Encore-Sotheby’s to build HQ in Meridian Corridor

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com Encore-Sotheby’s International Realty, a boutique real estate firm with more than $200 million in business for 2016, development announced the construction of a new Indiana headquarters along Carmel’s Meridian corridor.

The $5 million building will have nearly 20,000 square feet of space and also will be home to a local office for Omaha, Nebraska-based Jetlinx, a private air travel company. Jetlink has an office at Indianapolis International Airport that it plans to keep.

The first floor of the building will have a restaurant and possibly some retail, but no contracts have been signed. Outdoor dining is planned along with a parking lot and on-street parking. The three-story building at 12411 Pennsylvania St.. will have a rooftop garden.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said no tax incentives were offered for the deal except “our usually low property tax rates.”

Brainard said he was happy to see the project take shape at the intersection of Old Meridian and Pennsylvania streets, which is a triangular property that could be hard to develop.

“We are also very pleased to see the creativity in design and construction on a building that will occupy a rather odd-shaped lot in a very busy corridor,” he said. “We look forward to

Dispatches Crash claims Carmel man’s life – A Westfield single-vehicle crash killed a Carmel man at 2:04 a.m. Dec. 11 near 15300 Towne Rd. Westfield Police Dept. officers were dispatched to the area when a witness dialed 911 after seeing a white truck off the road against a tree. David Dishon, 58, of Carmel, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The incident is still under investigation, and according to a press release from WPD, road conditions do not seem to have been a factor. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.

CCS population expected to dip

“Ultimately, the projection is that we’ll have a total decline in enrollment of close to 1,000 students, but that is not anything new to us,” McMichael McMichael said, referring to past demographic studies.

The study also shows that most people moving into CCS are in the 0 to 9 and 25 to 44 age groups and that the city’s average age will rise from 39.1 in 2010 to 43.7 in 2025.

Carmel Clay Schools is expecting its student population to decrease in the next decade as fewer new homes are built education and the population ages.

Associate Supt. for Business Affairs Roger McMichael reviewed the results of a recent demographic study with the school board at its Dec. 12 meeting. He said the projections are on track with what was predicted in 2013, the last time CCS conducted a demographic study.

CCS enrollment was up this year, but the district is starting to see smaller class sizes at the elementary level.

CCS outlines new boundaries Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Clay Schools board met Dec. 12 to discuss new district boundaries for school board members, recognize several individuals and groups for accomplishments and more.

What happened: The school board approved a resolution outlining new district boundaries for school board members.

What it means: The district boundaries for where school board members must reside had not been reviewed since 1999, so CCS created an updated map that balances the population in the three districts. It does not affect voters, who will continue to vote for all five school board seats.

What’s next: The new district boundaries will be publicized, and after a 120-day remonstrance period the Indiana State Board of Education will review them. CCS can officially adopt the new boundaries after the state makes its decision.

What happened: The school board recognized outgoing members Kathie Freed and Patricia Hackett, whose terms expire at the end of the year.

What it means: Board members thanked Hackett, who decided not to run for re-election, and Freed, who lost her bid for re-election, for their work. Both women were given the opportunity to share their thoughts as their terms come to an end.

What’s next: Lin Zheng and Katie Browning will officially join the school board in January.

What happened: The school board officially recognized several students and groups for recent accomplishments.

What it means: Special recognition went to West Clay Elementary, which was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School; the Smoky Row Elementary 2016 State Spell Bowl Champions; Carmel High School students Sarah Griffin, Kamna Gupta, Sameer Lely and Ryan Middleton, who received perfect AP scores; the Carmel Marching Band, which won the 2016 Bands of America championship; the CHS football team, which won the 2016 state championship; and several CHS students who won the 2016 Rose-Hulman Mathematics Competition.

Former principal remembered for wit, wisdom

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Ryan Newman treasures the impact Jon Teuscher made on his life and career.

Newman, now the IN MEMORIAM Carmel Clay Schools director of instructional technology and data solutions, said Teuscher, then College Wood Elementary principal, gave him the opportunity to work in school administration as College Wood’s assistant principal Teuscher and the confidence to know he could succeed in that position.

“His wisdom, not just about school, but about life in general, was profound,” Newman said. “More than anything, he modeled for me how to act as a professional, as a husband and as a friend.”

Teuscher, 66, died Dec. 4 following a 15-month battle with esophageal cancer.

