Council narrowly OKs $15M purchase

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel City Council narrowly approved the $15 million purchase of the Monon Square shopping center by the Carmel CITY NEWS Redevelopment Commission at its Oct. 15 meeting. Councilors who voted against the sale cited cost and a lack of information among concerns.

The 8.7-acre shopping center owned by the Lawhead family is on the northwest corner of Range Line Road and City Center Drive, sandwiched between other areas recently redeveloped by the city. It’s home to several small businesses, including Union Brewing Company, Soho Café & Gallery, Ristorante Roma and others. The city expects to eventually partner with the private sector to build a mixed-use development on the land.

The 4-3 vote came after some councilors said they were surprised to learn that the item could not be sent to committee for further discussion.

The purchase is funded through $25 million in bonds sold in 2017. The ordinance outlining the bond sale states that if any council member disputes a CRC decision to spend bond proceeds greater than $49,999, the council can request its own vote. It does not indicate the item can be sent to committee.

Council President Kevin “Woody” Rider said he expected the council would have an opportunity to discuss purchase details and called for better communication between city officials and the council on redevelopment matters.

“We’re spending $15 million. We should have more input than we’re having,” Rider said.

Councilor Jeff Worrell voted in favor of the purchase as a member of the CRC and again at the council meeting.

“I am convinced that this piece of land is critical to keep the momentum going. It’s not creating any new debt. It’s using money that has already been earmarked for this exact type of situation,” he said. “I apologize to my colleagues who are disappointed by the process, but we voted for the ordinance.”

Carmel Redevelopment Commission Director Henry Mestetsky said the average of two appraisals for the property came in at $11 million.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the owners of Monon Square received other offers on the property in line with what the city will pay.

Campbell said. “I feel the city is overpaying for this property. It just boggles my mind why a developer wouldn’t go after this property.”

Brainard said the city should purchase the land rather than a private entity to ensure that redevelopment fits with the city’s vision, which includes multi-story, mixed-use buildings and associated parking. The property rests between Midtown and City Center, two areas in Carmel’s core that have undergone major redevelopment — with much city involvement — in recent years.

“This will make the connection between City Center and (Midtown and Arts & Design District).

It’s absolutely critical to continue what we started 22 years ago and do it successfully,” said Brainard, adding that he thinks $15 million is a “good value for the taxpayers.”

He also said the property, which brings in nearly $62,000 per year in property tax revenue, is expected to generate $2.7 million per year after redevelopment.

Mestetsky said he’s reached out to affected business owners and that the plans to purchase the site did not come as a surprise to most.

“Even the most nonprofessional spectator would say this is probably the most underdeveloped area left in the central core,” Mestetsky said. “To get private developers to propose potential projects, it was important for the CRC to get ownership of the land.”

The city plans to hire a management company to work with the center’s current tenants.

Mestetsky said the city does not have specific plans for the site and that it will likely be several years before the aging shopping center is torn down. Existing tenants are welcome to stay until redevelopment occurs, he said, and he expects that some will reopen on-site.

Efficiency priority for Glynn

He is confident he can continue to do so as he seeks re-election for his District 1 seat in the Nov. 6 election.

A Carmel resident and former council president, he regards fiscal responsibility and budgeting for the county’s dynamic growth — which isn’t expected to slow anytime soon — among the community’s top priorities.

“We need to be able to provide the same services in 20 years that we do now,”

Glynn said. “Being prudent and fiscally responsible will allow the county to achieve these goals.”

Glynn cites the following as pillars of his platform: • Continued fiscal responsibility.

• Work toward zero-based budgeting.

• Proper funding of county government functions, infrastructure and parks.

Among other functions, the county council adopts budgets, sets salaries, establishes county tax rates and levies taxes to fund construction projects.

A Republican, Glynn is facing a challenge from Democrat Jeremy Eltz, a fellow Carmel resident and first-time office-seeker.

Glynn, 43, has lived in Carmel with his wife, Beth, for 18 years. They have a teen daughter and are members of St. Elizabeth Seton Church. He and his family volunteer at Gleaners Food Bank.

If re-elected, Glynn plans to continue advocating for sound fiscal stewardship, promote strategic budgeting practices and be accountable to taxpayers in an evergrowing county.

“I enjoy looking out for our citizens and being their watchdog in county government,” Glynn said.

Pyramid coming to market

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel’s Christkindlmarkt will be a bit bigger this year.

Organizers of the second Christmas market recently unveiled the FESTIVAL Glühwein Pyramid, a 33-foot tall wooden structure that will serve a variety of flavors of the sweet German wine.

“To our knowledge it is the only one in the U.S.,” said Maria Murphy, market master. “There are other large pyramids, one in Texas in particular, but it doesn’t have the Glühwein base and it doesn’t function the same way that ours does.”

Workers in the pyramid’s base will serve 11 variations of alcoholic beverages and two non-alcoholic ones. Glühwein was a big success at the inaugural market last year, with 10,000 boot-shaped mugs primarily for the sweet drink selling out in just nine days.

Carmel’s pyramid weighs an estimated 10 tons and will have more than 3,000 lights.

The market partnered with Steinbach, a German company known for its nutcrackers and handmade Christmas products, to bring the installation to Carmel.

The market will be open from Nov. 17 to Dec. 23 and include the debut of the Glühwein pyramid.

