Conner Prairie unveils new exhibit news@currentinfishers.com Treetop Outpost will offer Conner Prairie visitors opportunities to engage with natural materials, experience archaeology, outdoors create nature-based artwork and explore music with instruments while a nature walk will connect to the prairie through woods along the White River.

But the highlight and centerpiece of the new 10,000-square-foot attraction will be the fourstory treehouse offering panoramic views of Conner Prairie’s scenery.

Construction began on the $750,000 project in late October by general contractor Hagerman Group. Treetop Outpost is in the southwest corner of the history park’s grounds, near the White River, and is expected to open to visitors July 1.

The new attraction was announced at Conner Prairie’s 2016 annual business meeting Jan. 27, at which the park also shared figures from last year while dinosaur paleontologist with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, PBS Kids host and author Dr. Scott Sampson was the keynote speaker.

After county GOP chair caucus, leaders look to future

Pete Peterson, president of the Fishers City Council, was named chairman for the Hamilton Co. Republican Party after a caucus politics that officials on both sides described as “ugly.” And it might not be over yet with a looming appeal.

Former Chairman Pete Emigh resigned at the end of 2015, leading to a race to fill his vacant spot up until the end of his four-year term, which is up in March 2017. Vice Chairman Laura Campbell, who is a newly elected member of the Carmel City Council, threw her hat in the ring, but Peterson was seen as Emigh’s choice for successor.

Last month, Campbell, who served as interim chairman upon Emigh’s resignation, took issue with 71 new precinct Peterson committeemen that were appointed by Emigh in November. Campbell said Emigh was trying to “stack the deck” in Peterson’s favor by choosing mostly Fishers residents and those close to Peterson.

Campbell removed those new names, which led to legal action by some, including Fishers Mayor

Scott Fadness, who was removed as a precinct committeeman. The caucus was held Jan. 30 with provisional yellow ballots for the new appointments. The other ballots were colored white.

Campbell won the white ballots 115-99, and Peterson won the yellow ballots 52-0, meaning that combined, Peterson won.

“It’s no surprise though,” Campbell said. “I’m very happy I won the white ballots because I think it spoke volumes.”

Campbell has decided she will appeal the decision and has until 48 hours before the next State Committee meeting, which is scheduled for Feb. 17.

Peterson said he doesn’t want to dwell on the past because it’s time for everyone to unite after this tough process.

He denied any past charges of favoritism and said he’s focused on the upcoming elecCampbell tions for governor, U.S. Senate and more.

“We have too many important races coming up,” he said. “We have to look to the future and come together. This year is too important.”

Campbell said she will remain involved even if she doesn’t win the appeal.

Drug arrest nets 500 lbs. of marijuana news@currentinfishers.com Approximately 500 pounds of marijuana were confiscated and one person was arrested after Fishers Police Dept. officers police searched a semi truck parked outside Walmart in the 8300 block of East 96th Street.

Shortly before 4 a.m. Feb. 2, a patrolling Fishers police officer observed suspicious activity around the parked semi. The officer met with two men who told the officer they were waiting to make a delivery in the area. Suspecting the men were being untruthful, the officer called a dog-sniffing K-9 unit to the scene.

The initial search resulted in the largest drug bust in Fishers history.

The two men were detained, and, after speaking with them, investigators determined only the driver had knowledge of the marijuana. The truck driver, 25-year-old Isaac Roberto Aristiga Bojorquez, Mexico, was charged with intent to deliver marijuana more than 5 pounds, a Level 5 felony. He was taken into custody and transported to the Hamilton Co. Jail.

Loved ones to run at Billericay

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Many may find it more difficult to work out during the winter months, but Sheri race Nichols, managing director of 131 Event Productions, tries to combat winter blues with the third annual Run4Love 5K Feb. 13.

“As a community we try to help people not let winter win, so to speak, to get outside with their families and enjoy a fun day of doing something together,” Nichols said. “We also thought that Valentine’s Day is mostly about being with the people you care about and what better way than running? It’s a ‘run with the one you love’ kind of theme.”

To encourage family participation, there is a group discount with prices at $30 per person for groups of four or more instead of the normal $35.

At the 2015 event, 400 runners participated and Nichols said she expects to sell out this year. The capacity is 700 runners, but based on current registration pace, she said she expects to nearly double the participation from last year.

“We are currently over 400 right now, and most people sign up the last two weeks of the event,” she said.

Despite whatever the weather decides, Nichols said the race will most likely still be run. The Fishers Police Dept. will work with Nichols on race day to assess inclement weather conditions.

