Beazer Homes has asked the Carmel City Council to wait until after the holidays before voting on its DEVELOPMENT proposed development, The Reserve at Cool Creek, which is northeast of the 136th Street and Keystone Parkway roundabout.

Several changes have already been made to the development. The most recent plans show it still designed primarily for those 55 years and older, but villa-style homes that included two dwellings per unit have been eliminated.

Some neighboring residents say they’d like to see more changes, and some city councilors agree.

Michelle Krcmery, a Smokey Ridge resident, said she’s concerned that lot sizes are too small. Each lot would be 50 to 55 feet wide with the house occupying 65 percent of the lot. Current zoning requires lot sizes of 100 feet with the house covering 30 percent of the lot. “This proposal from Beazer, in my opinion, is solely based on economics with little regard for development quality,� she said.

Beazer originally proposed nearly 160 homes, including 104 villas and 52 detached ranch-style homes for the 59-acre parcel.

Some residents in adjacent neighborhoods complained that this would be too dense and would not fit with the feel of the rest of the area.

Beazer is now proposing to build between 142 and 144 single-family detached homes.

All lots will have a minimum 50-foot width, and the home square footage will range from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet.

Sharon Gratigny lives next to the proposed site, and at first she was concerned about trees being cut down, added traffic and unattractive tract homes. She said getting rid of the villas is “definitely a step in the right direction� but that the new proposal still places homes too close to each other, some just 9 feet apart. “That is a lot of tiny homes close together

After encountering roadblocks while pursuing his childhood dreams, he refoRobbins cused his entrepreneurial background and found his way to HCLA. “I had to step away from a few things I was passionate about in the community, and I really missed it,� the 35-year-old Carmel resident said. “I was kind of at this crossroads of a childhood dream wondering where I was going to go and what it all means. I got coffee with Mo Merhoff (OneZone Chamber of Commerce president), and I was telling her how amazing the year’s been but I really hate being disconnected from the community and have to figure out a way to reconnect. She says, ‘Well, this is a different direction, but HCLA is looking for a new executive director,’ and that’s when the seed was planted.�

Previous HCLA Executive Director Jill Doyle served seven years before taking a position with Westfield Washington Schools.

Robbins accepted the position around Thanksgiving but doesn’t begin until Jan. 8.

He’s already forming his leadership vision. “It became clear quickly (during interview with board members) that we shared a lot of common language and beliefs,� Robbins said.

Robbins said his plan centers on strengthening HCLA’s existing relationships and making sure everyone in the county knows its mission, and to continue improving efforts to expand and grow the program to reach more leaders.

City councilor Kevin “Woody� Rider said the villas concept would have been a dealbreaker for him. He said he’s happy to see that change made, but there are still improvements he’d like to see. “Carmel is getting close to being built up, and so I don’t want to see us build something that isn’t up to our standards of quality,� he said. “I think more work can be done on this.�

What happened: The council discussed waivers to extend term limits for appointees to the Carmel Plan Commission and the Carmel Redevelopment Commission.

What it means: Using a simple majority vote, the council could extend a commissioner’s term beyond the limits. Currently, a city councilor who also serves on the plan commission or the CRC can serve two consecutive, oneyear terms. A third year would violate the term limits. This is timely because Councilor Bruce Kimball has served two years on the plan commission and City Councilor Jeff Worrell has served more than two years on the CRC, although most of that time was before he was elected to the council.

Both could have their terms extended if the provision is approved.

What’s next: The waivers will be discussed by the Finance, Utilities and Rules committee.

The Stratford women knit scarves for homeless

By Heather Collins news@currentincarmel.com Every Monday evening a group of women and knitting enthusiasts at The Stratford get together to work on GIVING BACK helping those in need of warmth and a handmade scarf.

The group meets at the Ladies Library at the Carmel retirement community to chat, cozy up to the fireplace and knit scarves for homeless men in downtown Indianapolis.

“We sit around in a circle and knit and tell funny stories,” said Luann Mitchell, a member of the knitting group and Stratford resident.

Stratford resident Bev Bartel said she saw a need after joining her fellow St. Mark’s United Methodist Church members to offer hot meals for more than 200 homeless men at Robert’s Park United Methodist Church in downtown Indianapolis last year.

