What happened: The council approved transferring $40,000 from the 2020 Common Council budget to the 2020 Carmel Police Dept. budget.

What it means: The transferred funds will pay for police officers to participate in a training program called “Enterrupting Racism Now.” The workshop presented by Soul Focused Group explores racism’s roots, taking responsibility for racialized outcomes and building human solidarity.

The transferred funds were left over in the common council budget.

What’s next: The training is expected to take place in early 2021.

What happened: The council sent to the Land Use and Special Studies Committee an ordinance creating a planned unit development for The Courtyards of Carmel.

What it means: The Courtyards of Carmel is proposed to include 149 homes for residents 55 and older on 59 acres at Smoky Row Road and Keystone Parkway. An attorney representing developer Epcon Communities reviewed changes to the proposal that occurred at the plan commission level, such as decreasing the number of dwellings, creating a plan for the historic home on the site and adding traffic control measures. Several nearby residents remonstrated against the proposal at the Oct. 19 meeting.

What happened: The council sent to committee the rezoning of a parcel of land on the northeast corner of Range Line Road and Executive Drive from B-8 Business District to mixed-use.

What it means: The parcel is the site of a building that previously housed a Walgreen’s and is currently the showroom for the Proscenium, which is under construction across Range Line Road. A specific development plan for the site has not been proposed, but the rezoning allows a mixed-use building to be a permitted use there.

Several city councilors sponsored a rate cap resolution as a late item added to the Oct. 19 agenda, which was approved unanimously.

The resolution caps the city tax rate at 78.77 cents per $100 of assessed property value. Without the cap, the tax rate could have increased to a maximum of 79.99 cents, a 1.5 percent jump. The state’s Dept. of Local Government Finance will set the final tax rate.

Councilor Adam Aasen said he supported the cap to ensure taxpayers aren’t surprised when they receive their 2021 tax bills.

“I feel we’re taking ownership and responsibility of the rate the taxpayers pay,” he said. “Whether it’s an increase or decrease year to year, I feel it’s important the council own that.”

Football player remembered for kindness, humor

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Schuyler Bradley will be remembered as a consummate teammate and friend.

The 2019 Carmel IN MEMORIAM High School graduate died early Oct. 17 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Bradley, an Indiana University sophomore, was shot early on Oct. 16 reportedly while trying to break up a fight while on a visit to Alabama, where he planned to attend Alabama’s home football game with Georgia. The alleged shooter, Zachary Profozich, has been charged with murder.

Bradley, 19, was a tight end/wide receiver for the Greyhounds during the 2017 and 2018 seasons after transferring from Cathedral.

“He was a guy that had countless personal relationships inside our locker room,” Carmel football coach John Hebert said. “He was a fierce competitor and tough player, but most important to his teammates was the endless support he showed them. He had a really great sense of humor and could always make his teammates laugh.”

CHS Athletic Director Jim Inskeep describes Bradley as very charismatic.

“He was a magnet for friends and the outpouring of love for him in the last couple of days shows the impact he made on other people,” he said. “Our thoughts are with his family and all of those impacted by this tragic situation. Forever a Greyhound.”

Bradley’s mother, Daphne Groff, had traveled to her son’s bedside and was there when he died.

“It’s the first time in my life I couldn’t save my baby,” she said at the vigil. “Now, he is up there in peace, throwing that football 75 yards, throwing that basketball, telling God he is cheating but that’s how he is going to live.”

A family friend has organized a GoFundMe campaign to pay for his hospital bills and funeral, transportation and housing costs for the family. As of Oct. 22, $60,600 had been raised, well above the $50,000 goal.

Bradley was attending IU on a scholarship as part of the group scholars program.

He was a member of the Acacia fraternity.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his father, Ghiche Bradley Sr.; brothers Ghiche Bradley Jr. and Dana Hyde; and sister, Jersey Rodgers.

