OUR TAKE It is our position that our fair city is in good transition categorize the exit interviews by three hands, as this past week Indiana Supreme Court postures: Chief Justice Randall Shepard administered the oath of office to re-elected 1. How can we help you serve Mayor Jim Brainard, to the returning the citizens? and newly elected members of the 2. We will help you only if you City Council and to City Court Judge make us. We hope and expect that our own and neither is blind contention. Word from merry band will keep their minds on our busithose managing the Indianapolis mayor’s ness and not their own petty agendas.

THE MORE THE (NOT-SO) MERRIER It is our position that regardless of the outcome of the most recent CarmelClay Schools redistricting effort, school officials should take a hard look at the quality and manner of the planning process that has led to yet again another shifting of local kids. Teachers, parents and children alike are on edge. We have already praised the good and true leadership of our schools, including Superintendent Barb Underwood, for attempting to include the community into solving the redistricting debacle. But that said, who was responsible for these consistently inaccurate projections? And will they be held accountable? Letters and e-mails from all corners are talking about this continuing problem and

how it will be addressed. Among the most compelling is the plight of kids who are now threatened with a school change for the fifth time since 2004: 1. The former College Wood Elementary. 2. The new College Wood Elementary. 3. West Clay Elementary. 4. Creekside Middle School. 5. (If redistricted again) Carmel Middle School. What are the stats on kids who move every year? Is it good for academic performance? Is it good for building long-term relationships between administrators, teachers and parents? We don’t believe it is. We believe these kids deserve better.

City secures $25 million in naming rights for Performing Arts Center. 3. Government spending reaches an all-time low. 4. Abusive lenders shut down for mortgage scams. 5. Fire crew ignored danger to themselves

tragedy struck Carmel last week when the minivan Batul Abbas and her three daughters were riding in slid into an icy retention pond and became completely submerged. When I first heard the news Saturday night, I prayed for the best, but learned the next morning that the outcome was far worse than I could have imagined. CFD Engine Company 46, responded from the fire station Jeff Worrell at Springmill Road CarmelCan! and 131st Street, arriving just minutes after the call came in. Leading the crew was Capt. Jim Selbring, followed by Lt. Brad Love, firefighter Barry Crane, medic Kyle Condra, and firefighter Bruce Frost. Jumping from the fire truck and rushing to the bank of the pond, each of the men felt the overwhelming pressure of circumstances almost too grim to comprehend. From the edge of the frigid water the glow of tail lights was eerily visible beneath the

surface. Love and Condra knew that Rescue Crew 45, under the command of Capt. Jace Platt, was still minutes away with the necessary rescue gear. Feeling they couldn’t wait another second and without regard for their own safety, proper protocol or common sense, they began peeling off the heavy fire gear that was their only protection from the subfreezing temperatures. Stripped to just department issue cotton T-shirts and shorts, Love and Condra quickly donned lifejackets and tied a rope around their waists to be anchored by Frost and Selbring on shore. Both men, armed with a windshield pick, swam the 50 agonizing feet to the van, used what strength they had left to swing the pick underwater and successfully broke out the back window. At the same time, Rescue Company 45, fully dressed in wetsuits, arrived to help rescue the family while medical personnel set

up at pondside to immediately begin CPR. However, Condra and Love did not stop working once out of the water, but provided CPR on the way to the hospital, refusing to give up. It makes me very sad to write this story, knowing the grief and pain that Mr. Abbas must be feeling over his loss. From talking to Fire Chief Keith Smith, I learned the men and women who tried so desperately to save the lives of Batul, Azmeh, Shaail and Shazreh feel a personal sense of loss as well over their inability to effect a different outcome. There was a heroic effort put forth by all members of our public safety personnel on that dreadful night. According to Smith, “Kyle and Brad broke every rule in the book, but absolutely did the right thing.” Jeff Worrell is a local business owner. JOHN SCHULER IS DEFINITELY A VALUABLE PLAYER

t’s amazing how some things work out. On Dec. 11, I interviewed Carmel’s John Schuler, a longtime civic leader (he’s advised ALL 5 mayors) about his memories of his time in Carmel. On Dec. 12, I attended the Carmel Chamber’s annual awards luncheon. I learned one more thing about John at the luncheon. The BIG award is the chamber’s MV2 (Most Valuable Volunteer) Award. Guess who the very first winner (in 2001) was? None other than John Schuler. John grew up in the southeastern Indiana Ohio River town Danny of Aurora. He took a O’Malia job out of high school (Aurora, now South Dearborn) in 1963, with Standard Materials in Hamilton, Ohio. By 1966, Martin Marietta had bought Standard and John was transferred to their stone quarry in Lapel. John and his wife (high school sweetheart Pat) built a home on Lexington Avenue in Carmel in 1971 He spent most of his career with Martin Marietta, retiring in 2005. His job involved “lobbying and public relations.” And he was great at both.

