Trails create ‘waterfront’ property

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The dots are finally starting to connect, and they’re creating a beautiful picture for Carmel residents.

TRANSPORTATION At least, that’s how those working to build Carmel’s biking infrastructure see it.

The city has completed more than 200 miles of bike trails and lanes, installing approximately 30 miles within the last two years.

“For a long time, we had disconnected infrastructure, but over the last two years everything’s started to connect, which made it more viable for people to be able to get to where they want to go safely,” said David Littlejohn, the city’s alternative transportation coordinator.

Littlejohn, who has been in his role since 2007, said he constantly talks to people who moved to Carmel or decided to stay in the city because of its expanding trail network. And he believes the best is yet to come.

Carmel’s ‘waterfront’ The city is in the process of expanding the Monon Trail between City Center Drive and Main Street, a $23 million project that includes new dedicated lanes for cycling, sidewalks, two-way streets and green spaces. Littlejohn said he’s not aware of any other communities using a bike trail as the center of a placemaking project to lure new businesses and residents.

“A lot of economic development goes around highway infrastructure, trains or water, and this is totally focused on a bike path,” Littlejohn said. “The Monon Trail at one point was just a 12-foot strip of asphalt. Now, it’s creating this cool district.”

Kevin Whited, Carmel’s transportation development coordinator, said studies have shown that property values rise within a half-mile of an urban trail. In Carmel, a city without mountains or beaches, it’s a huge draw for people coming to the area.

“That’s our waterfront,” Whited said. “We’ve created this waterfront.”

New trails planned to open in 2018 include along 96th Street between Michigan and Ditch roads, Shelborne Road between 96th and 116th streets and Ditch Road between 96th and 106th streets. Next year, trails are planned on 126th Street between Keystone and Hazel Dell park-

‘A CULTURE SHIFT’ Kevin Whited joined the City of Carmel in August as its first transportation development coordinator.

The Carmel City Council approved the new position — originally proposed as a bicycle administrator — in February after much debate about the scope of the job.

Whited, an Indianapolis Whited resident, previously worked for a railway and as a transportation planner.

He was the transportation demand management coordinator and bicycle manager at Indiana University when the City of Carmel contacted him about the job. He said he loved working in Bloomington but was ready to end the lengthy commute.

Now, he’s one of a growing number of people using the trails to bike to work in Carmel.

“A lot of it is a culture shift. You can get the infrastructure down, and that will get a certain amount of people to ride,” he said.

“Then, members of the community start using this infrastructure and it has this trickledown effect.” ways, 136th Street between Range Line Road and Keystone Parkway and 116th Street between Michigan and Towne roads.

The right message In addition to laying new trails, the city is working to encourage people to use them.

Last year, it launched Bike Carmel events to introduce riders to routes between 10 and 25 miles along trails and urban corridors.

This year the city introduced a bicycling mascot, Spokes. The friendly dog promotes bicycling at Bike Carmel rides, Carmel Clay Schools, CarmelFest and many other events. City of Carmel Community Relations Specialist Kayla Arnold said the city is trying to teach young riders the value of bicycling in hopes that it will create healthy lifelong habits.

“Sometimes when adults are talking at kids they don’t necessarily absorb it, so we’re trying to add a new element to make it a little more interactive and fun for the kids,” Arnold said.

Guilty plea in stolen bulldog case

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A Carmel man has pleaded guilty to theft for stealing a bulldog that went missing UPDATE last year.

Reid Albrecht, 22, pleaded guilty Oct. 23 to the level six felony that carries six months to 2 1/2 years in Albrecht prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Sentencing is set for Nov. 21 in Hamilton County.

Gus, an English bulldog who knew how to skateboard, went missing from his Carmel home on Oct. 4, 2017. Albrecht was arrested for the crime six months later.

More than a year after he went missing, Gus has not been found, and his whereabouts are unknown.

His family has provided updates on the Facebook page Gus is Missing, which has nearly 3,300 likes. The Gus page has not been updated since the guilty plea. The family declined to comment before the sentencing hearing.

CHS wins cross country title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Balance proved to be the difference for the Carmel High School boys cross country team.

The Greyhounds ACHIEVEMENT won for the second consecutive season and fifth time in seven years at the Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Cross Country State Finals Oct. 27 in Terre Haute. Third-ranked Carmel won with 136 points, edging out No. 1 Cathedral with 146.

Cathderal’s Cole Hocker captured the individual state title. Senior Calvin Bates, Carmel’s top finisher, was 19th overall and 11th among members of teams competing

for the title.

