Brainard: ‘Carmel is first-rate.‘

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard spoke at the Carmel Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Oct. 10, giving his State of the City address.

Brainard touched early on in his speech about the City’s recent ranking by Money magazine as the No. 1 place to live for cities with populations between 50,000 and 300,000. The mayor also touted several awards recently bestowed upon the community, including a Green Community Brainard Award from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, national recognition for the success of the Keystone Parkway project and a 2012 Model Agency distinction for the Carmel Police Department.

“I can’t think of a better anniversary present for Carmel’s 175th year,” Brainard said of the accolades. “(The) awards reflect the level of expertise as well as hard work of our city’s department heads and the high regard for their innovation and dedication to excellence. I would like to thank the employees of the City of Carmel for achieving excellence in their respective fields.”

Brainard delved deeper into the Money magazine ranking, noting the factors involved in the publication’s decision included Carmel’s vibrant economy, its continued quality of schools, affordable living and “The Happiness Factor.”

“Some people find happiness through spending time with family and friends, a fulfilling career, attending or participating in the arts, attending city festivals and events, recreational pursuits or outdoor leisure activities,” he said. “We are trying to build a city that reduces the stress of traffic jams, crime and a hectic lifestyle – a city that fulfills the promise laid out by the drafters of the Declaration of Independence.”

In a turn to more pressing issues, Brainard was quick to praise Carmel’s reliance on TIF (tax increment financing) dollars to fund development – and defend that methodology.

“Carmel is one of many cities in Indiana using TIF for redevelopment,” he said. “Our TIF bonds are carefully timed to be paid in full when the TIF districts expire. There are some in the community who would try to have you believe that we have put too much at risk. They paint a doomsday scenario, saying that we have jeopardized the future financial integrity of the city by borrowing and investing so much in redevelopment projects.”

Brainard then reaffirmed Carmel would be unaffected by such issues, but warned that vigilance would still be required.

“While the recent deep recession has required careful and constant fiscal management, Carmel will emerge unscathed and well poised for the future,” he said. “It appears that the city will have about $20 million in the bank as of the end of this calendar year.”

City Council president Rick Sharp was an interested observer at the address, noting, “I thought it was a good recap of the projects done to date. I also thought some of it was damage control, regarding the $200 million in bailouts the Carmel Redevelopment Commission is seeking.”

Brainard closed by saying, “Even though we have achieved the No. 1 designation and we understand this is a tremendous honor, it is not a time to sit back and rest on our laurels, but rather a time to take advantage of this rare opportunity to capitalize on this great story and use it to attract top level employees and businesses.”

Carmel Marathon Weekend returns

The Carmel Road Racing Group announced last week that the Carmel Marathon Weekend will return for its third annual event on Apr. 20, 2013.

Next year, in addition to the usual lineup of the Marathon, Half Marathon, 8-Kand and One-Mile Family Fitness Walk, organizers have responded to participant feedback by adding the Marathon Relay. Additionally, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent has been brought aboard as the official charity partner for the 2013 Carmel Marathon Weekend.

“We’re honored to have Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent on board with us for 2013,” said Todd Oliver, president of Carmel Road Racing Group and race director for the Carmel Marathon Weekend. “Their expertise and focus on providing extraordinary care reaches far beyond the walls of the hospital and can be seen throughout the community. We hope to help them make a difference in the lives of patients from our home of Carmel and from around the country.”

The newly minted Marathon Relay, held on the same course as the marathon, will give teams of two, three or four runners the chance to win award categories for men, women, co-ed and costume. The relay will consist of four legs with

Oliver distances of 6.9, 8.1, 7.0 and 4.2 miles, for a grand total of 26.2 miles.

All participants will receive a medal with the inaugural Carmel Marathon Relay design.

“We have found that runners love medals, so much so that it can really be a motivating factor in their decision to run a race,” Oliver said. “As

a way to say thank you to those who return year after year, the ‘streaker medal’ will be a visual reminder of their dedication and determination once they cross the finish line.”

This year’s event, held on April 21, received more than 3,000 registrations, including participants from 41 states and four countries. Next year, Marathon Weekend will add additional incentives for returning participants with a special, second medal in addition to their finisher’s medal for the third annual event. To be eligible for the “Keeping the Streak Alive” commemorative medal, participants must have finished a race event in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Oliver lauded the plethora of local merchants who will continue to step up and support the event.

“With the support of our partners, the community and past participants, we’re ready to build on the momentum of the past two years and continue to make the Carmel Marathon Weekend a successful and positive event for everyone involved,” he said. “We’re excited our event is quickly becoming a ‘mustdo’ race for runners around the country, and we’re working hard to keep our participants wanting to come back to Carmel year after year.”

Getting tough on child abusers A USED CAR! Commentary by Jason “Hogjawz” Peek

I know this is a touchy subject but it is talked about in our shop a lot.

Every time I turn on the idiot box, I see another child has been abducted or beaten or killed. I don’t understand how someone can have this mentality, but that is moot.

