edge.”

old Broadway stuff,” Lugar said. “I like getting in touch with her, she’s kind of a sassy, bratty kind of girl. It’s interesting because she’s supposed to be played as sweet.”

“I like how she is not afraid to say what she thinks. She’s very upfront,” Johnson said of Aunt Eller.

“It’s one everyone knows. Even if you don’t like musicals, you know ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,’” co-director Ethan Mathias said. “I think a lot of people are going to come out to see a classic, and we haven’t done a classic in a while."

Restaurant brings locally sourced food, beverages to Carmel

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A new Carmel restaurant will offer cuisine, beer and wine targeted toward a 21-and-older crowd. Stompin Barley, 14560 dining River Rd., Suite 140, opened Feb. 21.

Executive Chef Kyle Allbright, who formerly worked at the Oceanaire Seafood Room in Indianapolis, said menu items will be made from scratch and locally sourced.

“What I’m trying to do with my food is pretty much take downtown (Indianapolis) and bring it to Carmel, because nobody else is doing the from-scratch-type of deal,” said Allbright, a Fishers resident. “So we are getting away from the corporate chain feel and bringing people to a nice place to come in and have some wine, grab some good food and keep it reasonably priced.”

The price range is $6-15 for appetizers and small plates and $12-27 for entrees. Menu options include duck confit, seared scallops piccata, cedar plank salmon, various sliders, tacos and more.

“It’s just classic cuisine with a twist of modern flavors,” Allbright said.

Owners Dick and Alesia Deboer are from Noblesville. This is the couple’s first restaurant business. The restaurant is open 3 to 9 p.m.

Face painting and giant-sized Jenga and Yahtzee games were favorites among guests, but the highlight for many was riding the carousel, a piece of local history which turns 100 years old this year. Yep, five floors of crazy fun had by all with no kids allowed, only kids at heart!

In skillet, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil on medium-high heat and add mushrooms, cooking 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes.

Transfer cooled mushrooms to medium bowl. Add ground beef and salt, mixing until combined. Make four patties.

Add remaining olive oil to pan and cook burger patties on medium-high heat until

The goal was to design two areas that work together to create function and flow for this high-traffic area.

1. The updated laundry room offers fresh lines, easy to maintain granite counter tops and multiple built-in folding areas.

2. The mudroom area was redesigned to specifically suit the family’s needs. Cabinet drawers were installed below, doubling as a bench. In the center, the family needed open cubbies with hooks for coats and bags. The closed cabinets above add a versatile storage option.

3. The drum pendant light for this space gives the laundry room a causal, yet modern feel.

4. A bold, contrasting, sliding barn door provides a visual barrier between the two areas, while maximizing the usable space.

This is the perfect solution for this clean, functional space.

Before Background Info: This house is in the Village of West Clay in Carmel. Even though it was built in 2004, it lacked the functionality and convenient features that a busy family needs in a custom, updated mudroom.

Before problems: Common characteristics of intermediate spaces is that they are not used efficiently, which creates multi-purpose areas that become crowded and hard to maintain. The owners wanted to redefine their laundry room and mudroom into clean, functional and efficient areas that work together.

Red Fort: Symbol of independence Commentary by Don Knebel Shan Jahan is best known for building the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his favorite wife. His less famous Red travel Fort in Old Delhi, India, represents the epitome of Mughal architecture and has become a symbol of Indian independence.

Shan Jahan became the fifth Mughal Emperor in 1628 after the death of his father. With the Taj Mahal still under construction, Shan Jahan moved his capital from Agra to Delhi. In 1857, Indian soldiers initiated a rebellion against the rule of the British East India Company. The uprising failed and British forces occupied the Red Fort, where they put on trial Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal emperor. The British then used the fort as a garrison, damaging marble buildings inside the walls. Many of the treasures of the Red Fort, including the last emperor’s crown, are in the British Museum. On Aug. 15, 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate, signaling India’s independence. On each Independence Day since, the prime minister has raised the flag and given a major speech to crowds assembled in front of the Lahori Gate.

The Red Fort, with many of its interior structures restored and turned into museums, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007 and is open to the public. A visit provides a look at India’s glorious history.
