Old Town plans neighborhood on site recently eyed by Beazer

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Old Town Companies has submitted plans for a neighborhood on the northeast corner of 136th Street and KeyDEVELOPMENT stone Parkway, a site eyed by Beazer Homes last year.

The Overlook is proposed to have a maximum of 103 single-family homes and 134 multifamily units on nearly 60 undeveloped acres.

The multi-family units would be for-sale townhomes or condominiums in six buildings. Old Town is asking the city for a rezoning from R-1 residential to a planned unit development to accommodate the mixed-use neighborhood.

“The property is a unique piece of real estate. The neighborhood plan developed specifically for this property offers a range of living options while preserving and enhancing the natural features and history of the area,” Justin Moffett of Old Town Companies stated in plans filed with the city.

Beazer Homes withdrew its proposal — which had been majorly revised — in January after remonstrators said they were concerned about lot sizes and other issues. The scaleddown Beazer project would have included less than 120 dwellings, significantly fewer than Old Town’s proposal.

erty and at least 3 acres surrounding it for community park space. It could be used for a neighborhood gathering space, clubhouse, office or other use.

Moffett declined an interview about the project until after he has had time to meet with neighbors of the proposed development.

Carmel’s Technical Advisory Committee is set to review the proposal at its Aug. 15 meeting at City Hall.

City may tighten noise ordinance

At the Aug. 6 meeting, CITY NEWS councilor Laura Campbell said she’d received several complaints from residents about commercial lawn services working in neighborhoods at 8:30 or 9 p.m. After examining the noise ordinance, she

discovered they weren’t violating city code.

“We found it was quite interesting that companies can start as early as 6 a.m. and go as late as 10 p.m.,” Campbell said.

The proposed changes would limit hours for using lawn mowers, leaf blowers and other loud maintenance equipment to between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The council sent the amendments to the Finance, Utilities and Rules Committee for review.

K9 officer dies — The Carmel Police Dept. announced the death of retired K-9 officer Kasey after a short illness. Her partner and caretaker, officer Katy Malloy, was with her. Kasey, 14, had been officer Malloy’s partner for 9 1/2 years when she Kasey retired in June 2016.

Kasey spent all of her remaining days with officer Malloy as a well-loved family member.

$61K transferred to cover lease Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel City Council met Aug. 6 to transfer funds for a lease payment, fill a vacancy on the Carmel Economic Development Commission and more.

What happened: The council approved the transfer of nearly $61,000 from a Mohawk Landing building operations fund to make a lease payment for recent upgrades to the council chambers and common areas in City Hall.

What it means: The city transferred its Mohawk Landing property to the Carmel Redevelopment Commission in June but still had funds left to maintain the property. Because maintaining the property is no longer the city’s responsibility, it transferred nearly $61,000 into an account that will cover the lease payment. The account also will be used to cover two unexpected City Hall projects: $21,000 to repair roof leaks and nearly $40,000 in repairs to the north elevator.

What’s next: The roof repairs are finished, but complications in fixing the elevator have delayed completion of the project.

What happened: The council voted to transfer property at 41 E. City Center Dr. from the City of Carmel to the CRC. What it means: The parcel is adjacent to Mohawk Landing, a city-owned property transferred to the CRC in June. The CRC will likely combine the sites in seeking to redevelop the area.

Mayor shares Home Place vision

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Home Place officially became part of the City of Carmel on March 1, and city officials have been busy since DEVELOPMENT then working behind the scenes with their county counterparts to create a seamless transition plan for services.

Carmel already has begun providing some services, such as trash pickup, stormwater systems and code enforcement.

“We’ve gotten tremendously positive feedback from an awful lot of people in Home Place about the code enforcement efforts. People were putting cars up on blocks and not cutting the grass,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. “There have been quite a few improvements already that people have noticed.”

But those changes might seem minor compared to Brainard’s plans for the area.

In the long-term, he’d like to see several roundabouts installed and new pedestrianfriendly development.

“We’re going to invest a lot in the area to improve property values and walkability,” Brainard said. “I’d like to see College

Brainard said the intersection of 106th Street and College Avenue is a prime spot for a mixed-use development.

The city has been working to form a temporary, state-mandated Home Place Advisory Board to provide input on how excess tax dollars collected from the annexed area should be spent. Brainard doesn’t expect Carmel to have any excess funds, but he plans to use the group as a “sounding board” for plans for the area.

