146th St. development plan generates backlash

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com The Westfield Advisory Plan Commission began its Aug. 5 meeting at City Hall with a statement from WestDEVELOPMENT field Fire Marshal Garry Harling regarding the council chambers’ capacity — which, at the time, was overflowing.

The statement, read by Advisory Plan Commission President Randy Graham, said all attendees must be seated, that entrances and aisles not be blocked and that the nearly 100 people waiting outside could not enter the building unless others inside left.

The room holds 110, and nearly double that many people attended to voice their opinion on a proposed development — The Landings at Village Farms — at the northeastern corner of 146th Street and Oak Ridge Road on the Westfield and Carmel border.

Petitioners Pulte Homes and Mark Zukerman are requesting a change of zoning to allow for more dense housing and commercial buildings on a 58-acre space. The project, if approved, would fill the void in an area entirely surrounded by residential neighborhoods, including Village Farms, Hills and Dales West, Rolling Meadows, Beacon Point, Shadow Lakes, Hunters Creek Village and Westfield Farms, among others, in addition to Our Lady of Mount Carmel church and school.

If the petition is approved by the Westfield City Council, the land would change from single-family, low-density zoning to single-family, high-density and local business district zoning, something many residents don’t want, which they made clear during the public hearing.

The 94 proposed homes would be built on 41 acres, along with two detention ponds and other amenities. The commercial portion would comprise 11 acres facing 146th Street on the southern portion of the 58-acre area. Just north of the commercial area is an approximately 6-acre utility easement.

(zoning) allows for businesses (like) a drugstore, day care, medical office, coffee shop or other personal service uses, more in line with areas that serve residents surrounding the site.”

Dobosiewicz said the purchase price for the ranch-style and two-story homes would range from $325,000 to $360,000, with a minimum of 1,600 square feet and 2,300 square feet, respectively.

Dobosiewicz said the price point is lower than the homes in Village Farms.

“As a point of reference, we looked and determined through a broker that homes in Village Farms over the last two years, the average sale price for homes within Village Farms was $367,000,” he said. “That’s based upon data received from sales over the past two years.”

Regarding amenities, The Landings proposal includes several that Dobosiewicz said

are in line with the city’s unified development ordinance and include a pocket park, a large park with open space, walking trails, a canoe/ kayak launch and trail connectivity.

Before the start of the public hearing, a stack of comment cards with names of those wishing to voice opinions on the project numbered more than 50.

Erma Clark, a Village Farms resident, said she is concerned about pedestrian and traffic safety, but also wants to see the area remain undeveloped.

“I am right across the street from this development,” she said. “I have a daughter and son-in-law and two granddaughters who live in Village Farms. I am against any development in that area for several reasons: water displacement, increased traffic, increased crime, not to mention a utility easement that’s in an environmentally sensitive area.

Not every square foot of farmland should be developed.”

Many residents said they understood the open land would someday be developed but that they have concerns about the need for commercial buildings in the neighborhood.

Doug Evans, a 20-year Village Farms resident, said he is against rezoning.

“We have so much vacant real estate within a mile,” Evans said. “It’s empty building after empty building.”

Village Farms resident Troy Yoder said he took it upon himself to look into commercial spaces already open in the area.

“I drove the route from over by LA Fitness to Clay Terrace up to Target over to Walmart, and there are 17 open commercial sites in less than a mile from this location,” Yoder said.

Other residents said the density simply doesn’t match the homes surrounding the area. Taking into account space for amenities, detention ponds and open space, the plan would put two or three homes on each acre of residential development.

Because the item was presented for the public hearing, the APC did not vote to send a recommendation to the city council, which will give final approval on the rezoning request. The APC will vote on a recommendation at its next meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Westfield City Hall, 130 Penn St. For more or to see an agenda, visit westfield.in.gov.

Heirbrandt siblings celebrate National Twins Day

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Each year, the Heirbrandt family celebrates National Twins Day. On Aug. 3, National Twins FAMILY Day celebrated the bond between fraternal and identical twins. National Twins Day started in 1976 in the town of Twinsburg, Ohio, where the town conducted its first Twins Festival.

Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt, a Westfield resident, is a twin to Mike, who lives in Cicero.

“Growing up a twin was so fun,” Mark said.

“You always had a best friend to play with.

It’s been cool to see the closeness and unique nuances that come with being a twin.”

Mark said being a twin also has been an asset on the campaign trail.

“When I was running for re-election in 2016, Westfield and Fishers had a debate the same night,” he said. “So, I was panicking. I literally picked my phone up, called my brother and asked if there was any chance he could go there, tell people he was my brother and answer questions on my behalf.

It really freaked everybody out because they couldn’t believe how much he was like

me, even our mannerisms and voices.”

But the siblings’ similarities also can be confusing, especially in public.

“I’ve been slapped because of him in one case,” Mark said. “And my brother’s been in an elevator and someone thanked him for a drainage project, and he had to apologize and say, ‘I’m sorry, you must think I’m my brother.’ So, I’m used to answering to Mike, and he’s used to answering to Mark.”

There are many theories on the occurrences of multiples in families, from skipping generations to whether maternal or paternal genetics come into play during gestation. But Mark said his family defies all theories. The occurrence of twins and mul-

tiples is very common in his family.

Mark’s sons, Ethan and Evan, are twins, and Mike’s sons, Chase, Tim and Joel, are triplets.

