Tallying takes longer than usual

As Gov. Mike Pence was congratulating the Republican state candidates on their wins, candidates in Hamilton County still were awaiting first election word of their race results. A technical issue with the tallying machine left approximately two dozen people gathered at the Hamilton County Judicial Center waiting for hours on election night.

The 6,307 absentee ballots were the first results announced at 9:14 p.m. with final results being released at 10:53 p.m. – almost five hours after polls closed on Nov. 4.

“I am concerned,” Hamilton County Democrat Party Chairman Keith Clock said he and others waited for word on the results.

The issues were frustrating to Clock who said he has become accustomed to election night delays.

“It seems like we are the last ones to report. Tonight (Nov. 4) was no exception,” he said. “But tonight we had glitch after glitch. I’m still walking away not 100 percent sure what happened.”

Clock said his issues involved a new Microvote employee retallying votes independently without the absentee board present and card readers going out.

“Technicians are tallying numbers in the basement,” he said. “All I can do is sit there and be upset about it.”

Clock said he questions the results.

“I don’t have faith in them,” he said. “I don’t have faith

in the process right now.”

Hamilton County Election Administrator Kathy Richardson said Clock signed off on the results, making them official.

“He had the ability to go downstairs with them. I’m not sure why he’s so upset,” she said. “There was not a glitch in the system. The absentee numbers matched the report.”

Richardson said Microvote took the voting machines used for absentee/early voting and tallied them out earlier on Election Clock Day. She said the eight machines, which contain all 217 ballots on them, take approximately 20 minutes each to tally. In comparison, precinct machines maybe have three ballots.

“We started late on counting absentee cards that go through the scanner,” Richardson said, adding cards were finished after 7:30 p.m. inside the Judicial Center.

“One card had an error and it cleared out the absentees.

It cleared out all that work he’d done in the morning.”

While all precincts were in by 8 p.m., the process had to be restarted and because of the way the system is set up the absentee ballots needed to be run before the more than 500 precinct machines. Adding to the difficulties was one tallying machine stopped working.

“We had 500 cards to run through one machine,” Richardson said. “Having to redo absentee (ballots) put us back a couple hours.”

What Happened: Justin Moffett’s Old Town Design Group gave a presentation on the Sunrise on the Monon development.

What it means: As previously reported by Current, the 77-acre development at 9876 Westfield Blvd., is where the old golf course sat for many years. The development features a variety of housing types, including single-family and multifamily. It should appeal to empty nesters, a growing demographic. Moffett said there will be pedestrian paths and a new park named after Vera Hinshaw.

What’s next: The ordinance was sent to the Land Use, Annexation and Economic Development committee which meets next on Nov. 25.

What Happened: The City Council unanimously approved the Green House Cottages.

What it means: Without any discussion, the council easily voted for this development, which would feature cottage-style living for a unique way to offer senior care. The proposed project features six cottage homes, approximately 8,000 square feet each, and one administrative building on 4.6 acres. Each home would feature up to 12 private rooms, of approximately 300 square feet each, with a central open kitchen and communal dining area.

What’s next: The development passed.

What Happened: The City Council unanimously approved the Grannan Grove PUD. What it means: This development was also passed easily without any debate. The developer plans to build 14 houses on 9.774 acres with a common area, located at 3739 W. 141st Street.

What’s next: The development passed.

What Happened: A public hearing was held with regard to fixing the reflecting pool.

What it means: No member of the public spoke at the public hearing – perhaps because it was close to kickoff time for the Colts Monday Night Football game – but readers have sent Current plenty of opinions on this issue. The plan is to take $613,200 from the Rainy Day fund to pay for repairs to the damaged reflecting pool, which was built by the Carmel Redevelopment Commission more than a decade ago using some money from a $1 million federal grant. City Councilor Rick Sharp has questioned why the CRC can’t pay to fix the problem.

What’s next: The ordinance was sent to the Finance, Administration and Rules Committee, which meets next on Nov. 20.

CEF awards fall grants

The Carmel Education Foundation rewards teachers with great ideas each spring and fall with grants. This fall, 17 grants education were awarded to 44 teachers totaling $15,554. These funds were raised from fundraising events, including last months’ Ghosts and Goblins 5K and a telethon.

The grants given are determined based on the CEF grant committee’s application reviewing process. During this process, Margaret Hollies served as the grant committee chairperson

while Stephanie McDonald and Barbara Danquist co-directed and managed the online website for proposals.

Grants are offered to teachers who have ideas that further excellence in education through projects, technology, or professional development.

Hollies said: “We hope to continue to increase our funding of teacher grants in the future. We continue to explore ways with the teachers and administration in which we can assist more teachers in the Carmel Clay Schools.”

City’s 2015 budget passes

Conservation district approved

The Carmel City Council voted unanimously on Nov. 3 to approve Mayor Jim Brainard’s city budget for 2015 after a government last-second proposed cut by one councilor.

City Councilor Luci Snyder suggested at the final meeting that $1.2 million be cut from the city’s $131,020,555 budget. This represents about 1.6 percent of the budget.

Snyder asked for the cut because there were some discrepancies when it came to revenue projections. Curt Conrod, a financial consultant for the city, projected excise tax to be around $4.2 million and revenue from permits to be around $2.1 million. The Clerk-Treasurer’s Office said it received numbers that projects $2.9 million for excise and $1.7 million for permits.

Snyder said the difference in revenue projections equals $2.6 million and instead of arguing about which projection is right or wrong she said it would be wise to “split the difference” and cut $1.3 million.

City Councilor Sue Finkam said she believes Conrod’s estimates are sound because they are based on past figures and it should be expected that with a growing population that these revenues will rise.

The Carmel City Council voted 4-3 on Nov. 3 to approve turning the Johnson Addition neighborhood into a conservagovernment tion district. This status – slightly below a historic designation – will make it so a commission would have to approve selling a home, tearing one down or making major alterations.

The vote split among familiar lines. councilors Luci Snyder, Rick Sharp, Carol Schleif and Eric Seidensticker all voted for it, while Councilors Sue Finkam, Kevin “Woody” Rider and Ron Carter voted against the designation.

Many residents in the 1950s-style neighborhood, which is south of Main Street, west of 4th Avenue and east of Guilford Road, have expressed concerns that large out-of-character homes could endanger the feel of their community.

Ultimately, the vote came down to respecting the wishes of the people. Some felt the petition – which had more than 50 percent of the households sign – showed that a majority wanted to become a conservation district.

But others questioned whether the petition was a true reflection. Rider said he rarely trusts petitions because people can be misinformed.

“Finances are interconnected and the entire picture must be considered,” she said. “My decision is always to make the more conservative decision as I am spending other people’s money and I believe that in this unsettled economic environment, it is wise to be prudent. The economy is not robust and we are not in recovery. The stock market reflects the unsettled economy and economists believe we could slip into another recession.”

which is filled with untruths.

“I do not trust petitions. I just don’t,” he said.

“Petitions are just what are said to people on their porches.”

Carter suggested that “scare tactics” might have been used to obtain signatures and that creating the conservation district could negatively affect home values.

Finkam said she opposes Main Street being included in this plan because it has a different character than the rest of the neighborhood.

But the other four councilors said they saw no problem with the petition.

CHS students take aim at comedy

The Carmel High School theater department students have embraced the theater comedy challenge of “The Beaux’ Stratagem.” The show’s performers will display their sword fight skills on Nov. 13 through Nov. 15 in the high school’s Studio Theater.

