And they are demanding a change of clothes, threatening to boycott the mall if the mannequins are not covered in more family-friendly apparel. “We are trying to raise our children to embrace virtues that used to be commonplace, like modesty and chastity. OUR TAKE It is our position that feedback is crucial to quality. Said another way, is one better off to stop patronizing an establishment for delivering poor product or to risk politeness and confront the establishment’s failings? We’ve all been there. A special dinner is ruined by an inattentive, perhaps even rude, server. Most often, we pay the bill (plus tip) and leave. Our recourse is to never return. While we might even share our displeasure with friends and family, we often avoid the accountable party. We Midwesterners are known for our politeness – and for our desire to avoid an unnecessary confrontation. Good. We like that about us.

But without constructive feedback, the business (and the service provider) may never acknowledge the need for improvement. The book “Crucial Confrontations” rightly concludes that what we don’t say, we act out anyway. Products and services are inevitably better where competition and demanding patrons expect more. Demeaning, humiliating criticism is never appropriate and is likely to be ignored. But if we like a local establishment, be it a burger joint or the best jeweler, we have a right and an obligation to expect the best. It’s hard to get good help. Sure. It is also hard to go out of business.

YET ANOTHER MAJOR MOVE It is our position that state Sen. Mike Delph’s work to protect Major Moves cash from his salivating colleagues at the Statehouse is on target. his Carmel representative has introduced legislation calling for a constitutional amendment to prevent the pilfering of the already created special trust account with the purpose of ensuring that the nearly $4 billion (plus interest) from the lease of the Indiana Toll Road for road projects is spent exactly that way. Sen. Delph is worried, and justifiably so, that without a constitutional amendment his legislative cohorts will re-appropriate for pork. With tax fury (fueled by several election-year surprises), the General Assembly is likely to grab for cash wherever

it might be. The lack of personal financial restraint suggested by the very need for such a “major move” doesn’t speak well of our elected body. With funds so clearly earmarked, one could argue that an amendment to the Indiana Constitution is akin to killing an ant with a sledgehammer – more than a bit excessive. But the building pressure to find other funds to replace fat property taxes without cutting government is and will continue to be fierce. In this case, a sledgehammer may be exactly what is needed… this is no ordinary ant.

SCHOOL OFFICIALS RESPOND Dr. Barbara Underwood, Superintendent of Carmel-Clay Schools, commented via e-mail: “I would rather not use portables or redistrict. However, as a school district with uneven growth, we will be required to make adjustments to serve our students well. I am opposed to using portables when we have ample space in our schools to serve our students in well-designed and equipped school buildings. Having our schools enrolled significantly unevenly results in shifting financial resources away from our primary instructional purposes.” Steve Dillon, Director of Student Services for Carmel-Clay Schools and head of the Redistricting Committee, responded in a phone call: 1. He would rather not have to redistrict or use portable classrooms, but with overcrowding in some schools and 700 open seats in others, redistricting is a valid option. 2. There are two portable classrooms currently in use at Carmel Elemen-

tary housing approximately 40 students. While they did ensure that kids could stay at the school, they have their own inherent problems. Children must leave the portable to use the restroom, eat lunch, attend P.E., art, music, Spanish, etc. 3. Portable classrooms, while they provide additional classroom space, do not provide additional space in the cafeteria or gymnasium. Children could be eating lunch as early as 9:30 a.m. 4. Having the entire Carmel community privy to the committee’s debate would be counterproductive. In other words, if all 40 “districts/neighborhoods” currently being considered for redistricting knew they were potentially going to be moved, committee members would be inundated with e-mails and phone calls and perhaps feel unable to voice their opinions at meetings. The 33 members are volunteers; they didn’t sign up to be intimidated or harassed.

According to my source, there are some areas where it makes sense to redistrict and where it would be a “long-term” solution. Steve Dillon and Dr. Underwood admit that in general though, redistricting is good for 2-3 years at best. 9. A committee of parents is still the best way to represent the community; they just need to be given the freedom to look at all possible solutions. 10. I don’t have a number 10; I just felt like the list was incomplete. Having listened to all sides of this frustrating issue, my real concern is no longer redistricting in and of itself. If the committee honestly thinks that it’s the best solution, then so be it. They are parents just like us, only with better access to pertinent

