Interactive sculpture to honor Hoagy Carmichael

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The City of Carmel is making preparations for a new interactive sculpture inspired by the late Hoosier composer CITY NEWS Hoagy Carmichael.

“Homage to Hoagy” is expected to be installed in the spring in the roundabout at City Center Drive and 3rd Avenue SW adjacent to the Palladium. The $435,167 sculpture was created by Arlon Bayliss, the Anderson-based artist who designed the “Beacon Bloom” sculpture in the roundabout at Westfield Boulevard and 96th Street.

The city paid $352,900 for “Beacon Bloom,” which was installed in the fall of 2017.

Inspired by Carmichael classics such as “Stardust,” “In the Still of the Night” and “Skylark,” the 28-foot tall sculpture will feature celestial objects coming out of a gramophone.

It will be complemented by two freestanding 4-foot tall kiosks on the south side of City Center Drive featuring smaller gramophones that will play Carmichael songs and provide information about the composer when their cranks are turned.

“We want to inspire with the beautiful structure, but we also want to educate as much as we can,” said Dan McFeely, a spokesman for the City of Carmel.

“In many ways it is Indiana’s anthem. It was written in Bloomington,” Brainard said.

“This sculpture captures the feel of that song while paying homage to Hoagy Carmichael and his Indiana roots.”

Carmichael was born in Bloomington in 1899.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1925 and a law degree in 1926.

But it didn’t take long for him to begin pursuing music full time, writing dozens of songs performed by some of the 20th century’s most iconic voices before his death in 1981.

“The sculpture will become, I believe, an iconic part of the Carmel landscape for generations and help tell the story of a talented and famous Hoosier,” Brainard said.

The city also is planning to install a $360,000 rose-themed sculpture by Bayliss in the roundabout at N. Pennsylvania and Old Meridian streets.

What happened: The council sent an amendment to its noise ordinance to the Land Use and Special Studies Committee.

The Carmel City Council met Dec. 3 to discuss amendments to its noise ordinance, the creation of a fund to accept donations for a marketing initiative of the Carmel Redevelopment Commission and other items.

What happened: The council sent an ordinance amendment to the Finance, Utilities and Rules Committee that would establish a Carmel Redevelopment Commission Marketing Gift Account Fund.

What it means: With the Carmel Redevelopment Commission preparing to move into new office space in late winter in Midtown, the proposed fund will hold donations for a program in development that CRC Director Henry Mestetsky said “will be an enhancement to the city’s economic development engine.” The new office is expected to contain a scale model of Carmel’s central core designed by Kittworks with magnetic 3-D model buildings. The CRC approved the contract for the project in September.

What’s next: As of press time the committee had not set a meeting date, but the ordinance will go back before the city council for a vote.

What it means: The amendment is in response to complaints about barking dogs, which are not specifically addressed in the current ordinance. The amendment outlines rules for animal noises at homes and businesses within 50 feet of a residential unit, such as kennels.

What’s next: The committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at Carmel City Hall to discuss the ordinance.

The council approved three resolutions that shift funds within various accounts.

What it means: With the end of the year drawing near, the resolutions allow departments to cover unexpected expenses with extra funds from other budget areas. The council approved transferring $188,000 within the Information & Communications Dept. budget to cover modernization initiatives; $100,000 within the Street Dept. general fund to cover damage to public property before insurance reimbursements arrive; and $213,000 from the Dept. of Administration budget and Carmel Fire Dept. budget to the building operations budget to cover electric bills that have grown with the addition of a chiller.

CPD RAISES MORE THAN $7K FOR LLS

By Maria Cook • news@currentincarmel.com A proposal to build approximately 200 dwellings on 59 acres at the northeast corner of Keystone Parkway and 136th DEVELOPMENT Street will go before the Carmel Plan Commission after receiving a 3-1 favorable recommendation Dec. 4 at the committee level.

Carmel-based Old Town Companies is requesting a rezone from residential to planned unit development for The Overlook. The site was previously eyed for development by Beazer Homes, but its proposal was withdrawn in January.

Justin Moffitt of Old Town Companies presented his plan to the committee while addressing previously raised concerns, such as density, tree preservation, outdoor lighting and possible increased traffic on surrounding roads.

Committee member Nick Kestner cast the lone vote against the rezone.