“The stage combat is a lot of fun with the sword fighting,” senior Austin Jacobs said.

Senior Kristin Barnes, who plays Dorinda, is enjoying the physical comedy.

“There’s an interesting fight sequence where our love interests come in to save the day,” Barnes said. “They end up having trouble doing so and so we step in and say, ‘let the ladies show you how it’s done.’ It’s fun.”

Junior Haley Glickman enjoys her character, Mrs. Kate Sullen.

“She’s really cool,” she said. “She is the embodiment of a strong woman. The cool part is her love interest really likes her for that. I love the script.”

The play, a Restoration (period from 1660 to 1710 after the British monarchy was restored) comedy, was written by George Farquhar and first performed in 1707. It was adapted by Ken Ludwig in 2004 at the request of Thornton Wilder’s estate. Wilder had not finished his adaptation he started decades earlier.

“The thing that I love about the show is there is always so much going on but not so much that it’s confusing,” Barnes said. “There’s never a dull moment on the stage. There’s always something the audience gets to figure out or watch unfold.”

A fight choreographer has helped them with the swords, which are not sharpened.

“There’s a lot of specific technique to it that you don’t understand when you are watching it on TV,” Barnes said.

The performers had a few rehearsals simulating the sword fighting before getting the actual props.

“Safety first,” Glickman said.

Like Glickman, sophomore Jessie Ballard loves her character, too.

ter I’ve played,” Ballard said. “I get to be huge on stage and not have to worry about pulling focus because that’s what she is there for to a degree.

She’s very over-the-top and doesn’t care which I love. It’s what’s fun about Restoration (theater) because she’s so sure of herself.”

Senior Duncan Moran said this is his 10th production and this has been his favorite role to play.

“Mostly because I have that interaction with the audience and play with the fourth wall every once in awhile,” Moran said.

This is the 12th production Barnes has been in at the high school so she has performed several times in the Dale E. Graham Auditorium and studio theater, which will seat about 200 for this show.

“I have a love for both,” Barnes said of the theaters. “When you have a studio theater, you have more liberties to take with the stage. Our director and technical head design a different set for every show. It allows more creative license.

You can be more intimate with your audience and make different choices than you have to make on the main stage. There’s a certain sense of disbelief and magic in a full auditorium that a lot of audience members prefer.”

Jim Peterson, the high school’s theater and film department director, said there is a lot of puns and cynicism toward marriage.

“They’ve embraced it for the wacky silliness that it is,” Peterson said.

There will be shows at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, 14 and 15 and a 2 p.m. show on Nov. 15. Tickets are on sale at ticketracker.com. Tickets are $10.

The event may have been held to benefit the Carmel Clay Public Library, but the Ritz Charles was the place to be for anniversary the 10th Annual Guilded Leaf Book and Author Luncheon last month.

With the generous sponsorship of the Guggenheim Life and Annuity, two gorgeous ballrooms were filled with items donated for auction, copies of the books written by the attending authors, beautifully appointed tables for the gourmet lunch, and, most importantly, the dedicated members and supporters of the Guild. Though it was the 10th year for the event to be held, this year marked the 100th anniversary of the library itself. The 10 years this event has been held have been fruitful -to put it mildly. Fifty best-selling authors have come to talk, inspire, sign copies of their works, and enjoy themselves.

Julie Shadinger, the ex-officio Guild president, is delighted by this aspect.

“It gives the authors a chance to meet each other. At typical signings authors have to rush from place to place. At our event they are able to relax and enjoy themselves,” she said.

Both Shadinger and Jenny Purvis, this year’s event chairperson, have lots more to be excited about. The Guild has raised more than $500,000 to put toward children’s literacy programs at the library. The event was populated with attendees

CRC moves towards city bonds The Carmel Redevelopment Commission voted on Oct. 30 to approve a preliminary resolution to take out city-backed development bonds to fund phase two of the Carmel City Center.

CRC Director Corrie Meyer said the city wouldn’t actually obtain the bonds – not to exceed $20 million – until about 18 months from now, but this step in the process gives the developer, Pedcor, a guarantee so construction can begin.

Loren Matthes, of H.J. Umbaugh & Associates, an accounting firm contracted by the city, presented detailed estimates of how much tax increment finance revenue would be generated through development of this area.

The TIF money would be the first choice to pay off the debt of a newly constructed parking garage that will support more than 10 new buildings. If TIF revenue is insufficient, there are several layers of developer guarantees, which means Pedcor would make up the funding shortfalls. If for some reason Pedcor fails to pay and other avenues have been exhausted, then a special benefits tax would automatically kick in and charge taxpayers to pay off this debt.

Matthes provided a chart that shows estimated TIF money and the debt service on the bond for every year from 2018 to 2040. In total, her firm estimates that $28.7 million in TIF will be generated and debt service will be $26.1 million. These estimates assume no growth so as to be conservative.

In some instances, property owners have successfully appealed their property taxes, which means that TIF revenue would be less than anticipated. In this instance, that might not happen because if TIF revenue is lower than expected then Pedcor would still have to help make up the difference.

In other news, the CRC also voted to finalize its agreement with Keystone Construction Group about using TIF money to repay a developerbacked bond to support the Olivia on Main building. The City Council asked that the money only be spent on infrastructure, such as drainage improvements, and not on things like landscaping.

Ninety percent of the TIF will help repay the bond and the rest goes back to the city via the CRC. The CRC also announced it received two bids for $1.7 million worth of unused land situated in Midtown area. Old Town Design Group bid $1.722 million and Barrett and Stokley bid $2.5 million. The land is west of the Monon Trail, south of 2nd Avenue SW and east of 3rd Avenue/4th Avenue SW.

This season, many Indianapolis, Fishers and Carmel seniors who are alone or impoverished will receive some holiday cheer Charity thanks to the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program. Sponsored by the local Home Instead Senior Care office, the program brings together area nonprofits, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community to provide gifts and companionship for lonely and isolated seniors.

“It is heartbreaking to think of the senior members of our community spending the holidays all by themselves, without any gifts or any way to celebrate the season,” says Jeff Sewell, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Indianapolis, Fishers and Carmel. “But all too often, that’s what happens when seniors live alone. It can be a really tough time of year

for them.”

Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with local Walgreens locations to help with the gift collection and distribution. Program officials hope to collect 1000 gifts in order to help area seniors this holiday season.

Participating retail locations will display Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas trees from now until Dec.15 that feature ornaments with seniors’ first names and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick ornaments from the trees, buy the items listed and return them unwrapped (and with the ornament attached) to the store.

“During this season of giving, we encourage shoppers to buy a little extra for a local senior,” said Sewell “Your gift - and more importantly the visit that comes with the delivery – could make their holiday season.”

Carmel High School Principal John Williams announced last week that 58 students have been named Commended Students education in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

More than 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for

their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Tavern to help puppy

For animal lovers, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 15, Moon Dog Tavern, 4825 E. 96th St., is the place to be as the tavern hosts its annual charity animal fundraiser.

For $25 anyone can order to get one drink and an appetizer, as well as the opportunity to win locally donated items from businesses, such as Reis-Nichols, through auctions and raffles.

After 7 p.m. the private room where the event will be held will open up and everyone can enjoy live music from the band My Yellow Rickshaw. All this fun serves a serious purpose. The proceeds from this event will go toward paying the extensive veterinary bills of the terrier-mix, Jasmine.

Jasmine was given a 10 percent chance of survival when she was taken to the veterinarian.

“She wasn’t what we were looking for but we fell in love with her personality,” said Valerie Peko, Jasmine’s adoptive mother. “She is family.

