The Nonprofit Grant Committee awarded $331,000 in grants to support Ascent 121, Cherish, Conner Prairie Museum, Geist Half Marathon, Hamilton County Leadership Academy, Hamilton County Youth Assistance for Fishers Youth Assistance Program, Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation, Janus Development Services, Nickel Plate Arts, Spaceport Exploration, Youth Mentoring Initiative, the City of Fishers Neighborhood Matching Grant and the City of Fishers Tree Matching Grant.

According to the release from the city, these nonprofits provide cultural and critical services for residents.

“We are excited there’s going to be new leadership and a new vision (for the festival), and I think we can grow it bigger than what the group had done and they did a great job,” DeReamer said. “We think we can make it much better for citizens.”

HSE team advances to finals

At the young age of 12, Emma Pickering, a seventh grader from Fishers Junior High School, has already created sports quite the name for herself in the world of hockey.

She is currently playing for both the Cleveland Lady Barons U14 Tier 1 team and the Junior Fuel Bantam A team, and has nine seasons of hockey under her belt.

Tournaments have taken her all around the U.S. and beyond.

When Emma was just 2 years old, she learned to figure skate, but by the time she was 4 or 5, she was more interested in playing hockey. The influences came from her older brother and her uncle, who played in the National Hockey League.

“I could feel that she wasn’t herself (when figure skating),” Emma’s mom, Cindy Pickering said. “But when she transitioned into playing hockey, I knew her heart was there, and it was very natural for her.”

For most of Emma’s hockey career, she played on co-ed teams, but she was still often one of the only girls on the team. One of her current teams, the Lady Barons, is her first team to consist of all girls.

The Hamilton Southeastern Engineering Design and Development class placed fifth at the Falcon Best RobotSTEM ics Competition 2017 Oct. 28 at Bowling Green University.

The win advances the 33-member senior class to the Nov. 29-Dec. 1 regional finals in Fargo, N.D. The FBRC is part of the BEST program that promotes the growth of local competition sites across the U.S., maximizing the number of future engineers, scientists and technical professionals.

The regional finals utilize the same theme as the previous competition. Crossfire focuses on fire and rescue teams.

Each team builds a robot that competes in games against other teams’ robots.

“We are taking some pieces of the robot we built previously, but we will be making some changes (to make them) more successful,” said Sara White, one of the co-team leaders.

The team is eight weeks into its their robot.

The team also has to present a marketing campaign.

“As of right now, I’m the youngest on the girls’ team, so I’m playing against 14 years olds as a 12-year-old,” Emma said.

Emma has played hockey nearly all of her life, but she’s not done with it yet. All of her dreams for her future are centered on hockey.

“My future goal is to be able to play Division I women’s hockey at some college and hopefully get on the national team and maybe even go to the Olympics,” Emma said.

The Cleveland Lady Barons are looking for sponsors to help fund their transportation to and from tournaments.

Obituary: Lorraine Edna Good Lorraine Edna Good, 79, of Fishers, died Nov. 4 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis. She was born April 4, 1938 to Edmond and Angeline (King) Stupecki in Detroit.

Lorraine enjoyed drawing, painting, reading and journaling. She worked as a graphic designer and was a past member of St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church.

Lorraine is survived by her daughters, Diane (Jeff) Laker, Audrey (Bob) DeJohn

and Susan (Roger) Becker; son, Mark (Rebecca) Good; brothers, Dan (Joyce) Stupecki, and Rick (Nancy) Stupecki; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Roberts.

Obituary: Joe Sutton Joe E. Sutton, lifelong resident of Fishers and Noblesville, and president of his senior class at Fishers High School (Class of 1944), died Nov. 5. He was 91.

Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn (Hocker) Sutton; children, David Sutton of Broad Ripple, Shelly Sutton (Jeff Conrad) of Carmel, Andy Sutton (Carol Perez Sutton) of Houston, Texas, and John Sutton of Sheridan, Wyoming; as well as grandchildren, Kylie Conrad, Lily Conrad, Isaac Sutton, Helena Sutton, Noah Sutton and Owen Sutton.