These predators are out there in every city and neighborhood, and some of the Web sites, like Felony Spy aren’t always up to date because people move, especially when they are on the run from everyone. I highly suggest, no matter the age, you talk to your kids and have a plan on what to do and not to do if someone comes after them. Don’t be shy to come up on a suspicious character and ask his business. Do the buddy system. Put them in a mixed Martial Arts class and show them soft spots on the body; it’s okay to know how to fight and hurt someone if it is used correctly.

I have three girls, ages 17, 11 and 2 plus a 5-year old boy who I adore.

I would take my own life for my babies and fight to the death if need be.

One thing I teach is that even if you have a weapon on you, do not get in the car or you are dead! Fight, scream, kick, run, act like a nut and hope the predator runs from the commotion.

We are taught these days that if someone strikes you, just let it go and tell the proper authority, even at school. Well I say baloney; you get hit, you fight back. It is called self defense and it is your right! Find what works best for you and your family and don’t be shy to teach kids to fight back. It is our job as parents to teach our kids to be safe, and bowing down to the violence doesn’t work. It breaks down self esteem and helps the nutbars and the bullies feel stronger. Let’s not be so politically correct and wimpy on this subject... Remember when we were young and the guy bothering you quit after a good shot to the jaw? I do.

Let’s let our political leaders know that just maybe a good ‘ol hanging or to get thrown back into general population in prison might help these nuts to stop. Six years, three served and probation with a special cell block doesn’t seem to be working. I’m more comfortable with a noose and a hole in the ground.

New offerings range from parent/child workshops, to classes geared toward those just learning about the arts and theatre. Training opportunities are also offered to those who have been performing for years and want to fine-tune their skills, and all classes are instructed by local theatre professionals. The partnership will benefit patrons by providing participants specialized programming in dance and theatre that Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation cannot currently offer the community.

New offerings will be spotlighted within the winter/spring Escape Guide hitting homes and the Monon Community Center in mid-November.

Century 21 Rasmussen, relocating from its previous location in the “Little White House” at 116th and Meridian streets, will be opening an office in Carmel City Center in mid-October.

Volunterrism / Elections Walkers and runners gear up for race COMMUNITY

It was fitting if not by chance for Jason King, VP of the Carmel Education Foundation Board to address the audience at the Carmel Chamber of Commerce luncheon waiting to hear the Mayor’s State of the City Address. Jason and his fellow Board of Directors and volunteers are a perfect example of why Carmel is such a great place to work and live. Carmel schools, heavily backed by the Carmel Education Foundation, are a key advantage to Carmel’s success, a point not missed by Mayor Brainard during his speech.

The Carmel Education Foundation is one of the oldest foundations of its kind and has awarded over $1,600,000 in college scholarships to CHS Seniors and $500,000 in education grants to local school teachers. In order to hand out this kind of support, Jason was prepping the largest audience of the year at the Chamber, to consider running or walking with him in the 4th Annual Ghost & Goblins 5K/2K and Wellness Fair. He even teased the Mayor that a complimentary application had his name already filled in.

For each paid student or staff registration, CEF will set aside $2 for his/her school and available through the grant process. The elementary school with the most student participants per capita will also win the Top Participating School trophy.

Educate yourself about school board candidates Commentary by Bruce Calabrese Besides our great people, one of Carmel’s finest assets is our public school system. People and companies do come to Carmel for our schools. On Nov. 6 there is a crucial election for two seats on our school board. That election will greatly impact our schools and, of course, our property values in Carmel.

There is nothing broken with our schools.

Despite being one of the lowest in funding from the state, our schools excel in all aspects because we have great teachers, students, parents, administrators and taxpayers.

I hear teachers have become frustrated with the new state mandate for the collective bargaining process and teacher evaluation system. I hear the teachers union would rather fight than negotiate in good faith to take advantage of incentives that are available for reaching a negotiated, nonarbitrated contract. I hear teachers are saying the new evaluation system makes extra work taking time away from their job, teaching our children.

The teacher’s union, of which only approximately 38 percent of Carmel teachers are members, is using these issues as a wedge instead of trying to work together to solve problems. The union has recruited a former teacher’s union president to run for the school board. There is

A good teacher or former union president does not necessarily make a good school board member. Board members set the direction of our schools by providing vision and leadership for the future of our schools. The current Carmel teacher’s union leadership would rather fight than work collaboratively to solve problems. If a system has unreasonable burdens or problems, then our school board needs to work with teachers, the administration, state legislators and any other qualified groups for the continuation of our educational successes.

Left-turn lanes to improve downtown Westfield

By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com The city of Westfield has partnered with INDOT to implement much needed traffic improvements at the intersection of Ind. 32 and Union Street. Left-turn lanes weree installed in each direction on Ind. 32 and Union Street to prevent left turns from impeding through traffic and to improve traffic flow in downtown.

Westfield Mayor Andy Cook says the improvements are long overdue.

“In talking to residents and downtown merchants, a consensus was made that the intersection needed to be a priority,” said Cook. “Upgrading the intersection will help to alleviate the congestion our downtown receives during periods of high traffic.”