She’s become another member of our family.”

She was losing her battle against the almostfatal parvovirus and had to be resuscitated three times while in the hospital. Now, she’s a face-licking, tail-wagging, puppy-shaped ball of energy.

All of the medical procedures were clearly worth it, but they did come at a high price. Nate Taylor, a manager at Moon Dog, said it was the

Race keeps getting better

It was a gathering not often seen in these parts. Very quickly, a few oddly clad folks turned into several. Then sevvolunteerism eral swelled to many, until a huge crowd of characters laid claim to the Carmel High School parking lot. There was complete order as The Big Bad Wolf did not seem to bother Little Red Riding Hood. The Mime did not irritate bystanders by trying to get out of the box and not one Dalmatian got over-excited and had an accident on the floor.

Each Trojan Warrior, Elsa, Jailbird, Man-eating Shark, Scary Witch or Skeleton were there to run or jog as part of the 6th Annual Ghosts & Goblins 5K/2K and Wellness Fair. The very successful event this year drew more than 2,100 participants like seventh grader Lily and third grader Sydney. Lily and Sydney’s Mom, Dana Green raised her hand and accepted the title of Race Chairwoman.

She said: “It seems like each year the race just gets better and better. I am especially proud of the way students step up and take key leadership roles.”

Morgan Montgomery, John Chen, Jason Klein, Matt Klineman, Michelle Dai, Joie Li, Abby Abel, Diana Goren and James Holland representing the Key Club, GCom and National Honor Society groups are the type of kids she is talking about.

In all, 200 volunteers started early and stayed late to make it a great day.

Green also wanted to credit key members of the committee who spent months planning. She listed Jen Robbins, Janet Corbin, Rachel Ferry, Leslie Smith, Kim Tenbrink, Greg Osborne, Kyle Harlemart and Pat Pickett among those who helped.

Carmel Education Foundation executive co-directors Stephanie McDonald and Barbara Danquist couldn’t believe the support and participation by each of the schools in the District.

Prairie Trace Elementary took top honors in their division for just being so great. Clay Middle School did not disappoint, repeating their top honor distinction for the third year in a row. It probably did not hurt that Prairie Trace Elementary brought along 101 Dalmatians for their “Who Let The Dogs Out” flash mob performance.

At the end of the day, the committee was successful in reaching their financial goal. All of the money raised will be used to fund teacher grants for special projects in the classroom.

Congratulations to the entire team for another successful race, and shout out to Special Assistant Kiki. You are awesome. Good Day, Carmel.

Saiia and his Mobile Art Show

By Chris Bavender • news@currentincarmel.com Michael Saiia always has his cell phone at the ready – capturing life as it happens around him.

“I started shooting in 1996 when exhibit I was 18 and was given an Olympus 35mm camera. I fell in love with photography,” he said. “As life meandered on and technology advanced, I began shooting and editing on my Palm Pre. That was almost eight years ago.”

He’s taken that love of photography and the on-the-go aspect of his mobile phone to create a Mobile Art show. From 8 to 11 p.m. Nov. 15, you can view 150 images at the One One Six Apartments Clubhouse - 760 Walkabout Cir E, Carmel.

“This is a very exciting time for me as I’ve been envisioning this show for years now,” Saiia said. “The timing is right and I’m more than excited to display and sell my Mobile Art and to shine light on the accessibility most of us have to explore the new world of Mobile Art.” Saiia said mobile art is ideal for not only personal use, but businesses as well.

“It’s ideal for creating a calming, peaceful setting in areas such as professional office and medical office waiting rooms or reception areas that may, more often than not, be susceptible to stress and anxiety felt by everyday clients,” he said.

He said he believes anyone can create mobile art.

You don’t have to be standing in your living room to enjoy mobile art … it goes with you.”

Saiia – who moved to Carmel in March 2013 from Columbus, Ohio – hopes the concept of mobile art will grow.

“When I show people my artwork and explain to them that it was all created on my mobile phone, they are usually very surprised. My goal with my Mobile Art Show is to knock the socks off of my guests,” he said. “I’ve been a DJ for 16 years and I will be recording the entire night’s music beforehand so that’s going to be fun. I’ll have 150 images, dancing around 15 flat screens. It’s going to be a blast and an event you’ll want to say you were there.”

It has been a marriage that has served the center and area students well. anniversary Lindsay Brabb, the center’s director, said a recent success story was a Pendleton Heights High School student, who attends Huntington, recently register a perfect score of 36 on her ACT. Kurt Spitler, owner and executive director, said 95 percent of their business comes from Carmel, Zionsville, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield.

“But we have students from all over,” Spitler said. “We had a college professor bring his son up from Bloomington twice a week last year. He probably passed 15 different learning centers to get here but he preferred our program.”

Brabb said the center does ACT, SAT prep and prep for state entrance exams to get into private schools such as Park Tudor.

“Half our prep is getting kids ready for ACT or SAT and the other half is what we call our learning center is to increase students’ skill sets,” Spitler said. “One of the big misnomers is if your kid comes to Huntington he is struggling. Actually 25 percent of our kids might be one grade level and their parents want them to be two grade levels ahead. It’s truly enrichment for a lot of our students. Or a lot of time we will have students who are straight As in everything except math.

Not your average neighborhood hero Commentary by Don Allen In the course of a conversation with a neighbor Jack Mansell I noticed a very official-looking badge in his wallet. Being veterans DAy a retired police officer, of course, I had to ask him about it. He explained he is a retired firefighter from the Los Angeles area. Never one to just leave it at that, I pressed for more. He informed me that he was a fire department captain and was injured during the Watts riots in 1965. His crew was in a burning building when it collapsed, severely injuring Captain Mansell and killing two of his men. He was forced to retire from service as a result of his injuries. I had to know more.

We stood and talked for some time, during which he casually mentioned that he had gone into fire service after coming home from World War II. He said he had been a fighter pilot assigned to a bomber escort duty. As a result of his valiant service, Captain Jack Mansell was awarded four Purple Hearts. He humbly declared that God was sitting on his lap in the aircraft and gave Him credit for delivering him back to his base after his missions. It was at that moment that I realized that I was in the presence of true heroism.

My good friend and Village of WestClay neighbor is Assistant Chief Dave Haboush of the

Carmel Fire Dept. As soon as I told him the story of my chance meeting with Jack, Dave began making plans for a very special evening to honor our neighborhood hero. He contacted his sources at what had been Jack’s fire department in California who were pleased that someone was honoring this great American.

Chief Haboush arranged for Jack and his wife Laurie to come to CFD Station 42 (at 106th Street and Shelbourne Road) for dinner. As fate would have it, the on-duty crew got a fire call just as we were about ready to serve dinner. Captain Jack was thrilled to see the engine roll out of the station, lights and sirens blazing. You could see the excitement sparkle in his nearly 90-year-old eyes as the engine left the station – he said, “That never leaves you.”

After a wonderful dinner prepared by the fire crew (and stirred by the Chief), Jack and Laurie entertained us with stories of his amazing military and fire career.

As the evening came to a close, our Jack declared that in the 15 years that he and Laurie have lived in Carmel this was the best thing to ever happen to them. If you get a chance to meet this amazing servant of our country, you will know, as I did, that you are in the presence of a true American hero…our neighbor, Jack Mansell.

How one Carmel business is changing the face of children's toys

Edwin the Duck aims to be a parent’s as well as a child’s best friend, entertaining and educating at the same time.

