Synagogue aims to strengthen bonds after vandalism

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com When Corey Freedman became president of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla five weeks ago, he had a goal of building FAITH bridges with the local interfaith community.

The Carmel conservative Jewish congregation already has made great strides toward that goal, although not in a way anyone would have predicted or welcomed. More than 1,000 people representing various faiths and walks of life packed into the synagogue for a solidarity gathering July 30 to show their support two days after Nazi symbols were discovered spray-painted on a dumpster enclosure behind the building.

“I want stronger bonds with all of our community, and I want it to be a two-way street,” Freedman said. “Last night what I saw from the interfaith community, from everyone being absolutely willing to step up and say, ‘This ain’t going to happen,’ I think is the kind of support in general we’re going to have for building solid relationships.”

Speakers and attendees included synagogue officials, leaders from other religious communities and politicians. Freedman said event planners anticipated anywhere from 50 to 200 guests and were amazed by the response. Other organizations had offered shuttle buses and help directing traffic, and both were useful in managing the standingroom-only crowd.

‘This wasn’t just vandalism’ Synagogue officials learned of the graffiti July 28 after a neighbor noticed it while mowing a lawn adjacent to Congregation Shaarey Tefilla. They contacted the Carmel Police Dept., which has been working with the FBI to investigate the incident.

Freedman said the act was caught on a security camera on the building that points toward the dumpster enclosure. A CPD spokesman declined to provide additional details to avoid compromising the investigation.

Freedman said this is the first time the congregation has been targeted since it moved to W. 116th Street approximately 12 years ago. He said it experienced vandalism to a lesser extent at a previous building approximately 20 years ago.

Indiana is one of only five states without a hate crimes law, and on July 30 Gov. Eric Holcomb said he wants lawmakers to address the issue in the next legislative session.

Freedman said he would support a new law — if it’s “done well and thoughtfully.”

the graffiti at the synagogue. “I support the hate crime law in the sense that it really addresses hate, and this was intended to be a hate message.”

Stronger together After learning of the graffiti, Freedman said Congregation Shaarey Tefilla and other Jewish leaders met to decide how to address the issue, questioning whether they should minimize the situation or use it as a way to bring the community together.

They chose the latter, as evidenced by the large solidarity gathering. Officials will soon meet to determine next steps to help congregation members heal and continue connecting with the broader interfaith community.

Freedman said that may include hosting an interfaith Seder, an idea that had been in the works before the vandalism.

For now, Freedman said his congregation has embraced the encouragement of supporters he didn’t even know they had.

Hotel approved near VFW

In 2017, Witness Investment announced plans to build a Home 2 Suites hotel at 12845 Old Meridian St., directly in front of the VFW building. Initially, VFW members expressed concerns that the post would be hidden behind the new building and that it would not have sufficient parking lot space for events.

But at a Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals meeting in June, both sides said they had reached an acceptable plan.

“In the spirit of compromise, (the developers) have proven themselves to be very good neighbors by listening and responding to the concerns of our VFW post members,” said Marla Ailor, lifetime auxiliary member of the Carmel VFW. “We feel they have presented a plan that considers our shared parking lot conundrum, our lack of visibility, our drainage problems and event space issues.”

The Carmel Plan Commission approved the site plan and design for the new hotel at its July meeting. The developers agreed to maintain the parking area, drainage, combined trash facilities and other common areas. They also will design and construct a monument sign and flag presentation to increase visibility for the VFW. The five-story, 88-room hotel will include an indoor pool, fitness area, meeting room, breakfast area and exterior patio along Old Meridian Street on nearly 2 acres. Alex Beatty, an attorney representing Witness Investment, said the building will be smaller than a typical extended-stay hotel to allow for enough parking spaces for Home 2 Suites and the VFW.

CHS coach seriously injured

He fell headfirst into the sea floor when a wave crashed into him, breaking three vertebrae in his back and neck.

Supporters have started a GoFundMe page to help cover his medical bills, as Sweeney it’s unclear if his insurance will cover care outside of the U.S. He was ex-

pected to be medically evacuated by air Aug. 2 from the Dominican Republic to Ft. Lauderdale, which alone was estimated to cost $22,000.

According to the GoFundMe page, Sweeney is experiencing numbness and tingling in his right arm and hand but otherwise has full movement.

Refugee family receives home

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Sharifa, a widow with six children, came to the United States 15 years ago as a refugee from a Middle Eastern nation.

On Aug. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 1, her hard work and determination earned her keys to a Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County home in the Home Place neighborhood of Carmel.

Because Sharifa still has relatives in the Middle East who could face repercussions, she and her family requested to use only first names, to not reveal her country of origin and not have any pictures taken.

“My mom has honestly gone through events that most people couldn’t handle for the most part,” said Izzy, Sharifa’s 25-yearold son. “She’s Wonder Woman to me. Other people look up to superheroes or some millionaire. For me, it’s always been my mom.

And for my siblings, it’s the same way.