Mark said he knows of two other instances of twins in his extended family.

“My mother’s mother, which was my grandmother, had brothers that were identical twins, and their names were Ennis and Willis,” he said. “Also on my mom’s side, she had cousins that were identical twins. How odd is that to have that many sets of twins in our family?

“I talk to my twin brother three or four times a day. I don’t know how to explain it.

It’s a bond that is so unique.”

Carmel OKs $64K to update Westfield’s welcome sign

A totem sign that has puzzled some drivers near the Carmel and Westfield border soon should make a little CITY NEWS more sense.

The Carmel Board of Public Works on Aug. 7 approved $64,125 to change the north face of the sign along U.S. 31 near 146th Street to read “Carmel” instead of “Westfield,” which currently is on the north and south sides of the totem.

Many southbound drivers questioned why the sign appeared to welcome them to Westfield as they were entering Carmel. In late 2018, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said he discussed the issue with Westfield Mayor Andy Cook and that Westfield officials were open to changing the sign if Carmel paid for it.

The City of Westfield spent nearly $300,000 on the totem, which was installed in late 2018. The sign is within Carmel city limits on land owned by INDOT, which gave permission to Westfield to place the sign there. Previously, Westfield officials said they let Carmel officials know before construction that the sign would say Westfield

on the north and south sides, but Carmel officials said they were only aware of the city name on the south side.

The $64,125 will cover fabrication and installation of the new panels, which are illuminated at night. Indianapolis-based Signworks, which designed and built the totem, estimates the project will take eight to 12 weeks for fabrication once Carmel approves the final plans.

The totem was a result of a two-year initiative in Westfield to create a welcome sign to greet drivers along U.S. 31. It is made of Corten steel with a natural patina to make it appear rustic.

Exchange visit unites students

“It’s been nice to get a OPERATION larger world view,” BurFRIENDSHIP roughs said.

The 2019 Carmel High School graduate’s family hosted two students from Yalta in the Crimean Peninsula for three weeks in July. Burroughs had been to Sweden in the summer of 2018 as part of the program.

“When I went to Sweden, I got to experience how they live,” he said. “Hosting, you learn something from them and they learn how we live here.”

The family of Patrick Hoen, a Westfield High School sophomore, hosted two students.

“It’s fun to be around them and learn

about the culture,” Hoen said. “They both loved New York. They talked about how their country is a lot more strict.”

This was Yalta resident Masha Alipatova’s first trip to the U.S. “It was (an) amazing experience,” Alipatova said. “It was my dream to come to the United States since my childhood.”

Tykhon Novichenko, from the Crimea, said everyone was very friendly. He said he especially enjoyed seeing the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Kristina Riley, a Fishers resident whose children were previously involved in the program, is chapter chair for the Indy North chapter of Operation Friendship.

“It’s a two-year commitment,” Riley said.

“The kids that join have to join in a hosting year.”

Don’t forget to water trees Commentary by Daren Mindham The Carmel Forestry Program wants to encourage you to water your trees during a dry summer. It is essential URBAN that your street trees are FORESTRY watered during dry periods, especially those trees planted in the last few years. Newly planted trees do not have the extensive root systems that mature trees have developed over time, so they struggle more for a drink during hot summer days.

Watering trees is easy to do. If your trees have been recently mulched, it is crucial that the mulch be positioned like a berm around the tree to create a basin for watering. “Volcano-shaped” mulch promotes wa-

ter runoff instead of allowing water to soak toward the roots. If the trees have not been mulched recently, be sure to water enough to soak the roots thoroughly and as far out as the tree crown.

Trees should be watered at least twice a week during dry periods so the soil is moist at least 4 to 6 inches deep. If you have irrigation in these areas, make sure the settings are specifically set to water deep enough for trees.

Citizens urged to join solar co-op

By Renee Larr news@currentincarmel.com Hamilton County residents are invited to join the Hamilton County Solar Co-op to help the environment and ENVIRONMENT save money. A series of public information sessions about solar energy and the co-op process will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Hamilton East Public Library in Fishers, 5 Municipal Dr. The solar co-op is offered through Solar United Neighbors of Indiana in partnership with local nonprofits Carmel Green Initiative and Westfield Green Together, with support from the cites of Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield and the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners and Solarize Indiana.

“This is an opportunity for homeowners and businesses across Hamilton County to come together to leverage their purchasing power to get a great deal on solar,” said Zach Schalk, Indiana program director for SUN. “Residents will also benefit from our support through the process of deciding whether going solar is right for them.”

Going solar can be expensive. But when neighbors join a co-op, services can be offered at a lower cost.

“We find that people are really interested in solar but they don’t know where to start,” Schalk said. “The benefits of the solar co-op are that you’re getting a great deal because you’re part of this large group and you’ll also have non-biased support from your peers. Plus, you’ll have SUN and Solarize Indiana to answer questions about becoming a solar homeowner.”

Meet Odle: Prevail’s service dog and busiest employee

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com For more than seven years, one advocate at Prevail has had a special connection to thousands who use the NONPROFIT services of the Noblesvillebased nonprofit that aims to empower victims of crime and abuse.

Odle is a 9-year-old Labradoodle and golden doodle mix who spends his days comforting primarily children who are victims of crime or abuse.

Odle’s handler, Brittany Winebar, Prevail’s youth advocacy supervisor, has been with him since the beginning. Together, they work with kids from age 4.

