The Compassion Experience’s faith Change the Story brings that vision to your community. The free, interactive mobile tour will be at Hazel Dell Christian Church, 14501 Hazel Dell Pkwy., from Aug. 21 to 24.

The exhibit takes visitors on a 20-minute journey of children’s lives in the Philippines and Kenya.

There will be 2,000 square feet of exhibit space, showing what life is like in schools, homes and markets. Through the use of an iPod with a headset, the tour is guided by a child’s voice.

It is presented by Compassion International, the world’s largest Christian child development organization. Through the Child Sponsorship

Mayor urges quick passage of anti-discrimination ordinance

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard is urging quick passage of an anti-discrimination ordinance that will be introduced city council at the Carmel City Council meeting Aug. 17.

A rally will take place at 5 p.m. outside Carmel City Hall to urge councilors to not send the bill to committee and instead suspend the rules and vote to pass the bill immediately.

Brainard said it’s a big Brainard deal because there’s no protection of this kind for groups statewide based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

The law takes aim at not just government agencies but also private businesses and gives the city the ability to fine businesses for discriminating unfairly.

This new law comes on the heels of fallout from the passage of the statewide Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The contentious piece of legislation that led some Indiana businesses to threaten to move because they viewed it as hostile toward the gay and lesbian community.

“It becomes important for Carmel to make a statement to the business community and others that we treat others fairly,” he said.

“Not that there’s a problem, but to make a statement. I had business leaders tell me

that they hired new employees from the East Coast and these (potential) employees told them they were going to decline the employment offers. So yes, it was a concern.”

The idea for the law came about after an election debate between Brainard and his opponent for mayor, City Council President Rick Sharp. Both candidates said they would support such a law and Sharp is one of the six sponsors.

“It’s one of the few things we actually agreed on,” Brainard said.

Brainard pointed out that one exception is for churches or religious institutions, but not the businesses Seidensticker they might own or operate, such as the coffee shop owned by Northview Church.

City Councilor Eric Seidensticker did not sponsor the bill and hasn’t decided if he’ll vote on it. He said he doesn’t discriminate in his own business, Maco Press, but that he thinks it’s not government’s role to tell private businesses what to do.

“I think the private sector can handle this,” he said. “If a business discriminates then people will stop going there and they’ll lose money. I don’t have such little faith in people that I think a law is necessary to prevent discrimination.”

Seidensticker said the best remedy is for parents to teach their children that discrimination is wrong. He said he thinks the ordinance was drafted to score political points.

COMMUNITY obituaries Karen D. Wilson, 63, of Indianapolis, died on Aug. 4 at her home. She was born on Oct. 1, 1951, to Jerald and Dorothea (Hartman) Kinney in Noblesville.

Karen was a graduate of Noblesville High School Class of 1969 and Indiana Business College. She worked as an account manager for Next Gear Capital in Carmel and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Carmel. Karen is survived by Wilson her daughter, Amanda (Scott) Evans; sister, Linda (Dennis) McMurray; grandchildren, Hailey Wilson and Jaxton Evans; sister-inlaw, Teresa Kinney; niece, Nicole (Jake) Klivansky; nephews, Travis Humphrey and Thomas Kinney; and a great-niece, Keira Humphrey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Stephen Kinney and Kevin Kinney. Editor, The City of Carmel is considering an ordinance which would prohibit businesses from discriminating against homosexuals. Such an idea has merit. In most cases one’s sexual life has nothing to do with the rendering of business products or services. However, I can think of two exceptions to such a proposal.

First, businesses should not be forced to cater to homosexual weddings. Such a requirement would violate the Constitution’s First Amendment of religious freedom. Second, parents and guardians should have the right not to have their children under the age of 17 supervised by homosexuals. To require such supervision might subject those children to obvious or subtle or hidden homosexual influences.

Prevail of Hamilton County will host its 2015 Signature Gala on Aug. 22 at the Renaissance Hotel in Carmel. The orgafundraiser nization exists to educate and engage the community to prevent crime and abuse while helping restore the lives of those who have been affected. The funds raised go toward assisting clients.

“We assist all victims of violent crime and abuse.

That includes men, women, adolescents and children,” Robinson said Natasha Robinson, Prevail public relations coordinator. “Sexual assault and domestic violence are the largest piece of what we do, but we also assist those secondary victims. Secondary victims are parents of a child who has been sexually assaulted, or someone who was a witness to any kind of violent crime.”