She’s very hardworking and determined. We came from nothing (in the Middle East) and got lucky enough to get into this refugee program to the U.S. We went through some tough times. We got robbed our first year at an apartment (in Indianapolis), so she started twice. She worked two jobs, raising six kids by herself.”

Two of Izzy’s younger sisters and a younger brother will live with their mother in the home. The youngest children are 18-year-old twins.

Izzy and his mother went to Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County a few years ago and began volunteering.

“Habitat has given us an amazing opportunity,” Izzy said. “My mom has never really owned a home in her life. She was able to help build it up with a tremendous team.”

Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County Executive Director Jason Haney said Sharifa had been at the same job for 15 years.

“It’s a very deserving family,” Haney said.

“She did 250 hours of sweat equity and another 50 hours of homeowner education.

Her kids volunteered as well.”

Carmel resident creates arcade show

The Carmel resident is the host and director of “Big Wins!

Arcade Show,” which can be seen on ComTELEVISION cast Midwest, the biggest of Comcast’s four regions, Newell said. The show, in its second season, airs from Michigan to Arkansas on various channels. In Indianapolis, it’s on CN81. The show is available on YouTube as well.

Newell, 36, is joined by Andy Lang, Indianapolis, who owns All Productions.

“Andy and I go to an arcade and try to win the coolest prize there for a reasonable amount of money,” Newell said. “So, the audience, usually young kids, get to watch us spend a lot of money at the arcade and win jackpots.”

Newell said the show was inspired by a popular YouTuber who uses the name Matt3756 who would go to Dave & Buster’s to play video games and play the claw machine at the grocery store.

Newell said they give the prizes to viewers at the end of the year.

Newell and Lang went to Pittsburgh to shoot an episode with Matt3756.

“When he goes to the arcade, kids run up to him,” Newell said. “He’s one of the biggest YouTube gamers. He has sponsors.”

It was tough to stay under budget for that show, so we transitioned that show after two seasons to the ‘Arcade Show.’

National Night Out — National Night Out is a designated evening when communities across the nation come together to take a stand against crime. Baker creates thousands of Poppy & Sweetpea’s custom cookies from Carmel home

The smell of sugar cookies wafts through his home all day. Sanders built a commercial kitchen in his home and launched Poppy & Sweetpea’s Cookies in 2013.

The Carmel resident is working on a book about how to build a commercial kitchen in the home and will teach a workshop on the topic at Cookie Con, a gathering of cookie artists, in September in Indianapolis.

Sanders started decorating cookies when he was 5 years old, and his love for baking grew from his family’s annual Christmas cookie breakfast tradition. He said each Christmas his family baked more than 25 kinds of homemade cookies and candies and delivered them to friends and family.

His family has continued the tradition of the Christmas cookie breakfast, and they also make opera fudge together on a marble slab that has been in his family for more than 50 years.

“I just want to make sure that I build these memories with my grandchildren,” Sanders said. “To me, cookies are about memories and traditions and really bringing family together.”

His grandchildren call him Poppy. Sweetpea is the nickname for his youngest daughter. His customers now call him Poppy, too.

CUSTOM CREATIONS

Through the years, Sanders has learned a variety of techniques, including stenciling and airbrushing, and he enjoys using a wet-on-wet technique to decorate the cookies.

Sanders owns more than 1,000 cookie cutters. He handcrafts those he needs that he doesn’t have in his woodshop. Some of his most unusual cookie cutters include a snail, a flying squirrel and all of the major Washington, D.C. monuments. His bakery also includes a drawer filled with more than 80 dyes and a special printer that allows him to put edible photographs onto cookies.

“This is my man cave,” he said. “There’s so much more to making cookies than people realize.”

Sanders said he can bake 500 cookies in less than three hours and spends approximately three to five minutes decorating each one. He said he spends 30-plus hours a week filling orders in his home bakery.

“The house always smells like cookies,” he said.

‘I GO FOR THE SMILE’

Sanders makes everything from scratch with fresh ingredients. He said he doesn’t like week-old cookies and runs his business like an old-fashioned bakery.

One customer used a heart-shaped Poppy & Sweetpea’s

cookie to propose to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. The cookie helped make the gesture extra sweet, and she said yes.

Sanders said he loves the challenge of decorating a complex cookie. Poppy & Sweetpea’s Cookies specializes in decorating cookies for unique and celebratory events, such as baby showers, graduations and holidays. Sanders said he studied studio art in college and has always been an artist.

“We’re all about making the best cookie possible for people to enjoy,” he said.

Sanders loves being able to deliver fresh-baked goods, which he said is what he enjoys most about the business.

“I go for the smile,” Sanders said. “That’s what I live for.”

Carmel resident Jennifer Beckman has made several orders for birthdays, Christmas parties and special events.

Beckman said the cookies look like a work of art and that the maple danish rolls are mouthwatering.

“Not only are they beautiful, but they’re absolutely delicious,” Beckman said.

Sanders has received orders from around the world, including India and Japan. He said he visited Amsterdam a few years ago and visited more than 50 bakeries.