Pavement markings at the intersection were replaced to modify the traffic configuration on Oct. 9. Traffic will be directed around work zones, and motorists should use caution while driving through the area. Work at the interchange will continue through the week, barring inclem-

Some current parking on each side of Ind. 32 and Union Street will be removed to allow adequate space for the additional turn lanes.

Cook said that 12 spots were lost around the intersection to make room for additional lanes.

INDOT will continue to monitor the intersection for any additional necessary improvements.

Carmel Redevelopment Commission to endure change in wake of red numbers At the Carmel City Council Meeting on Oct. 1, the Council adopted an amendment establishing the Carmel Redevelopment Dept.

The amendment, sponsored by Council President Rick Sharp, Parliamentarian/Chaplain Eric Seidensticker and Luci Snyder, Southeast Region representative, “…established the Department of Redevelopment to ensure redevelopment areas in need of reinvestment and underused areas funded through special benefit taxes that will benefit all taxable property within the boundaries of the City,” according to the redevelopment department’s Web site.

In short, that means the Carmel Redevelopment Commission has company and it is, as Carmel once knew it, no longer.

“The redevelopment department would be another department, beginning in January 2013,” Clerk-Treasurer Diana Cordray said of the new initiative.

According to President Sharp, the CRC Cordray failed to stay within its budget, accumulating a total debt in excess of, he estimates, $350 million – $195 million of which is deemed eligible for refinancing. That, Sharp and his Council mates determined, could not continue. “(The CRC) determined it would proceed with plans,” he said, “that were conceived by the Mayor to build out the Carmel Arts and Design District and the Carmel City Center as well as embellishments to the concert hall that was built.

(The CRC) exceeded its original budget on that project alone by some 6 percent.”

Additionally during the Oct. 1 meeting, the council heard the fifth reading of Ordinance D-2100-12 – “An Ordinance of the Common Council of the City of Carmel, Indiana, approving a lease between the City of Carmel Redevelopment Authority and the City of Carmel Redevelopment Commission to refinance certain obligations ($195,000,000).”

The reading was sponsored by Sharp and Snyder, and remains in the Finance, Administration and Re-use Committee.

The Council’s opinion

According to Sharp, the Council has a pretty unanimous opinion on the topic that led to the 7-0 passage of the amendment in question.

“What we have, in essence, from our point of view on the Council is this group of people conspired to create a means of circumventing the constitutional checks and balances of the fiscal bodies of the City of Carmel,” he said. “And then they now come to us having created a structure that is now not sustainable, and they are saying to the Council, ‘You have to take the copout,’ and that’s causing no small degree of angst to those of us on the council. It’s as if an unelected body has put the city in a position where the council is being told they have no choice but to place a potential liability of $200 million directly on the residential taxpayers of Carmel.”

According to Sharp, the CRC is, “In a position where they either get bailed out, or they in essence go bankrupt.”

“There was little concept for long range planning,” he said. “It was a short term thought of, ‘We’ve got to get this done,’ and now they’re reaching the consequences.”

Part of the problem, Sharp said, was that the CRC consistently spent too much money on consultants. Now, the council will have oversight in that area.

“The CRC spent an inordinate amount of money on consultants each year,” Sharp said. “And so we’re going to reign that in by saying, “Hire all of the consultants you want to the point where you’ve spent $25,000 in a particular year, and at that point you have to stop and come back to the council and prove to us that you should be paying more money.’”

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard initially expressed some hesitation at that idea, ostensibly because the Council is, in essence, usurping the statutory authority of the CRC. Sharp disagrees with that assessment.

“Our counterargument to that is, ‘Of course it’s not illegal.’ They can hire all the people Ballard they want, we are just putting a fiscal control on a governmental body that has proven it does not know how to exercise fiscal control.”

Brainard signed off on the amendment on Oct. 11.

Impact

Opponents of the amendment argue that the legislation will infringe on the CRC’s ability to do its job, but according to Sharp, the council simply is ensuring that it has the same power over the CRC as it does over other departments.

“Other departments cannot incur debt without the approval of the Council,” he said. “The CRC will no longer be able to do that, and its budget will be subject to the review of the council.

Its financial dealings will run through the Clerk-Treasurer’s Dept. It will function the same exact way as any other department in the city.”

Loose Ends

Although the council has ruled quite definitively, several outcomes are yet to be determined. For example, it is still not clear who will serve in the redevelopment department, and there even appears to be some confusion as to whether the entity actually was in existence before the recent amendment.

“The Carmel Redevelopment Dept. was established, I believe, in 1991,” Mayor Brainard said. “It was established at the same time the CRC was started. It is not a new department.”

What is known, though, is that the redevelopment department will serve as a support staff to the CRC. But even that fact leads to more uncertainty – it remains unclear what will happen with the current, non-elected members of the CRC, and if they will be replaced by volunteers or appointees by the Mayor.

According to Sharp, these things will be cleared up soon.

“I have spoken with the Mayor about it,” he said. “He is beyond reluctant to ask for these people to resign… But I think it’s a change that needs to be made.”

The series, presented by Printing Partners, is a collaboration between Heartland Truly Moving Pictures and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative.