With the late Jim O’Neal, the inaugural event. There John organized the Carmel was a reception at the new Optimist Club in 1973. His H.H. James Patterson introduces a new law enforcement protagonist after his highly successful Alex Cross series. His new central character has not been fleshed out completely, a task left to future installments. The primary plot stretches the limit of imagination, as do the timing and coincidence of many of the other events. Along the way, Patterson exposes some of the foibles and strengths of his fictional celebrities and provides brief glimpses inside the prison environment where the climax unfolds. ECENCY. The Encarta Dictionary defines decent (adj.) as “conforming to accepted standards of moral behavior. Moral behavior is based on what somebody’s conscience suggests is right or wrong, rather than on what rules or the law says should be done.” Children are not born decent or moral. Decency is a learned behavior. Children learn from our behavior. I say it is indecent to flaunt sexual posturing in a public place because I don’t live that way. I say it is indecent to suggest that we all accept sexual Becky Kapsalis innuendos as a means Ask YiaYia of social acceptance because sexual innuendos are not a means of social acceptance for me. Can I keep my children from being attracted to the exposures they will be getting outside the home? No, I can’t. But they will know they are acting in an indecent manner, unacceptable to our family values. Children give us plenty of clues on the lessons

they are learning from us. Their choices will develop their self-worth or establish their consequences. We like to blame our indiscretions on divorce, homelessness, society, environment social status and competition, but the bottom line is blame never comes into play when we live with decency in and away from our home. Victoria’s Secret and the like are perhaps suggesting they are putting decency aside for their bottom line – profit! We can teach our children by using Victoria’s Secret as an example of exploiting. We can teach our children that being decent is a responsibility not an asset. I, personally, am offended by the indecent exploitation of such retailers as Libby Lu, for example, because, I believe profit is being made from young girls pretending to be 5-10 years older than what they are. TAX ADVICE FOR SMALL BUSINESS: Susan Wiggenhorn, a master tax advisor at H&R Block, will be the featured speaker at The Network of Women in Business’s Entrepreneur Special Interest Group Meeting from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Jan. 3 at the LePeep Restaurant at Keystone Crossing, 8487 Union Chapel Road., Indianapolis. Wiggenhorn will discuss “Tax Planning for the Small Business Owner.” She will share tips and strategies small business owners can use in preparing to meet with their tax professional. WHY ARE WE LATE? According to one recent study, those who are late were second only to “office gossip” as the thing that makes co-workers crazy, writes Jared Sandberg in The Wall Street Journal. “Even late people can’t stand when others are late, in part because from the point of view of habitually late people, meetings start very promptly.” Dr. Piers Steel notes that there’s no single theory as to why some people are always late, but suggests that in many cases it’s that the dawdlers “can’t get motivated before their deadlines.” Others are less charitable, observing that some people use their lateness like a weapon. Leil Lowndes, author of “How to Talk to Anyone,” admits that she gets off on being late. “Subconsciously, I might feel like I’m feeling more important than these people because they’re all waiting for me,” she says. — coolnews@reveries.com

HOLIDAY SHOPPING PROVIDES INCENTIVES

he holidays are here and another shopping season (for those of us who only shop for the holidays) has come and gone. Chances are you made some purchases online. Some studies suggest that as many as 50 percent of holiday shoppers made an online purchase. Does that signal the end of the retail store? Not by a long shot. Instead, it is a glimpse of the future, which will be populated by retail outlets complemented by virtual stores that provide a different level of information and customer service. Did you know that sometimes you David Cain can fi nd better prices On Marketing online? It only makes sense, considering the retailer’s costs are lower for the online store compared to the physical retail store. Online stores don’t pay rent, they don’t pay utilities, and they aren’t staffed with sales consultants. It would make sense that they can afford to sell items cheaper online – it’s a lower cost platform. Despite costs being lower, most retailers don’t want to create competition for