Outside of his home, Sanders often hears people say they smell sugar cookies when they’re around him.

“I’m just having a whole lot of fun with it,” he said.

Sanders hosts workshops from his home bakery, which include sessions on how to make spritz, press cookies and decorate sugar cookies.

Fincerdoodle657 claims near omnipotent insight into world affairs. Likewise, Catlovesdog4528 knows the movement patterns of extraterrestrials across North America. Even more, BossaNovaHomer has mastered the irony of casting aspersions on someone for casting aspersions. Unidentified and unsolicited “comments” have proliferated on the digital streets of the modern media machine. With each internet article or blog post come countless retorts from those unwilling to put their actual names alongside their many opinions.

To wit, they push civil space to be anything but civil. In reaction, some good-intentioned, if a tad overzealous, among us are cutting free speech to the quick in an effort to put up some guardrails. Zero tolerance policies and expression laws of all sorts, marked by Byzantine rules and hopelessly inconsistent enforcement, leaves a chill over public discourse. Still, the intentionally disruptive manage to anonymously dump toxic waste into our public space without repercussion. The sewers of this internet overflow with secret and mislabeled opinion and diatribe of every sort.

Comedienne Roseanne Barr and pro athlete Colin Kaepernick stepped into the spotlight to publicly express their points of view, each for vastly different reasons. And to each, the world delivered a consequence.

Yet, their acts were undeniably their own.

Some 239 years ago, the founders of this nation chose likewise to sign their real names — many in bold, large letters — to a document demanding independence from, and incurring the wrath of, the world’s mightiest military power. In so doing, they took stunning risk and helped inspire countless others. Can Fincerdoodle657 do the same?

Summer colds are the worst. All I want to do is lie in bed wallowing in Netflix, Sudafed and self pity, but the stupid sunshine keeps mocking me: “It’s beautiful outHUMOR side! Come play! Or at least cut the grass!” Ugh. On a side note, I’m pretty sure my husband Doo infected me on purpose. He was sick last week and had to work while I slept late and wasted the day on Facebook, feeling absolutely fine. I know the irony of it drove him crazy. Had the tables been turned, I probably would have done the same thing, but I’m still aggravated.

At first, I tried to deny my illness, blaming the sneezing and watery eyes on allergies (never mind that I don’t have allergies, except a recent one to avocados, which I’m vehemently protesting). The next day the runny nose set up camp in my sinuses, and by the third morning, I was experiencing full-on headache and fatigue. I knew I was in bad shape when I tried to order photos at the nearby pharmacy, where I’d also pick up ginger ale and more drugs (I pride myself on efficiency, even in dark times).

I live within 2 miles of three different CVS stores, so when the cashier told me I was at the wrong place, I chalked it up to oversight. When the second store was also a no-go, I pulled up my email confirmation for the manager. She said, “You want East 126th. This is West 116th.” Jeeze-Louise, I wasn’t even on the right side of town! My 10-minute errand became a highly inefficient 45. In gorgeous weather.

We’re proud of our community, and haven’t we felt immune to the kind of cowardly act of hate that, yes, recently happened right here, at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla? Without a hate crimes law, no community is protected from such acts. Not our churches, not our public spaces.

Let’s be clear: This is not simple vandalism. The Nazi symbols are a public affront.

They poison all of us. But thanks to our current legislature, Indiana is one of only five states without legislation that ad-

dresses such acts of savagery.

Mike Delph, our current senator, has repeatedly opposed hate crime legislation. This is the year to elect representatives that will balance the Statehouse and break the hold of our single-party leadership, the party that has blocked protective hate crime legislation.

Carmel neighbors, I am supporting J.D. Ford, a new voice for inclusive legislation, to replace Mike Delph and bring a fresh, smart, young voice to the Statehouse. Let’s make our votes count in November.

READERS’ VIEWS Folks at Firestone go above and beyond Editor, I just want to give a shout-out to the awesome staff at Firestone Tires on Range Line Road. They’ve been servicing my vehicle the past four years, and not only have they met my car’s needs, but they’ve also exceeded my expectations in the “caring, pleasant genuineness” department.

The staff has expressed interest and taken note of what road trips I’m embarking on (as this influences what level of service I may need), and they always greet me with a smile and are willing to take the time to explain exactly what they are doing and why.

Their patience with my type-A personality and multiple questions is to be commended.

They’ve shown me that they are trustworthy, which can’t be said of all auto shops.

When I was in for an oil change last weekend, it was around the lunch hour and I hadn’t taken the time to eat anything that day due to a hectic schedule and multiple commitments. I was sitting in the waiting area with a book while the staff finished their work on my car, and then out of the blue, a few of the guys offered to share their lunch that they had ordered in. It was a simple gesture, but it meant so much to me. I could tell my blood sugar was low and being able to eat was exactly what I needed. So, they not only took care of my car that day, but they also took care of me! I really appreciated it.