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour and silent auction followed by a black tie optional dinner at 8 p.m. The program begins at 8:30 p.m. with a guest speaker.

“We start the program with a speaker that Prevail has assisted. It’s a secondary victim, so her child went through our sexual assault services,” Robinson said.

Last year’s event raised more than $147,000 and this year organizers are hoping to raise at least $150,000. The cost to attend is $100 per person with sponsored tables costing $1,250.

The live and silent auctions include items for men, women, children, travel and food.

“Some of the highlights of what we have are gift certificates for golf, a taste of Westfield package, Handlebar Indy rental, Indy Eleven tickets, concert tickets for Klipsch, a Sip and Sparkle event at Smith’s Jewelers and a personal chef dinner from Matteo’s. He will actually come to someone’s house and cook for them,” Robinson said.

By Navar Watson • news@currentincarmel.com There are many books about how to take a good photo, but few exist on how to get that photo in a gallery.

Books Carmel author Kara Lane set out to find the “how” in her book, “From Photographer to Gallery Artist.” The book debuted July 14 and made number one new release in two different Amazon categories.

It started as a project for a friend, but Lane quickly grew interested in the topic.

Though photography was invented in 1839, it wasn’t until the 1980s that galleries Lane actually recognized it as fine art, Lane learned.

“It’s kind of the new kid on the block,” she said. “No wonder [my friend] didn’t know how to get into a gallery. This is pretty new.”

Lane’s friend, Tenna Merchent, knew the technical side of photography, but she didn’t know the business side. She asked Lane, a former vice president at Golden Rule Insurance Company, to create a business model for getting photography into galleries.

Lane reached out to more than 60 top art

galleries that feature photography, asking curators what they specifically look for in submissions.

“Talent alone is not enough,” Lane said. “If no one knows who you are, it doesn’t matter how talented you are. You’ll never get out of your studio.”

Megan Carr will have one final crack in the World Youth Climbing Championships, since she will be forced to speed climbing move to the adult division in 2016.

“My goal is to have fun,” said Carr of her upcoming trip to the International Federation of Sport Climbing world tournament in Arco, Italy. “This is my last go-around (in youth division) but I would like to place better than I have in the past.”

The 2014 Carmel High School graduate was eighth in the world in speed climbing (on a 15-meter wall) in the girls 16-17 division in Canada in 2013 and 10th in the world in Singapore in the 16-17 class in 2012.

Carr, who trains at Hoosier Heights in Carmel, will have four days to train in Italy before the competition on Sept. 4.

She qualified by finishing third in her girls 18-19 speed climbing division in the national climbing championships in Atlanta in July.

Carr, who will be a sophomore at Indiana University, won her 18-19 division in nationals in 2014 and qualified for the world tourney in Austria, but couldn’t go because of missing too much of her first year in college.

“I started climbing on the official speed wall when I was 11,” said Carr, who competed in the pole vault for CHS. “Speed has always been my favorite and I’m best at it. I love that it’s so specific. It’s one route, everyone knows it and you just have to do it as fast as you can.”

Reality TV provides lessons

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com Since graduating from Carmel High School in 2013, Sydne Horton has been studying television directing and achievement producing at Columbia College in Chicago. This summer she got to put her skills to the test in the real world through an internship with the Television Academy Foundation.

Only 30 to 50 students are selected for the prestigious internship each year, and Horton knew it would be a longshot to get accepted.

Still, she completed the lengthy interview process, which included an essay, transcripts and a video interview.

Her hard work paid off, as she was selected to participate in the reality division.

She’s been working with Collins Avenue Entertainment, which produces shows that include Dance Moms and Raising Asia.

“They’ve been so awesome. They’ve let me shadow story producers, work with casting and help out with production,” Horton said. “I was surprised with how much creative control they’ve given me. I help them pitch new show ideas, or I’ll research information for show ideas they’re trying to sell to networks.”

tion of unscripted shows in a college course, where she found success.

“We had to pitch reality-based competition shows. On the fifth week of that class, we all had to decide to pursue two of those ideas and compete against each other,” she said.

“My idea was chosen for one team, and we produced it all the way through.”

Horton will return to Columbia College for one more year, but hopes to work with the Collins Avenue Entertainment in the future.

Her end goal is to become a story or line producer. Even though she loves the reality segment, she’d love to eventually get into scripted television.