While 3D special effects and violence rule most commercial films of today, there’s something uplifting about watching a Technicolor classic musical on the big screen featuring songs from The Great American Songbook. Who can resist the pairing of Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby in White Christmas gazing into each other’s piercing blue eyes, singing Irving Berlin’s songs of with their smooth sultry voices?

The breathtakingly beautiful costumes of classic musicals are also a feast for the eyes.

Viewing the films in the gorgeous surroundings of The Palladium is reminiscent of the ornate movie houses of long-ago.

Among the dizzying array of “reality” television shows is a spate of programming documenting the sale of expensive real estate. As it turns out, our family is acquainted with a regular on the one such broadcast called Selling New York, so we routinely tune in and follow the travails of the merry band of brokers, buyers and sellers. Part “Business Week” and part “Architectural Digest,” the homes being considered rarely fall below the million dollar mark and routinely range in the eight figures. As corresponds with such rarified air, the parties to the transaction are, well, interesting. Often confirming that considerable wealth affords for eccentricity even as it likewise pays for Bulgari, these programs also illustrate important points about human nature.

With negotiations underway, humans operate in a predictable and often emotional way.

The valiant brokers scramble to assemble a deal where the seller – often already realizing millions in profit on the property – is offended by the buyer – often more concerned with

the cosmetic than the structural – as these two parties work to find common ground and mutual benefit. The able realtor works to point to the shared success of the transaction – one is selling a property that is no longer suited to his needs and the other is finding a new home which accomplishes many of his requirements. Yet an inability or unwillingness to see the perspective of the other often takes the arrangement to impasse. When negotiations have stalled, a party will declare this is my best and final offer. It functions as an ultimatum, a last word and a gauntlet. Sometimes the tactic pushes the deal to close. Often, the parties walk away without consummation. Is this a failure of the system or simply the market at work? Are we mistaken to seek compromise when we might pursue brinksmanship?

We went to Mexico for a Beach Bash last Thursday night. Many of you joined us. Suffice it to state, refreshments were served and a good time was had by all. We’re talking about a figurative trip here. It was the annual signature fundraiser, Treasure our Children, for Chaucie’s Place, of which we were a sponsor. The Ritz Charles was buzzing with folks dressed in all manner of beach attire, although one of us asserted that his conservative suit was something he would wear to a beach. No matter. In the mix was sports writer Phil B. Wilson, who regaled us with hilarious tales from inside the Indianapolis Colts locker room. The tallying was not complete at press time, but our take was that the event did well. Silent- and live-auction items were snapped up, and the mood was festive. If you weren’t there, we urge you to join in next year. It’s a fun and meaningful evening for the Carmel facility that stands in the gap for abused and neglected youth. As we’ve written before, don’t for a minute believe it can’t happen here, because it does. We’re thankful that Chaucie’s Place exists, and it does through the tireless efforts of executive director Toby Stark, her always-in-motion staff and board of directors and a growing legion of volunteers. Speaking of which, Chaucie’s Place always could use more, and you can learn about those opportunities at www.chauciesplace.org. You don’t have to be a bazillionaire to make a difference. A the event, Stark told attendees that Chaucie’s Place has a way to leave a lasting tribute by purchasing a personalized brick for its Brick Garden. My son's thumbs are killing my phone plan Commentary by Danielle Wilson We received our cell phone bill the other day and I almost stroked out. It wasn’t the cost that surprised me. We pay for three phones, unlimited calls and data, so that amount is fairly set each month. No, my friends, it was the number of texts our teenage son sent last month that had me frantically searching for aspirin. Before I reveal the total, know that I came in at the lowest, with a whopping 71 messages. (I know this sounds low, but remember I have giant sausage fingers and an ancient flip phone. So really, sending even one text is an impressive feat worthy of praise. [Insert praise] Why, thank you!) My husband, Doo, was in the middle with approximately 175. He actually enjoys conversing on a phone and often will just call a person rather than text. Reason No. 37 why I love him.

When Doo asked me to estimate how many messages I thought our former Chez Wilson prison inmate had sent, I imagined a fairly high number and then doubled it, just to be on the safe side. “Two thousand,” I said. Doo snickered. I was way off, and not in the right direction. No, our dexterous heir texted . . . are you ready for this? . . . 10,982 times in one month.

Ten thousand, nine hundred, and eight-flippin’two! Almost 11,000 text messages! No wonder we had to ground him for poor grades. The kid is spending every waking hour, and then some,

texting on his stupid phone. And if your son knows my son, it means your child is, too!

We did the math. Our beloved first-born is texting, on average, 366 times daily. Assuming he sleeps at least eight hours, attends school for another eight, and is otherwise engaged in sports or chores or on the rare occasion, homework, for another two, he is sending 61 messages an hour. That’s one text every minute.

Seriously? And OK, I realize the average is less when you throw in weekends, but still. That’s a buttload of texting.