Trump donation somewhat misleading Editor, In a recent issue of Current in Carmel, in a letter to the editor, a community member wanted recognition for Trump’s donation of his salary to charity. However, I found this donation to be somewhat misleading.

Before Trump became president, he had loads of money. He was one of the richest men in America. What was failed to be mentioned was the donation of millions of dollars during Obama’s presidency.

I’ll admit (first lady) Melania’s staff is lower than that of Michelle Obama. Another thing that is correct was the media’s portrayal of Trump and its lack of showing decent things Trump does. What the media does show (although many times falsley) is an ounce of truth. An ounce of truth that

(scares) a majority of Americans. (“The View” co-host) Sunny Hostin said it perfectly that if a man cannot stay loyal to his wife, how is he supposed to stay loyal to America? The fact that he spends time, as president of the United States, tweeting about “fake news” and Jimmy Fallon shows why the media does portray him as a villain.

His portrayal is a showing of all the fear Americans have, and until we can be assured that our president cares about each and every one of us (regardless of race, religion, gender, sexuality, etc.) and that he will fix our problems and gain the reassurance that we will be all right, that is when we will start showing recognition and support of President Trump.

“What is this?” Mary Ellen asked me as she dangled a doodad in front of my face. It was small, plastic and had an HUMOR odd shape. “It looks like it goes to something,” she said. “Do you know what?”

“No clue,” I said.

“Put it somewhere. It looks important.”

“So, you want me to keep it because we don’t know what it is for?” I asked.

“Exactly.”

“But if we did know what it was for, we’d also keep it. So, I guess we keep everything.”

She said, “Don’t be silly ­— some things don’t go to anything. We can throw those things away. We should only keep things that look important.”

I stared at the thingamajig Mary Ellen unearthed. I was certain nothing in our house required anything quite like that. But there is only one way to be sure it was not important: Throw it away.

I had a small window of opportunity left to retrieve it, if necessary. It would be two days before the trash was picked up, enough time to rescue the thing when

I realized I had thrown away something important.

I heard the familiar sound of the garbage truck on Friday. Whatever that thing was, it was now gone forever. Just a matter of time before I found out what it was for. In fact, it was the very next day.

“Dick, I need that thingie I found last week. It’s the hook that attaches to the vacuum to wrap the cord around. Where is it?”

“At the city dump.”

“You threw that away? Didn’t you know it went to something?”

“Yes, I knew it went to something. I just didn’t know what it went to. So, I threw it away. That’s how you find out.”

Later that day, I removed my desk drawer and emptied the entire contents: wooden knobs, old keys, pen caps, dozens of multicolored plastic parts, metal gizmos and a rubber whatchamacallit. I threw them all out. Within days, I would know what each thing was for.

Again, all this is legal and by the book.

Carmel A is a model of municipal government. Carmel B is a model of discriminatory ineptitude on steroids. Carmel A is reality, B is utopian. A informs, B hides. A serves, B manipulates.

One example: Financial data for the Center for the Performing Arts — a private, nonprofit corporation shielded by legal shell devices — is only available via the Guidestar website which reports nonprofit data so donors aren’t bilked too badly. The Center’s most recent filing covers 2016 — 18 months old and counting (Booth Tarkington Theatre’s latest is 2015).

Even ancient history can be instructive.

The filing notes $615,000 in fundraising expenses and $261,523 in fundraising event income. Sophisticated financing, eh?

I understand the need for secrecy in government when national defense is at stake.

In the two Carmels, who is the enemy? The embarrassing truth? Unreported deficit spending and subsidies for special groups?

Taste of Hope to benefit ACS on Aug. 11

By Desiree Williams • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel Against Cancer holds a special place in Lyndsey Furry’s heart, not only because she is a member of the organizing committee but also because she is a cancer survivor.

In 2005, during her senior year of FUNDRAISER high school, Furry was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma after discovering a lump in her right armpit. After surgery and seven rounds of chemotherapy, she remains cancer-free 12 years later.

Since then, Furry and her husband, Eric, have been active in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Ball State University and in Carmel. Furry also participated in Putnam County’s Relay for Life with her brother and grandfather.

“It’s been a great opportunity to meet other people that have the same experiences and values that we do,” she said. “I’ve met several other cancer survivors and other caregivers and other people who have been touched by cancer. It’s really good for the healing process. It provides you with a means to feel like you’re doing something to fight back against the disease.”

Carmel Against Cancer, which replaced Carmel’s Relay for Life last year, is similar to Relay for Life and still benefits the American Cancer Society but provides the opportunity for more frequent events.

“Part of the reason why we wanted to change the name is because we want the focus to not be on just one event,” Furry said. “We want to encourage people to feel like they

can have a lot of little events throughout the year.”

Eric Furry said changing the name was an important step to increase the organization’s exposure and its impact on the community. Carmel Against Cancer hosted Night of Hope in June and will host its inaugural Taste of Hope from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 11 in the Arts & Design District.