Joe was the son of the late Floyd Sutton

and Ella (Guilkey) Sutton.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Sutton and Jerry Sutton; and one son, Dennis Sutton.

In addition to farmSutton ing land on the Sutton homestead in Fishers, Joe served in the U.S. Army (1956-1958) and operated a children’s clothing store, Sutton’s Tynee Nook, a thriving business on the Noblesville courthouse square, for 42 years.

Obituary: Meredith Joe Reynolds Meredith Joe Reynolds, 96, died peacefully in his Noblesville home on Oct. 31. He was born on June 12, 1921, in Hamilton County and reared on farms in the Castleton and Fishers area. Following graduation from Fishers High School in1939, he worked on the family farm until he joined the United States Army in 1942. He served in Europe during World War II, reaching the rank of Sergeant.

When he returned home at the end of the war, Joe became a full-time farmer, working first with his father in Fishers. He was married to Mona Aileen Jones on May 17, 1947, and together they purchased farm land in Noblesville and gradually built their farm while rearing their four children. They enjoyed traveling in the United States and in Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand, where they often visited other farm families. Joe retired from active farming at the age of 83, and the couple moved from their 1885 farm house to a new home in Noblesville.

He was a life-long member of the Fishers United Methodist Church, a 75-year member of the Fishers Masonic Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite and various other orga-

nizations, and a generous supporter of several charitable entities. Recently he traveled to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight and was recognized for his military service in the CarSutton mel Fourth of July Parade.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mona; parents, Irene Castetter Reynolds and Arzell Washington Reynolds Sr.; brothers, Arzell Washington Reynolds Jr., Jack Reynolds, Jerel Reynolds and Jay Reynolds; sisters, Joy Reynolds Wilson and June Reynolds Rhodes; son-in-law, Charles (Chip) Porter; and two nephews.

He is survived by his children, Nancy Reynolds Porter, Donna Reynolds (David Whitman), Jerry Reynolds (Julia Stephanus), and Brian Reynolds (Margie Huber); grandchildren, Eric Porter, Meredith Reynolds, Lauren Reynolds Kocal (Jake), Kelsey Reynolds, John Whitman and Chris Whitman; a great-grandson, Henry Kocal; brothers, James Reynolds and Jon F. Reynolds (Karen); and several nieces and nephews.

Dispatches Jury duty scam – Once again, a scam involving the threat of arrest for missing jury duty is hitting central Indiana. A victim answers the telephone and the caller says a warrant is being issued for not appearing for jury duty (or paying taxes or another offense).

The caller may give the name of a courthouse employee, a deput, or a name similar to an employee. The victim is then told to pay money to avoid arrest. These calls are fake – arrest warrants in Hamilton County are never served by telephone.

New advisory council forming – The Indiana Department of Revenue invites tax professionals, attorneys, business stakeholders, advocates and scholars statewide to be considered for appointment to the first-ever Commissioner’s Advisory Council to provide valuable input on tax administration for the state. Twelve members will be selected for two-year appointments. The council will meet quarterly beginning in late January.

Guerin makes memorable run

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Needing a break, Claire Gavin sat out her junior soccer season at Guerin Catholic High School. soccer “I wanted to come back because I loved the high school environment,” the Zionsville resident said.

Gavin is certainly glad she returned for her final go-around.

The senior goalkeeper, in her first varsity season, helped the No. 4 Golden Eagles reach the Class 3A state championship match before falling to No. 1 Penn 2-0 Oct. 27 at the Butler University campus in Indianapolis. Guerin had 15 shutouts, including 11 in a row, before the streak ended with a 4-1 victory over Columbus North in the semistate. This was the first year for three classes in soccer. Penn won the Class 2A title in 2016 and was runner-up in 2015.

