What’s next in the drug investigation?

When Jennifer Sullivan walked into Dr. Larry Ley’s office on Main Street, she knew something didn’t feel right. crime There was no furniture. It looked like they just moved in. It looked, “barely legitimate,” she said.

Nobody asked her any medical questions, she said.

The process was: Pay the cash – no credit cards or insurance were accepted – and receive your prescription for Suboxone, an opiate used to treat addiction. She said she was never drug tested. Sullivan only saw Ley on her first visit.

After that it was Andrew Dollard who would give her the medicine every two weeks at the clinic.

Sullivan wasn’t surprised to hear the Carmel-based doctor was arrested last week in a massive “pill Ley mill” operation.

“It’s absolutely sickening the level that they take advantage of people,” she said.

But her biggest concern now is what will happen next. What will happen to Ley and his co-defendants in this case? And what will happen to the addicts who came to the doctor for help?

“There are tons of ex-patients of Dr. Ley and these people need somewhere to go,” Sullivan said.

THE CASE Ley’s bail was originally set at $1 million in both Hamilton and Howard counties. On July 31, a judge lowered Ley’s bail to $300,000 in Hamilton County and he remained in jail.

Ley’s attorney, James D. Crum, said his client faces the task of trying to pay 10 percent of his $1 million Carmel bond. After that, Ley would have to meet his Howard County bail, which is cash only. This means he would need to pay the entire amount.

The attorney said Ley’s assets have been frozen.

Several other members of the alleged drug operation were arrested and have been released. Dollard (an attorney who ran, and lost, in a race for Hamilton County Council) was charged in the case and was released on bond of $50,000.

Prosecutor Andre Miksha said they are going through the evidence found at the doctor’s various offices and there is a forensic investigation underway on the computer equipment. Both the homes of Ley and Dollard were also searched.

Since Dollard was a public defender in Hamilton County, there might be a situation where a conflict arises, but Miksha said it’s too early to say.

“That’s for each individual to weigh and figure out,” he said. “Almost everyone in the building has at least known Andrew or worked with him or met him, but whether that’s a conflict or not is for each individual to discern themselves.”

THE POLITICS Miksha wouldn’t say if there will be any investigation into the political activities of Dollard but local Web sites have been closely examining this former candidate.

Many political activists have urged decision-makers to determine if “drug money” was used in Dollard’s campaign.

Carmel police have said they make no distinction

between Dr. Ley and a drug dealer and Ley contributed $2,500 to Dollard’s campaign, according to records. He also sold a home to Dollard for $155,800 when the assessed value was actually $425,000.

Most of Dollard’s campaign appears to have been funded through a political action committee called Royal Tiger PAC. According to records, Dollard contributed $9,209.49 to the PAC in 2014 and then received the exact same amount of money in return from the PAC. The political action committee is now closed.

It is widely said that Pete Emigh, chair of the Hamilton County Republican Party, handpicked Dollard as the preferred “establishment” choice for the vacant council seat. Though, it would be unfair to say that most Republican backed Dollard in the primary. Many chose to support his opponent, Fred Glynn Jr., a Tea Party favorite who ended up winning.

Many big names such as Carmel Dollard Mayor Jim Brainard decided to sit this one out and not take a side.

Emigh did not return calls or e-mails for comment, but referred the issue to Andrew Greider, executive director of the Hamilton County Republican Party.

“There was no indication that anything like this would have come out before the election,” he said.

“And since he lost the election, there is no association or connection between Dollard and the Hamilton County Republican Party.”

Glynn Jr. said he hopes this means people will vet local candidates more thoroughly in the future.

THE DRUGS Many are concerned what this case will mean for doctors who prescribe Suboxone to patients to help addicts cope with painkiller addiction.

Sullivan said she isn’t defending Ley, but wants people to know that Suboxone is not the extremely addicting “synthetic heroin” that some have described it as.

Fairbanks, the nationally recognized addiction recovery center in Indianapolis, administers Suboxone as a part of a treatment program when appropriate.

Robin Parsons, director of adult services at Fairbanks, said there are chemicals in the drug that prevent patients from experiencing a euphoric high.

“I’m sure there are ways to abuse Suboxone, but it’s less likely to lead to overdose than heroin or other narcotics,” she said. “If someone was utilizing medication for treatment of addiction, then it should be only one component of a comprehensive plan for care.”

Major Aaron Dietz, head of the Hamilton/Boone County Drug Task Force, admits the drug isn’t as serious as heroin, but it shouldn’t be taken lightly. He said there are cases of people dying while on the drug and it’s highly addictive.

