KEYSTONE: WHAT IT MEANS

Last thursday, Carmel was given keystone avenue by the state. How will it affect you? THE PROJECT

It will replace traditional intersections from 106th Street to 136th Street along Keystone Avenue with elevated roundabouts and will lower Keystone to allow unimpeded traffic north and south.

THE COST

Preliminary estimates call for spending $70 to $75 million for roundabouts at six intersections, according to Mayor Jim Brainard. Because 96th Street is a boundary between Carmel and Indianapolis, it has to be handled under federal rules, Brainard said. The city will seek federal funding for it.

on the cross streets near Keystone might have to choose another east-west route home.

because little additional rights-ofway will be needed. This is because this plan does not widen Keystone with new lanes, which is what the state plan intended. Access to the

businesses along Keystone will be limited as certain intersections are rebuilt and Keystone lowered.

SOURCE OF FUNDING

The state will provide Carmel with $90 million toward the redesign and reconstruction of Keystone and will relinquish control over the road, also known as State Road 431, from 96th Street to U.S. 31. Bids have not been sought yet, the mayor said, so cost estimates are preliminary.

OUR TAKES It is our position that the recent announcement by Gov. Mitch Daniels and Mayor Jim Brainard that our fine city will be taking control of Keystone Avenue from 96th Street north is good for both all of us and the rest of the citizens of Indiana. But, it must be managed in a thoughtful and intentional way. At a press conference last week, both men talked about their cooperative efforts to improve the major thoroughfare and to benefit the folks who live, work and travel in Carmel. The designs presented by the mayor and discussed many times in this paper include inventive plans designed to reduce strain on the

artery, limit impact on neighboring properties and reconnect the east and west. How could it be any better? That said, the city must work quickly, efficiently and with considerable attention to regular communication as the lengthy and inconvenient improvements are under way. We have an opportunity to prove the positive impact of innovative design and construction techniques. The state has blessed the initiative, and if Keystone proves a success it could positively affect the planned and upcoming reworking of the other crucial (and divisive) mainstay of Carmel, U.S. 31.

CHOICE FOR PAC ROCK-SOLID It is our position that limestone is the right choice for the skin of the muchdebated Performing Arts Center. With recent funding provided by private donors, this latest and perhaps most significant community asset will be clad in one of the longest-lasting and sentimental building materials used in modern times. This humble stone has wrapped and defended countless buildings including much of the monumental architecture in Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis. Imagine the heart of Monument Circle made out of papier mâché. Imagine the Pyramids of Egypt made of marzipan. More seriously, imagine the Pentagon on

9/11 made not of solid panels of Indiana limestone, but instead of a thin smear of stucco. Brick, stone, bronze and steel. They pronounce images of permanence, authenticity and security. When our forefathers chose a barren landscape in the center of our then newly formed state to build a capital, they built it with stone. They chose to invest in their future. There is enough in our lives that is fabricated, temporary and awaiting upgrade. Great communities are built on the notion that they are going to last through the ages. We believe Carmel, and its Performing Arts Center, is such a place.

Random thoughts while wondering why the hell we even have random thoughts (think about it): Did you know about the rip job Vanity Fair did on a presidential candidate’s wife? Prior to reading it, we heard this candidate’s wife uses marriage as the perfect steppingstone to satisfy her own greed. Imagine our shock, when we saw the article was about Rudy Giuliani’s wife, Judith. It even takes a swipe at Judith for changing her name from Judy once she “grabbed his power.” Silly us, we thought it was about Hillary Clinton; whoops, we mean Hillary RODHAM Clinton. *** Glad to see Dennis Kucinich still on the Democrate presidential campaign trail. This is the man who bankrupted Cleveland as mayor and did yeoman nothing duty as a member of Congress. He could be the most under-funded of all White House candidates, but he probably figures it’s the last frontier he can mess up, the Big Trifecta, if you will. *** Quiet on the set! WRITERS’ RULES

Wanna write us a letter? You can do it a couple ways. The easiest is to e-mail it to info@currentincarmel.com. The old-fashioned way is to snail mail it to

CITY IN JEOPARDY Editor: Times are good in Carmel. But decisions being made today are putting our future in jeopardy. Spending is out of control. In the first 155 years of Carmel’s history, its debt slowly accumulated up to a manageable $60 million – and then, in the past five years, our debt has grown from $60 million to $300 million. We are borrowing from our future to pay for wasteful spending today and give the current mayor a slush fund for projects with no real control. And our City Council has rubber stamped whatever the mayor has wanted. Now there are storm clouds on the horizon. The slow down in housing means that growth will slow – meaning the city will lack the funds to pay back all this borrowed money. Taxes are going to rise – and police and fire departments will be cut. The only alternative may be more high-density housing that will erode our quality of life – meaning more crowded classrooms for our kids and more traffic problems. It’s time for someone to ask hard questions

