Soskin: Peace through art

By Gary Boskovich • news@currentincarmel.com In many ways Katherine Soskin considers art a window to the soul. Soskin, who considers herself an abstract Impressionist diversion and colorist has been painting for more than 25 years.

Photography is another one of her talents. Her artwork and photography has been exhibited at Clowes Hall, the Jewish Community Center in Indianapolis, and at the Carmel Library. Some of her works are on display at the Earth Fare store on Range Line Road until Oct. 15 with the theme of “Peace Throughout the World.”

Growing up just north of Chicago in Highland Park, Soskin traveled east to attend college in Connecticut at Hartt College of Music which is now a part of the University of Hartford. Although she majored in voice at Hartt, Soskin always enjoyed all the arts.

Some health challenges earlier in Soskin’s life stirred her artistic juices and spurred her creativity. She often branches out to various other interests such as singing, writing, and poetry but gravitated toward painting when she was ill. To put it in perspective, Soskin had this to say, “I use my creativity in whatever I do. I have to be creative; it’s essential to who I am whether it’s making dinner or listening to someone’s problems and helping them, I like to use my creativity.”

Soskin is inherently a spiritual person and sees the good in people. She freely shares her view.

There is a spiritual theme in Soskin’s artwork too.

She paints what she has experienced in her life’s travels. Her pieces have captured the grandeur of those travels including landscape paintings from New Zealand, Ireland, Israel, the Galapagos Islands and other places.

From Sweden with love

By Lee Kelso • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel’s internationally famous roundabouts are helping Derek and Petra Sutton feel at home here in Indiana. They are daily culture reminders of the couple’s life in Sweden.

The Suttons recently moved from Stockholm to Carmel after Derek signed on as the statewide engineer for Aqua Indiana, an Indianapolis company that works with public drinking water and wastewater.

“We moved back to the Indianapolis area to be close to my family,” Derek said. “Carmel felt like the best fit for us due to our passion for enjoying the outdoors. Carmel has done a great job of building biking and walking trails similar to those in Europe and around Stockholm. You feel more comfortable being out where there is separation from the heavy traffic here in Indiana.”

Derek had already established his career in water systems engineering when a chance meeting changed his future. While vacationing in Florida, he met Petra, a native of Finland, who was enjoying sunshine over the Christmas holiday. Love blossomed, adventure called, and Derek found himself working as a consultant on water projects in Sweden.

Sweden, approximately the size of California, is home to 9.7 million people.

“They are predominant in the suburbs of Stockholm,” he said.

His engineer’s brain appreciates the continuous traffic flow and the fact that roundabouts slow traffic to safer speeds.

“We do miss Sweden’s public transportation.

The bus, train, rail and subway system around Stockholm is awesome. You can live without a car there,” he said.

And at restaurants, Derek said, “Swedish food has more fish than the typical Hoosier menu.

I did miss Mexican, though. Indiana has better Mexican (food).”

Big changes at Monon Center

Carmel Clay Parks officials diversion said the center has been a huge success – offering a wide variety of activities on a cost-neutral basis.

Now they are looking to expand.

Some improvements already have been installed, such as new classes, newly painted lines on the basketball courts and elliptical machines that generate their own electricity.

But more is expected, such as an expanded presence in the center’s east building and possibly an enclosure around the Flow-Rider outdoor surfing simulator.

“We are always looking for the next new thing,” Carmel Clay Parks Director Mark Westermeier said. “We want to be a little different.”

When the MCC first opened, some pundits criticized the project saying there’s no way that membership fees could support the massive building’s costs. They claimed taxpayer subsidies would always be needed to prop up the facility.

And while it took a few years to achieve the goal, the MCC operates on a cost-neutral basis, which means that it’s self-supporting through its own revenue.

Parks board member Joshua Kirsh recalls how staff members went to a national meeting to learn about cost recovery only to find that Carmel was way ahead of the curve.

“They were being told that you achieve 16 to 30 percent cost recovery and then you pat yourself on the back,” he said. “So very early on we realized we were going to have to be innovators in this market and lo and behold our staff has done it. People have no idea that we have the best parks and our community center doesn’t cost the taxpayers. They have no idea.”

Some of the innovative ways to bring in revenue include creating private cabanas at the MCC pool where swimmers can rent the spaces with ceiling fans, coolers, speakers, screens and electrical outlets.

said this was a great idea because it involves a skill, unlike going down a slide, so it encourages people to keep coming back to master it. It’s become so popular that they offer classes and even hosted a pro-am tournament that brought in surfers from all over the Midwest.

Now, Westermeier is looking at a way to offer this amenity year-round. While it wouldn’t be financially feasible to build a second Flow Rider indoors, he said they have spoken to architectural firms to see if there’s an affordable and effective way to enclose it.

Another innovative idea was adding a system called ReRev technology to 12 elliptical machines to help generate electricity from exercise. Installing the units will cost $12,000 but they expect half that money back in energy savings in just a year. So after two years, the technology will be paid off and will be generating added revenue.

“We can get a payback on a machine that would usually cost us money,” Westermeier said.

Of course, there’s also talk of slightly raising some membership prices as demand increases.

Westermeier said it’s tricky because the center wants to stay competitive and offer the amenities that members desire, but it’s also part of their mission to provide the best value possible.

The MCC has increased so much in popularity that Westermeier said there is talk of expanding fitness facilities.

“We’re completely full, so to increase new revenues we need to expand, mostly our fitness area, mostly in the east side of the building,” he said.

Nyers key to Dads’ Club success

From its modest beginning in 1959, the Carmel Dads’ Club has grown into a powerful feeder system for the state’s most book signing successful high school athletic program.

“When it started, I had no idea it would grow into what it is today,” Dick Nyers said. “It’s thriving very well.”

The Carmel Dads’ Club has more than 12,000 youth playing annually. Carmel High School has captured a record 119 Indiana High School Athletic Association state titles.

A group of Carmel fathers approached Nyers, then the Carmel High School football coach, about getting his help in starting the youth league in 1958. He obliged and the rest is history.

Nyers, who turned 80 on Oct. 8, was the guest of honor on Oct. 4 at the Carmel VFW for the book signing for “A Town of Champion: A History of the Carmel Dads’ Club” which was written by Carmel residents Dan Chapman and Pam Otten, both 1970 Carmel High School graduates. As a teenager, Otten had served as a babysitter for Nyers’ children.

Nyers, who lives in Columbus, Ind., coached at Carmel from 1958 to 1967, compiling a 69-24-5 record.

“I enjoyed every one of the 10 years I was here,” Nyers said.

sistant coach at Ball State for two years and then was head coach at his alma mater Indiana Central (now University of Indianapolis) for two years. He later coached at Edinburgh High School.

Nyers, an Indianapolis Manual High School four-sport standout, played two seasons as a defensive back and kickoff returner for the Baltimore Colts.

“I got hurt the last year I was there and it was time (to quit),” Nyers said. “I was the smallest man (5-9, 170 pounds) in the National Football League. The one thing that I was blessed with was speed. There is no replacement for speed.”

Nyers, while playing running back, caught the first NFL touchdown pass from Johnny Unitas in a preseason game when both were rookies in 1956. Nyers roomed with Hall of Fame receiver Raymond Berry.

Brainard talks past, future

When people talk about Carmel’s future, Mayor Jim Brainard often likes to point to the past.

In his annual “State of government the City” speech, Brainard admits that Carmel didn’t have beaches or majestic mountains to build on.

It used to be nothing but farm land.

As a comparison, he showed a slide of the Eiffel Tower. He said he believes there’s no reason Carmel can’t have the same vibrancy of Paris, France.

“No river. No ocean. And they did just fine,” he said.

Brainard spoke to a packed crowd at the Carmel Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Ritz Charles on Oct. 8, outlining and somewhat defending his vision for developing Carmel’s downtown core.

He showed slides of blighted, vacant shopping centers and underutilized properties that have now been transformed into destinations such as the Carmel City Center, the Indiana Design Center, The Center for the Performing Arts, Sophia Square and the Carmel Arts & Design District.

