Carmel forum features GOP governor candidates By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The five Republicans seeking to become Indiana’s next governor shared their views on education, the economy POLITICS and several other topics during a Jan. 25 forum presented by First Principles Forum at the Tarkington Theatre in Carmel. U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, former Indiana Secretary of Commerce Brad Chambers, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Fort Wayne businessman Eric Doden and former Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill took turns answering questions from moderators Joy Pullman, executive editor of The Federalist, and Fanchon Stinger, a former Fox 59 news anchor. The Republicans agreed on several things: a desire to eliminate the state’s equity, inclusion and opportunity office; a willingness to send National Guard troops to help secure the Texas border; and that the late Antonin Scalia is among their favorite Supreme Court justices of all time. But throughout the 90-minute event, they aimed to set themselves apart in other ways. The primary election is May 7. The winner will run against Democrat Jennifer McCormick and Libertarian Donald Rainwater in the Nov. 5 general election. BRAUN: NOT AFRAID TO ‘POKE THE BEAR’ Braun, a Jasper native nearing the end of his first term in the U.S. Senate, touted his experience as an entrepreneur and business owner. “If you want to run the biggest business in our state, maybe you should have spent some time signing the front side of a paycheck,” he said. Braun said he will continue to hold on to his core values and isn’t afraid to “poke the bear” when necessary to affect change. Braun said he supports a bill in the state legislature that would limit the governor’s power to declare an emergency and pointed to his work in Congress to rein in federal government power during the pandemic. He said restrictions in Indiana during the pandemic were more in line with policies in nearby blue states than others led by Republicans. “It was shameful what (Indiana) did,” he said. “When you start doing things like, ‘You’re an essential business, and you’re not,’ that is government gone wild.” CHAMBERS: ‘A GROWING ECONOMY’ BENEFITS ALL Chambers, Indiana’s former secretary of

commerce, said he believes the most important role of the governor is to grow the economy and thereby benefit all Hoosiers. “A growing economy affords us the ability to do a few things: to fix education, to back our police and make sure our public safety is protecting us from increasing crime, to deal with mental health and health care,” he said. “A growing economy affords us the ability to fix things and shrink government and improve overall quality of life.” He said a healthy economy begins with ensuring children receive an education that prepares them well for the workforce. He said Indiana has a “backwards-looking education system.” “It needs to be forward-looking to embrace the economy of the future, (by) making education more individualized and really modernizing it as much as we can,” he said. “Performance-based outcomes work for business, and they should be able to be applied to education as well.” CROUCH: FAUCI AND FEDS ‘LIED TO US’ Crouch served as the state’s lieutenant governor throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but she said many of the state’s efforts to stop the spread of the virus — from mandates to lockdowns — were based on faulty information from national leaders. “(Former White House medical advisor Anthony) Fauci and the federal government lied to us, and as a result many actions that were taken at the federal and state level impacted our freedoms and caused harm to Hoosier families,” she said. “When I am governor, I will allow Hoosiers to make decisions regarding their health.” She said she supports the bill in the state legislature that would limit the governor’s emergency powers to 30 days. A former state auditor, Crouch has pro-
Doden, an entrepreneur from Fort Wayne, said he wants to take a closer look than his opponents at how state agencies are spending taxpayer dollars. “How those agency heads spend that money really matters to how we serve Hoosiers,” he said. “I’m the only candidate on this dais that said every agency head has to reapply for their job. We’re going to bring in super-talented people that come in and serve.” For Doden, a top priority if elected governor is to issue an executive order to ban closures of coal plants unless there is a plan to compensate for its loss with another form of reliable energy. He said a federal effort to take coal plants offline is set to lead to higher energy prices in Indiana. “We’re going to keep the federal government from overreaching and causing us the problems that are in our power supply right now,” he said. HILL: TEAR DOWN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM Hill, who served as attorney general from 2017 to 2021, said he supports the idea of school choice, but “federal entanglements” are harming the state’s school system. “We need to do something about our school system. We need to tear it down and get back to basics,” he said. “It’s not enough to simply have choices. In my administration, we’re going to look for curriculum change. We’re going to bust down what’s going on — this has been years in the making — so we can develop a new solid system so that our kids can be as bright and as strong as they need to be moving forward.” Hill voiced his opinion on several social issues and referenced an advisory opinion he issued in 2020 regarding the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. “I believe in the truth. And that’s why I was a little perplexed as attorney general when the BMV put an X on the driver’s license to create a third classification of gender,” he said. “I fought that, beat it back and they took it back. Why? Because the truth is, there are only two genders, male and female, and that’s worth fighting for.”