Bartel said she noticed a lot of the men were inadequately dressed for the cold weather.

“I thought I could knit a scarf and give it to one of those people,” Bartel said.

Books connect young and old

By Heather Collins news@currentincarmel.com A new program at Carmel High School is helping bring together the minds of the young and old.

CLUB SilverHounds is a book club for high schoolers and senior citizens. The group meets at the CHS library throughout the year to talk about books, views and experiences.

Theresa Ramos, department chair of media and communications at CHS, said she saw the program implemented at Hobart High School several years ago and wanted to bring the idea to Carmel.

“I was immediately drawn to how spectacular it could be,” Ramos said.

This year, 10 Carmel students and 10 senior citizens are getting together to read “Beneath a Scarlett Sky,” by Mark T. Sullivan.

McVey said the program helps members get a multigenerational look at the questions and topics presented in the book.

McVey said it’s been an eye-opening experience to share her thoughts about books with much younger readers.

In the past, the knitters, ranging in ages from 80 to 95, have created afghans for babies at Riley Hospital for Children as well as caps and booties for newborns at St. Vincent’s hospital.

“We enjoy being together as well as producing scarves,” Bartel said. “It’s a nice social occasion.”

Authors promote loveliness

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.”

For two teachers and friends, Hepburn is their Woodward muse. They are living by her words and teaching others how to look at the world with love and compassion.

Alicia Woodward of Carmel and Natalie Schultz of Swansea, Ill., have published a nonfiction book, “Lesson in Loveliness – Learning to Live a Lovely Life,” and produce a daily blog.

“We are responding to a culture of sass, trash and crass with a touch of class,” Woodward said.

Their book and blog don’t try to prove or deny a changing culture, place blame or join the pity party, according to Woodward.

“We simply offer an alternative response to a growing sense of incivility, to con-

sciously look for the beauty in the world,” Woodward said.

The teachers, authors and bloggers are 20 years apart in age and live in different states, but when they met 15 years ago teaching at the same middle school in Fairview Heights, Ill., they clicked.

“Except for being 20 years apart in age, we immediately realized how simpatico we were,” said Woodward, who is the Schultz older of the two. “We are both brunettes with toothy smiles, the oldest of three sisters, and middle school English and social studies teachers. We taught together on the same eighth-grade team for eight years.”

Their mission is to inspire modern women to live with beauty and grace.

“We believe that women have an enormous influence over their personal lives, family, inner circles and community, although most of our writing speaks to men as well,” Woodward said.

Indiana’s Spousal Maintenance Statute: Can I Get Financial Support After My Divorce?

One of the most common questions we get asked during a divorce is regarding alimony. Does Indiana have it? What about spousal support? Will I have to pay either to my ex? The short answer: no.

Spousal maintenance may be awarded in a divorce or legal separation, but under limited circumstances. The physical or mental incapacitation of a spouse, the physical or mental incapacitation of the parties’ child, or what Indiana coins “rehabilitative� maintenance are all circumstances in which a court may award spousal maintenance. Of course, a spouse can always agree to voluntary pay another spouse maintenance or alimony, but let’s take a closer look at the statutory circumstances that a court may order maintenance.

If a spouse’s mental or physical incapacitation affects their ability to support himself or herself, a court may order the other spouse to pay maintenance. The courts can take in to account the disabled spouse’s ability to earn income as well as the other spouse’s ability to provide for maintenance. A key take away from this provision of the statute is that the court may find maintenance necessary, which means a judge may use his discretion when determining whether to award maintenance.

If the parties are the parents of a child who is physically or mentally incapacitated, the court may find an award of maintenance appropriate. This depends on a few things, one of the most important being whether the child’s incapacitation requires the spouse needing maintenance to forego employment. Another factor the court will consider is whether the parties have assets or marital property available to them that would allow them to provide for the spouse and the child’s needs. It’s important to note here that a court has complete discretion to determine what they deem appropriate in terms of the amount and length of maintenance that is necessary.

Courts can award what is known as rehabilitative maintenance, which is the most common of the three types of maintenance awarded in a divorce, if the spouse requesting rehabilitative maintenance lacks an ability to support himself or herself due to lack of education or training.