Nearly four years ago, Jennifer Nelson Williams and Sandy Sasso wondered if anyone would show up to the POLITICS event they organized — after what they viewed as a very disappointing general election — to discuss women’s issues.

They optimistically hoped for 50 guests and were shocked when the venue reached capacity at 500 people, with hundreds more waiting outside.

“There were just cars and cars of people wanting to come to this meeting, so we realized we had tapped a very deep need,” Sasso said. “That was the beginning of Women4Change.”

Now, with another presidential election on the horizon, the group has grown to include a full-time staff, nine interns and more than 5,000 members from across the state. It’s advocated for women’s issues at the Indiana Statehouse and in Washington, D.C., developed college chapters and created educational programs, but among its most significant accomplishments is bringing the voices of more women into the political process.

“One of the things I’ve heard over the last four years is that women who joined with us are now doing activities and speaking up in ways they never have before,” Nelson Williams said. “For many of the women, when they first made phone calls to their legislators, that was the first time they had done something like that, so that in itself is huge. Bringing people forward into the political process is something we can feel very proud about.”

The nonprofit focuses its efforts on issues primarily affecting women, such as the gender pay gap, women’s health and sexual assault and consent. A major focus this fall is encouraging voter turnout in the November election, as Indiana typically has among the smallest percentage of voters cast ballots in the nation.

“Our mission is to educate, equip and mobilize Hoosiers to create positive change for women,” Sasso said. “What we hope to accomplish is that women, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation, achieve equity in employment, in earnings, in health and in political, civic, cultural and corporate leadership.”

Women4Change is nonpartisan, although Nelson Williams said it has “progressive ideals.” Its board comprises Democrats and Republicans, and each event includes wom-

en representing various viewpoints.

“Women are so good at being collaborative in their discussion, so we feel that Republican or Democrat, when more women come to the table it’s going to be a gentler process, more collaborative, with more people working together to come to a better solution,” said Nelson Williams, a Carmel resident and president of ARN Funeral and Cremation Services in Zionsville.

Sasso, a Carmel resident and rabbi who retired several years ago from Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis, said Women4Change’s commitment to being bipartisan is among its strengths.

“This was a way for women with different points of view to come together on issues which they could agree and to do it in a way that was respectful of others,” Sasso said.

OBITUARIES Ruth “Betty” Elizabeth Ross Paquette, 86, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. She was born on March 3, 1934 in Chicago, IL to Edward R. Ross and Dorothy M. Altherr Ross.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Suzanne E. (Ron) Valle and Mary L. (Ken) McCain; grandchildren, Ken (Kelly) McCain, Melissa (Nick) Lavella, Natalie (Nick) Catton, Matt (Katie) McCain and Nathan (Raquel) Valle; great-grandchildren, Emma, Nolan, Bailee, Marti, Charlotte, Marin, Myles, Leo and James; and half-sisters, Peggy Ross and Mary Lou Sheridan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Armand; and brother, Robert M. Ross.

Betty was a 1952 graduate of Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis. She was a 1956 graduate of Purdue University with a BS in Home Economics.

During her life, Betty was a dietician, Executive Director of Sigma Kappa’s Central Office and retired from Delta Tau Delta Central Office.

Betty also volunteered for several nonprofit organizations.

A private family service will be held.

Curtis Joseph Butcher, 81, of Carmel, passed away Monday, October 19, 2020.

He was born August 11, 1939, in Monroe County, IN to the late Estell and Elsie (Arthur) Butcher.

The law offices of Curtis J. Butcher have represented clients in Carmel and several other states since 1975.

Mr. Butcher served two years as Deputy Attorney General for the State of Indiana.

He earned a BS Degree in accounting at Indiana University. In addition, he earned his Law Degree from Indiana University while completing the requirements to become a CPA. The interest Curtis had in architecture led to the historic downtown Carmel

total renovation, including the beauty and uniqueness of his law office building. In 2009, Curtis received an award from the city of Carmel and Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Ann (Hiatt) Butcher; children, Lora Butcher and Jason Butcher; sister, Brenda Earnshaw.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hamilton County Historian HISTORY David Heighway said it is important to begin planning for the Hamilton County 2023 bicentennial.