Nonprofit Carmel Christkindlmarkt Inc. is purchasing the pyramid and did not disclose its cost. The market is supported through a grant from the City of Carmel. The city provided $400,000 to help launch the market last year and is giving $125,000 this year.

Although new to the Midwest, Murphy said the towering structures are common at winter markets in Europe.

“You’ll usually see a Ferris wheel and you’ll see a Glühwein pyramid,” she said, adding that a Ferris wheel won’t be making an appearance at this year’s market but is something planners might consider at a future date.

Council poised to support Finkam’s redistricting plan

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel City Council appears poised to support a redistricting plan proposed by councilor Sue Finkam rather than five others submitted by the public.

At the Oct. 15 meeting, Finkam explained CITY NEWS how her plan better meets guidelines adopted by the council this summer for updating the city council districts. The city is adding two new councilors in 2020 — with one being elected at-large — as a result of becoming a second-class city.

“We looked at a variety of other plans, but when we did the tests, particularly for ideal population, this is the one that had the tightest deviation and that’s what we were trying to drive,” Finkam said of her plan. She is serving as the city’s redistricting coordinator.

Finkam used equations to measure compactness, uniformity and population distribution in the proposed districts and said her plan scored best on each. None of the other plans meet all the guidelines, she said.

Finkam’s plan creates the west, north, central, northeast, southwest and southeast districts. Each has between 15,000 and 15,600 residents. The five incumbent councilors currently elected to represent a district reside within separate districts in the proposed plan. The proposed western district is not home to any current councilors.

The council hired consultants from Kroger, Gardis & Regas to help develop a plan. So far, the city has paid the firm nearly $14,000 for its assistance.

A proposal by city councilor Sue Finkam would create six city council districts. The council is expected to meet Nov. 5 to discuss revisions. The final ordinance is planned to be submitted to the clerk of the Hamilton County Circuit Court by Dec. 5.

Green, who joined the council in early 2017 after a caucus vote, is the only current councilor not supported by the mayor in the previous city council election. Finkam said Green’s proposed district has the most changes because of the massive population growth on the west side of the city and the annexation of Home Place, which would move from the southeast district to the southwest under her proposal.

The council sent the redistricting plan to the Finance, Utilities and Rules Committee.

Several Carmel residents expressed concerns with Finkam’s plan during the meeting. Dee Fox said it appears to be a conflict of interest to have councilors and consultants with ties to the mayor in charge of the process.

“The districts on this map appear mainly to preserve and protect the districts of current mayor-favored councilors with a glaring inequality and out of proportion disruption of councilor Tony Green’s southwest Carmel district,” she said.

Event venue planned on Illinois

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A three-story event and corporate meeting space is planned on Illinois Street north of Main Street.

DEVELOPMENT Noah’s Event Venue presented its site plan Oct. 16 to the Carmel Plan Commission, which sent the matter to the Nov. 8 commercial committee meeting.

The 12,792-square-foot building is expected to host large events, such as weddings, on the weekends and corporate meetings during the week. Noah’s Event Venue operates more than 40 facilities in more than 20 states with six more set to open soon, but the building proposed for Carmel would be among its first to reach three stories. Carmel zoning laws require buildings at this site to be between three and eight stories tall.

The first floor of the building would include a main hall with an adjustable stage, lobby and event staging areas. The second floor would have a large meeting room and two small conference rooms that can be used as the bride and groom rooms during weddings. The third floor would have two small conference rooms and an open-air

The secret to the Carmel High School boys tennis team’s success is actually not a secret at all.

“It’s a lot of hard ACHIEVEMENT work and competition and that breeds success,” said first-year coach Bryan Hanan, who was previously an assistant. “The thing I’m most impressed with is these guys work their butts off.

I never have to tell them to work harder.

They just do it because they want to get better. They have personal goals and they know there is someone behind them to take their spot.”

The No. 1 Greyhounds captured their third consecutive state title by edging No. 3 North Central 3-2 Oct. 13 in the championship match at the North Central High School courts.

“We knew our No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles were going to be a battle, and that’s what it probably was going to come down to,” said Hanan, whose team beat North Central 3-2 earlier in the season.

Thienenman said this one was sweeter because the team had to work harder for it, facing the other top teams.

Tyler Trent’s courageous cancer battle has touched a wide variety of people, from Vice President Mike Pence to PROFILE Purdue football coach Jeff Brohm and his team to Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, a Purdue graduate, texted an encouraging video to Tyler. Pence called and wrote.

Brohm, several football players and Vinatieri have visited his Carmel home.

It’s hard for Trent to put into words how he has impacted others, but he knows how their support has impacted him.

Trent, 20, had to withdraw from Purdue in September as his condition from osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, made him too weak to attend school. He was presented with an associate degree from Purdue when the dean of Polytechnic Institute visited him Oct. 1. Trent received the Purdue Alumni Association’s inaugural Impact Award Oct. 4 “Being a sports reporter (for the Purdue Exponent) and knowing some of the guys on the teams have had a great impact on who I am and what it means to be part of the Purdue community,” Trent said.

Trent said he draws strength from the Purdue community’s support.

“Purdue has allowed me to come in and share my story with some of their indi-

viduals,” Trent said. “I also draw strength through my faith.”

Trent graduated from homeschooling in May 2017. A Colts and Indiana Pacers fan, he describes himself as a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.

“I went to at least a game for 11 consecutive years until I couldn’t go this summer because of my health,” Trent said. “So, that was hard for me, not being able to get out to Wrigley.”