“I think we’re trying to squeeze something in that doesn’t fit,” he said. “I don’t have any problems with the design or the layout of the project, I just have trouble trying to deal with the traffic situation.”

Updates made to the PUD include prohibiting construction vehicles from driving through surrounding neighborhoods and delineating that condos will only be built west of the development’s main thoroughfare.

CCS launches reporting tool

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel Clay Schools has introduced a new two-way communication tool that allows students SCHOOL SAFETY of all ages to anonymously report school safety issues, bullying, violence or other concerns.

The STOPit mobile app, launched Dec. 3, provides real-time reporting of issues and instant feedback from program monitors, which includes school resource officers, certain administrators and CCS Director of Student Services David Woodward.

The app replaces the CCS Anonymous Alert System, which will be discontinued at the end of December. The alert system is only available online and works like sending an email. Woodward said he expects STOPit will be more appealing to students and lead to more reports.

“It’s meeting the kids where they are technologically,” Woodward said.

Students who use the app will remain anonymous to CCS unless they choose to reveal their identity. Incident reports can include text, screenshots and videos.

Woodward said that many students already have strong relationships with school administrators and SROs, but he hopes STOPit will be a useful tool for students who would rather not sit down and talk with an adult.

Carmel changes recycling guidelines

By Sam Elliott news@currentincarmel.com The City of Carmel and its trash and recycling contractor, Republic Services, want the public to be aware ENVIRONMENT of a pair of changes to their recycling guidelines in an effort to keep the process running smoothly at recycling centers.

Plastic bags — as well as any other soft plastic items like plastic wrapping or bubble wrap — can no longer be placed in residents’ curbside bins.

“Anything you can poke your finger through, they’re asking those things not be put in the co-mingled bins for pickup,” said Carmel Utilities’ Sue Maki, manager of envi-

ronmental initiatives and education. “Those plastic bags get caught in these drums that spin around that help sort things and move things along. They get caught in there and jam the machine. They have to stop the assembly line, go and pull out the plastic bags and restart it up again, and that’s happening multiple times per day.”

Plastic bags can still be recycled if taken to merchants who offer in-store Maki recycling. Items collected there are sent to unique facilities designed to process plastic bags.

Another hazard for conventional recycling sorting machines are plastic bottle caps,

which can be recycled but only if they’re still attached to bottles.

“People tend to keep them off, but now we just ask that you keep them on the bottles,” Maki said. “The rule of thumb is for anything smaller than a credit card, don’t throw it in the recycling cart because it doesn’t get sorted properly. With bottle caps, which are mostly small things, just leave them on the bottle.”

In addition to the changes, Maki reminds residents to avoid trying to recycle items like Styrofoam or egg cartons, cardboard pizza boxes contaminated with even just a little bit of grease as well as yard and landscape waste — all items commonly found in Republic’s roadside bins that cannot be recycled.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Although Hamilton County is the wealthiest county in the state, animals at the Humane Society for Hamilton County’s facility don’t have access to many PETS services. HSHC Executive Director Rebecca Stevens said even animal control facilities have more services than the HSHC. “What people have to understand is (our building) is actually missing fundamental areas that even an animal control facility has. Our design today is literally missing an intake area for cats,” Stevens said. “We don’t currently have a medical wing. There are no exercise areas, no storage. There’s no meeting space, no quarantine area for contagious animals.”

However, the animals’ environment may improve soon because of a $12 million capital campaign to construct a new 40,000-square-foot facility at 106th Street and Hague Road in Fishers. The goal is to open the shelter within the next 1,000 days.

The current shelter only has 8,000 square feet of space.

Stevens said the larger facility won’t significantly create more kennel space but will provide room for more educational outreach programs and include traditional humane society amenities, such as a medical wing.

“We are not doubling everything. That’s not the solution, to keep adding more cages. The solution is looking at building a facility that’s going to sustain the growth of this county and its needs,” Stevens said.

The current facility has 223 cages and the new facility will have 348.

HSHC hired Shelter Planners of America to consult in designing the new shelter.

Noise control is a priority in the new facility, which will have plexiglass instead of barred cages.

“Today, the best way to explain the challenge we have is you have a dog in a kennel with no noise control and no visual barrier between dogs on each side or across from it,” Stevens said. “There is very little disease control. You have an animal come into the shelter and it immediately declines, behaviorally and health-wise.”

With the new facility, HSHC will be able to expand its educational and outreach programs.