The longtime Noblesville resident has been named Heighway to serve on the Bicentennial Commission appointed by the county commissioners. County Clerk Kathy Kreag Williams and County Surveyor Kenton Ward will co-chair the commission.

“We’re just in the planning stages. Obviously, things are iffy for the next couple of years, so we’ll have to see what happens,” Heighway said. “This is the first initial step.

Getting input from Kathy Williams and the various township trustees is going to be really important because we have some ideas, but we want to know how people want to celebrate.”

Williams served on the 175th celebration team.

“Hamilton County has so many deep-rooted traditions as well as the many changes that have come with our growth,” Williams stated. “I look forward to celebrating it all.”

The commission’s executive committee also includes Jessica Petty, Hamilton County Historical Society; Brenda Myers and Sarah Buckner, Hamilton County Tourism; and a voluntary treasurer to be elected from the township appointments. Regular reports to the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners will be made.

“We’d like to get a new county history written. That would be a great thing,” Heighway said.

The commission is slated to launch before the end of 2020, then meet quarterly in 2021, nine times in 2022, monthly in 2023 and once in 2024 to review a program assessment.

The public will have opportunities to get involved in the bicentennial through committee membership, by signing up for special projects, submitting programming ideas and using some of the materials for classrooms and clubs that will be developed for the celebration.

The Carmel Clay Public Library held a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 21 to celebrate the beginning of a $40 million expansion and renovation of its main building at 55 4th Ave. SE. The project includes increased program and event capacity, a parking garage, on-site Digital Media Lab and enhanced outdoor space. Team wins 5th straight title

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com As is often the case in their spirited rivalry, it just was a matter of a few key shots between the Carmel and North Central high school boys tennis teams.

TENNIS The No. 1 Greyhounds edged No. 3 North Central 3-2 in the IHSAA state championship Oct. 17 at North Central. It was a record-tying fifth consecutive state title for Carmel and was its third straight 3-2 win against the Panthers in the championship final.

“It’s North Central. It doesn’t matter what our records are, when we play each other, it’s a battle,” Carmel coach Bryan Hanan said. “They’re always going to bring it. We’re always going to bring it. That’s what rivals do.”

The Greyhounds haven’t lost a match in those five seasons. Their 23-0 record ran their five-year winning streak to 106.

Junior Eli Mercer edged Alex Antonopolous 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to give the Greyhounds the victory.

“Even when I was down and I was losing confidence, I tried to fight for every point and do my best for the team,” said Mercer, who finished with a 27-0 record. “I had to fight for every point and do my best for the team. In the third set, I just focused on being more confident and hitting through the ball.”

Hanan was confident in Mercer’s determination.

“No matter how much he struggled in that match, I just know the type of character he has,” Hanan said. “He never quits.”

Carmel’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Jonas McNamar and junior Srisanth Malpeddi and the No. 2 doubles team of seniors Ethan Eckhart and Corbin King earned the other two points with victories.

Junior Broc Fletcher lost to North Central’s Ajay Mahenthiran 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.

“That match was a lot about momentum, and their guy picked up momentum in the end,” Hanan said. “Broc beat him earlier in the year and the match is always tight.”

At No. 3 singles, Greyhounds sophomore Jack Jentz lost his first match of the season to North Central’s Marquis Willingham, finishing 25-1.

State of the City address postponed — Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard will postpone his annual State of the City address scheduled for November while the city continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously scheduled as a virtual address to be shared on social media, the mayor felt it would be better to wait until such a time that everyone could gather together for a live speech,

as has been the tradition for the past two decades. The annual speech is likely to be rescheduled to the spring of 2021.