In the meantime, we have no plans for any travel to China, and the CCP will have no influence over my administration or the city of Carmel.” Brainard, who left office at the end of 2023 but continues to serve as vice chair of the USHCA, said Banks’ comments are “symptomatic of the dumbing down of America.” “Representative Banks’ response is simply immature and impractical,” Brainard said. “China and the United States make up the two largest economies in the world. We have to have a dialogue. It doesn’t mean we back down on anything that’s important, but it’s critical that we continue to talk at all levels.”

The Hamilton County Election Board unanimously approved a resolution during its Jan. 19 meeting to GOVERNMENT adopt a new pay policy for election workers. The pay policy will go before the Hamilton County Council Feb. 7 for a final decision. Previously, members of the absentee boards were paid $100 per day and parttime positions were paid $15 per hour. “If there’s a line at 4:30, and they have to stay open, so they stay open for an hour or two extra, there’s no difference between a three-hour day and a 10-hour day, you got your $100,” said Kathy Kreag Williams, county clerk and secretary of the board. “So, ANBI-12893-02

U.S. Rep. Jim Banks is calling on Carmel and other Hoosier cities to withdraw from sister city POLITICS agreements with municipalities in China. He sent a letter Jan. 30 to Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam, urging the dissolution of the partnership Banks with Xiangyang, China, and asking Carmel officials to abstain from trips organized by groups with ties to the Chinese Communist Party. “You have a golden opportunity to play a crucial part in these efforts and undo others’ mistakes by disentangling Carmel from the Chinese Communist Party,” Banks stated in the letter to Finkam. The sister city agreement between Carmel and Xiangyang became official in 2012 during the administration of Mayor Jim Brainard, who joined several other U.S. mayors as part of a delegation to visit China in November 2023 through a trip organized by the U.S. Heartland China Association. During that trip, Brainard and Hubei Mayor Taihui Wang ratified the 2012 agreement. OBITUARY Dr. Dale A. Rouch MD, 69, of Carmel, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024. Dale was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Survived by his wife: Dr. Debra (Conerty) Bergman Rouch. Children: Rachel Bergman (Mel Yanson), Dr. Joshua Rouch (Maeghan), Stephanie Rouch, Andrea Laxton (Ben), and Evan Bergman. Grandchildren Ian and Kai Yanson, Eleanor and Atlas Rouch and Everett Laxton. Siblings: Julian Rouch, Glenda Bogucki (Joe), Mary Sue DeLauter, Viola Woods, Larita Killian, Rosemarie Braz (Norm), Libby Christianson, and Dean Rouch. Adopted mother Judy Conerty. Dale was born on a farm outside of Lakeville, IN, the 8th of 9 children. Preceding him in death are his parents, Clarence and Mary Jane Rouch, and adopted father Hugh Conerty. He graduated Valedictorian from LaVille High School in 1972, where he was inducted into the National Honor Society. He was awarded athlete of the year in high school, participating in basketball, baseball and cross country. He remained avidly involved in athletic pursuits throughout his life. Dale graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with Phi Beta Kappa honors and a degree in Biology in 1976. He attended Indiana University School of Medicine, graduating in 1980, and completed his General Surgery Residency at Methodist Hospital of Indiana in 1986. While in medical school, he was the recipient of the JK Berman Memorial Essay Award. He completed his hepatobiliary liver and kidney transplant fellowship at the University of Chicago in 1988. Dale started the Liver Transplant Program at Methodist Hospital of Indiana, performing the first liver transplant at Methodist Hospital and the 2nd in the State of Indiana. He performed over 200 liver transplants, as well as numerous liver and pancreatic surgeries for the treatment of cancer. The liver transplant was his favorite operation. He served as Director of the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization. He was Director of Surgery Residency Education at Methodist/Indiana University Hospitals. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He received numerous teaching awards from