Taste of Hope offers guests a food passport for $15, which gives them access to individual samples from restaurants like Burgerhaus, Fat Dan’s Deli and more. There will be live music as well as beer, wine and cocktails available for purchase.

Furry said her goal is to donate $2,500 to ACS by selling every ticket. Tickets are available at eventbrite.com.

Jill Petruzzi’s original goal was to raise $100,000 for the Indiana chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year campaign.

“I was blown away ACHIEVEMENT by the generosity of others. I nearly doubled my goal,” said Petruzzi, who earned the Indianapolis Woman of the Year crown by raising $198,000. “I was a proud peacock, and then when they announced what (Rob Chinsky) raised, I was like, ‘Womp, womp.’”

Chinsky raised $516,000, breaking what had been Petruzzi the previous national record of $489,417 set in 2016 by Amanda Bush, Jeb Bush’s daughter-in-law. The Indiana Chapter held off announcing the results to the public, hoping Chinsky would be named National Man of the Year as well as winning the Indianapolis title. He ended up raising the third-most nationally this year, as two others topped the previous record. The national results were announced in July.

Chinsky and Petruzzi are Carmel residents.

Petruzzi campaigned in memory of her father, Jim Fischer, a Geist resident who lost his 29-month battle with large diffuse B-cell lymphoma at age 76 in March 2017, and her son Eric Petruzzi, 20, who died in a car accident in November 2016.

“The slogan for my campaign is, ‘Together we can triumph over tragedy,’” Petruzzi said. “I had a wonderful picture of Eric and my dad. I didn’t want to do this. LLS has asked me for years to run this and I said no thank you. I was at a leadership meeting at LLS, the day before (my father) would have been 77, and I leaned over to my friend Jason Llewellyn and said, ‘I feel I have to do

this.’”

Petruzzi said the campaign put purpose to her pain.

“I have a grief counselor who told me grief can either make you better or bitter.

By God it’s going to make me better,” Petruzzi said.

The fundraising period spanned 10 weeks, ending May 19 with a banquet.

“It was a full-time commitment for me, because I was all in,” Chinsky said. “I made it a full-time job. My ice hockey teammates, Tom McCord and Mark Barnhart, created an annual hockey tournament in 2013 to support the candidate striving to raise Chinsky the most money.”

McCord, a runner-up for 2013 Man of the Year, is an acute myeloid leukemia survivor.

Chinsky is the fourth man in a row with hockey ties to win the LLS title.

Chinsky dedicated it to several people, including his best friend and fellow ice hockey player Talbott Sumners of Zionsville, who died of brain cancer in December 2016.

Chinsky’s mother, Marlene, has chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which makes her tired and weak.

“The hockey tournament was a big fundraiser for us (raising approximately $5,000),” said Chinsky, who owns 17 Penn Station East Coast restaurant franchises, including the one in Carmel. “I did a golf outing that raised money. We did a curling event.”

Team Chinsky sold 28 tables of 10 for the banquet.

“From those 280 people, we raised $83,000 that night,” he said. “I raised more than $20,000 in the auction.”

Chinsky’s wife, Linda, son Josh, 21, and daughter Jess, 20, helped with the fundraising.

Carmel-based telecommunications company Telamon is expanding its global reach.

Telamon launched its EuroGROWTH pean location in Skopji, Macedonia, in April. The company expects to have 500 employees at the new office by the end of the year and anticipates anually manufacturing more than 5 million harnesses for passenger safety applications, like seat belts and airbags, and eventually expects to manufacture 25 million harnesses annually after expansion.

Chief Administrative Officer Stephanie Fuhrmann said the expansion to Europe enables the company to decrease lead time, transit time and transportation costs.

“Telamon’s mission is to simplify business by increasing efficiency and streamlining operations for our customers,” Fuhrmann said. “Macedonia accomplishes exactly that in the European market.”

Thanks to an acquisition in 2014, Telamon entered the Passive Safety Wire Harness market. Since then, Telamon has doubled its share of the North American Automotive Passive Safety Market from 10 percent to 20 percent and tripled its number of employees from 400 to 1,200. Its products are used in

Anthony’s Chophouse to feature original Glass Chimney bar

Many visitors to Anthony’s Chophouse will feel a touch of nostalgia.

The new Carmel resRESTAURANT taurant, which opens this month, will feature the Glass Chimney room, whose centerpiece is a mahogany bar. The room pays homage to the upscale Carmel restaurant, which closed in 2008 after 32 years.

Chuck Lazzara The building, 201 W. Main St., is owned by Chuck Lazzara, co-owner of Ritz Charles. The restaurant is owned by his son, Tony Lazzara, and wife, Kayla.

“We had this vision Tony Lazzara probably six years ago to say wouldn’t it be nice if it had a little Carmel history in the restaurant,” Chuck Lazzara said. “Then we heard Bru Burger was going to tear down Glass Chimney.

We thought wouldn’t it be great to incorporate this bar into our restaurant downtown.”

Chuck Lazzara and his son met with the owner, Mike Cunningham, in 2014 to ask if they could buy the mahogany bar. Cunningham agreed because he didn’t have plans to use it.