Trent first gained media attention when he and a friend from Carmel, Josh Seals, camped out the night before Purdue’s home game with Michigan in September 2017.

Trent had come straight from a chemotherapy session. His Twitter, @theTylerTrent, has nearly 3,500 followers.

Trent covered the Big Ten basketball tournament in New York for the Exponent in March. He said he was having back pain issues while in New York.

“Before I flew out to New York, I had a biopsy and through that they found a new tumor,” Trent said. “I didn’t find out until I got back from New York that I had a relapse and had osteosarcoma for the third time.”

The cancer has spread to the point where it’s untreatable, his mother Kelly Trent said.

“I’m thankful for Tyler. He’s all about leaving a legacy and making an impact, and he’s been able to do that through this hardship,” Kelly Trent said. “We’re just keeping him as comfortable as possible.”

Kids inspire author’s 2nd book

By Chris Bavender news@currentincarmel.com The Carmel author of the self-published children’s picture book, “Up all Night,” recently released a followPARENTING up picture book called “Babies Have All the Fun.” “By the time I was ready to write the second one, an emerging issue at our house was sibling rivalry. My oldest was 3 and my youngest was 1 and now moving around. I heard on more than one occasion, ‘I wish I was a baby,’” author Jen Lis said. “We found it was somewhat effective to say, ‘OK, sounds good. So you want to use a bottle again and take extra naps and wear diapers?’ I think kids are a never-ending (source) of inspiration for stories.”

Lis, a pharmacist, took that premise and penned “Babies Have All the Fun” shortly after her first book was published.

“Before I had kids, reading to my own kids was one of the things I looked forward to most as a parent,” she said. “I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to put my kids and stories in books that we can share with others.”

But did Nazism ever die after the war?

The standard history books tell us Hitler and his longtime companion, Eva Braun, committed suicide between 2 and 3 p.m. on the afternoon of April 30, 1945. She is believed to have died by swallowing cyanide, and he by a self-inflicted gunshot.

Their bodies were brought up from the bunker beneath Berlin, where Hitler and Braun had been living since January 1945, doused with 200 liters of gasoline and burned beyond recognition. No one saw their faces.

Anatomic proof of Hitler’s death was never established. At a press conference on June 9, 1945, Marshal Zhukov, head of the Soviet army and among the first on the Berlin scene, said they had not identified the body of Hitler, and that perhaps he had escaped. Stalin agreed. Even Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, supreme commander of Allied forces in Western Europe, told a Dutch newspaper on Oct. 7, 1945, that there was “reason to believe” Hitler was still alive.

How is that possible? How could the world’s most wanted person have evaded discovery? Because the European world was in complete chaos. Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele, almost as recognizable as Hitler and nearly as wanted by the Allies, escaped undetected to Argentina. So did thousands of other Nazis.

Maybe the story of Hitler’s death needs to be rewritten, as captured in the book, “Grey Wolf: The Escape of Adolf Hitler.” In that history, Hitler and Braun escaped to live a fine life in South America. Hitler shaved his mustache, underwent a little plastic surgery and lived until Feb. 13, 1962, when he died peacefully at age 72.

As Hitler and Braun fled, their lookalikes, employed as stand-ins for parades and other events Hitler didn’t want to attend, were escorted into the bunker. The lookalikes got ‘married’ the following day, Sunday the 29th. Müller drugged the pair on Monday, April 30, and dressed them in Hitler’s and Braun’s clothes, forced a cyanide pill down the woman’s throat and shot the man in the head at close range to look self-inflicted.

The bodies, faces covered, were carried into the garden for immediate burning. No one suspected a thing.

Hitler and Braun flew to Spain, where General Franco provided them with a new plane to the Canary Islands. A submarine waited, courtesy of Admiral Karl Dönitz, U-boat mastermind and commander-inchief of the German Navy. He promised “an impregnable fortress for the Führer in paradise.” After 10,000-kilometers that took two months, they landed at Necochea, a port city on the Argentine coast.

Initially, Hitler lived in Patagonia to lay the foundation for the Fourth Reich, the bedrock of the Thousand-Year Reich. As I detailed in my historical novel, “Not Just a Game,” and my memoir, “Damn the Naysayers,” Hitler stayed many years in his home, Estancia Inalco, in Ville la Angostura, Argentina, a town a few kilometers from Bariloche, Argentina, a known hotbed for postwar Nazis.

Historians will argue Hitler’s postwar outcome forever. Whether readers believe Hitler survived World War II, an inescapable truth is that Nazism has, with or without its founder. The world must confront this heinous plague to ensure that history does not repeat itself.

CUMC collecting relief supplies

The church is partHURRICANE nering with the United Methodist Committee on Relief this month to gather hurricane relief supplies.

The campaign started after Hurricane Florence did devastating damage in the Carolinas in September.

“UMCOR collects relief-bucket materials and they sent them into disaster areas,” said Jennifer Hampton, the church’s communications and media specialist.

The bucket campaign, called Just One More, will run through Oct. 31.

A Signup Genius link is available on the church’s website and Facebook page to show what items are needed to fill the buckets.