the surgery residents as well as the family medicine department. He actively engaged in the training of medical students and surgical residents throughout his career. He was a recipient of the State of Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash award on May 14th 1998 for his contribution to the field of liver transplantation, awarded by Governor Frank O’Bannon and presented to Dale by Dr. Otis Bowen, then Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Ronald Reagan. Dr. Bowen was also Dale’s family physician, having delivered him at birth. Dale was an avid Indiana University supporter and member of the IU Varsity Club since 1980 having, and treating his family to, basketball and football season tickets since then. He and his family have been members of Crooked Stick Golf Club for over 30 years. He played golf with a passion, recently completing a trip to Scotland to golf with some of his closest friends. Dale was passionate about skiing, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking in Beaver Creek, Colorado with the love of his life, Debbie, his children and friends. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, and making sure that his children and grandchildren were able to experience that with them. Dale lived his life with exuberance and passion, never missing a chance to celebrate life’s big and small moments of joy with his wife, family and friends. We now live by his gracious example, continuing his dreams. We appreciate the care he received from Dr. Andrew Greenspan (Indiana University), Dr. Jennifer Woyach (Ohio State University), and Dr. Evandro Bezerra (Ohio State University), as well as the staff at the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University. Funeral Services were held February 1, 2024, at Flanner Buchanan – Hamilton Memorial Park (Prairie Waters). Memorial contributions can be made to the following organizations: Samaritans Purse, Wheeler Mission, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Catholic Charities. Charity Showdown to return By Tirzah Rowland tirzah@youarecurrent.com Peterman Brothers Heating-Cooling-Plumbing-Electrical invites the community to participate in its fifth Charity Showdown set to start PHILANTHROPY March 1. Benefiting Indiana charities throughout the state, the annual event is a March Madness-style competition decided by votes on Peterman’s social media sites. “The event continues to raise awareness for a number of worthy causes, while allowing our team and our customers to highlight causes they are passionate about,” said Chad Peterman, the company’s co-owner and president. Throughout January and February, Peterman Protection Club members nominate their favorite community charities. Nominees must have locations within Peterman’s territories serviced by seven Indiana locations. The Peterman team narrows the options to 64 and opens weekly voting rounds to the public. Two Carmel men are among three people indicted by a federal grand jury for their alleged roles in conspiring to COURTS defraud the Indiana Department of Education of more than $44 million by inflating enrollment totals of students attending two online charter schools. Those charged are: • Tom Stoughton Sr., 74, of Carmel, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, 16 counts of wire fraud and 57 counts of money laundering • Percy Clark, 81, of Carmel, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, 16 counts of wire fraud and 11 counts of money laundering • Phillip Holden, 62, of Middletown, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and 16 counts of wire fraud • Christopher King, 61, of Green Fork entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to the indictment, between at least the summer of 2016 and 2018, the de-
fendants allegedly submitted false numbers to IDOE representing the enrollment of more than 4,500 students that they knew were not attending Indiana Virtual School or Indiana Virtual Pathways Academy. IVS and IVPA received funding from the state based upon the number of students a school claimed to be enrolled and attending. The indictment alleges the defendants manipulated this reporting process to inflate enrollment numbers and ultimately receive more funding. The defendants allegedly caused students to be enrolled or remain enrolled in IVS/IVPA who should not have been by directing employees to stop verifying student interest before they were enrolled or reenrolled and by making incomplete student applications available so that the student information could be used to enroll students for the 2017 and September 2018 count days. Most of the students counted never actually attended either school. After IVPA was created in 2017, the defendants allegedly transferred hundreds of students who had not been attending any classes from IVS to IVPA to continue
to count and receive money for these students but also protect IVS from being held accountable by the IDOE for the students’ non-performance. In the spring of 2017, Holden and Clark allegedly fired an employee who sent an email to IDOE attempting to inform the department of fraud that was occurring at IVS. IVS and IVPA allegedly paid money received from the state to fraudulent for-profit companies, many of which were controlled or operated by Stoughton. After the money was funneled through those for-profit companies, millions of dollars were allegedly paid out to Stoughton and members of his family, Clark, King and others. The Indiana State Board of Accounts performed an audit on IVS and IVPA in 2019. The SBOA referred the audit findings to the FBI, U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General, Indiana State Police and Indiana Office of Inspector General. A trial for the three defendants who have not pleaded guilty will be scheduled later. If convicted, each defendant faces between 10 and 20 years in federal prison per count.