“We thought we should try to save the bar for Carmel history,” Tony said. “It was more about dad going there and knowing about the bar and service. I think I had only gone in there once. I knew it was a cool bar everyone remembered, but I didn’t have a vision of it yet until I saw it. It’s beautiful and is tied into the design of the entire building.”

So, they had the bar taken apart by a master carpenter and moved it. Tony estimated it was around 100 pieces. The parts were stored in relatives’ homes before it was put back together at the restaurant. The master carpenter oversaw the

“We did a light refinishing,” Chuck said.

“We didn’t want to change the character of it. We did a little of steel wool. It’s all the original stuff. We wanted to go with an old Chicago look, so we put this marble floor in. We designed the space to fit this.”

In 1998, Glass Chimney owner Dieter Puska, with a builder friend James Taylor of Custom Homes of Carmel, decided to establish the Glass Chimney Bar room. The mahogany bar was built the same year, and it became one of the hottest spots in Carmel. People entering the Glass Chimney would be greeted by the tuxedo-dressed Gabriel Piron.

“You’d go to the bar and hear what the $13 special for the night was,” said Chuck, a frequent visitor. “It was packed to the gills. My wife (Lynn) and I went there often, and we saw a lot of people from Carmel.”

Puska opened the original Glass Chimney restaurant in the Main Street shop-

ping center at Old Meridian Street in 1976.

In 1979, he moved around the corner on the Old Meridian Street to a larger spot he had to remodel.

Chuck Lazzara said Puska has offered to display his cognac collection at the bar.

“A lot of people we’ve shown this to have said they can’t wait to come back,” he said. “At first we thought we have it up here and have a bartender up here in case a few people want to drink. But everyone who has come in said they want to come up here, so that’s why we sectioned it off in its own space.”

Chuck moved to Carmel in 1975, working as a real estate agent before opening Ritz Charles in 1985.

A 2008 Carmel High School graduate, Tony made the feasibility of a downtown Carmel steakhouse his DECA project as a senior. He graduated from Ball State’s entrepreneurship program in 2013, using the steakhouse as his thesis.

The Indy Shorts Festival concluded July 29. All the Choice winners will have encore screenings at the Heartland International Film Festival, Oct. 11 to 21, in Indianapolis.

“Grateful,” which won for Indiana Spotlight, chronicles the story of Indianapolis resident Jenni Berebitsky, who suffers from ALS. Geist resident Amy Pauszek, who has her Where’s Amy photo column in Current Publishing Inc., was the film’s executive producer and producer.

“The reason this award is so prestigious is because it is a statement to the major film industry and its executives that our film is marketable, profitable and will go places after the festival,” Pauszek said.

Other Audience Choice winners were “The Happiness Machine,” directed by Rebecca Blumhagen for Documentary Short; “Alternative Math,” directed by David Maddox for Narrative Short; and “The Driver Is Red,” directed

by Randall Christopher for Animated Short.

CCP stages ‘The Kitchen Witches’

Courtnie Janikowski had already developed an affinity for “The Kitchen Witches.”

“I was in this show about five PLAY years ago in my hometown of Columbus (Ind.),” said Janikowski, who will direct the comedy for Carmel Community Players. “I played Robi, the grunge, hipster camera person, so I had tattoos up and down my arm and I had blue hair. I brought this to CCP and said, ‘This show is hilarious. We need to do this show.’ They loved it, so here I am.”

This is Westfield resident Janikowski’s first directing effort with CCP, which will present “The Kitchen Witches” at The Cat Theatre, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel, Aug. 10 to 19. The play is about the members of a cable TV cooking show.

Janikowski has previously served as a stage manager with CCP and acted in “Ragtime” in April.

“A small cast is a lot of fun to build those relationships,” Janikowski said. “It’s tough because it’s a load-in show, so we have to do it all here and load it all over to The Cat. It’s definitely a prop-heavy show and a

food-heavy show.”

Tim Moore, Carmel, who has acted in productions at Grace Church and “Murder on the Nile” for Carmel Apprentice Theatre at The Cat, is a member of the four-person cast.

“This story, although it’s fast-paced and snarky, it has great values in it about how to redeem a relationship,” Moore said.

Plainfield High School student Sydney Heller plays Robi. The other performers are Gina Atwell, Avon, and Denise Fort, Indianapolis.

For Chicago founding member Lee Loughnane, the passion to perform is still strong.

The trumpet player is one CONCERT of three founding members, along with Robert Lamm and James Pankow, still touring.

“We usually play 100 shows a year,” Loughnane said. “We still enjoy playing for people. To be able to do this 50 years later and have people come out and enjoy it at this level, there’s no reason not to do it.”

Chicago will be joined by REO Speedwagon at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center in Noblesville. During the tour, Chicago performs its entire second album as its first set. The second set is all the other hits from the past, Loughnane said.

