CHS season ends at state

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School senior defensive end Beau Robbins likely will dwell for a while on the disappointment followFOOTBALL ing his team’s 27-7 loss to Warren Central Nov. 23 in the Class 6A state championship game.

However, the journey to Lucas Oil Stadium was even more unforgettable.

“I think I’ll always look back at this as one of the best times of my life,” said Robbins, who was a starter on the Greyhounds’ Class 6A state championship team in 2016.

“I’m so grateful to play for such a great program and so many great coaches. I love all my teammates to death. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but I’m very grateful for the experience.”

The 6-foot-4 Robbins, who has committed play for Indiana University next season, was named the Class 6A Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award winner.

“The only thing on my mind is we didn’t get the job done,” Robbins said. “It’s a great honor and I’m very honored to receive it.”

A three-year starter, Robbins, who has a 3.8 GPA, led the Greyhounds in tackles (67) and tackles for loss (17).

A large contingent of CHS football fans helped fill approximately half of the lower section as the Greyhounds took on their Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rival. The Warriors won the regular season meeting 41-17. The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, finished 14-0. The No. 3 Greyhounds finished 11-3.

CHS Coach John Hebert said prior to the state final that this was the best CHS defense he has seen.

“We’re not used to not being able to get (opponents’ offenses) off the field, and that happened (against Warren),” Hebert said.

Parents accuse CCS of causing despair that led to son’s suicide

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The parents of a Carmel High School junior who committed suicide two years ago are suing Carmel Clay LAWSUIT Schools and several other defendants in federal court for actions they believe led to their son’s death.

Patrick McCalley, 17, fatally shot himself soon after arriving home from school on Oct. 6, 2016. The lawsuit states that Patrick was an “outstanding student,” a school band member and was looking forward to serving in the U.S. Air Force, but the torment he suffered at CHS that day led him to take his life.

Earlier in the day he had been called to the principal’s office, the lawsuit states, where Assistant Principal Toby Steele and school resource officer Phil Hobson questioned him about two “racially inappropriate Snapchat messages” that he admitted sending to a friend.

The lawsuit states that Steele and Hobson used psychological intimidation and shame to coerce Patrick to write a statement acknowledging that he had committed unlawful acts of repeated bullying. It states he was left in isolation for hours without an advocate or notification of his rights.

“The defendants … interrogated Patrick in such a manner and with the specific intent to cause Patrick extreme and excessive psychological distress, shame and fear and coerced him to speak and/or do what they said,” the lawsuit states. “Patrick was a 17-year-old boy confronted by one or more powerful adults and alone in a closed room and was no match for their inquisition

tactics.”

The lawsuit states that after being told he would be expelled or suspended from school, the defendants — who could see that Patrick was extremely distressed — escorted Patrick out of the building and instructed him to leave school property.

Patrick drove home and shot himself shortly before other family members arrived. He died from the gunshot wound later in the day.

“When Patrick awoke on October 6, 2016, he was a happy, well-adjusted boy with a bright future,” the lawsuit states. “Defendants took the minor plaintiff alone into a room and continually shamed, badgered and belittled him until they had completely broken his spirit and caused him to suffer from a state of total despair resulting in death.”

Carmel Clay Schools released a statement refuting details of the lawsuit.

“The facts we have gathered in reviewing this tragedy are very different from what is being portrayed in the lawsuit,” it states.

“We will follow the legal process to appropriately respond to these accusations. We are fortunate to have tremendous leadership focused on providing a safe learning environment for all of our students at Carmel Clay Schools. We will continue to remain respectful of the privacy of all touched by this tragedy.”

A spokesman for the City of Carmel, which is named as a defendant in the case because it employs Hobson, declined to comment on pending litigation.

The eight-count lawsuit accuses the defendants of due process violations, willful and wonton conduct, negligence, infliction of emotional distress and more. It requests a jury hear the case and award damages,

Black ice leads to 30-car wreck

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Black ice caused a 30-vehicle crash on the 96th Street bridge over the White River on the Carmel/Fishers TRAFFIC border at 6:49 a.m. Nov. 29.

Four people were transported to area hospitals with non-lifethreatening injuries. Seventeen vehicles were towed by seven different towing agencies. The crash occurred in the westbound lane, resulting in a 2 1/2 hour closure as emergency responders worked to clear the scene.

Carmel Clay Schools provided a bus for drivers to sit in until alternate transporta-

tion arrived.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was the lead police agency and was assisted

by Carmel Police Dept. and Fishers Police Dept. Fishers and Carmel fire departments responded to treat injuries and manage fluids from damaged vehicles. No fluids affected the White River.

Traffic resumed on 96th Street in both directions at approximately 9:35 a.m.

The Fishers Fire Dept. issued a press release stating bridges typically are the first to experience ice build-up due to the cooling of the roadway. FFD is encouraging drivers to leave extra space between cars and drive at slower speeds.

CONSTRUCTION Range Line Road is closed to southbound traffic between Eighth Street to just south of Clay Terrace for installation of a stormwater collection system and pedestrian connectivity. The northbound lane is open.