The panel included CCS Supt. Michael Beresford, Carmel Police Dept. Chief Jim Barlow, CPD School Resource Officer Sgt. D.J. Schoeff, Carmel High School Assistant Principal Amy Skeens-Benton, CHS Assistant Principal Karen McDaniel and Tammy Thornbury, CCS assistant director of special services.

Panelists encouraged students and parents to partner with educators and share information about suspicious behavior, advice received from family therapists or problems in the home. Thornbury said parents should not fear judgement and that the stigma surrounding mental illness must be erased.

SROs forge meaningful relationships with students and have met with experts from Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook to gain insight. Visitor management systems are in place, K-9s sweep rooms and 30 metal detectors have been ordered, Beresford said.

Nicki McNally, the mother of four children in the school system, said she would like to see each school have its own SRO and a greater focus on counseling. She believes metal detectors will scare children more than they will be effective. The Noblesville shooting was “a wakeup call,” she said.

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com During a multi-day book fair at Barnes & Noble to raise funds for the Westfield Education Foundation, former EVENT Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy and his wife, Lauren Dungy, will sign copies of their children’s books, “Maria Finds Courage” and “Austin Plays Fair.”

The event will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at Barnes & Noble, 14790 Greyhound Plaza.

“Because of the Colts training camp being here (in Westfield), I thought it would be a great way to kick that off a little bit and at that time, the comment was made that this would be a really good way of getting to put out the message of the Westfield Education Foundation,” said Suzanne Dagley, Barnes & Noble community business development manager. “We decided it would be a wonderful way of not only supporting literacy in children but also a way for them to do outreach about all the great things Westfield Education Foundation does.”

The book fair is from Aug. 17 to 22, which takes place during Barnes & Noble’s Educator Appreciation Days, Aug. 17 to 19.

Phone booth houses library

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Legendary Hoosier author James Alexander Thom doesn’t have a lot of direct ties to Carmel, but he knows MONON TRAIL the city got at least one thing right.

Thom, who lives near Bloomington, was excited to help the city unveil a Little Free Library and reading benches Aug. 13 along the Monon Trail south of the Center Green.

“I like the idea,” said Thom, who is working on an American Indian novel and some children’s books. “Most of my life I’ve sat down to read wherever I was.”

Thom’s novel, “Follow the River,” is prominently featured in the design of one of the two benches. The national bestseller is about a 23-year old mother kidnapped by Shawnee Indians in 1755.

The benches also feature work by other Indiana authors, including Kurt Vonnegut Jr., John Green, Mari Evans, Gene Stratton Porter and James Whitcomb Riley.

The little free library is inside a replica of a London phone booth. Project leaders initially planned to purchase a phone booth from overseas but the cost of shipping and unknown condition of the booth led them to design their own.

“We wanted to make sure it was done correctly,” said Kelli Prader, City of Carmel community relations specialist who spearheaded the project. “By contracting it ourselves we know what we’re getting and we can make some changes.”

The 8-foot tall red phone booth will house book options for children and adults. Users may take a book and return it or another one at their convenience.

Employees at Software Engineering Professionals, which is adjacent to the little free library, will ensure that it is stocked and in good condition. They helped spark the idea for the library and have worked with city officials and the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation to make it a reality.

“I’m really glad that this is going to be part of the community and that everybody has been such a team player,” Prader said.

Carmel runner a fast learner

However, JUNIOR OLYMPICS the 8-year-old Carmel resident has shown quite an aptitude for sprinting.

Despite not competing in meets until earlier this summer, Grilliot finished third in the 100 and 200 meters at the USA Track and Junior Olympics Regional 7 Championships for 8-and-under girls division at Ball State to qualify for the Hershey National Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C. The Mohawk Trails Elementary School third-grader competed in the 100 and 200 meters July 23 to 29 in Greensboro, N.C. “It was fun seeing how good everyone was around the country,” said Grilliot, adding she met a lot of friendly kids.

Grilliot was 52nd out of 60 participants in the 100 meters and 49th out of 58 in the 200.

Cianna Cunningham, from the Fishers Fire team, placed 47th in the 100 and 51st in the 200 at the national meet.

“They are always neck-and-neck (in area meets),” said Karen Grilliot, Alexandra’s mother.

Ferreri’s daughter, Gianna, a Westfield Intermediate School fifth-grader, was the only other Westfield team member to qualify for the National Junior Olympics meet.