“Whether it’s gloves, dish detergents, cleaning supplies, reusable cloths, there is a list of things we need based on what UMCOR says it puts in their buckets,” Hampton said. “We’re opening it up to the community, too, not just our church. They can see on the link we still need 20 bottles of deter-

Business owners share mixed reactions to City of Carmel’s assistance during road construction

By Viktoria Nasteva news@currentincarmel.com Carmel has had no shortage of construction zones in recent years, with massive overhauls to U.S. 31, COVER STORY Keystone Parkway and Range Line Road redefining what it’s like to drive through the city.

Although many business owners support the city’s long-term goals and appreciate its efforts to assist during construction, others have expressed disappointment in what they describe as a lack of support, communication and compromise during months of road work that directly affect their bottom line.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the city is doing everything it can to help businesses affected by lengthy construction projects.

“We can’t run their businesses for them, but what we can do is do the projects quickly, use social media to ask people to patronize those businesses,” he said. “We can make sure our infrastructure system doesn’t get bad like other cities so there’s permanent bad impacts for those businesses. By making these investments they have a much better long-term future.”

Larry Johnson, manager of Carmel’s Dairy Queen for the past 27 years, is concerned about the future of his business with Range Line Road under construction between Smokey Row Road and Clay Terrace. The project started in early August and is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Vehicles can only drive southbound on North Range Line Road, making it tricky to reach Dairy Queen.

“The city is asking for positivity, and I’m trying,” he said. “I advertise 24/7.”

Johnson has been engaging with the community via Nextdoor and has reached out to local media outlets to share his story.

Despite his diligence and the outpouring of support from a loyal base, he said sales have plummeted 60 percent and he has cut employee hours in half, all during a season when he usually expects sales to get him through the slow winter months.

construction zone and that the city didn’t care about the future of his business.

Homecoming night changed that.

Johnson said the city worked with him to continue a Carmel High School homecoming tradition of going to Dairy Queen for a treat.

The city promoted the event and provided police officers to direct traffic in the area for seven hours, leading to one of the biggest homecoming nights he’s ever had, Johnson said.

“I have to give the city praise,” he said. “I think they are defending the store.”

Getting creative

The City of Carmel has gotten creative with campaigns to boost business in construction zones in recent years. When several Keystone Parkway intersections were converted to roundabouts, the city and chamber of commerce held monthly roundtable meetings with business owners. Companies joined a Business Advisory Committee to create marketing strategies, and the city assisted in planning events and relaxed signage ordinances to ease the pain of construction.

The city developed Carmel Link, a website dedicated to construction projects, because of the Keystone Parkway project. Now known as Carmel Link 2.0, city officials have pointed to it and social media as ways they communicate with residents about construction zones and affected businesses.

However, as of Oct. 19, the “Cone Zone

Businesses” tab on the Carmel Link 2.0 mobile app has not been updated to include businesses affected by Range Line Road construction.

The city hired a full-time employee in its engineering department in 2016 whose responsibilities include visiting with business owners before road work begins.

“We wanted to provide someone dedicated to community outreach for businesses and residents when it comes to construction projects,” City of Carmel spokesperson Dan McFeely said.

Barry Miller, general manager of Brockway Public House on Old Meridian Street, said the only information he received from the engineering department employee’s visit was a timeline. But when he asked McFeely to help him arrange a block party to boost business after more than two months of construction, the city jumped on board, getting him approval and barricades as well as marketing the event, he said.

“I was very satisfied,” Miller said.

Not so happy

Other business owners have not been as pleased with the city’s efforts.

John Perazzo, the owner of J. Razzo’s Italian restaurant in the Hamilton Crossing Centre on Carmel Drive and North Meridian, closed his Carmel location Sept. 15 after seven years in business. He said he could not survive the impact of the three years of construction on U.S. 31 and elsewhere. The

U.S. 31 project led to the removal of the exit to Carmel Drive near the restaurant.

Employees who asked to not be identified at Max & Erma’s, Moe’s Southwest Grill and Le Peep said they also have experienced sharp declines in revenue since the U.S. 31 project. Owners of two of the businesses would like to move them elsewhere. Officials from Kite Realty, owner of Hamilton Crossing Centre, declined to comment on the viability of the area and the status of its tenants. It had previously announced plans to overhaul the center with a bowling center and movie theater but dropped those plans earlier this year.

Mo Merhoff, president of OneZone, the combined chamber of commerce for Carmel and Fishers, said road work impacts local business but is just one of many reasons a business might close its doors or move elsewhere.

“Construction can play a factor, but is it the only reason that a business fails? I don’t know that I buy that,” she said.

CONSTRUCTION Lane restrictions are under way near Keystone Parkway and 96th Street, where a new roundabout interchange will be built. Construction is expected to last through 2019.

Construction on a new access ramp from Lowes Way to Keystone Parkway is under way. Phase 1 of the project will be complete this month.

West 96th Street is closed west of Ditch Road for a storm water culvert project. This project will last through the end of the year.

Range Line Road is closed to northbound traffic between Eighth Street to just south of Clay Terrace for installation of a storm water collection system and pedestrian connectivity. The project will be complete before the end of the year.

Framed thoughts

Disappointed in Kavanaugh vote

Commentary by Terry Anker Each week, the origination of this very column comes from a template – not of the ideological sort but rather of the functional. It arranges concepts into a consistent and comfortably editable form. Its headers remind of the hoped date of publication and the exact number of words. It also urges the suggestion of a title, while the ultimate choices rests with the crack editorial staff.

It is all format over function. It does not write this column or even frame it with the germ of an idea. It sits, like a ruined city, with an outline of what might be but little image of what should.