“When you put a show together, the intent is to make each and every one of them an event for the audience and something they can remember through the years,” Loughnane said. “They actually tell us that when we take pictures before and after the show. People tell us all the time that they remember a specific show back when they were kids.”

“We had started thinking it’s not going to happen,” Loughnane said. “But at the same time, we were on the road playing for full houses. We started thinking if we didn’t get in, why would it matter if we are doing something that a lot of people that are in there aren’t doing, which is still working.

But when (the induction) did come we had a great time with all the people at the show, the rehearsals and seeing the other bands.

It’s like winning the Super Bowl. It’s one of those things that can’t be taken away from you.”

What to get: Shakshuka.

Price: $16.

Anna’s take: The Rail was constructed in an old barn, and the upstairs bar is reminiscent of what the barn may have been like before The Rail opened. A window in the upstairs bar overlooks Westfield’s popular Park Street and the patio. The restaurant specializes in farm-to-table meals, with many of the ingredients locally sourced in Westfield. I ordered the Shakshuka, a Middle Eastern dish comprised of tomato compote, herbs and spices, feta cheese and an egg.

The egg is cooked in the oven with the compote, then topped with mixed microgreens and parsley. The compote’s spices are mostly made up of za’atar, a Middle Eastern herb mix heavy in thyme and toasted sesame, and sumac, which has a lemony-flavor. The egg yolk is still runny, and the traditional way of eating Shakshuka is to break the egg, mix the yolk in with the compote and scoop the contents with a baguette.

To counteract the heaviness of the dish, it is paired with a spinach salad tossed with cucumber, tomato, radishes, red onions, olive oil, vinegar and salt and pepper.

The salad is topped with mint, which adds a Midwestern twist.

The entire dish is vegetarian-friendly and can easily be made vegan by excluding the cheese and egg. The compote is full of flavor, but not spicy in terms of heat. The entire dish was beautifully presented on a wooden plank.

Suggested pairings: La Yunta Torrontes Argentinian white wine, a lighter beer such as a pilsner or a wheat or, for the cocktail drinkers, the Bramble Mule or the Gin Blossom.

Chef’s take: Co-owner/chef Toby Miles said he was taught that tasting a dish is the third step in eating one. The first is seeing the contents and tasting it with the eyes, which is why Miles said presentation is so important. He provided some tips for the home cook for plating a meal.

“Everybody eats with their eyes first.

Sight and smell are the biggest triggers for memory,” Miles said, noting that smelling a dish is the second step to eating. “When you plate something, you want all your components to be able to stand alone by themselves but complement each other at the same time. We like grouping to make the dishes pop a little bit more.”

Although every chef is different, Miles suggests using colorful ingredients, letting them stand out and adding a little bit of salt are all ways to turn a novice chef into one who is up and coming in the cooking world.

Carmel library to host Bollywood Dance seminar

Wells recently purchased a commercial property in Indianapolis that has become the new home for his art shop, Wicked Kolor. The shop was previously at 770 E. 106th St., in Home Place.

Wells was a graffiti artist while attending Ben Davis High School and later pursued a degree in multimedia at the IUPUI Herron School of Art & Design and ITT Technical Institute. After graduating in 2004, he opened Wicked Kolor that same year.

“I had a passion for mini trucks,” the Carmel resident said. “I wanted to paint mini trucks, but then once I got into the industry, choppers were the biggest thing, so I started painting choppers and learned to restore and customize vehicles.”

Wells specializes in airbrushing, custom paint and vehicle restoration and modification.

said. “Some days it sucks going to work, but I can say I really enjoy it.”

Last year, Wells heard about Rain on Main from his wife and thought it would be a fun project. He created a rain barrel that resembled a stone well covered in moss and featured a waterfall. Wells said his focus remained on the procedure and technique he used to paint, and it only took him a few days to complete.

The 2018 Rain on Main competition begins Aug. 10 with the weeklong barrel viewing in the Carmel Arts & Design District. It ends Aug. 18 with a silent auction at the Carmel Farmers Market.

The Hindi movie industry based in Mumbai, known as Bollywood, has influenced daily life and culture in India MUSIC for decades. The movies feature bold, colorful costumes, elaborate dance sequences and folk music mixed with R&B. Carmel Clay Public Library will host a Bollywood Dance seminar at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in the library and program room. Aradhana Institute of Dance and Bollywood Beats will showcase different styles of Bollywood dance.

“It’s for all ages,” said Hema Patel, staff member at CCPL. “It’s important to celebrate Indian culture. This will showcase the beautiful colorful outfits and vibrant music of Bollywood.”

AID instructor Archana Thaker will teach audience members traditional Indian folk dance and Bollywood dance moves.

“This is something for her to give back to the community,” Patel said.

Audience members will then have the opportunity to perform what they learned.

“Everyone is always so happy in most of the Bollywood movies and songs,” said Deepak Savanoor, co-choreographer of Bollywood Beats. “Keeping that as a theme, we’re going to be doing a little bit of magic in the beginning in Bollywood style. Then we’ll get the kids dancing and then slowly progress to different forms of dance.”