The rubber duck, the brainchild of Carmel’s pi lab, provides support in cover story many different forms from bathtime to bedtime.

“What we’ve set out to do is to create the world’s smartest toy and a toy that doesn’t get boring in an hour, in a week, in a month or in a year,” Don Inmon said. “It’s updated every month with new stories, new lullabies, adventure games and educational applications. From our perspective, it’s a tool for a parent to help them with their kids.”

Edwin the Duck, with help from a mobile app, can assist with lullabies, story times, serve as a night light and even measure the temperature of bathwater. Edwin can float in bathwater with his waterproof speaker.

“One of the toughest things any parent has is to get the kid to go to sleep,” said Inmon, who has three children. “This is to help with that along with teaching him how to read, how to write, how to spell at accelerated rate. But utilizing a nostalgic rubber ducky with the latest technology with the latest applications through tablets or phones.”

The website is Edwintheduck.com. The pi lab, which has an office at 252 Main St. in Carmel, is made of co-founders Inmon (president) and Matt MacBeth (CEO). Amy Unger has joined as the director of marketing. Inmon, MacBeth and Unger worked together at Klipsch so Inmon said they have an audio background. Alicia Thorson serves as the director of education.

“When they touch the story, Edwin is going to react,” Inmon said. “If there is lightning or thunder, the duck is going to make that sound.”

The duck can also take a temperature by aiming it at the person’s head, Inmon said.

The duck is available on kickstarter.com, which Inmon said is a great way to get exposure for the product in addition to raising more money for the start-up.

Edwin the Duck can be pre-ordered for $50 on kickstarter.com, a crowd-funding site.

About Edwin The name Edwin, billed as the world’s first interactive duck, comes from MacBeth’s middle name.

“The author for our stories called after we changed names and said Edwin is so brilliant because with education you win,” Inmon said. “I was like what? Oh, yeah.”

Inmon said the original working name for the duck was Clarence.

“It didn’t work and it would have caused us legal issues with the copyright,” Inmon said. “I like Edwin much better.”

There is a animated TV show titled “Clarence” on Cartoon Network.

That cost is for the first 200 people, then it gradually climbs up to a peak of $69 at Kickstarter.

“We have a goal of raising $85,000,” Inmon said. “The way Kickstarter works, you have to hit that goal to get that money. We did it not just to get money but to get exposure with the brand.

We are in talks with Apple and others to launch early next year.”

With the purchase of Edwin the Duck, you get the app with a story and a lullaby. Every month there will be an opportunity to buy a new story, lullaby or educational tool, Inmon said.

“We’re going to be producing hundreds of thousands (of ducks),” Inmon said. “The production (in China) is in progress.”

MacBeth moved to China for four months to oversee the production.

Inmon said children are normally using appcessories for 30 days. They hope Edwin’s appeal will be much longer.

“We’re trying to get something that becomes a best friend,” Inmon said.

The idea was formed between Inmon and MacBeth while they were observing things at the Hong Kong electronics show a year ago.

“Everyone we talked to about this, it made them smile,” Inmon said. “Apple said that’s really cool. We went out and raised money. It’s almost a year ago and we now have a physical product.”

Inmon said the age group ranges for the educational toy is from

infant to nine years old.

“We have a teen element that is interested more from the floating bluetooth speaker side,” Inmon said. “We took it to a pool party and threw it in and that’s all anyone wanted to talk about. It plays music rather well.”

Authors are on staff writing stories for Edwin, starting when he was a baby duck. The stories center on Edwin are gaining confidence and learning how to deal with tough situations. The stories are narrated or the parent or the child can read.

Unger said her 10-year-old son Steven constantly sings the bath time song, “Squishy Squishy Squashy.”

“It’s almost so childlike, it’s cool,” Unger said.

“It’s that kind of retro thing.”

Inmon said the pi lab team views Edwin as the toy that never gets old.

“We don’t even know what it’s going to do in a year,” he said. “It’s going to continue to grow.”

Army veteran finds best friend through Pets Healing Vets

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Justin Seifried certainly believes in love at first sight. It happened for Seifried and his Dutchess.

Seifried, a U.S. Army Fundraiser veteran who served in Afghanistan, went looking for his lost cat in May at the Humane Society for Hamilton County and the animal lover couldn’t help but take a peek at the dogs.

Dutchess, a mixed breed of collie, corgi and beagle, caught his eye. She was let out to play and snatched Seifried’s heart.

“I felt so bad. I knew I couldn’t go anywhere else without her,” said Seifried, a 24-year-old Fishers resident. “There was no way I could get a different dog because I found my best friend.”

When Seifried asked about adoption procedures, Amanda Ryan, manager of community outreach for Humane Society for Hamilton County, informed him about the Pets Healing Vets program. The program pairs qualifying veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury with shelter animals in need of homes. The program is open to vets throughout the state.

Ryan explained to Seifried how the emotional support animals can be adopted for free and bills would be paid for spay/neuter and vaccines. The humane society also provides training and ongoing behavior counseling if needed.

is,” said Seifried, who later had his lost cat returned to him. “You don’t see many businesses and human societies go all out for veterans like that. It really touched me.”

Seifried, who was driving, suffered a serious concussion when his truck was hit by a 500-pound roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

“It was so big. I just blacked out,” Seifried said.

“My squad leader thought I was dead because I was out cold. Later when I got back, I was told I’d have permanent brain swelling, which means my brain got jarred so bad that it’s constantly bruised. My memory has started to slip a bit. I have some complications in my left eye.

“It made me who I am today. It made me see the little things and appreciate what a soldier goes through over there.”

Seifried had various other injuries and wounds during his tour. A grenade went off near his ear, causing some hearing loss.

“My body definitely took a beat down over there,” Seifried said.

His 101st unit was part of the biggest missions in Afghanistan history called Operation Strong Eagle III in 2011.

“I lost six of my best friends in six hours,” Seifried said. “I wear this bracelet to remind me of them.”

Seifried had enlisted in the Army, 10 days after graduating from Livermore (Iowa) High School in 2009. He took a medical discharge on Sept. 1, 2012. He served one 13-month tour of Afghanistan.

“I was in on at least 150 firefights and highprofile missions and definitely saw my action as a 19-year-old kid,” he said.

Dutchess can sense when Seifried needs support.

“We’ve had our rough times thinking about the memories overseas,” Seifried said. “She knows when I’m upset. She’ll come to me when I’m laying on bed thinking. She’ll lay her head on my chest and get really close to me. An emotional support dog is exactly what she is. She’s loving and caring. She does this thing where you can actually see her smile. When she knows I’m sad,

she’ll smile.”

The two friends rescued each other.

“I like to say she needs me as much as I need her and I need her a lot,” he said.

AlphaGraphics, a Carmel printing business, is a big supporter of the two-year-old Pets Healing Vets program Every day, 22 veterans commit suicide. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals (1.2 million dogs, 1.4 million cats) are euthanized.

“This is a way to put these two populations together and help both of them,” said Rhonda Kile, who owns the business with her husband Michael.

A Pets Healing Vets fundraising event will be held at AlphaGraphics, 12955 Old Meridian St., Carmel, from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 8. The event is also hosted by A Cut Above Catering and Halo Salon.

Westfield site receives renovations

By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com What started more than a decade ago as a temporary garden of crosses made to honor Indiana’s fallen soldiers in the memorial front yard of Donald and Carol Peed turned into a permanently memorial at 401 N. Union St., Westfield.

The Fallen Hoosier Heroes Memorial for Enduring Freedom, which was created in 2002, is now undergoing another renovation.