Friends and family attended a Celebration of Teuscher’s Life open house Dec. 10 at College Wood. Teuscher served Carmel schools for more than 20 years as an elementary teacher and principal. After being an elementary teacher at Forest Dale and Woodbrook,

Teuscher served as principal at Mohawk Trails Elementary from 1989 to 1999 and College Wood from 1999 to 2008.

“Jon had a tremendous impact on College Wood when he came to our building, as he brought a tremendously thoughtful and caring demeanor,” Newman said. “Jon was truly focused on the details of school and had a genuine concern for each student. He always amazed me with his ability to call students by name and to know about them and their family. Those interactions had a way of making each student feel important.”

And he always made Newman laugh.

“The best thing about working with Jon was the laughter that ensued, as Jon’s wit and humor were without fail,” Newman said.

“When I was transitioning as principal to College Wood, he spent time sharing important information about the ins and outs of the school he dearly loved,” Pitman said. “But most importantly, he spent time sharing all the wonderful things about our students, staff members and their families. Family was the most important aspect in Jon’s life, and he knew that if I understood the importance of family, I would be successful.”

Emerson Hackett, 23, was a student when Teuscher was College Wood principal.

“He always made a personal connection with the kids. He wasn’t just an authority figure in the distance,” Hackett said. “He helped me with my long distance running, which is unusual for a principal to do.”

Teuscher helped Hackett develop a running schedule when he learned of his interest and ran with him during the Creekside 5K race that helped Emerson reach his goal of winning the 10-and-under race.

Teuscher is survived by Deb, his wife of 44 years; daughter, Valerie; son-in-law, Greg Savage; and four grandchildren.

Ryan Richmond learned of an illustration contest through a Facebook friend, who had been chosen as one of ACHIEVEMENT the winners in the past.

“I thought I might as well throw my hat in the ring, and, honestly, I didn’t know much about the contest,” Richmond said. “When I got the call, I was not only completely shocked that I won for my quarter, but I was also Richmond completely unaware of the scale of the competition and what it entailed. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and feel very blessed to be in this situation.”

The Carmel resident was recently announced as a winner in the Illustrators of the Future contest, which is in its 28th year.

Richmond, a Franklin Community High School alum, graduated from Herron School of Art and Design in 2016.

“Being chosen as one of the quarterly winners of this contest is incredible,” Richmond said. “It’s validation not only for myself, but also for anyone else who has played a role in me getting to where I am today.”

Shop for Kids leaves children happy during the holidays

On Dec. 10, members of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office paired with approximately 40 lessfortunate kids went shopping at a Target in Fishers. Children were able to spend $130 each. Officers, deputies and employees drove the children in a police caravan from the sheriff’s office to the store.

Firefighter patriarch to retire

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Some things just run in the family, although a firefighting career isn’t necessarily hereditary.

The Maners brothers credit family their father, Darrell, with their careers at the Westfield and Carmel fire departments. Jeremy, 35, of the Carmel Fire Dept. and Jason, 32, of the Westfield Fire Dept., recall memories growing up in the firehouse.

“Growing up we had some good memories of going to see him at the firehouse and growing up in that atmosphere,” Jason said.

“It was always fun to go visit and play on the firetrucks and see him in that position of being a firefighter. It was something we always grew up with together, and it gave us that drive to do it ourselves. We saw how much he helped the community, and I know how proud of the position he was. You always have that dream as a kid, ‘Oh, I could be a firefighter.’”

Darrell was originally a firefighter with Washington Township, beginning Nov. 17, 1978.

But 10 years later, the township merged with Indianapolis Fire Dept. Thirty-eight years and one month later, the 69-year-old will retire Dec. 31. Jason was hired by WFD in July 2009, and Jeremy was hired by CFD in October 2009.

So far, six members of the Maners family have been firefighters spanning three generations.

Through the years, Darrell said the biggest change has been safety precautions taken by the departments, but there’s one thing that hasn’t changed.

“You’re always helping somebody, that’s the best part. No matter what it is, somewhere in that run, you’re helping somebody,” he said.

Darrell has no big plans for retirement other than spending time with his family and grandchildren.

CLC group serves in Guatemala

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com Teams from Cornerstone Lutheran Church have been traveling to the village of El Mageuy in Guatemala since 2008, but their faith most recent trip brought them to a neighboring village.

Last month, a team consisting of Travis and Micah Walton, Chris and Catherine Gahl, Jamie and Cathy Graves, Michele Stanton, Brad Reay and Bill Culbertson served for the first time in El Trapiche through a partnership with Central American Lutheran Mission Society.