Indian Independence Day is Aug. 15. Both groups want to share their love of Indian culture with Carmel residents.

“Usually during that time, the community comes together and performs any kind of cultural event — singing, dancing, food, or whatever we can expose to different cultures,” Savanoor said.

He said he hopes Bollywood dance will teach others about unity in diversity.

“With the music, what we’re trying to show is the diversity. We can also have unity, which is beautiful,” Savanoor said.

“With one culture you can integrate other cultures and make it really beautiful.”

Beard, registered landscape architect. Think of a level deck that wraps in front of each door and spills out to a lower patio. Immediately, the space became livable, inviting and easily navigated. The dense tree was thinned to become a focal point which now provides dappled shade while guests relax overlooking the sexy pool scene.

POOL DECKING Although there was plenty of concrete pool decking, it wasn’t quite large enough for comfy lounge chairs. A tumbled sandstone color-paver expansion brought the courtyard Trex deck together and now flows seamlessly. The sitting wall defines the interior courtyard while also offering a perch for overflow crowds or flowering pots.

Grace overcomes grief, guilt Commentary by Lorene Burkhart Several years ago I wrote an article in the Alzheimer’s Association magazine about my mother’s struggle with HEALING Alzheimer’s disease. I’m repeating some of that article because it’s as timely now as it was when I wrote it.

When someone we love dies the slow death that is Alzheimer’s disease, a little bit of us dies with them. Watching a person we’ve known for years become someone we’ll never know requires every bit of patience, strength and faith we can muster.

But wait! We ask ourselves, is relief an appropriate feeling when someone so close to us dies? Along with whatever grief we feel when death finally comes, we also experience guilt over that relief, and the struggle with that emotion keeps true relief at bay. The two five-letter words, grief and guilt, are unavoidable. But I believe they can and should be accompanied by yet another five-letter word, grace. But how do we move from guilt to grace when the grief is sandwiched smack in the middle?

As I watched my mother disappear into the shell that Alzheimer’s had created, I felt frustration and even anger, that she was no longer able to communicate with me, her only daughter. In my sorrow I began to write about her and her life. Here was my grace. I discovered, to my ultimate joy, that the process allowed me to remember who my mother had been in all of her vitality and not what she had become.

In this process I found not only the true relief that had eluded me because of my feelings of guilt, but also comfort. I finished my writing just before her death, and by that time, I was thrilled to have known this remarkable woman who gave birth to me. At last, grace could begin and bring with it the peace of knowing that my dear mother’s troubles in life were over. I threw off the heavy burden of the grief and guilt that came with her passing and rejoiced in the life she had lived.

Helsinki: Beauty in the far north Commentary by Don Knebel Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, thriving amid its natural TRAVEL disadvantages.

In 1550, the king of Sweden, which controlled the area at the time, founded Helsinki as a trading village on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. The city began to grow in the 19th century after Russia defeated Sweden and took control of Finland. Today, Helsinki, with a population of approximately 650,000, occupies its original peninsula and 315 islands, connected by bridges and water transportation.

Located just 2,000 miles from the North Pole, Helsinki is, with the exception of Reykjavik, Iceland, the farthest north of all world capitals. For almost three months in the fall and winter, the sun hugs the horizon, providing about five hours of daylight. Winter temperatures rarely rise above freezing and temperatures of 25 degrees below zero are not unusual. Precipitation falls about 180 days a year, making Helsinki rainier than Seattle.

Despite its climate, Helsinki, always immaculately clean, is routinely ranked among the world’s most livable cities, having one of the world’s highest urban standards of living.

The major sidewalks are heated in the winter.

Residents not wanting to walk can take the efficient Helsinki Metro, the northernmost subway in the world. Four large indoor swimming halls allow year-round swimming. Four other pools provide swimming exclusively for dogs, one offering half-hour lessons. Worldclass museums and theaters provide extraordinary cultural opportunities for such a small city. And, of course, the ubiquitous Finnish saunas provide opportunities to be inside during the cold and dark days of winter. In 2012, Helsinki was named the World Design Capital for its innovative approaches.

Each year, at least 5,000 people move to Helsinki from all around the world. If you get a chance to visit this unique city, take advantage of it.

This is in no way the capital “G” grammar rule for a collective group of humans.

It’s my takeaway based on listening to how people, men and women alike, actually talk in 2018 America. So, I’m totally fine if you guys disagree with the Grammar Guy on this one.

I love collective nouns. A collective noun is a name for the group of similar things. WellGRAMMAR GUY known examples include a pride of lions, a colony of ants, a herd of cows and a murder of crows. Some of my favorite, lesser-known collective nouns are a tower of giraffes, a business of ferrets, a coalition of cheetahs and a prickle of porcupines.

What is the proper term for a group of people? You could accept a number of collective nouns, depending on context: tribe, nation, family or crowd.

But, when it comes to everyday English, how do we refer to our group of friends?

We call them “guys.”