“We made up the gap with our two, three, four runners and then our fifth runners finished right next to each other,” Carmel coach Colin Altevogt said.

Carmel junior Grant Moon placed 33rd. Junior Ben Johnson didn’t run in the regional and semistate but placed 40th.

Other Carmel finishers were junior Will Murphy, 46th, and senior Cameron Harless, 68th.

“The conditions were muddy, which slowed the times down by probably 25 to 30 seconds for most guys,” Altevogt said.

“The Greyhounds will now compete in the Nov. 11 Nike Midwest Regional in Terre Haute.

Defense seals state title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com To say the Carmel High School girls soccer team’s defense was stingy would be an understatement.

The Greyhounds (20-1-2) SOCCER had 18 shutouts en route to a Class 3A state championship. Carmel beat Homestead 2-1 in overtime Oct. 27 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.

This was the Greyhounds’ 10th Indiana High School Athletic Association girls soccer state title under Coach Frank Dixon and the first since 2011.

“We’ve had good teams since (2011) but

never quite put everything together, and we were able to this year,” said Dixon.

Junior Kelsie James, who has committed to Valparaiso, scored both goals in the state title game to give her a team-high 11 goals.

“We have an unselfish offense,” James said. “We all love to have each other score.

No one person wants to be the hero all the time.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Baker delivered 17 of the 18 shutouts.

“We’re glad to have her back for two seasons,” Dixon said.

The Greyhounds will lose eight seniors, including four starters.

CHS senior to be on ‘Jeopardy!’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School senior Audrey Satchivi has been a loyal “Jeopardy!” watcher since she was in first grade.

“I really liked the GAME SHOW show, but I never really expected to be on the show,” Satchivi said.

She surprised herself. Satchivi, 17, was selected for the annual Teen Tournament and will appear on the Nov. 9 episode. Game show contestants aren’t permitted to discuss how they did until the episode airs.

She said she will likely have a watch party at CHS because so many friends want to watch it with her.

“It was an amazing experience,” Satchivi said. “I got to meet Alex Trebek, which was awesome. He was a really cool guy, very down to earth. He’s the first celebrity I’ve ever met.”

Satchivi was one of 15 finalists, selected from a pool of 1,000, then 250 high school students.

“I would watch the Teen Tournament and say these questions are easy,” Satchivi said. “(My mother) said, ‘You know a lot. You should try out and make some money.’ I decided to try it, and I’m happy I did.”

After her online test, Satchivi traveled to San Francisco to audition. She then got word she was selected and the show was filmed in late August in Los Angeles.

“It was fun because there were a lot of kids like me who love trivia like myself and were willing to challenge themselves,” Satchivi said. “It was awesome to be in an environment where everyone was kind of like me.”

CHS junior a festival queen

By Desiree Williams news@currentincarmel.com After eight years of competing in pageants and acquiring more experience in the performing arts, AlexACHIEVEMENT andria Audritsh was crowned queen for the first time. Audritsh, 16, competed in the Indy International Festival Pageant in September as a representative of Indianapolis Chinese Performing Arts, Inc. “Very few people get the chance to do pageants, let alone become queen, so you take on a very big responsibility for not only being a role model for every other girl who competes in pageants, but also a role model for everyone around you,” Audritsh said.

As the 2019 queen, Audritsh will become a representative of the festival and her organization, ICPAI. The Indy International Festival, hosted by the Nationalities Council of Indiana, is a weekend-long event featuring dancing, food, entertainment, art and more from different cultures from around the world. The 2018 festival is scheduled for Nov. 8-10 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

no stranger to the spotlight. She has been ballroom dancing and performing Chinese folk dancing since age 5. She began singing at age 8. She also has auditioned for TV shows and modeling agencies and performed in school and community theater.

To participate in the Indy International Festival Pageant, contestants must be at least 16 and be a representative of a cultural organization. Contestants perform in the categories of formal wear, talent, traditional wear and interview. For her talent, Audritsh sang a Chinese song.

Combellick wins pageant debut

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Catelyn Combellick was well prepared for her first foray into the pageant world.

The Carmel High ACHIEVEMENT School sophomore took public speaking lessons and received instruction from peers on how to walk.

“I was so nervous,” Combellick said. “I tried not to let it show. I think the fourminute interview at the beginning was the most nerve-racking. It was just me and two panels of judges. I had no idea what to expect and what kind of questions they were going to ask. After that I was so ready to walk on stage and do everything.”