“The past two years have been horrible with weather. The first year was 9 degrees, and people still came out,” Nichols said. “Last year, the wind chill was crazy, and everyone was out. We will still have it unless the conditions are extremely dangerous or unsuitable for the runners.”

Brownies and chocolate bars will be handed out, and healthier post-race food like oranges and bananas will also be available.

Adams earns Mr. Royal nod

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Hamilton Southeastern High School senior Sam Adams has had some special high school moments, such as performance playing the male lead in the musical “Legally Blonde” in 2015 and performing in Royal Edition, the school’s top choir.

Competing in HSE’s Mr. Royal talent show for seniors was a whole different experience.

“It was by far one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in high school,” Adams said.

“Most of the guys don’t have the performance background, so being able to share that experience with them was special to me. They all brought their separate energies to the table.

Everyone was so much fun to work with, and I had a really good time.”

As a bonus, Adams was awarded the crown of Mr. Royal by a panel of judges. Adams performed as his own quartet singing “Coney Island Baby,” with pre-recorded videos performing the other three parts. Adams had the various versions of himself arguing for comedic effect.

While winning was a goal going in, just participating was the main draw for Adams.

“All of us made an agreement we would stay friends,” he said. “Which is good because I really look up to these guys, all are very confident in their character, and they have to guts to do something like that.”

Fishers Sports Academy a new year-round option for area athletes

By Sam Elliott • sam@youarecurrent.com With a decade of local youth baseball involvement already under his belt, Beau Brunnemer has a passion for the sport and the Fishers famcover story ilies and children that enjoy it.

He’s served as president of the Fishers-HSE Youth Baseball League for eight years, and the goal of developing the skills of local players has led him to co-owning and running the new Fishers Sports Academy indoor facility along with Kyle Bach and Ed Woolwine — a former Big Ten champion outfielder at Michigan and FSA’s hitting and fielding instructor.

“Basically, four years ago, one of our travel coaches came up and said, ‘You know, if we’re really going to be a real travel program, we need an indoor facility.’ I told him, ‘Well, let me see what I can do,’” Brunnemer said.

“I kind of sounded it out with people, and we ended up, through the league, putting a little temporary place together behind Home Depot ... We bought some turf and took our nets and cages and L screens we normally had outside at Billericay Park and took them inside. I literally hung every wire in there and kind of set it up, designed it and put it together. All our travel teams signed up to be a part of it, and we basically had a real low-cost rent and utilities and people loved it.”

The group of Fishers-HSE youth teams didn’t last long in that location, however, but two years ago found its current home at 12910 Ford Dr. Plans for another location — to accommodate more teams and players from other leagues across the area — were pursued but ended up shelved, but the ownership group decided to move forward with its vision for FSA. “We decided to go ahead and do it for real in this space. We ended up building out this 14,000 feet here in this building and we’re hopeful that people support it,” Brunnemer said. “Our mindset is it’s a communityfocused place. It’s run by people that have a passion for our community and the youth of our community, and we’ve put our own money and necks on the line to kind of make it go — and hopefully it does.”

The facility has space for two teams to practice simultaneously with batting and pitching cages plus an infield and pitching machines, and also offers individual memberships and instruction from a staff of coaches with ample experience at the college and professional baseball level. Eric Blakeley — an all-Big Ten shortstop at Indiana University, recent transplant to Fishers and FSA’s general manager — was drafted by and played six seasons with the Seattle Mariners organization. He owns his own indoor facility in northwest Indiana and has seen firsthand how a space like FSA can benefit

local players.

“I think it’s huge. When I was younger, we never had anything like this,” Blakeley said. “In high school, I played three sports, and we went from one sport to the next, so I picked up a baseball bat about two weeks before the season, and my basketball coach was also my baseball coach … These days, with all the travel baseball and even the youth rec leagues, teams are starting to practice in November already.

Most teams are already getting together in January and starting indoor practices. It used to be where if you lived in a warmer climate, you had an advantage because you could get out and train more, but I think the Midwest is catching up nowadays.

“They want this to be a facility that’s for the community and for the betterment of baseball and softball in the Fishers area,” Blakeley said of FSA’s owners.

“That was the main thing for me in choosing to be a part of this because I’m the same way, wanting to be a part of the community I’m in.”

Since its soft opening in November, FSA is already hosting 42 teams from local leagues in addition to its own youth camps and training programs. Brunnemer hopes to expand FSA’s reach beyond local teams, eyeing corporate teambuilding events, church youth group lock-ins or fundraisers and even at-home moms or day cares looking for a place for children to play T-ball or kickball during the day.