And much of this redevelopment has been created using tax increment financing, a method of borrowing against anticipated new tax revenue for 25 years. In most cases, the city or developer can issue bonds and use TIF money to repay that debt.

In Brainard’s opinion, that hasn’t been the case and it won’t be. He defended his methods, citing low taxes. He projects that $27 million in TIF money will be left after all the bonds are repaid.

“Through public-private partnerships and the use of TIF we have built a new city landscape with mixed uses and a concentration of activities that creates a vibrant central downtown for our city,” he said.

Brainard defended using city money to build parking garages because it helps create density in Carmel’s downtown and avoids sprawling lots.

It also encourages private developers to build taller buildings.

“It’s easy to visualize that when we build a five-story building, we receive five times the property tax revenue than a single-story building would pay,” he said.

City Councilor Rick Sharp, who said he is considering a mayoral run against Brainard, said he thought the speech was what he would expect: upbeat and positive.

“It was a captivating description of the past eight or nine years,” Sharp said. “Some of the facts were off a bit, most notably about TIF revenue and how much was produced. I think it glossed over some of the situations we need to address in Carmel.”

Johnson Addition seeks to become conservation district

An older neighborhood near the Carmel Arts & Design District is seeking protected status as a “conservation district” government in order to prevent large, out-of-place homes in its part of town.

The petition has sparked debate. Some residents said the petitioners don’t speak for the majority and they don’t want the red-tape associated with such rules.

Now it’s up to the Carmel City Council to determine, “the wishes of the majority.”

Many residents in the Johnson Addition neighborhood, which is south of Main Street, west of 4th Avenue and east of Guilford Road, have expressed concerns that neighbors could sell their vintage 1950s-style homes, demolish the mostly single-story dwellings and construct huge multistory behemoths that could endanger the character of their beloved community.

“It’s the old neighborhood,” said Clay Township Trustee Mary Eckard, one of the neighbors who filed the petition. “We don’t want to see it change and we don’t want to move. You can’t recreate what’s been here for more than 50 years.”

While no developer is currently planning such a project, neighbors felt strongly enough to come to the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission to ask to become a historic neighborhood.

“We told them, you don’t want that,” said City Councilor Luci Snyder, a member of the preservation commission. “Nobody wants to live in a historic district because you can’t even paint your house a certain color. So we tried to advise them that a conservation district might be a better

way to go.”

Neighbors submitted a petition to be a conservation district, and the board unanimously approved this petition. It will go before the City Council on Oct. 20.

If they are approved to be a conservation district, then after three years the neighborhood would automatically become a historic district unless the proper paperwork is filed to prevent that.

Although many neighbors have strong opinions about the conservation district, some residents claim they weren’t properly notified and that this is being forced upon them.

“From what it seems like there are five or six people who really want this and most people are undecided or against it,” said Michael Houser, who has lived on Sherman Drive since 2010. “But they just keep ramming it through. I just don’t think it’s necessary and it could hurt us in the long run. It is possible people won’t even do upkeep on their houses because they will be so afraid of all of the rules.”

Eckard, who disagrees with Houser, said she believes the rules won’t be Draconian. She said it will only mean that residents can’t move a house, demolish a house or make major alterations without consulting with the preservation commission. She said she also is confident that she has a majority.

“We have had well-attended meetings and we’ve gone door to door,” she said. “We’ve collected the signatures and we believe at least more than half – if not more – of the residents are excited about this.”

CRC unveils plans for parking garage

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com Leaders from the Carmel Redevelopment Commissions unveiled their vision for phase two of the Carmel City Center, indevelopment cluding a parking garage which would be paid for through a city-backed bond.

In order to dissuade concerns about taking out more debt, CRC Director Corrie Meyer laid out several layers of protection to avoid financial risk to the city. Most prominent of these protections is a guarMeyer antee from Pedcor, the City Center developer, to make up the shortfalls.

But some city councilors were concerned about the final layer of protections: a special benefits tax.

“Well, the reality is that a city-backed bond means the potential of a special benefits tax,” Meyer said. “I live in Carmel and I certainly don’t want that happening. … So what we have done is worked with the developer to develop a series of stop gaps, so there are several guarantees before a special benefits tax would ever have to be issued.”

The special benefits tax would be added to all households to help pay off city debt. It could be as small as $5 a household. To some people, such as Mayor Jim Brainard, it’s a mechanism

in order to get a better interest rate, but not something that is likely to actually happen. Lenders see the strong affluence in Carmel and that such a tax would easily cover the costs so it provides security. Brainard and many who agree with him, such as councilors Ron Carter, Kevin “Woody” Rider, Sue Finkam, have said they do not fear that a special benefit tax would be instituted.

Yet others, such as City Councilor Rick Sharp, said the special benefits tax could be a reality if irresponsible spending occurs.

“It’s not something to igSharp nore,” he said. “We are the fiscal body and we cannot say yes to everything.”

Carter has said that worrying about the special benefits tax is a “Chicken Little” situation where certain city councilors are trying to get everyone worried about a non-issue because of elections.

It’s important to note that the special benefits tax is the final protection in a long line of guarantees to make sure the city can pay its debt.

The breakdown goes as such, in the proper order: • Tax increment finance money would pay back the bonds • Each building will be individually guaranteed

by Pedcor if there are TIF shortfalls • A reserve account built up through “pay-

ment in addition to taxes” • P edcor guarantees to make up any TIF shortfalls for the aggregate • If an issue arrives with Pedcor, there’s a “letter of credit” from Pedcor that can be used • Other city resources, if City Council chooses • Special benefits tax The TIF money would help support city-paid infrastructure, including not only the parking garage, but sidewalks, a gathering area and Spanish stairs.

The parking garage would be owned by the city, but maintenance is paid for by Pedcor. This is guaranteed for life and even if Pedcor sold the land the new owners would have to honor this deal.

The parking garage would have 470 to 625 spaces with 75 percent of those dedicated for public use. The wide range is because if the city gets a better interest rate on its bonds it might add more parking spaces. The cost could be $17 million, but that hasn’t been finalized.

The next step is for the City Council to vote on whether to create new TIF districts for this project so funds can be captured. If that is approved, then Meyer expects bond allocations in November with construction starting as early as 2015. The parking garage would be first on the list with each of the 10 plus mixed-used buildings undergoing construction through 2017.

What it means: After going through workshops where each department presented its needs for the coming year, Mayor Jim Brainard has drafted a budget of $131,020,555. “It does what the city needs and it doesn’t raise taxes,” he said. What’s next: No action taken on this item. Tabled until Nov. 3 to give councilors a chance to meet and discuss the budget before any action.

What happened: The Carmel City Council passed four ordinances regarding annual pay raises for government employees.

What it means: Every salary was set for the upcoming budget with a 2 percent pay increase to account for cost of living increases.

What’s next: The ordinances were adopted and will go into effect.

What happened: There was a public hearing for the Grannan Grove planned unit development.

What it means: The developer wishes to rezone 9.774 acres to build 14 residential lots with a common area at 3739 W. 141st St. This area is south of and adjacent to 141st Street and west of Shelborne Road, near the Edgewood Neighborhood.

What’s next: The bill was sent to the Land Use, Annexation and Economic Development committee which meets next on Oct. 28.

What Happened: The City Council voted 4-3 to remove a roundabout at Carmel Drive from the city’s comprehensive plan.

What it means: This particular roundabout has sparked quite a debate. Some City Councilors don’t want it because they said they believe it hurts businesses if motorists are driving too fast by their storefronts. Others said that it would improve traffic flow while increasing customers because they wouldn’t avoid the area due to congestion. The roundabout would be paid for through federal money and some say it’s a critical component for redeveloping the former home of Party Time Rental, a vacant building on Range Line Road. Councilors previously removed the roundabout from the document, but the Carmel Plan Commission put it back in, necessitating this ordinance.

What’s next: The roundabout won’t be in the city’s comprehensive plan, which isn’t to say it could never be constructed, but it could deter such plans.