“We just kind of adopted El Mageuy, Zacapa.

We've been going down there for eight years building homes, funding projects like adding an addition to their local school, and so forth,” team leader Travis Walton said. “We felt called to go to the neighboring village this year.

This is the first time we have served in this community, which was a smaller community, about 140 people. They finally allowed us, after talking with them for a couple of years, to come out and help.”

The church funded a new roof for the village’s school, which also serves as its shelter.

The group also taught Vacation Bible School, painted the school building and assisted in dental care.

“We hired a local dentist to come into this village. For four days, he did teeth cleaning, teeth repair and tooth extractions,” Walton said. “Most never see a dentist, so it was a huge success. We felt like most everyone who needed dental attention received it.”

Of the nine church members who traveled to Guatemala, seven had been on previous outreach trips. For Walton and his wife, this marked their fourth trip to Guatemala.

“We always serve in the same village in Guatemala because we build relationships with the people there,” he said. “We get the most out of going back and seeing the friends we've developed over the last three trips. Most people who go once feel a calling to go back.”

Woodland Country Club, charter member celebrate 60 years of golf, friendship

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Woodland Country Club has been a Carmel staple for 60 years, offering golf and social events for its members as a tiny rural town blossomed into a thriving subcover story urb around it.

Dee Cooler is the club’s only member who has seen it all. The Carmel resident and her husband were among the first to join the club when it formed in 1956.

“It’s been our life. We made our first home on Woodland (Drive), and we have had many important social events at Woodland, weddings and other celebrations,” Cooler said. “It’s like my second home.”

Cooler, 87, joined other Woodland Country Club members for a 60th anniversary party Dec. 10. Guests enjoyed 1950s-themed food and drinks as they shared memories and recognized longtime club members.

The beginning

Woodland’s golf course predates the club. William “Bill” Diddel, a golf architect who designed dozens of courses in Indiana and many more across the nation, purchased 160 acres of farmland in 1928 with a goal of creating his own golf course.

Twenty years later, a nine-hole course opened to the public, with nine more holes added the next year.

In 1955, Diddel said he would build a clubhouse and swimming pool if 300 charter members committed to founding a club. The campaign was a success, and Woodland Country Club was born in 1956.

Cooler remembers committing to become a member at a dinner for those interested in early 1956. She hasn’t looked back since.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes,” she said. “(At first) there was

There was a farm on the east side of the golf course.

There were pigs and cows when you were playing on the east side of the golf course.”

Keystone Parkway came through town in the 1960s, bringing more families to Carmel and the country club.

Cooler said she and her husband, who died in April at age 90, built their first home near the golf course. Harry Cooler Jr. was an architect, and his projects included restoration of the Indiana Statehouse Building in 1988.

Although the family eventually relocated to Brookshire Village, Dee Cooler has fond memories of raising her four children on Woodland Drive.

“We loved raising them at Woodland, because I didn’t have to do a lot of driving,” she said, recalling summers spent watching the kids perform swim routines at the pool or learning to play golf.

The future

With 60 successful years in the books, Woodland Country Club is moving ahead optimistic about its future. Boasting a membership of 479 families and a waiting list of many more, the club offers an Olympic-size swimming pool, two outdoor tennis courts, a fitness facility and an 18-hole golf course redesigned in 2002 by World Golf Hall of Fame member Pete Dye. “Woodland continues to work on making the members’ experience a special one,” Woodland Country Club manager Robert Reynolds said. “While there are no major projects in the next few years, Woodland is always looking to improve the overall member experience.”

Cooler believes the club is in good hands as it prepares for the future.

“Woodland is in the best place that it’s ever been,” she said.

As for herself, Cooler doesn’t plan on slowing down soon.

Although she’s switched from an 18-hole to a 9-hole golf group in recent years, she still enjoys hitting the links with her longtime friends, recently purchasing new equipment she plans to use for years to come.

“I got myself a periwinkle golf bag after 16 years of using my beige one,” she said. “It’s beautiful. I have to stay in good health so I can continue using it!”

A fire, party and more Woodland Country Club has celebrated its share of happy occasions, but in March 1969 tragedy struck when a fire burned down the clubhouse, which had opened less than two years earlier.

Newspaper reports from the time state that the fire caused $250,000 in damage. The pro shop, a kitchen and cocktail lounge were all lost. No one was injured in the blaze.