Disciplinary charges — The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications has filed disciplinary charges against former Hamilton Superior Court Magistrate William Paul Greenaway. The commission alleges two counts of misconduct related to criminal activity in his personal life when he was employed as a judicial officer. The commission charges that Greenaway was Greenaway arrested and convicted of possession of methamphetamine and resisting law enforcement. It is

standard for a criminal matter to be adjudicated before the commission takes formal action.

City honored for trails — The Indiana Greenways Foundation recognized the City of Carmel with its Outstanding Local Government award during its Annual Greenways Foundation Luncheon. Every year, the foundation recognizes a city, town or county government that has demonstrated success in the development, promotion and management of trail facilities. The Indiana Greenways Foundation chose Carmel because of the city’s vision, dating back to the early 1990s when a group of local bicycle enthusiasts began formulating a plan to extend the Monon Trail north from 96th Street through Carmel and to make it a conduit for future trails across the city.

department is still providing assistance to state and local organizations as they manage through the process to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Now, additional work created by the pandemic includes time-consuming calls by HCHD Director of Nursing Janice VanMetre to confirm each Hamilton County resident reported to have died of COVID-19 actually had the disease to ensure local numbers are reported accurately. Walker, in addition to continuing to plan for other types of disasters, is working to create a COVID-19 vaccination distribution plan.

Through it all, HCHD employees have been wearing masks and taking other precautions to ensure their work can continue uninterrupted.

“We don’t take this lightly,” said VanMetre, a Noblesville resident. “If one person here gets COVID, our whole office is going to be in a bad way, so we all protect each other very much.

‘IT AFFECTS OUR LIVES, TOO’ Throughout the pandemic, HCHD employees have supported each other beyond keeping each other physically safe.

The long hours, constantly dealing with residents who are stressed, sick or frightened by COVID-19, and limited opportunity for time off also take an emotional and mental toll.

“There is nobody that wants to come out of this (pandemic) more than public health,”

As they help the public navigate the pandemic, HCHD employees also are trying to keep their own families and loved ones safe and informed.

“It affects our lives, too. It’s not like we’re robots and we come to work,” said VanMetre, a Noblesville resident. “What people need to take into account and remember is, we do this because we care. If we didn’t, I think we would’ve been out of this business a long time ago.”

Walker said he’s heard reports of public health officials leaving the field during the pandemic for a variety of reasons, but that hasn’t been the case at HCHD, where many of its employees have worked for decades.

With only five years at the department, Walker considers himself a newcomer. He said he and his co-workers are prepared to continue the “marathon” of protecting the public during a pandemic.

“We’re all human. We’ve all had missteps along the way. We’re dealing with a new threat in the community,” Walker said. “Has our response been perfect? No, but we’ve tried to pivot and adapt as fast as we can and do the best we can for our community.”

Commentary by Terry Anker Among the countless good and bad memories of middle school, recollections of morning announcements seem particularly clear. The principal would proclaim the circumstances of the physical plant, the menu (“hot” lunch was served to those of us not lucky enough to carry the “Dukes of Hazzard” lunch box filled with Little Debbie from home), and the latest on the “special” news of the day (the janitor was retiring after 39 years and in third period, carnations were being delivered from secret admirers were being delivered).

By lunch, school was aflutter with news of the goings-on: “Sally received two! One must be from her boyfriend – but who dared to send the other? Tom didn’t get any! Surely, Shirley would have bought one for him?” The game was at hand to find out who might be the admirer, and just as some were disappointed to have received none, others were filled with excitement and trepidation regarding the identity of their would-be paramour. “Would there be a love match, or could it have come from the icky one in my sixth-period science class?” It was all in good fun, and save a few broken hearts, little long-term damage was done.

Flash forward a few decades, and we find anonymous delivery perfected in a world of informants, unnamed sources, social media, whistleblowers and government immunity. If we don’t know the origin, can we know our interest or belief in the veracity of the progenitor?

Anonymity protects us from embarrassment, even retaliation, and enables us to reduce personal accountability, empowering us to do things we might otherwise shun. But does the very thing that makes it attractive to the sender make it suspect to the receiver?