The project is expected to reopen to twoway traffic by the end of the year, weather permitting.

Lane restrictions are under way near Keystone Parkway and 96th Street, where a new roundabout interchange is under construction. Work is expected to last through 2019.

West 96th Street is closed west of Ditch Road for a stormwater culvert project. This project will last through the end of the year.

Construction of the new flyover to connect 146th Street to southbound Keystone Parkway is ongoing. Lane closures are active on Keystone Parkway and construction is expected to last through 2019.

By Chris Bavender new@currentincarmel.com A home built in the 1880s in central Carmel soon could be demolished, joining more than a dozen others identified CHPC as historic resources to be torn down since 2014.

The prospective buyers of the Craftsman/ Bungalow design home at 241 1st Ave. SE, who haven’t been identified because the sale is pending, told the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission that they intend to replace the house with a larger one similar in appearance.

But because the structure has been identified as a historic resource in the 2014 Carmel and Clay Township Historic Properties Survey, it’s subject to a 60-day delay in demolition per city ordinance. The delay allows the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission time for a more detailed review of the request and to seek alternatives.

“The City of Carmel Dept. of Community Services performed a building survey separate from the Historic Architecture Survey.

The DOCS survey identified many buildings of aesthetic or historic character that were deemed to be worthy of consideration for preserving within the fabric of the city,” said Nick Davis, CHPC member. “Under the City of Carmel’s zoning ordinance, and specifically the chapter concerning the Old Town Zoning Overlay, ‘No Character Building, or any part of it, may be demolished in this overlay without the consent of the director of the Dept. of Community Services.’ The ordinance enumerates the reasons the director may consider when determining whether a character building may be demolished.”

would be nearly $1.17 million.

There also has been talk of moving the home.

“Although keeping a home in its original setting is the ultimate goal, we do realize sometimes that’s not possible. An alternative to demolition is the relocation of a home to a different site,” Davis said. “The home can be moved once the current owner grants ownership of the home to another party. It’s our hope that ownership is granted free of charge.”

Davis said if that were to happen, the new owners would be responsible for moving costs and acquiring suitable land to place the home. The home could be relocated because it is only 1 1/2 stories and would not adversely affect the Arts & Design District archways and overhead power lines.

The commission passed a preliminary resolution that if and when demolition permit applications are submitted to the city, the commission won’t seek to acquire and move the house through its own budget but will assist the prospective buyers in searching for a suitable new site and interested party to move and rehabilitate the house.

Once the new owners file for demolition permits, it will initiate official DOCS involvement in determining possible outcomes for the house, according to the commission.

John Griffith of Kalamazoo, Mich., has been playing wind instruments since he was 10 years old. He began FESTIVAL with the trumpet and later graduated to the euphonium before discovering the alphorn in 2002, when he and his wife, Christine, founded a traditional German band, Ein Prosit.

Griffith, 78, quickly fell in love with the unique instrument.

“My wife demanded that I have an alphorn,” Griffith said. “She’s a piccolo player.”

In 2007, Griffith took his wife’s advice and bought an alphorn. In 2009, he organized the first Midwest Alphorn Retreat, an annual event which brings alphorn players together for four days of what Griffith describes as “total immersion” in the alphorn. Dr. Peggy DeMers, of Sam Houston State University, is the retreat’s main instructor.

“I just had an idle idea to get alphorns together,” Griffith said.

Now, the Midwest Alphorn Retreat tours the nation, playing venues from museums to breweries. For the past two years, it has delighted guests at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt, giving performances throughout

Approximately 15 alphorn musicians regularly play with the group. Seven performed Nov. 17 in Carmel on the Christkindlmarkt’s opening day.

For Griffith, performing is all about staying true to the sentiment he shares with his wife (music for life; for life music) and spreading interest and love for the alphorn “The alphorn is an instrument that has

never been used to call men to arms. It’s an instrument of peace,” he said. “It’s been around for thousands of years and there are many myths about how the alphorn came to be. When you play the alphorn outdoors, you play out, the sound caresses through the trees, and then nature gives it back, with a slight echo. You just fall in love with the alphorn, truly.”

Singing Scouts make impact

By Jasmine Hsu • news@currentincarmel.com When Carmel High School students Sarah Warf and Sierra Hunnicutt and Carmel Middle School student SILVER AWARD Audrey Cox began working on their service project for their Girl Scout Silver Award, they had no idea that their finished product would end up reaching a national audience.

Warf, Hunnicutt and Cox spent hours performing, editing and uploading popular Girl Scout camp songs onto their YouTube channel, Singing Scouts. Along with posting songs, they also created a printable songbook linked to their channel, encouraging viewers to sing along.

“Sarah’s strength was the song leading and creating the YouTube channel. Audrey was excellent with the movie-making portion. Sierra typed out lyrics and helped market the page to non-Girl Scout entities for help with song-leading portions of their jobs,” said Jennifer Warf, Sarah’s mother.