“At the end of the day, I recognize very, very, very, very few kids will make the major leagues. But I’m a rec guy at heart, so I like to see kids having fun playing ball and their families being involved with it,” Brunnemer said. “Being able to foster that kind of opportunity — maybe kids come and have fun, maybe some take it a little more seriously and they want to get instruction and maybe make a high school team, of even better if they’re able to make a college team and they’re able to help get their education paid for — to me, that’s good stuff.”

Scavenger Hunt ends with proposal by Gail and Jay Blackburn of Carmel My now husband’s name is Jay Blackburn. We live in Carmel, have two beautiful girls, Grace (13) and Rachel (9). We have been married 16 years.

In July 1998, I was offered the opportunity to go to Europe and live for three months and work. Little did I know when I got this offer, my then-boyfriend, was planning out an elaborate proposal for me that was due to take place the very next weekend after I was offered the job opportunity. So it was also around our “dating anniversary,” so he just told me he had a surprise for me, and I wasn’t to put anything on the calendar for Saturday, July 11th. That morning he sent me off on a scavenger hunt.

First stop was a trip to the spa (which I love). I got three treatments and a light lunch at Phillipe’s Spa in Indy. At that end of it, one of the people working in there came into the dressing room and gave me a card (from Jay) that gave me my next destination. I was to go “Parisian” (now no longer at the mall) since I was about to embark on a European adventure.

I was to pick out my favorite perfume (with the gift card in the card) and ask for a certain person behind the perfume counter that would help me with my next destination.

I got another card (from Jay) that advised me to go to “The Gap” and pick something out (with gift card again) that I would enjoy while we would have a “gap” between us as we lived in two different countries (I purchased a pair of pants). To read the full story, visit youarecurrent.com.

Life’s like a box of chocolates

My husband, Armando, proposed to me on February 17, 2008.

Since we’d only been dating about a year and Valentine’s Day had just passed, it came as a complete surprise.

Armando had recently purchased a new home, and we had invited my parents and younger siblings over for dinner and to see the new place. After dinner, as we were chatting in the living room, Armando disappeared into the bedroom. He was gone long enough that I was beginning to wonder what he was up to, when he emerged with a box of Ghirardelli chocolates. He handed them to me and asked me to pick one. I am not a huge fan of chocolate, so I declined and handed them to my sister to pass around the group. As the box of chocolates made its way around the room, Armando insisted that I try one. I agreed and when the box was in my lap, I started to select one. He stopped me, telling me there was a special one he wanted me to try. Nestled among the chocolates, he had wrapped a beautiful ring in a Hershey’s Kiss wrapper. In front of my family, Armando asked me spend the rest of our lives together and I happily agreed.

Eight wonderful years later, it’s the best chocolate I’ve ever received.

The package deal by Mary Pierce of Noblesville My story is not a traditional engagement, because as my oldest son told my future husband, “She is a package deal.” (My boys were ages 9 and 14.) My future husband, John, had never been married nor had any children. That was December 2002.

Fast forward to March 2008, John told me to pack an overnight bag with clothes suitable for dinner. He had a surprise date planned. I did not know that he had already asked my father for permission to ask me to get married. We had discussed getting engaged, but I had no idea when it would happen.

So, on March 20, 2008, I packed my bag and off we went. I had no idea of our destination and no hints. We arrived at The Canterbury Hotel where John made reservations for the presidential suite, which was incredible.

We entered the presidential suite and there was an enormous beautiful floral arrange-

ment. I turned to John and said, “Wow, they take care of everything.” At that point John said, “I took care of that. They are yours. I took care of this as well.” He took out a small box, got down on one knee, and asked, “Would you be my wife?”

Of course, I said, “yes.” After I said yes, John said that you have two hours to call everyone and then we have reservations at St. Elmo’s and tickets for the Bruce Springsteen concert. Following a wonderful dinner, we went to the concert where everyone congratulated us. John planned and surprised me with the most wonderful, magical engagement.

We were married June 8, 2010. Both of our sons gave wonderful toasts. Everyday, I am thankful for a wonderful man who married a “package deal” and became the best husband and father a woman could ask for.

Circle City Sound has been delivering love songs for Valentine’s Day for more than 20 years. gifts Several barbershop quartets, wearing tuxes, from within Circle City Sound, travel all over the Indianapolis area to perform Singing Valentines.

“One time we sang to a fellow, whose wife bought the Valentine for him, while he was in the dentist’s chair,” said Circle City Sound member Jack Shaffer, a Carmel resident. “We’re singing to him while the dentist is cleaning his teeth.”

Shaffer said it is usually a two-day event when the quartets schedule these Singing Valentines, but with Valentine’s Day falling on Sunday this year, they will have quartets out for three days, Feb. 12-14.