ah, I know. I thought I was done with redistricting too. I wrote a column, went to the public meeting, and had resigned myself to the fact that my kids would probably be moved to Carmel Elementary. And as a critic of mine pointed out, they will know twice as many kids by the time they get to Carmel Middle (or Creekside.) Who knows? But then an interesting thing happened. I received an e-mail from a member of the redistricting committee, one of the 33 parents charged with recommending a redistricting plan to the school board. This person, who wished to remain anonymous so as not Danielle to lose his/her spot Wilson on the committee, felt it imperative that people understand what was going on and how the redistricting process, at least this round, is operating. Suddenly I felt like Woodward and Bernstein, even though I’m not an investigative reporter or even really a journalist. I’m just a soccer mom who gets a half page a week in the local paper. But after hearing all this person had to say, I felt obligated to pass the information along. So here’s the skinny, almost straight from “Deep Throat’s” e-mail. 1. Though many members thought they were signing up for a committee to look at redistricting and other alternatives, they in fact were given only one option — redistricting. 2. Steve Dillon is doing his best, but it’s really Superintendent Barb Underwood’s show. She’s against alternative solutions like portable classrooms, so they are not even being discussed as a possible solution. 3. The committee was presented a plan on their second meeting as a starting point, which was leaked by someone from the committee. As a result, Smoky Row parents were able to organize and express their concerns en masse at the Nov. 20 meeting. 4. Other neighborhoods deserve the chance to fight possible redistricting and to offer potential alternatives. Here are several on the proposed plan: Foster Estates to Cherry Tree from Carmel Elementary, a section of Brookshire from Mohawk Trails to Woodbrook, and a large chunk of the homes in Prairie Trace’s district to Mohawk Trails. 5. The committee is in chaos due to the earlier leaks and progress has been slowed. 6. The committee’s top priority is for neighborhoods to be kept together. 7. Concerns and solutions can be sent to Steve Dillon, who will forward them to all

are going to do their best to make all Girl Scouts proud by trimming the tree to a state of jaw-dropping beauty. The tree, located in the Gunstra model, is one of 11 trees across central Indiana that Girl Scouts have agreed to decorate. The 11 trees make up the Gunstra Builder’s Favorite Christmas Tree Contest. The winner of the contest will receive $500 to help other Girl Scouts with expenses related to Scouting. All we have to do to keep the $500 in our community and support Nancy, Therese and Elaine, is go to the model home and vote for their masterpiece. At the end of the contest, each of the trees will be donated to a needy family. So, here is the way I see it. Gunstra Builders organizes a contest, shells out some cash and receives some nice publicity. The Girl Scouts do a good deed, earn credits towards their service badges, experience good, warm feelings and make the world a better place. Other needy Girl Scouts receive help to go camp or buy new uniforms. FRENCH STUDENTS EARN HONORS: Clay Middle School French students won recognition in a creative project contest sponsored by the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association. In the Morin middle school art category, sixth-grader Rhys Morin was the state winner for his pencil portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. Seventh-grader Brittany Todd won the state’s top honor in the audio/visual category for her DVD of Chopin piano selections, which she introduced in French. BAND PLAYS IN HAWAII: 130 members of Carmel High School’s marching band traveled to Hawaii over the Thanksgiving break. They collected donations for the USS Arizona monument and met two Pearl Harbor survivors. They also preformed on the USS Missouri, the ship on which the World War II peace treaty with Japan was signed, and played with the Royal Palace Band.

e did a cool thing at work last week – our own version of Midnight Madness. We made an announcement to the staff that my co-owner, Garth, and I were hosting an upcoming “work ’till midnight” event. It wasn’t mandatory – just an open invitation for people to do something different and build a little esprit de corps. As perks, anyone who signed up could wear jeans and tennis shoes the whole day. We also had dinner catered by the good folks at McAlister’s Deli. Much to our delight, 17 of our staff signed up for the event and hung in there to the end. Overall, I think everyone had a great time, and did some crazy stuff as the night wore on. At 8:30, I started to feel the effects. At 10 p.m., I needed a little pick-me-up, so I ran wind sprints through our ofﬁce – which is 50 to 60 yards long. That

certainly drew some laughs. We also tossed around a football for a while, until the ceiling tiles got hit a few too many times. Did work get done? You bet. Aside from the levity, it was a darn good effort by everyone. I made more phone calls that day than I have made in probably two years. Actually, I found it refreshing and somewhat cleansing. It’s been a long time since I worked a 16hour day, and it felt kinda good. Would I want to do it every day? No. But I could see having a version of this once a month. Perhaps every fourth Tuesday we’ll have a “work until 10 p.m. event.” Sometimes you gotta shake things up a little. Everybody needs their own version of Midnight Madness. My biggest gripe with these devices is not so much the hardware as it is the bloated software that comes with them. If you allow the installation CD to run its course, you will likely end up with so many extra processes that it will take a lot longer to start your computer and it will run slower all the way around. The software, in its default installation, is designed to allow you to click on any of the buttons on the MFP and “auto-launch” the associated software on your computer. While this may have a high “wow” factor, the trade-off in overall performance of your computer is rarely worth it. I highly recommend that you pay close attention during the installation process and watch for the “custom” installation option, which will allow you to eliminate unnecessary programs from being installed.

In Friuli, Italy, wine merchant and restaurateur Joe Bastianich allows the locals to hunt on his property, and they in exchange prepare an annual feast in his honor. A simple roasted pheasant led the menu this year. Bastianich poured what he had on hand — a magnum of Dom Perignon Rosé 1990 Champagne. Blasphemy? Epiphany is more like it. “The pairing was amazing,” says Bastianich. “As the evening wore on, the Rosé became more wine than Champagne, the Pinot Noir grape shining through.” Daniel Humm, the dynamic young chef at New York’s Eleven Madison Park, knows just how versatile Dom Perignon can be: He loves it with Swiss cheese. Specifically, cave-aged gruyere, whose nuttiness comes to life, he says, in the presence of “a more mature Champagne like Dom Perignon or Krug.” Escoffier, the august chef who once declared that red wines must be drunk with meat, Champagne with entremets and white wine with fish, must be wincing in his grave.