The channel has built up a steady subscriber base and has gained admiration from organizations across the nation.

“I sent emails with the link to our YouTube channel to camps all across America,”

Sarah Warf said. “I think having that online access does allow us to connect with a lot more people.”

Girl Scout troops from Florida, Hawaii, Ohio and Texas have replied with promises of implementing the channel and songbook into their programs. The Girl Scouts of Greater New York have featured the channel on its Facebook page.

“My friends and I really enjoy making these type of performances for kids so it can hopefully help them,” Hunnicutt said.

With the holidays approaching, community food pantries such as Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank rely on the generosity of local donors to meet GIVING BACK heightened demand.

This year, as in years past, the organization has been able to count on faithful partners: Carmel Elementary School students.

“This will be the 10th year that Harvest Food Bank has worked with Carmel Elementary. The teachers, students and staff have collected 48,982 pounds of food. This is equivalent to 40,818 meals that one school has helped to provide for families and children in Hamilton County,” said Anita Hagen, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank executive director.

Each year, teachers create fun ways to encourage students to donate.

“Our leadership team presents facts and reminders every day during announcements. Writing canned-food theme song parodies has even been a hit during music class,” first-grade teacher Kristen Nilo said.

They feel it’s their duty to advertise and encourage others to participate,” Nilo said. “I haven’t forgotten a couple years ago when a few fourth- and fifth-grade girls were already determined to step up the food drive at their future middle school.”

Qatar visit precedes World Cup

TRAVEL “Qatar was looking for grassroots ambassadors, so I was able to be selected as one of the ambassadors to go on this unique trip,” Beuc said.

“We got to visit lots of different ministries to learn more about how the government works, the education, their vision for the future and the World Cup soccer that they are building the infrastructure for in 2022.”

The Carmel resident, who has her own marketing company, visited Qatar for a week in October. Beuc was selected as one of 14 ambassadors by the World Affairs Council of America.

Indiana Council of World Affairs is associated with World Affairs Council of America.

Beuc is a volunteer treasurer of the Indiana council, which started in 1955.

“We got to meet with a lot of top-level people within these organizations, such as the ministry of finance,” Beuc said. “They talked about how they are diversifying their economy.”

Beuc said the group met with the team organizing World Cup soccer and coordinating the construction. They also met an advisory council for the nation, which is a constitutional monarchy.

“They wanted an outreach program. One (reason) is to grow business and encourage people to consider Qatar for their business operations,” Beuc said. “They also want to promote World Cup soccer. They want people to come.”

All of the stadiums are in close proximity, and some will have a removable tier.

“They’re going to build seven stadiums, each one with a different, unique look to pay homage to a specific theme they have chosen,” Beuc said. “When they are done

When Terri Petersen lost her husband, Garry, to sudden heart failure at age 64 in September 2016, the loss was TRAVEL profound on many levels.

“He had been my seeing-eye husband for 35 years,” said Petersen, who is legally blind. “When I lost him, I wanted to be independent and not have anyone have to take care of me.”

So the 62-year-old Carmel resident got her first guide dog in March 2017. She spent three weeks training with Josie, a 3-year-old black Labrador retriever, at Pilot Dog School in Columbus, Ohio. It was her first dog.

“She gives me so many non-verbal cues,” Petersen said. “She was taught not to bark.

If there is something in my way, she’ll stop and let me know. She’s really, really smart.

I never thought I would love an animal as much as her. We have a bond because she is so dependent on me and I’m so dependent on her. We do everything together.”

Peterson has written nearly 40 short journal reports under the title “Moonrise Reflections: My Puppy Guided Walks,” which are about her walks with Josie. She started in June.

“For example, I talk about the thunderstorms of life when we were walking and it started to rain,” Petersen said. “I started thinking about Garry and I and the thunderstorms of life we had to deal with. He had diabetes and a triple bypass. I had breast cancer twice and blindness. I wrote how when you go through the thunderstorms, it’s nice to have someone to go through it all. Just stories like that.”

Petersen previously had self-published 10 children’s books and in 2010 wrote a book called “How to Survive Breast Cancer with a Smile.” Petersen said a talking computer helps her write.

Petersen first developed breast cancer in 2006. After successful treatment, It came back 10 years later. She had a mastectomy in May 2016 and then had breast reconstructive surgery 11 days after Garry died.

Her son, Erik, 28, took her to Carmel to look at apartments, and they decided on Sophia Square in downtown Carmel in December 2016. She lives with Erik.

“He has been a great comfort and support for me,” said Petersen, who previously lived in Greenwood. “(Downtown Carmel) is perfect for me. I can take Josie for walks.

Petersen developed her blindness from ocular histoplasmosis, a respiratory disease. The environmental disease is caused by fungus from pigeon droppings. She contracted it in 1977.

“I lost most of my vision in the right eye right away and then the left eye took about eight years,” Petersen said. “At 31, I became officially legally blind. I haven’t driven since then.”

“My puppy loves her last walk in the evening. The streets are quiet except for the song of birds and the rustle of tree limbs that has my puppy perk up her ears and walk smartly. My puppy guides me and my memories into the moonrise.