Steve Greenberg & Brian Kelly *** The Guv and “Mayor Jim,” as Mitch Daniels calls Jim Brainard, did a good thing getting Keystone Avenue (soon to be Keystone Parkway) into Carmel’s hands. We hope, at the appropriate time, city council bars all truck traffic from what should be a spectacular thoroughfare. Send ’em all – every last one of them – over to U.S. 31. *** Thanks to Sarann Warner for writing us. Her letter is published below. Last week in this space, we ripped some candidates for not sending their thoughts along to Carmel’s Best Weekly Newspaper™. We encourage others to follow suit. You send it, we’ll print it, and every household in Carmel will see it. Current in Carmel, 1 South Range Line Road, Carmel, IN 46032. Keep letters to 100 words max (we may make exceptions), and be sure to include your home zip code and a daytime number for verification. and help make serious plans for our future. I’ve built two small businesses, been active in civic affairs, helped raise funds to support our senior citizen – and raised three children and five grandchildren in this area. We can preserve our quality of life, make sure we have great schools, and keep taxes down – if we stop reckless spending, excessive borrowing, and hyper growth. Help bring new voices for new choices to Carmel. Sarann Warner Candidate, City Council

HE SHOWED COURAGE Editor: Jeff Worrell’s article in the Sept. 4th Current on Richard Jewell really hit home. As a parade spectator in ’01, the only thing Carmel parade fans threw at Richard that day was lots of applause. True, he showed much courage during his short life but also endured much torment. The decision by the parade committee to bring him to Carmel as the parade leader was the right thing to do. John Lippman 46032 More letters on page 5.

END DOG FIGHTING

Editor: Hey. Lighten up Dawn Archer and Jeannie Fredrickson and all you Carmel Blue Noses. This is not the New York Times. I find Danielle Wilson’s columns funny, pertinent and appropriate for life in suburbia. Bryce Richard 46032

SHE CAN RELATE Dear Danielle: I thought the letters to the editor from Dawn and Jeannie were completely ridiculous. Ever since I discovered your column a few months ago, I snatch up my Current In Carmel and flip to your column as soon as it arrives. As a mother of a 4-year-old girl, 2-yearold girl, and about to deliver my third child (this time a boy), I completely relate to your column and it provides such entertainment and humor. You do excellent work and I hope you continue to write about all sorts of topics, even the so-called “on the edge” subjects. Melanie Kerr 46032

Editor: Thank you, thank you, and thank you for the article that you wrote about Michael Vick in the Current. I am a Carmel citizen that is outraged about what Michael Vick did and supported with the money that he received from the NFL. I am not a huge football fan or ESPN fan, I am however a dog lover. Anyone who supports this type of activity should be punished to the full limit. It is beyond my imagination how anyone could receive enjoyment out of watching two innocent animals tear apart one another. This type of activity has to stop. By speaking out and through articles are great ways to put pressure on law enforcement to take serious action against those that participate in this sort of activity. J. Johnston 46032

“When you believe in what you do, you just make the time.” The cancer survivors that served as stars of the show are especially inspirational to Kepple. She believes they were even more inspirational to those in the crowd that came to support the work that the American Cancer Society does. Kepple said, “Our models this year have all looked death in the face, and won.” Working with cancer as a major part of her job every day, Kepple wants you to know that this year more than 30,000 Hoosiers will be

diagnosed with cancer and 13,000 will die of the disease. Many forms of cancer are survivable, especially when the disease is detected in its earliest stages. How many times have we heard that before? The fashion show not only raised $50,000 to go toward research, but also awareness that could help save a life. Kepple hopes it is yours. ll eyes focused on the latest fashions for the well-dressed cowboy and cowgirl, while the models strutted their stuff on the long runway before a huge crowd of supporters. All of the models had one thing in common: they each survived the big “C.” From breast cancer to leukemia, the survivors became the face of the American Cancer Society’s Stars, Stetsons and Stilettos Fashion Show held recently in Indianapolis. Our own Dr. Julie Kepple from Carmel Surgical Specialists donated countless hours as this year’s co-chair for the event. Her name doesn’t ring any bells? Maybe it is because she just Jeff Worrell moved to Carmel and CarmelCan! decided to jump in with both feet and take the lead position for the 11th annual event. When I asked her how a busy surgeon finds time to volunteer for a major event, she stated what seemed to her to be the obvious.