Gianna, who competes primarily in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and the long jump, has been competing since age 6 in track and cross country. She also qualified in 2017 for the Junior Olympics meet at the University of Kansas in the 800 meters in the same 9-10 age group. She finished 38th this year.

“I learned there are some super-fast girls out there,” Gianna said of the national meet.

‘A beautiful moment’

Carmel teen’s gold medals a dream come true after suffering horrific injury, setbacks

He watched classes at his parents’ dojo before he could even walk. His first communicative COVER STORY sound was a kiai, the shout used in karate when making an attacking move.

So, it made sense that the first word out of his mouth after a June 2017 skimboarding accident was, “nationals,” a single cry representing a dream that seemed as fractured as his throbbing right leg at the time.

The Carmel resident attended the karate national championship weeks later — on crutches — to cheer on his teammates. He was eager to get back on the mat, unaware that he was only at the beginning of a long and winding road to recovery.

And he was not alone.

Tough times

Caleb and Gabe were thrilled to reach their seemingly unattainable goal of competing at worlds, but for their parents it was a bit nerve wracking.

“I was terrified when we finally went to Scotland, because I was scared to death he was going to have put in all that work (to get back) and not perform in a way that validated his effort,” said Jim Ruiz, Gabe’s father.

But those fears were unfounded. Both boys finished on the medals stand, Caleb winning his first international golds in individual kata and team kumite for his age group, and Gabe winning individual silvers in kata and kumite after a dramatic comeback in one of his fights.

“You’d pay great money to have your son’s confidence built in the way that our son’s was, and we had no idea or guarantee of the outcome,” said Heather, who was able to coach Caleb in one of the events. “To see that happen was a beautiful moment. I cried.”

Caleb was equally shocked. “(Gold) isn’t even what I was shooting for,” he said. “I was just shooting for gold at nationals, and this was worlds, so it was very surprising.”

Now, months removed from the many surgeries, it’s hard to see the trauma that shaped Caleb and Gabe by looking at them. But they’ve both matured through the process and learned some lessons along the way.

“Don’t give up,” Caleb said. “Sometimes you won’t even expect that your goals would be that big. Sometimes you get to your goal and realize it’s way bigger than you thought it was. It’s really surprising when you get there and it’s a lot better than you imagined.”

Like Luke As Caleb Adamson and Gabe Ruiz prepared for the karate world championship, they found inspiration and encouragement from the third member of their team.

Like Caleb, Luke Sartino, 22, has been a student at Adamson’s Karate since he was barely more than a toddler. He’s known Caleb his entire life and has watched him grow from a kid who hung around the dojo into one of his sparring partners.

When Sartino was a freshman at Sartino Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, he injured his knee playing soccer and spent the next two years suffering multiple setbacks and four surgeries on his long, frustrating road to recovery.

Now, the Carmel native is an Olympic hopeful, and his story gave Gabe and Caleb hope as they rehabbed.

“I tried to convey to them that I went through a very similar thing,” Sartino said. “They took that to heart.”

Sartino said it hurt to watch his friends and training partners struggle with being sidelined, but he encouraged them to not rush back to the mat before their bodies were ready. He was thrilled to see them succeed at worlds.

“It was awesome. They totally deserved it,” Sartino said. “I’m lucky I get to train with them several days a week. It’s been fun for me. I feel like I’m helping the new generation while they’re helping me accomplish my goals.”

Augustine Washington was 47 years old when he confronted his fifth child, George — who would grow up to the become the nation’s first president — about the destruction of a prized fruit tree at their property by the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia. The youngster hung his head to say, “I cannot tell a lie, I did it with my little hatchet.” Old dad responded, “Noble boy, I would rather lose a thousand trees than have you tell a lie.” Good point.

Some dispute the veracity of the tale while others are comfortable with the hazy facts because of its virtue as a parable of truth over consequence. Indeed, the elder Washington showed both wisdom and restraint in valuing the lesson beyond the material. How better to teach that “honesty is the best policy” than to remember it when injured?

Still, truth, especially the kind that will bring pain to ourselves or others, is rarely an uncomplicated concept. We hold back to conceal our intentions or to protect the feelings of others. Like a child hiding from her brother his toy that she has broken, can we hope to make truth disappear because we hide it? Or, is it still lurking, only awaiting discovery and release? Might we advance honest expression without the hurt?

Or, should we come to accept that a bit of distress may be the best thing?