Combellick must have done just fine, because she was named the 2019 Miss Indiana Teen USA Oct. 21 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

The 2019 date for the Miss Teen USA pageant date hasn’t been set.

“I was convincing myself I had to get a year under my belt before I could actually be competitive (in pageants),” Combellick said. “I had no idea this would happen.”

said the experience taught her a lot about herself.

“There was another side of me I’ve never seen before,” she said. “This confident, independent woman I had no idea was me.”

Combellick has been training with a national public speaking expert to improve her confidence.

“Once I realized I can be myself and that’s enough, it helped me get over that fear,” Combellick said. “I love talking to people now.”

Dog adoption event planned

By Maria Cook news@currentincarmel.com Local real estate group Coldwell Banker Kaiser is partnering with several animal rescues and Carmel businesses to PETS bring a Homes For Dogs adoption event to Carmel from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at Club Canine, 622 S. Range Line Road.

According to event co-planner Sara Myers, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Kaiser, the real estate group will sponsor a portion of adoptions.

“Because we have several rescues, they all charge a variety of adoption fees,” she said. “All of our individual agents are contributing, and we are trying to pool that and cover as many adoption fees as possible.”

Rescue groups such as Canine Castaways and Our Little Piece of Heaven will provide adoptable dogs. Event co-planner Lisa Modisett, associate broker at Coldwell Banker Kaiser, said local businesses are donating items for a raffle. Items such as gift baskets and pet food have been collected from Club Canine, Hollywood Feed, Love Af’Hair Design Studio, Union Brewing Company and Sugar Creek Winery.

Gray Martens has a host of reasons for his keen interest in World War I, not the least of which are his FUNDRAISER family’s ties to “the war to end all wars.”

“On my dad’s side, there was a German artilleryman who was killed in the final days of the war,” said Martens, a Carmel High School sophomore. “On my mom’s side, there was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marines who fought in the battle of Belleau Wood and took 172 German prisoners.”

Moved by his personal connections to World War I (1914-1918), Martens is drawing attention to the oft-overlooked conflict with a special project honoring Hamilton County and Indiana residents who served during the “Great War.” In collaboration with the 80 members of the CHS Art Club, Martens has created a display of 300 red poppies — inspired by the popular World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” — to adorn the school’s library during the first two weeks of this month. The poppies represent the 3,709 Indiana military personnel who died during the war.

YoungLife to host free banquet Carmel YoungLife will host a banquet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Carmel High School’s Freshman Center cafeteria to promote the organization in the PROFILE Carmel community.

The banquet is free and open to the public. It will include speakers from the YoungLife program, a dessert bar and coffee catered by A Cup Above Coffee Catering.

YoungLife committee member Beth King, who helped organize the event, said it will serve as an informational night for Carmel parents and middle school and high school students considering the program. It will also serve as a fundraiser since attendees can make donations during the banquet.

“The goal (of the banquet) is just to share what YoungLife is as an organization and what they do for the kids in our commu-

nity,” King said.

YoungLife is a faith-based nonprofit that aims to build relationships between students and adult leaders, who encourage and support them through their teen years.

It organizes small- and large-group activities such as games, music and bonfires.

“The money that is made basically will help continue the programs that are in place for the high schoolers and for the middle schoolers because it costs money to do what they do,” King said.

She said the main purpose of the banquet is to encourage students to try YoungLife.

“There’s a lot of kids in the community who don’t go to church with their families, and that’s fine, but this is a fabulous outlet for them to experience a Christian environment and see if it’s something that they’re interested in where they can gain something from it,” King said.

Asherwood Estate auction items likely to draw worldwide attention

“Guernsey’s has been known for doing many different kinds of events, from the world’s largest auction, the SS United States, the ocean liner, to the first auction of artwork from the Soviet Union Ettinger during the Cold War, to the John F. Kennedy, the Beatles and Elvis (Presley) auctions and so on,” Ettinger said.

“Each auction has a life of its own.”

The New York auction house will conduct the sale of the contents of Asherwood, the massive Carmel estate donated by philanthropist Bren Simon to support the Great American Songbook Foundation. Simon, who now lives in Colorado, is the widow of shopping mall magnate Mel Simon.

“Make no mistake about it, this is a spectacular setting and should be a wonderful event,” Ettinger said. “It’s a big deal. It would be a big deal if this were in Beverly Hills or outside London or outside New York City. It’s a very, very beautiful and prestigious property. This is a very important auction, so it’s an honor to be doing it.”