Shanks for the memories Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ve just returned from my weeklong “Heal the Soul” vacation to Florida. Here’s what I learned: HUMOR • Road trips sound like the way to go in this time of a global pandemic and a tight economy, but after 17 hours in a packed Honda Accord with two stinky teenage girls and my Nicorette-chewing bald spouse, I’m not thinking about all the airport germs we avoided or the money we saved by driving. More like, “How do I discreetly fashion a shiv from my Wendy’s spork and quietly shank whoever keeps passing gas?”

• Rum Runners make everything better, particularly when sipped oceanside while scarfing down piping-hot conch fritters. I could even discuss our s@&%-show president without blowing a gasket! Truly miraculous!

• Sand fleas are no joke. My blonde, blue-eyed, pasty-skinned daughter was “attacked” nearly every time she set foot outside of AC, even with copious

amounts of non-DEET-containing products. Her legs were literally covered in hundreds of angry red bites and itchy bumps. I did feel sorry for her, but as she was my child who contracted COVID-19 in August, which subsequently resulted in my own 10-day quarantine, I’ve also delighted in saying, “You had the plague, now you’ve got the pox!” A mother’s love is strong.

• I still kind of dig my husband. Sure, he aggravated me to the point of appropriating prison culture during our drive, but away from the demands of work and kids, he’s funny and thoughtful and very sexy in sunglasses and a tan. It was good to be able to see that side of him and remember why I really didn’t want to shank him.

Editor, I want to express thanks for the story you ran in the Oct. 13 issue titled “The best place to live?” I’m sorry to admit that until this summer, I was largely unaware of the racism and profiling issues that exist in our nation and in our own Carmel community. After the George Floyd tragedy occurred in May, I decided to look deeper into this issue. What I found surprised and saddened me.

I appreciated each of the stories told by our five Black Carmel neighbors, and I was also encouraged to see commentary from our local leaders. Adam Bray’s comments especially resonated with me when he said, “A lot of this is underlying. It’s really unconscious … It would be nice to hear the majority listen and absorb what the experience is and have a little more compassion.”

After all that I have learned this summer about racial issues in our communities, I now firmly believe that it behooves all of us to extend a disproportionately generous amount of love and understanding to all minorities. These good people enrich and strengthen our community, and I’m grateful for them. If we will share our lives with them and invite them to share their lives in return, we will all be better for it.

Yoga studio now open

Franciscan appointment — Patricia “Trish” Weber has been appointed vice president and chief nursing officer for Franciscan Health Central Indiana. She will oversee all nursing-related operations at Franciscan Health and lead a corps of nearly 1,600 Weber nurses at hospital campuses in Carmel, Indianapolis and Mooresville.

The studio is affiliated with Baptiste yoga, which focuses on physical practice, meditation and inquiry work for personal development.

“It’s yoga for how we live today. It connects people with the realities of today and gives them tools not just for yoga but for their entire life,” Cindi said. “We pride ourselves on having yoga for everybody because it is for everybody. We want people to feel comfortable showing up. Each body is different. I may never look like someone else in a certain position, but I’ll always feel amazing after it.”

Launching a business amid a pandemic presented a unique set of challenges, but the Odles were persistent. They believe yoga can provide many benefits in trying times.

Blood donations needed — Versiti Blood Center of Indiana is issuing an emergency appeal for blood donations as communities throughout the state face a potential crisis. Ideally, Versiti strives for a threeday supply of blood available to its partner hospitals. Schools and businesses are typically Versiti’s largest source of blood donations this time of year. New COVID-19 testing site — The Hamilton County Health Dept. has opened a second COVID-19 testing site at Trinity Free Clinic at 14598 Oak Ridge Rd. in Carmel. Ex-Colts lineman offers new way to protect trash cans

Now, his main mission is to protect customers from odors emanating from their garbage cans.