“We’ve been unable to expand programs, unable to offer the community what we know they want and what we know we can give,” Stevens said. “This is such a great way for us to be able to plant more seeds in our youth, in the community, of kindness and what it means to be kind to animals and the importance of pet adoption.”

Other programs Stevens wants to expand are the Pets Healing Vets program, where a shelter animal is placed with a veteran, and offer long-term placement for active-duty military who are deployed and have no one to care for their pets.

I remember thinking about a book I just read, ‘The Name of the Wind,’ Astashinsky and thinking how the story could’ve been had some things changed,” Astashinsky said. “And then I just turned off the radio and came up with my own fantasy plot, telling myself I could make something better. I never considered myself a writer and certainly didn’t think it was something that could be fun.”

Library encourages winter reading

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com The Carmel Clay Public Library is aiming to keep kids and teens reading during winter break. The library will launch two CCPL programs Dec. 21 toward that goal.

The first program, Book Bingo, will be offered for infants through elementary school-aged children.

“We will have the bingo cards available either here in the library from the children’s desk, or they can download a card from our website,” said Elizabeth Essink, children and youth services manager.

Kids will be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone to earn squares.

“We try to bring some out–the-box ways of approaching reading, so they will be trying different kinds of books that they may or may not read on a regular basis,” Essink said. “The kids can explore across different genres.”

For each bingo (up to three), participants

can choose a toy. If they complete the whole bingo card, they will receive a free book.

The other program, the Young Adult Winter Reading Challenge, takes teens on a tour of book stacks in the library.

Gary Kern and his son, Ron Kern, formed a strong bond through their love of golf, and it’s a legacy that Ron IN MEMORIAM aims to continue after Gary, 80, died Nov. 30.

A golf course architect whose career was launched by the development of the Brookshire neighborhood, Gary inspired his son to pursue the same career, and the two worked togethGary Kern er for several years.

“My favorite memory (of my father) would be when I would step back and watch my dad working with the bulldozer operator shaping the golf course or with the construction guys actually making the formations, watching the artistry,” said Ron Kern, a lifelong Carmel resident. “My dad taught me all that.”

Gary grew up in Kendallville, Ind., and began playing golf as a student at Texas A&M University. After college he moved to Carmel and began his career in the Indiana Dept. of Highways before taking a job with Hamilton County-based civil engineering firm Wiehe Engineers.

includes a golf course. Gary suggested hiring golf course architect Bill Diddel to design the course and worked alongside him to make it a reality. Diddel, a late Carmel resident who designed the original course at Woodland Country Club and many others in the Midwest, encouraged Gary to pursue golf course architecture, and he designed his first course for Tomahawk Hills Golf Club in Jamestown.

During his career Gary designed several golf courses near St. Louis, where he moved in 1983.

Even though Gary spent most of his later years in Missouri, Ron said Carmel always had a special place in his heart.

“It was kind of the frontier (in Carmel)at the time, but it was an exciting place to be and a place he wanted to be,” Ron Kern said.

Fields of dreams Haddad brothers find positions with iconic sports franchises

COVER STORY “I said to him, ‘How cool is it that you get to go to Lambeau Field for work and I get to go to Yankee Stadium,’ two of the most recognizable stadiums in their respective sports,” Radley said. “It’s pretty incredible.”

Radley, 28, has served two seasons as New York Yankees bullpen catcher and coaching assistant. Griffin is spending this season in the Green Bay Packers athletic training residency program. The brothers grew up in Carmel and attended Clay Middle School before graduating from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.

A team player

Radley, a finance major and baseball player at Butler University, signed with the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2013. He played 92 games in four years in the minor leagues, reaching Double-A with Trenton for a game. He spent the second part of 2016 as player-coach at rookie-level Staten Island.

He showed up for spring training in 2017 and was switched to his current role. Before his playing career ended, then-Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was let go after the 2018 season, decided to surprise Haddad and reward him with one at-bat for the Yankees against the Atlanta Braves at Atlanta’s SunTrust Park in a spring exhibition game.

“They made it easy for me to make the transition (to bullpen catcher and coaching),” Radley said. “Stepping away (totally) would have been tough, but I’m still able to use the skills that I have. It’s been enjoyable.”

Radley said he already has expanded his knowledge.

“I’m going to do whatever the team needs me to do,” Radley said. “(They could) ask me to move off to the front office or do more coaching. I’m just enjoying every day. I get to come to work at Yankee Stadium, which is pretty cool.”