Lawrence Central junior wants to follow mom’s career path By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Lawrence Central High School junior Jaylah Lampley couldn’t ask for a better coach or mother. Lawrence Central’s head coach is, after all, her mother, Jannon Lampley. “She played at Purdue and in the WNBA,” Jaylah said. “Everything I want to do in life, she has already had that experience. I’m very blessed she gets to teach me and give me advice along the way, so I become like her. Most of my life I’ve been modeling after her. I’ve followed in her footsteps. It’s amazing I get to succeed not only with my mother, but with my sister (Lola) as well.” Jannon Lampley, whose maiden name is Roland, played for Purdue University from 1993-97, earning Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 1997. This is her second season as head coach after serving as associate head coach when Jaylah was a freshman. Prior to the sectional opener Jan. 31, Jaylah, a 6-foot guard, was averaging 18.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Class 4A No. 1 Bears (23-1). Versed Skateboard Shop aims to create community, highlight skills
By Tirzah Rowland tirzah@youarecurrent.com Versed Skateboard Shop owner Aaron Vaughn has brought his two-decade love for skateboarding to Carmel. “I grew up in Lawrence and started skating when I was 11. A bunch of my friends and I grew up skating together,” said Vaughn, 31. “I never wanted to do anything else.” Vaughn, a 2011 graduate of Lawrence Central High School, spent time in Los Angeles and Chicago “chasing the dream as a competitor” and working on video projects. “The highlight of my career has actually been coming back to my roots and starting a shop,” Vaughn said. “Putting new peers on and sponsoring them, putting out videos and taking care of the community has been my biggest highlight of my skateboard journey.” In 2017, Vaughn became manager for one of his sponsor stores, RISE Skateboard Shop, in Carmel. “My turning point was just realizing the most realistic option for me to build a comfortable life and future for myself was to not be on the competitive side of skateboarding and chose to work in the industry on some scale,” he said. Vaughn bought the store that became Minus Skateboard shop in Monon Square in 2019 to continue building community in Carmel. “I wanted a community-based shop, something different, a place for people to be authentic and genuine while growing in the sport,” Vaughn said. “I grew up going to a shop where they held demos and held signings for professional teams.” Vaughn’s goal is to bring those events and sense of community to Carmel. He also wants to highlight the artistic side of skateboarding with board art exhibits. Renamed Versed, the shop relocated last year to 10567 North College Ave., because of the closure and demolition of Monon Square for redevelopment. “The move impacted business and the name switch did as well,” Vaughn said. “Interior and appearance-wise, this new location is better.” The addition of skateboarding to the Olympics starting with the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo and the upcoming Summer Games in Paris “took it to the next level,” Vaughn said, and led to more people visiting the shop. Versed aims to foster a strong sense of community for its customers. “During a time when buying from large online skate stores is becoming more commonplace, Versed provides the traditional neighborhood skate shop experience where the foundations of a strong local skate culture are cultivated,” said Ben Virata, local skateboarder and project editor for Versed YouTube videos. Vaughn’s passion for youth to engage in a sport and have something to work toward is reflected in the space. Versed
Store hours are noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. It is closed on Mondays until Feb. 19. Vaughn is the only employee. Versed also has an online shop and domestic shipping. “As inventory comes in, we have hot drops. Things sell out quickly,” Vaughn said. Versed carries most major skateboard and apparel brands including Vans, New Balance, Last Resort, Emerica and Nike and a line of branded Versed apparel and skateboards. sells components for customized skateboards, as well as clothing and shoes. The shop carries a variety of styles and brands to fit many interests, skill sets and ages. Vaughn has seen parents with kids as young as 3 come in wanting to get started in the sport. “Recently, a dad came in wanting to get his kid into it. We offer pre-built introductory completes. It makes it easier on the parent,” Vaughn said. “We have people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s come in wanting the brands they remember. We offer those heritage brands reissued.” Versed also offers fully customizable options. “Our board wall lets the customer choose a completely a-la-carte experience,” Vaughn said.