“Like most people, I found the odor unbearable at times,” the Zionsville resident said. “I would drag the bins out to the driveway, stick my head in and attempt to clean all the crud out of them and try to make them smell better. It never seemed like it worked well or lasted very long.”

Diem said he came across a service that wasn’t offered in the area. He discovered there were a couple of manufacturers making the specialized vehicles that automated the whole process.

“It instantly piqued my interest,” Diem said. “I thought what a clever idea and why not bring that to Indianapolis. The opportunity is immense. This is a problem everyone has because your garbage bins smell, and you don’t like it. I figured this is a great solution to help people out and help clean up our communities.”

So, Diem launched Bin Scrub at the end of April. The service is available in Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, Brownsburg and the north Indianapolis area. The eco-friendly process removes odors and grime while eliminating germs.

bins. Diem said with the high temperature, the steam loosens tough deposits and kills germs in the process.

“That’s great because a lot of bacteria is causing the odor in your bins,” he said. “In this day and age, anything we can do to kill germs would be a benefit to just about everybody.”

Diem said he has been working on the business for a year and wanted to launch sooner but was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Diem has two trucks and is planning on expanding his fleet quickly “Folks are loving it,” he said. “Our rate of retention is almost 100 percent. You wouldn’t want to stop doing this after you started it.”

The trucks can clean dumpsters as well and serve residential and commercial proprieties.

“We’ve done some work at restaurants, hotels and apartment complexes,” he said.

Indianapolis Opera presents shorter version of ‘Madame Butterfly’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com This will be like no other production of “Madame Butterfly” Alfred Savia has ever conducted.

MUSIC Savia will be the principal guest conductor for Indianapolis Opera’s live-staged performance of the Giacomo Puccini classic at 4 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Basile Opera Center in Indianapolis.

“I’ve done it several times. I know it very well. It’s one of my favorite operas,” Savia said.

There will be a small audience of approximately 40 people, primarily donors, because of social distancing practices amid the coronavirus pandemic. The production will be available on a virtual link.

“It’s a former Greek Orthodox Church and it’s a very large space,” said Savia, who also is the artistic advisor for Indianapolis Opera.

“We’ve loaded a set in of the house that Pinkerton buys for Pinkerton and Butterfly.

It’s a tall ceiling and enough room to put the set.”

Savia said the entire production is scaled down.

“We are probably doing somewhere between two-thirds and three-fourths of the opera,” Savia said of the 90-minute performance. “We’ve cut out certain characters and the chorus, so it can be done in an abridged fashion. There will be an intermission, but we’re doing it in two acts rather than the traditional three acts.”

Savia said the audience, which will be required to wear face masks, will be socially distanced from the singers. Cast members will be distanced, so face coverings will not be used.

“We’re not having intimate scenes between Pinkerton and Butterfly,” Savia said.

“We thought maybe kiss her hand, but we are not even doing that. It’s going to be pretty obvious they are falling in love and what is about to happen, but they are keeping their space.”

Savia said a string quartet and bass will perform. Piano will cover the wind and

“It will be six players that will be representing the orchestra,” Savia said. “It’s what we can do in the space. With the singing actors and needing space, it would be difficult to do even a reduced orchestra.”

“Madame Butterfly” was originally scheduled to be at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in November. Due to the pandemic, there was discussion of moving it to the Palladium with the chorus being in the loft behind.

“When it became obvious we couldn’t get enough audience members to do that (with restricted capacity), we decided to go virtual,” Savia said. “Normally, we would have brought in the leads and used our resident artists for some of the supporting roles. But in this case, the resident artists are doing all of the major roles, except for Pinkerton, which is being sung by Ganson Salmon, who is a graduate of the resident artist program.”

Salmon, who grew up in Indianapolis, was performing with the Sarasota Opera

when the pandemic hit in mid-March.

“We’re fortunate we have the best group of resident artists we’ve ever had.