“We were super-excited to play such a great team, and we were ready for the challenge,” said Gavin, who will play for Marian University next season.

Although the Noblesville school would be a Class 2A team based on enrollment, it petitioned the Indiana High School Athletic Association to play in the 3A class with

Head coach Jonathan McClure said excellent leadership was the key to the 16-2-1 record for the team.

“We have 10 fantastic seniors that set the tone for the season early,” McClure said.

McClure, who was Guerin's coach from 2008 to 2013, returned as the Golden Eagles head coach before the 2016 season. Only four girls had varsity experience prior to the 2016 season.

Senior Elle Vuotto, who will play at RoseHulman next season, had a team-high 16 goals followed by freshman Quincy McMahon with 11 and senior Cassidy Lindley, a Florida commit from Carmel, with 10.

Couple’s movement targets trust, healing relationships

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Emily and Scott Sutherland believe learning to love better might be the unifier to a divided world. cover story At first, the couple thought their efforts would be marriage-based, but the creation turned into much more. Love Better turned into a website, a podcast and, in turn, a movement for the Sutherlands. When Emily left her job of 20 years, she had an idea of how to orient the organization.

“We have known for a long time we wanted to talk about relationships, whether it’s in the community or marriage or relationships because we see the world we live in right now is so divided. And even within families, there is a lot of division,” Emily said. “Everything we’ve always learned or been about that really got us fired up was how we could love each other better in the home or in the community or across the world cross-culturally. We were learning how to love people better, so we could call the business Love Better.”

On the website lovebetter.world, blogs and a podcast series addressing relationships and learning to love better are available.

“The podcast series is conversations interviewing other people or the two of us talking about various aspects on how to love each other better in the world we live in,” Emily said.

Throughout the podcasts, Emily and Scott have learned vital information about why people act the way they do, such as when hurting others.

“One of the things we talked about a lot is there is always a reason someone is interacting the way they are,” Emily said.

“It is a children’s book but the adult reaction to it has been interesting,” Scott said.

book to give to their adult children. The story features life lessons for young and old readers. It is available for $14.95 at lovebetter.world. It is the only item in the online store, but the Sutherlands plan to launch merchandise and more in the future.

Emily has read her story to various elementary schools as well as hosted a book signing at The Well Coffeehouse in Fishers.

It’s amazing how much a relationship can grow and bridges can be built when you simply sit down with someone and get to know them,” Scott said. “A big part of what comes out of that is building trust. In all relationships, building trust is critical. If we really want to grow as a society, trust has to be built in all relationships as much as possible. We are realistic enough to know we are not going to reach utopia, but whatever we can do to help start conversations between people on how to love better, that’s what we are all about and everything we do.”

Scott is the children’s pastor at Grace Church in Noblesville and Emily is a freelance writer. Their two most popular podcasts include topics on racial reconciliation and conflict. Each podcast is 30 to 35 minutes long. A new podcast is posted two Tuesdays a month.

“We can all learn from each other, regardless of where we live, what faith you have, what culture you come from,” Scott said.

“We can all learn how to love each other better.”

Emily is working on an eBook about relationships, with publication set for Dec. 5. She might travel to Rwanda in March to hear stories of genocide recovery.

“It (Love Better) is something we knew the world needed – to open up conversation about how we can create understanding and create empathy because the world is hurting right now,” Emily said.

Commentary by Terry Anker A recent weekend found me in the company of a number of not-yet betrothed young men. One had jumped the broom, but most were simply considering making the move. Indeed, my long marriage (longer in most cases than the entirety of their lives) sparked curiosity. Why do some marriages last when others do not? That answer, if a complete one exists, certainly eludes me.

Marry well, if you can, but always expect to find, and seek, compromise. Make little note of your partner’s peccadillos and hope they will do the same. Find room in your lives for each other. There is joy in knowing that the other person is there, always attentive to you and your needs.

Try to constrain your annoying habits.