The skateboarding community often promotes its members and skills through videos. Versed recently completed two video projects: 65 Connection and Activated. “Working with (Versed owner Aaron Vaughn) on 65 Connection felt natural. Not only is he driven to push his abilities, he is also a true lover of skateboarding, which made it quite easy for me and my like-minded friends to form real friendships with him,” said Ben Virata, 65 Connection project editor. “As the editor, I really appreciated his input and attention to detail when it came to creating our vision for this project. AFRID workbook ‘bridges gap’ By Amy Adams news@currentincarmel.com Registered dietitian Amanda Garant of Carmel and psychologist Valerie Weesner of Noblesville first worked RESOURCE together at the Charis Center for Eating Disorders in Indianapolis in 2013, when Weesner served as its clinical director. That same year, the diagnosis of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder emerged. Garant and Weesner hope that their new publication, “Bridge the Food Gap: An ARFID Recovery Workbook,” will do what its title implies. ARFID can be diagnosed at any age and can include a lack of interest in food, sensory avoidance of certain foods and fear about the consequences of eating, such as illness or choking. “It’s important to help the wider public understand that it’s not just picky eating, and it’s not a result of bad parenting,” Garant said. In 2021, Garant and Weesner were talking about how support materials for families and individuals facing ARFID were few. So, they decided to create a resource.

“Valerie and I literally sat down together to write every Friday for 2 1/2 years,” Garant said. The final product, released by Archway in November 2023, provides the building blocks to understanding an ARFID diagnosis and the mental, physical and emotional essentials of the recovery journey. BuffaLouie’s nears opening By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It’s taken a bit longer than expected to debut the BuffaLouie’s Carmel location, but the restaurant best COMING SOON known for its wings is preparing to open by April at the latest. “We want to make sure we’re consistent as far as the looks and tastes, that it is the same as it is in Bloomington,” said Nick Williams, BuffaLouie’s managing partner. “That’s our biggest key, so that’s why we’ve been diligently taking our time on things, making sure we do things right. We have a lot of things planned and surprises for everyone. It’s going to be great, and we’re definitely excited for it.” BuffaLouie’s, founded in Bloomington in 1987 by then-Indiana University junior Jay Lieser, will be on the southeast corner of Main Street and Veterans Way in a space that previously housed the Carmel Chocolate Cafe and Main Street Barber Shop. Originally expected to open in November 2023, the Carmel site marks the restaurant’s second location, but its owners are eyeing other expansion opportunities in the Indianapolis area. Williams, an Indianapolis resident, said the menu in Carmel will mirror offerings in Bloomington and, in addition to wings,

include salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. The Carmel restaurant, however, will sell liquor in addition to beer and wine and have wait staff serving tables. The Bloomington location only offers beer and wine, and customers order at a counter. The decor in the Carmel restaurant is set to celebrate Indiana sports, including the Colts, Pacers, and — of course — the Bloomington-based IU Hoosiers. Longtime IU rival Purdue University will likely be represented, too. “We were thinking of having a Boiler Booth where we’ll put some Purdue stuff in there,” Williams said. Talent InSight 2030 measures the county’s population, occupation, educational demographics and commuting patterns to establish long-term demand forecasts for multiple subsets of high demand employment. “Hamilton County is a destination for high-wage, highly educated talent from across the country,” Invest Hamilton County President and CEO Mike Thibideau stated. “We also possess dynamic communities led by visionary individuals that have seen job growth explode over the past multiple decades.” Talent InSight 2030 was compiled by bringing together the economic development goals of Hamilton County’s cities, growth projections of school corporations, projected home building plans for local builders and a diverse array of private and governmental data sources such as Light-
cast, ESRI, the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, IN Department of Education and STATS Indiana. In 2026, Hamilton County, the state’s fastest-growing county, is projected to import 2,000 more workers than it exports, representing a 15,000-person net shift in commuting patterns since 2015, even when excluding hybrid and remote working trends. “This project is intended to provide a tool that our local leaders, education stakeholders and business community can use to forecast how our community will continue to grow and change through the rest of this decade,” Thibideau stated. Invest Hamilton County will host a State of the Workforce luncheon March 19 at The Bridgewater Club. Thibideau and a national speaker from Lightcast, leaders in labor market analytics, will dive into the data gleaned from the Talent InSight 2030 project and compared it to national trends. 