The biggest lesson Radley has learned is the amount of preparation that goes into each game.

ball players in the world around, but they also prepare and are able to use the scouting reports around them better than I’ve seen,” Radley said. “In high school, college and minor leagues, you know a little about the opposing teams, but most of it is just go out there and play. These guys catch on to tendencies and tips and other things to take advantage of their weaknesses. It’s always nice to see when it all comes together.”

On a typical day, Radley watches video on opposing hitters and pitchers. He said he does a lot of advance scouting to help prepare game plans.

“I’ll write some reports and figure some things we can do to exploit them and how we should attack them,” Radley said. “Then,

when the players show up, I’m working with the pitchers, catching their bullpen.

Sometimes I throw batting practice. Sometimes I’m just out there working with the infielders. I’m kind of a jack-of-all trades.”

For the first three innings, Radley is in the dugout getting the feel of the game.

“It’s kind of like counter-intelligence,” he said. “Watch to see if the pitcher is giving anything away. Then in the fourth or fifth inning, I’ll head to down to the bullpen.

Guys will get restless or the phone will ring and I’m down there to warm up the guys when they go.”

As the game has transitioned to being more analytics driven, Radley said he has an advantage with his finance background.

“I know numbers and the game a little bit, which is a good combination,” Radley said.

Radley attempts to bridge the gap between the two sides.

“It’s interesting the blend between the old-school baseball guys and the new analytics side,” said Radley, who married Butler graduate Arielle Hemrick, a Brooklyn dentist, in November. Griffin was his best man.

‘My heart lies with football’

Like his older brother, Griffin, 26, was a catcher at Brebeuf. However, a pair of wrist injuries forced Griffin to move to second base to finish up his high school career.

Working with athletic trainers at Brebeuf with his injuries introduced him to the profession and what it entails.

“That was the first realization that sports medicine would be a great way for me to maintain my presence in athletics as well as study something interesting,” Griffin said.

Griffin said he realized he didn’t want to pursue playing baseball after high school.

“My brother is a little more competitive and self-driven when it comes to competition,” he said.

Griffin worked with the football team while an undergraduate at Texas Christian University in 2014. He then worked with Michigan’s football team for two seasons while studying for his master’s degree in sports management. He is on a full, oneyear sports medicine internship with the Packers that can be renewed. However, Griffin might be seeking a full-time position.

“My heart lies with football. That’s where most of my past experience has been, and it’s all been positive,” Griffin said. “It’s a pretty demanding sport as far as sports medicine goes. It keeps you busy and keeps you on your toes. One of the things I enjoy most about football is you are using all the knowledge you learned in school, the upper body, the lower body. Any kind of injury can walk in the door at any time. It can be chronic or acute. You have to be ready for just about anything.”

Griffin enjoys the lifestyle of not having to travel as much as he would with a Major League Baseball or NBA team.

LETTER Democrats have increased presence in Hamilton County

Commentary by Terry Anker Famed Hoosier author and Civil War Gen. Lew Wallace penned what became America’s bestselling novel from 1880 until Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With The Wind” overtook it in the late ‘30s. “Ben Hur: a Tale of the Christ” ultimately begat three feature-length motion pictures, a successful Broadway and traveling stage show and countless other adaptations.

The 1959 film version starring Charlton Heston and directed by William Wyler garnered the mostever Academy Awards – eleven.

The historic epic takes place in occupied Jerusalem during the life, and ultimate crucifixion, of Christ. It tells the story of adopted brothers, one Roman and one a local prince.

Ultimately, they are separated by circumstance.

When Wallace returned from our Civil War, his own life was changed irreversibly by the jarring impact of the conflict. Like it, he imbued in his characters the naivety, and oddly, bloodlust, that marches our young into combat. The story follows an arch from the love these young men feel for each other as children, to the pain of their separation as they each strive to find their own way in the world, and to the inevitability of rivalry that would rise. Ultimately, reconciliation is withheld by death.

Ultimately, Wallace raises questions about forgiveness, hate, superficialities and the pointless nature of endless longing for retaliation. Although Christ is only a minor character, he urges peace.

These and other questions were hotly pursued in the years following our own Civil War. Can coming to understand this context prevent us from living it again?

‘Tis the season to be melancholy Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m a bit worried, friends. The holiday season is off to an unsettling start.