themselves by offering lower costs online. However, it is a growing trend for retailers to want to push some of the retail traffic online – especially for certain customers, like me, who don’t enjoy shopping. So it is not uncommon to see incentives, such as lower costs on some items, products that are only available online, and free shipping, at their virtual store. Generally, online shopping is more targeted. If you are shopping online, you probably have some idea of what you want to buy. That is a contributing factor to why retail stores won’t disappear any time soon. They provide a refuge where shoppers can shop. Browsing occurs online and, especially for clothing,

most take a leap of faith that the item will match their expectations, including correct sizing. So don’t look for your local retail store to leave the landscape. How about the future? Right now we generally enjoy broadcast programming on a television or specific “content” on the Internet. Some day not too distant, the two will converge. That future will allow selling online to be more advanced. Imagine viewing your niche program on your “screen” (not necessarily a television) and being able to purchase items in a specific scene of your movie or show. Imagine instead of a remote control you have a keyboard and mouse? Imagine if you could click on items in a scene and the movie would pause? Imagine if you could explore items you clicked and make an immediate purchase? Well, this world of imagination is currently under development. It might not be the next shopping season, but there will be a holiday in your future where you can explore products in a movie or show, buy them, or send a note to a friend to add the product to your shopping list. Challenges: There are older and lessexpensive homes surrounding this newly constructed property. One-fifth of an acre will cost you $100-$150K in the Arts & Design District, compared to a half an acre for the same price elsewhere in suburban Carmel.

SLEEP RIGHT OR DIE: Too much or too little sleep can boost your risk of death, researchers report. “Our findings indicate that consistently sleeping seven or eight hours a night is optimal for health,” said Jane E. Ferrie, of University College London Medical School. Among participants who slept 6-8 hours a night at the start of the study, both an increase and a decrease in nightly sleep duration was associated with a 110 percent excess risk of cardiovascularrelated death. — Womenshealthmag.com

agreed with me. If you’ve ever had to over come a deadly disease like I have, then you’re aware it is difficult to change life-long habits. This was like putting a cocktail in front of a recovering alcoholic. It was terribly insensitive and the austere Cancer group blew a golden opportunity to educate, not to reinforce poor eating habits. There were no fresh vegetables or fruit, nor bottled water, marinated veggie salads, bean salads, sliced tomatoes, corn on the cob or anything that resembled sensible food. But there were plenty of cupcakes, sugary soft drinks, baked beans with carcinogenic bacon, hot dogs and hamburgers on white bread buns. “Wendell, you’re getting too upset. We wanted it to be a classic cookout theme,” the cook bristled defensively. “What kind of message are you sending out to these folks? English scientists discovered that processed sugar feeds cancer. CARB YOURSELF: Carbs are the optimal workout food. “Not the simple ones, because they wind you up and drop you down,” says Jackie Berning, Ph.D., R.D., of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. “You want complex carbohydrates in their natural package, aka whole grains.” A whole-grain bagel is an ideal presweat-session pick: You’ll digest it slowly because of all the fiber, which will deliver a steady flow of energy over time rather than one big burst. — Womenshealthmag.com

t still gives me nightmares! Several years ago, I was urged to attend a cancer survivors picnic sponsored by the management of the Central Indiana Cancer Center. There were 200 people there chatting, eating and enjoying a band. Like a Monet painting, from a distance, everything looked cool until I saw the smoke and charbroiled hot dogs and hamburgers being flame grilled by the head of the CICC. I was previously informed by the woman planning the event that Eli Lilly & Co. gave them an $11,000 grant to pull this “honorable” event off. That’s $550 per person, which included the band and rental of the outdoor facility. My career for 35 years has been catering, but $550 per person? Wendell Fowler When I asked her if they were serving any meat, her response was exuberant. “YES, I LOVE MEAT. I’m a meat eater and always will be.” she proclaimed. I ask her why she was forcing her values on these recovering cancer patients. Silence.