“I often remember the last moment of my late husband’s life. I held his hand as he exhaled his last breath on our back deck. I prayed, “Please don’t leave me.

But if you have to, it is okay. I will always have you in my heart. I will always love you.”

“And as he exhaled his last breath, I knew God was inhaling him Home.

“As tears fill my eyes, I could feel a warm presence walking next to me. I imagine taking my late husband’s hand.

And as I walk with my puppy as the moon rises, I smile with the sweet memories of our life together on this earth.

The smell of earth, the quiet “woof” of another puppy as we pass a house and the feel of the breeze on my face, all helps me find peace. And I know that we will meet again…”

Commentary by Shelly Gattlieb You might recognize him as everyone’s favorite employee at the Kroger on Range Line Road, but what you probPROFILE ably don’t know is that Justin Graves has worked full-time at the grocery store for 13 years.

Justin always is eager to serve his customers, even when the contribution involves putting on a heavy coat to work outside during snowy winter months. He is an enthusiastic team player in the workplace, and many of the store’s regular patrons know him by name.

Although his responsibilities usually involve bagging groceries in the checkout lines or collecting and returning shopping carts from the parking lot, his favorite part of the job is getting to interact with the Kroger customers and improve their shopping experience. In addition, he loves working with so many different people.

“We make a great team,” he said.

Business owners uncertain of future at Monon Square as city leaders dream big

The owner of Carmel’s School of Rock said he knew it was only a matter of time before the aging Monon Square shopping center, which is home to his COVER STORY business and many others, would be sold for redevelopment.

“It’s not hard to figure out,” he said.

“When they’re building on both sides of you and closing in, eventually something was going to happen in this spot.”

The City of Carmel used $15 million in 2017 tax increment financing bonds to purchase the strip mall at the northwest McFarland corner of Range Line Road and City Center Drive from the Lawhead family, which did not respond to a request for comment. Built primarily in the 1970s, the city has big plans for the strip mall on 8.7 acres, including mixed-use buildings of up to five stories and a parking garage that can be retrofitted if autonomous cars become popular in the not-too-distant future.

The city expects to create a master plan for the site and then select developers to create projects that fit into the

vision, much like it did with the purchase of 88 acres to develop City Center near the turn of the century. But for now, it has hired Mohawk Management to handle Monon Square’s operations.

Monon Square tenants have been told it may be years before the existing buildings are demolished, and the city is hoping many of the existing businesses will be a good fit for the new development.

But for McFarland, the sale has led to more questions than answers.

“We’re keeping our eyes open (for another spot),” McFarland said. “One thing business owners don’t like is uncertainty.”

Seeking solutions

In 2014, city leaders presented their vision for the Midtown area to connect the Arts & Design District and City Center, and the plan is coming to fruition all around Monon Square with the transformation of Range Line Road to the east, expansion of the Monon Trail to the west and several new buildings under construction nearby.

Although the purchase announcement may have not been a surprise, Monon Square business owners are now forced to take a look at what it means for their future. Eldon

Chuck, who opened Jamaican Reggae Grill in the shopping center in April 2015, said he hopes he can stay in the new building but isn’t sure he’ll be able to afford it.

“We’d have to take a look at (the math), but we’re established at this location now and the clientele are just getting used to us being here,” he said. “We’d do whatever it takes to stay here.”

Chuck Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the city is brainstorming ways to support the existing businesses through the transition. He said the future developer could build in a reduced rent structure for existing clients, at least temporarily.

“That’s a double-edged sword because you don’t want to favor those businesses over another entrepreneur that might have to come in and try to compete with much higher rents,” he said. “I think the compromise is (a rent structure) for a period of time.”

Another option could be designing some of the retail spaces to be much smaller than those offered now. Brainard said most retail spaces are on standardized pads of Continued on Page 23

2,000 to 5,000 square feet, which is much more space than some businesses need.

By cutting the spaces down to 300 to 600 square feet and moving restroom facilities to a shared space, some of the existing tenants may be more likely to stay, he said.

Chuck said that solution might be a good fit for his restaurant.

“It’s out-of-the-box thinking, and it could work,” he said.

But for McFarland, whose 3,000-squarefoot facility is already at capacity during the school’s busiest times, downsizing isn’t an option.

“It doesn’t help me,” he said.

‘Interesting places’

Although it may be years before Monon Square is rebuilt, Brainard’s vision for the area includes expanding Veterans Way through the property to reduce traffic on

Range Line Road and building a parking structure wrapped with other types of development to hide it.

He also plans to include a public plaza along the Monon Trail, similar in atmosphere to the one there today near Union Brewing Co.. The city wants to create unique sights and stops all along the Monon from the Monon Community Center to the Arts & Design District and beyond.

“The idea is to have a series of interesting places for people,” Brainard said.

Chuck said he’s generally supportive of the city’s vision for Monon Square and redevelopment in general, but he’s hoping those plans will include his business.