The public will be able to view auction items during previews scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 10, 11 and 16. The auction is set for 11 a.m. Nov. 17 and noon Nov. 18, with global online bidding taking place at liveauctioneers.com and invaluable.com.

Tickets for the previews are $25, with one ticket valid for all days and events.

“Guernsey’s is not taking a dime from the tickets. It’s all going to the Songbook Foundation,” Ettinger said.

Approximately 1,000 lots are for sale, including hundreds of pieces of antique and custom furniture, décor items, works of art and imported rugs. Among the items is a large collection of antique books.

The green chandeliers are estimated between $60,000 to $80,000 each. A birthday cake crystal chandelier is valued between $30,000 and $50,000.

antiques with handsomely crafted contemporary pieces.

“They were made for Asherwood, for the most part, by leading craftsmen,” Ettinger said. “There aren’t many pieces that someone went out to a furniture store and bought. It’s pretty remarkable that an estate of this magnitude was given outright to a nonprofit organization.”

Ettinger said it took two weeks for eight people to catalogue the items in the 50,000-square foot mansion, guest house and golf clubhouse. The books are being sold as a collection.

The estate includes closets full of china for all occasions, to be sold in sets for dinner service.

Ettinger said this is an unreserved auction, meaning there are no pre-set minimums.

“In many high-end auctions, there are items that have minimum reserve,” Ettinger said. “If the item is estimated to be worth $2,000 or $3,000, in most cases there is

a confidential reserve. In that example, it would probably be $1,600 to $1,700.”

However, Ettinger said not having a reserve makes for a more exciting auction.

“I’m sure there are people that have dreamt about owning something from this (estate),” Ettinger said. “Maybe because they want something beautiful or they want something from the legendary Asherwood.”

Ettinger said potential buyers shouldn’t be scared away by estimates.

“Auctions are not predictable events,” he said. “Some go above the estimate and some go below. Some people will walk away and say, ‘I got a bargain.’ They will hopefully get enjoyment out of whatever they buy, but they should take comfort that the money is being put to good use. That’s a win-win situation.”

THE FOUNDATION’S HEFTY DECISION

Songbook Foundation Executive Director Chris Lewis said there was much discussion on how the donation of Asherwood could benefit the nonprofit even before Bren Simon’s donation of the estate was announced in January.

Lewis “We did a lot of due diligence before even accepting the gift,” Lewis said. “There were no restrictions. All she said is she wanted us to use it however would advance our mission. We put an oversight committee together. We weighed dozens and dozens of ideas with business analysis, studies and data, everything from (creating) a museum to running an event center or a golf course.”

The Songbook Foundation is seeking a building for its collection of memorabilia, but studies show a museum was impractical at Asherwood.

“We brought in museum experts, and they looked at everything from parking to access roads to traffic patterns and the retrofitting,” Lewis said. “To turn this into a museum, there would have to be significant work done. It’s so beautiful and pristine and elegant, it would be a shame to gut the main floor.”

Another idea, Lewis said, was to turn it into a hotel, but it only has seven bedrooms.

Although the sale of the contents is set, the Songbook Foundation will accept proposals from real estate brokers about the best way to market and sell the 107-acre property, which includes two golf courses. Simon estimated the donated estate at $30 million.

LETTER Central Indiana residents are missing out

Commentary by Terry Anker Perhaps we’ve already heard it.

Maybe a passing billboard caught our eye. Or, it could have been a television commercial that planted the suggestion. For the intelligent and erudite, it might have been a well-placed advertisement in this very newspaper that brought it to your attention. Regardless of the genesis, it seems difficult to believe that it is time for another election.

On Nov. 6, many of us will march to the polls. Millions already have made the trip through the newly instituted early voting in addition to the time-tested standard of advanced absentee suffrage. Good, and add this voice to the many that urge us to exercise the right. If you haven’t yet done it, drop this paper and vote – now. For those of us who have, well done.

Still, millions will skip the ballot box entirely. Some for reasons that may seem good enough but most for convenience or lack of will. Sure, politics is more than a bit unpleasant. It always has been. Fantasy writer and would-be Minnesotan office-bearer Will Shetterly once correctly remarked that “politics is a dirty business, but if you do not do politics, politics will be done to you.”

In this acrimonious electorate, there are those who have decided to take a break by working to avoid participation in the whole circus.