In these cases, courts look at several factors, some being the education level, training and employment experience of each party both at the time of marriage and at the time of divorce, the earning capacity of each party, the extent to which a spouse sacrificed education and/or employment because of homemaking or child-care responsibilities, and the time and expense necessary for the spouse to find appropriate employment. While a court’s decision to award rehabilitative maintenance is discretionary, the maximum length of time this type of maintenance can be awarded is 3 years.

What happens if you’re ordered to pay spousal maintenance and then you lose your job? The statute does allow for modification or revocation of an award of spousal maintenance, however the circumstances are, again, limited. Like the laws surrounding modification of a child custody or support order, a court can modify a spousal maintenance order under 2 different circumstances. If you can prove there’s been a substantial and continuing change in circumstances that make the current order unreasonable, you’ll have a good argument to modify. The second route to getting a modification is a two-prong test that’s less straightforward. If you can prove you’ve been ordered to pay an amount in child support that differs by more than 20% of what you should be paying under the Indiana Child Support Guidelines and that order was at least 12 months prior, you may be in luck.

As you can see, the parameters surrounding spousal maintenance are limited. MONON INTERSECTION ACCIDENTS

Horton struck a 32-year-old Carmel man who was running along the Monon Trail at the intersection. She said he â&#x20AC;&#x153;came out of nowhereâ&#x20AC;? and rolled onto the hood of her car before hitting the ground. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have been going the speed limit, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d probably be dead,â&#x20AC;? Horton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even at 30 miles per hour, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine the impact it would be on a person.â&#x20AC;?

The runner did not respond to requests for an interview.

His injuries turned out not to be life threatening, which has fortunately been the case for all five pedestrians or bicyclists to be struck at Monon Trail street crossings in 2017. The five incidents are a jump from previous years, with one reported in 2015, two in 2012 and none in 2013, 2014 and 2016, according to Carmel Police Dept. records.

The spike in accidents could be a fluke, as numbers provided by CPD show that Monon Trail usage decreased from 398,280 in 2014 to 303,884 in 2016. CPD moved the counter and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t begin using it again until early May 2017, but through Dec. 15 it tracked 286,965 people on the trail.

CPD Sgt. Donald Schoeff said the decreasing numbers are likely caused by miles of other trails opening in Carmel and nearby. But officials donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect the downward trend to continue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The anticipated residential and commercial growth in Midtown, City Center, the Proscenium and future developments surrounding the central core of the City of Carmel will no doubt boost the number of people using the Monon Greenway for both recreation and commuting to and from,â&#x20AC;? said Dan McFeely, a spokesman for the City of Carmel.

CPD Lt. Joe Bickel said it makes sense that more people on the trail would lead to more accidents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you have a greater amount of people on the Monon each year, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a higher risk that somebody might

get hit, especially somebody whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not familiar with the area or doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the rules of the Monon,â&#x20AC;? Bickel said.

Horton, a 69-year-old Carmel resident, said that she was following the rules when she struck the pedestrian, and the police report confirmed it. Monon Trail users have stop signs at the intersection but motorists do not, meaning pedestrians are required to stop and look for traffic before stepping into the street.

Indiana law states that pedestrians have the right-of-way once they are in the street, but they may not leave a curb, trail or other place of safety to enter a roadway if they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give an approaching vehicle enough time to stop. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even with a crosswalk, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just run into the path of a vehicle and think that you have the right-of-way as a pedestrian or bicyclist,â&#x20AC;? Bickel said.

Motorists are required to slow down and stop if a pedestrian is already in the intersection once they reach it.

Horton hopes that Monon Trail users and drivers who cross it will learn and follow the law. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a motorist, it is really traumatizing to actually have somebody on your hood looking through your windshield at you,â&#x20AC;? Horton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a horrible, horrible feeling, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d really like no one else to have to do this.â&#x20AC;?

Commentary by Terry Anker We humans like to count things – especially temporal things. At the end of the day, we reflect on the day and prepare for the day ahead. The clock strikes on the hour to signify the same – beginning and end. Tick, tock. As the hours advance, we count them all.