Could direct and uncomfortable conversation be the best path to the least unpleasantness? And if so, can we find a way to only say things we mean – not to only say mean things? How can we navigate the truth and manage hurt feelings at the same time? Compassion is not easily defined. Can too much be more hurtful than too little?

I’m questioning my parenting this week.

I allowed my 17-year-old daughter to go to Chicago for a concert. With a friend whose last name I still don’t know HUMOR and who I couldn’t pick out of a lineup. On the Megabus.

Without being totally positive about where she’d be sleeping.

In fairness to me, my high school senior has never given me reason to mistrust her, and she is fairly street savvy. Punctuality and time management, though, are not her strengths, and she tends to go about life just assuming everything will work out, even if she makes no discernible effort to make it so.

For instance, she didn’t buy her bus ticket until two nights before her departure — and only because I asked her if she had made the purchase. As for her overnight accommodations, she considered a recent Snapchat conversation with her teenage cousin confirmation enough that she had a place to stay. The parents had no idea!

And yet, I let her go. As punishment for my lack of maternal caring, I did suffer through one extremely long night of anxiety driven by thoughts of every possible thing that could go wrong, from not being able to park in downtown Indy to becoming a murder victim off Lake Michigan.

Alas, she survived and had an amazing time, despite — or maybe because of — a few interesting moments, including walking into a house at midnight that turned out not to be her uncle’s. And I suppose I learned a good lesson. You have to let your children take risks, even if it makes you feel like a bad parent.

I have valiantly fought the construction around J. Razzo’s restaurant for six years. When I first came to the Meridian corridor, the center was alive and booming. Then (came) the closing of Meridian Street to make U.S. 31 for two years. The bridge on 126th Street was closed for another year, then came all the closings for the roundabouts. The roads have been closed in all directions. Even now there is a roundabout being built.

The worst, though, is that there is no longer an exit ramp on 126th Street in either direction. Customers must exit either before or after 126th Street.

I cannot tell you how many people get lost or frustrated trying to find J.

Razzo’s. I have fought the City of Carmel and INDOT for years and to no avail. My business is down 40 percent from the first two years. After six years of lower sales and permanently losing an exit from the highway, I will have to call it quits.

I’m saddened that my employees will lose their jobs. Some have worked for me for more than 20 years. I respect and love every one of them. My clientele, whom I have known for many years since my early days at Salvatores, will be missed. Through the years we have become friends. I would like to thank them all.

Facebook has received some rough financial reports lately. I’ve endured a few difficult business deals, too HUMOR — like during our garage sale last weekend, when a woman talked me down to 50 cents for a Channel 8 coffee mug. But I realized I had a better day than Mark Zuckerberg by about $70 billion.

One man was asking me questions about an old portable CD player that was marked a lousy dollar.

“Does it work?” he asked.

“Of course, it doesn’t work. It’s a dollar. If it worked, it would be two dollars.”

The most annoying thing was when people whipped around the cul-de-sac, eyeballed our offerings and sped off when disappointed with the selection. Occasionally, someone would shout out what they were searching for: “Got any assault weapons?”

“Any toddler clothing?”

By the way, this was the same person.

Our friends helped us with the sale. Cathy and Bob are experts in getting the highest price for things like an old cable connector, a box of buttons, a back-scratcher, blank

VHS tapes, a dial phone and a six-pack of lawnmower oil. Friends like this don’t come cheap — but the Haversticks are cheap, so they knew exactly what we should charge.

At the end of the weekend, there were three unsold bookshelves. Mary Ellen put an ad on Craigslist saying they were free. Two days later they were still in our driveway.

“Why doesn’t anyone want them?” she asked.

“Who wants something that we’re admitting is worthless? Let’s post an ad saying the shelves are $495 and they can leave us a check under the doormat.”

“Do you think someone will buy them?”

“No, of course not,” I said, “but someone will steal them overnight.”

Bingo. Gone the next morning.

We also still had hundreds of unsold books, which was OK because some of those old favorites would have been tough to part with.

I just wish I had a place to put them.

Riverview Health Westfield Hospital to Host Open House

Construction of Riverview Health Westfield Hospital nears completion.

WESTFIELD—Located at the northeast corner of U.S. Route 31 and state Route 32, the much-anticipated Riverview Health Westfield Hospital will open in September. The new hospital features the area’s first combined ER and urgent care, which means you only have to go to one place when you’re sick or injured, and you will be guided to the level of care you need.