Carmel residents Angela and Steve Standifer always dreamed of traveling the world during their retirement. After a travel recent death in the family, the couple decided not to wait to begin their trip of a lifetime.

This is no ordinary vacation, though. They have decided to live as nomads bouncing from place to place. Angela quit her job, and the couple has sold most of its possessions.

“We decided to sell everything—the house, all of our furniture and my car. We’re putting a few things in storage, and we’re going to go see the world,” said Angela Standifer.

The Standifers visited Italy in March, and Steve’s grandmother passed away within a few days of their return home. During a long trek to New Mexico and back for the funeral, the couple had plenty of time to reflect on life goals.

“One of the things his grandmother regretted at the end of her life was that she and his grandfather had never really traveled anywhere,” Angela said. “They had planned to go see Alaska and they never got there.”

New car dealership planned

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com A new 96th Street car dealership is in the works in Carmel, offering Maserati, Fiat and Alfa Romeo plan commission vehicles.

Planned for north of the existing Butler car dealerships, construction will be on 1.43 acres. The new building will be adjacent to the new Butler Hyundai dealership. The buildings will be part of a complex that shares drives and access.

The new building will be at 4200 E. 96th St. and will be approximately 21,967 square feet. The site will have 40 parking spaces for customers, staff and service and 34 spaces for inventory.

There have been questions about floodplain mitigation on the site. A floodplain drainage shed will be located off site, but there were questions about how much storage would be needed to deal with the issue. There were also questions about where water/storage area would be located to provide a buffer to neighbors.

State Fair J.T. McCallister of Fishers Reynolds Farm Equipment Sales Force was ready to teach, serve and inform farm goers about the various farm equipment and merchandise available at the Mac Reynolds Barn. Reynolds played a big part of the Indiana State Fair this year by organizing the first ‘Light Up the Night’ spectacular tractor parade. A huge hit for all to see in the Indiana State Fair grandstands.

The day was jammed packed and kicked off with a giant hot air balloon launch. Other highlights included a free concert by the Indigo Girls and the first ever ‘Light Up the Night’ parade sponsored by Reynolds Farm Equipment. There were huge elephant ears, fried Velvet Oreo’s and mouthwatering milk shakes from the famous round Dairy Barn. I opted for the delicious standard pork sandwich, corn on the cob and fried green tomatoes – Yep, I said fried … Yikes, it’s not an easy place to go when counting calories. It was fun to see the farm animals and learn some facts from the educational exhibits throughout the buildings and halls. I even went on a Midway ride just for the thrill of it, and trust me, it was a hoot. The Indiana State Fair is a staple in our Indiana community and culture.

I would encourage you to be adventurous and take the fair train from Fishers.

It’s easy and something different for all ages to experience. Be sure to check out The Mac Reynolds Barn where you can grab some cool John Deere merchandise and climb aboard a huge tractor as big as a house. Ok, so I am joking about the house part but, trust me – the 2015 Indiana State Fair is celebrating the ‘Year of the Farmer’ and it’s pretty darn cool.

The ‘Light Up the Night’ parade was led by a tractor donated to the Northern Indiana Historical Power Asscociation by Ruth and Jack Jarnecke. The crowd rose to their feet and placed their hands over their hearts as our American Flag rolled on by.

The Indigo Girls gave a free concert to hundreds of fans and was a true fairgoers treat. The fans cheered with sheer delight as they played their break out hit “Power of Two.” “Where’s Amy?” had a chance to talk to these old soul music songwriter/singers who said they said they loved to share their music, enjoyed their Indiana tour and thought our Indiana State Fair was the best.

The stage was rocking and The Indigo Girls proved they are stronger than ever.

I was joined by fellow Carmel judges Sam Watermeier from Nuvo, Ben Johnson, The Film Yap and my colleague Scott Tucker of Talent Fusion Model Agency, Indianapolis. The night was full of surprises and cheers as we watched more than 35 short films in two blocks. Filmmakers from all over the Indianapolis and area competed to see who could make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film of the night was “DESSERT” produced by Swipe Left Productions. Next Swipe Left Productions will go up against films from around the world at Filmapalooza 2016 for a chance at the grand prize and an opportunity to screen at the Cannes Film Festival 2016, Court Métrage.

What an exciting night by all who participated and attended.