Certainly in the three or so years I’ve been working with Indianapolis Opera, it’s the very best voices we’ve had,” Savia said. “Hayley Lipke, who is our Madame Butterfly, is a star in the making. She has a sensational voice. Every one of them are every bit up to the part. I’ve been amazed when we’ve been putting this together how everyone has stepped up and risen to the challenge. I think people will be elated with how well this has come together and how we didn’t need to bring in guest artists for this slightly more intimate virtual production.”

Savia said the goal is to stage the larger production at a larger theater in the spring of 2021.

“That’s the plan, but with many plans in the time of COVID, things change,” Savia said.

“With all the attention brought to our hands with the hand washing and distancing ourselves, it made us bring more awareness to our hands, and how we use our hands for touching, showing emotion, shaking hands, cleaning, playing,” Lewis said. “I don’t think we thought about it as much as we did this year with the COVID.” The digital mural is part of Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s statewide “Every Part Matters” public art project and is on the Westfield Jiffy Lube at 1840 E 151st St. “It’s amazing to see how it makes the side of the building pop,” Lewis said. “Bringing my family to see it or other people sending me pictures of it makes me feel good that I’m contributing my artwork to the world. I love hearing what everyone has to say about it.”

“Artur took different hand pictures and then he illustrated them,” Lewis said. “He gave me the concept and I made my own hand illustrations. We emailed back and forth.”

Silva used black and white images and Lewis used color images.

Lewis said it was Silva’s concept and she incorporated some of the things like baby hands and a heart.

Outdoor ‘triple-threat’ Commentary by Randy Sorrell and Bill Bernard We have long been a proponent of what we consider the design world’s “triple threat.” The idea of a REMODELING triple threat is something you hear about in a variety of settings. In the theater world, a triple threat is having the ability to act, sing and dance. In basketball, it’s the ability to dribble, pass and shoot.

In our world of architectural and landscape design, the triple threat is described as spaces that consist of commodity (meeting the functional needs of its occupants), firmness (meeting the structural needs) and delight (meeting the aesthetic needs).

Sorting out confusion on Rome’s Palatine Hill Commentary by Don Knebel

Palatine Hill, the centermost of Rome’s famous seven hills, contains the ruins of ancient structures whose similar TRAVEL names often confuse modern visitors.

During Rome’s Republican era, Palatine Hill was the home of Rome’s most prosperous citizens. In 27 B.C., after Octavian had defeated forces loyal to Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, the Roman Senate proclaimed him emperor, with the title “Augustus.” He built his official residence on Palatine Hill.

During his 15-year reign, Domitian built two fields that also often bear confusing names. In Campus Martius (Field of Mars), Domitian erected a 250-meter-long stadium that seated up to 30,000 spectators. Dedicated in A.D. 86, the elongated facility was used for athletic competitions and called “Circus Argonalis” (Competition Arena). Today, the interior of what is often called “Stadio di Domiziano” (Stadium of Domitian) lies entirely beneath Piazza Navona, the largest public square in Rome. Just to the east of his palace, Domitian built a 146-meter-long field, surrounded by a two-story colonnaded portico. The exact purpose of what is often also referred to as “Stadio di Domiziano” remains unclear. It may have been used primarily as Domitian’s private garden. To prevent confusion with Circus Argonalis, the field is sometimes called simply “Stadium on Palatine Hill.”

The Project consists of, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: 1st Street NW: The drainage improvements and road reconstruction of 1st Street NW from 3rd Avenue NW to 2nd Avenue NW will consist of new HMA pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, drainage structures, and reconstruction of the north and south approaches of the Monon Trail to meet the reconstructed 1st Street NW crossing.

2nd Street SW: The sidewalk reconstruction along the north side of 2nd Street SW from 4th Avenue SW to approximately 130 feet west of the Monon Trail will consist of new sidewalk, modified curb, curb ramps, concrete approaches, drainage structure modification, water meter relocations, lawn grading, and sodding.

Crooked Stick Lane: The drainage improvements of Crooked Stick Lane project will consist of 750 feet of new drainage structures, HMA patching, curb and gutter, lawn grading, and sodding.