And with the waning days of December, our collective thoughts turn to the year rapidly closing. What did it bring? What did we find in it? Perhaps more importantly, what did we make of it? Reflection is a good thing. It can fortify and educate us.

But it also can trap us in a loop of angst about the fleeting nature of our lives. Moments fade and opportunities close.

Yet, with each end there also is a bright promise of a new year. Certainly, our prospects expire with each instant. We know that our days on earth are numbered, and with every twilight we are a bit further down our own path. Still, we so rarely notice the passage in the instant. Why do we busy ourselves with the mundane and then, as we are reminded of the calendar, find that our lives are moving faster than we can process? Would we benefit if we could see time as it travels and not only in the aggregate?

Or, would our contemplation of every instant prevent our enjoyment of them, much like the amateur photographer who is so caught up in photographing life as it occurs that he/she ends up missing much of the life that is happening? What is the balance between recognizing the passage of time and still not being held captive by it? How do we find peace in a long life while working to savor every moment?

It’s that time again, friends, to set ourselves up for failure and criticism and perhaps even an infinity scarf of HUMOR guilt should we fail in our lofty endeavors. I’m speaking, of course, of New Year’s resolutions.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the idea of taking a moment for reflection to see where changes and/or improvements can be made is wonderful. You can start over and set goals to encourage a better you.

The problem is, NYRs are impractical.

For starters, I’ve just survived a fourweek marathon of family, shopping, traffic, flu-like symptoms, meat and booze, and in the post-race tent, I’m in absolutely no condition to analyze my behavior. I need hydration and rest before seriously committing to a year with less swearing and less soda.

Secondly, most of us aren’t going to successfully meet our resolutions, anyway, which for me will lead to a self-mocking mantra of “I suck.” I’m a List Girl, and if I put a promise to paper, I feel compelled to check it off. Until I do, that “thing” will not only haunt me, but it will judge me in its haughty, two-dimensional space, creating frustration and anxiety in my already chaotic world.

For 2018, then, I’m postponing any New Year’s resolution-making until I can get my exhausted family back on track. Then, and only then, will I decide whether competing in the “hang on until spring break” race is more important than a fruitless pronouncement to curtail cussing or my aspartame intake (not that you’ll ever know because I won’t be writing anything down). If not, so be it. Life’s more interesting with the Fword and Diet Coke, anyway. Peace out.

DCS cuts leave children at risk Editor, As we get closer to Christmas, I hope that Gov. Holcomb will think of the children and families who are now at risk because of cuts to the Dept. of Child Services. It is sad that our governor is more interested in returning political favors than he is in protecting children who

are now in jeopardy. It is imperative that when the 2018 session gavels to order in January, Rep. Donna Schaibley and Sen. Mike Delph must call for an investigation into DCS immediately to ensure the safety of these children.

A bad Christmas rap Most men can’t wrap presents. And it annoys them when they watch women do it so effortlessly. Men who do know HUMOR how to wrap gifts certainly won’t admit it. If your bowling partner knows how to bake cookies, that would be the kind of thing you discover by accident. “Whoa! Sorry to barge in on you, Chuck. Marge said you were in the kitchen, so I figured you were downing a six-pack.”

Christmas morning, everybody knows which gifts dad wrapped. It’s a pretty universal notion that if the ends of the package are crumbled up like a big spit ball, it’s a present from dear ol’ Dad. This year, I wanted to learn how to giftwrap, so I went to YouTube for visual aids.

Results showing men doing the task? Exactly two. The first one was a video of a Japanese man demonstrating an ancient secret wrapping technique. I bet this guy can solve a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded.

Then there are clips of a scene from the movie “Love, Actually,” where Alan Rickman watches the fastidious sales clerk (Rowan Atkinson) as he takes F…O…R…E…V…E…R to gift-wrap the necklace Rickman has

purchased. Into the gift box go cinnamon sticks, flower petals and some glitter. All done with a flourish as Rickman squirms— as any man would.

If you search for: MEN KNITTING or MALES QUILTING, there are loads of examples. But men wrapping gifts? Just those two.

Have you ever seen males hoarding items that come pre-wrapped? “Is that a gift for your wife?” I asked a friend in line at Kohl’s.