“I’m excited about the direction the city is moving,” he said. “I’m a resident of the city, so I’d like to see it move in a positive direction, but from a business owner’s standpoint I’m hoping there’s some creative way we can work it out so we can exist within the change.”

LETTER More studies needed on effects of marijuana

Commentary by Terry Anker After the second bottle of wine, the dinner conversation turned to the state of cultural affairs. The friends gathered shared reading lists and recent museum visits.

One mentioned the retinue of movies in theaters. Almost instinctively, there was a quick dismissal of the latest Marvel characters as undeserving of thoughtful discussion among full-grown adults. Is film a worthy element in a serious review of our culture?

If American cinema is deemed significant (at least occasionally), then shouldn’t all well-educated and engaged citizens have a canon of required viewing? What might make the cut? Not surprisingly, internet list makers cling to vastly different perspectives on art and value. Likewise, each of us boasts favorites – tied to our own times and places, laughs and tears.

Some would be popular, marquee blockbusters. The docket would include thrillers, dramas, comedies and even the odd horror film. Many must be small and independent.

A few could be quirky enough to stand alone in their own categories.

The list would be revisited in conversations with new players, reinforcing the previous choices and adding some that had been wrongly overlooked.

For a decade or so, our family has woven this list between recent releases and small-festival winners.

Recently, we screened the 1959 version of “Ben Hur” and then its 2016 remake. After considerable family discourse, requiring a second piece of pecan pie, 1959 won big.

If we thought a bit, in advance, about what films are worthy, and shared them with those we love, wouldn’t we come to know each other better?

Keeping it (awesomely) real Commentary by Danielle Wilson Here we go again, people. I received a voicemail from a disgruntled reader who couldn’t get through via email.

HUMOR While I applaud her perseverance, I feel the need to address her comments publicly in case anyone else out there shares similar views, and also because they’re a hoot! Happy holidays!

“Danielle Wilson is the most unorganized, pitiful mother in the world.” Granted, I have dropped the parenting ball (and the f-bomb) a few times of late. I work. I have teenagers.

Debit cards will occasionally disappear. It happens. As for pitiful, I’d argue that “normal” would be a better word choice. I don’t always love being a mom. I sometimes don’t like my offspring. Those who say differently are either living in denial or in Stepford.

“Her kids are out of control.” They’re really not. It’s true that none of them will be receiving academic or athletic scholarships and they are sporadically lazy and selfish. They

also spend more time on their phones than is admittedly healthy. But they have kind hearts and are funny and probably won’t end up incarcerated. I’m sorry if everyone doesn’t have a good relationship with their children, but attacking mine certainly won’t help.

“She should be ashamed and embarrassed.” For what? For writing about the ups-and-downs of life? For being honest and transparent and not peddling the “I’m perfect” lie? I pride myself on keeping it real, on sharing both the good and the bad of motherhood. Which is why I somewhat agree with the last accusation.

“Her ego is off the charts.” I do think I’m awesome. Especially when strangers insult me.

Editor, It was with great sadness that I read Ann Marie Shambaugh’s story on Nov. 20. No one should have to suffer as Carmel City Councilor Ron Carter and his family have.

However, a man’s grief is no excuse to peddle disinformation. The councilor somehow blames the deaths his family has experienced on marijuana. The research on marijuana being a gateway drug is inconclusive at best.

At the same time, more and more scientific studies are showing the potential that marijuana and cannabis extracts have the potential to reduce opioid addiction, along with a number of other medical conditions.

However, as long as the federal government keeps marijuana listed as a Schedule I drug, it cannot be legally studied in the U.S. I suppose we will have to look to our saner neighbors to the north: Canada recently legalized marijuana, which means scientists will be able to perform rigorous studies on its efficacy for multiple medical conditions.

I look forward to their research. And I look forward to the councilor’s cessation of spreading misinformation. We already have a president to do that.

Having just moved, I have spent a lot of sleepless nights worrying about whether I’d receive my Christmas edition HUMOR of the Hammacher Schlemmer gift catalog. The best nose hair trimmer — HS says its panel of experts lauded its “smooth trimming.” How do you gather a panel like that?

The description also says that the trimmer is easier to clean with a removable head. If you have a removable head, I bet it also is easier to clean your ears.

The indoor flameless marshmallow roaster — Why camp out? Why sleep in a tent? Why get eaten by mosquitoes when you can roast your marshmallows in your living room over an electric heater? It’s totally safe for kids and it teaches them that it’s a lot easier to camp inside — near a fridge and a toilet.

Automatic flameless candle — Our friends the Murphys gave us a version of this as a housewarming gift. Of course, it

doesn’t warm the house. It doesn’t even warm your finger because it’s not a real flame — just LED lights. It comes with a tiny remote for you to program how long and how fast the flame flickers. You can even incorporate a blowout feature, so you can quickly get back to your indoor marshmallow roasting.

Best heated car seat — Many things in the HS catalog are heated one way or another: socks, gloves, hats, bathrobes. Why not heat your car seat with a special pad?