Lachlan MacKinnon-Patterson, the wunderkind chef behind Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder, Colo., described a fried land crab he recently enjoyed in Puerto Rico — with chilled coconut water. On a recent jaunt to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico, Mario Batali Mario Batali discovered that spicy fish tacos with a serrano chili crema worked beautifully with an Argentinian Viognier. “The pineapple fragrance of the wine tamed the chili crema,” he says, “and its lowacid acacia blossom notes brought out the lean meatiness of the local dorado.” Once a rigorous discipline, pairing has become sport, according to Michael Lomonaco, executive chef at Porter House, a posh New York steakhouse where zinfandels are emerging as the “sleeper wines” of the expansive list. When he started his career, the sommelier had all the control over diners and over cellars filled with Old World wines. That’s because his are no longer rules to live — or eat and drink — by. “The rules of pairing have changed, because the world of beverages has changed,” says Karen Page, co-author with Andrew Dornenburg, of “What to Drink with What You Eat.” “Today, when you say red wine, do you mean a light and fruity Pinot Noir? Or a big tannic Cabernet Sauvignon? Do you mean a slightly sweet sparkling Shiraz? Or a very sweet late harvest Zinfandel? They’re all red wines, but some of them would be god-awful with red meat.” As for that meat, she says, “Are we talking a two-inch-thick dry-aged steak off the grill? Or a ﬁnely chopped, delicate steak tartare? The former still calls for a red, while the latter could even be served with a white, like an off-dry Alsatian Riesling.” Today, a wine’s color doesn’t matter nearly as much as its other characteristics: Is it light or full-bodied? With “Urban Fields,” artist Gayla Hodson shows us what she’s been up to lately. The exhibition, which opens 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at Pivot Gallery in the Stutz Business Center, features acrylic and oil paintings that explore new territory for Hodson. The artist, a former art teacher who lives in Fishers, started painting full-time a few years ago and maintains Gayla Hodson a studio at the Stutz building on North Senate Avenue, Indianapolis. “Urban Fields” marks an important change in direction for Hodson, who is probably best known for large canvases of vibrantly colored ﬂoral abstracts. After painting purely organic forms for a number of years, the artist recently started recording images showing the interaction between nature and the cityscape. She was always aware of the intersection of nature and culture, but architectural forms didn’t enter her paintings in a purposeful way until recently. “From an early age, I was attracted to the connection between nature and urban spaces,” Hodson said. “I ﬁnd the juxtaposition of organic shapes in nature against the industrial and angular positioning of city forms

Ingredients: • 1 pound bulk pork sausage • 1 cup coarsely chopped onion • 4 cups peeled potatoes cut in 1/2-inch cubes • 2 cups water • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram, crushed • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper • 1 17-ounce can cream-style corn • 1 17-ounce can whole-kernel corn, drained • 1 12-ounce can evaporated milk

Instructions: In a Dutch oven or kettle, cook the pork sausage and onion until the sausage is brown and the onion is tender. Drain mixture on paper towels. Return sausage mixture to Dutch oven. Stir in potatoes, water, salt, marjoram, and pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, about 15 minutes or until potato is just tender. After owning a pizzeria in Pasadena, Calif., for three years, Roy Herijanto came to Indianapolis two months ago to open his second restaurant, T.J. Pizza. He was visiting the area with friends and “saw the opportunity around this area,” Herijanto said. “So far it’s growing.” Herijanto said he started serving pizza because “the majority of people love it.” Despite having a variety of toppings such as barbecue chicken and Mediterranean and Tuscan styles, “People in Indianapolis love three kinds: pepperoni, cheese and sausage. In California, they love everything.” T.J. also has begun serving bubble tea, which Herijanto describes as “a pure tea from Thailand that tastes like coffee. It’s very unique.” Currently, T.J., which is named after Herijanto’s wife’s initials, has a small dine-in area and is mostly a carry-out business. Delivery service might be added, he said.

after a car accident. Mr. Cooke was born April 22, 1922 in Carroll County, Indiana, to the late Chester C. and Lottie Ann Brown Cooke. He was a graduate of Hanover College, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He received his master’s degree from Indiana University. Mr. Cooke was a WWII Navy veteran. He retired as superintendent of the Northwestern School Corporation in 1987. Mr. Cooke was the first principal of Carroll High School after the consolidation and was previously the principal at Flora High School. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity, Rotary Clubs in Flora, Kokomo and Carmel, and was a member of the Mayor’s Substance Abuse Council in Kokomo and was also a Board Member of the United Way. He had been a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Churches of Flora and Kokomo. Memorial services were Nov. 24 in Second Presbyterian Church (Indianapolis), of which he was a member. Mr. Cooke is survived by his wife, Barbara Bennett Cooke; sons Will, Tom (Jill), Dave (Kim) and Tony (Lisa); nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