Paul Richard Lipps, 71, of Carmel, passed away suddenly, Thursday at St. Vincent Hospital. Paul was born August 20, 1943 in Indianapolis, the son of Paul and Leona (Losey) Lipps. Paul was devoted to his children’s sports teams and activities, and served as youth group leader at his church. He was an avid Colts, racing, and Cincinnati Reds fan, and loved boating. Paul attended Purdue University and found his passion in construction and developing neighborhoods. He was a contractor and developer, developing Smokey Hollow, Carrington Woods and Smokey Ridge neighborhoods. He also built the Education Wing of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church where he was a longtime member.

Paul along with his wife Kay, co-founded The Elvis Fantasy Fest that raised over $300,000 for Porter County Special Olympics. He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather, William McNeely.

State excise officer arrested in Hamilton Co. news@currentincarmel.com A State Excise Police officer was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated in Hamilton County. According to a Sheriff’s Office report, Brett J. Brandenburg, 43 of Indianapolis, was driving his state-issued vehicle in the area of State Road 37 and 141st Street at 1:54 a.m. on Oct. 4 when he failed to signal his turn as required by state law. A deputy then observed Brandenburg’s vehicle weaving down the

roadway.

His blood alcohol content was greater than 0.154.

Brandenburg was not on-duty at the time of his arrest. He was released from the Hamilton County Jail after posting a $2,500 bond and scheduling a court date for later this month.

“Officer Brandenburg was immediately assigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the internal investigation,” stated Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Brandon Thomas.

The smallest gallery Commentary by Jeff Worrell It’s small, but not too small. Just small enough to earn the prestigious moniker World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery acvolunteerism cording to the “Guinness Book of World Records.”

Operated by the all-volunteer Carmel Arts Council, it is nestled in the heart of the Carmel Arts & Design District. The fairytale-like cottage boasts some of the finest work by local artists who still line up for recess and are studying multiplication tables.

This month, the gallery has on display amazing art from Cherry Tree Elementary School. Under the inspiration and tutelage of art teacher Kate Ristow, the students have produced an exhibit to whisk your imagination to new places.

The first graders drew inspiration from Piet Mondrian’s art form called “Neoplasticism.” Mondrian’s art uses grids of horizontal and vertical black lines which are filled in with primary colors.

The first grade’s “Mondrian Animals” were created by using primary color markers. Thank goodness the artists were on hand to explain.

The Cherry Tree second grade worked on a “Creative Line” exercise by creating “Crazy Hair” drawings with sharpies. They also made “patterned giraffes” in crayon and watercolor paint. Giraffes of every shape and size. The fourth-grade students fashioned “Name Tangles” in markers and crayons

while the fifth graders immersed themselves in to “Opt Art.” Hand drawings in marker and Leapin Lizzards in oil pastel.

This past Sunday, artists held an open house and more than 350 people visited the gallery not to just see the amazing work, but to also enjoy the new renovations. The interior of the gallery has been renovated and updated to better show off the traveling masterpieces which grace its walls throughout the year.

Cherry Tree is not the only school with an exhibit now on display. Although the gallery is small, there is still room for middle school art teachers, Michelle Proffitt, Gwen Gaw, Leslie Ward and Lisa Rettig to also display their students’ work. And, in a special area of the gallery, an international flavor will greet you. Student art from Xiangyang, China along with Carmel High School art interpretations of the Chinese Mooncake Festival are joined by student art from Kawachinagano, Japan; both Carmel sister cities. October hours are every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All exhibits are free and open to the public. Critics proclaim, “It is a must see.” Good Day, Carmel.

Carmel business owner serves up tastes from her homeland

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Tina Jesson recalls when she first thought of having her own tea room.

“When I was about 20, I went to a really lovely tea room in Yorkshire,” the Great Britain native said. “I thought I’d really like to own something like this one day, maybe before cover story I’m 50 run a tea room like this before I retire.”

The 48-year-old Jesson made it with room a little to spare. Tina’s Traditional Old English Kitchen opened officially on Oct. 1 at 30 N. Range Line Rd., inside the same building as the Simply Sweet Shoppe. The tea room, whose motto is “A Slice of Britain on a Plate," had been open for few days prior to the official opening so customers could get a peek during the Carmel’s International Arts Festival on Sept. 27-28.

Jesson moved to the United States from the Derbyshire region of England in 2008 with her husband David, a Rolls-Royce Aero Engines employee. Her husband has worked for Rolls-Royce for 25 years.

“He came home and said ‘Tina I found the perfect job. The problem is it’s in America,’” she said.

The toughest thing for Tina was leaving their two grown children in England. The second-toughest was she longed for some of her favorite foods. That, she said, she could change herself.

“I always enjoyed cooking and baking for the family,” Jesson said. “Then in 2011, I started baking scones and things we can’t get [in the United States] that well and started selling them at farmers markets in the area. By my second year, I was catering tea parties.”

For several months, she set up a tea service in a Danville restaurant during the afternoon.

“But I was dying to get my hands on my own space,” Jesson said. “This became available and we have this lovely building.”

Carmel resident Leslie Hoggatt, individual gifts officer for The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, said the tea room is a nice addition to the Carmel Arts & Design District. Hoggatt said she first met Jesson when she gave a talk on the healthy benefits of tea at the center. The talk was held in the conjunction with the BBC Orchestra visit in February 2013.

“Since then I’ve gone to some of her afternoon teas she used to

host at the SoHo Cafe,” Hoggatt said. “The food is always homemade. Her teas are really good, too. I’m very excited she opened up here. I have a feeling I’m going to bring lots of our donors and ladies here for teas and lunches. I think it will be good for the area. I’m a huge Anglophile. I love anything British.”

“We don’t want to make it too overwhelming for people,” owner Tina Jesson said. “But at the same time we’d like to give people a variety depending on the time of the year. If they are suffering from a cold, we find there is a good tea for that. There are health benefits from tea and we can educate people on that as well.”

Andrew Lannerd, general manager for Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, is also a big fan. Lannerd, an Indiana native who has lived in London, met Jesson at one of her tea services.

“I have a very big passion for England,” said Lannerd, who lives in Indianapolis.

So naturally he plans to make the trip to Carmel quite often.

“It’s very nice to have her in my own backyard,” Lannerd said.

“This is perfect. Being in Carmel and in the Arts District is a place where people will appreciate afternoon tea.”

Lannerd, who collects memorabilia on the Royal Family, and Jesson headed a tour to England to visit country homes and tea rooms this past summer.

Jesson and her husband moved to Carmel when they moved to the United States in 2008. After a nasty ice storm that first winter, they decided to move closer to her husband’s job and currently live in Brownsburg. She said they might move closer to Carmel now that the tea room has opened.

Carmel is the perfect fit for the tea room, Jesson said.

“There are a lot of British people here and there are people here that are perhaps a little more sophisticated,” Jesson said. “They know about hot tea and perhaps have traveled to England. They’ve traveled a lot more.”

Jesson has more than 1,000 people on her newsletter list that goes out about every month and more than 600 likes on Facebook.

“Now it’s just trying to get known in the Carmel area a little more,” she said. “We are taking bookings and have dates set all the way to April of next year.”

Often her customers have been Great Britain natives or those who have had relatives from there.

“We have people looking for the things they miss when you are taken out of your home environment,” Jesson said. “Food, friends and family is what we try to do.”

The tea room has seven employees, including three full-time. There are two other British workers, including her assistant manager, Claire Hollenbaugh.

“If people come in and ask for tea, I’m probably going to be here,” Jesson said.

If not, Hollenbaugh likely will be.

“So you’ll get to hear a British accent and obviously taste some really good British food,” Jesson said.