First, my plan to chop HUMOR down a Christmas tree (read: purchase an already cut and netted one at a local hardware store) with all four of our kids backfired when I mixed up two of their work schedules. Do we go without the 14-year-old baby of the family or the soon-to-be-in-college senior? Which do we love more? Tough choice made (though not as tough as we’d anticipated). We broke with tradition and proceeded on our tannenbaum hunt, one child short. Tear.

Once there, we easily decided on the tallest fir in the yard. But then my husband, Doo, broke another long-standing Wilson Yuletide ritual, that of precariously transporting said evergreen back to our house.

He inquired about (gulp), and then signed up for (gasp), delivery! Something about how he didn’t want to deal with the sap and the

frustration of strapping a 15-foot Frazier to our van. Coward. So, we drove home emptyhanded, with no regard for the speed limit or the roundabouts. How is that making memories?

The final lame horse in my off-brand December trifecta had to do with a dessert.

I grew up loving my British grandmother’s fruit cake (which, by the way, has nothing to do with the fact that it’s seeped in bourbon).

My mom has continued making one just for me, but this time, she forgot the special marzipan icing. Now, what am I supposed to do? Eat it plain? Un. Be. Lievable.

How am I to embrace the holidays with everything changing? And it’s not even a tinsel year! Truly unsettling, folks.

Bolt for the Heart reaches goal Commentary by Pierre Twer As we recently completed our seventh annual Bolt for the Heart Family 5K at the beautiful Center ACHIEVEMENT Green in Carmel on a Thanksgiving morning, we were reminded yet again about what a great community we live in. The support for Bolt continues to grow as proven with our record number of participants this year. We welcomed 3,300 runners and walkers from 36 states, which is our best year.

We attained our goal of raising $200,000, which allowed us to meet our ultimate goal of purchasing 134 AEDs for Indiana State Police patrol cars statewide. We, with your help, have placed an AED in all 550 ISP cars.

Additionally, ISP Supt. Doug Carter believes we may be the first state with every state police car equipped with an AED. All of us should be very proud of this and know that lives have been and will continue to be saved.

This success does not happen without you and your family’s participation in Bolt for the Heart. On behalf of the Bolt board of directors, we send a sincere thank you. We also would like to thank the City of Carmel, Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation, the Carmel

Last week, for the 15th year in a row, I continued my tradition of lampooning the annual Hammacher Schlemmer HUMOR Christmas gift catalog. This week, I’ve looked back on some 300 items and picked my favorites from past years. Some are still available in the current collection. Still more are in garage sales.

The gorilla in the room: This is a 96-inch inflatable PVC gorilla for those people who love the expression, “That’s the 800-pound gorilla in the room.” Sure, this might be a funny conversation piece the first time your friends see it, but it will quickly become the 19-pound gorilla on eBay. Company ladder leads to top

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Judy Arnold started out at her company as the receptionist, secretary and bookkeeper.

ACHIEVEMENT Forty years later, the longtime Carmel resident is the owner and president of Carmel-based Data Processing Services, a software company. She acquired the business from owner Dan Barrow in 2011. The company, which started in 1972, moved to Carmel City Center from northern Indianapolis that same year.

“I knew the owner and founder from friends, and my interest in joining his company was I was fascinated with technology,” Arnold said. “Back in the 1970s, people didn’t own computers or PCs. I just loved the concept of developing and writing programs. A friend suggested I talk to Dan Barrow and see about working for him.”

Barrow told Arnold if she came in to answer phones and similar tasks, he would send her to IBM classes.

“I learned programming and did that for a year or two,” Arnold said. “But my love really was in understanding and running the business. After a couple of years of (programming), the company started to grow and I came back to run the financial side of the business.”

eventually the chief financial officer for a number of years.

“Then in 2008 or 2009, I became the chief operating officer, and it was just the perfect transition for me to acquire the business when the owner was ready to retire,” Arnold said. “I knew where everything was, the condition of things and I loved the employees. It’s been a wonderful ride.”

Office administrator Nicki Wilson said Arnold is an inspiration.

“She was able to break the glass ceiling and prove that hard work, dedication and passion can really pay off,” Wilson said.

DPS typically has approximately 25 employees. Arnold said she learned a great deal from Barrow.

“That dedication comes from something that you are passionate about,” Arnold said.