Actually, my new car came equipped with heated seats and I didn’t realize it. I knew I felt something weird.

Seated whole-body pedaler — This is an exercise machine that you put in front of your favorite easy chair and then pedal while you watch TV. HS claims it gives you a full cardio workout and tones triceps, quadriceps and biceps, ’cep there’s one problem: It doesn’t work when you fall asleep. Which you will.

ER, urgent care center planned

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Riverview Health is proposing a new emergency and urgent care medical facility on the southeast corner RIVERVIEW of Hazel Dell Parkway and 146th Street in Carmel.

The 11,500-square-foot building is planned on approximately 2 acres adjacent to an existing Riverview medical campus. Riverview plans to spend $8 million to demolish a vacant building that once housed Fifth Third Bank and construct a new facility to complement the existing medical buildings.

The facility will offer emergency room and urgent care services from board-certified ER-trained physicians. Emergency room care will be available 24/7, with urgent care

services offered from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Planning documents filed with the City of Carmel state that the medical facility will serve adults and children, treating everything from sore throats and high fevers to chest pain and other life-threatening conditions.

The proposed facility will have a radiology suite, digital X-ray machine and testequipped laboratory. If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2019 with an opening date in 2020.

Riverview recently started construction on a similar medical facility in Fishers and has plans to construct others in west Carmel and Nora.

The Carmel Plan Commission’s commercial committee is set to review site and building designs at its Dec. 4 meeting, set for 6 p.m. at Carmel City Hall.

So in 2006, she opened Out of the Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts in Monticello, Ill. She decided to open her second store in Carmel City Center. The store opened Sept.

19 at 727 Hanover Place, Suite 149. An official ribbon cutting was held Oct. 30.

“There isn’t a shop devoted to Polish pottery in the Indianapolis area,” Burgard said.

“I thought it would be a good spot to expand to. I had been thinking about expanding for a while. I fell in love with Carmel and it seemed to be such a nice area and dedicated to design.”

Burgard has an apartment in Carmel and is traveling between the two stores but spends most of her time in Carmel.

to Boleslawiec each year to view what is new in the pottery factories. Artisans hand paint each piece using a sponge stamping technique that can take up to three hours.

All of the pottery is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe.

Burgard has a booth at Carmel’s Christkindlmarkt. It features ornaments and Christmas patterns on pottery pieces.

The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Burgard said she expects to extend the hours around the holidays.

Business owners don’t need a computer science degree or coding certification to protect themselves and their data. However, they are responsible for taking the necessary steps to secure company assets and information from prying eyes.

Family invents mailbox alert

By Chris Bavender news@currentincarmel.com A teenager tired of repeatedly checking the mailbox every day was the driving force behind a product that NEW PRODUCT alerts homeowners to activity at the mailbox now being marketed by a Carmel family.

“Smart Alert for Mail, or SAM, was originated by my 16-year-old sister, Selam, who came up with it for a school project. She was 14 at the time. She was getting tired of having to run back and forth to the mailbox every day and was pushing the task on my brother, Sam,” said Alex Waclawik, product manager for SAM. “With the help of my inventor and entrepreneur dad, she made the very first prototype.”

After more than a year of hardware and software development, SAM (named after youngest brother, Sam) is ready to start shipping this month.

“We used SAM for a few months before deciding on making it into a product. We found out that although there were other mailbox alert systems on the market, none of them had cloud and smartphone integration for receiving alerts,” Waclawik said.

“That’s when we decided to pursue SAM as a product. We also did a lot of testing, especially for range, battery life and lowtemperature performance.”

The development of SAM was partially aimed at reducing mail and package thefts.

“The original SAM prototype was just a simple receiver and transmitter, which made an audible alert in the home when mailbox activity occurred. Once we began developing the device, we realized the potential of not only mailbox notification, but also the ability to monitor potential

package thefts,” Waclawik said. “With that, we proceeded to integrate SAM with the internet and cloud computing. Users are able to receive mail notifications on their smartphone anywhere they have a cellular connection and can keep a log of the date and time of past mailbox activity for up to three months.”

Waclawik, 18, has taken over as product manager, while dad, Bart, has stepped back to his “regular” job of running two other Carmel-based businesses. As for Selam, although she enjoyed the creativity of inventing a new product, Alex said she’s not as interested in the business side.

“My sister really likes science and invention aspects, and she helped with the design and look and feel of the device and also worked with my dad on the notification sounds selection that are included with SAM, but now she is busy with school. She’s a sophomore at Carmel High School and studying as she wants to go to college to work in the medical field,” he said.

SAM retails for $59 and is available at mailalert.us for pre-order. The app is free and can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store. There are no subscription costs for smartphone notifications.

Mathias returns in title role in ‘Mary Poppins’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com For Devan Mathias, the stage production of “Mary Poppins” is the perfect combination of the book and the MUSICAL movie about the magical nanny.

“In the book, she is a lot more stern with the children and has a wicked sense of humor,” Mathias said. “This production marries those well.”