Library director Goolsby brings wealth of experience to new role

Meet Carolyn goolsby

It took nearly a year in a Roman Catholic monastery, but Carolyn Goolsby discovered her true calling was beCover story ing a librarian.

Goolsby, who is also a Jeopardy champion and weightlifting record holder, decided to take some time for personal reflection after the grandmother who raised her went into a nursing home. Goolsby had been her grandmother’s caregiver as she battled Alzheimer’s disease.

“I was in the position to consider the religious life,” said Goolsby, who served at Our Lady of Angels monastery in Crozet, Va. “I couldn’t have done it any earlier or wouldn’t have because I had obligations. If you ponder doing something different with your life, you should do it. It was a great experience to have.”

Although it was hard work, Goolsby said she learned a lot about herself during 10 months in the monastery.

“I learned what I really want to do is public library work,” said Goolsby, 49. “I’ve not looked back.

I think working in the library is the best job

• Personal: Grew up in Savannah, Ga. Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Armstrong State University in Savannah. Earned a master’s degree from the University of Maryland.

• Hobbies: Weightlifting. She was a champion in the AllRound Weightlifting Association National Championship in 2002. “I was the only woman in my weight class,” Goolsby said.

“I did set five world records.

It was fun, but I dislocated my shoulder training for 2003 nationals and that was it.”

• Favorite author: “Right now it’s George R.R. Martin because I worked my way through his A Song of Ice and Fire series. I enjoyed J.K. Rowling’s books, not just Harry Potter. If I had to pick an author I wouldn’t want to be without, it would be Terry Pratchett.”

• Favorite way to relax: “Cooking in my kitchen with a nice glass of wine.”

library. The list narrowed to seven candidates for Skype interviews and four were selected for in-person interviews.

Ranjit Puthran, the Carmel library board president and search committee head, said the search committee and board were impressed that Goolsby had previous library director experience, serving as director of Wood Buffalo Regional Library in Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, for the past two and a half years. She ran a staff of 50 people, representing a geographic area of 27,500 square miles.

Puthran said Goolsby’s strengths include budgeting, innovation, understanding emerging trends and implementing strategic plans.

“We can see her as the face and voice of the library,” Puthran said.

Goolsby had already been working for libraries and teaching library science at Florida State before starting the monastery stint in 2006. After the monastery, Goolsby served as the technical services manager at the Tacoma

(Wash.) Public Library. She then took on the challenge of the post at Wood Buffalo.

“I had people I could only reach by bush plane or the Ice Road,” Goolsby said. “It was an adventure.”

Although she enjoyed her time in Canada, Goolsby wanted to return to the U.S., and Carmel seemed a great fit.

“The city has completely charmed me,” Goolsby said. “Carmel has wonderful support for the library. We have dedicated long-time employees. I’m a big proponent of give-themwhat-they-want library. I don’t think it’s our place to tell people what they should read.

My job is operating the library. The library board members are the people in charge. We’ll be building upon the great work Wendy has done the last 15 years. Carmel is one of the highest-rated libraries for its size. And pound for pound, I think it beats New York Public in a fair fight.”

There is perhaps no time more appropriate for a repeat viewing of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” performance than the modern American cultural climate, if you ask director Liz Stark.

“It’s a classical piece without being classical,” Stark said. “It’s something I always found odd growing up watching it. ‘Why would people have issue with the race of somebody they might be interested in?’ It still feels very relevant in today’s society.”

“South Pacific” tells the story of two separate but similar romances during World War II. The first tells of an American nurse stationed in the South Pacific who falls in love with a French expatriate but struggles to accept his mixed-race children. The second portrays a romance between a U.S. Lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, both fearful for the consequences of their mixed-race relationship.

“South Pacific” will run for a total of 49 performances from Aug. 20 to Oct. 4 at the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre at 9301 Michigan Rd, Indianapolis. Free parking is available.

you’re [young] and somehow it’s embedded in your brain as you grow up,” Stark said.

For actor Jeff Stockberger (as Luther Billis), it’s all about loyalty between the roles they play.

“When things go kind of crazy, everyone is looking out for each other. Even the ones you wouldn’t expect,” Stockberger said. “We have a short period of time to work together and seem like we really know each other. It’s very much the same idea as what’s happening [in South Pacific.]”

Deb Wims is also slated to reprise her role as main lead Nellie Forbush. Newcomer Robert Wilde is slated to play the French plantation owner Emile de Becque.