World Smiles Mission has a simple goal: Give the gift of oral hygiene to those in need around the world.

NONPROFIT “I did a lot of research about oral health because of my family’s background (with parents who are dentists) and found that half of the world doesn’t have access to a toothbrush,” Emily Deldar said. “This statistic shocked me and I decided to make a change.”

Last summer, the Carmel High School junior represented the school at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston.

“At the Congress, I was inspired to do something bigger than myself. When I came home, I heard a sermon by (Grace Community Church Pastor) Dave Rodriguez where I learned I was ‘made for more,’” she said.

“That message, combined with the inspirational messages I heard at the congress, inspired me to make a change.”

Deldar founded World Smiles Mission in July. In October, it became an official nonprofit and tax-exempt organization. That same month, five board members were added, and in November World Smiles Mission also became a club at Carmel High School.

World Smiles Mission targets Third-World nations such as Guatemala, Uganda and Malawi that don’t have regular access to oral care tools. The organization sent its first shipment of dental supplies to Malawi in September and is working on logistics for a shipment to Uganda. It plans to send a shipment to Guatemala in March 2019.

“Poor oral health can lead to gum disease, heart disease, lung disease and increase maternal mortality rates. Additionally, the fact so many families have to share toothbrushes or twigs allows for many infectious diseases to spread among family members,” Deldar said. “When everyone has their own toothbrush, the risk of these are

all significantly reduced. Toothbrushes can not only provide tremendous physical benefits but also many emotional benefits as well. We may not think a simple toothbrush means much, but for many, it means the world.”

Deldar, who plans to become a pediatric orthodontist, hopes World Smiles Mission will become a “leading and developed nonprofit organization that can revolutionize oral care habits around the world.”

“I hope to establish a culture of oral care in which citizens of these countries have consistent access to tools that will ensure good oral health,” she said.

Needed supplies include toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss and dental equipment. Donations can be dropped off at Deldar and Deldar Dental, 14753 Hazel Dell Crossing, Suite 700 in Noblesville.

“Additionally, I am looking for anyone who has any experience in nonprofit work, connections with organizations that can help, connections to people who can help us with transportation, distribution or international relations,” Deldar said.

Westfield resident shares Sugar Plum role in Ballet Theatre of Carmel’s ‘Nutcracker’

“I am honored to dance the DANCE role of Sugar Plum. It is physically demanding and very exciting to be dancing such a historically relevant piece to music everyone loves,” the Westfield resident said. “Being cast in this role pushes me to work harder than ever and it is good to have an amazing partner like Gabe (Gabriel Weiner) to perform with.”

The Ballet Theatre of Carmel Academy will perform “The Nutcracker” at 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 15 and 2 p.m. Dec. 16 at Carmel High School’s Dale E. Graham Auditorium.

“We’ve double-cast all of our lead roles since we have so many talented performers,” Ballet Theatre of Carmel Artistic Director Jane Hachiya-Weiner said. “It’s a nice situation to be in. We have doublecast a few roles, but I don’t believe we have ever double-cast our Sugar Plum Fairy before. We’re pretty pleased.”

Anya Stephenson, Carmel, will play Clara in the Dec. 15 show with Emmanuelle Hendrickson, from Kirklin, playing the Sugar Plum. Heinemeyer will play the Sugar Plum Dec. 16 and Miriam Danek, 11, Indianapolis, plays Clara.

Heinemeyer, a 16-year-old homeschooled sophomore, said the challenge is trying to make the role her own.

“I’ve always loved it,” Heinemeyer said.

“The music is very nostalgic to me.”

Heinemeyer enjoys the training.

“But my favorite part is performing,” said Heinemeyer, who is in her fifth performance with Ballet Theatre of Carmel.

Heinemeyer played Odette in “Swan Lake” in the spring.

“I’ve danced since I was 3, mostly ballet but I did some tap,” said Heinemeyer, who trained at a school in Paris for two weeks.

Stephenson, who turns 11 in January, said she is excited to play Clara because it will be her first solo.

party scene, but I’m still really nervous,” she said. “I didn’t think I would get (the Clara role), but I did want it.”

Stephenson, a West Clay Elementary fifth-grader, and her family moved to Carmel from Livermore, Calif., before the school year. She previously trained at the Livermore School of Dance for five years.