Or is it? We’ve been secretly surveying other families with teenagers (and quietly judging them.) Turns out 10,000 is certainly on the high end but not all that uncommon. Kids these days don’t spend hours talking on the phone like we did; they just text. And as one astute mom pointed out, many of their messages are single words or letters. “Hi.” “No.” “K.” So maybe I over-reacted a tad when I saw the amount, but I can assure you we will be changing our discipline methods next time they’re called for. Goodbye weekend incarceration, hello cell phone confiscation. Peace out.

Thoughts of a Democrat in Hamilton County Editor, Thank you for your “From the Backshop” column in Current (Oct. 2). It’s important to have your perspective, which likely represents the majority opinion of the readers in our communities, except maybe others, such as myself.

Therefore, for balance, I would like to provide another perspective in response to your questions as a left-leaning independent in the midst of “Republican country.”

On the subject of the General Motors “bailout,” I would suggest that the president was thinking of everyone when he “saved union jobs and crushed bond holders.” (Reminder, the money for this initiative was in the Troubled Asset Relief Fund, initially approved under the Bush administration.) First, by averting liquidations that would have caused catastrophic consequences across the U.S. auto industry and its suppliers at the height of the recession, he saved thousands of jobs, to say nothing of the cities and towns in states like Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, and the local businesses that would have also been impacted. Would they have avoided this loss if GM had been allowed to fail?

Unlikely.

On the subject of ObamaCare waivers, as you accurately state, the waivers covered 1,231 businesses and 4 million people, or about 3 percent of the working population, which have been exempted from the law’s restrictions on annual benefit caps. So your readers are clear, the law requires health plans to gradually raise their

benefit limits, and all annual limits will become illegal in 2014. That’s good for us, especially if we have a family member with a debilitating disease.

Lastly, on the subject of the Solyndra investment, was the president thinking of all entrepreneurs when “he” made that commitment (the commitment was made by others in the federal government, as I recall)? I would argue he was thinking of all entrepreneurs who are interested in high-risk, high-reward basic research, where the federal government invests approximately $150 billion (yes, billion) every year. … So, for breakthroughs, most entrepreneurs likely value and appreciate the federal government’s support.

Just remember this when a family member or friend develops a disease that requires an innovative new therapy to treat it effectively, and thank the federal government for some level of support in the basic research that made that drug possible.

There seems to be a pattern by conservative media when discussing President Obama’s record (and him personally) that it’s fair to leave out important information when providing a point of view. I’ll leave it to the readers armed with more background and added perspective to assess if the president was considering “everyone” in these particular concerns.

Views slipping into unseemly territory Editor, As an American citizen, in addition to a resident of Carmel, I’m concerned that the partisan views of the Current’s editors are slipping into unseemly territory. As the Pennsylvania I.D. law has been the subject of intense media scrutiny over the past 6 months, and examples of any meaningful fraud have not been brought forward, it has become clear the intent of the law was strictly partisan in nature: suppressing minority votes for President Obama. Not only do the Current editors make this point so did the majority leader of the Pennsylvania Congress. Does our community want to be

known for a newspaper that advocates the suppression of minority voting for the political gain of their preferred political party? Do the businesses that advertise in that paper want to be seen as supportive of that behavior? If the editors could produce substantive evidence that supported their claims, that would be a different story but absent that, it is obvious that it is not responsible journalism they are practicing. It is nothing but base political propaganda of a very un-American manner; propaganda that strikes at our most democratic values.

Not poorly informed Editor, The law requiring current photo IDs was halted due to the short amount of time remaining before the election and the amount of voters still waiting to receive their cards. After hearing accounts of delays by frustrated voters trying to update or obtain their IDs, Judge Simpson said in his ruling, “For this reason, I accept (the) argument that in the remaining five weeks before the general election, the gap between the photo IDs issued and the estimated need will not be closed.” Judge Simpson noted the matter will be revisited in December after this election. www.currentincarmel.com

Texas, Wisconsin and South Carolina also have postponed or blocked similar laws requiring ID, citing it violates the Voting Rights Act. Whoever wins PA will win because that is who the voters elected, not because hordes of democrat voters without identification organize themselves and show up at the polls November 6. As a side note, PA has never seen a case of in-person voter fraud. So, actually, I don’t think you do know why there was such opposition to photo IDs and the judge ruled as he did nor should you trust that we are as poorly informed as you two.

Accompaning your spouse to class reunions Commentary by Dick Wolfsie As you read this, I’m on my way to New York to celebrate my 47th high school reunion.

I know that 47 years seems an odd number to commemorate, but as I detailed in a previous column, our class president was struck by the notion that most everyone in the Class of ’65 was turning 65 this year. He thought this was some kind of weird once-in-a lifetime confluence of time and space. When I explained to Nick that the class of ‘64 had already turned 64 and that the class of 66 will soon turn 66 he seemed a bit surprised. “Gee, I never thought of it that way,” he admitted. This is a man with a master’s in art and a Ph.D. in engineering. So much for those artsy-smartsy degrees.

Before you go to a reunion, there are lots of decisions to make: what to wear; whether to dye your hair; which people deserve a hug versus a handshake; and, of course, how to have a conversation with someone who has just given you a huge embrace, but you have no idea who it is.