Shaffer said each quartet will do 10 to 18 each day, depending how far apart the visits are that day. He anticipates they will perform 100 Singing Valentines.

Shaffer said they perform “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” or “Heart of My Heart.” They deliver a personalized Valentine’s Day card from the person who ordered it and a silk rose. The quartet also poses for a picture

My younger son is treating our family to a decadent breakfast for Valentine’s Day this weekend, almond French toast. This fabulous recipe is a fusion of two signature breakfast/ brunch classics, almond croissant and French toast and couldn’t be any easier to make.

Almonds! Their fragrance goes with chocolate and strawberries, and spells romance! Kids will have a blast making this recipe and will glow with pride when they present you with their creation!

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 large eggs, 2 large egg yolks, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 1/4 cups half-and-half, 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon pure almond extract, Pinch of salt, 4 fresh butter croissants, 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, 1/4 cup sliced almonds, Maple syrup or honey, Confectioner’s sugar (optional), Choice of fruit.

Directions: Preheat oven to 250F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a glass bowl, whisk together the eggs, yolks and granulated sugar until smooth. Add half-and-half, vanilla, almond

In a small pan, mix syrup or honey, 2 tablespoons of butter, almonds and almond extract. Heat for 5 minutes while mixing with a spoon. Remove croissants from oven and spread syrupalmond mix evenly; return to oven for 5 minutes. Serve warm accompanied by your choice of fruit.

U.S. 31 a boon to our region It seems like it was ages ago, when the project to convert the former Meridian Street into a freeway now known as U.S. 31 got under way in 2011. As was the case with the making of Keystone Parkway, we all lived with varying shares of delays, dust and dirt and shortcuts, but now that it’s all but complete, who really remembers it? As we wrote back when Keystone was in the thick of being converted, no one would think much of the inconveniences long term, because the pleasure was and is worth whatever pain was associated with the project. And thus shall be the fading memory of all that U.S. 31 entailed for motorists. We never imagined the day when we could travel in six minutes from 146th Street to I-465, but that’s reality, and we rather enjoy it. And speaking of the interstate, the flyovers are nothing short of incredible. Everything has flowed effortlessly for us, and we imagine it’s the same for you.

There are some finishing touches to be applied, but, oh, what a difference the new thoroughfare makes. Well done!

When does parenting get easy? I thought that once my kids grew out of the croup-prone, communicationhumor challenged phase, I’d be set.

Then I was certain that when my oldest could babysit my youngest, life would begin anew. Now that I have a teenage driver, I should be golden, right? But parenting only seems to be getting harder.

The reasons for my current maternal ulcer are one sick daughter and one underachieving son. Together they have pushed, nay, shoved my mommy patience to the brink. Two totally different parenting dilemmas thrust upon me as I also try manage a job, house, a husband and various other everyday minutia.

First up, my tiny dancer. Eleven days ago she began complaining of a headache, and while I first chalked it up to lack of sleep, by the fourth day of constant pain, I began trolling the internet for brain tumor symptoms. Everything checked out fine at the pediatrician; the doctor simply advised to up the OTC ibuprofen. But after a sixth day and multiple SOS text messages from her, I had to work some logistical magic over my lunch break to get an unauthorized neighbor to break her out of school.

The headache was getting worse, and had us both in tears that evening. It seemed I could do nothing to help my baby. Finally, on office visit number two, the doc found fluid in her ears and swollen glands. Thank Jesus! I can handle a sinus infection! We’re now on antibiotics and the headache has all but disappeared.

In the middle of this “What if my kid has cancer?” week, my husband Doo casually glanced at our 17-year-old’s grades, and completely lost his shtick. We ended up in a fight about the best way to encourage our son to work to his potential, and completely forgot to even ground the ne’erdo-well. How do we motivate a kid who is quite happy with “doing okay?” Should we step back or get in his face? I don’t know, and it’s driving me nuts.

So I ask again, “When does parenting get easy?” Peace out.

A whole lot of trouble Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My wife says I’m not a spiritual person, but shopping at Whole Foods is really a big step in that direction for me. humor I don’t like buying eggs and milk in the same place that sells snow boots, an unassembled chest of drawers and treadmills, like Super Target or Meijer. Those stores are Half Foods.

At Whole Foods, almost everything on the shelves is edible, except stuff that is fat-free, gluten-free or sugar-free … which, come to think of it, is almost everything.

Last week, I bought a bar of soap, wrapped in clear shrink-wrap. When I got out of the shower the next morning, I told Mary Ellen I didn’t think it lathered very well. “Is it because it’s organic?” I asked.

“No, it’s because you just washed yourself with a wedge of cheese.”