“I find that even non-dancing families are excited about putting the holiday ballet as part of their holiday rituals,” Hachiya-Weiner said. “We try to keep our ‘Nutcracker’ not deviating from the traditions. It just needs to be a heart-warming, full story and we don’t delve too much into the innovative or creative but want to keep it as a warm, touching story for the American family.”

Gabriel Weiner, Indianapolis, is playing

the prince for the second time. He also played the role in productions in Lansing, Mich. and Lafayette.

“The more times you do it, the more you see how deep it is and different aspects of the role you need to work on,” he said.

“It’s different every single time.”

Hendrickson is playing Sugar Plum for the second year in a row.

“Hopefully, this year it will be a lot more fluid,” she said. “It won’t be easier, but lots more to work on and make it smooth.”

Danek said she didn’t expect to be cast as Clara, but it’s her favorite role. Learning new steps is her biggest challenge, she said.

ICC holds holiday concerts

“I love the holidays,” said Best, also a member of a school choir. “It can be really stressful, but it’s really fun. There are some songs Best that are really fun to do. A lot of the songs are really upbeat.”

ICC advance choirs will be featured in “Angels Sing” at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

In addition, ICC younger choir members also will be featured in “Celebrate the Season” at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and “Sounds of the Season” at 3 p.m. Dec. 15 at ICC. “The theme is around ‘A Christmas Carol.’

The audience looks forward to hearing the story about Scrooge,” ICC Artistic Director Joshua Pedde said. “It’s told with new music added into that story. It will be a unique telling of ‘A Christmas Carol.’”

Pedde, a Carmel resident, said the choir

members enjoy it.

“It’s a familiar story, but the way we are looking at things and the music we picked to reflect on the story is really meaningful,” Pedde said. “We are doing some very traditional pieces that everyone will know.”

There are some new pieces Pedde said he hopes the audience will enjoy just as much.

Myers The choir has approximately 175 choir members from Hamilton County.

“Everyone will be part of the holiday concerts,” Pedde said. “Our advance choirs are in three shows. Kids are enjoying the diverse repertoire.”

Creekside Middle School seventh-grader Brianna Myers, a member of ICC Bel Canto choir, joined ICC more than two years ago after the family moved from Napeville, Ill., to Carmel.

“I like the community and how diverse the people I work with are,” Myers said.

“I like how everyone is passionate about music.”

Investing in the arts pays off Commentary by Jeffrey McDermott Carmel’s investment in the arts has been significant, and for good reason: It pays.

Some of the intangible SPOTLIGHT benefits of arts investment are obvious – wonderful entertainment options, beautiful venues and growth in community pride. Other intangible returns may be less apparent but no less real.

Studies consistently show that children that are involved in the arts perform better on standardized testing; enjoy greater self-esteem, enhanced creativity and higher graduation rates; and are more likely to attend and be successful in college. Elderly citizens suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia benefit greatly from music therapy. Participation as an artist, patron or student promotes community cohesion and personal psychological wellbeing. “Arts communities” are more inclusive and diverse in nearly every way.

But what about the more tangible benefits of the arts? Research shows that arts investment simply makes financial sense.

A 2017 study by Americans for the Arts re-

vealed that the nonprofit arts industry in Carmel generated more than $19.5 million in annual economic activity, including more than $12.5 million spent by our various arts organizations and an additional $7 million in event-related spending by audiences.

Arts organizations in Carmel support the equivalent of 653 full-time jobs, generating $11.6 million in household income and $1.9 million in local and state tax revenue. The average person attending an arts-related event in Carmel will spend $26.39 beyond the price of admission on meals and other goods and services. A non-Carmel resident spends even more – $42.26 on top of the ticket expense. Indeed, 62.9 percent of nonresident attendees come to Carmel specifically to attend a particular arts or cultural event, filling our hotels, restaurants and shops during their visits.

So, why do we invest in the arts? The better question to ask is, “Why wouldn’t we?”

Carmel residents appear in play

Two Carmel residents are lending their skills to the Beef & Boards cast of “A Christmas Carol” during its three-week run.

THEATER Rebecca DeVries has never before performed in “A Christmas Carol” but has been taken under the wing of veterans like fellow DeVries Carmel resident Vickie Phipps, who has portrayed the Ghost of Christmas past for four years.

“New people bring out a different aspect of the show,” Phipps said. “It’s new.

It’s fresh.”

Sets and costumes are recycled from previous productions and several cast members return, so although rehearsal only lasts one week, DeVries said it’s not a huge challenge for the majority of the cast.