“We support (kids) who experience all types of crime and abuse, just like all of our adult services,” Winebar said. “We served a little over 900 youth (in 2018), and what is typically true about our youth programming is that they stay in services longer, and they utilize more variety of services.

We provide crisis intervention services for them, so we might meet them at the hospital or at our child advocacy center or might assist their legal parent or guardian in filing a protective order. On a more ongoing end, we might go through the court or judicial process with them.

“We also facilitate group programming for them. We do that on-site here, but we also, for our high school and middle schoolers, have support groups in the schools.”

In 2018, Odle sat in on 1,087 individual appointments and more than 500 support groups.

“Odle is our busiest advocate,” Winebar said. “When we look at numbers he sees and interacts with the most people.”

Odle is a full-service dog who works with people from all walks of life.

“He has public-access rights for the purpose of work, so he goes to the school or to the prosecutor’s office or a child advocacy center, if that is needed or requested,” Winebar said. “A typical day for him is sitting in on individual appointments, and he’s also going to at least one or two groups each day. He’s very intelligent and likes to be engaged.”

Odle lives with Winebar, so his schedule typically is her schedule. Odle turns 10 in November. The first 2-1/2 years of his life were spent training through the Indiana Canine Assistance Network and becoming certified through Assistance Dogs International before becoming an advocate at Prevail in March 2012.

“He knows about 30 different commands and has been taught American Sign Language for those commands because we have a number of clients who are hearing impaired,” Winebar said. “ We call (his commands) behaviors, but the kids think they’re tricks because it’s fun to watch him turn the lights on and off. Either way, they have a multitude of purposes.”

Winebar said Odle is often seen as a mascot by kids, which encourages them to return to Prevail.

“Sometimes, it’s easier to talk about Odle’s dog family than it is to talk about what’s going on in their family,” Winebar said. “He’s a great projection tool.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over — The Hamilton County Traffic Safety Partnership will join approximately 230 law-enforcement agencies across the state in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization. From midAugust through Labor Day, police will work overtime to arrest impaired drivers. Drivers should expect to see increased sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols.

School bus stop safety — The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office received $5,000 from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute for increased traffic enforcement at school bus stops. The institute awarded approximately $380,000 to 39 agencies for overtime school bus stop enforcement over the next two months.

Civil War Roundtable — John Summerlot from Indiana University in Bloomington will be the featured speaker at the Sept. 11 meeting of the Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable. Field hockey comes to county

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Growing up in Chicago, Caroline Lafferty took an early liking to field hockey.

Lafferty played in third RECREATION and fourth grade before the family moved to Carmel. She was disappointed when she heard there wasn’t a good option at the time to play field hockey in Indiana. So when Lafferty learned about the Crossroads Field Hockey Club, she eagerly joined.

“It’s really fun to do because of the teamwork,” the Clay Middle School seventh-grader said. “I like how there are different levels of skills you can use and air dribbling.”

Lafferty’s mother, Jill, said it will be cool to watch the sport develop in Indiana.

“As field hockey develops here in our state, the kids can just have fun and learn together, without a ton of pressure,” Jill said.

Ava Durso, now a Westfield Middle School seventh-grader, learned about the possibility of playing field hockey through Audra Heilman, her fifth-grade math teacher at Westfield Intermediate School.

“I like how you can be a little rough but not too rough with it,” Durso said.

Heilman, a Noblesville resident who grew up in Easton, Pa., played field hockey at Indiana University along with Indianapolis residents Gaby Olshemski and Danielle McNally. When they all settled in the Indianapolis area, they formed the club.

“Field hockey and sports led me to become a teacher, so I’m hoping to teach some of the skills I have and help the community even more,” said Heilman, a twotime All-American for the Hoosiers.

Their mission is to grow the sport of field hockey in Indiana.

“We are the first club team in the state,” Heilman said.

The Southeastern Program of Recreation Team Sports, better kown as S.P.O.R.T.S, in Fishers, is offering registration for a field hockey recreation league for 12-under and 16-under teams this fall.

Olshemski said approximately 35 girls have been part of the program at one point.

“The hardest part is getting people to show up, because they don’t know what the sport is,” Olshemski said. “I went to an Indianapolis school and they didn’t know what it was, so I should them a video of an Olympic game.”

Olshemski said she is hoping the Carmel Dads’ Club and Westfield Youth Sports Association might add leagues in the future.

Another coach on the team is Molly McCue, a Zionsville resident and seventh-grade teacher at The Orchard School. McCue played at Denison University. Former IU player Karen Lorite also serves as a coach.

Registration is open for the recreation leagues at hsesports.org. Scott Spillman, S.P.O.R.T.S. executive director, said the first two years, the league has been permitted to accept players from outside of Fishers to help grow the sport.

Is your head in the cloud?

Commentary by Feras Mash Some people always thought the cloud is just this white “thing” in the sky that provides shade, precipitation or a TECH beautiful sight to see.

But then came technology and its “cloud.” That changed the perception a bit and confused us all. So, what is the cloud and why should you care about it?

In a nutshell, the cloud is a vast network of servers and computers that have unique functionality and purpose to serve mankind with tasks such as streaming videos, delivering email, providing software services or social media, among other functions. So, instead of accessing files and data from a local computer, you’re accessing them online from any internet-capable device, and information is available anywhere you go and anytime you need it.