The memorial was started by Vietnam Veteran Command Sgt. Major Donald E. Peed after Sept. 11.

“He wanted to go to Iraq,” said his wife, Carol.

“He wanted to be there if the guys needed somebody to talk to. He was told no so he came up with the idea of the crosses.”

Carol said the memorial had 66 white crosses when Donald, 67, died from a heart attack caused by the effects of Agent Orange in September 2005.

“He was a very patriotic person,” she said.

“When we put the first cross in the ground we never dreamed it would amount to what it has become.”

As a result of the harsh winters and time, Carol said the crosses began to deteriorate and the memorial committee felt it was not a fair honoring of the deceased soldiers.

“Some were starting to rot,” Carol said.

“We took them down and are trying plaques for now. It’s a lot of work,” said Bill Doss, an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. “The crosses made a big impact, but I feel just as much of an impact with the stones. It opens it up more.”

Doss said the future is uncertain as the memorial committee has a vision to create a unique memorial in a larger area.

“With 206 kids we’ve run out of space. Two hundred and forty-eight have died on duty while serving … We don’t want to see any more die,” he

Dennis Zavada, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, assists with the maintenance and care of the memorial.

“We’ve had help from a variety of different people. There is a lot of good people volunteering – veterans, nonveterans, kids and the elderly,” he said.

Zavada said mementos left by family members were collected and will be returned once all renovations are finished.

The first cross placed was in memory of U.S. Marine Sgt. Jeannette L. Winters, 25, of Gary.

Veterans Day Ceremonies Carmel – The city will host its “Home of the Brave” themed Veterans Day ceremony at noon Nov. 10 at Tarkington Theater in the Center for the Performing Arts, 3 Center Green.

Participants include Mayor Jim Brainard, The American Legion Department of Indiana District 6 Commander Yvonne Kraemer as keynote speaker, Carmel VFW/American Legion Honor Guard, the Carmel Elementary School Choir and the Actors Theatre of Indiana. The city-wide “Home of the Brave” poster and essay contest winners also will be recognized. Students will read their winning essays at the ceremony. The event is free to the public.

Noblesville – Noblesville will host its ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at War Monument at the Hamilton County Courthouse Square in Noblesville. The ceremony will be put on by American Legion Post No. 45 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 6246 and will include a 21-gun salute, opening and closing prayers and speeches. Because City of Noblesville government offices will be closed for Veterans Day, parking in the city parking lots will be free Nov. 11.

Mankind has long inflicted an abundance of inhumanity upon itself. For centuries we humans, even as we imagine art, science, literature and civilization, seem compelled to segregate and destroy ourselves. When no logical division is apparent, we will fabricate one.

In Poland for business, I extended the trip to visit the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. Words fail to adequately describe the jarring reality of walking the lanes and into the chambers wherein so very many innocents were murdered. It is a shameful place. But, it is an important one. Our abject ability to commit unimaginable acts is only eclipsed by our desire to forget, or even in some cases deny, that they occur. The physical reminder challenges those who would eagerly forget.

These perditions brought a tortuous end to

the lives of many hundreds of thousands of Jews – likewise, many thousands more Poles, Catholics, homosexuals, and others deemed inferior or even evil. Some adhere to the adage that we must study history or we are doomed to repeat it. Perhaps they have a point. But isn’t it more likely that we must study history to predict what we are likely or even inevitable to do again so that we can guard against it. Genocide, as stunningly unfortunate as it is to say, it not restricted to one time or to one race. Is it possible that the human urge to destroy is every bit as strong as the desire to build? Is the ISIS tribal extermination in the Middle East and the Christian slaughter in Africa simply a continuation of the worst in us? Even as we mourn the past, how do we defend our future?

At my age, I was aware of what was happening. Maybe it was due to too many fatty foods; there was clearly a blockage. Mary Ellen said not to ignore the symptoms and call a professional.

“Hello, Rex Plumbing. Can I help you?”

“Hi, Pam, it’s Dick Wolfsie. Our disposal isn’t working. All I hear is a whirring sound and I can’t stop it.”

“We don’t stop things at Rex Plumbing,” she told me. “We un-stop things.”

Everyone’s a comedian.

About an hour later, Rex knocked—on time, as always. I called out that the door was open. I was already in the kitchen. “Where are you, Dick?” Rex screamed.

“Here, Rex,” I said.

Rex walked over to the sink, accompanied by an apprentice, apparently there to learn the trade. That’s when I noticed it…

“You don’t have any tools, Rex. Where are your tools? All you have is a plunger.”

“That’s all I need.”

“Don’t say that. No monkey wrenches? No hammers? No hydraulic pumps? If all you brought is a plunger to fix this, why do I need you? I have a plunger.”

Rex approached the sink, flicked the disposal switch and confirmed my diagnosis. Then, he deftly maneuvered his plunger into the sink’s drain, pressed his thumb into the rubber cup to create a vacuum and in one swift but decisive maneuver fixed the problem. “We’re done here,” said Rex as he handed me the bill. I turned to his apprentice and asked if he had learned from his experience at my house.

He said he had no regrets about not going to medical school.

The next day things were humming along in my kitchen, but now I had computer problems.

I was trying to save some files so they could not be erased. Ironic, but now I wanted a backup. I called Kevin with Nerds On Call. He also arrived in a timely fashion, but once again, no tools.

Kevin sat down at the computer to do his magic. I had several computer issues, and Kevin worked diligently, addressing every one.

Sixty minutes later he was done. I paid him exactly the same amount I had paid Rex. As Kevin was leaving I told him he had done an excellent job, but that there was something he could learn from my plumber. “And what would that be?” he asked, just a bit miffed.

“How to make a hundred bucks in 60 seconds.”

That’s when he reminded me about the time he came over to the house to fix the printer and simply put the plug back in the socket.

No time for mid-life crisis

I think I’m having a mid-life crisis and I’m only partially kidding. I’m constantly feeling discontented at work and at home, and humor I can’t seem to stop the anxiety over things that are completing out of my control. World events, mean people, physical signs of aging . . . it all has me thinking that a sabbatical in Saint Barts is just the ticket.

My husband Doo went through one last year.

He started working out excessively, talked of buying a convertible Porsche, and seriously contemplated how to make bank and retire early. He was engaged in parenting only partially, and even then complained of the carpools and the expense and the general time commitment of raising four children. His “manopause” lasted about six months, and I’m thrilled to report he is completely back to his more realistic and happy self.

Now it’s my turn. The problem is, a mom’s collapse is far worse than a dad’s. I’m the default parent, the go-to adult who helps with homework and makes lunches and signs permission slips and coordinates transportation and cleans toilets and settles arguments and schedules appointments and creates magical birthday parties. When I’m in a bad mood, which of late seems to me the norm, “stuff” doesn’t get done, and consequently, everyone’s world turns upside-down. Then my mommy guilt kicks in, and the cycle begins again.

Exacerbating the situation, my family is com-

pletely disregarding my “buttons,” though they resemble bright orange traffic barrels. They truly don’t seem to care that the house is a disaster, that despite my best efforts I can’t improve my 5K time, or that my profession no longer carries the same joy it once did. Jeeze! When did I turn into Danny Downer?

I am trying. I’ve come to terms with the reading glasses that taunt me from my bedside table and the fact that my first floor will never appear in Architectural Digest. I recognize that it’s not too late for a career change, and that it’s within my power to delegate many of my responsibilities, both domestic and professional, to lift some of the weight I carry. And I’ve become much better at setting priorities, with the top three pertaining to actual humans rather than tasks.