When the project was announced a few years ago, it was originally intended to be an outpatient center. However, after construction began, it was determined that the city of Westfield needed its own hospital.

Westfield and the surrounding areas have experienced tremendous growth, and as the county hospital, Riverview Health wanted to be able to meet the needs of this growing community.

Riverview Health Westfield Hospital will also house an inpatient unit, surgical suites, a drive-thru pharmacy, laboratory and imaging services, an employer clinic, WorkMed and physician offices. The hospital’s first two floors will open in September. The upper floors will open in phases over the next three to four months.

A Letter To Our Community When I was considering taking on the role of president and CEO of Riverview Health, an important deciding factor was feeling connected to the community and the people living in it. Though my family and I were residing in northern Indiana at the time, we lived in Carmel from 1998 to 2002, so I was familiar with the Hamilton County area. Surgical options abound Commentary by Dr. Stefanie Flora When facing surgery to treat a medical condition, patients want a safe procedure that will allow them to return YOUR HEALTH to health quickly. Options include open surgery and minimally invasive surgery.

MIS has been available since the 1980s in the form of laparoscopy and robotic surgery.

It utilizes smaller incisions, which leads to less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and less recovery time than larger incisions needed for open surgery.

Surgeries for bowel cancer, prostate cancer and gynecologic cancer can be done with MIS. More common surgeries such as hernia repair, removing the gall bladder, bariatric surgery and hysterectomy also can be performed using MIS. MIS is preferable for most patients and uses instruments on the ends of sticks that are inserted through incisions less than a centimeter long.

When using laparoscopy, the surgeon has one or two instrument sticks in hand and performs the surgery by moving the instruments directly.

When using robotic surgery, a robot is

used to hold multiple instruments. The robot looks less like a robot described in science fiction novels and more like a friendly metal octopus placed over the patient to hold the instruments. Obesity, previous surgery, scar tissue and unusual organs can increase the risk of a complication during surgery. Robotic surgery and open surgery are sometimes safer options than laparoscopy because both offer better visualization.

Carmel resident and restaurateur Elham Alhassoon owns and will operate the new eatery with her chef husband, Ahmad AlMaaitah. Papa Fattoush will be the couple’s second restaurant. They also own and operate Mediterrano, a Greek and Mediterranean restaurant in Castleton.

“Our restaurant’s name, Fattoush, is a kind of salad that we will serve at the restaurant. The ‘Papa’ in our name is for my husband,” Alhassoon said. “We have three kids, two of them attending Carmel Clay Schools, and the little one will be (attending) next year, so we will have a plan to support their schools.”

Fattoush, a salad made from toasted or fried pieces of flat bread with greens and vegetables, is one of many Greek and Mediterranean staples Papa Fattoush will offer.

Alhassoon said Papa Fattoush is hiring for part-time positions. The restaurant is set to open at 15 East Main Street, Suite 100, before the end of the month. An official opening date has not been announced.

Dance is major attraction at Greek Festival

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Kelly Alexiou has been dancing at Indianapolis Greek Festival since she was 8 years old.

Alexiou, 48, has been director of the Greek Dance Program for the past year for the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

The dance troupes perform each day of the Aug. 24-26 GreekFest at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 3500 W. 106th St., Carmel.

Alexiou, a Fishers resident, has been dancing since the adult program started approximately three years ago. She started teaching when her oldest son, Alex Head, was in fifth grade. She taught both Alex, now 26, and Stephen Head, 23, through high school. She took a break and then returned to teach three years ago.

“We perform at all types of events as long as it is highlighting the Greek culture and community,” Alexiou said.

Alexiou said each group performs between 15 and 20 minutes.

“That leaves time for the members to

dance with it,” she said. “Our church is very much into sharing our Greek culture and heritage with all of the community.

We don’t care what nationality you are or what ethnicity you are. We want everyone to come out and enjoy being Greek for a day. That involves our food and joining us to dance. The majority of Greek dances are dancing in a circle and holding everyone’s hands. The fun thing is that we get to share our culture with the world.”

The troupes are divided by age, kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, middle school, high school and adult.

“It’s fun to see the grandparents dancing with their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren,” said Alexiou, who is an executive assistant to the president and board of directors for Heartland International Film Festival.

“I enjoy learning about my culture and heritage. I find it fun,” Agapios said.

GreekFest President Marika Kalyvas Bagios said an estimated 15,000 people visit during the three-day festival, although it’s

hard to get an exact count because admission is free.