Would it be better to start each anew? Could an absence of any expectation lead to more creative and compelling thinking? Like openmic poetry, it could meander only to the contentment of the deliverer, safe in the notion that the platform was without constraint. But then, isn’t there beauty in brevity? Don’t we best communicate within the outline of some accepted form? A template brings order and ensures needed structure.

Still, if the template is too thorough, does it become more an administrative form desperately seeking modest and redundant information? Does its very limited scope pre-determine that the thinking produced by it will be equally banal and correspondingly uninspired?

Is an editorial outline too simple as a metaphor for our lives? Perhaps. Yet, don’t we each begin with a simple template, staring blankly, urging us to fill with action? We are born with any number of gifts and debilitations. From there, is it we that control the framing or it that controls us? Too much constrains and too little fails to liberate. Can we find our voice within the confines of a reasoned structure?

Finally caught a break Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m on the brink of something wonderful, friends. Tomorrow starts a week-long fall break for the school district HUMOR where I teach, and neither my kids’ break nor my husband’s vacation days overlap — which means I have five days of doing whatever I want without the needs of my family sucking me dry, at least from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a Christmas miracle come early.

So, I’m sitting here blissfully planning how I shall spend each little nine-hour slice of heaven. Netflix and Hulu will fill a good portion, as I am behind on a few of my favorites. I’ve also got a basement full of the demonically possessed to empty as I prep for the best suburban Halloween graveyard within a 5-mile radius (I am, of course, excluding the Trumpkin-Pencekin house down the road, with which I simply cannot compete. Bravo to you, whoever you are.

Your display is truly terrifying!). I had “Grade Papers” on my list for a hot minute, but let’s be honest. A box of Kleenex and “This is Us” are calling. Quizzes can wait.

What I’m most looking forward to is downtime. The not rushing around after work to drop a kid at practice, swing by Meijer for yet another gallon of milk, and then throw together a Kraft box dinner that no one will eat, anyway. I don’t have to get out of bed, I don’t have to shower, I don’t even have to put on clothes. OK, maybe I need the clothes, but who says they must be clean?

Not this gal! Nope, I can just slow down and enjoy something wonderful. A break.

Editor, We were very disappointed (in Republican Senators’ votes) for Judge Kavanaugh! Not only because of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, but because of Judge Kavanaugh’s rulings against environmental concerns. When are they going to address all the rollbacks by this administration that are detrimental to our environment? Do they not care about our children and grandchildren? What will their children think when they look back at their father or mother for taking away the individual rights of others.

With their vote, they taught children everyone will not be treated equally. The rulings in the Supreme Court will tear this country apart, and they are a major part of it. How is it possible to have such little compassion for the future of the nation?

School board vote is key

Besides our great people, one of Carmel’s finest assets is our public schools.

People and companies move OPINION to Carmel for our schools.

The voters of Carmel have recognized the value of our schools by overwhelmingly supporting Carmel Clay Schools’ referendums. On Nov. 6, there is an election for three seats on the CCS school board.

That election affects our schools and our property values.

We ask our public schools to educate all our children. Carmel Clay Schools are recognized not only for their championship sports teams, but also for the number of merit scholars, performing arts, DECA and many other great programs and clubs that win state and national awards. Carmel’s special education programming is admired by districts across Indiana. And while CCS has been in the news a few times this last year for some not-so-positive reasons, there is nothing broken with our schools.

It is easy to complain about one issue or decision and then decide to run for school board, but it is much harder to set the direction of our schools by providing vision

and leadership. As a former school board member and president, I know that school board members need to be objective, forward thinking and able to represent all the stakeholders for what is in the best interest of our public schools. I also know that certain decisions the board must make are based on information that cannot be shared with the public.

The school board sets the tone of the district by hiring and working with the superintendent, setting policies and approving certain financial decisions. The school board is the district’s board of directors. We do not want board members who run for just one issue or the stories that make the news. We want the CCS board to be made up of members with different skills who work together as a team to do what is best for every student.

I ask that you educate yourself on the candidates, know why they are running and take time to vote for school board on Nov. 6.

Makes perfect sense to me. A marketing client of mine first brought PLAIN TALK this up the other day.

“Where has the time gone?” everyone asks. “Can’t believe it’s October already,” they say.

It does seem like time flies even faster the older we get. In fact, there is a lot of scientific evidence that says so. As early as 1890 in Scientific American, psychologist William James wrote that as we age, time seems to speed up because adulthood is accompanied by fewer and fewer memorable events. When the passage of time is measured by “firsts” (first kiss, first day of school, first family vacation), the lack of new experiences in adulthood, James morosely argues, causes “the days and weeks (to) smooth themselves out … and the years grow hollow and collapse.”

So why make it go faster? The calendar says that autumn started officially Sept. 22.

But it seems like the day after school closes, the discount stores already have back-to-school items stocked. I know, I

know. Some kids go to school literally yearround now. Which I think is wrong. Sorry.

Kids deserve a long summer vacation. Let them make those memories which will last them a lifetime.

Then I hear a reporter friend on a local TV station say, in late July, “As we approach summer’s end, it’s time to … (blah blah).”

“In these final weeks of summer, we need to (blah blah).” What? In both cases summer still had weeks and weeks to go. Then, there are the end-of-summer sales in early August. About the same time the Halloween stuff started appearing in the stores. The Christmas stuff follows quickly.