Next up is the Mack Lovin’ at Mackenzie River Pizza. This great dessert consists of warm chocolate chip cookies, served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. St. George festival back Sept. 19

St. George Church will bring Byzantine ethnic food, live music, a children’s carnival, a silent auction and more during the festival.

Above all the attractions, the multicultural aspect of the festival and church is what parishioner David Sumner feels stands out the most.

“Our church was established by immigrants from Syria in 1926,” Sumner said. “We have three main purposes for the festival. One is outreach to the community, and introduce the church.”

Sumner added that other purposes for the festival are to introduce the community to Byzantine food, acquaint attendees with the significant architecture, and fundraise for the church’s bills.

Reverend Nabil Hanna, who immigrated to America with his family in the late 1960’s, echoes the importance of these multicultural roots.

2 from GOP have a clue

We’ve been rather critical of the Republican presidential candidates, and we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the future of the two major parties. It dawns on us that perhaps the Republicans are actually going through a process in which they may be attempting to reinvent the party and platform. Say what you will about Donald Trump, but he’s acknowledging – perhaps not so eloquently at times – that he’s for real change; his lack of eloquence doesn’t bother us. We remember that eloquent politician back in 2008 that won the presidency, and look what it got us.

Change? To be clear, we believe only Trump and, maybe, Carly Fiorina, are getting it; we would never go so far as to claim the Republican Party has a clue. That party has been taken over by liberals, hence the huge financial support of Jeb Bush. But the group that clearly doesn’t get it is the Democratic Party.

Look at that pitiful field. An accomplishmentfree wife of a former president; a socialist; and a former governor no one thinks about. Same failed policies and ideas from the left. So pitiful is the field that there’s actually a movement to get Vice President Joe Biden in it. As pitiful as the Republicans are, at least they can claim their inclusion of a change agent or two. As for the Democrats, it would be the third term of Obama.

••• Carmel is the latest municipality to attempt to get a law on the books that further protects residents from discrimination based on every conceivable criterion. A city council vote on Aug. 17 was to have spun it into law. We get why it’s being done. It’s a sad commentary, though, on how low society has plunged.

No pain: Rite of passage?

Commentary by Terry Anker The aphorisms of life make it easy for us to communicate complex statements in a sentence or two. Mantras, bumper stickers and t-shirts all serve to distill complex ideas down to single, easily digestible thoughts. Often they express truisms so overwhelmingly accurate that they are almost redundant. Yet we employ them to remind us that patterns of behavior can guide our actions into unknown or uncomfortable situations. Song writers and poets use them to effectively in framing thorny questions and challenging the basic suppositions of human interaction. “People are people” said British band Depeche Mode in 1984. Quite right. But they push the obvious to ask if we are so much alike, how is it that “you and I get along so awfully?” How can we be entirely similar and totally different in the same instant?

Life is good – is my personal favorite.

The truism reminds me that as long as we

live, we have all options open to us. We can change. We can learn. We can engage. Or, not. The phrase – encourages us by noting that even a bad day is still filled with opportunity. One might assume that its counterpoint must be death is bad? Perhaps. Or, is it just another step in life. The three little words have stuck with me for decades.

While enjoying a vintage whiskey with a close friend one evening earlier this summer, he shared his chosen expression for good living – “no pain, no pain.” The take on the more common “no pain, no gain” echoed days later. Can we choose to live a life without pain? Can we simply let it pass through us without lament? Or, should we experience the pain as an earned right-of-passage?

I’ve been belting out “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” tunes for a solid hour.

Today especially is monumental because for the first time ever, all four humor of our children were able to clamber up onto that beautiful yellow bus. After 10 years, 10 months, and 15 days, “I’ve got a golden ticket.”

Making this moment even brighter was the dark backdrop of summer. “Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-do. I’ve got an easy puzzle for you. What do you get when summer gets old? Ten fights a day and many tears to behold! Boredom set in as soon as early June came. I know exactly what’s to blame!

Ah-ha. No school structure or routine! La la la la la la la!”

The first two weeks were nice, but evolved into the usual inconsistent schedules, lousy weather and friends out of town while we weren’t. Inevitably, these led to several Veruca Salt incidents, a whole herd of Mike TV impersonations, and one controversial Augustus Glute fiasco which I will not discuss here. I was often so frazzled that I just gave in. They tune in; I check out. That’s poor parenting at its finest.