“Yes. It’s either a compact umbrella, a coffee mug or an emergency flashlight. I dunno. But it’s already gift-wrapped.”

I’ve always bought my wife big gifts. Not big in the sense of expensive or memorable. I mean BIG. Because when you give a large gift, it’s OK to not wrap it. A new patio grill? Not what Mary Ellen wanted, but I can just throw a red ribbon and bow over it.

This year, Mary Ellen has agreed to wrap the holiday presents I bought for her. Uh oh, she’s calling for me, so I better go help.

She returned to her hometown of Carmel four years ago to focus on her longtime passion for fitness and health coaching.

While training clients at a Chicago gym and now remote health-coaching in Carmel, Eaton said many clients have expressed concerns about their health but are too overwhelmed with the demands and time commitment of dieting to finish a program.

Aldi planned for west Carmel

The Carmel Plan Commissionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commercial committee Dec. 5 approved plans for a new Aldi grocery store at 10584 Workout Way. GROCERY The 22,000-square-foot building is proposed on the southwest corner of 106th Street and Michigan Road just north of LA Fitness.

Aldi Greenwood Division Vice President Laura Bauer said it is too early to confirm any details about the proposed store.

Earlier this year, Aldi announced an aggressive $1.6 billion investment in stores nationwide, including $30 million for enhancing 22 stores throughout Indianapolis and surrounding areas by 2020.

The investment will focus on creating a more modern and convenient shopping experience with expanded produce, dairy and bakery sections. According to Aldi, the remodeled stores will have a modern design with open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials.

By the end of 2018, Aldi will have nearly 2,000 stores nationwide serving more than 45 million people each month.

No Label plans storefront

The food EXPANSION company, which employs people on the autism spectrum, expects to move into 111 W. Main St., Suite 145, although an opening date has not been set.

Founders Shelly Henley and Jeff Wittman started No Label at the Table to help make their autistic son’s dreams of becoming a chef a reality and offer work for other people with autism.

Henley said her son, Jacob, 21, wasn’t verbal enough to make it through a job interview and would likely have been relegated to a dishwashing position. Like all parents, Henley said she wanted her son to grow up happy and fulfilled.

“He has an incredible palate, and like most people on the spectrum, amazing detail and process skills,” Henley said. “A dishwashing position would be a waste of his potential and most likely a disaster.”

Henley said the shop would not have been possible without the Carmel City Center Community Development Corporation, which helped to secure the space, and Trace Construction and The Giving Hope Foundation, who are helping with buildout.

The company has 13 employees and wants to hire seven additional workers.

The shop will have an art gallery featuring artists on the autism spectrum.

When people come up with their resolutions for the new year, they often think of ways to improve their ECONOMY lives or make the world a better place. But I’ve got something we can all do more of that will accomplish both: support local small businesses.

I’ve never had anyone say they chose to live in a neighborhood because of its proximity to fast food chain restaurants.

People want small, unique stores and vendors that offer a personal touch.

My parents own a small restaurant in Carmel, and Current Publishing is a small business as well. In both cases, the owners are very hands-on and work alongside the staff.

For those of you concerned about debt or the economy, keep in mind that small businesses reinvest a greater percentage of their profits back into the community, whether it’s through donating to local schools or nonprofits or purchasing sup-

plies from fellow local small businesses.

More of their taxes go back into the city’s coffers instead of being sent out of state.

Indeed, the economic impact of small businesses can’t be overstated. They were key in the nation’s recovery from the recent recession. From the middle of 2009 to the middle of 2013, 60 percent of all jobs created came from small businesses.

Depending on how you measure it, they make up 60 to 80 percent of all U.S. jobs.

Many U.S. cities have launched small business initiatives as a way to jump-start their local economies.

Yet, they are vulnerable. Only two-thirds of all small businesses survive two years; half will survive five years; and only a third will survive a decade.

So, I ask you all to choose local businesses for your spending in 2018. And to developers building throughout our fair city, I encourage you to choose local businesses to lease your new spaces. It will make your property more interesting and will deepen your community roots in Carmel.

Students consider film project

Schmidt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I took this (filmmaking) class, and now there is an opportunity for us to make our own movie. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty cool.â&#x20AC;?