Still, lately I’ve definitely been in a funk.

Alas, one of my daughters is smirking at me, playing a haunting tune on her tiny air violin to signal that this descent into self-pitydom must end. Now. But I do enjoy a good Woe-Is-Me party!

Wallowing in despair always makes me feel a tad bit better. Or maybe that’s the pinot finally kicking in. Regardless, thanks for “listening.” I might not need that tropical escape after all! Peace out.

Hire a lobbyist?

Editor, On April 4, 2014, the State of Indiana shut down U.S. 31 in the Carmel area in order to rebuild the highway. The work should be done by the end of November. Thus, for eight months that section of the highway will be have closed.

Businesses along that section of U.S. 31 are complaining about the loss of business due to

the highway’s reconstruction. If there is not legal recourse for those businesses to get compensation from the State of Indiana, perhaps those businesses should hire a lobbyist in order to get a bill though the Indiana General Assembly which would compensate them for their lost profits.

Editor, After reading your attack on the ‘weak-minded liberal people,’ I couldn’t just throw your paper in the trash without responding. It’s an insult to attack her intelligence & accomplishments by stating that all she did was to ‘marry well.’ That’s a chauvinistic remark that insults women.

We all have faults. We all make mistakes. I didn’t see you including in your article the fact that she later corrected herself by restating what she has in fact been saying for years.

It seems you are fostering a society of haters, when articles are written that attack someone

in the manner in which yours did. Whatever happened to practicing the golden rule, honesty is the best policy or before we judge someone, walk a mile in their shoes?

Corrie Meyer, director of the Carmel Redevelopment Commission, distributed a colorful, easyto-read packet to help present plain talk its plan for city-backed bonds to pay for a parking garage for the second phase of the Carmel City Center.

The packet was obviously of graphic artists and marketing minds who wanted to put a positive spin on what the CRC describes as $80 to $100 million in private investment to create 10 buildings totaling 575,000 square feet. The Indianapolis Star described it as up to $20 million in new debt.

Meyer is a smart person who has anticipated there would be some resistance to any new municipally backed debt. Four of the seven members of the Carmel City Council have expressed their concerns about the level of debt the CRC has taken on.

The three-to four-story building would have up to 625 parking spaces with 75 percent dedicated to the public.

And as if it was crafted as a marketing tag line, the report touts the parking garage as: “Selfsupporting, Credit-Enhanced, Developed Maintained, Public Parking Garage.”

Those words were carefully chosen, let’s break it down.

that Meyer said tax increment finance money used to pay for this garage will supposedly only come from the parking garage’s TIF district and nowhere else.

• Credit-enhanced: This refers to the “special benefits tax” used as the final guarantee on the bond. Bruce Donaldson, of Barnes and Thornburg, said the SBT is only used to get a better interest rate and is never intended to be levied. City Council President Eric Seidensticker asked what would happen if they didn’t use it and he was told the interest rate could jump from around 4 percent to perhaps in the double digits. Of course, any mention of the SBT gets many people very nervous.

• Developer-maintained: This refers to the fact that the city owns the garage but doesn’t have to pay for maintenance. Some have criticized the CRC for the deal made with Keystone Construction with regard to

the Sophia Square parking garage, which the CRC/city pays to maintain.

• Public parking garage: Emphasis on “public” to ease concerns that the parking spaces will only be for residents. Some have criticized the first City Center parking garage for not having enough public spaces.

You can debate these numbers and whether these projections are accurate, but you can’t debate the fact that Meyer knows that some on the City Council will need some convincing to vote for these new bonds. Some will call it putting lipstick on a pig because they think it’s a bad deal, others will say that Meyer is just anticipating any potential criticisms and preventing them from happening.

Off-Main Street Players enjoy diversion from life

Theresa Koleszar views acting as a stress reliever from life’s day-to-day pressures.

“It’s kind of playtime for theater grownups,” Koleszar said.

Koleszar is performing in Zionsville’s Community Theatre’s Off-Main Street Players’ showing of “God of Carnage.” The oneact, 90-minute play includes four performers. The black comedy, which won the 2009 Tony Award for best play, centers on two couples from Brooklyn who get together after their 11-year-old sons are in a playground fight.

The Off-Main Street Players’ first performance was in 1966. That first group eventually disbanded but reformed in 2005.

Marcus Waye, a 41-year-old Fishers resident who appeared in the reformed Off-Main Street Players’ first production as a bellhop in “Plaza Suite” in 2005, is directing “God of Carnage.”

After being asked to direct this fall, Waye recommended the show because not many theater groups have done it.

“It seemed like a good fit for the venue and the people we could cast,” said Waye, who works in the IT department at Carmel Clay Public Library. “Just seemed like a natural fit for me because it’s a comedy and I like comedies more.”

This is the seventh play Waye has directed for

the Off-Main Street Players.

“Whatever I’m doing is my most favorite at the time,” he said. “If I’m acting, I really enjoy that. If I’m directing, that seems to be what I really like.”

Carmel resident Tanya Haas, 42, said she considers it more of a drama with comic elements.

“This is the first time in a very long time I’ve had a fairly dramatic role, so it’s been a different experience,” Haas said. “The whole play is a roller-coaster ride.”

Haas is a part-time middle school drama teacher at Midwest Academy in Carmel.

“I just enjoy getting out of my regular life and getting to pretend to be other people for a while,” she said. “It’s the only thing I do just for me.”

Dr. Larry Adams, a Brownsburg resident who has his family medicine practice in Zionsville, has a similar reason for acting.

“It’s that opportunity to step outside of yourself and put everything else behind you,” said Adams, who began acting in 1988. “You can’t take the rest of your life on stage. You can be that different person for a short period of time.”

Adams, 54, followed in the acting footsteps of his mother, Jean Adams, a well-known Indianapolis-area community theater actress.

“My mother started doing it after my father passed away and I watched her and thought, ‘That seems like fun, I’ll try it,’” Adams said. “By that time I was in residency. I was a latecomer.”

For 51-year-old Zionsville resident Kirk Horn, this play is a new acting experience.

“I have to come to practice every night,” said Horn, an attorney with Mandel Horn law firm in Carmel. “I’m never off stage. I’ve never had an experience like this before. If you screw up, it snowballs, I assume. I’m just kidding.”

Koleszar, a 36-year-old Lebanon resident who has been acting for about 20 years, said it is fun working with a small cast.

“It’s a big change from working with a big, full musical,” Koleszar said. “I do a lot of musicals as well. I like a variety but I enjoy comedies the most.”

The task of building a thematically cohesive program is all part of the musical adventure Charles P. Conrad enjoys as diconcert rector of the Indiana Wind Symphony. Before a note is sounded, public performances by the all-volunteer concert band are designed to help sell themselves.

“We’re always thinking what would be a good theme and what would work musically,” Conrad said in a phone interview. “Not every piece has to fit the theme, and some are tangential to it.

If you try too hard, all of a sudden a program doesn’t work.” He’s been crafting themes and preparing music for the ensemble’s concerts since founding it in 1997.

“Summon the Heroes,” the concert Conrad will conduct at the Palladium on Nov. 15, is built around a piece of the same title that film composer John Williams wrote for the U.S. Marine Band. It was conceived for the centennial of modern Olympic Games in Atlanta. The 1996 work was recently released for general performance, so Conrad snatched it up for the Indiana Wind Symphony.