Remind your spouse that a vice indulged at home is always better than one unseen.

Clean up after yourself – every time and without exception.

But most of all, tolerate imperfection.

Cigars smell. Men stink. And, I’ve never really liked the aroma of strong perfume. It makes me sneeze. So, what? If my bride loves the fragrance, I love it, too. I carry my own very pronounced imperfections. Those in my life who love and accommodate me have come to understand that truth and value my happiness, as do I theirs. In this there is no horse trading, scorekeeping, snarky comment or resentment. And, why should there be?

The beginning of November marked the return of the Winter Farmers Market in Fishers. Hosted on Saturday mornings at the Roy G. Holland Memorial Park building, the market is the place to kick off a weekend of fresh and local finds, and one vendor wants to ensure that shoppers can enjoy a delicious treat that doesn’t clash with their dietary restrictions.

Love & Cobbler is located in Fishers and features fresh, homemade fruit and chocolate cobblers made from an old family recipe that’s been passed down through the years. But their delicious cobblers aren’t all they’re famous for.

I had to go to the Apple Store. Again.

Actually, the visit marked my third in 10 days because the original humor repair to my daughter’s phone lasted until we got home, and the second time I didn’t have four hours to wait for a Genius Bar opening. As I sat on a wooden cube resisting the siren call of Solitaire on my Samsung (yes, Chez Wilson is pro-Android, except for our one rebel child), I took a moment to observe my surroundings.

For starters, the millennials who work at Apple are enviably cool. They come in all shapes, sizes, races, ethnicities and represent a full spectrum of wardrobe preferences. From the detail-minded, shirt tuckedin, headphone-wearing floor manager to the laid-back, ripped jeans, hipster glassessporting tech gurus, I found myself wanting to be 20 years younger and childless.

Then you have customers, who make the sport of people watching truly entertaining.

I saw baby boomers struggling through a clinic on simply “How to work your iPad” and a heavily bearded man wearing a T-shirt that didn’t quite cover his substantial gut ordering his toddler grandson to “Git over here!” The woman next to me had triple ear piercings and a nose ring, and across the room sat a fellow dance mom (hi, SL!). Not surprsinginly, there were scores of angsty teens and young professionals trying out the latest gadgets, but I also spotted a Colts player and several people, besides myself, on Samsungs. It’s still too soon to share my opinion of the gentleman behind me with a noticeable GI issue.

I definitely prefer my Samsung but it’s always intriguing to visit the Apple Store.

‘I believe you’

Editor, Recent news about Harvey Weinstein’s decades-long sexual harassment and the resulting #MeToo social media campaign have reignited the discussion about the widespread nature of sexual violence.

As of this letter, more than 12 million people have used the #MeToo hashtag or engaged in the discussion on social media.

I continue to be amazed at the power of social media to provide a safe forum for people to share their stories and find comfort from both friends and relative strangers.

Admitting that sexual abuse and domestic violence exists is an important first step. No matter how high the hashtag numbers, there are still more victims who cannot speak out on social media, let alone leave their abusive situation.

Remember #WhyIStayed after the disturbing video footage of the Baltimore Raven’s running back’s assault on his nowwife in 2014? Many brave women and men came forward and shared the fear and uncertainty that prevented them from leaving an abusive situation.

This is a fear we see all too often at The Julian Center, and there are many reasons victims stay silent. They may fear retribution against their children or other loved ones. Many don’t come forward because their abuser has complete financial control.

Others fear losing their jobs or homes.

Some are unable to believe they are worthy

of anything other than a life of abuse. And, many are told they are to blame or are making the whole thing up.

Disputing the realities of domestic and sexual violence can have deadly consequences. A report released by the Centers for Disease Control in July of this year reported that more than 55 percent of all female homicides were related to partner violence.

One in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in the United States have experienced some form of sexual or domestic abuse. This is an unacceptable level of violence. It is past time we stand up to protect and serve those who are harassed, attacked, and abused.