Remember the cover story we did on the 1985 Rolls Royce Corniche convertible that was confiscated from a drug dealer by the Hamilton County Drug Task Force (Current In Carmel, July 24, 2007)? Well, it just went through the auction house (Kesler-Schaefer Wholesale Auto Auction in Indianapolis) on Sept. 6. After active bidding from several people in the crowd, the car brought $32,000. A Porsche confiscated from the same dealer went for $15,000. The task force should net about $30,000 from the two sales, after auction fees, document fees and legal costs are paid, according to Sgt. Charlie Driver.

WE CAN OVERCOME EVIL, ONE PERSON AT A TIME

ept. 11, 2007 — the sixth anniversary of America’s most devastating attack. How can we combat such an evil spirit? The hatred that lurks in some people is beyond reason. These evil doers are parents and/or children of parents. I find it hard to believe that anyone with a heart has the fervor to destroy humanity. know that unless we take our own families and elevate and perpetuate our goodness and decencies, we can succumb to evil. It is our responsibility, duty and God-given right to raise our children to be whole — spiritually and mentally — and to ensure that they live in a world of decency.

This is within our control. My mother taught me to honor and devote myself to three things in my life: God, country and family. With these three values — nothing can be taken from us. When we pass these on to our children — we are teaching them that, regardless of the devastation, they will prevail because they carry these values in their hearts and nothing or no one can eradicate them. May God continue to bless our children with decency and America with goodness. Hugs! Ask Yia Yia (grandmother in Greek), aka Becky Kapsalis, is a mom, grandmother and certified parent coach. We have been attending Lifepointe for more than a year and know that we have found a Christian home. People are friendly and really care about every person that walks through the door. Lifepointe Church is a real casual church that encourages everyone to come as they are to worship and grow. Your competitive advantage has to have value, be unique, and have some barrier that will prevent others from copying it. It is not uncommon for a competitor to come along and deliver an existing business’ competitive advantage better than that company. It is helpful if there is a barrier to prevent other companies from copying your advantage. Take a look at what you think you deliver and identify which of these items really has value, is unique, and tough to copy. You might be surprised. Once you understand yourself, your audience, and your value proposition, you are ready to craft your message. Remember, a great story will alter behavior. It will make you cheer for someone unexpected (think Olympics) or make you go out of your way to support something. Yet few businesses tell a compelling story — a story that sticks. Effective marketing varies based on the identified goals, but the central theme should always be to tell a great story: a story that makes people want to do business with you; a story that makes people want you to win; and a story that resonates and keeps your company in people’s mind long after they’ve heard your message (or story). David Cain For marketing On Marketing to be effective and to tell a story that is aligned with your company, you have to understand the following key elements. 1. What’s your business? CINNAMON MAY HELP CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR

nless it is the upcoming holidays, cinnamon is not one of those spices you would automatically think of when planning an American meal. It is commonly used in the Middle East in tender chicken and juicy lamb dishes. Cinnamon bark is one of the oldest tonic plants in the world. The ancients Theophrastus, Herodotus, Galen, Dioscorides, Pliny and Strebo all mention it Cinnamon, the most common baking spice, is the dried bark of various laurel trees in the cinnamomum family. Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka and India. CinWendell Fowler namon has a sweet, woody fragrance in both ground and stick forms. It has been used as tasty medicine for more than 5,000 years. Why do we only use it at certain times of the year? Our culture. Traditionally, it was for colds, flu and digestive problems and is still used in much the same way today, just not in America. We tend not to look at spices as medicine. In the new millennium, we can now add

cinnamon’s ability to the arsenal that regulates the blood sugar of people with Type 2 Diabetes. Dr. Mercola.com announced that in a test-tube study, the spice appeared to increase glucose metabolism by about 20 times. It’s a delicious way to control your diabetes and maybe a much better option than organ-stressing pharmaceuticals. Always see your family doctor, however, before playing doctor with what everyone says you’ll always have (you’ve always got your health). Cinnamon can also be useful to people with Type 2 Diabetes by reducing the amount of insulin necessary to metabolize glucose. Researchers found that a mere one-eighth of a teaspoon of cinnamon can triple insulin efficiency. The Chinese believe that cinnamon heats up a cold body, improves circulation and generally causes the blood to rush, which in turn, removes toxins faster. The ancient treatment reduces triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol levels, relieves congestion, menstrual discomfort, has anti-inflammatory compounds that may relieve