The cloud has many variations, such as public, private and hybrid, but they all do almost the same thing: Deliver information when needed. The cloud is controlled and delivered by conglomerate cloud-computing providers such as Google, Amazon and Apple.

So, why should you care about the cloud?

Well, you really don’t since you’re probably already using the cloud for your email, which was the first cloud application that ran on the internet. You just access the tools you need such as email, Facebook, YouTube and whatever you want and use out of the box without knowing or caring it is being run through the cloud. This approach saves consumers and businesses money and resources, allows for multidevice support, provides easy file and data sharing and accessibility with massive storage space.

If one had to do what the cloud does on a massive scale, he or she would have to spend millions of dollars. Instead, we pay $19.95 for a subscription and get all we want or need without forking out a fortune.

So, the cloud is cool and it’s here to stay.

Traveling with technology Commentary by Eric Anderson My family has at least 12 devices we travel with every year. iPhones and iPads and laptops — oh my!

SCIENTIFICALLY As the IT director for S P E A K I N G the family, it is important to maintain an army of support devices when we drive, fly and stay in hotels. Whether you are reading books, playing Fortnite or watching Netflix, make sure to prepare before you hit the road. Here are the basics: • Power strip — Power strips and surge protectors allow families to charge six to 12 devices at the same time. These are great in hotel rooms and airports where power outlets are not always plentiful. They also protect devices from sudden surges of electricity. Order one with at least 12 ports and an 8-foot cord.

• Charging blocks — These power bricks hold extra juice for laptops, cellphones and tablets. Ranging in size from a tube of lipstick to a small paperback book, they can charge multiple devices at the same time. Keep them fully charged before you travel for maxi-

mum efficiency. Mophie cases charge phones and act as a case to protect cellphones.

• Phone holder — Several states don’t allow drivers to hold their cellphones while driving (and it’s dangerous).

MPow and Belkin make holders that mount to the dash, connect to outlets and sit in cup holders. Proper positioning keeps drivers eyes where they need to be: on the road.

• Headphones — Headphones keep my family from disturbing other passengers on the plane and in the car. Noise canceling and Bluetooth options need to be charged. The Apple AirPods give users four to five hours of use and can be put back in their case to recharge.

Keeping your briefcase, purse or laptop case filled with a few extras will make you look like a technology hero to your children and spouse. It also will help maintain sanity during long trips.

Woman travels around the world to meet 2 siblings after shocking DNA test results

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Sandie Lee said she often felt lonely growing up.

Adopted by her parents as an infant, she said they tended to be overprotective of their only child as they raised her in a small British COVER STORY town in the 1950s.

As a teen, she became more curious about her birth family after stumbling across a document listing her birth mother’s name, but she didn’t attempt to obtain her original birth certificate until years later after moving to Australia and later New Zealand. As it turns out, British law makes that extremely difficult to do long-distance for people adopted before 1978.

But then she had another idea. In 2018, she took a DNA test, hoping to find a cousin or distant relative who could help her learn more about her family roots.

The results revealed something she never expected.

“I burst into tears. I just couldn’t believe it,” Lee, 68, said of the results. “All weekend I was in a daze because I thought I’ve been by myself all this time and I have a sister. And when I contacted (her), she said, ‘You have another sister!’”

‘It worked out perfect’

Only two months before, Carmel resident Debra Valiyi took the DNA test to learn about her ancestry.

She was surprised to discover that she was only 53 percent British, but a much bigger shock was in store.

Weeks later, she received an email from Lee stat-

ing the DNA test showed they were sisters. Valiyi alerted her older sister, Dorica Robinson, who was just as shocked by the news. “(The first time I saw) the photograph she sent of Sandie I cried, because she looks like my mum,” said Robinson, 62, who still lives in her birthplace of Leicester, England.

The sisters set up a time to video chat and felt an instant bond. Lee and Robinson wore the same peach shirt from the same retailer, even though Lee was in New Zealand and Robinson was in England, which experience opposite seasons.

They discovered other similarities as they got to know each other, including that Lee and Robinson had both named their oldest daughters Rebecca and that Lee and Valiyi had been through divorces. They all remember fond visits to Swiss Cottage, a Leicester café where they enjoyed cherry pie, and wonder if they ever ran into each other there.

Lee was born in Blackpool, 140 miles away from Leicester, but the adoption agency placed her with a family in Leicester, where her birth parents eventually relocated and is the birthplace of Robinson and Valiyi. The girls grew up approximately 4 miles away from each other, and Lee attended school with one of her cousins, although they had no idea at the time they were related.

Valiyi, 60, said she wishes she could’ve known Lee growing up, but she is thankful to have had the support of an older sister in the past year.

“It worked out perfect for me. I was just going through a divorce, and Sandie has been through a divorce,” Valiyi said. “She knew what I was going to go through because she’d already been there.”

3 sisters, 3 continents

As the sisters forged emotional bonds, they began planning a trip to meet in person.

It wasn’t easy.

“It’s frustrating that there are three of us and we’re all on different continents,” Robinson said.

Eventually, the sisters decided to visit Vailyi’s house because she has the most space to host guests. Robinson and Lee flew into Chicago’s O’Hare airport minutes apart Aug. 4. Valiyi first connected with Robinson, whom she hadn’t seen since their mother’s funeral in 2014. It wasn’t long before they finally met Lee, who, once again, inadvertently wore a jacket nearly identical to Robinson’s.