There are many ways to get started, including volunteering at a local domestic violence shelter such as The Julian Center, learning how to spot the signs of intimidation and abuse, and speaking out when you see something wrong.

Most of all, we need to believe people when they say they have been abused.

There is no room for skepticism or unintentional shaming. Whether it’s shared on social media or in a private moment of trust, when someone tells you they’ve been the victim of domestic violence there is only one correct response: “I believe you.”

Lack of transit poses a problem Editor, I was glad to see the mayors of Fishers and Indianapolis join in the effort to attract the Amazon second headquarters.

We face huge competition from not only tech giants like Boston on the East Coast but also thriving tech places like Austin and Columbus in the South and Midwest.

However, if we don’t get it, the main reason may be the abysmal lack of mass transit in the suburbs.

One of Amazon’s criteria is public transit.

Although Indy has a public transportation system, many of the 50,000 workers Amazon would bring would have to find housing in the suburbs, where there is none! The

lack of public transit will already be a problem in Fishers with getting workers from Indy for the 18 new eating places planned and begun there. Many may not be able to afford private auto, Uber, or cab to and from work. The concept of rebuilding the railroad along with a bike trail connecting with Indy’s bus system would solve this problem, at least in regard to one suburb.

If we hope to gain big, good things, we need to think a little bigger. We don’t have to choose between trails and public mass transit. We can have both.

No laughing matter Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen passed along some comments she had heard about me at her book club.

“Kathy says your newspaper humor column makes her laugh, and Cara, our hostess, told me she thinks you’re quite amusing on TV.” “Wow, thanks for sharing that!”

“But Dick, I have to ask you this: How come you’re not so funny at home? People keep telling me how humorous you are and how much fun it must be to live with you, but I don’t see it. Maybe you leave it all in the basement where you write your column, or at the remote locations where you do your TV segments?”

“I’m that dull, huh?”

“Oh, don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great marriage for 38 years and I’ve been perfectly happy. It’s just not been the laugh riot everyone else assumes it is.”

It was a startling observation — and not an unfair one. When we are out with other couples we all laugh. Waiters love to trade jabs with me. The UPS guy and I always yuck it up on my porch. I never leave the dry cleaners without exchanging a few jokes with the clerk. But apparently, I save

nothing for my relationship with my wife. I only have so much to give, and maybe I give it all at the office.

“Mary Ellen, this is your fault. I can’t kid about your cooking: it’s outstanding. You dress impeccably, you have perfect hair and you are very intelligent. I need some material to work with.”

“I must admit, Dick, you are making a convincing argument.”

I was determined to make things right.

We sat across from each other at the dinner table that evening.

“Dick, you are trying way too hard. The red foam clown nose is not original. And you keep kicking me with those giant shoes.”

When a slight grin appeared on my wife’s face, I knew I was making progress.

“I could try some snappy repartee at dinner every night. I know I could be as funny at home as I am at work.”

“Oh, please,” Mary Ellen said, “don’t make me laugh.”

Nathan Olvera needs a kidney.

The 40-year-old Fishers resident has polycystic kidney organ donation disease, a hereditary disorder which also afflicts his mother. Nathan’s wife, Chris, has applied to be a living kidney donor, yet medication she was on disqualified her. She recently applied again.

“In a nutshell, we’re just trying to possibly find him a living kidney donor because he’s in stage 5 renal failure so he’s getting very close to having to start dialysis,” said Chris, who previously lived in Zionsville.

Nathan said although he is in end-stage renal failure, his life isn’t all that much different. He experiences more fatigue than normal and is on a strict diet, but he’s fighting to stay off dialysis. Symptoms began with high blood pressure.

“I might have to be on dialysis next year,” Nathan said . “Sometime next year, it all depends on how the bloodwork comes out and how I do.”

He’s hoping to receive a kidney before he starts dialysis, but the typical wait time is five years.