If we don’t vote, for any candidate, how can they be responsible for the behavior of those elected? If we feel uninformed, how can we make an informed choice? Hmm. Can one be a conscientious objector to elections? Perhaps. Yet, isn’t a nonvote, in most cases, the same as a consent to the rule of the minority?

Our resistance is registered as an advantage to the largest of the sets of those motivated to participate.

There is no “opt out.”

Reelin’ in the years Commentary by Danielle Wilson My baby is 20 today. Twenty! I think I’m in shock. I am way too young to have a 20-yearold and he’s way too young to HUMOR be 20. Another startling development? Yesterday, my twins were accepted to college. What the what!

How is this happening? When I asked a colleague, he said, “The days go by slowly, but the years? The years fly by.” Preach.

I remember when I had three under 3.

I’d wake up at the crack of dawn, already anxious about what kind of parenting hell I’d have to survive. Physically exhausting, emotionally challenging and psychologically punishing – each day seemed interminable.

Odds were good that I wouldn’t eat anything other than a stray Gerber puff and a toasted-hours-ago bagel, and that at some point I’d be exposed to a biochemical substance that required a Clorox hose-down and several shouted expletives. By nightfall, I’d usually collapse into bed, say a quick prayer

that everyone would sleep through the night and fall into a fitful repose only to do it all again come sunrise.

I can recall with vivid detail harrowing trips to the Fishers YMCA, the Children’s Museum and a particularly controversial depantsing at the Carmel Library that nearly earned me a story-hour lifetime ban. I remember individual playdates, specific neighborhood walks and even the guest lists for all the birthday parties. But I can’t tell you where all the years went. I cannot remember when my two sons suddenly needed razors or when my daughters began wearing makeup. I literally have no idea when my kids grew up.

Seriously, where has the time gone? My baby is 20! Peace out.

Editor, I am so disappointed with central Indiana and Carmel in particular for its lack of support for a local nonprofit organization that brings a variety of great music to the stage at the Palladium.

On Sept. 23 at the Palladium venue of the Center for the Performing Arts, central Indiana patrons of the Indiana Wind Symphony under the direction of Dr. Charles P. Conrad and Nathan C. Voges were treated to the celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. The concert included songs from “West Side Story” like “Tonight” sung by Jessamyn Anderson, soprano, and Joshua Carswell, tenor. The two were great singing together as well as in solo performances for other songs.

Only some 370 patrons were treated to the above, while the rest of central Indiana missed out. The concert was wonderful, the singing was great. It was a special tribute that should not have been missed.

Central Indiana, we can do so much better in supporting the Indiana Wind Symphony.

If you have never heard an IWS concert in the acoustically perfect Palladium, you must attend the upcoming IWS concerts. The next IWS concert at the Palladium is at 3 p.m. Nov. 11. It is “In Flanders Fields: A World War 1 Centennial.” The concert contains works by John Phillip Sousa , George M. Cohan and Irving Berlin, to name just a few.

Come on, central Indiana and Carmel, let’s do better, come and support your local, all-volunteer musicians of the Indiana Wind Symphony. You will not believe your ears.

Long live coffee and debates Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just read on AOL that coffee first thing in the morning is bad for you. Hard to believe, isn’t it? No, not the cofHUMOR fee part — the fact I still have AOL. Apparently, you mess with your internal clock when you drink java on an empty stomach. That morning cup of joe can backfire and make you feel sleepier and grumpier. Has no one noticed this in 300 years?

Beneath that article was another medical finding, that women who keep quiet during an argument with their husbands are four times more likely to die from heart disease.

So, if I argue with my wife, I’m a boorish brute and a sexist. But if she wants to argue with me, she’ll live longer.

We have debated just about everything in our 39 years of marriage: How to eat popcorn; if it’s a good idea to nap in the middle of the day; how to load a dishwasher; and high flame or low for scrambled eggs. We once debated whether my mother knew how to raise children. I thought my mom had done a pretty good job, but Mary Ellen provided some very strong evidence to the contrary: Me!

I must not be a very good debater because I seem to lose the exchange, even if I have most facts in my favor. For example, I was pretty sure this past July was my wife’s 67th birthday, but she claimed she was only 66. I dug out her passport and birth certificate from our safe deposit box.

I tried to further bolster my position with this argument: “Mary Ellen, remember when we got married, we talked about there being a four-year difference in our age?”

“Oh, Dick, you’re living in the past. That was 38 years ago.”