78-acre CNO campus for sale By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com A prime real estate spot in Carmel is up for sale. Colliers has been apREAL ESTATE pointed as the exclusive agent for the sale of the CNO Financial Group’s 78-acre corporate campus at 11825 N. Pennsylvania St. CNO, an insurance and financial services company, is in the process of moving its operations to the OpenLane Inc. building at 11299 N. Illinois St. in Carmel. It announced its move in June 2023 and expects it to be complete this spring. “Colliers is being engaged by CNO to lead the marketing process for the campus and, naturally, we feel that there is an opportunity for an experienced master developer to come in and potentially partner with other specialized developers, too,” said Andrew Urban, Colliers’ senior vice president of occupier services. Urban said the 78 acres could be described as a district. “It’s really one of the sites where it’s not going to be one single use,” he said. “It’s going to be a number of different uses crossing commercial, office space, laboratory space potentially, as well as retail and community aspects. I know parks are going to be part of this, as well as green space and residential options across different price spectrums. It really has exciting potential. There are not many 78-acre parcels in the City of Carmel.” Urban said Colliers has had conversations with the city’s previous administration and current administration, along with new and existing members of the Carmel City Council. “Our priorities with any potential redevelopment project are going to place a heavy

emphasis on ensuring that we are optimizing our ability to attract talent and position Carmel as a top-tier destination in the U.S.,” Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam said. “CNO has been a strong local partner for many years, and I appreciate their continued collaboration as we work to achieve the highest and best use of that land.” Urban said the City of Carmel has offered support and feedback. “Carmel is going to have a large influence on what happens here,” Urban said. The campus includes more than 611,000 square feet of building space and 2,700 parking spaces. “For everyone involved, one buyer provides some natural synergies and one natural cohesive vision over time,” Urban said. “At the same time, we realize it is a very large development opportunity. There could be multiple developers for the three key pieces of the parcel. They would naturally have to collaborate and work together. A master developer could come in and take the lead role in how the pieces can fit together and then partner with individual developers on different aspects of the site with their specialization and track record.” Urban said it is hard to put a number on the property’s worth at this point. “We’re kind of letting the market determine the value,” Urban said.

Fishers resident fulfills wish to play songwriter Weil in ‘Beautiful’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The first time Devan Mathias saw “Beautiful — The Carole King Musical,” it had an immediate impact on her. MUSICAL “When the character I’m playing now, (songwriter) Cynthia Weil, entered the stage for the first time, I knew pretty instantly that I had to play this part,” the Fishers resident said. “This woman walks into the office of music proMathias ducer Don Kirshner and asks for a job as a lyricist. She doesn’t really take no for an answer. She’s persistent and funny, and the second she started singing, I got goosebumps, like big ones. I only continued to fall in love with Cynthia as I watched her defy the social norms and expectations in the 1960s, all while navigating a working and romantic relationship with her songwriting partner, Barry Mann.” At intermission, she turned to her husband and said she had to play the part of Weil. “I don’t always get that feeling about a particular role, but I really try to listen to that intuition when it shows up,” Mathias said. “This one felt special.” Mathias portrays Weil Feb. 8 to March 30 in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of the play. “I love her strength and humor and internal fire,” Mathias said. “I love her tenacity and her immense heart, and as a writer and avid Shakespeare admirer, I love that she is also a wordsmith. So, this feels like such a dream.” Mathias said she realized that she and Weil, who died at age 82 in June 2023, are alike in more ways than she realized. “Growing up, I tried just about every sport and was good at, truthfully, none of them,” Mathias said. “Then I found musicals and discovered that I could forge a different path for myself. Once I got to college, where I majored in musical theater, it was

still all musicals, all the time. But since then, I fell in love with acting and plays. I’ve learned life is all about balance. I can run half marathons and redo my own kitchen and rewire light fixtures in my house and find joy in things that aren’t traditionally feminine and still fully embrace my identity and femininity and power as a woman. And similarly, I can love Shakespeare as much as (Stephen) Sondheim and make artistic homes for myself in both musicals and plays. “Maybe that’s why I love Cynthia so much, because she also doesn’t feel obligated to comply with society’s expectations of women. She finds balance in what’s right for her, and I admire that so much.” Mathias said the show is much more than a typical jukebox musical. “It feels more like a play with music, where the songwriters are writing songs based on what’s happening in their lives, sometimes in as little as an afternoon, but the music is still so universal,” Mathias said. “The show is funny and genuine and is jam-packed with dozens of songs that audiences probably already know. Carole