“He watched his mom. She had a kidney transplant at age 52,” Chris said. “He has kind of known what to expect because he has seen his mom go through all of this.

She is needing a second kidney now because the transplanted kidney is failing. He has seen what she’s going through. She’s been on dialysis and is on it again. If you can avoid dialysis, you usually have a better chance of having better health. Dialysis is hard on your body, hard on your heart

Nathan’s blood type is A-positive, and he can only receive a kidney from A or O blood types.

“After someone reading this thing, even

if they’re not looking to donate a kidney, maybe they can donate another organ to someone else who needs it,” Nathan said.

Digital blue light and your eyes Commentary by Dr. Matthew Clark What is “blue light”?

Blue light is just that, blue-colored light!

Blue light emits higher energy vision than red-colored light, thereby causing potential damage to the retina in the back of the eye.

Blue light is everywhere, mostly from the sun. It cannot be avoided completely, and is in fact beneficial in nature. It helps your body to regulate its sleep cycle, energy and hormone levels and even elevates your mood.

Why are we worried about light?

Excessive artificial blue light from our phones and computers can interrupt our cir-

cadian rhythms, disturb sleep patterns and even influence your mood. Blue decreases contrast, causing eyestrain while on your devices. Over time, this high-energy light actually damages the retina, likely inclining toward macular degeneration. People who have had cataract surgery are especially susceptible, since the lens removed during surgery filters out most blue light.

What should I do?

We don’t yet know the long-term effects this digital age will have on our eyes, but let’s take some simple measures to protect ourselves and our families. Ideally, we would all cut the time we spend on our devices by at least half, but I’m probably not going to do that, you’re not going to do

that, and your kids are certainly not going to do it. Most smartphones and tablets now have a blue light filter in their settings, or “Night Shift” for you iPhone users. Set it to turn on in the evening to relax your eyes and help your brain turn off. Then, at your next annual exam talk with your eye doctor about lenses and coatings to filter out harmful blue light. There are many options out now to protect you and make you more comfortable while on your devices.

Regenerative medicine limits Commentary by Dr. Joseph Hui A few years ago, while riding in an airplane, I came across an airline magazine adverstisement. It was for Injuries an orthopedic/dermatology clinic in Boca Raton, Fla., and splashed across the headline was, “Regenerative Medicine Stem Cell Specialists.” It claimed that while preparing your stem cells for the treatment of your joint pain, you could get its trademark vampire facelift while overlooking serene ocean views in the treatment room. At first I balked. Then, intrigued, I began to look into evidence behind such claims.

In the past few years, the data behind regenerative medicine to treat arthritis, cartilage degeneration and chronic tendon/ligament problems appears quite fruitful. Regenerative medicine is typically broken down into either using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Both are typically derived from your own body, so no embryos are involved. MSCs can differentiate — a process where a cell changes from one cell type to another — into bone, muscle,

cartilage, tendon and are typically found in fat and bone marrow. PRP is derived from taking 60 ml of a person’s blood and isolating the platelets. The plasma, with higher concentrated platelets than normal blood, is then injected using ultrasound guidance into problematic tendons or joints. Although MSCs hold more promise and will likely revolutionize the treatment of orthopedic problems in the future, at this time the treatment is still too costly, and long-term data is lacking.

PRP is simple and relatively cost-effective and is often used to treat joint and tendon problems. It also has strong data to support its use to treat mild to moderate hip and knee osteoarthritis. For those looking for an alternative to surgery, PRP can be helpful. Although I will not be performing vampire facelifts at my clinic, the use of regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal issues is likely here to stay.

City of Fishers launches second Movember campaign news@currentinfishers.com Men will be growing out their facial hair in an effort to raise awareness for men’s health throughout the men’s health month of November.

This will be the City of Fishers’ second year with the Movember campaign. A special focus will be placed on men’s mental health during the campaign.