Charity begins … after taxation Here’s an eye-opener that sailed across the transom last week: Various reports indicate that although the income gap continues to widen, the richest among us are doling out less to not-for-profits while the lesser-advantaged and middle class are forking over larger shares of their incomes. All of this is courtesy of the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which did an all-encompassing analysis of IRS data (which we presume to be truthful). The Chronicle said Americans who earned $200,000 or more reduced the share they gave to charity by 4.6 percent from 2006 to 2012. Those earning less than $100,000 donated 4.5 percent more. Analysis was based on tax returns filed

by Americans who itemize their deductions, including their charitable gifts. Rankings were compiled for states and metropolitan areas based on the ratio of contributions to adjusted gross income. Utah was the most generous, donating $65.60 to charity for every $1,000 earned. Indiana was 17th, donating $32.60 for every $1,000 earned in 2012. That was up from $31.70 in 2006. Indianapolis ranked fifth among metro areas in the fastest-growing generosity category. Indy-area residents donated an average of $32.20 out of every $1,000 earned in 2012, up 5.2 percent since 2006. It’s funny that there was no mention of any potential impact the higher tax rates for the wealthy may have had. We wonder what those charities have to say about how President Barack Obama, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada) and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) believe it’s more important to send money to Washington instead of to the not-for-profits.

No hicks or rednecks here Commentary by Terry Anker As the initial draft of this column is written, we are careening down the highway returning from a highly successful Indy Chamber Leadership Exchange with the City of Nashville, Tenn. Certainly, these trips afford much learning about the specifics of how another community manages to pay for stadiums, deal with crime and a plethora of other matters. And as important as the many PowerPoints and classes attended, the exchanges allow for much deeper connections to be formed with members of our own delegations. Time together away from the routine of daily life, permits a more clear-headed and attentive interaction.

Having been privileged to participate in more than a handful of these kinds of conversations these many decades, some common themes emerge. Economic development is difficult and must be pursued with a steady and innovative hand. Education is difficult and must be pursued with a steady and innovative hand. Public safety is difficult and must be pursued with a steady and innovative hand.

But also, the way in which a community conceives of itself matters. Many were eager to claim that Nashville is not for rednecks. What we saw supported this supposition. I was reminded of the many encounters with our own community leaders who seemed to start each conversation that “Indianapolis is not for hicks.” Likewise, this supposition is correct. But why do we, both great towns, start our dialogue from a defensive posture? The first day of law school, promptly after we are taught how to bill in six-minute increments, we are instructed that whoever frames the issue wins the case. Experience has proven this right over and again. Could we create an impression of our home that asserts who we believe we are instead of defending against who others might imagine us to be? Is a good offense the best defense?

It was late on a Thursday night. I had just gotten home after giving a speech in Covington, Ind. I pulled into the garage about 11, tired and thirsty. The garage door humor closed behind me and I exited the car, entering the house through the kitchen door. Mary Ellen was asleep upstairs.

I went into the bedroom. I undressed, but before putting on my sleeping shorts, I decided to run downstairs, let the dog out the back door for a few minutes and grab a small bottle of fruit juice from the garage fridge.

I retrieved the drink and turned the knob to re-enter the house. The knob refused to budge.

“That can’t be,” I said to myself. “That door is always left unlocked. No way.” And no clothes, either.

I panicked, banging on the door with both fists, bellowing Mary Ellen’s name. There was no response.

Our bedroom door was closed; the ceiling fan was whirring. On a scale from one to 10, in order to be heard I would need to make a disturbance that was a four. On the Richter scale.

My cell phone was in the car! If I called the home phone, that would surely get Mary Ellen’s attention. It rang and rang but there was no answer. It went to voicemail. Out of habit, I left a message: “Hello, Mary Ellen. If you get this, I’m in the garage with no clothes on.

When you have a moment, could you come downstairs and let me in?”

The back door of the house was unlocked because I had let the dog out. All I had to do was sneak around and go through the entrance on the deck.

At that moment, I began to fully appreciate what my wife goes through when we plan an evening out. I needed to give some serious consideration to my wardrobe. But what was appropriate for this occasion? I had two choices: A lovely 40-gallon black garbage bag or the 34-gallon clear plastic bags. I look terrible in black, but the other option seemed, well, redundant.

Instead, I just opened the garage door and made my way along the side of the house; then as I neared the backyard, I bolted toward the deck, up the steps and into the living room.

The next morning I decided not to tell Mary Ellen what happened.But I had forgotten about that voicemail. She called me from work later.

“Dick, I just listened to the oddest message.

Apparently, last night, about the time you were supposed to get home, there was a naked man in our garage. Now, who in heaven’s name could that have possibly been?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea, Mary Ellen.”

Car-pool rules are essential Commentary by Danielle WIlson I can’t believe at this point in my parenting career that I have to write a whole column on this, but frankly I’m surprised I’ve never humor covered it before. I’m speaking, obviously, of car pool line etiquette.

For you amateur pick-up drivers out there, please take note. I beg of you! This mom’s already-fragile sanity won’t withstand many more parking-lot shenanigans.

Recognize that there is a car pool line. Every time, for every event. If you don’t see it immediately upon arrival, bully for you! This means that you are the first, and as such, will be despised by pretty much everyone else. But as long as you don’t set up shop 50 yards behind the designated “pick-up” zone and instead pull to three car lengths ahead, you’ll at least earn a smidgeon of respect. Don’t forget to turn off the engine! Your gas-guzzling SUV poisons my kid’s air when you sit idling for 15 minutes.

For the normal parent who arrives within a reasonable window of the targeted time, simply go to the end of the line and be careful not to block parked cars, entrances and exits, or oncoming traffic. [I’ve actually seen this happen.

What an idiot.] Occasionally you’ll be required to execute a U-turn to join in; please do so with competence. If it takes you 23 moves, you waive your spot and any able driver may legitimately take your position. It’s a tough break, my friend,

but efficiency is of utmost importance in “The Line.”

Pay attention! These things can move like lightening once kids begin emerging. You need to be ready to pull forward at a moment’s notice.

If you’re texting your best gal pal about brunch tomorrow and miss your cue, I will honk at you.

Have your doors unlocked and preferably open so as to expedite loading. Instruct your passengers to dive into the van as soon as you slow down. Speed is important at this juncture; there’s no time for storing backpacks in the trunk or gingerly setting violins down in the back seat. Rock and roll, people! I have places to be and your slow-moving child is not helping.

Do not start a conversation with the teacher or other parents out your window! I sat behind someone the other day for two minutes while she yucked it up with the adult helper (and her offspring struggled to get the trunk open [see #4]). My well-trained daughter was standing by at the ready, but I couldn’t get to her because Social Butterfly was enjoying a chat.

Car pool lines are a necessary evil, but they don’t have to be a nightmare if you just follow the rules! Peace out.

Editor, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 37 years ago and have seen incredible advances in technology and treatment since then. One of the most important improvements has been to glucose monitors- when I was first diagnosed I had to go to the hospital for glucose test, then home glucose testing kits came along, and now an incredible device called a continuous glucose monitor is available. It constantly monitors my blood sugar and sets off an alarm when my glucose is not in optimal range. Thanks to the CGM, I can maintain my active lifestyle without fearing dangerous and sneaky low blood glucose episodes.

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover CGM technology. I fear that when I go on Medicare, I will no longer have access to this life-saving technology. This would profoundly affect my ability to control my diabetes and prevent costly complications like blindness, heart problems and kidney disease. However, legislation in the Senate would change this.

I want to express my gratitude to Senator Donnelly for standing up for the diabetes community and encouraging Medicare to give seniors the tools they need to better control their diabetes.

Thoughts on security Commentary by Carl Brizzi Solving problems regarding White House security breaches and the issues plaguing the Secret Service are valid priorities. As opinion expected, however, officials have blamed the failures on “insufficient funding” and inadequate physical security.

We will soon hear hue and cry from government leaders for additional funding and pledges of stricter safeguards that will continue to erode American civil liberties in the name of “security”.

Tax increases, bloated runaway government budgets and staggering national debt did not temper the former Secret Service director’s comments about her budget as she lamented funding reductions while “accepting responsibility”.