I hope the two of us have many more heated discussions. I figure if she keeps arguing with me, she will stay healthy. And I’m still going to continue to drink huge amounts of coffee, even if it makes me sleepy and cantankerous.

I know you’re tempted to say, “Wouldn’t that be grounds for divorce?”

RememberStuff aids caregivers

A Columbus-based company, Eperture LLC, is aiming to assist those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and DEMENTIA their caregivers with a new technology called RememberStuff. Caregivers often answer the same questions repeatedly while caring for someone with memory issues.

The software is stored on an HP 800 series touchscreen computer and is updated remotely by a caregiver with the patient’s personal information, such as dates to remember, medications, favorite activities and contact information for family and friends.

“We have found that if you start creating that routine in writing after they go through one or two of the steps, it kind of triggers their memory,” said Mary Ellen Mullholand, president of Eperture LLC. TCC employees aim for top title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel residents Kim Miller and R.J. Zeph have formed a strong bond through the Best Buddies program.

Miller is director BEST BUDDIES of human resources for TCC, one of the nation’s largest Verizon authorized retailers. Through her company’s commitment to the Best Buddies jobs program, Zeph was hired as HR assistant. Best Buddies is a nonprofit dedicated to providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“R.J. is such an amazing person,” Miller said. “He’s a great friend and he’s a great worker. I appreciate having him on my team.

He has such a great attitude. I can’t image our team without him.”

Miller was nominated as a finalist for the Best Buddies Indiana Champion of the Year.

The purpose of the eight-week campaign is to raise awareness and funds for Best Buddies. The winner will be announced at the gala at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.

Pianist Jon Nakamatsu to make debut appearance with Carmel Symphony Orchestra

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Classical pianist Jon Nakamatsu’s journey has been one of perseverance.

Nakamatsu was a high MUSIC school German language teacher in California when he won the gold medal at Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 1997.

“It went by in a flash. I can’t believe it’s been (more than) 20 years,” Nakamatsu said. “It seems like a dream and I have to go back to my real job teaching school. I think it went by so fast. Right after the competition, the tour started three days later and because they (concerts) never stopped, it’s just been a whirlwind. In that time what transformed my life is being on stage constantly. I guess because I never knew if this career was going to happen for me, it’s kind of a pinch yourself moment when I get to walk on stage. That’s why coming to Carmel is so special. I never would have been there if it wouldn’t have been for an event 20 years ago.”

Nakamatsu will make his first appearance with Carmel Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. Nakamatsu, who has worked with CSO Music Director Janna Hymes previously with another orchestra, will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.”

“The wonderful moment for the audience is the 18th variation, which is the famous one,” Nakamatsu said. “Rachmaninoff is a love, of course. He wrote so many great things for the piano. I enjoy playing it every time. It’s one of those pieces where you always find something new, different and exciting. It reveals its secrets over time to us.”

Hymes stated Rachmaninoff has “a way of transporting listeners to another place with his work, and this piece is no exception, especially performed by Jon.” Nakamatsu compared winning the Van Cliburn competition to winning the musical equivalent of the Olympics.

“It’s every four years and basically can make your career,” Nakamatsu said. “But while the Olympics is often the height of an athlete’s career, for musicians, the competition is just the start. What winning does is allows you marketability. I was the same person the day before the competition as I was the day after, but suddenly I was set for a tour. It’s not the most glamorous entree into the world, but that’s how the business works. The competition sets up tours for you for a year or two years, but then you are on your own.”

The victory abruptly ended Nakamatsu’s teaching career.

“It was just a magical opportunity,” he said.

Nakamatsu worked with private teacher Marina Derryberry starting at age 6.

“She knew how to prepare someone for a competition 20 years later, so we had a long journey together and she was there when I won,” Nakamatsu said. “She was there when I first played at Carnegie Hall.

It was a huge common trip for both of us. I feel so lucky we had that.”

Derryberry died in 2009.

Before his Van Cliburn competition success, Nakamatsu had his ups and downs in competitions.

“You lose more than you win, that’s for sure,” he said. “There’s no chance of winning if you don’t risk losing. I’ve learned more from the things that I lost and the number of times people slammed doors in my face. It wasn’t just competitions. It was knocking on managements’ doors.

Having people tell you you’re not good enough, you’ll never make it, there’s no reason why you should be here. If you can weather that in any profession and get through the ugliness of that, I think you have a chance for something amazing.”

Kayla Brumet is cast as Carmen Bernstein in the musical mystery comedy.