I don’t know about your kids, but mine fair much better when they have routine.

Camp would solve the problem nicely if it weren’t for those pesky payments they’re so insistent upon. Twenty-five bucks per day per child? Forgetaboutit! So we turned to the next best thing­— grandparents. One set luckily has a pool and a lake cottage, and the other a guilty conscience. “Who can make the sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two?” The Grandparents can!

No camps or grandparents? Cheer up, Charlie. “Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-do. I’ve got another puzzle for you. What do you get when August rolls in? Four kids in school and a mom in heav-en! Welcome back math, homework, reading and tests. Can you remember which is best? Yes, Ma’am! They’re all equally fabulous! La la la la la la la! Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-da. Find a school bus and you will go far. We can live in happiness too.

IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia gears up

IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia has come a long way from its modest beginnings in 2008. event John Leonard, the event director and the founder, said the city of Carmel had a desire to bring people in the Arts & Design District in 2008 so they decided to put on a car show in June.

“It was massively disorganized because we only probably only six or seven weeks to put it together,” Leonard said. “We had 50 cars and I don’t know how many people we had but we didn’t have that many people. But it struck a little bit of a chord. So fast forward seven years, we’ll have 403 cars and probably have 10,000 to 12,000 people that come from (all over the Indianapolis area). We’ll have car exhibitors from as far as Canada, Georgia, Cleveland and Chicago.”

The seventh annual Carmel Artomobilia will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Leonard, 47, said the purpose is to exhibit cars people might not see every day, promote the car hobby and the Arts & Design District.

Leonard, a life-long car enthusiast, grew up in Brownsburg. He lived in Southern California before moving to Carmel in 2001. He has attended the Monterrey (Calif.) Car Week for 24

“Our car show is a beauty contest,” Leonard said. “We’re celebrating the art and design of the automobile. So we put them all together and try to decide which one is the best looking.”

There will be 12 to 15 artists from the Hoosier Salon painting cars in different locations.

Carmel musician Blair Clark and his Fun Factor Band will perform on the main stage next to the Indiana Design Center, starting at 1 p.m. The awards ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m.

Carmel grad hits off-Broadway

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel graduate Kari Baker will be following her dreams by performing in an off-Broadway production of “Beauty and the theater Beast.”

“I will be going on the tour of ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ I’ll be rehearsing in New York City for about two-and-a-half weeks. Then they send us off to 40-some cities, and we perform at all these beautiful venues. It’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait. I’ll start Aug. 24, and I won’t get home until July of next year,” she said.

Baker got into acting because of her love for dancing and singing.

“I’ve been doing it my whole life. I’ve been doing more of the dancing and singing. The acting kind of came along as I really started enjoying musical theatre. As I started doing dance recitals, I realized I could sing, too. Then the acting picked up, and I realized musical theatre is what I really wanted to do,” said Baker.

The 11-month long tour will not bring her back to Indiana, but Baker is excited for the opportunity to pursue her dreams. The audition process lasted almost a year and a half.

She was finishing up another musical, “The

Producers,” when she found out she received the part in the ensemble.

“I’ll be a townsperson and I’ll be a dancer in the number, ‘Be Our Guest.’ I’ll be a napkin.

What’s really is cool is I’ll be covering Belle.

I get to be her understudy. I’ll learn all her lines,” said Baker.

Until the production begins, Baker plans to spend her time in Carmel with her family and learning her lines. Her long-term ambition is to audition for more roles.

“When the show is about over is when I can start auditioning again. In the future, I’d definitely like to audition to be one of the Rockettes,” said Baker.

The 18th Annual Carmel International Arts Festival is very proud to have three Japanese artists bringing their art to Carmel this year.

Keiko Shirasawa, Yumiko festival Ishida and Yuri Nakayama will be helping in the theme of “Educating Our Community in the Arts.”

Each artist has a message for Carmel festival-goers. Keiko Shirasawa stated: “I feel very honored to have been given an opportunity to take part in the International Arts Festival in Carmel … the sister city of where I live. I have been doing calligraphy as a hobby for a long time.”

Yumiko Ishida also commented on her life through art.

“I was born in 1945, the year the World War II was ended. My childhood was in poor environment in both material and economic terms,” she said. “But I think while I was growing in Japanese climate and changing of seasons, flowers, plants, sounds of winds and light enriched my heart and mind. The basis of my creative work is deeply connected to the

natural beauty of changing seasons and traditional Japanese events.”