A point omitted at the congressional hearing was the fact that, according to Bloomberg, getting hired as a Secret Service agent is tougher than getting into Harvard - the acceptance rate is less than 1 percent. Harvard College admits 5.9 percent of applicants. So the agents themselves are evidently the cream of the crop and funding concerns have nothing to do with the reported blunders.

These security issues must be addressed.

But we should be concerned that representatives from both parties are reciting rhetoric implying that these blunders will trigger even more spending and even more liberty effacing

measures.

Some are advocating “shoot first” policy zones as if the White House was located on an open prairie. A visit to D.C. demonstrates that our Capitol is disappearing behind castle-like walls. Concrete barriers and armed guards litter every street corner. The White House is completely cordoned off. Let’s try locking the front door and arming the alarm before more money and effort is spent excluding the all-ready-excluded public. Take a look next visit; armed guards outnumber tourists most days.

Our Capitol is supposed to represent the center of freedom for the world. It is becoming, however, oppressive and fear bound. Fear is the most powerful tool in the terrorists’ arsenal, and fear is gradually eroding our freedom. The current administration deals with legitimate threats by imposing greater restrictions on law-abiding citizens. The only real control we have is to guard against our own government using fear to expand federal power. Legitimate governments exist to serve their citizens — and we — the citizens have to draw a line between “security” and our increasing loss of freedom.

No demand, no need, no more taxes Commentary by John Accetturo

I just don’t understand why the mayors of Carmel, Westfield, and Noblesville are such big advocates of spending billions opinion on a mass transit system for Hamilton County. The bus service currently being provided from Fishers and Carmel to Indianapolis has not attracted many riders and recently was subsidized by Fishers and Carmel taxpayers so it can survive until year end. If a city of more like 80,000 people like Carmel can only generate less than 60 riders for bus service to Indianapolis, how can Hamilton County support a mass transit system that will cost billions?

These mayors have failed to consider facts about the workforce and commute time to determine if a need exists for a mass transit system.

First of all, well more than 50 percent of all workers today are women. According to most studies these same women are the major caretakers for children. So how are they going to get back to Hamilton County quickly and back to work to support doctor appointments, sports participation, and after-school activities using mass transit? Secondly, the commute to downtown Indianapolis is less than 40 minutes even in rush hour. So where are these prime caretakers going to get the extra time needed to drive to a transit station and for the mass transit ride time into Indianapolis? They have no extra time. Thirdly, with

flex hours at almost all working locations, how can you accommodate the need to go in both directions at all times? Finally, there is a major trend for working at home which will continue to reduce the need to commute in any fashion.

These same mayors say businesses need a way for their employees to get to work locations in Hamilton County. However they fail to support the concept of businesses paying for some of the cost of a mass transit system. If businesses need a mass transportation system to transport their workers to Hamilton County, they should pay for it.

The cost to operate mass transit system once the equipment is purchased is another issue.

IndyGo only produces about 18 percent of the revenue needed from riders, while taxes ($33 million in 2013) made up 50 percent of their annual revenue. We have already seen several venues built in Hamilton County which require millions in taxpayer subsidies each year to operate. We don’t need another one.

In conclusion, I just don’t understand why the mayors and other elected officials like County Commissioner (Christine) Altman are denying the reality of the situation. It just makes no sense.

The art of a democratic orchestra

Our most common image of a symphony orchestra usually focuses on the conductor: a commanding figure, wielding a white baton, standing at the center of everyone’s attention on a podium. He or she not only music keeps all the musicians playing together, presumably, but also shapes the audience’s listening experience by drawing from the ensemble an attractive realization of the composer’s musical ideas.

Swimming against the tide of this durable image for more than four decades is the conductor-less Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which makes its Palladium debut Oct. 18. A pianist, not a conductor, will be in the spotlight: Jonathan Biss, a Bloomington native now enjoying an international career and a veteran Orphenus collaborator.

Otherwise, the audience will be taking in what Orpheus has collectively come up with on its own in works by Beethoven, Poulenc, Rossini and Zwilich. Like Biss, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich has some Hoosier connections, though not as deeply rooted: She wrote the first new piece ever played by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in its home, the renovated Circle Theatre, in 1984. And last month she sat on the jury of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, at which 16 semifinalists played her specially commissioned Fantasy for Solo Violin.

For most of its existence so far, the Orpheus followed its original model of full dialogue on everything it did artistically. It became unwieldy, but the 30-odd-member ensemble was not about to discard its core principle: that a large ensemble can forge its own destiny in performance without a conductor. It developed a more orderly procedure for channeling member input.

Then, according to executive director Krishna Thiagarajan, the Great Recession of the last decade threw Orpheus for a loop, with its effects really sinking in about 2011, casting doubt on the model it had pioneered. He took the job in 2013.

“In previous soul-searching, it was the decision not to tour as much,” he

explained. “I felt strongly that we as an organization have to have our home in New York but also need to have presence throughout the U.S. and abroad,” where Tokyo, Berlin and Vienna have been Orpheus’ strongest centers of support after New York.

The solution was to find ways to tour more and be creative about holding down travel expenses: getting back home from a tour as quickly as possible, for example. “It’s not a management-versus-musician position,” Thiagarajan continued. The goal is “maximizing the time onstage” while reducing offstage costs.

The Orpheus method has been applied on request to other organizations, some of them non-musical. An accounting firm in Japan and an agricultural college in Alberta, Canada, are just two recent examples among many who’ve picked Orpheus’ brain about the benefits of democratic leadership.

But is every Orpheus member ready to be a leader, even those who may be pleased to work collectively without a conductor? And do some egos feed too eagerly on not having a boss? “This has been an extraordinary eyeopener for me,” Thiagarajan replied. “I would have expected that if there’s a lot of freedom, you need a very firm hand at the top. But when you lay the choices out in the right way, they have often taken the right decision. If you give people the opportunity to do the right thing, they will take it.

“You have to have many quiet conversations,” Thiagarajan said with deliberate emphasis. “But it makes for some good sleeping at night.”

The main reason for creating the production is to raise money for local charities. However, Christie said she hopes the cast and crew realize it is more than just being applauded for a great performance and the creation of a beautiful set.

“Just like somebody serving our church, working with our children or serving through a different capacity, no matter what you are doing it is a service for God,” Christie said. “This is coming together to serve our Lord. So I hope that people walk away feeling well and the feeling of bonding with each other and that their relationship with God has deepened.”

“Les Miserables” is known for its large cast and the strong vocal elements it uses to tell the story about Jean Valjean’s life. theater Grace Church, 5504 E. 146th St., Noblesville, and its satellite campus, Grace Church-Fishers, have decided to take on the challenge and produce “Les Miserables” in the hopes of raising money for two local nonprofit organizations: Hands of Hope and Safe Families.

Both organizations help children find a safe place whether it be for a safe place during a crisis or adoption. Grace Church has put on productions in the past such as “The Sound of Music” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” but never anything as large as “Les Miserables.”

“The story itself was appealing to us, it’s a story we want people to hear and we also value the arts and artists,” said director Amy Christie.

“It’s exciting to us that we can create a show with so many people with multiple generations.

There is such a mix of age in our show and there is something really cool when all of these people of different ages come together.”

Open auditions were held so members of the community could also be involved as well as the members of Grace Church. A total of 150 people auditioned and 116 were cast. Every person involved in the production is a volunteer.

Feinstein’s first Christmas album

Sweet Honey arrives Oct. 19

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com Grammy-nominated, African American, allfemale a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock is set to arrive in Carmel music on their “40th Anniversary: Forty & Fierce” tour Oct. 19 at the Center for the Performing Arts.

The group, famous for their mix of a cappella, world, and jazz stylings will be playing a host of their classic hits, both old and new.

Individual members will also perform solo numbers, sharing their intimate stories and personal experiences encompassing the four decades the group has played.

Sweet Honey in the Rock first began after founding member Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon was arrested for her actions as a civil rights political activist. The political power of music was embedded in her mind from then on. The group would form in its first incarnation in 1973.