King and Gerry Goffin, as well as Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, were best friends, insanely competitive and had prolific careers writing for everyone from Aretha Franklin to Dolly Parton, James Taylor, The Drifters and The Shirelles.” Devon Perry, originally from Pickerington, Ohio, is making her Beef & Boards debut as Carole King. Westfield resident Don Farrell plays late music producer Don Kirshner. “I’m thrilled to play ‘The man with the golden ear,’” Farrell said. “His big thing was that it was a young person’s industry. It was the decade when the teenager was discovered as a demographic to market toward, and he got on to that more quickly than most. His discovery was letting young people write for young artists, and that’s where he discovered Carole King.” The Brill Building was famous for being a corporate songwriting factory. Market District a ‘foodie’s paradise’ Commentary by Mark LaFay Market District, at 1234 Illinois St. in Carmel, is a foodie’s paradise. The grocery store is massive and has quite a variety across every primary grocery category, and then some. Besides grocery items, Market District has quite the catering department, with a hot-and-ready selection and — unbeknownst to many — it has a delightful Italian restaurant that bears the name of celebrity chef Fabio Viviani. For some, the idea of grabbing dinner in the grocery store might seem like a foreign concept. For the most part, it has been largely foreign, and now it is simply “new” to the U.S. In my travels abroad, I have had memorable meals in grocery store restaurants, the most memorable being a full English “brekky” in a Woolworth’s in Cape Town, South Africa. Domestically, Hy-Vee, Whole Foods and Giant Eagle (Market District’s parent company) have launched in-store restaurant concepts nationwide, and the food is nothing to snub your nose at. Consider having a scratch kitchen with 24-7 access to premium fresh ingredients. A truly winning combination, and Osteria is no exception. Osteria’s is turning out fantastic pan-Italian cuisine, scratch-made with fresh ingredients. Its wood-fired pizzas are wildly popular for in-restaurant as well as carryout. Pastas are scratch-made daily, along with all sauces, and the features and
specials change on the regular. The culinary teams have very little creative restriction given their access to ingredients readily available on the grocery side. “One of my favorite pasta dishes they’ve made is an Italian onion soup pasta,” said the store’s general manager, Laurie Campbell. “Imagine a pasta dish that is a riff on French onion soup, but Italian — Caramelized cipolini onions, braised short rib, gruyere cheese and handmade pasta. Creativity and execution are clearly not in short supply.” Osteria also has a lunch grab-and-go counter in the grocery store called Osteria2. Especially for the Super Bowl, customers are encouraged to check out Osteria 2 for its special hot and ready smoked and flash-fried wings tossed in your choice of five different sauces available from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. While you are there, check out the deli department for 3-foot subs. And, of course, the liquor department has quite the selection of beer, wine and spirits for Super Bowl festivities at home. You don’t have to be a football fan to enjoy the Super Bowl. Call me crazy, but everything going on in the periphery may actually be more interesting than the game itself. Don’t misunderstand me, I enjoy watching the big game, and every so often, I am surprised by the path to victory. Admittedly, I haven’t had a dog in the fight since the Peyton Manning era of the Colts. I will still use the big game as a reason to have family and friends over to hang out, eat party food and play euchre (we pause the card games for the commercials). This year, I was hoping for an unlikely matchup, namely anyone vs. the Detroit Lions. Now, I’m pivoting my attention and enthusiasm to the food to be prepared for the second Sunday in February 2024! Now that we have our lineup and we know who is performing at halftime, the last remaining question is: What are we going to eat? The good (and potentially bad) news is that there are many options for ordering carryout or premium shopping for making premium snacks at home. I had a difficult time whittling this down, and although this isn’t going to be an exhaustive list, it will be an ‘A’ list of options. Kicking us off is the carryout list: Crafter’s Drafthouse — Family-owned, at 2430 E 146th St., in Carmel. Great pizza, great wings. The wings are meaty with several flavor options, including limited-time flavor combos. The pizza is also silly good and all very reasonably priced. • Ale Emporium — A true staple of Indianapolis pub culture and cuisine. The original location is at 8617 Allisonville Rd., in Indianapolis. It has been there since 1982. It has Fishers and Greenwood locations, as well. The wings are where it’s at, especially its famous ‘Hermanaki’ wings. Upland Brewery — Wings it is at Upland! Get an order of 16 wings and 12 beers for $40. Mariachi Herencia de MéxMARIACHI ico started from a student music program in the Chicago Public Schools “Our show features of a lot of Mexican mariachi repertoire and give them a fresh arrangement,” said Marco Villela, the band’s music director. “We are revitalizing the music