“The money raised goes to the general fund, which supports the various groups and community outreach programs the church is involved with,” Kalyvas Bagios said.

Kalyvas Bagios said there are more bounce houses this year in the children’s Bounce House City area.

More than 560 volunteers participated in 2017 and a similar number is expected this year GreekFest started in 1974.

“Celebration of the Bands” will not be held this year because of construction in downtown Carmel, Indiana Wind Symphony Conductor Charlie Conrad said.

Conrad, who started the two-day “Celebration of the Bands in 2015,” will instead have one free outdoor concert, called “American Dreams,” conducted by the IWS at 7 p.m. on the Center Green in front of The Palladium in Carmel.

The soloist for the concert is jazz clarinetist Shawn Goodman, who will play a new work by Indianapolis composer Ryan Fraley, “Rhapsody on Cue.” Among other pieces will be “American Fanfare” by James Stephenson; “Yosemite Autumn” by Mark Camphouse; “Savannah River Holiday” by Ron Nelson; and Kelly Bennette’s “American Revolution Medley.”

The concert will close with “American Dream” by James Beckel.

“He recently finished a 49-year career as principal trombone of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and is a favorite composer of the Indiana Wind Symphony,” Conrad said.

CCP gets assist for play

Timi is the activity director THEATER of PrimeLife Enrichment in Carmel and is on the board of Carmel Community Players.

“We received a dozen huge garbage sacks of material, a gift from an employee at Eli Lilly, so I contacted three or four of our sewing club ladies and told them my dream was to make aprons for ‘The Kitchen Witches,’ said Timi, a Westfield resident. “They said, ‘Heck, yeah, we’ll help you.’”

Timi, who is the producer for the theater production “The Kitchen Witches,” said the club started designing aprons for the actresses to wear during the show.

“We have more than 50 aprons to sell to support CCP for $5 each,” Timi said. “It’s going to help offset the cost of food we have to buy for these cooking shows.”

The comedy is centered around two feuding hosts of a cable TV cooking show.

Wine cocktails a hit in summer Commentary by Elizabeth Morse Often in the summertime we find ourselves entertaining larger groups of people.

This is a great opportuWINEderlust nity to make your wine fridge work for you.

Wine cocktails enable you to serve budgetfriendly wines in an upscale way. They are also a great way to make fine wine go a bit further.

Instead of making specific wine suggestions, I’m going to give you a few no-fail recipes where you can use what you’ve got or what’s on sale. You’re welcome.

• My favorite ever: Take a champagne flute and drop a cube of sugar in the bottom. Splash a few drops of blood orange bitters over the cube and fill the remainder of the glass with any sparkling wine. Garnish with a twist of lemon.

• This next libation uses any white wine. Super simple. Equal parts of wine, lemonade and cranberry juice.

Mix in a pitcher, serve over ice and top with a splash of ginger ale.

• For red wine lovers, try this one: Three parts of any red and one part 7 Up. Serve over ice and add a few frozen red grapes to fancy things up.

• Last but not least, a Moscato martini. Moscato is so popular these days but pretty sweet. Mixing equal parts of chilled Moscato and icy cold vodka presents a more sophisticated approach. It can also use up that random flavored vodka you’ve been hanging onto. Almost any vodka will work.

Anna’s take: Ocean Prime staff was exceptionally generous and professional. General Manager Willie Nieberger walked my guest and I through a dining experience that began with Ahi Tuna Tartare, shrimp cocktail served over billowing dry ice and cold king crab legs from Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Following the apps, we sampled the Chilean Sea Bass, the 10 oz. filet mignon topped with garlic shrimp scampi and black truffle mac & cheese and broccoli and cauliflower sides served family style. We finished the evening with a 10-layer carrot cake with cream cheese icing and pineapple syrup.

The Ahi Tuna Tartare featured layers of avocado, fried wonton strips, sushi-grade tuna and was topped with a dollop of sour cream and ginger. A ginger ponzu sauce and sesame seeds added an Asian flair, and the crunch of the wontons complemented the tuna and creamy sour cream.

The Chilean Sea Bass is served atop whipped potatoes with a champagne truffle sauce. The delicate, flaky fish was adorned with black truffle slices. As for the filet, it was exceptionally tender and melted in my mouth.

Ocean Prime was one of the finest, most upscale dining experiences I have ever enjoyed. The food paired with the A-1 service was excellent.