Probably the biggest decision is whether to bring your spouse. Mary Ellen will not know anyone one at my reunion, which is really very different from not remembering anyone. And so she agreed to go as long as we established a few ground rules. ”First, Dick, it is very important that you stand next to me and act like you are happy I am with you.”

“That sounds very familiar.”

“Yes, same deal as our wedding reception.”

“What else?”

“Well, after two hours of reminiscing about people I don’t know, I am allowed to politely excuse myself and go upstairs to our hotel room and go to sleep.”

“Wow, you remember all the wedding day rules. Maybe you are concerned that my friends will not be as impressed with you as your classmates were with me when I went to your reunion. I heard some ask you what it was like to have a trophy husband.”

“I’m sorry about that hearing problem you have. Actually, they wanted to know what it was like to have a goofy husband.

Mary Ellen was concerned whether the attire she chose for the evening was too conservative.

“Do you think some of the women will be wearing dresses that are revealing?”

I told her not to worry. Most of the ladies are 65-years-old, so there would be more covering up than showing off.

I hope I see Robin Stern again. She has remarried since our 25th reunion. If I work up the nerve, I may use that same joke as last time.

Maybe her new husband will think it’s funny.

Community Health Network, St.Vincent Health and six hospitals form alliance editorial@youarecurrent.com Two of the largest healthcare systems in Indiana will partner with six area hospitals that are part of the Suburban Health Organization to launch an accountable care consortium focusing on innovative healthcare solutions for employers and commercial markets.

In addition to Community and St.Vincent Health, the suburban hospitals that have joined the ACC include Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, Hancock Regional Hospital, Hendricks Regional Health, Henry County Hospital, Johnson Memorial Hospital and Witham Health Services “The ACC will commit to standardized measures and goals and creating an environment of shared innovation to achieve the best outcomes possible,” said SHO President Julie Carmichael.

“Benefits of participation in the ACC include shared infrastructure costs, common performance measures and reporting, standardization of clinical protocols and customization of work flow changes as it pertains to a chronic medical condition.”

The goal of the partnership is to improve the quality of patient care, while lowering the cost of healthcare delivery. The ACC will be a separate entity with its own board and CEO. It is not connected to a federal government initiative.

“As ACC partners, we remain separate organizations in a competitive healthcare environment,” said Community Health Network President and CEO Bryan Mills. “We recognize that everyone gains when we are able to deliver higher quality care, while controlling costs. Working collaboratively on our goals of reducing the cost of healthcare for defined populations, we believe we can achieve greater success together, than if we pursue these aims separately.”

The yet-unnamed ACC is a collaboration where all partners have formed a joint venture and have equal ownership. While not a merger, the ACC partners will bring together more than 30 hospitals throughout central Indiana. Physicians are leading the efforts to develop and focus on best practices. In addition, each partner has committed to utilizing their respective IT infrastructures for collecting clinical data, while working together to allow the sharing of information between provider members.

“Healthcare reform has required healthcare systems to think differently than in the past,” said Vincent Caponi, CEO of St.Vincent Health and Ascension Health Ministry Market Leader for Indiana and Wisconsin. “Through our ACC partnership, we share a vision of redesigning the healthcare model, and have similar approaches to the delivery of care for Indiana patients and families.”

Does Indiana allow spousal support or alimony after divorce?

Attorney Lanae Harden explains Indiana laws around spousal support after a divorce.

Indiana generally does not allow for permanent spousal support or alimony. However, the courts may order for temporary spousal maintenance payments while the divorce proceedings are in progress. There are three specific situations in which a court may order permanent or long-term spousal support/maintenance. A court may make the following findings concerning maintenance: • If the court finds a spouse to be physically or mentally incapacitated to the extent that the ability of the incapacitated spouse to support himself or herself is materially affected, the court may find that maintenance for the spouse is necessary during the period of incapacity, subject to further order of the court.

• If the court finds that: • a spouse lacks sufficient property, including marital property apportioned to the spouse, to provide for the spouse's needs; and • the spouse is the custodian of a child whose physical or mental incapacity requires the custodian to forgo employment; the court may find that maintenance is necessary for the spouse in an amount and for a period of time that the court considers appropriate.

Commentary by David Cain

Fear is the single greatest reason people act.

What you are afraid of is more motivating than your dreams and desires. We all like to dream, but it’s our fears that usually create a faster reality. You are more likely to act to sidestep pain then you are to satisfy your desires. Every action, every decision is rooted in your fears.

What keeps you up at night is more likely to get your attention; it’s not the things that please you.

It’s not saying we are always reactive, but we do react quickly to pains and problems. I get my car fixed when it’s broken. I go to the doctor when I’m sick. I create a budget when sales are down. I answer my wife when she raises her voice. So what is your biggest pain? It’s usually a fear, a fear of failure.

Failure is defined differently for everyone.

It might be failure to live up to your parent’s expectations, or your boss’s, or your spouse’s, or it might be failure to provide for your family in a manner you see fit. Failure is subjective, based on your individual perspective. However, avoiding it – personally and professionally – is your

biggest call-to-action. Your brain is at work 24/7 making you do things to avoid the big failure, your big failure. It wants to protect you from what you fear the most.