Different kinds of heroes are part of this concert’s focus. Mark Camphouse’s “Movement for Rosa” honors Rosa Parks, whose refusal to move to the back of the bus in 1955 started one of the triggering actions of the civil rights movement, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The composer

Great music for orchestra has been transcribed for band, and one such piece in particular fits this month’s theme. Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture “works extremely well in band transcriptions,” Conrad said. “The themes are in the winds and the piece is based on melodies that don’t get too hard.” The work is the most frequently performed piece of incidental music the German composer wrote to accompany a play about a 16th–century Dutch nobleman who opposed Spanish repression of his homeland.

The heroic theme is also carried out by the “Colonel Bogey March,” which became familiar to a wide public as whistled by British soldier-captives in the 1957 World War II movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai.”

Braving cold weather

John Coleman, meteorologist and co-founder of The Weather Channel, told a TV audience the last week of October that he doesn’t believe man-made global warming is real and laughed out loud at anyone who buys into what Al Gore is selling. He gave some convincing numbers about the increasing ice cap and polar bear population.

Whether you agree with him or not it still makes sense to be a conservation minded tailgater and use some recycled items at your party that conserve your time and money.

Over the years we’ve learned some lessons that are worth passing on. Each time we brought chili to a game, it stained our serve and seal (Tupperware) containers. Also every time we packed a cooler, we needed to put in an expensive block or bag of ice to keep things cold.

Late in the season, when it gets really cold, we needed to build a fire using lighter fluid or fire starters. Here are some recycling tips that make sense: • Save your plastic, gallon-size, ice cream containers (tubs). On game day, you can pack them with your favorite chili and after serving the chili, dispose of the tubs, stain and all.

• Save those half gallon or 1.75 liter plastic juice or milk containers. The day before the game, fill them an inch or two short of their top with water and then freeze them.

These replace blocks of ice.

• Today’s refrigerators make ice. Don’t buy a bag of ice cubes, just empty the ice cubes from the fridge into gallon-sized serve-andseal bags and throw them into your cooler for cooling and ice for drinks.

• At your tailgate have a paper grocery bag for burnable trash like paper and cardboard.

Use this material to start and boost your fire.

• Make your own fire pit with a metal garbage can lid (or other disc) and three or four heat absorbing bricks or stones as non-

School of Rock students on tour For two-and-a-half years, since their opening, School of Rock Carmel has given local kids the opportunity to perform live on stage concert in front of hundreds of adoring fans around the greater Indianapolis area; this month, they’re furthering the dream of young musicians by touring to Cleveland, Ohio to perform with two other School of Rock locations at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

School of Rock’s focus is on community as well as music, both within their local walls as well as within the larger School of Rock network of over 140 schools worldwide. Tours that span different cities and states are exciting and unique opportunities for student musicians, but are part of what makes School of Rock unique. School of Rock Carmel students have traveled to Milwaukee twice to perform at Summerfest, the largest music festival in the world, and the Cleveland School of Rock’s

house band performed with Carmel students in July at Wolfies Grill in Carmel.

“This is an opportunity for these students to take their music on the road, to meet and perform with School of Rock students from different cities, to get experience touring, and to get a chance to perform at a premier venue completely dedicated to recognizing the world’s best musical acts and performers,” said the Carmel School of Rock’s general manager Elyse Causey.

Students performing on this tour from Carmel are members of the House Band, Carmel’s auditioned student band made up of some of the best student musicians and role models at School of Rock Carmel. Seven of these House Band members will be performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nov. 15; they will trade stage time with members from the House Bands from School of Rock Mason (Cincinnati-area school) and the Schools of Rock Strongsville, Rocky River and Highland Heights (Cleveland-area schools).

A: Tony this is a great question. The important thing here is that your sunglasses have 100 percent UV protection. As you probably know there are three types of UV: UVA, UVB and UVC. All are harmful to the eye and that damage is cumulative over time. But most sunglasses don’t specify type. So, just make sure yours states 100 percent UV when you purchase them. Now, a couple of things to keep in mind. The cheaper sunglasses typically have a spray-on UV coating. That just means that every time you clean them some of that protection is wearing off. Therefore, you need to replace them more often. The cheaper ones also don’t tend to keep their shape as long and the optics are not as good. An important note is that it is better to wear no sunglasses than to wear sunglasses without 100 percent UV protection. The tint opens up the pupils and then more harmful UV rays enter the eye.

For years, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the television host and former “Survivor” contestant, couldn’t figure out what made her wellness sick with unrelenting bloating, cramps and diarrhea.

Symptoms vary widely, says Dr. Jianmin Tian, a gastroenterologist with St.Vincent Medical Group.

Patients may experience recurring abdominal

pain, diarrhea, anemia, and delayed development in children. Infertility, joint pain, skin rash and fatigue also plague some patients, who tend to fall into four categories: • Classic: Characterized by classic symptoms like diarrhea, malabsorption, weight loss, and abdominal discomfort.

• Atypical: May have minor intestinal symptoms, but may also have anemia, dental enamel defects, osteoporosis, arthritis, increased liver enzyme levels, neurological symptoms or infertility.

• Silent: Symptom-free, but abnormalities show up in blood test and small intestine biopsy.

• Latent: Also symptom-free, but only detectable in blood tests.

“Unfortunately, classic cases are the tip of the iceberg,” Tian said. Many cases are difficult to diagnose, partly because symptoms mimic other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Type 1 diabetics and people with a first-degree relative with CD are at higher risk. Otherwise, the general population has approximately a onein-140 chance of developing CD. Once diagnosed, a lifelong gluten-free diet is the only treatment. The Celiac Disease Foundation (www.celiac.org) has more information.

Kroger Central Division will temporarily close its store at 1217 Rangeline Road in Carmel for 16 weeks starting in early February. The retail temporary closure will allow a major renovation and expansion of the store into a flagship, upscale Kroger store unique in the state of Indiana. The total investment will exceed $10 million and the store will be expanded by 18,235 square feet to 80,677 square feet.

“Renovating the Carmel location on Range Line Road into an upscale flagship store is perfectly in line with its location so close to our new downtown at City Center. It will provide the residents there, in the Arts & Design District and eventually Midtown with a convenient high quality grocery and a place to grab a quick healthy meal. The fact that many of these residents are now in walking distance from the store is an added bonus to a healthy lifestyle,” stated Mayor Jim Brainard.

Kroger will operate a smaller store, with limited food and general merchandise, at an adjacent store previously occupied by Walgreens.

A temporary, full-service pharmacy will be set up next to the former Walgreens building. Pharmacy operating hours will not change.

During the remodel and temporary closing, the adjacent Turkey Hill convenience store, which is managed by a different Kroger operating division,

will remain open.

All associates at the Carmel location will continue working at nearby Kroger locations during the store closing, at their usual compensation and benefit levels.

Kroger Central Division President Jeff Burt said they will push through a 16-week construction phase to get the project complete.

Key features of the expanded store will include: • New food bistro, including sushi and madeto-order chef stations • An expanded wine and liquor shop • Community kitchen on the mezzanine, to be used for customer and community education events • Murray’s Cheese shop • Starbucks • An expanded pharmacy and a new Little Clinic • Upstairs and outdoor cafés with WiFi As the store’s reopening date approaches, Kroger will use the second floor of the Turkey Hill store as a hiring center. In addition to keeping all current Carmel associates, the company will hire up to 100 new associates.

Changing pebbles to pearls

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com After being laid off from her job of 28 years at an insurance company nearly a year ago, Sherry Kancs contemplated her next now open move with her recently retired friend Dace Abeltins.