DRY SKIN? Winter weather drying out your skin? Only wash your face once a day — in the p.m. — to get the day’s makeup and grime off. There’s really no need for morning cleansing. If you need that splash to wake up, put some of your lightweight moisturizer on damp hands and rinse off with warm water. You’ll still get the dead skin cells off just by rinsing. A cream cleanser and heavy-duty moisturizer can also help prevent dryness. — Prevention.com

HEALTH WATCH BILATERAL BIAS: In life, we usually reach or step with one arm or one leg at a time. Then we hit the gym, and we immediately plant both feet or grab a bar with both hands. This “bilateral bias,” as Robert dos Remedios, C.S.C.S., calls it, often results in a dominant limb negotiating more of the weight than its weaker counterpart. This can lead to physical imbalances, performance flaws, and eventual injury. If you do a bilateral exercise (the bench press, for example) on Monday, for your next two workouts, swap in unilateral exercise (dumbbell alternating bench press) instead. This trick will prevent injuries and make you stronger, faster. — menshealth.com TAKE OFF HOLIDAY WEIGHT: Here are a few tips from Carmel Total Fitness to help you take off the holiday pounds: Staying active will help increase your metabolism

plus burn calories. Drink at least 68 ounces of water per day. Load up on fruit and veggies in order to feel too full for the high caloric treats. Buy a pedometer and shoot for 10,000 steps a day. Be creative, do walking lunges, squats or even power walk in the airport if you are traveling. ONE-MINUTE UPPERBODY TONER: This will work at home or in the office. Do standing pushups. Place hands on a desk or counter and bend elbows, lowering chest, then push back up. — prevention.com HANGOVER CURE: Prevent dehydration, which fuels hangovers, by drinking a hydrating sports drink before bed or first thing the next morning, suggests Carolyn O’Neil, co-author of “The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous!” Electrolytes in the fluid rehydrate your system for faster recovery. — Quick and Simple

H

ave you been getting a lot of e-mails advertising live TV and movies on your computer for a one-time charge? Live and streaming video on the Internet is booming, so wherever there is a crowd, there is bound to be a con. One red flag that pops up on my radar is when you see an advertisement stating “a one-time charge.” Legitimate access to copyrighted movies, music and live TV content is generally made available in one of three ways: free as a promotion or a teaser, on a per use charge (much like buying music from iTunes), or through a monthly subscription. The one-time Gary Hubbard charge offers are Technology often scams to get you to pay for a software program that is readily available for free and they are often trying to encourage you to use illegal file sharing networks. In some cases, they may just want your credit card information. The exception to this would be paying for

the enhanced version of a free program like the Real Player Plus, but buying the enhanced version does not give you access to anything different than the free Real Player version. If you think about it for a minute, no other legitimate content delivery system is based on a one-time charge (cable TV, newspapers, magazines). When you stop paying, you stop getting. It’s a simple business model to follow! There are lots of legitimate places on the Internet to watch live or archived streaming content that does not require you to pay. If you are a news junkie, you can watch CNN live or choose from their posted archives at www.cnn.com/video. If you want to tickle your funny bone, checkout www.comedycentral.com for archived videos from “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report,” “SouthPark” and a host of other popular shows. Various television stations from around the world offer free live streams that you can access from sites like www.wwitv.com, www. channelchooser.com and www.streamick.com. All of the major broadcasting companies have video archives of their popular shows on their Web sites and many even include full

episodes that you can watch on demand. If you are a space junkie, you can watch live video feeds from the Kennedy Space Center at http:// science.ksc.nasa.gov and from NASA at www.nasa. gov/multimedia/nasatv. Technology junkies may want to checkout Digital Life TV at http://dl.tv, Cnet’s live and archived tech videos at www.cnettv.com and gamers will want to bookmark www.g4tv. com. Be careful of sites that seem to be able to provide you with just about everything under the sun (television, movies, music) from what they claim to be all the major broadcast companies and movie studios. These sites are generally setup as adware sites that are just trying to trick you into installing something sneaky onto your computer. If you have never heard of a site, do some research via a search engine before you start using any of the content or video tools from that site.

BLUEPRINT FOR IMPROVEMENT By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling Question: We would like to upgrade our kitchen without spending the money it takes to replace the cabinets and completely remodel. Do you have any ideas to accomplish this task? Answer: The latest Remodeling magazine “Cost vs. Value” report revealed that minor kitchen remodels give homeowners a 73 percent return on investment. Even minor upgrades can have a dramatic effect. Here are some good “bang for the buck” ideas: Refinish the existing cabinets: Older cabinets can be painted or glazed to give them a completely new look. This can be done by hand by an experienced decorative painter or by a custom refinishing company in a spray shop for a more “professional” look. Upgrade the cabinet moldings: Remove the existing cabinet crown molding and replace it with two or more new stacked moldings to give your cabinets a “custom” look. Add under-cabinet molding to enhance the bottom of the wall cabinets. Add a filler piece above the refrigera-