Finding a common failure that people have anxiety about is a rallying point for actions.

You gently remind someone of things they fear and they feel closer to you. Lines like, “You are probably thinking (insert anxiety) and I would be to…” allow you to let him know you have a window into their problems. When you get someone to reveal their anxiety and fear, you have earned trust, you have listened, you care and you have a better shot at having them take action. You have made a legitimate connection with them and with that true connection actions will follow. Actions follow because you now can solve their problems because you understand them. You can be a real partner. Your customer’s pain can lead to your mutual gain.

Nature is a bountiful provider of some of the most beautiful accessories for home décor. The season is replete with amazing decorating possibilities that literally fall at your feet.

Autumn decorating can be as simple as combining elements found in the garden, the backyard, along a wooded path, and treasures from the grocery store or farmer’s market.

When combined with prized possessions that are tucked behind cabinet doors, these ordinary fruits of the season can take on an air of simple beauty.

Whatever gifts of nature are selected for decorating, pumpkins, gourds, apples, pears or acorns, they must be used in abundance. In classic mythology, the traditional fall accessory, the cornucopia, is described as a goat horn containing food and drink in endless supply. An urn or vase can serve as a stylized cornucopia if it is placed on its side while the fruits of the season spill on to the table with a splendid demeanor.

One of my favorite autumn accessories is the white pumpkin. Instead of carving triangle eyes and a mangled smile, think of the possibilities of this decorating container.

Imagine a table setting complete with a pumpkin used as a vase teeming with fresh fall flowers or as a candleholder completely filled with candles. When carved and cleaned, this autumn treasure can even double as a tureen for harvest soups.

Forgive me for asking, but …

When asked “What’s Jesus done for you?” many Christians quickly answer, “He died on the cross to forgive my sins.”

True enough.

But if we honestly believe that answer – that Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins – why do so many of us still pray daily for God’s forgiveness? Forgiveness has already happened, and that idea is as plainly and clearly presented as any in the Bible. Over and over (Romans 6:10, Hebrews 7:27, 10:2, Jude 1:3, etc.) the New Testament instructs us that Jesus died “once for all” – for all mankind, for the forgiveness of all sin, and for the restoration of all creation.

My e-mail pen pal Bob recently opined that asking Jesus for forgiveness again and again is akin to asking Jesus to go to the cross again and again. Jesus has been there, done that, and is sitting in Heaven with the scars to prove it.

We’re forgiven, already, not by our request, but

by God’s grace and Jesus on the cross.

In the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly offers forgiveness (Matthew 9:2), claims the authority to forgive (Matthew 9:6), and commands us to forgive (Matthew 18:35).

But humanity asking “for forgiveness” is not something Jesus ever mentions. Nor is it something mankind ever thought of asking for. The Jews of Jesus’ time believed their divine deliverer would provide spectacular, triumphant, and

righteous military power, not humble, servanthearted, and righteous forgiveness of sinners.

Jesus tells us to pray, repent, be baptized, and follow him (Mark 1). For our salvation, we are to love God, trust Jesus, rely on the Holy Spirit, and both love and forgive our neighbor. But from the cross, our forgiveness through Christ is eternal and ongoing – a “done deal.” Continuing to ask Jesus “for forgiveness” seems ungracious, tantamount to doubting His word, His promise, His authority, His power, His love.

But still … we sin, feel guilty, and reflexively pray for forgiveness. Isn’t it far better to recognize and repent of sin, and then – with faith and perseverance – strengthen our relationship with the one risen Lord? We do that by building, growing, learning, nurturing and trusting in Jesus Christ: that He is who He says He is, has done what He says He has done, and will do what He has promised to do.

My teacher George recently remarked that many Christians are addicted to praying for forgiveness. I’d never heard it put quite like that.

Certainly, prayer is good, but our prayers should reflect our total trust in the grace of Christ Jesus.

For what is grace if not forgiveness?

Steeple chase: Obelisks objects of the eternal Commentary by Don Knebel Among the many delights of a trip to Egypt are visits to its many well-preserved temples, including the one in Luxor typically seen at night. But no matter how well preserved, the temples are all missing at least one of the matched pair of obelisks, some more than 100 feet tall, which once flanked their entrances.

The missing obelisks were not lost – they are in Europe, some standing in front of famous churches. And while the obelisks are missing from Egypt, their spiritual descendants are in front of places of worship around the world.

For ancient Egyptians, the gently obelisks’ sloping sides and gold-plated crowning pyramids probably symbolized the paths of sun rays streaming toward earth, representing the connections between the sun god and the temple. To reflect the eternal nature of those connections, Egyptians carved their obelisks from a single piece of granite, weighing hundreds of tons.

The most suitable quarry was along the Nile River in Aswan. Aswan visitors can still see the famous “unfinished obelisk,” abandoned thousands of years ago when a crack was discovered in the granite, making it useless for its intended purpose.