Why the rush? When the temp is sub-zero in January, we pray for summer to come.

Then, when it comes in mid-June, it’s “almost over.”

So, let’s slow down. And have a good day.

Mary Ellen and I decided today to make a reservation somewhere for the upcoming New Year’s Eve. Last year, HUMOR I waited until Dec. 31. A little last-minute, but I did leave a voice message first thing that morning.

I called one place and the manager said, “We start booking after Nov. 1, but don’t wait too long. Some loser called last year on New Year’s Eve morning.”

For fun, my wife and I tried to see if we could remember what we did every New Year’s Eve. We were doing well until we hit 2000.

“Dick, we went to French Lick to celebrate the Millennium.”

“No, Mary Ellen, the Millennium was technically 2001.”

“You are wrong about that and I refuse to have this argument every thousand years.

OK, what about ’99, Dick?”

“Wasn’t that the year we took your sister to dinner?”

“I don’t have a sister. I thought that was your sister. How about ’98? We got a bottle of Champagne and walked hand-in-hand through the park. Wait, maybe that was

Rick in ’88.”

I became clear we had not been invited to a New Year’s Eve party at someone’s home in many years.

“I think,” Mary Ellen said, “it’s because one of us talks endlessly about how television has changed over the years and how hard it is to write a weekly humor column.”

“Do I do that, Mary Ellen?”

“Talk about insecure! I didn’t say it was you. Hey, why not have a New Year’s party this year? After all, we have a new house.”

“I’m sure not going to invite a bunch of ungrateful, selfish people who didn’t have the courtesy to include us in their past celebrations.”

Heart center honored again

By Maria Cook news@currentincarmel.com St. Vincent Heart Center’s Heart Emergency Unit recently earned the PRC Award of Distinction for Excellent ST. VINCENT Performance in Overall Quality of Care. It is the second consecutive year the Carmel health care facility has received the award.

The award is based on patient feedback, according to Cynthia Cartee, director of the St. Vincent Heart Center’s Heart Emergency Unit.

“This PRC survey is given to patients who received care from an emergency department,” Cartee said. “The designation is based on the percentage of patients who rate the care setting as ‘excellent’ in response to survey questions about the overall quality of care.”

For a health care provider to receive the award, almost 100 percent of surveyed patients must rank the overall quality of care as “excellent.”

Carmel Tattoo doubles space

Carmel Tattoo owners Adam French and Michelle Yager-French cited a need for more space, coupled with concerns about the city’s plans for their former building, as reasons for relocating.

“We outgrew the space we were in probably three years ago,” French said. “I know the city has plans down the road for that block, and the uncertainty of how long those buildings will continue to exist was a big factor for us. So, we felt it might be a good idea to be proactive and find something a little bigger.”

At around 1,700 square feet, the new location is nearly twice the size of Carmel Tattoo’s previous space.

“Where we landed, it just couldn’t have been a better fit,” French said. “We’re with a wonderful landlord, we feel like our visibility here is even better than before, and we’re in one of the newer buildings.”

Texas Roadhouse is poised to open a new 7,000-square-foot restaurant in Westfield’s Greyhound Plaza shopRESTAURANT ping center.

Construction began earlier this year on the site where a Don Pablo’s restaurant once stood at 14758 Greyhound Plaza.

Managing partner Jack Brittingham said Texas Roadhouse is slated to open as early as late November or early December.

He said the area is the perfect fit for the new venture.

“It’s a fantastic area,” Brittingham said.

“With the visibility that the location has and also with Grand Park being where it is and the growing of Westfield, it only made sense.”

He said the project has been in the works for the past year. He said the number of people visiting Grand Park and number of visitors in the city is an added benefit.

Humperdinck to make Palladium debut

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Born Arnold George Dorsey, he took a new name, courtesy of a manager, that no one ever forgets.

CONCERT Legendary English pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck will make his first appearance at the Palladium at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The tour features songs from his 2017 album, “The Man I Want To Be,” which also is the title of one of the songs.

“I think that’s one of the best albums I’ve done in a while because it has a lot of new songs on it,” Humperdinck said. “It’s not doing somebody else’s material and making it your own. It was a different approach for me this time.”

The album includes a slower version of Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are.” Humperdinck’s new Christmas album, “Warmest Christmas Wishes,” was released this month.

“At the end of the year, I should be releasing a PBS special which I did in Hawaii (this fall),” Humperdinck said.

His concert will include his major hits.

“I can’t do a concert without doing the standards that made it possible for me to be here in the first place,” he said. “It’s a show that has been tried and tested around the world.”

At 82, Humperdinck isn’t slowing down.

“People keep saying to me that you’ve been in the business, are you going to put your feet up or hang your hat up?” Humperdinck said. “I say I don’t even know what that means. I just want to continue until I can’t sing anymore. But I can sing. My voice is as strong as it was when I first started.

It hasn’t lost any of its value. When you get older your vibrato gets a little slower, but mine hasn’t. It’s become a very contemporary voice, which I really love.”

Humperdinck performs 80 to 90 concerts per year.

“Each time I walk on stage it’s fabulous,” Humperdinck said. “I don’t think there is a feeling better than being appreciated by the people sitting there watching you perform.”

Archivist earns national certification editorial@youarecurrent.com Great American Songbook Foundation Archivist Lisa Lobdell was recently named to the national Academy of Certified Archivists, a designation that supports and promotes the highest level of professional archival standards and practices.