“Those two laughed, and I burst into tears,” Lee said of the first meeting.

LETTER Suffering from solastalgia

Sure, it is nice to have a friend who can get access to hot concert tickets before they go on sale. And it can be good to know someone with a strong Rolodex when it is time to get a private telephone number of someone who is particularly difficult to reach. But the best kind of connected people are basically those who link with others, not in a particularly spectacular or leveraged way, but in genuine interest and mutual friendship.

They may not be two degrees away from the pope or the president. Yet, they take an interest in our lives. They know that we’ve had a bit of a cold lately. They know that we like chocolate ice cream but not strawberry. And they answer the phone whenever we call.

They care. They have “connected” their lives to ours. They invest in the petty nuances that make each of us unique. Even the best among us only has so much of this quality to go around, so we have to watch its distribution. We keep jealous guard over what we share and what we ask, knowing that time is perhaps the most finite of all resources.

These attachments seem minor, even inconsequential, until crisis, or change, or life, brings into focus the isolation that confronts us in the world alone. Families often matter little, until they are gone. Friends may have little use, until we find ourselves celebrating life alone. Colleagues and intellectual mates are superfluous, until we discover our ideas unchallenged.

Isn’t it these connections that hold us together rather than hold us back? In an age of such polarization, tribalism and name-calling, our impulse is to disconnect. It’s understandable, but at what cost?

Reflections on self-reflection Commentary by Danielle Wilson Friends, I have returned. My grand adventure in Southeast Asia was a success, and even more important, it taught me a few things about myself. Here’s HUMOR what I learned: I have trouble going with the flow. This wasn’t exactly a revelation (just ask my husband Doo), but it reaffirmed the fact that I occasionally have a hard time summoning personal flexibility when plans go awry. A canceled flight, a suspicious taxi ride and a stolen wallet left me strung out on adrenaline and panic-induced paralysis.

To my credit, I didn’t completely melt down, but in retrospect, I certainly didn’t handle my mini-crises with aplomb.

I don’t need a man. Doo joined me for the first part of the trip, but I was solo for the last 12 days. I walked the streets of large cities at night, alone; managed to order food at restaurants, by myself, where English was not spoken; and exchanged money,

organized tours and stayed at questionable hotels, all without a guy by my side. I didn’t necessarily like being solo (seeing a dog carcass on a butcher’s block is a sharable moment), but I proved that I can. Girl power!

I like small luxuries. I’m quite capable of traveling on a budget and fully understand that outside the U.S., things are exactly the same except entirely different. But abiding by the “Please don’t flush toilet paper of any kind down the pot” rule for almost three weeks is exhausting and disgusting and helped me to realize how often I take our modern American conveniences for granted.

Also, democracy. I definitely have a new appreciation for democracy.

Editor, Solastalgia is a word that describes the distress caused by environmental change.

Change can mean the loss of nature that we attach emotions or identity to. It can mean uncertainty, despair or powerlessness.

Farmers who rely on steady rains experience solastalgia during droughts. It can be the feeling of despair associated with climate change. The lament you feel from the loss of a beautiful tree or prairie that you enjoyed on the way to work is solastalgia.

It is the loss of the beautiful fall colors of ash trees due to their extinction. Put another way, if nostalgia is the distress associated with being away from home, then solastalgia is the distress when our natural home is leaving us.

Those with a deeper connection to the land will feel this more intensely, like me.

But as areas of nature disappear, or evidence of people working with the land is lost, the more likely a community will lose its grounding, literally. That’s why words like solastalgia are needed, to help us grieve the loss of home.

What’s in a name?

No way Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My brother, Peter, lives in New York.

When he visits us, I’d love to take him to a popular local golf range in FishHUMOR ers, where I know he’d have fun driving golf balls onto giant dart boards. But I can’t take him there. I’ll explain why, keeping in mind this is a family newspaper.

My friends Bob and Cathy gave me a gift certificate to this place for my last birthday and I was eager to try it out. I invited my son to join me there on Tuesday evening for dinner and a chance to practice our hooks and slices.

The hostess guided us to an enclosed area with a café table next to a golf tee looking out on the range. Here, you can dine and whine about your golf shots. We registered as new members at a computer kiosk.

Brett and I both signed in, then we took a couple of iron shots. Soon, it was time to order our dinner. But as soon as we opened our menus, the server approached us.

“Mr. Wolfsie,” she said, “the manager would like to talk to you.”

The manager approached and quietly asked if I was Mr. Wolfsie. I said “Yes,” with a smile, assuming he recognized me from TV. Truth is, he had no clue who I was.

He said, “I am going to have to ask you to re-register using a different first name. This is a family friendly business and we like to ensure a wholesome environment. The registration form does not accept any profanity or vulgarities (author’s note: This story is 100 percent true.)

I signed in again, this time as Richard Wolfsie, although I considered trying other names, just to see how many times I could be censored by a software program. Remember, my name is printed at the top of this column every week. I hope you’re not offended. If so, thanks for not reporting me.

Doctor honored for work, service

By Maria Cook news@currentincarmel.com Dr. Jeffrey Greenberg of Carmel is a man of many accomplishments. He has been an orthopedic surgeon ACHIEVEMENT at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center in Indianapolis since 1993.

During that time, Greenberg has published a textbook and served as an associate editor for the Journal of Hand Surgery.