Sweet Honey in the Rock member Shirley Childress Saxton also provides American Sign Language for deaf attendees. The intent is to both visually and aurally represent the depth of their music, so disadvantaged listeners may be able experience the world of music in their own way, Saxton wrote in a 1999 songbook publishing.

Sweet Honey in the Rock has also performed all over the globe, including locations such as Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The group recently finished a tour throughout Belize as part of the Arts Envoy Program and initiative by the U.S. State Department, hosted by the Belize U.S. Embassy.

Attendees will also be able to hear “She-Rocks 5 Radio,” a unique presentation featuring the group’s most revered songs.

The program will be hosted by DJ Merk and produced by Louise Robinson and Jordan Maillard Ware.

There was excitement in the air at the AMC Theaters on Oct. 4 when Hollywood came to Indiana. The 23rd annual Heartland movies Film Festival started off with a bang at a special party and advanced screening of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Judge.” Director David Dobkin told the sold-out crowd that none of the film’s actors could attend the event but he brought along a producer.

A- List actor Robert Downey Jr. known for “Iron Man” and “Sherlock Holmes” waltzed in the theater and shocked the paying audience. Heartland put a twist on the entire evening as both Dobkin and Downey attended the sold-out screening, participated in a media press line and enlighten the audience with a wonderful Q & A that followed after the film.

“A powerful and entertaining film set in Indiana, ‘The Judge’ was a perfect fit to launch the 2014 Heartland Film Festival,” said President Stuart Lowry, “The surprise appearance from an actor of Robert Downey Jr.’s caliber shows that we have something very special here in Indianapolis. to defend his estranged father after the death of his mother. His father, the town’s judge is suspected of murder. Hank struggles with the lost years, validation and approval he always longed for from his strict father. The film cleverly tries to bring together a broken family as Hank desperately searches for answers and the truth to save his own father’s destiny with the law. The acting, cinematography and music score flowed exceptionally well together and made the film a truly moving picture.

Amy’s top picks for Heartland Commentary by Amy Pauszek Here are more of my picks for the Heartland Film Festival. The festival runs Oct. 16 through 25 at theaters around Indianapolis. movies “I’M WITH PHIL” A fun and moving feature length documentary concerning a series of events that transpire in a small Alabama town called Phil Campbell. Phil Campbell of Brooklyn, sets out on a journey to find the town after he learns of the existence through an episode of “Hee Haw.” Phil turns to the internet and organizes a convention in the town for all the other people in the world that share the name of Phil Campbell. Directed

by Andrew Reed and with a cast of real life Phil Campbells, this documentary film will open your eyes and warm your heart.

“THE HEALING WALL” Written and directed by Indiana native /Ball State graduate Christopher Kosinski, this is a must-see power driven documentary feature film about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

Their story. Her design. A nation’s memorial. The story is about the development of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. and its unforeseen ability to heal a nation from one of the most controversial conflicts of history.

This film is part of the Special Indiana Spotlight Presentation and will be shown with two other local films “Three Months” and “We’ll Be Alright.”

Be sure to add “The Healing Wall” to your list of must-see films, it is an eye opener and Kosinski does it justice.

“AUDREY MAKES A MIXTAPE” I screened and fell in love with “Audrey Makes a Mixtape” a short film by the hip writer/director James Mackenzie. Mackenzie knows how to bring life to the typical teen issue of how to snag the most popular boy in high school. Set in 1988, Audrey has the perfect plot ... a blank cassette tape. Sound corny or a bit off? Not at all when this delightful story unfolds as she hopes to save her crush from losing his virginity to the queen bee.

“DRUNKTOWN’S FINEST” Life on an Indian reservation can often feel like a dead end for many of the residents. This film captures and represents a variety of lifestyles that are often misunderstood in such a closeknit community. Three young Native Americans, an adopted Christian girl, a rebellious father-tobe, and a promiscuous transexual, are forced to deal with their identities and must confront these perceptions. They play out against the backdrop of the traditional values of the reservation which both constrains and supports them.

Nizhoniis is a traditional college student trying to find her place in the world. I loved this film because it was real — it makes one try to understand a culture that is rich with tradition and pride. A film that will make the audience think about life and how we all strive to be something or someone. This film confronts viewers with the reality of life on the reservation, the staleness that make people want to leave and the power unity that keeps so many there.

“GABOR” “Gabor” is the very powerful documentary story of a friendship between a young filmmaker and a blind cinematographer, Sebas and Gabor. Sebas has been commissioned to make a documentary on the work of Ulls Del Mon, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to the prevention of blindness that wants to promote the work it is carrying out in El Alto, Bolivia. Sebas recalls his cameraman told him a story about Gabor, a cinematographer who had gone blind.

Gabor, a Hungarian filmmaker residing in Spain, has been making a living from his film camera rental company ever since he went blind on a shoot eight years ago.

Apple Butter Pork Loin Ingredients: 2 (2 pound) boneless pork loin roast.

Seasoning salt to taste.

2 cups apple juice. 1/2 cup apple butter. 1/4 cup brown sugar. 2 tablespoons water. 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Season the pork loins with seasoning salt, and place them in a 9x13 inch baking dish or small roasting pan.

Pour apple juice over the pork, and cover the dish with a lid or aluminum foil. Bake for one hour in the preheated oven. While

Food wise, it can mean restaurants a cup of the Brick Street blonde chili slurped down before a round of the braised pork shanks followed by an original recipe of the chocolate volcano.

Restaurant wise, it could mean sitting on a patio surrounded by flowers, trees, and the quaint vibe of Zionsville’s Main Street. It could also mean waking up to a hot plate of the owner’s personal favorite, pecan French toast glazed with Indiana maple syrup, in the comfort of your own room.

Patrick’s and Brick Street Inn are co-tenants at 175 S. Main St. and are quite the pair.

Patrick Mullen and Beth Dickerson started the restaurant in the Boone Village Shopping Center.

In 2011, they moved to its current location on Main Street. The transition happened in 11 days.

“We danced, we held hands, then we got married,” Mullen said. “There was no period of adjustment.”

In 2012, the venue caught fire and had to close for a five-month period.

Two years later, Mullen said Patrick’s has higher sales each year, but that is not his main focus.

better than before they encountered you,” Mullen said. “And hopefully, they buy some things so you can pay the rent.”

The downtown restaurant is smaller than the previous location with 48 seats inside and 24 outside. They originally planned for a more family style restaurant but now entertain fewer guests at a time with later night sales.

Chef Douglas Scott Rawlings II has been at Patrick’s for more than a year now.

“It’s amazing the amount we produce out of a smaller space,” Rawlings said. “The kitchen is a little larger than a food truck.”

Rawlings provides the twists to the comfort food which Patrick’s boasts on its website. He said some dishes he’ll cook Caribbean style and some French style. His suggestions include the different meat selections.

“The pork shanks are absolutely huge and the rib eye is absolutely killer,” Rawlings said.

Rawlings and Dickerson collaborate on many recipes. Dickerson’s 2007 originals include a spinach and artichoke torta which Mullen says tastes like a “savory cheesecake” and the chocolate volcano with a Belgian Callebaut.

This is one of my family’s favorite recipes, “Arroz Chaufa” (Chinese Rice), is a Peruvian fried rice dish.

This dish is highly influenced by Chinese cuisine due to the influx of Chinese immigrants to Peru. There are reported to be more than 9,000 “Chifas” (Chinese restaurants) in Lima, Peru alone.

This Arroz Chaufa is a great recipe to cook at home; forget the takeout orders which you have to drive to pick them up and bring home. In a snap you can have this “DELICIOSO” (tasty) dish, which is much healthier, cost less money and is a wonderful way to use leftover rice. This is what I call the perfect dish.

Note: Arroz Chaufa is a very flexible dish; you can use brown or white rice. You can use whatever vegetable you have (edamame, corn, bean sprouts), you can add tofu to make it vegeterian or you can cut chicken in cubes, hot dogs in slices or shrimp.

Do not use sesame oil as a cooking oil because it burns easily.