Dee Cooler said she recalls that fumes from refinishing of clubs in the Pro Shop exploded to start the fire. Her husband had designed the clubhouse, which featured stucco and a red roof, inspired by a trip to Spain. He designed the family’s home in the same style, which is still reflected in the house along Woodland Drive.

The clubhouse was rebuilt in December 1969 and stood until 1989, when it was demolished to make way for the existing building. The last big party in the old clubhouse is among Cooler’s favorite memories at Woodland.

“We had a big cake to celebrate, out with the old and in with the new,” she said. “We did our line dancing. We always had such a good time in those days.”

Smile through fear and sadness Commentary by Terry Anker He was among the first African-American men to host a national television program.

His life was cut short among the many to die of lung cancer. He raised a daughter, who, like him, would come to know fame and the many privileges and obligations inure to the designation. Nathaniel Adams Cole lives in the heart and songs of many this season, more than ever. Nat “King” Cole, who likened to the children’s nursery rhyme evoked by his moniker, earned his place as a troubadour for millions. Surely, he suffered immeasurable humiliation as a black man subjugated to the standards of “separate” but equal. There is no place for this identity in passing through this world – or any other.

Yet he, like many others, found his way.

In bringing voice to music provided by the famed Charles Spencer Chaplin for his 1936 film “Modern Times,” Nat was no doubt tipping his hat to the impoverished English lad-made-good, Charlie. While the lyrics and title came later from a duet of songwriters,

John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons to be exact, the sentiment originated from an earlier, more rudimentary and distinctly thoughtful place. Namely, that life is not as we wish it to be – so what do we do about it? Charlie, somewhat cavalier by today’s ethos, suggested — no, asserted — that that we should simply grin and bear it.

To use the much more elegant, even erudite, words of Turner & Parsons, “Smile, what’s the use of crying?” Surely, the admonishment to “hide every trace of sadness” violates some contemporary rule to stew in our supposed transgressions. Is smiling through our “fear and sadness” a talisman to endure a perilous, if not intentionally vindictive, world? Is a smile enough to inoculate against the aspersions and ill-will of the haters in our ranks? Let’s hope so.

I’ve finally gotten my holiday groove on, people! I’m just back from a 6 a.m. run to Meijer, followed by humor an hour at Kohl’s. With the help of Amazon, Ticketmaster and a few swigs of a lovely Merlot, I am feeling quite good about the Christmas season. True, I have not written the annual family missive, nor have I mailed a single card. In fact, I haven’t even ordered the cards, so I may very well be sending glad tidings for the New Year!

I’m not worried. “Better late than never” is our family motto!

Now, if only my husband, Doo, would stop being such a Grinch. I don’t know if it’s Doo or all men, but whenever the stress hits enforce, he cannot seem to pull himself together. He’s been oscillating between “I don’t care if Maddie has dance, we’re going to decorate the front porch NOW” and “I can’t possibly get anything done if you keep nagging me about addressing envelopes.” This is why I’m playing Bing Crosby non-stop around this joint. I need a sultry crooner to keep me from the ledge.

I’m also stuffing my face with bourbon-soaked English fruitcake to keep my retorts in check. I want to tell Doo to quit whining and go to the office if he needs to work. Seriously, anyone here expecting to be left alone in the peace and quiet for seven hours on a Sunday is living in a winter wonderland. This place is the Island of Misfits Toys, my friends. We have cats vomiting on rugs, kids freaking out over exams, cars breaking down, and little to no chance of avoiding illness in the next few days. Plus, I teach through Dec. 22. Momma ain’t gonna be around to ensure everyone stays on Santa’s nice list. Let the reindeer games commence!

My point is, I need Doo to get on board my “Polar Express,” for him to take a moment to enjoy this crazy season, and more importantly, to revel in my spectacular purchasing prowess. Also, we should probably get on the card thing.

Poking fun at gifts Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Each year I poke fun at the world-famous Hammacher Schlemmer gift catalog and highlight its most ridiculous holiday humor offerings. This latest December issue had a few doozies, like: The SPINNING SPAGHETTI FORK, which first appeared in the catalog three years ago. It was a boon for people too tired to drive to Olive Garden, only to then have to actually twirl the spaghetti themselves. Apparently, the device was such a hit that in this month’s catalog we now have the LAZY LICKER’S SPINNING ICE CREAM CONE. Yes, as we celebrate the 115th anniversary of the ice cream cone, the folks at Hammacher Schlemmer have finally found a way to take all the fun and guesswork out of eating America’s favorite treat. Christmas album sales to benefit Haiti

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Jim Geiman had a fundraising idea to raise money for a church music ministry by producing a Christmas album.