Lobdell has served since 2010 as archivist of the Foundation’s Songbook Archives & Library, which houses more than 100,000 documents, images and historic artifacts.

Lobdell an Indianapolis resident, established the Foundation’s physical archives and continues to manage the acquisition of new collections, curate gallery exhibitions, supervise volunteer docents and oversee increasingly important digital preservation efforts.

Lobdell took the Archival Certification Examination during the Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting in August in Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Society of American Archivists, the Society of Indiana Archivists, the Midwest Archives Conference and the Association of Recorded Sound Collections.

Humperdinck said his fans span a large age range, which has expanded his audience.

“If you have one age group, they disappear,” he said. “But with my kind of audience, it’s three or four generations, and it’s just unbelievable.”

Humperdinck made his splash in 1967 with his version of “Release Me.” “That one song gave me my career,” he said. “It doesn’t happen very often in today’s world.”

The song was No. 1 for six weeks in March and April 1967 in the United Kingdom, keeping The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” from reaching the top spot.

“It stopped the Beatles from having their 13th No. 1,” Humperdinck said. “This unknown person came along and stopped the almighty Beatles. It’s been a great stepping stone in my life. It was No. 1

around the world and gave me a global career immediately. My style stands out from all the others and it was unusual for a balladeer to come into the charts and remain there and be fortunate to have about $150 million in album sales around the world.”

Some of Humperdinck’s other major hits include “The Last Waltz” and “After the Lovin.’”

His manager Gordon Mills took the name Engelbert Humperdinck from a German 19th century opera composer.

“Mills developed a stable of singers, including Tom Jones and Gilbert O’Sullivan and myself. Between the three of us, he had a pretty good British team of horses,” Humperdinck said. “The only thing I would have liked to have had was a middle initial because it did belong to the man who wrote ‘Hansel and Gretel’ (opera). I would have liked to have the variation. I am a doctor of music. I should put a doctor in front of it.”

Butler bands director to guest conduct U.S. Marine Band

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Butler University Director of Bands Col. Michael Colburn will return to his roots.

Colburn served with the EVENT U.S. Marine Band, dubbed “The President’s Own,” for 27 years, including the last 10 as director.

“I’m looking forward to working with the group again,” Colburn said. “I’ve had a couple of chances to guest conduct them since I retired in 2014, but those opportunities don’t come very often, so this is really special. The chance to do that in our new home of Indianapolis is going to be a lot of fun.”

The U.S. Marine Band, which was formed in 1798, will perform a concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Tickets were free and all were quickly distributed.

“I’ve got a group of 40 or so students coming to the concert,” Colburn said.

Colburn played the euphonium for nine years and then was the assistant director for eight years.

“The current director, Jason Fettig, served as my assistant during my entire time as director, so we worked very closely together,” Colburn said. “So, I’ve been proud to see what he’s accomplished. Plus, I still know many of the players and ensemble as well. We stay in touch with one another.

I’ve been watching what the band has been doing since retirement with great interest and enthusiasm.”

Colburn will conduct the band for a rendition of composer John Williams’ “The Adventures of Han” from the movie, “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

“Our relationship with Mr. Williams began when I was an assistant director and we were trying to find someone to come in and guest conduct for one of our major anniversaries,” Colburn said. “I invited him on behalf of the then-director. That started a relationship I’m very happy about.”

Colburn said Williams served as Marine Band guest conductor several times during Colburn’s tenure as director.

“He actually did write a piece for the band shortly before I retired, called ‘For the President’s Own,’” Colburn said. “I was really excited to have one of our most famous composers writing a piece for the Marine Band.

I’ve done a lot of Mr. Williams’ music, as you might imagine, but I’ve never conducted this (piece) before since it was part of the soundtrack of the movie that came out this summer. I’m looking forward to learning the piece and taking it for a test ride with the Marine Band.”

Colburn said there are several differences. For instance, the average age of Marine Band members is approximately 35.

“The first thing I told the members of the Butler Wind Ensemble is I didn’t ever expect them to sound like the Marine Band. That wouldn’t really be a realistic expectation,” Colburn said. “I’ve enjoyed working with young members for many years. Even with my time with the Marine Band, I did a lot of guest conducting with high school and college ensembles. My father was a high school band director, so I’m no stranger to education.”

When the decision was made to stage the musical “Curtains” this school year, Carmel Middle School choir teacher MUSICAL Trisha Scheidies knew who she had to call.

Scheidies grew up in the Pittsburgh area and one of her older friends from the dance studio was Megan Sikora.

Sikora was in the original Broadway production of “Curtains” in 2007, playing the role of Bambi. Sikora spent time with the CMS cast members and the Carmel High School music students Oct. 15 and 16.

“I love Trisha, we go way back,” Scheidies said. “I love this show. Its message is the true heart of what Broadway and theater is.

It’s a great show for this age to do and I’m happy to be able to bring my experience to them.”

Scheidies said she has always been inspired by Sikora.

“I’ve always been so proud to say I know her and looked up to her forever,” Scheidies said. “So, when I knew we were doing the show, I said to (director) Jason (ElRite) that is a perfect opportunity to give our stu-

dents an incredible experience that they are never going to forget. It’s not every day you get to meet the person who was in the show you are doing at your middle school.”

“Curtains” will be presented Nov. 8 to 10.

“I’m looking forward to using everything she tells us during the show,” Fuhrman said.