When Romans conquered Egypt in the first century B.C., they were so enamored of the obelisks that they pulled them down from the temples and sent them to Rome on specially

Italicize Italian, look fancy Commentary by Jordan Fischer

Have you ever heard someone speaking in another language and just had a gut feeling that he or she was using poor grammar?

I’m kidding, of course. I was, however, lucky enough to sample a veritable buffet of international languages recently while visiting San Francisco. In honor of my trip to the Bay City, I thought I’d talk this week about how to properly include a bit of foreign flair in your writing.

Now, when you’re speaking and you want to throw in a foreign word, you just need to make sure you pronounce it correctly – or that no one nearby will know if you don’t. In writing, however, we have to worry about the presentation.

Readers easily can become frustrated with words they don’t recognize unless we do something to let them know that we’ve dipped into our exotic lexicon. The way that we do that is with italics.

One of my favorite passages from Mark Twain’s classic, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” involves a lively debate between Huck and his runaway slave companion Jim over the phrase “Parlez-vous français” Literally translated, it means, “Do you speak French?” While that’s neither here nor there, I thought I’d include it for the good of the order.

we’re not in Kansas anymore, so to speak. The rule holds true for words from all languages.

Common international loans into our lexicon include words like magna cum laude for exceptional college graduates, habeas corpus, which requires sufficient cause for the government to lock you, and one of Pepé Le Pew’s favorites, je ne sais quoi, or “I don’t know what.” The latter phrase is typically used to describe something indescribable.

For certain words which have become very common in everyday usage, it’s alright to forgo the italics. While what constitutes “very common” is subjective, my list would include phrases like prima donna, faux pas, status quo and pro bono. This can be setting-specific, too: If you’re a law student, for example, there’s probably no need to italicize Latin words like de jure and a posteriori; and a musician would be pretty comfortable with non-italicized Italian phrases like andante, accelerando and da capo. As with all good writing, the key is to consider your audience. If they are unlikely to see the phrase on a regular basis, hit that italics key. As an added bonus, throwing in italicized words now and then makes you seem fancy.

Plants that pleasantly survived harsh summer Commentary by Holly Lindzy Every year I like to review what worked well for me and what didn’t. This season was unprecedented regarding heat and precipitation so if something performs well, I’m unusually impressed. It’s times like these when true colors shine through.

My first award of valiance goes to my clump Serviceberry. After five years in my landscape, it received no additional water. A risk, I know, but I like to test things. It’s a native so I let it show me what it’s made of and not once did it balk at the conditions. Now, as to whether or not it will give me some fall color is a whole different Oprah.

Second, I think I’ve solidified the spot for favorite annual. Dragonwing begonia doled out the blooms all season long and yawned into a beautiful space in my container garden. Perfect green foliage accessorized with prolific bloom. I just can’t stop admiring it.

Snapdragons were amazing at the start of the season, so I must add an honorable mention there. And the happiest of all the annuals this season had to have been annual vinca. . . hands down, a heat hoarding monster with effortless pizzazz.

Perennial-wise, I’m a smidge disappointed.

Even fuss free Rudbeckia sulked over the extended absence of moisture. If I had to choose Planting bulbs – It’s time to get those bulbs in the ground. Remember that quality plant bulbs do matter, don’t let October slip away before planting spring-blooming bulbs and dig the whole two to three times the height of the actual bulb. –bhg. com

Drought. Tolerant.

That being said, I must mention that “tolerant” doesn’t mean “proof.” That goes for anything you can think of.

New front porch increases curb appeal

Commentary by Larry Greene

ORIGINAL EXTERIOR: This home is located in the Crooked Stick subdivision on the west side of Carmel and was built in the early 1980’s. The current owner has lived in the home for 17 years.

REASONS FOR REMODELING: Why remodel? “When we originally bought the house it had a Tudor look to it, even though it was not a Tudor-style home. We removed the trim 5 years ago, but it looked too plain. We wanted to dress up the front of the house, and give it more curb appeal. I wanted people’s blood pressure to drop when they came up to the house!”

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS: The homeowner wanted to add elements of detail to the front façade. “My favorite part is the columns. The architectural details in the double columns and larger trim pieces gave the house the bit of wow I was looking for.” The existing vertical wood trim around the windows was removed and replaced with new painted cedar trim.

STONE WALK WAY: The stone walkway is a favorite, too. New stone pavers were installed and flanked with 24” light posts wrapped in stone. The steps are topped with limestone and the face of the porch was covered with decorative stone to complement the existing brick.

PORCH DETAILS: The existing porch, front door, steps and walkway were removed. A new enlarged porch foundation was built including a new shed roof with 8x8 cedar wood posts. The new porch includes rough-sawn cedar trim, beaded plywood ceiling and stone-wrapped columns with limestone caps. The new

NEW ENTRY DOOR: The existing front door and sidelights were removed and new double doors were installed with ¾ glass. The owner commented, “The new doors not only help welcome our guests, but also add more light into the front hallway.”

FAVORITE FEATURES: The owner commented on her favorite features. “The house is no longer plain and unwelcoming.”