For 12 years, he was the director of the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center’s Hand Fellowship Program, and he has taught at various institutions around the world. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Greenberg also performs charity work through medical missions.

Recently, Greenberg added another accomplishment to his resume when he received the Grinnell College Alumni Award during the college’s 140th Alumni Reunion Weekend. Grinnell College is a private liberal arts university in Grinnell, Iowa.

Before earning his master’s degree in human anatomy from Ohio State University and his medical degree from George Washington University, Greenberg graduated with honors from Grinnell College, with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1980.

Greenberg has dedicated a large part of his life to helping others. His medical missions have taken him to places within the U.S., such as the Chinle Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona, and abroad, such as India, Guatemala and Honduras. Greenberg provides help to underserved populations in areas where accessing medical care, particularly surgical care, can be difficult for financial and logistical reasons.

“The primary reason for the medical missions to those countries was for Dr. Greenberg to perform hand surgeries,” Lacher said.

Greenberg did not respond to requests for comment.

Anthony’s to celebrate 1 year

By Desiree Williams news@currentincarmel.com Anthony Lazzara ventured into restaurant ownership for the first time Aug. 13, 2018, when he opened Anthony’s Chophouse, a 12,000-square-foot ANNIVERSARY steak and seafood restaurant.

He may only be celebrating his first year of owning a restaurant, but he spent a lifetime learning the industry. Anthony’s father, Chuck Lazzara, launched Ritz Charles and his uncle, Joe Lazzara, owns Joe’s Butcher Shop on Main Street.

“It’s always just been a passion of mine since I was younger to be in the food industry,” said Anthony Lazzara, a Carmel resident.

Anthony’s Chophouse opened as the centerpiece of Monon and Main, a family driven project that began in 2008 when the Lazzara family acquired the property. Monon and Main is a $20 million development that includes retail and office space, townhomes and an outdoor entertainment space.

“We thought it’s what Carmel really needed, something upscale and elegant for the Arts & Design District that it was lacking,” he said.

Lazzara said he wants to be innovative by growing the wine list and adjusting the menu to market demand. He also plans to strengthen the bond with the community through outreach and collaboration with the city.

GreekFest celebrates culture and Orthodox faith

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com GreekFest always has a dual purpose.

“Fun is definitely part of it, but we would love for everyone to FESTIVAL learn about Greek culture and our Orthodox faith,” GreekFest President Christopher Lafter said. “Going back to the first festival in 1973, it’s been our goal to welcome our friends, family and the central Indiana community into the Holy Trinity community to share our culture and faith.”

The 46th annual Indy GreekFest will run Aug. 23 to 25 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3500 W. 106th St., Carmel. Holy Trinity held its first service on Christmas Eve 2008 and held its first GreekFest in 2009. Before 2009, Greekfest was held elsewhere.

“We want (visitors) to enjoy the food, the music and have a good time,” Lafter said. “It’s a lot of work but a lot of fun because everybody always enjoys sharing our food and our faith with the visitors.”

Lafter had been in charge of the festival’s Grecian grills for several years before becoming president this year.

Lafter, an Indianapolis resident, said the festival is, for the first time, partnering with the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis because it has an Ancient Greece exhibit. The Children’s Museum is a sponsor and is providing activities for the children’s booth.

As customary, several dance troupes of varying ages will perform traditional Greek dances throughout the day. However, a new feature is the young adult group will offer Greek dancing lessons between performances.

“We’re going to have people throughout the grounds dressed in traditional Greek clothing,” Lafter said. “There will be people in togas and ancient Greece warriors.”

Lafter said organizers have scaled down food options, eliminating grills that produced souvlaki (a kabob). “(The grills) took up a lot of space and wasn’t one of the top items,” Lafter said.

“It’s on hold. If there is a lot of demand for it, maybe we’ll bring it back next year. We still have the favorites and we’ve added

Festival proceeds go to the church for

various missions, Lafter said.

Lafter estimates the average combined attendance for the three-day festival is 12,000 to 15,000.

Lehman to showcase work at Carmel Arts Festival

ARTIST Lehman is a longtime featured artist at the Carmel International Arts Festival, which is set for Sept.

“It’s always a good show for us and we enjoy our local clients,” Lehman said. “We get a lot of repeat customers. It’s always been very beneficial. I can’t imagine going a year without doing this show.”

Lehman will have 30 square feet of wall space in his light-domed tent.

“Having the right tent has always been very important for us,” Lehman said. “Making sure, rain or shine, we are always going to be in business.”

Lehman said he brings anywhere from 20 to 35 pieces, depending on their size.

“I do illustrated surrealism,” Lehman said.

“A lot of people say it looks like it walked out of a movie. It’s very character heavy.

These are humanoid characters I’ve created.

There is not a lot of earth involved in my pieces. It’s predominantly clouds.”

Lehman, who had previously lived in Noblesville for several years, works from his home studio in Nineveh.

Lehman, 42, and his wife, Jamie, selfpublished a book, “Splat/Kitty Calamity.”

Jamie did the writing and Lehman did the illustrating. Shelby County Reads awarded it Book of the Year.

“We toured all the elementary schools and had a lot of fun doing it,” Lehman said.

“It’s very slapstick and fun. My wife is a poet and she does sing-song rhymes. She does so many short poems that aren’t big enough to make into a book.”

The couple is now working on a textbooksize art book called “Paper Airplanes.” Each page has a poem.