Mary Ellen’s shopping list is a model for anyone who wants to eat healthy: almond milk, kale and low fat granola. If I shop on my own at a regular supermarket, I smuggle in white bread, hard salami and doughnuts.

When we shop together, I’m on a very short

leash and the chances of getting any treats are zero – even if I beg. I wish my wife would treat me more like a dog. I deserve it.

Magazines at Whole Foods always have the words Yogurt or Yoga or Yogi on the cover.

One was called “The Road to Renewal.” I expected it to contain approaches to reaching nirvana, but instead there’s a check-list for what to take on your next journey. There was no mention of a positive attitude, or a degree of self-reflection or introspection. Instead, the top three items were underwear, white socks and sandals – important things to take on one of the several dozen mind/body retreats they offer around the world, and at a very lofty price, too.

So I guess you can be a new-age, WholeFoods-shopping, transcendental-meditating Buddha fan, and still believe in making a buck.

That’s the spirit!

I wish my wife would treat me more like a dog. I deserve it.

Who can resist a simple but incredible delicious chocolate treat? Chocolate pudding with strawberries is the perfect gift from your kitchen to your loved ones this Valentine’s Day! I cannot remember who said, “Sometimes the best dishes are the simplest,” but it is certainly true with this.

Note: Did you know that the word “chocolate” comes from the Aztec word “xocoatl,” the bitter drink made from cacao by the Aztecs and Mayans?

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons

cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 cups whole milk, 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1 pint strawberries Direction: In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch and salt. Add milk, whisking to combine, set pan over medium heat. Bring to boil, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, and cook until pudding thickens, 2 to 3 minutes. Turn off the heat, stir butter and vanilla.

Ladle pudding into four small bowls and let cool. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Brew tours run through May Commentary by Zach Dunkin Remember how you disliked history classes because they were all about the past, and you thought it was boring? county Well, what if you threw in a few beer tastings to the mix?

That’s what the Hamilton Co. Bicentennial Brews Tour is all about. Each Sunday afternoon through May 22, one can ride the BrewsLine bus to visit local breweries and sample beers with historical ties.

“Hamilton County has a long history with brewed and distilled beverages,” said Darryl Sopoci, owner of the BrewsLine, a Fishers-based beer tour operator. “The first known brewery in the county was around 1865. While we’re on the bus, I’ll talk a little bit about the history of the brewery, then the owners will share the back stories behind their beers and about how they are tying their beer to history.”

For example, Grand Junction Brewing Company’s Squirrel Stampede Nut Brown Ale was named for the fleet of migratory squirrels

that destroyed crops across the county in the 1800s. In addition to toasting Indiana’s 200th birthday at Westfield’s Grand Junction Brewery, participants can raise a glass at Deer Creek Brewery in Noblesville, Deviate Brewing in Carmel and Heady Hollow Brewing Company and Sun King Fishers Tap Room in Fishers.

Cost is $40, and the tour lasts from 12:30 to approximately 4:30 p.m. Make reservations at visithamiltoncounty. com/2016/. There are pickup spots in Carmel, Noblesville and Fishers, or if a group books 10 people, the bus will pick the group up at a designated residence. Bus capacity is 12 people.

“At each brewery, they are going to get anywhere from three to five samples, including a sample of a specially selected bicentennial beer,” Sopoci said. “Then, they can order more beer or food, or they can order carryout in terms of a growler.”

Riders also can legally drink beer on the bus because BrewsLine is classified as a limo service. Coolers will be provided.

Troop 617 makes large donation to IU Health Saxony

By Sam Elliott • sam@youarecurrent.com Fishers’ Girl Scout Troop 617 collected and donated more than 100 stuffed giving animals plus boxes of books for the children of IU Health Saxony.

Part of the HSE Service Unit, the troop’s eight members are working on earning the Bronze Award and needed a good deed they could organize for their community.

“The Bronze Award is the highest honor the Junior Girls Scouts can earn,” Stephanie Boyer, who leads the troop with Kerrie Wincek, said.

“They have to look for a need in the community, and then put a plan together and put their team together to help whatever that need is.”

The girls, fifth graders primarily at Fall Creek Intermediate School, chose local children in the hospital as the need they wanted to help.

“Kids who are in the hospital with a cast on or their leg elevated who are bored — they might as well read a book or play with a stuffed animal,” troop member Faith Mackenzie said. “It’s over 100 stuffed animals. There’s a lot … What we did was we made fliers, and we went to meetings with other Girl Scout troops, and some of this stuff was theirs, and some of it was ours. We’ve got two big buckets of boys stuff, two big buckets of girls stuff, one big bucket of books and a smaller box of books.”