Yuri Nakayama is the youngest of our traveling artists at 22 years old. She is so excited to be coming and showing her art to Americans.

“I have been doing calligraphy for 15 years and I love it,” she said. “It would be a great opportunity if I could present my work and get acquainted with other people. It will be only for a short period of time, I look forward to it.”

Braised Cabbage with Butter Beans Total Time: Approx. 35 mins Original recipe makes 2 servings Ingredients: 1/2 White Cabbage, 1 teaspoon Fennel Seeds, Pinch Sugar, 1 Garlic Clove, 300 ml Vegetable Stock, 1 Can Chopped Tomatoes, 1 heaped tablespoon Tomato Puree, 1 Can Butter Beans (approx 300g), Large Bunch Fresh Parsley, Salt and Pepper, Spray oil for cooking Directions: Slice one half of the cabbage into 4 even wedges. Heat oil in a large deep frying pan on a medium heat. Once hot, place cabbage wedges into the pan and cook for 3 minutes per side.

Sprinkle sides with the fennel seeds and sugar.

Turn the cabbage wedges back over again and add the crushed garlic clove to the pan for one minute.

Add 300 ml of vegetable stock and cook uncovered for 15 minutes before turning over the cabbage slices again. Add the canned tomatoes, tomato puree, butter beans, chopped parsley, a dash of salt and pepper, and stir. Cook for a further 10 minutes uncovered, stirring occasionally. Garnish with more fresh parsley and serve!

Preparing for the season

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley The summer season is waning and one can observe the fields getting ready for harvest even though the temperatures still soar. If you look at the twilight, you notice it arrives earlier than back in June. Here in August the almanac is already predicting a cold winter. All this means one important thing, summer is almost over and football season is approaching.

How long has it been since you thought of going to a football game? How long has it been since you looked at your tailgating equipment? Well, now it’s time to get ready.

Here are some ideas to get your thinking process started: Get your equipment out of storage and make a checklist to evaluate it for sanitation and serviceability.

Is there something you need to replace or even eliminate?

Check for end of summer bargains. This time of year cookout and camping gear (tailgate equipment) generally goes on seasonending sales.

Buffalo Chicken Salad Sandwiches You’ll have the approval from the under-40 crowd with this spicy chicken salad. Older folks can tone it down by topping the salad with ranch dressing or dip. It’s a big favorite for early-season lunch or dinner.

Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons cooking oil • 1 1/2 pounds cooked chicken, shredded or chopped • 2 stalks celery, chopped • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • Sea Salt and ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 1 tablespoon French’s Worcestershire sauce • 1/4 cup Frank’s Red Hot sauce • 1 cup tomato sauce • 1 cup chicken stock • 8 buns • 8 oz. pkg. Blue Cheese • Dill Pickle Slices Preparation: Heat a large skillet with oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken and celery, onions and garlic, season with salt and black pepper, simmer for eight minutes. In a side bowl combine vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire, hot sauce, tomato sauce and stock.

Pour into the pan and stir to combine. Simmer a few minutes more until the mixture is as thick as you like. Spoon this Buffalo Chicken Salad filling onto buns. Top with blue cheese and pickles if you like.

Bru Burger opens in Carmel

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com Bru Burger, the popular Massachusetts Avenue gourmet burger restaurant, officially opened its Carmel locarestaurants tion on Aug. 10.

A new building was constructed along Old Meridian just south of Main Street on land where the Glass Chimney and Deeter’s once sat. The iconic establishment was partially demolished to make way for the new structure which seats 160 people inside and features outdoor dining on two patios.

Bru Burger has a full bar with beers on tap and high-end liquors. Staff said there are quite a few bourbon aficionados that have already enjoyed the restaurant.

During its opening day, some customers flocked in because they frequented Bru Burger’s other location. Others said they remembered the Glass Chimney and wanted to see what the new place looked like.

The décor is fancier than most burger places but still more casual than an upscale restaurant. There’s a combination of booths, tables and bar stools in between the three rooms with cloth napkins instead of paper.

and “classic burgers and sandwiches,” which is more traditional fare. For the adventurous diners, there’s ingredients such as shaved Brussels sprouts, truffle aioli, herbed goat cheese, horseradish Havarti, eggs, habanero hot sauce, pear-bacon jam, sweet chili mayo, peach compote, carrot-ginger slaw and fetaolive relish. Burgers range from $9 to $12, which is comparable to The Pint Room, another gourmet burger restaurant located nearby on Main Street.