and bringing new things to the table to the genre of mariachi. (Attendees) can expect to hear a wide range of styles within the whole mariachi genre.” Villela also plays the trumpet and sings. Mariachi Herencia de México will make its first visit to Carmel with an 8 p.m. concert Feb. 9 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. The 13-piece band consists of five violins, three trumpets, three guitars (including the Mexican vihuela), one bass and one harp, with the musicians doubling as singers. “We have written music in English. The medley consists of “Come Fly With Me,” “My Way” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” “Half of the music is composed by one of the greatest composers of the whole mariachi genre by Rigoberto Alfaro, who is pretty much responsible for creating half of the mariachi genre,” Villela said. “The other half of the show is composed by myself. A lot of arrangements are true to the essence of the original song. We try to capture the essence, capture the melody and we harmonize a little here and there.” The band’s most recent release was “Herederos” in 2022, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album. There are so many different foods you can have to party properly RECIPE during the Super Bowl, but our default is wings. Ingredients: • Chicken party wings (flats and drums separated) • Lawry’s Seasoned Salt • MSG (you read that right) • Cornstarch • Peanut oil or Crisco shortening Instructions: 1. Dry chicken wings by laying them on a thick layer of paper towels. Cover them with more paper towels and press. Let them sit for 10–15 minutes. 2. Aggressively season the chicken wings with Lawry’s and MSG. 3. Toss the wings in cornstarch. 4. Fry the wings in oil heated to 360°F. They will start to float when they are fully cooked. Keep them cooking until a good golden brown. 5. Remove from oil and place on a wire rack or a pan lined with paper towels to catch the grease.

Buffalo sauce: • 1 cup Frank’s Red Hot • 1/2 cup unsalted butter • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste) • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • Salt to taste Instructions: Mix all of the ingredients in a saucepan, cook down for about 15 minutes, then turn off the heat. Toss with wings in a bowl. Garlic Parmesan Sauce: • 1 cup Duke’s Mayo • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1/4 cup ranch powder • Salt to taste Instructions: Mix all of the ingredients, microwave on high for 90 seconds, whisk, and repeat twice. NOTICE TO BIDDERS City of Carmel, Indiana Department Board of Public Works and Safety One Civic Square City of Carmel, Indiana 46032 Project: 22-ENG-13 Rohrer Rd Multi-Use Path & Water Main Notice is hereby given that the Board of Public Works and Safety for the City of Carmel, Hamilton County, Indiana will receive sealed bids for the above described “Project” at the office of the Clerk Treasurer, One Civic Square, Carmel, Indiana (City Hall) until 9:45 EST and in the Council Chambers at the same address between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. EST on or before February 21, 2024 , and commencing as soon as practicable thereafter on the same date such bids will be publicly opened and read aloud in the Council Chambers of City Hall. No late bids will be accepted. All bids and proposals shall be properly and completely executed on the proposal forms provided with the plans and specifications, which will include the non-collusion affidavit as required by the State of Indiana. The bid envelope must be sealed and have the words “BID – 22-ENG-13 Rohrer Rd Multi-Use Path & Water Main.” A bid bond or certified check in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the amount bid must be submitted with each bid. A one hundred percent (100%) performance and payment bond will also be required of the successful bidder. It is intended that actual construction of all work divisions shall be started as soon as practicable, and each bidder shall be prepared to enter promptly into a construction contract, furnish a performance bond, and begin work without delay in the event the award is made to him. The Project consists of, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project is for the construction of a multi-use path along the west side of Rohrer Rd, from Grace th Dr. to 146 St in Carmel, IN. The project consists of installing storm sewer, water main, asphalt path, concrete sidewalk, curbs, and a modular block wall. Contract Documents for the Project have been assembled into one bound project manual, which together with drawings, may be examined at the following locations: City of Carmel Department of Engineering - 1st Floor One Civic Square Carmel, IN 46032 (317) 571-2441 Copies of such drawings and project manuals must be obtained from Reprographix (Reprographix.com). Payments and costs of Contract Documents are non-refundable. Bidders shall assure that they have obtained complete sets of drawings and Contract Documents and shall assume the risk of any errors or omissions in bids prepared in reliance on incomplete sets of drawings and Contract Documents. This Project will be funded by the City of Carmel. A pre-bid conference for discussions of the Project, the bidding requirements and other important matters will be held on February 7 at 11:00 A.M. in the Caucus Room on the 2nd Floor of City Hall (One Civic Square). All prospective bidders are invited to attend the pre-bid conference. The pre-bid conference is not mandatory.