“In our community, data shows that over the past three years males in Fishers comprise 46 percent of the total number of mental health incidents,” Mayor Scott Fadness stated in a press release sent to Current. “For that same period, 51 percent of all suicide attempts and completions were males 40 and over. Movember is a great opportunity for the Mental Health Initiative to rally behind the fathers, brothers, husbands and male friends who may be living in quiet despair.”

Riverview Health’s new MRI reduces exam times

A new state-of-the-art MRI machine is helping Riverview Health patients’ comfort level during the magnetic equipment resonance imaging scan.

The Toshiba Vantage Titan 1.5T MRI was delivered July 31. Technical installation was completed Sept. 18, with test patients and application training from Sept. 18 to 30. Patients began using the new MRI Oct. 1 at the Noblesville hospital.

Megan Wiles, executive director of Riverview Health Foundation, said the foundation raised more than $700,000 to purchase the MRI. “T-slip technology is a new and promising method for non-contrast MR angiography developed by Toshiba,” said Stevie Aley, MRI supervisor at Riverview Health. “T-slip is a time spatial labeling inversion pulse that provides visualization of bright blood vessels without having to inject a special dye for vascular diagnosis. This is a very helpful tool in obtaining large vessel anatomy imaging on patients with low renal functions that cannot have contrast.”

Quiet technology called Pianissimo has vacuumed the gradients of the MRI to reduce acoustic noise. With the addition of the new MRI, Riverview Health now has two machines, which allows more access for patients requiring testing. When Riverview Health Westfield Hospital opens in 2018, the imaging center there will have the same MRI machine.

‘Broadway and Beyond’ set for CAT Theatre

Wolf, who co-founded the theater company theater Nickel Plate Players with his wife Sandy Thorne in 2014, is presenting “Broadway and Beyond” at The Cat Theatre in Carmel, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18. The performances feature Wolf and Jessica Hawkins, both Fishers residents. Wolf said he agreed to partner with Will Wood of The Cat Theatre for certain productions.

“There are several productions that have large casts of performers, which is too big for Hawkins that space,” Wolf said. “So, we started with ‘Dueling Pianos,’ and then I decided I wanted to create a smaller cabaret-type show and one in which I could come out from behind my piano. The (Indianapolis-area) theater community sees me in one light. They don’t know I performed on stage as an actor. I do a little dancing, so I thought it would be a good time to show the community what I do.”

Wolf then thought who would be the best person to share the stage with for this show. Hawkins was in one of Nickel Plate’s original productions, “Beehive,” in 2014.

“I immediately noticed not only her ability and talent, but her professionalism,” Wolf said.

In addition, Wolf was a fan of Hawkins’ appearance as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre’s “La Casa Azul” in 2015. Wolf received permission from Hancock for Hawkins to perform some songs for this show.

“He even offered up some of the tracks for us to use,” said Wolf, adding the tracks feature a full orchestra. “He’s been so supportive and so gracious.”

In addition, Wolf said there will be classics, duets and solos from Broadway and classics from famous Piano Men. Hawkins is excited about the variety of the performances.

“This is really fun because I get to sing songs that are not part of a specific character,” Hawkins said. “There are a lot of songs I’ll never get to sing in a show. Some are more romantic.

Some are ridiculous and funny. Gregory’s songs are a little more dramatic, definitely deeper.”

Wolf will perform songs from his play, “Ten Pin Alli,” which he co-wrote and directed.

“It’s really nice to be able to do songs from different shows,” Wolf said. “You can’t pop into Sondheim (music) in the middle of a Rodgers and Hammerstein show. We get to mix it up and present a lot of different writers and materials.”

Wolf serves as artistic director of Nickel Plate Players, which operates under the parent company of The Indiana Theatre Company. Among the shows he created was “Indiana The Musical” as part of the bicentennial celebration in 2016.

ATI presents ‘A Year with Frog and Toad’

Don Farrell, who will theater reprise his role as Toad in the musical presented by Actors Theatre of Indiana at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 25 and Nov. 26, said it appeals to adults “even if they don’t have children.”