tor to eliminate the typical gap and make it appear more custom-designed. Add under-cabinet and pendant lighting: Furnish and install new under-cabinet halogen lighting on a dimmer switch. This is a great way to flood the countertops with light and eliminate shadows. A skilled electrician can hide all the wiring from view. Also, if you have an island, consider installing three new pendant lights centered over the island. Enhance the island: Consider adding beadboard or decorative panels to the sides and back of the island. Replace the standard shoe molding around the island with extra-tall 5-1/4” base molding. Add decorative “corbel” supports under the countertop overhang. Repair and stain the floor tile grout: Most existing tile floors have discolored grout. If you like the style of the tile and its in good shape, you may want to have the grout stained and sealed. Have a remodeling question? Ask Larry Greene, owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. You may e-mail him at lgreene@caseremodeling.com or call 846.2600.

At room temperature, the wine’s unique flavors — fruit, oak, whatever — are more obvious. Decanting: Let wine breathe for 2 to 3 hours. Aeration speeds up the oxidation process that takes years to occur in a sealed bottle. This smoothes out the taste and brings out complex flavors and aromas. Tasting: First, give it a sniff, which primes your palate. Take a sip and let the wine hit every part of your mouth. You’ll taste several flavors at once. A SPUR-OF-THE-MOMENT SOIRÉE A spur-of-the-moment soiree is one of the small pleasures of life and it doesn’t require nearly as much effort as you’d think. To pull it off these days, you’ll need the minimum of preparation and the maximum of flexibility. In short, you need to be ready to play host at the last minute for a cocktail party..

No time for that. In fact, I recommend calling during the day when people are at work and just leaving the details on their answering machine or sending e-mail. In addition, Wojtkiewicz talked about the value of an art degree, especially the program where he teaches at Bowling Green State University, and the artist was able to provide practical advice on becoming a studio artist. “This is the kind of community outreach and education that really benefits the students,” Kane said. “It’s great to have the galleries in the Arts & Design District on our doorstep.” Barbara E. When gallery owner Evan Lurie asked painter Dennis Wojtkiewicz ( Voit-kev-ich) to meet with a group of Advanced Placement art students from Carmel High School recently, the artist was more than willing. “When I was approached about it, I was happy to do it,” the artist said recently in a phone interview from his studio in Bowling Green, Ohio. “About 12 kids showed up, and I was impressed that they would come in on a Saturday – I mean, that they would give up a Saturday for the opportunity to meet an artist.” Wojtkiewicz was especially impressed with the good questions they asked him about his work. His paintings, which are on view at Evan Lurie Fine Art Gallery, are primarily largescale still lifes, including an oversized slice of melon. Prices on his works range from $9,000 to $13,500. “In my work, I want to get away from the commonplace approach to the traditional table-top, tableau-style still life,” Wojtkiewicz said. “My work is both minimalist, because I reduce the object to a simple shape within a format, and maximalist, because I paint the living daylights out of the thing.” For Carmel High School art teacher Jon Kane, Wojtkiewicz’s appearance at the first Carmel Arts & Design District gallery walk in November was a sensational chance for his pupils to ask questions and hear the opinions

Open at the Fashion Mall for five years, Maggiano’s Little Italy is a national chain offering a wide variety of Southern Italy-influenced cuisine and an extensive wine list, floor manager Michael Ayers said. Ayers calls the portions “very generous” and said the sausage and ground beef lasagna, baked ziti, chicken parmesan and Rigatoni D – white meat chicken, mushrooms and a marsala cream sauce – are the most popular menu items. The restaurant serves food “family style,” which is a three-course meal consisting of two appetizers, two salads, two pastas, two entrees and two desserts, and each course is an “endless plate,” Ayers said, so diners don’t have to worry about running out of food. “It’s definitely a nice way to bring family and friends together,” Ayers said. When it comes to medical emergencies, a few minutes can make a world of difference. Clarian would like to recognize all the men and women who serve as firefighters, police officers, paramedics and emergency medical technicians. They tirelessly protect our community with timely responses, rapid decision-making, and unwavering professionalism. They not only serve the citizens of Hamilton County, they also serve as role models for our children and young adults. Keeping our homes, families and lives safe and healthy. Thank you.