Mathias, a Fishers resident who helps direct Hamilton Southeastern High School shows with her husband, Ethan, played the title role in Civic Theatre’s 2015 production of “Mary Poppins.” Indianapolis resident Jeremy Shivers-Brimm returns as Bert in Civic Theatre’s production of “Mary Poppins,” which runs from Dec. 7 to Dec. 29 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I really wanted to do this show because it meant a lot to me the first time,” said Mathias, who again plays the title role. “I just want to breathe new life into ‘Mary Poppins.’ It’s such a great role. There are so many great things. You get to fall in love with the family and it breaks your heart when you leave them. There’s so much comedy. It’s vocally challenging.

‘Mary Poppins’ is all about the non-verbal cues. She’s quite the cheeky character, so it’s all in the wink of an eye or a nod or a chortle.”

Shivers-Brimm enjoys playing the role of Bert as a lovable rascal.

“In director Anne Beck’s vision, he is a guardian angel for the kids,” ShiversBrimm said. “In working with Devan last time, we developed a nice relationship that isn’t romantic and isn’t a friendship, it’s just a magical relationship between the two characters. I just like to find that three years later in a different way. I think (Mary and Bert) have so much respect and care for each other and they’re kind of partners-in-crime in teaching lessons in people that need the help the most.”

the ones in the movie. The choreography is harder than some other stuff I’ve had to do. Then memorizing lines. This is the biggest role I’ve played in a real theater.”

Ben Kistner, a sixth-grader at Zionsville West Middle School, plays Michael Banks.

“I think it’s cool to be bratty, honestly,” Kistner said.

The biggest challenges Kistner said are “lines and blocking because it’s a really long show.”

Kistner, who previously performed in “James and the Giant Peach” at Jr. Civic, started acting at age 9. He also has performed in Christian Youth Theater and one school production.

“I think it’s cool to play different parts and be a versatile actor in front of other people,” he said.

“I get to scare (Ben) and come to life, which will be very fun,” Jennie said. “It’s fun to be on stage with him and not be his

mom, just be a member of the cast with him. It’s been a good bonding experience for the two of us. It’s been great to see him get such great direction, especially in a show with mostly all adults. He’s mostly acted with all kids. It’s nice to sit back and not worry about him. He’s getting good direction and he’s having a great time.”

Jennie said her son loves acting, singing and dancing but really loves composing.

“When he’s not in theater, we’re trying to pry him away from the piano,” she said.

“It’s a great role in the sense that it tells the story of families,” Koharchik said.

“For adults, it’s a good reminder that kids need our attention and to focus on what really matters in a family.”

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir will perform with guest vocalist Sarah Pedde Kate Waltson, a soprano from Richmond, Va., at the IU Health Holidays Pops concert. The performances are at 3 and 7 p.m. Dec. 8.

“We are doing five different pieces with Carmel Symphony,” Pedde said. “It’s always great whenever you get to perform in the Palladium, and Carmel Symphony is a wonderful group of musicians. To be able to share our holiday music with another group of audiences is a fabulous thing to do during the holiday season. We are happy to have been asked and able to be part of it.”

When the menu notes that a side of “cool-down sauce” comes with your spicy burger, I worried that instead of being flavorful hot, the burger would be hurtful hot.

I was wrong, and Scotty’s nailed this entrée. It’s not too hot, despite the mo’fo’ hot sauce and fresh green jalapenos layered on top of the burger patty and Pepper Jack cheese. The burger was hot enough to get my mouth watering in that it-hurts-so-good way. The cool-down sauce is Scotty’s play on ranch. It paired great with the burger

and side of waffle fries I tried.

Scotty’s Brewhouse also has restaurants in Carmel and Noblesville and the north side of Indy for you local folks, but the downtown location is the perfect spot to hit before or after a Colts or Pacers game.

The restaurant is just a few minutes from Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse, making it an easy walk. Be mindful of potentially large crowds on game days.

Add extra time, but other than the busyness, Scotty’s has an excellent game-day atmosphere.

Suggested pairings: Normally, I don’t order domestic beers, but since I was eating at Scotty’s before the Colts game, I felt like I needed to order the official beer of the NFL, so I chose a Bud Light (“Dilly Dilly!”)

Scotty’s also taps craft beers from its sister company, Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co., so if you like craft beer, try the Rocky Ripple pale ale, or my favorite, the Two Lucys Blackberry Wheat, for a fruitier taste.

Lights at Brickyard in 3rd year

By Mark Johnson editorial@youarecurrent.com For more than 100 years, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has prided itself as the home of the “greatest spectacle EVENT in racing.” Since 1911, IMS has brought energy and excitement to the month of May in Indianapolis and transformed Memorial Day weekends into a virtual Hoosier holiday.

Now, more than a century later, the IMS has entered a new era of fun and spectacle.

The Lights at the Brickyard has introduced Christmas holiday magic with an Indy 500 flavor.

This drive-thru holiday experience, which is now in its third year, features displays on a 2-mile course that takes visitors through the infield, around the historic oval and across the Yard of Bricks start/finish line.