“We are celebrating that,” said Kim Greene, one of the partners of the Carmel gallery, 111 Main St. “The Christkindlmarkt helped a lot during the holidays.”

The partners have various talents.

Greene, Carmel, and Debbie Slack, Carmel, specialize in oil paintings. Marie Reamer, Carmel, does fine art photography. Nancy Keating, Carmel, is a mosaic artist. Randall Scott Harden, Noblesville, is an impressionist oil painter.

Harden joined as a partner in September.

“We have some new artists we’re excited about,” Greene said.

New artists include Wesley Dallas Merritt, Westfield; Wendy Franklin, Carmel; Yuri Okamoto, Indianapolis; Amy Greely, Nashville; and B. Skinner, Battle Ground.

There are 18 artists in the gallery.

“We have a wait list, but we are always looking for good local talent,” Greene said.

Reamer said the foot traffic is best later in the week and weekends. She said the gallery walks and other events in the Arts & Design District help bring in business.

“We’ve provided space for some new, talented artists and we made it through the year. That’s a good accomplishment,” Reamer said. “We did really well. We had a great first year.”

Greene said she is proud that the gallery has kept the quality high and how the partners have meshed.

“We all have different backgrounds and experiences,” Greene said.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday.

The Great American Songbook Foundation is laying the groundwork for the sale of Asherwood, the massive ASHERWOOD Carmel estate donated by philanthropist Bren Simon to support the foundation’s mission of music education and historic preservation, according to an Oct. 18 news release.

A thick, meaty burger is layered with mild Monterey Jack cheese, candied bacon slices, and strawberry preserves. A sea-salted peanut butter is smeared on the bun. I’m a little late to the peanut-butter-on-a-burger game, but this was an excellent choice to introduce me to the delicacy. The Pint Room lets you choose between a variety of sides, and

I’m a sucker for sweet potato fries. In addition to the stellar food, The Pint Room’s bar has a unique ambiance, with the names of all its current beers listed on a chalkboard.

Beer taps line the walls behind the bar. It’s definitely a burger-and-beer joint, and it didn’t disappoint. If you aren’t a fan of red meat, The Pint Room offers some salads, different sandwiches and a variety of appetizers as well.

Suggested pairings: The Pint Room has 100 rotating taps and 24 core taps, so you’re bound to find a beer you like. Blueprint for Improvement: Basement finish in Westfield Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal of this basement finish was to create a functional floorplan that allowed for entertainment, relaxation and recreation.

1. Designing a floorplan that worked for the homeowner was the first step in this large transformation. An entertainment area, office space, bedroom and full bathroom were incorporated into the final design.

2. In the entertainment area, a stacked stone gas fireplace and built-in cabinetry and shelving were added.

3. The entertainment area also included a wet bar, finished with new cabinetry and a cement tile backsplash, making it a perfect place to host guests.

4. A home office was created and designed to be easily separated from the rest of the basement with a sliding barn door.

5. An extra bedroom and full bathroom were added to the basement for guests.

Background info: Located in the Merrimac neighborhood in Westfield, this mid ’90s home was the perfect place for the homeowners to raise their family. Although the home hadn’t had many updates, it still functioned well with the exception of the basement.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The challenge for this project was space planning to create a new finished basement. The unfinished basement was mostly used for storage and kids’ recreation. The family was missing storage and needed a good layout that created separate areas that met current and future needs.

Couldn’t — or could? — care less Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I care approximately zero about owning a watch. I can’t imagine (at this point where our phones GRAMMAR GUY rule our lives) ever needing to own a watch. I don’t care about them as fashion accessories, nor do I need to have one as a status statement. After I take a watch off, my arm hairs all stand at attention as if the commander of the arm hair army is passing by.

So, should I say, “I could care less about watches,” or, “I couldn’t care less about watches?”

I should correctly say, “I couldn’t care less about watches.” This implies that my level of caring about watches is already so low it may as well be nonexistent. It’s not possible for me to care any less about owning a watch. Even nerdy calculator watches are redundant at this point unless you’re wearing one, ironically. And I don’t really see the point in the smartwatch.

With my smartphone, I have no need for a watch. As a man who wears male clothing, my pockets are big enough for my wallet, phone and Burt’s Bees lip balm.

Don’t get me started on pockets and gender privilege. It’s totally a thing. Men have an upper hand even when it comes to functional, amply sized pockets.

When you say, “I could care less,” it implies that you can, in fact, care less.

Unless you’re using this phrase sarcastically, you’re using it incorrectly. “I could care less about humans,” the uppity housecat yawned to herself. First of all, that cat can talk! Secondly, she’s implying that she has the capacity to care less about humans, even though she has not exhibited any evidence that she has ever cared about humanity (with the exception of when she’s hungry).

Perhaps the key to reducing our anxiety and stress is to start caring less about things out of our control. We get so consistently worked up about the littlest things.

On the other hand, maybe you couldn’t care less about this entire topic. If that’s the case, you’re already ahead of your time.

Skip the lemon — Turns out, the lemons you get in restaurants to spruce up your water, iced tea, or pop are just yellow amalgamations of gnarly funk. According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of Environmental Health, you’re probably drinking more than you bargained for when a wedge of lemon slips into your beverage. The researchers swabbed the rinds and flesh of 76 lemons from 21 restaurants during 43 visits and found that 70 percent of them produced microbial growth.