Professional filmmakers John Armstrong and Zachary Spicer presented their Project Pigasus, a statewide scriptwriting contest for high school students, at CHS for the second year. The deadline for the Project Pigasus short screenplays is Jan. 25. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 12 pages of script, and Armstrong said the films are eight to 10 minutes long. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been talking to classes, the Dept. of Education and social media,â&#x20AC;? Where’s Amy gives a 10-star salute to the Indiana Ballet Conservatory for its spectacular four-day, sold-out performances of “The Nutcracker” at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. From start to finish, these young dancers shined and dazzled the audience. One fun fact about the IBC’s “The Nutcracker” is it brought in Boston Ballet’s own Lasha Khozashvili for his seventh time dancing with the students.

It also was exciting to see students of all ages dance gracefully alongside faculty members Sergey Sergiev and Hailey Agran. The best way to lead off a New Year Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt It’s resolution time, which means your local gym’s treadmills will be in high demand while they glisten with other people’s sweat (until roughly the GRAMMAR GUY end of February). You’ve probably set some goals for yourself and defined ways you’d like to be more awesome in 2018. Allow me to suggest an additional resolution: To win at life with better grammar.

We can start right now. Since it’s time to lead off a new year, let’s examine the words lead and led, which often trip us up (just like that treadmill you set at a slightly-tooambitious speed).

Lead is an example of a heteronym. Heteronyms are homographs that are spelled the same, have different meanings and sound different. Lead is not only a heavy metal with a short e vowel sound, but it also is when someone is in charge, or ahead of something (as a verb) or a position of advantage in a competition (as a noun), and has a long e vowel sound.

Where lead gets tricky is when people incorrectly use the word led in its place. When you were in first place, you were in the lead; you led the race for 19 laps. Use led as the past tense for the verb lead (the one that rhymes with

bead).

The confusion, of course, is when lead (like the metal) and led (the past tense verb) go head-to-head. These words are homophones, which are homonyms (words that sound the same) with different spellings. Homophones trick us, kind of like the small print in the gym membership stating we can, under no circumstance, quit the gym.

This paragraph is a lightning round to clear up any other lead/led related words. Leed (with a long e vowel sound) is a Scottish word for language or speech. Led Zeppelin (with a short e vowel sound) was an English rock band, which, ironically, was one of the pioneering bands in the genre of heavy metal music (not pioneers in lead, the literal heavy metal). One of their favorite venues was Leeds University (pronounced with a long e vowel sound).

So, if you’d like to get the lead out on 2018, I suggest you lead the way by working out with Led Zeppelin blaring in your earbuds. And wipe down the treadmill before you use it.

Mount of Olives: Meeting place Commentary by Don Knebel A single place in Jerusalem provides a view of sites holy to three of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great religions.

TRAVEL At the time of Jesus, King Herod, who ruled on behalf of Rome, refurbished the Jewish Second Temple and significantly extended the Temple Mount on which it rested. The Temple Mount is just west of the Mount of Olives.

Many Jewish people believe their expected Messiah will walk down the Mount of Olives toward the Temple. In anticipation, Jews have long been buried on the Mount of Olives. Early followers of Jesus welcomed him as the Messiah as he rode a donkey down the Mount of Olives toward the Temple on the day Christians call Palm Sunday. Jesus then preached from the southern steps of the Temple Mount.

In 70 A.D., the Romans crushed the First Jewish Revolt, razed Jerusalem and demolished the Second Temple. After the Second Jewish Revolt in 135, Romans rebuilt the city, named it Aelia Capitolina and barred

Jews from entering except on one day a year. After Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire, Christians began settling in Aelia Capitolina, reportedly using the barren Temple Mount as their garbage dump. Muslims captured the city in 638, named it after Jerusalem and built the Al-Aqsa Mosque near the southern end of the Temple Mount.

Some Muslims believe the resurrected dead at the end of time will walk across a narrow bridge suspended between the Mount of Olives and Al-Aqsa Mosque, which has become the third-holiest site in Islam. In 1888, Russian Orthodox Christians opened the Church of Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley from the Temple Mount. The gold-domed church, AlAqsa Mosque and the southern steps of the Temple Mount can all be seen from a spot in what is now East Jerusalem.