ARROZ CHAUFA (Chinese Rice) Prep : 5 minutes - Cooking time: 10 minutes / Serve: 4 Ingredients: 2 cups of rice, 2 large eggs, beaten, 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil, 1 teaspoon soy sauce (use low sodium), 2 1/2 tablespoons oil, 8 to 10 finely sliced scallions (use white and green part),

3 to 4 cups of vegetables, chopped in small size red bell pepper, carrots, celery, zucchini, peas, 2 teaspoons of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped, 1 teaspoon garlic cloves, sliced, 2 tablespoons light soy sauce (add more if you like) Directions: Use leftover cooked rice. Cook the rice you normally do with oil, salt, garlic, and water.

In a small bowl lightly beat the eggs, together with soy sauce and sesame oil. In a small pan heat oil swirling to coat surface; add egg mixture; swirl egg; when egg puffs, flip and cook other side briefly; remove from pan and chop into small pieces; set aside.

Place your biggest pan or wok over high heat and drizzle in oil to cover the bottom. Add the garlic, ginger and scallions stir-fry until onion starts to soften. Add all chopped vegetables and cook until they are sizzling for 2 to 3 minutes. Add (chicken, tofu or hot dog if desired) and stir-fry for 2 minutes.

Throw in the rice and carefully mix well; stir-fry for 3 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of light soy sauce and chopped egg to rice mixture and fold in; stir-fry for 1 minute more. Serve immediately. Set out additional soy sauce on the table, if desired. Accompany with Jasmine tea.

Public voting will start Oct. 20 and last until Oct. 31, and will be a penny per vote for the favorite pumpkins. Monies collected in each can will go directly to the organization. The pumpkin that collects the most votes will receive a $100 donation by Akard True Value Hardware.

To also help raise more money, Akard said the pumpkins will be on display for voting during the Boone Village Halloween Party on Oct. 29. Hot dogs will be served at the event for a donation to their favorite pumpkin.

The sixth annual Ghosts & Goblins 5K/2K & Wellness Fair will be Oct. 25 at Carmel High School, 520 East Main St..

“The whole theme is about fun. We want it to be a family affair,” said CEF co-executive director Barbara Danquist.

Participants can walk or run at either distance on a course that takes you through the Arts & Design District in downtown Carmel and along the Meadowlark and Monon Trails.

The 5K will start at 9 a.m. and the 2K will start at 9:15 a.m. The Wellness Fair will be open to the public from 7:30 to 10 a.m..

Your family’s little ghosts and goblins will have the chance to make a difference on Nov. 3 with Martine Dentistry at Stonegate in Zionsville and Operation Gratitude’s Candy Buy giving Back program.

Kids can bring in their sugarcoated earnings from the spooky October holiday to the office on East Stonegate Drive between 4 and 6 p.m. A dollar will be paid back for every pound delivered, with a cap at $10 for the truly dedicated trick-or-treaters. Now in its sixth year of participation, Martine Dentistry has raised an impressive 1,100 pounds of Halloween joy over the span of half a decade.

“All the candy collected is shipped to Operation Gratitude in California, which then dispenses it to servicemen and women everywhere around the world,” office manager Marti Taylor said. “Though they may eat it themselves, they use it primarily as goodwill for the children in the areas that they’re stationed in.”

Operation Gratitude, which the office became involved with when Dr. Martine discovered it in a dental magazine, collects and distributes care packages to U.S. service members abroad. Their Halloween-themed Candy Buy Back program in partnership with dentist offices across the nation collects the titular sweets as well as dental hygiene products and letters for the service members.

Resmer Orthodontics, 16000 Prosperity Dr., Suite 500, Noblesville, will host a Halloween candy buy back from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 3.

Turn in your unopened Halloween Candy and the dentist office will pay $2 per pound. The unopened candy will be sent to the U.S. troops worldwide. You do not have to be a patient to participate. For more information, call 774-8480.

On the day of the Buy Back, Taylor, Martine, and other staff members work to weigh the candy and distribute the earnings, not only saving the kids a couple of potential cavities from the holiday, but also making someone’s day around the globe.

“It’s really fun to have the kids come in and see the numbers because they have no idea until you put the candy on the scale,” Taylor said.

“A lot of them do reach the $10 maximum. We have some kids who won’t even take the money because they just want to donate their candy for a good cause.”

Ghosts, Goblins, Ghouls and of course…candy!

It’s Halloween! During this spooky season where are our little ones are dressing up fitness as their favorite princesses or superheroes, it’s hard to resist the temptation of all the delicious (yet calorie-filled) treats! If you do decide to indulge in more of the “treating” rather than the “tricking.”

Baby Boot Camp has come up with some ways that you can work off calories while still having fun with your little one by using a pumpkin to help stay fit!

Pumpkin Wall Sit: Standing with your back against a wall, place your feet two feet in front of you, hip-distance apart. Bending your knees, slide your back down the wall until your knees are at 90-degree angles. Holding the pumpkin with both hands, raise until the pumpkin is at chest level. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds.

Squat with Pumpkin Press: Holding a pumpkin in your hands at chest level, push your hips back and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor with your eyes up, your chest and knees out. Stand up and press the pumpkin overhead.

Increase the intensity by jumping up squat position while pressing the pumpkin overhead then land softly and repeating. Perform for 30 seconds.

3. Jack-O-Climbers: Place a pumpkin on the floor. Place your hands on the pumpkin and assume a push-up position with your abs pulled in

and tighten your glutes, and keeping a straight line from the head through the heels. Bring one knee to your chest while keeping your hips and shoulders square, then switch sides and repeat with each leg. Perform for 30 seconds.

Swamp Juice a la Slime Recipe

Ingredients: 1/2 cup light corn syrup. Green paste food coloring.

5 cups unsweetened pineapple juice. 2 cups white grape juice.

2 drops yellow food coloring, optional. 1 cup club soda, chilled.

Fresh pineapple slices, optional.

Ingredients: 1 box (15 oz.) refrigerated pie crusts. 6 ounces sliced Black Forest or Virginia ham. 8 ounces sliced extra-sharp Cheddar, Swiss or Gruyère cheese. 1 large egg, lightly beaten.

Directions: Heat oven to 425ºF. Line a rimmed baking sheet with nonstick foil. On work surface, unroll pie crust and cut each of the two crusts into 12 pumpkin shapes with a 3-in. pumpkin cookie cutter. Using

Ingredients: Marshmallow Skulls.

For the Madeleines: 2 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder, sifted. 2 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons boiling water. 1 large egg, room temperature. 1 large egg yolk, room temperature. 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons cake flour (not selfrising), sifted. 7 tablespoons sugar.

1/4 teaspoon baking powder. 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt. 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, plus more for pans. For the Glaze: 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate (preferably 61 percent), finely chopped. 1 cup heavy cream. 1 tablespoon light corn syrup.

Directions: Make the madeleines: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Generously butter mini-madeleine pans. Whisk cocoa powder and water in a medium bowl until smooth. Let cool slightly, then whisk in egg, yolk, and vanilla

until incorporated. Beat flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt with a mixer on low speed until combined. Raise speed to medium, and add butter and 1/2 the cocoa mixture. Beat for two minutes, then scrape sides of bowl. Beat in remaining cocoa mixture on medium speed until completely combined, scraping sides of bowl as needed. Transfer batter to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/4-inch round tip, and pipe into

buttered pans, filling each 3/4 full. (Refrigerate batter between batches.) Bake, rotating halfway, until testers inserted in centers come out clean and madeleines spring back when pressed, eight to 10 minutes. Unmold onto wire racks, and let cool. Make the glaze: Place chocolate in a food processor. Bring cream and corn syrup to a simmer in a small saucepan, whisking until combined. Pour over chocolate, and process until smooth. Set racks with madeleines over parchmentlined baking sheets. Spoon some of the glaze over each madeleine to coat. Transfer to clean parchment-lined baking sheets.

Refrigerate until glaze is firm, 15 to 20 minutes. Push sticky side of marshmallow skulls into madeleines, and serve immediately.