arthritis, helps prevent urinary tract infections, gum disease, and it is a dominant antimicrobial that can annihilate E.coli. It is also an antiseptic, astringent, aids digestion, antispasmodic, antibacterial, antifungal antiviral, anti-nausea, anti-gas, antidiarrheal, hypoglycemic, promotes sweating to reduce toxins, uterine stimulant and a warming stimulant. Dr. Richard Anderson, lead scientist at the Beltsville, Md.-based Human Nutrition Research Center, and a branch of the USDA, explains that a compound in cinnamon called methhydroxy causes insulin to bind to cells, disabling the naughty enzyme that blocks the metabolism of glucose. Don’t go crazy with it, however. High doses can be toxic Be adventurous. Experiment at home by adding cinnamon to some of your chicken or lamb dishes and eat your tasty medicine. SEEK THE OUTCOME YOU WANT WITH A DETAILED ACTION PLAN

By Bob Pepper

The EPA states that poor indoor air quality is as high as the fourth largest environmental threat, and the indoor air that you breathe could be 100 to 200 times worse for you than outdoor air. Americans spend an average of 90 percent of their time indoors, so indoor air quality does matter. Since the energy crunch in the mid- to late-1970s, the construction of homes has changed to help conserve energy. We have seen insulation requirements improve in the walls, ceiling and the floors. Windows and doors have also improved. All these improvements have helped cut the cost of heating and cooling your home, helped improve comfort, and also saved in the cost of the heating and cooling equipment by reducing the size of furnace and air conditioner that is needed. These are great improvements, but they have reduced the amount

of air infiltration (when outside air leaks into a home). If the air in the home is contaminated, this can affect your health, although not everyone is affected to the same degree. Some people with allergies might not be able to live in the house without improvements. When someone gets sick, that virus is in the air of the house and can affect others. In some cases, a better air filter, and using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, can help with minor allergies. A lot of products are available to help clean, humidify and dehumidify the air you breathe. There are air-to-air heat exchangers that efficiently bring in outside air and exchange it with indoor air. Since we spend so much of our lives inside our homes and workplaces, it’s important to consider the quality of our environment.

DISPATCH PRICE CUT HELPS PS3: U.S. sales of video games and hardware rose 37 percent in July, with Sony’s struggling PlayStation 3 console getting a major boost from a price cut in the month, industry data showed. Total sales hit $925.5 million in the month, compared with $675.6 million a year earlier, spurred by strong interest in consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, figures from market research firm NPD showed. Sony sold 159,000 units of the PlayStation 3, which had seen monthly sales drop to less than 100,000 units in each of the previous three months, after cutting the price by $100, to $500. — zdnet.com

very year from now until I die (or maybe until I just can’t remember what I can’t remember), I will always associate today (9/11) with disaster. For that reason I am writing about how to avoid disaster with something very important to all of us, the data on our computer. Did you know? • A hard drive crashes every 15 seconds. • 2,000 laptops are stolen or lost every day. • 1 in 5 computers suffers a fatal hard drive crash during their lifetime. • 31 percent of PC Gary Hubbard users have lost all Technology of their files due to events beyond their control. • 60 percent of companies that lose all their data will shut down within six months of the disaster. • The overall average failure rate of disk drives is 100 percent, because all drives eventually fail. • And another hard drive just crashed while you were reading this.

Will one of yours be next? Are you prepared? If you ask your IT department (if you have one), they will assure you that the primary servers are being backed up every day and that an off-site data storage component is in place, so no matter what happens, the company is covered. This is not usually the case because as much as 60 percent of a company’s mission critical data resides on hard drives that are not being backed up. Your mobile sales team, your CEO’s laptop, remote users or offices; the list can go on and on. In reality, getting 100 percent compliance from all users is virtually impossible because of a single hurdle: human nature. Everyone knows that a hard drive could fail at any moment, but no one thinks it’s going to happen to them, so they will do it tomorrow. I have heard this so many times from our customers who found out waiting until tomorrow was a really bad idea. For the personal computer at home it just as dangerous. There is no other computer in the home with those valuable pictures, songs and e-mail addresses on it. When it crashes, you could lose everything.