Lehman bought 75 16-inch by 20-inch canvases for the book’s artwork.

“I have one continuous sky for the entire book,” Lehman said. “I’m shutting down all commissions and I’m just working on the book. Each piece is a real-deal painting, which can stand alone and sell as a painting instead of an illustration.”

The couple is in contact with publishers.

The book’s release is tentatively set for June 2020. The launch will be on the thirdfloor gallery at Saks Fifth Avenue at The Fashion Mall at Keystone in Indianapolis.

CYT show gets IndyFringe spot

“This show has been a MUSICAL blast to put together because it is such a small cast. It’s a new experience to get closer with my fellow castmates and directors while bringing everyone back to their childhoods,” Westfield High School junior Ellye Tibbets said.

Christian Youth Theater is presenting “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Fringe Edition” for IndyFringe Festival Aug. 15 to 25. The show is based on the Emmy-winning Saturday morning educational cartoon series.

The 10-student cast includes five Carmel residents, Christian Baltz, Grace Kubek, Natalie Kern, Lillian Williams and Kate Smith.

Other members include Abigail Drake, Westfield; Hannah Doran, Zionsville; Bridget Tuttle, Indianapolis; and Trey Weger, Fishers.

Baltz said he watched the show when he was younger.

“My dad has the DVD boxed set and my brother and I used to watch them in the car,” Baltz said.

Pearce to join Aldean on tour

“It’s been the craziest year CONCERT because I’m juggling a lot of different things. I’ve been on tour 95 percent of my life. I’m planning a wedding, I’m finishing an album and getting married,” said Pearce, who is marrying fellow country singer Michael Ray later this year.

Pearce is one of the opening performers for Jason Aldean’s “Ride All Night Tour,” which includes Kane Brown. The tour stops at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center in Noblesville at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 23.

“Jason is super sweet and very welcoming,” Pearce said. “I don’t feel like I could be on a bigger tour. Jason is at the top of his game, and honestly, Kane Brown is a headlining act in his own right.”

Pearce was greeted by a bouquet of flowers from Aldean before the start of the tour.

“It’s nice to get a nod from Jason that he feels I’m the right artist to open his show,” she said. “It makes his fans aware of me and pay attention to me probably more than they would elsewhere. I feel very lucky to

ADVERTISEMENT / NOTICE TO BIDDERS CITY OF CARMEL, INDIANA Waste Water Treatment Secondary Expansion Sealed Bids for the City of Carmel, Indiana, Waste Water Treatment Secondary Expansion, will be received by the City of Carmel, Indiana, (“Owner”) at the office of the Clerk Treasurer in City Hall, One Civic Square, Carmel, Indiana 46032, until 10:00 a.m., local time, on September 4, 2019. Any Bid received after the designated time will be returned to the Bidder unopened. The Bids will be publicly opened and read by the Board of Public Works and Safety at 10:00 a.m. on September 4, 2019 in Council Chambers at City Hall.

The Bid should be clearly marked “BID ENCLOSED Waste Water Treatment Secondary Expansion, Contract 100 “ on the outside of the envelope, and as otherwise set forth in the Bid Documents.

All prime contractors, subcontractors, small, minority or women owned enterprises and other interested parties are invited to attend.

Bids must be submitted on the forms found in the Bid package, must contain the names of every person or company interested therein, and shall be accompanied by: (1) Revised Form No. 96 as prescribed by the Indiana Board of Account and as required in the Instruction to Bidders, including a financial statement, a statement of experience, a proposed plan or plans for performing the Work and the equipment the Bidder has available for the performance of the Work; (2) Bid Bond in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the total Bid amount, including alternates with a satisfactory corporate surety or by a certified check on a solvent bank in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the amount of the Bid. The Bid Bond or certified check shall be evidence of good faith that the successful Bidder will execute within fifteen (15) calendar days from the acceptance of the Bid, the Agreement as included in the Bidding Documents. The Bid Bond or certified check shall be made payable to the Owner.

Any Bid may be withdrawn prior to the scheduled closing time for receipt of Bids, but no bidder shall withdraw his Bid within ninety (90) days after the actual opening of the Bids.

All Bid Bonds and certified checks of unsuccessful bidders will be returned by the Owner upon selection of the successful Bidder and execution of the Agreement, and provision of the required Performance Bond and Payment Bond.

Award will be made to the low, responsive, responsible bidder. The low, responsive, responsible bidder must not be debarred, suspended, or otherwise be excluded from or ineligible for participation in federally assisted programs under Executive Order 12549.

The successful Contractor will be required to enroll in and verify the work eligibility status of all employees hired after the date of this Contract through the E-Verify program. The Contractor will also be required to sign an affidavit concerning employment of unauthorized aliens. A copy of the affidavit is included in the Bid Documents. The successful Contractor will also be required to sign a certification regarding no investment activities in Iran.

A Performance Bond with a good and sufficient surety, acceptable to the Owner and Engineer, shall be required of the successful Bidder in an amount equal to at least one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price, conditioned upon the faithful performance of the Agreement.

The Contractor shall execute a Payment Bond to the Owner, approved by Owner and Engineer and for the benefit of the Owner, in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price. The Payment Bond is binding on the Contractor, their subcontractor, and their successors and assigns for the payment of all indebtedness to a person for labor and services performed, material furnished, or services rendered. The Payment Bond must state that it is for the benefit of the subcontractors, laborers, material suppliers, and those performing services. The surety of the Payment Bond may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

All out-of-state corporations must have a certificate of authority to do business in the State of Indiana.