“For most people it’s just a refresher,” she said.

The production started Dec. 1 and runs

through Dec. 21.

DeVries has been in many Beef & Boards shows aimed at children, most recently “Rapunzel” and “Cinderella” with Phipps. DeVries enjoys working with children and serving as an acting and audition coach when she’s not on stage. One of her young students also is in the show.

Because she plays Mrs. Cratchet, DeVries works directly with the children in the cast.

Phipps “I know the story well, but I also know that everybody in the audience knows the story,” DeVries said. “You want to bring something that’s familiar, but you also want to keep it a bit fresh.”

For Phipps, the one-hour performance isn’t a huge time commitment during the holiday season, which allows her to still spend time with family.

“It just helps me get into the spirit of Christmas,” she said. “I look forward to seeing most of the same people (involved in the show) every year.”

A woman noticed me searching for a place to sit. She offered to share her space with me, and although I had never met her, we talked for 30 minutes about our respective lives and Thanksgiving plans. Kindness like that can really turn a person’s day around, and that kind of kindness thrives at The Well.

‘B’ ruined the spelling bee Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt

Does it bother anyone else that the word “subtle” has a silent “b?” Is it ironic that the word subtle means GRAMMAR GUY “understated?” The “b” in subtle is, therefore, itself, subtle. Are you with me?

We don’t spell “settle” with a b. It’s the same with settle, sidle, saddle and Seattle.

“B” isn’t in those words. So, why the “b,” subtle?

Subtle started out its life as the Latin word “subtilis,” which was an adjective describing the thin, delicate material used for producing a veil. Subtilis hopped on a boat to France and became “soutil” in Old French. “Soutil” meant thin and delicate.

Once William the Conqueror (my 29th greatgrandfather on my mom’s side) and the Normans invaded England in 1066, “soutil” made the journey across the English Channel as well, becoming “sotil” in Middle English. Its meaning grew beyond physical delicacy into how we now understand subtle in an abstract way.

So, what happened? Doesn’t it make sense to drop letters that aren’t pronounced in a word?

In the 17th century, a group of nerdy Englishmen, who were known as the Latinists, started re-spelling English words to ground them in their Latin origins. Because of this, they added “b,” “I” and “p” back into words that had evolved from Latin. Sotil, therefore, got its “b” added back, and it began to be spelled “subtle.” The “b,” however, stayed silent – subtle, even.

At this same time, several other words that started as Latin words ultimately arrived into the modern English lexicon with added letters. They, too, originated in Latin, then migrated into Old French and rode the Norman wave into Middle English. These words include aisle, debt, doubt, indict, salmon, plumber and receipt.

Some words, on the other hand, didn’t lose their “b”, even though the “b” was no longer pronounced. They include “bomb” and “dumb.” So, beware of falling under the spell of an unexpected “b”—you might just get stung by it.

How a building changed a nation Commentary by Don Knebel It is not unusual for a structure to create an image for a city. The Opera House in Sydney, Australia created an image for an entire nation.

TRAVEL In 1947, England’s Eugene Goossens became conductor of Sydney’s symphony orchestra, then performing in the town hall, improbably pledging to make it among the best in the world. His ambition and need for a concert hall drew the attention of Joseph Cahill, the equally ambitious premier of New South Wales. In 1955, Cahill’s government announced an international competition to design a performing arts facility on a former island in Sydney Harbor that the indigenous Gadigal people had once used for ceremonial gatherings. The competition attracted 233 entries from 32 nations. The winning design, featuring an interlocking series of soaring curved roofs evoking the billowing sails of harbor boats, was submitted by 38-year-old Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who had never been to Sydney and had never designed anything approaching the scale

of his proposal. When construction began in 1959, completion was expected to require four years and $7 million. However, it soon became clear that no one at the time knew how to construct the unsupported sail roofs that Utzon demanded. Engineers eventually found a clever solution and the building was completed in 1973 at a cost of more than $100 million. By that time, Utzon had left Sydney because of controversies surrounding his design, never to return.

The Sydney Opera House is now widely acclaimed as perhaps the best example of modern architecture in the world, drawing on its surroundings and calling attention to Australia as a place of sophisticated innovation. In 2007, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site and today attracts more than 8 million visitors a year, more than 1 million of whom attend 1,500 performances on its six stages.