“The characters of Frog and Toad define our contemporary storytelling selves, not just for children but for parents and any adult who later in life re-learn the critical importance of children’s tales,” said Farrell, ATI co-founder and artistic director. “The show does not talk down to the children, and the entertaining messages are not lost on the adults, especially today.

In fact, every year about this time we write such a column to remind seasoned tailgaters and to show rookies how to end the tailgate season so that they are better prepared for next year. Here are some important points to remember: • Travel the length of your row in the parking lot, at the last game, and look for ideas and ask about things others use that you don’t have.

• After your last tailgate, clean each piece of equipment and check it for serviceability.

• Make a list of items you need to replace.

• Talk with this year’s guests at your tailgate parties and ask what they felt went well and what went wrong.

• Make a Christmas list and search the web for bargains.

If you take a December Saturday to clean up your equipment, there’s a recipe that will warm your heart and your stomach.

Commentary by Randy Sorrell Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official: Homeowners are staying put longer and moving less. At least, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the abbreviated summary of the WSJ study released last home improvment week. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been experiencing this for a few years now, and the trend is considerably exacerbated by the tight home inventory market.

Frustrations are fueled by land use regulations, making it more difficult to build new homes and mega investors gobbling up hundreds or thousands of homes for rentals, thus precluding them from the market for new home buyers.

Conversations among industry professionals verify these thoughts. My real estate friends are selling plenty of homes, but a squeezed inventory is limiting success. My remodeling and patio/landscape friendly competitors are quite busy, too. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a frothy business climate!

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another interesting trend, something that we are personally experiencing with a growing list of friends. Although we would like to downsize, the cost of the new and smaller homes on the market cost more than what we can sell our existing home for. So, moving would prompt additional debt or liquidating stocks to pay cash. Or â&#x20AC;Ś

Prague Castle and diversity Commentary by Don Knebel The “Guinness Book of World Records identifies” Prague Castle as the world’s largest castle. If a collection of buildings can be considered a castle, travel Prague Castle also deserves the record for the greatest architectural diversity within a castle.

In the ninth century A.D., Duke Borivoj I, the first Christian ruler of Bohemia, fortified an 18-acre site atop a hill overlooking the Vltava River. A wall and a moat protected the palace and a few wooden residences, and Borivoj soon erected a stone church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 920, Duke Vratislaus I built the Romanesque Basilica of St. George, which became a convent.

Over time, Bohemian rulers added buildings and improved the fortifications. In the 14th century, the site became the seat of Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor, who made the Prague Castle his residence and began construction of St. Vitus Cathedral, modeled on the great Gothic cathedrals of Western Europe. When the Habsburgs took up the Czech throne in 1536, they moved

the seat of power to Vienna and used Prague Castle as their summer residence.

After a major fire in 1541, they rebuilt sections of the castle in the Renaissance style and returned the imperial office to Prague.

In the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresa added neoclassical buildings to the mix.

Today, Prague Castle is the official residence of the president of the Czech Republic. The Republic’s crown jewels, among the most valuable in Europe, are maintained in St. Vitus Cathedral, one of four churches currently extant within the Castle. Most of the castle is open to the public, which enters through a Baroque gate flanked by 18th century statues of fighting giants. The gate is over what was originally a moat, with the castle now protected by guards wearing uniforms created by the Czech-born costume designer for “Amadeus.”

The same goes for basic grammar and spelling. Today I’m tackling five Facebook foibles and Twitter trip-ups that very well may prevent you from getting hired for the job you want.

If you’re looking for a great job, you need to know your grammar. Did you catch what I did there? Too often I see people use “your” when they should use “you’re.” Your is something you own or possess; you’re is the contraction (or mash up, as I like to call it) of “you” and “are.”

When you write “I hope the Colts don’t lose again,” you likely hope they score more points than the Patriots. When you