“We talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up,” said the 56-year-old Kancs with a laugh. “We both always wanted to open a boutique or resale store. So we did.”

The women, friends for nearly 20 years, recently opened Pebbles to Pearls Boutique, a store with vintage items, in Westfield on 108 E. Main St. The store had its official grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 25.

“Dace has done an excellent job with the staging of the room,” said Kancs, a Carmel resident.

“We are a store full of very unique vintage and antique items, some retro. Our products change quite a bit. Most of the items are ours that we’ve shopped for and brought, but we have a few consignment items now.”

The store had a soft opening during the Grand Junction Derby and Street Festival on Oct. 4.

While Kancs has not worked in retail before, Abeltins has 30-plus years of experience. Abeltins, 66, started worked for L.S. Ayres (now Macy’s) in high school. She also worked for now-defunct Block’s in Indianapolis and some smaller shops in Indiana. She also worked for

Bloomingdale’s in New York for a few years. She was working for the Indiana Supreme Court when she retired.

“I was looking for something to reinvent myself and this came along and it’s been wonderful,” said Abeltins, who lives in downtown Indianapolis. “I think Westfield is a very up-andcoming area.”

Kancs is optimistic, too.

Cycling, a new concept

Rock. Ride. is based on the concept of her business at 14660 Herriman Blvd., now open Suite 700, Noblesville.

“We want to rally people together for motivation and inspiration, rock out to good music and ride using outdoor best practices inside,” she said.

Herrmann said she found indoor cycling seven years ago.

“I’m a big runner – long distance, marathons – but I was injured all the time,” she said. “I was hooked (on cycling) from my first class.”

Herrmann went from dedicated participant to instructor and has three certifications since she began teaching four years ago. Rally. Rock. Ride. has eight instructors with more than 50 years of experience.

“We want every ride to be a quality ride for people. We want to help improve health and fitness and performance in general,” she said.

Herrmann said cycling also is a way for athletes to keep their cardio up while rehabbing injuries or during the off-season.

“I found I became a better runner,” she said.

“You can use it to help all kinds of disciplines.”

Indoor cycling is similar to outdoor riding, where riders simulate hills, flat land and roads – with the safety of no traffic or construction.

said. “We set the ride to motivational music and instructors lead you on your journey. The room has ambient light to focus your mind and body on connecting with the ride.”

Herrmann said 45- to 90-minute classes are available and space is limited to 21 people.

“It’s a program that allows any age to do it and be effective,” Herrmann said. “You can have a beginner right next to an advanced rider. All classes are suited for all fitness levels.”

I may have swooned a little but. Sneaking into the language

Commentary by Jordan Fischer

Question: “I was corrected the other day at the office when I used the word ‘snuck.’ My coworker insists that the grammar guy correct past tense of ‘sneak’ is ‘sneaked’ – but that sounds so weird to me. Would you really say, ‘I sneaked out of the house to see a movie?’

Can you settle this debate for us?”

Answer: I’m afraid you’ve stumbled into one of the great grammar debates of our time – one that pits us against our fine British friends across the pond.

Right out the gate, I will say this: “Sneaked” is the formal, standard and “most correct” past tense of “sneak.” I don’t have any Ian Fleming novels lying around, but if I did, I would bet the word “snuck” doesn’t appear on a single page.

That is, unless Mr. Fleming’s works go through an American copy editor these days.

The Oxford Dictionaries describe the origins of “snuck” as dialectical (U.S.) and non-standard.

Merriam-Webster – the American company, mind you – takes a much harsher tone, saying that “snuck” first appeared as a “dialectical and probably uneducated form.” Ouch.

Both Oxford and Merriam-Webster go on to recognize that, however inauspicious its beginnings, “snuck” has gone mainstream. “’Snuck’ has risen to the status of standard and to approximate equality with ‘sneaked,’” Merriam-Webster says. Oxford notes that there is now evidence of “snuck” being used by British speakers as well.

At the end of the day, I would probably lose my unofficial Grammar Guy badge if I did not reaffirm “sneaked” as the standard past tense of “sneak.” That being said, don’t be afraid to use “snuck” in less formal contexts and with our nation’s trademark stubborn pride.

Notre Dame: Famous supporters Commentary by Don Knebel The Cathedral of Notre Dame is perhaps the most famous church in the world. Its current configuration has links to an ancient Travel vision and a famous novel.

In 1160 the Bishop of Paris wanted a cathedral befitting the most populous city in Europe. For the location of his new cathedral he selected the Île de la Cité, an island in the Seine, previously home to a temple to Jupiter and an early church. Pope Alexander III laid the foundation stone in 1163 and workers began constructing the east end, surrounding the altar, so Mass could be said during construction of the remaining sections. As the eastern walls designed to accommodate large altar windows rose higher, they began to flex outwardly. The solution included buttresses extending from upper points on the walls to the ground, an idea suggested by the vision of a restored Temple reported in the Book of Ezekiel but not employed previously.

When the cathedral was finally completed in 1345, it was 420 feet long and had massive twin towers, each 230 feet tall. Colorfully painted gargoyles directed rainwater away from the walls.

Notre Dame’s flying buttresses, pointed arches, and rose windows became the model for sub-

sequent French cathedrals, a style Renaissance writers pejoratively labeled “Gothic.”

During the French Revolution, opponents of the Catholic Church obliterated visible symbols of Christianity and converted Notre Dame into a “Temple of Reason.” Guillotine-inspired revolutionaries beheaded statues of Biblical kings of Judah, mistaking them for despised French kings. In 1801, Notre Dame was again usable as a church but was in a serious state of disrepair. Victor Hugo wrote “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” in 1830 to call attention to the value of Gothic architecture and the urgency of rescuing the cathedral. The popular novel spurred a controversial 20-year restoration that added a spire but left the famous gargoyles unpainted.

Notre Dame is the most popular attraction in Paris, welcoming twice as many visitors as the Eiffel Tower. Far fewer people visit the National Museum of the Middle Ages, where the stone heads of the cathedral’s decapitated kings, rediscovered in 1977, are on display.

Cabinet modifications, warm colors transform a kitchen Commentary by Larry Greene

EXISTING KITCHEN: Located in the Bay Hill subdivision in Carmel, these homeowners were feeling cramped in their blueprint for 20-year-old kitchen. “Not improvement only did the kitchen not fit our personal style, it also lacked storage space and did not provide enough seating.” The existing cabinets were still in good shape, so the owners decided to keep them.

CABINET MODIFICATIONS: “We desperately needed a larger fridge; however, the existing cabinets were custom built around the old fridge.” To accommodate the larger French door style refrigerator, the existing cabinetry was modified. The cabinets and double ovens that originally sat to the left of the fridge were relocated. A custom 12-inch pull out cabinet was installed adding dedicated storage space for spices and cooking oils. Moldings and new hardware was installed for a custom look. The original white cabinets were then painted a creamy white to add warmth.

EXPANDED ISLAND: To give the homeowners additional countertop space and seating, the original u-shaped island and bulkhead were removed and replaced with a new island stretching almost 10 feet in length. The island was constructed using semi-custom cabinetry in a contrasting chocolate finish including two deco-

rative pendants in a bronze finish.

BEVERAGE STATION: “Being entertainers, it was important to have a dedicated area for guests to grab drinks without interrupting the cook or making an inconvenient walk to the garage.” To accomplish this goal, the previous family room off the kitchen was converted into a beverage station. The chocolate finish of the cabinetry and matching granite countertops give the beverage station a consistent look with the kitchen island.