However, when Hurricane Matthew giving back slammed Haiti in October, he decided to devote the proceeds to the storm victims.

“Once we saw that, it was a no-brainer. They were devastated,” Geiman said.

Geiman runs the Glass Eye Group, a video production service operated out of Kingston’s Music Showcase, 340 Ridgepoint Dr., Carmel.

Kingston’s allowed Geiman to use the space and equipment to make the CD, called “Christmas from the Heart.”

Many houses were destroyed during the hurricane. The community’s school and clinic lost their roofs.

“We were first going to give a couple of bucks for each CD sold,” Geiman said. “When we found out how bad it was, we decided we would give it all. They lost everything. They lost all their livestock and all their crops.”

Geiman approached vocalist Rick Bzdok, St. Bernard’s music coordinator, about the album and he readily agreed to help. Several other area musicians, including Tim Wright, Devon Ashely, Austin Johnson, Anne Wolfley and Roderick Johnson, donated their talents to the album.

“You go through life and you’ve got to do something to pay back,” Geiman said. “You get a CD that sounds good, and you get to help somebody. It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Geiman said he is hoping to raise $5,000 through album sales.

Geiman said he welcomes other store owners wanting to see it in their stores.

‘Christmas Carol’ now on stage

In food processor, combine pecans, 1 tablespoon sugar substitute and cinnamon. Process until finely ground. Toss with butter and egg white; press onto bottom of 9-inch springform pan, rounding up to cover pan seam. Bake until golden and set, eight to 10 minutes. Cool com-

To make filling: Reduce oven heat to 325F. In large bowl, combine cream cheese, 2/3 cup sugar substitute and cream. With electric mixer at medium speed, beat until smooth.

Add pumpkin puree, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice, mixing to combine. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until just combined. Pour batter over crust. Bake until just set, 45-50 minutes. Turn off oven and let stand 10 minutes; transfer to wire rack and cool completely. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, four hours or overnight.

The Impalas to perform at party

“It’s all talented people that event get along and enjoy each other’s company,” singer Michael Wiltrout said of the 10-piece event band. “If you play with people whose company you enjoy, that not only makes it more fun for you, but that energy comes across to the people in the crowd.”

The Impalas will be featured performers at the New Year’s Eve party at 9 p.m. at the Palladium in Carmel. The Impalas will perform on the Palladium stage.

“We do some contemporary stuff and even some Big Band numbers, but our strength is soul music from the ’60s and ‘70s from Stax Records and Motown,” Wiltrout said.

Wiltrout, a 48-year-old Indianapolis resident, started the Impalas with his best friend Adam White in 2001. White, a drummer who lives in St. Louis now because of his wife’s career, helps promote The Impalas.

Wiltrout, a North Central High School graduate, took 12 years to get his undergraduate degree at Indiana University. He had a good reason because he was a professional musician much of the time. Wiltrout was a member of a third wave ska (a fusion of rock and reggae) band called Johnny Socko that was formed in Bloomington.

Even though he had never sung before, some friends suggested he join their band.

“They said they didn’t care if you can be that animated on stage, the singing will come.

And it did, eventually,” Wiltrout said. “It was a great way to spend my 20s.”

Although it’s not his full-time job, Wiltrout loves keeping his hand in music.

“I wouldn’t want a life without it. By the same token I would never solely depend on it for a living again because that’s when it breaks your heart,” Wiltrout said.

The goal for this house was to make the most of the space available .

1. The second bedroom was the first priority.

A small closet was removed to relocate the hallway and another larger, more functional closet was added with previous hallway space.

2. New enlarged dormer: A new hall bath was created by expanding the existing dormer.

The addition of another full bath adds to the function and value of the home.

3. The existing bathroom was remodeled and transformed into a true master bath and is now accessible from the master bedroom through a sliding barn door. These clients really wanted to make the most of their space while still keeping with the original style of their 1920s home 4. The relocation of the hallway gave the upper level a more open and naturally lit layout.

Before Background Info: The owners of this 1920s Meridian Kessler home in Indianapolis needed some extra space for their growing family. They loved their home and their neighborhood, but needed an update to fit the needs of their family.

Before problems: These clients needed an update to the layout of their upper level. The house had unused attic space and the hall bath placement meant looking down the hallway at the commode. They needed another bathroom on the upper level and a dedicated bath for the master suite.