Owner Stephanie Southern promises a complete workout combining cardio and strength training using one of the 52 “heavy bags” located in the 5,600-square-foot facility.

“It’s great for cross training for athletes,” Southern said. “It’s not just cardio. Since you have the impact of (hitting or kicking) that bag that weighs 100 pounds, it’s also going to tone and build muscle. You’re just not going to get hit; you’re going to get fit.”

Southern is a former professional dancer with training certification from the American Council on Exercise. She has been a trainer/instructor for nearly 10 years and helped open and manage a pair of similar area clubs, which inspired her to open IronFit after clients insisted on a more comprehensive training program.

Besides Southern, the IronFit training staff includes a former mixed martial arts fighter/ coach, a firefighter/professional trainer, a kickboxing coach/trainer and more. One-hour classes are offered in boxing and kickboxing, as well as a 75-minute boxing boot camp class that combines a boxing heavy bag routine with weight training using free weights, weight machines and even tractor tires. A boxing ring is also available for workouts punching into a trainer’s focus mitts, “so no one is getting punched,” Southern said.

If you find yourself in this situation and wondering whether or not you should file for your Social Security benefits while you’re still working, I will share an idea that you might consider. Dave

and Julia both enjoy their jobs and want to work into their late 60s, early 70s. Dave is currently 66 and at full retirement age based on Social Security rules. His Social Security benefit at full retirement age is $2,600 per month based on his earnings history. Julia will reach full retirement age of 66 in April 2016, at which time her benefit will be $1,600 per month.

Dave is delaying his benefits because he wants to take advantage of the annual 8 percent simple interest growth to his benefits until he reaches the age of 70. Julia on the other hand wants to continue working past full retirement age, but instead of getting delayed retirement credits on her benefits, she thinks it will be best to start her $1,600 when she reaches her full retirement age 18 months from now.

Fast forward to April 2016 when Julia has turned 66 and is now considered to be full retirement age. Most people in Julia’s position will elect their own benefits, which in this example is $1,600 per month. Is there a different strategy available to Julia outside of just taking her own benefit at 66?

Yes, Julia can take advantage of spousal benefits at age 66, where she is eligible for up to half of Dave’s benefit which is $1,300 per month. Why in the world would Julia consider taking $1,300 in spousal benefits vs. her full amount of $1,600 per month? Well, in this example, Julia’s own benefit

of $1,600 per month will grow 8 percent simple interest every year until the age of 70 if she elects to take the spousal benefit. One important caveat is that Dave needs to file for his benefits first before she elects spousal benefits. Since he still wants his own benefit to grow until 70, he decides to file and immediately suspend his benefits at 68, which in turn gives Julia the opportunity to file for spousal benefits.

Since Julia decides to take the $1,300 spousal benefit, her own benefit will grow from $1,600 to $2,112 at age 70. Furthermore, since Dave filed and suspended his benefits at 68, his $2,600 benefit will grow to $3,432 at age 70.

In this example, Julia and Dave gave up $300 per month by electing spousal benefits at Juila’s full retirement age vs. electing her own benefit, but received a very large bump in benefits at 70 by switching to her benefit that has grown under the delayed retirement benefits provision.

Additionally, if Dave dies before Julia, she will have the ability to switch from her own benefit to Dave’s benefit of $3,432 under the surviving spouses provision.

The Mall of London Commentary by Don Knebel Early in the 20th century, residents of London developed a case of street envy. Their 25,000 streets did not include a single one Travel like Avenue des Champs-Élysées or Pennsylvania Avenue that was suitable for ceremonial parades. Their remedy for this deficiency eventually became associated with shopping.

Before Londoners longed for a parade street, they had played a lawn game called “pall mall” or simply “mall” on a grassy alley running east from Buckingham Palace. When the game lost popularity in the 18th century, the alley became a tree-lined walkway called “the Mall,” pronounced like the first syllable in “mallet.” The Mall proved to be the ideal location for a parade route. So, in 1911, architect Sir Aston Webb remodeled the east façade of Buckingham Palace to be more attractive and erected a statue memorializing Queen Victoria on the palace grounds to anchor a broad new street named “the Mall.”

A proper parade street requires an anchor on both ends. After all, the Champs-Élysées connects the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe and Pennsylvania Avenue connects the Capitol and the White House. To provide the Mall an east-

ern anchor, Webb designed the Admiralty Arch straddling the Mall, with three wide archways allowing access to Trafalgar Square just beyond.

Befitting a monument honoring seafarers, the Admiralty Arch, completed in 1912, was located exactly .5 nautical miles (.58 statute miles) from the Queen Victoria Memorial.

During ceremonial occasions, rows of Union Jacks flank the Mall from Buckingham Palace to the Admiralty Arch. In the 1950s, iron oxide particles were added to the Mall’s pavement to suggest a red carpet rolled out from Buckingham Palace. The Mall is closed to traffic on Sundays, holidays and ceremonial occasions. As time passed, “mall” came first to mean an area free of automobiles and then, pronounced like the first syllable in “wallet,” a North American shopping center.

In 2011, the English government sold the Admiralty Arch to developers, who are converting it into a five-star hotel. For the next coronation or royal wedding, a west-facing room in the 100room hotel should be the hottest ticket in town.

Five simple behavior modifiers to help itchy dogs Commentary by John Mikesell Five things to do when your dog chews, licks, or scratches: 1. Take your dog to the veterinarian for a checkup. Nothing you do to address the dog’s behavior will be of much use if your dog itches as a result of environmental allergies or some other medical condition. If you treat the medical condition, the licking and chewing may stop. If not, it’s become a behavioral issue.

2. Identify your dog’s stressors. The behavioral cause of self-licking and chewing is stress. The stress from a medical condition may persist even after treatment, and learned licking/chewing behavior may persist even after medical stress is gone. Refer to the last column on stress, for more ideas.

Many other stressors can also cause licking and chewing, especially in dogs who

are genetically predisposed to compulsive oral behaviors. Large breeds such as the Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and Irish Setter are most commonly affected.

3. Remove stressors. There are several strategies you can use to remove stressors from your dog’s list: • Get rid of it. Throw away the shock collar – in fact, avoid using aversive actions as much as possible.

• Treat medical conditions: alleviate chronic pain medications, provide dental care, and address anything else that might be physi-

cally troubling your dog.

• Live with it. We all live with some stress.

Identify the most minimal stressors and just let them be.

4. Increase your dog’s exercise. Aerobic exercise not only burns energy your dog would use to fret (and lick), but also causes the release of feel good endorphins that help alleviate stress. Mental exercise – shaping, interactive toys – can also help.

5. Utilize stress-reduction products. There are many good products on the market that purport to alleviate stress.

• “Through a Dog’s Ear.” Calming classical music selected and clinically tested to reduce a dog’s heart rate, available on CD or mp3.

• Thundershirt or Anxiety Wrap that holds the dog tightly, similar to swaddling. You can also use an old T-shirt as long as it has a tight fit.

Each room had a gimmicky theme. We were ready for something more contemporary with a rustic edge.”

CABINET MODIFICATIONS: The original perimeter cabinets were still in great shape and functioned well in their existing locations; however, they needed cosmetic upgrades to modernize the space. The perimeter cabinets were painted eggshell with a Pewter Glaze. New pull handles in a brushed satin nickel finish were installed and a new farmhouse style sink installed in the modified base cabinet. The microwave was replaced with a higher-end vent hood.

EXPANDED ISLAND & LIGHTING: The original island was replaced with a larger island in a contrasting espresso color. The new island offers more space for seating, storage and also houses the microwave. Three pendant lights in an oiled bronze finish were installed above the island making it the main focal point.

FAMILY ROOM FIREPLACE WALL: “Our original fireplace had a very cold look to it with the large white tiles.

It didn’t give off a very warm and cozy feeling.”

To warm up the space, the tile was removed and replaced with a multi-color stacked stone. The fireplace wall was then painted deep green creating a breathtaking feature wall in the family room.