Even with the realization that their future is in jeopardy, statistically only one in four users will regularly back up their files. Why? It’s generally thought to be too technical or time consuming. But, 100 percent of all data loss is PREVENTABLE! It’s as simple as backing up the data, and it is simple. You just have to do it. The best chances for success and a huge time saver for the IT department and for your home computer for when (not if ) a hard drive crashes, is an automatic whole drive imaging system. It is very low cost compared to data recovery and once it is set up, most can be scheduled to do the backup automatically or with a simple touch of a button. When the hard drive crashes you can have your IT person or company simply load your backup image onto your new hard drive and your computer is just like it was when you made your last backup. If you have questions call a professional, but DON”T WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW. Gary Hubbard is owner of Data Doctors Computer Services, www.datadoctors.com. Have a technology question? am quite prepared to step on some toes with the following observation. Home shows seem to be popping up on every corner. These are the professionally executed houses that are supposed to exemplify the best that interior and exterior design has to offer. We can purchase tickets to cross the threshold of beautiful living via the Decorators Show House, Home A Rama, the Luxury Home A Rama, the Luxury Home Tour and the Dream Home. They have different names and benVicky Earley Decor eďŹ t different causes, but the end result is melding into a blur of average. The “ideaâ€? homes of recent years seem to be showing the same ďŹ nished product repeatedly. There are times it seems as if the houses are snow globes that have been shaken. The pieces fall in different places, but the basic elements remain the same. I recall a day when, upon entering such

a professionally designed home, I would be speechless. Today I can enter, size the work up in minutes and be on my way. I am not sure if I am jaded by professional exposure or just bored. I tend to think the latter. The original concept of the home show was supposed to be an event designed for homeowners in all stages of remodeling, landscaping and decorating the home. The purchase of a ticket to a designer showcase meant that the homeowner could expect to experience the equivalent of a design recital. It would be ďŹ lled with primo examples of fresh ideas and

products. Armed with this combination of new products and fresh ideas from the pros, homeowners could move forward, inspired by countless ideas on enhancing their home’s comfort and functionality, as well as the aesthetic appeal and overall value. The decor of the most recent home show was fairly predictable. The one house that stood out was the result of work by “The Inside Job. It was simply the beautiful and classic design that made it shine. I maintain that with the volume of home show tours, excellent design is diluted. Perhaps I have simply seen one too many themed basements, one many overdone theater ry too rooms, and one too many famthe Luxu r ily rooms devoid of personalHome Tou ity ... all hallmarks of the overdone home tour circuit.

A number of Carmel watercolorists are having great success this fall, with backto-back exhibitions at local galleries. Three members of the Hamilton County Artists’ Association are showing both at the HCAA’s September exhibition, “From Field to Finish,” and with the Watercolor Society of Indiana’s October display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Linda Bachofner, who showed her works in August at the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery, Carmel, has also been accepted to the WSI exhibition. For the HCAA exhibit, which is up until Oct. 27, Dorothy Chase painted from a photograph she took at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. “It’s a beautiful place,” Chase said. “I took a photograph while I was relaxing on a bench, and that’s what I decided to submit to the show.” Chase, a self-taught artist, began painting after seeing how much her daughter enjoyed working in pastels. She likes painting nature scenes, animals and still life. “In my paintings, I try to capture the simple and elegant wonder found in nature, along with the detailed beauty often seen,” the retired biology teacher said. Connie Sands submitted an image from a

point closer to home, “Wading in White River.” The sketch and larger piece show nearly identical viewpoints, though the artist took license with color in the finished work. Amateur artist Bruce Moore hung an abstract painted on high-gloss, synthetic Yupo paper. Moore has only been painting about seven years, and he’s more interested in abstract imagery than landscapes. “The first picture I made was a success, and fell in love with the process,” he said. Moore finds time to paint on weekends and in the early morning before heading off to

Paradise Bakery Cafe opened at Clay Terrace in October 2004. “The location at Clay Terrace has a lot of mothers and children come in regularly. There is a great family atmosphere there,” said Debbie Miller, catering manager. Paradise is known for its cookies, which won first place at Zoobilation, an event at the Indianapolis Zoo. “This was our first time participating. Lots of restaurants enter, and it’s a big deal for everyone,” Miller said. Paradise makes everything fresh in the store. Choices range from salads to panini sandwiches. Paradise also caters events. “When we cater for events, our blue cheese salad gets a lot of praise. There are blue cheese crumbles with sunflower seeds and cranberries,” Miller said. At the end of the day, Paradise Bakery gives leftover food to church missions and shelters in the area.