Hours are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with the kitchen closing at 10 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, they stay open until midnight with the kitchen closing at 11 p.m. On Sundays, the hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

It took three years to build and remodel an old house before she opened the Cake Bake Shop, on 6515 Carrollton Ave., in Broad Ripple.

Carmel residents don’t need to go far to get the real thing as Cake Bake products became available at Kroger on 1217 S. Range Line Rd. this summer.

Margo Rozelle, deli/bakery merchandiser for The Kroger Co., came up with the idea.

“As a organization we’re looking to develop relationships with local businesses,” Rozelle said. “I saw an article in the paper and saw something on TV. I went down a couple of times and sampled the product. I went back to the office and everyone said, ‘Oh my God, this stuff is great.’”

She then requested a formal meeting with Rogers and the two hit it off immediately.

“When we first started talking I wasn’t sure if I was just going to put a couple of cakes in there,” Rogers said. “When I got in here,

it was going off the shelves pretty quick so we thought maybe we should throw in some pies, maybe we should do cookies, maybe we should do some brownies and lemon bars. So now we have almost everything we make at the store at Kroger.”

Rozelle said the space for Cake Bake items will be expanded soon. Rozelle also hopes to

include the items in additional Kroger stores in the future. The bakery goods are transported daily by the Cake Bake refrigerated delivery van.

“My bakery never stops,” she said.

Prior to the last few years, Rogers just cooked for her family and friends. So many people took notice that she began to think about turning her passion into a career.

Rogers won the best chocolate cake at the Cake & Bake show in London in 2013.

The 30 contestants were picked from 3,000 applicants.

After she won the contest, she made a cake for Elton John and the band for a concert in Paris.

“They invited me to go backstage and to sit front row center for two nights,” Rogers said.

She will be on six episodes of Simply Good Food TV in England.

The Cake Bake’s Southern Style Caramel Cake is now on the menu at St. Elmo Steak House.

“That’s a big achievement for me because it’s my husband’s favorite restaurant,” she said.

Her Cake Bake box and cupcakes are featured in “Dumb and Dumber To.”

National awards are becoming commonplace for Omni Centre for Public Media.

Omni Centre for Public achievement Media and the City of Carmel won the 2015 Hometown Media Award for Overall Excellence in Government Access Programming from the Alliance for Community Media. It was the third time in four years that Omni has captured the overall general excellence award. The award is based on the 20-minute sampling of all the videos.

The Omni Centre is run by Carmel residents Sandra and Winston Long. Sandra serves as president and Winston as vice president. The award will be presented Aug. 13 in Pasadena, Calif., but the Longs are unable to attend.

“We enjoy producing videos for the city,” Sandra said. “It’s a competition and there are judges around the country who review the videos that have been submitted and they make the decisions and it’s based on points.”

In 2014, Omni captured the Alliance for Community Media Central States award for general excellence, plus 10 awards for top videos. It also captured the national general excellence award in 2012 and 2013.

How to control your cravings Commentary by Cory Black Experiencing strong food cravings that seem near impossible to control? Cravings that are out of control are nutrition typically the result of spiking and subsequently crashing blood sugar levels and will wreck havoc with your diet.

Visitors to Amber (or Amer) Fort, about seven miles from Jaipur, can see the magnificent palace of a sixteenth-century travel maharaja. They can also see how 21st century India is attempting to keep all its citizens employed.

Maharaja Man Singh I was a Hindu who became an important general under Akbar, the religiously tolerant Mughal leader. In 1592, Singh began building Amber Fort as a fortified palace on a hill outside Amber, the capital of the area he ruled. The complex was expanded by his grandson, Jai Singh I, and became the largest fort in India.

Today’s visitors can ride an elephant up the road to the entrance of the sandstone and marble fort. The designs inside combine Hindu and Mughal elements. The mosaic-covered Ganesh Pol, a three-story entrance to the living quarters of the Maharaja and his harem, honors Ganesa, the elephant-headed god of new beginnings. The interior walls of the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) are covered with convex mirrors designed to shimmer in candlelight. An important temple honors Shila Devi, a Hindu goddess.