“I like the role because it’s a new challenge because I’ve never played a character with this kind of personality,” Brumet said.

“She’s is in it for the money. In the show, I’m more bossy and take charge, which is

not normally how I am. (The character) has a bigger personality. It’s fun to embrace it.”

Alyssa Fuhrman said she loves her character Georgia Hendricks’ personality.

“She is more out there and she’s such a great person,” Fuhrman said.

Audrey Hockins plays Bambi Bernet.

“I like how it’s a show within a show because I’ve never done (that before),” Hockins said. “It’s cool to see how you should act on the stage and how you should act on stage as your character,” Hockins said.

Actress Megan Sikora, who played Bambi in the original Broadway production, visited the school to share advice in October. Sikora grew up in the Pittsburgh area with Carmel Middle’s choir teacher Trisha Scheidies.

“I’m kind of taking a bit of both, more from Gene Wilder, and putting it into my own kind of style,” O’Brien said. “I like to play funny characters and he’s lot of fun to be. He leads the narrative. It’s a role I was hoping for (when he auditioned).”

O’Brien said the main challenges are a lot of lines and choreography to memorize.

Clay Middle School will present “Willy Wonka Jr.” at 7 p.m. Nov. 15, 16 and 17. The musical is based on Roald Dahl’s book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

“It’s really fun singing the songs, and I like turning into a blueberry,” Iver said.

Iver has experience in the role having previously played Violet in a fifth-grade production at Prairie Trace Elementary.

Oakley’s Bistro

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 1464 W. 186th St., Indianapolis What to get: Tilapia Price: $25.75 Anna’s take: I sampled several dishes at Oakley’s Bistro on the north side of Indianapolis, all of which blew me away. The meal started with chef Steve Oakley’s famous shrimp corndog, the recipe that beat Bobby Flay last year in a 2017 Food Network episode of “Beat Bobby Flay.” The corndogs are al a carte at $2.75 each. They consist of cocktail-sized shrimp dipped in Oakley’s secret corndog batter and then fried. They are topped with bistro honey mustard, lending a sweet finish. The corndogs are topped with microgreens.

I then ordered the Lobster Waffle ( $14.75).

This was my favorite dish because of its taste and uniqueness. Essentially, the Lobster Waffle is exactly as it sounds – a basil roasted garlic waffle topped with lobster bites, sautéed zucchini, crispy leeks, mustard cream and tomato jam. It is an exotic twist on the traditional chicken-and-waffles dish, and it was phenomenal.

I then tried the Three Little Pigs ($16.75),

which are three small, individual pork dishes. One is a suckling pig croquette. Another is a country pate. The other is pork belly.

This dish was rich and decadent. If you look closely throughout the restaurant, pigs are everywhere in the decorations because chef Oakley loves to create pork-centered dishes.

For my entrée, I opted for the tilapia. The thick slab of mild fish is served with a side of butternut squash risotto inside an edible potato basket, adorned by pine nuts around the plate. The tilapia is seared and served atop tender baby vegetables and wholeroasted tomatoes. A tomato fennel fondue adds a bright flash of color.

Much of the menu changes seasonally, but a few items are staples, such as the Mac-N-Goat Cheese ($6.75), which is mixed with a pesto sauce. The goat cheese gives the dish a rich taste.

For dessert, my sweet tooth craved the chocolate whiskey cake ($8.75), served with caramelized bananas, chocolate mousse and a hearty scoop of Cookie Monster ice cream. It was a fantastic finisher.

Suggested pairings: If ordering the tilapia, pair it with a 2017 Joseph Drouhin Macon-Villages, a dry, white French Chardonnay that tastes minerally and crisp, not oaky and buttery. For the beer drinkers, order the Hefeweizen Grapefruit Bier Schofferhofer.

Focusing on the exterior, the goal was to make a more functional and appealing outdoor living space for the homeowners to entertain their family and friends.

1. One of the dramatic changes came from replacing the deck with more durable Trex composite decking, railings, lighting and rain-escape system.

These materials are easier for the homeowner to maintain.

2. A new covered porch roof was extended to cover part of the upper deck and a new screened porch was added.

3. The new custom exterior staircase is the focal point of the space. Its curved design adds visual appeal to the home.

4. The concrete patio was replaced with a larger paver patio, retaining walls and terraced landscape beds.

Background Info: This 1998 home on Geist Reservoir was the perfect place for the homeowners to settle down in retirement. They completed their basement and kitchen remodel last year. The outdoor living expansion was the last piece of the puzzle to complete.