“Basically, we were looking back through things and at the fact that before 1994, the track was completely closed after May,” said IMS President Doug Boles, a Zionsville resident. “We wanted to find a way to utilize the track beyond May and August but maintain the family atmosphere. This was

“In our first year of Lights at the Brickyard, we had about 150,000 visitors. Half of them had never been to the track.”

This year, Boles is particularly proud of a new feature which allows visitors an outof-car experience.

“Visitors will have an opportunity to get out of their cars this year and look at the museum and have hot chocolate,” he said. “There will also be a special Santa night on Dec, 9.”

IRT presents timeless classic

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com This is the 28th time Indiana Repertory Theatre has presented “A Christmas Carol,” and its message still rings true PLAY for director Benjamin Hanna.

“The story of Ebenezer Scrooge is quite timeless,” Hanna said. “We all know someone who is struggling to connect to the community and has separated from the world. Here’s a fascinating fact about the IRT production: Almost every word that is used onstage comes directly from Charles Dickens’ novella, so when we do make changes, we always consult the original story. I think every time a new director approaches the script you see some changes because there is a new perspective guiding the production.”

This is the Indianapolis resident’s first time directing “A Christmas Carol” at IRT, which runs through Dec. 26. Last year, he assisted the director, Janet Allen, so he could spend time with the play and learn about its long history before directing it himself.

The goal was to add more functional square footage by finishing the attic space above the garage.

1. The first significant change was adding a large window to the attic space, which allowed natural light to enter the space, making the attic feel larger and giving the exterior of the home some extra curb appeal.

2. The next major change was finishing out the space by framing, insulating and adding drywall and electrical to the attic.

3. A ceiling fan and plenty of recessed lighting were added to the home office.

4. Multiple closets were added to the attic in order to give the homeowners the storage space they needed.

5. The doors and trim were selected to match the rest of the home for a cohesive design.

Background info: This home, built in 1993, is in the Springmill Ponds neighborhood of west Carmel. The owners loved the home and wanted to stay there for as long as possible, but they lacked the space they needed.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The owners often worked from home but did not want to compromise the space they already had in order to convert a room into their home office. The attic space above the garage was unfinished and underutilized, so they hoped to find a solution that involved using that space to its fullest.

I didn’t wear glasses until college, which was before I believed in North Dakota. During a lecture hall GRAMMAR GUY class, I found myself squinting to see the chalkboard at a distance. After seeing an optometrist, I realized my vision wasn’t that great. As it turns out, I’m near-sighted.

Now, I wear glasses all the time, even when viewing things up close. Mostly, it’s because I want to appear smart. Here comes the segue!

Do you know another way to look smart?

Know the difference between sight, site and cite! These three homophones trip people up all the time, just like when you walk down a flight of stairs, get to the bottom, then try to walk down one more stair that isn’t there. It’s an awkward and sometimes painful experience.

Sight can either be a noun or a verb. As a noun, it can take many definitions, most notably the ability to see, something worth seeing, or a device that aids your eye. As a verb, sight means to view, glimpse or aim at something. Those new glasses really helped my sight. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen

the sights in North Dakota. Remember, you need to have light to have sight. Sight is all about seeing something. Light = sight.

Site can also be a noun or a verb. It has everything to do with location. Site can mean the physical location or position of a building or city: Even though the movie is called “Fargo,” the site of most of the filming was in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

The town of Rugby, N.D., is the site of the geographical center of North America. When we’re talking about electronic position, site refers to websites. A website is something you go visit on the internet. Site = location.

Cite is the odd man out of these three words. Not only does it start with a different letter, but it can only be used as a verb. It means to refer to something, to summon someone to come to court, or to deliver a violation. The police officer cited me for driving 95 mph outside Bismarck, N.D. I thought speed limits weren’t a thing in North Dakota!

Beth Shemesh’s golden ‘tumors’

Commentary by Don Knebel The city of Beth Shemesh, Israel, 19 miles west of Jerusalem, was an important Israelite town during the period of the biblical judges. Originally named for the Canaanite sun goddess and lying at the border between IsraTRAVEL elite and Philistine territories, it figured in the history of the Ark of the Covenant.

According to 1 Samuel, just before the time of King David, Israelite soldiers took the Ark of the Covenant, holding the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments, into battle against the Philistines, hoping its presence would bring them victory. The plan failed. The Philistines killed 30,000 Israelites and captured the Ark, which they took to Ashdod and displayed in the temple to Dagon, their national god. That turned out to be a bad idea. The statue of Dagon soon toppled and broke. More important, the Philistines began suffering from hemorrhoids, sometimes euphemistically called “tumors,” and were overrun by mice. To rid themselves of these plagues, which they attributed to the wrath of Yahweh, the God of the Israelites, the Philistines put the Ark on a cart yoked to two milk cows. The excavated ruins of the biblical town of Beth Shemesh, including an impressive underground reservoir holding 60,000 gallons of water, lie just outside the modern city, which has a population of about 115,000. What became of the golden hemorrhoids is not known.