Application forms may be obtained by contacting the Secretary of State, State of Indiana, Statehouse, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204. Wage rates on the project shall not be less than the federal Davis Bacon Wage scale published by the U.S. Department of Labor the Friday before the Bid Opening date.

Bidders on this work shall be required to comply with the provisions of the President’s Executive Order No. 11246, as amended. The Bidders shall also comply with the requirements of 41 CFR Part 60 – 4 entitled Construction Contractors - Affirmative Action Requirements. A copy of 41 CFR Part 60 – 4 may be found in the Supplemental General Conditions of the Contract Documents and Specifications.

The Bidders attention is also called to the “Minority/Women Business Participation” requirements contained in the Project Specifications. Contract procurement is subject to the federal regulations contained in the OMB Circular A-102, Sections B and O and the State of Indiana requirements contained in IC-36-1-9 and IC-36-1-12.

The Owner reserves the right to reject and/or cancel any and all Bids, solicitations and/or offers in whole or in part as specified in the solicitation when it is not in the best interests of the governmental body as determined by the purchasing agency in accordance with IC 5-22-18-2. The Owner also reserves the right to waive irregularities in any Bid, and to accept any Bid which is deemed most favorable to the Owner.

Glance at Sydney Harbour Bridge Commentary by Don Knebel The Sydney Harbour Bridge stands alongside the famed Opera House as symbols of Sydney, Australia. Residents TRAVEL once doubted that the bridge, dubbed the Coat Hanger for its shape, was safe. Now, they can climb it lawfully.

Sydney began as an English prison colony on the south side of Sydney Harbour in an area called the Rocks. In 1815, an English architect sent to Sydney for forgery proposed a bridge connecting the Rocks to the north shore of the harbor. Nothing came of that or similar proposals floated during the next 100 years. At the end of World War I, the government of New South Wales approved building a bridge across the harbor using a so-called “through arch” design inspired

by New York City’s Hell Gate Bridge. In such a design, abutments at the bases of the lower arches support the entire weight of the bridge, but local residents were skeptical that such a design would be safe. To gain public confidence, the builders added four concrete and granite pylons atop the

abutments, whose only function was ornamental. Before the bridge opened in 1932, 96 steam locomotives stood-end-to-end on the bridge’s four railroad tracks to confirm its structural integrity. The bridge now carries 160,000 vehicles a day on its eight traffic lanes.

The apex of the bridge is 440 feet above the water of Sydney Harbour. That height, combined with the design of the bridge, provided an irresistible, but illegal, temptation to daredevils wanting to demonstrate their climbing skills and prove their bravery.

Authorities responded in 1998 by offering the world’s first supervised bridge-climbing experience. The three-hour climb to the top and back has become popular among tourists and residents alike. Four thousand marriage proposals have occurred at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, along with many weddings.

Does it matter which ladder?

Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Do you want to work your way from the mailroom to the corner office? I’ll give you some swell advice that’ll have you drinking gold-leafed martinis quicker than you can say “Scrooge McDuck doing the backGRAMMAR GUY stroke in a roomful of golden coins.”

First thing’s first: We need to clear up the common confusion between latter, ladder and later.

A ladder is a thing your leaf butler climbs to clean out your gutters. It’s a tool with a series of horizontal bars called “rungs” that extend upward on affixed, parallel, vertical poles. I assume you understand this, so it’s time to move on.

Latter and later are a bit more confusing. Not only are the two words one “t” apart in spelling, but their meanings are similar enough to make this pair bewildering to many.

“Later” is an adverb that means “after, or subsequent to, the present time.” For example: I planted some marigold seeds in my window planter box. A few weeks later, I had bright orange flowers blooming.

Latter is an adjective that means “happening at or toward the end of an activity.” It also indicates the second of two things or people that were previously mentioned.

Given the option between a Nickelback CD or a puppy, all of your co-workers would prefer the latter as a birthday present. Don’t be the lady who gives Nickelback CDs to people for their birthdays; instead, be the puppy-giving co-worker.

Furthermore, don’t show up to a meeting later than the posted time. Instead, get there five minutes early. Bosses appreciate promptness, which is a sign of respect for their time.

When it comes to climbing the corporate ladder, these tips can get you far toward your goal. In addition, having good grammar will make you more popular than the lady who gives out hypoallergenic birthday puppies.

ORDINANCE D-2473-19 AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL, INDIANA, AMENDING SCHEDULE B AS CODIFIED IN CITY CODE SECTION 8-121 Synopsis: Ordinance amends and replaces existing Schedule B: Automated Traffic Signals.

WHEREAS, the City of Carmel, Indiana, is authorized to regulate traffic by means of traffic control signals pursuant to Indiana Code § 9-21-1-3, WHEREAS, automated traffic signals are listed on “Schedule B,” as codified in City Code Section 8-121; and WHEREAS, upon the recommendation of the City Engineer, the Common Council now desires to amend and update Schedule B of City Code Section 8-121.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED, by the Common Council of the City of Carmel, Indiana, as follows: Section 1. The foregoing Recitals are fully incorporated herein by this reference.

Section 2. Schedule B, as codified in City Code Section 8-121 should be and the same is hereby to read as set forth in attached Exhibit A, which is incorporated herein in its entirety by this reference.