Take steps toward healthy aging Commentary by Lorene Burkhart Depressing news: Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in an emergency room for a fall, and every SENIOR LIVING 19 minutes an older person dies because of a fall, according to the U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. Twenty-five percent of all Americans who are 65 or older take a fall every year.

Falls cause more “runs” by medics to retirement communities than any other issue. When a resident falls, staff can make them comfortable but cannot help them up.

That’s why medics are called — to evaluate the damage.

Recently, a friend who was hosting a luncheon at her home fell down some steps and fractured a vertebrae in her neck. The week before, a resident fell in her apartment, hit her head and died a few hours later. Two other residents fell — one in the shower and another walking from the dining room. Another friend has fallen twice because of her dog — first tripping over the rug to let the dog out, then getting caught up in the leash. Older people and pets are often a disaster.

Why? What is happening? Researchers at Purdue University are studying balance and movement of older people with the goal of creating data-driven interventions that cause falls.

Our aging population has multiple problems, but some of them can be managed with more efforts from doctors and therapists.

We are all aging from the day we are born. Being aware that we are in control of the lifelong process is the first step in healthful aging. Then, using every opportunity to be informed and educated on how to use our choices is the next step. But none of this makes a difference in our mental and physical condition at age 80 if we haven’t taken action.

Set a mental goal of how you want to look and feel in the final quarter of your life. For many people, those are years after retirement. It’s never too late to make every day a gift to yourself.

Arlington House and cemetery Commentary by Don Knebel Visitors to Arlington National Cemetery are often surprised to find an imposing Greek revival-style mansion close to rows of TRAVEL tombstones a few hundred yards uphill from President John F. Kennedy’s Eternal Flame. The mansion’s twisted history explains both the cemetery’s location and its name.

In 1802, George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted son of George Washington, began building a massive house atop Washington Hill, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Custis wanted the house, visible from the just-completed Capitol, to be a memorial to President Washington and a repository for his memorabilia.

The completed house was 140 feet wide and featured enormous Doric columns.

Custis named it Arlington House after the family homestead. Upon Custis’ death, Arlington House and the surrounding 1,100 acres passed to his daughter, Mary, who had lived in the house with Robert E. Lee since her marriage to him in 1831. When Virginia seceded from the Union in April 1861, Lee left Arlington House to command Confederate forces and Mary left for her own safety. Union forces soon oc-

cupied Arlington House to prevent Confederate forces from lobbing cannonballs onto the Capitol from Washington Hill. In 1864, the United States government obtained Arlington House and its grounds in a tax sale the Supreme Court later ruled was illegal. To prevent Lee and his family from ever again using Arlington House as a residence, the Army designated the area Arlington National Cemetery and began burying Union dead close to the house.

Today, Arlington National Cemetery contains more than 400,000 graves,

including that of President Kennedy.

Jerks, snobs and tasers “I always correct people when they call an initialism that is not an acronym an acronym. Although, I GRAMMAR GUY think I come across a bit like a snob or a jerk, or both.” -Rick, Fishers Rick, you bring up a great point. Are you a snob, jerk, or both? When you wear your gold-rimmed monocle to the grocery store, it’s a bit over the top. So, maybe you’re a snob with jerk-like tendencies.

Regarding your grammar distinction, let’s tackle it head-on. Most people probably think they know what an acronym is, but let’s review. An acronym is an abbreviation where the abbreviation is formed from letters of other words, usually the first letter of each word. This abbreviation (to be considered an acronym) needs to be pronounceable as its own word. Examples include NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), radar (Radio Detection and Ranging), SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) and Taser (Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle).

If you are pronouncing the abbreviation as its own word, your resulting word is an

acronym. On the other hand, if you’re pronouncing the letters of each word, you’ve got an initialism on your hands. Examples of initialisms include DVD (digital versatile disc), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and FYI (for your information). Initialisms are traditionally capitalized.

Now, things get murky, thanks to the internet. Are internet slang abbreviations like LOL (laughing out loud) and ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) acronyms or initialisms?

I’ve heard people pronounce each of these abbreviated phrases using just the letters as well as spoken phonetically. In the case of ROFL, the acronym version rhymes with “awful.” And, with the proliferation of texting and social media commenting, these abbreviations are increasingly not capitalized.

As popular usage of the term acronym has expanded to include initialisms, I wouldn’t be surprised if dictionaries follow suit to include initialisms in the definition of acronyms.