Suggested pairings: For the lighter appetizers, pair with a sparkling Veuve Rose (half off on Fridays), a cucumber gimlet or a Sunlight Cream Ale. Pair the filet mignon with a Manhattan garnished with Luxardo cherries or a glass of Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon.

Behind bars: Berries & Bubbles Get it at Ocean Prime, Indianapolis Ingredients: 1.25 oz. Belvedere Citrus, .75 oz. Crème de Cassis, 1.5 oz. sour mix, 1 oz. Domaine Chandon Brut, fresh berries, dry ice Directions: Combine Belvedere Citrus, Crème de Cassis and sour mix in mixing tin. The goal was to create a transitional design for the kitchen and bathrooms while making each space work better for the homeowners’ lifestyle.

1. In the kitchen, the largest transformation came from new white cabinetry and adding more cabinets to fill the space. The cabinets’ height also was extended to the ceiling, which is a visual trick that helps to make the room appear larger.

2. Another change came from replacing the countertops in the kitchen and extending the island, which created more functional countertop space for the homeowner.

3. Convenient storage solutions were incorporated to help keep countertop appliances hidden.

4. Updates were made to the master, guest and powder bathrooms. One of the most dramatic bathroom updates came from removing the tub in the master bathroom to create more space.

Background Info: This early 1990s home is in the Woodgate neighborhood of Carmel. The homeowners love the home but wanted to give it an overall update to help them get more use out of the space they have because they plan to stay in the home for several more years.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original kitchen felt small and there was limited cabinet storage and countertop space. The kitchen also was very dark and lacked design appeal. In addition to the kitchen, several bathrooms never had been updated.

Dummy subjects for dummies

Changing of the guard Commentary by Don Knebel Every hour during the day, guards change in front of an enormous statue of Chiang Kai-Shek in Taipei, Taiwan. Someday soon, the TRAVEL statue itself will change.

Chiang Kai-Shek became chairman of the Republic of China in 1928. In 1949, after his forces were defeated by the Communists, he removed himself and 2 million Chinese to Taiwan, an island 112 miles from the mainland, where he established a government in exile and ruled with an iron fist. He maintained martial law and initiated the “white terror,” in which 140,000 Taiwanese were imprisoned and at least 3,000 executed for suspected opposition to his government. After Chiang Kai-Shek died in 1975, the one-party government constructed a building in his memory at the east end of 60-acre Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Park. The white Memorial Hall is covered by an eight-sided roof, the number eight representing prosperity and good fortune. Eighty-nine steps, representing Chiang Kai-Shek’s age at death, lead to an imposing hall featuring a 32-foot tall bronze statue of the seated ruler.

Beginning in the 1980s, massive demonstrations took place in the park demanding a democratic government. These demonstrations led to the first free elections in 1996, after which Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Park was renamed Liberty Park. Beginning in 2007, Taiwanese citizens began demanding that Chiang Kai-Shek’s statue be removed from Memorial Hall because of his nolonger-acceptable autocratic rule. In 2017, 30 years after the elimination of martial law, the government announced plans to remove the statue and transform the hall into a center for “facing history, recognizing agony, and respecting human rights.”

Public discussions about the transformation are under way, with some people advocating that the building be destroyed. Liberty Park now contains the impressive National Concert Hall and National Theatre. How much longer it will contain Memorial Hall is an open question.

Better: The World Fruit Council has identified 37 varieties of pineapples in the world.

The second example is stronger because it provides a source for the fact about pineapples. Without the authority of someone like the “World Fruit Council” (which I just made up), the sentence feels indefinite.

In the same way that arguing from behind the shield of a screen makes our arguments go nowhere, using dummy subjects makes your writing sound uncertain and wobbly.

Doesn’t it feel good to do battle with someone with whom you don’t agree GRAMMAR GUY behind the safety of a screen? We jump on Twitter on our smartphones to call someone a loser in all caps. We hide inside our anonymous online identities, rapidly re-sharing the outrage du jour. Our TV pundits aren’t even in the same room; they lob talking points like hand grenades at each other via satellite.

Verbal combat over social media and cable news is pointless. Nobody wins.

Today, I want to tackle the dummy subject (also referred to as an artificial or empty subject), which is a verbal construction that weakens your writing, making it seem vague and nebulous. You find yourself using a dummy subject whenever Curtis Honeycutt you use “it” or “there” to start a is a national sentence without referring to the award-winning, noun “it” or “there” represents.