“We treat this drug very seriously,” he said.

One former Ley patient, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Current that he knew most of the addicts in the doctor’s care were just trying to stay clean.

“We all knew what was going on in that office was wrong. But we needed our scripts. Badly,” he said.

Sullivan said she hopes patients like these can find a safe place to get help before any of them turn back to their previous addictions.

Brainard meets with Obama to discuss climate

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com It’s not every day that the President Barack Obama asks for your opinion on an issue.

Especially if you’re a government Republican.

But Carmel Mayor James Brainard has been working with the White House on a special task force dealing with climate change. He recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to give his opinions on a variety of issues relating to the environment – mostly transportation – and Obama released the recommendations on July 16.

Brainard has made headlines for his support of the environment, including interviews with Bloomberg and The Huffington Post.

“The impacts of climate change are very farreaching,” he said, “and whether you talk about carbon or not, everybody should want to drink clean water and breathe clean air.”

Carmel’s mayor was seen as a transportation expert partly because of his support of roundabouts. It’s believed that because cars don’t stop as much and idle at intersections, that there could be fewer exhaust fumes spewing into the air.

Obama wanted the opinion of municipal leaders because he believes climate change could impact city infrastructures. For coastal towns, hurricanes and rising sea water could be a real threat.

Brainard said he believes it is possible that climate change could play a role in issues such

as flooding on Emerson Road or the potholes caused by the never-ending winter.

But others, such as City Councilor Rick Sharp, disagree with that assertion.

“It seems like a convenient excuse for not having enough money for street repairs,” he said.

Sharp, who is considering a run for mayor, took to his Facebook campaign page to criticize Brainard’s position of climate change when the Huffington Post article came out. He believes the mayor is out of step with the rest of the Republican Party on this issue.

“I am not a climate change denier, but I think particularly some of Obama’s policies are too draconian and we should be taking a more measured approach and get to the change incrementally,” he said.

But Brainard feels that the Republican Party traditionally has been the party that protects the environment – even more so than the Democrats.

He said he believes when Al Gore made global warming one of his top issues during his presidential elections it caused some Republicans to switch on the issue.

“It was Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican, who set aside millions of acres of federal park land,” he said. “It was President Richard Nixon who signed the law establishing the Environmental Protection Agency. It was Earth Day. The Clean Water Drinking Act. The Endangered Species Act. All signed during the Nixon Administration. If any party has a claim historically to environmentalism it was the Republican Party. I point out that conserve is the root of conservative.”

Carmel girls raise funds for Riley Children’s Hospital

But Amanda said Gavin is adapting well and is a “happy boy.”

The goal for the farmers Mmrket – raise $1,000 to dedicate a little red wagon for Riley with a license plate with Gavin’s nickname - Moose. The wagons are used by the children to move around the hospital in style.

“She just has the biggest heart and is the sweetest 7-year-old you could imagine,” Amanda said. “She also collected pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald house because we had a room there.

She also made collection jars out of empty paint cans with Gavin’s picture on them to collect more tabs that she plans to take to Riley in September.”

Ally and Riley’s booth at the farmers market will have snacks and coffee, and will also feature a raffle for items such as signed Sarah Fisher crew shirts and Butler signed apparel. Collection cans will also be on hand for pop tabs.

“We just talked to people we knew locally and friends of people at work and sent out a Facebook message and e-mails and just started collecting things,” Amanda said. “It happened really fast – we only decided to do this a week ago. We have just been flooded with love from so many – even people we don’t know – when Gavin was hurt and we just want to give something back.”

Adam Taylor, of Carmel, has been in the roofing/gutter/siding business for more than eight years and had come to the decision that he wanted to take his knowledge of the industry and build his own business.

Twirling her way to England

By Sophie Pappas • sophie@youarecurrent.com Carmel twirler Adaline Bebo has been selected to represent the United States in the 32nd World Baton Twirling Championachievement ships this week in Nottingham, England.

At that competition, the best baton twirlers from around the world will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in the twirling equivalent of the Olympic Games.

“Being on Team USA is so empowering and has given me such confidence in my abilities as an elite level baton twirler because it gives me the opportunity to work beside the best athletes that the sport has to offer,” Bebo said.

Bebo earned a spot on Team USA by taking fourth place in the final round of the U.S. Trials, July 7 in California, during the U.S. National Baton Twirling Championships. It was here that Bebo took top honors in the 17-year-old solo division, 17-year-old dance twirl division, and the senior dance twirl semi finals.

Bebo will be participating in her second World Championships.

“Team USA has a great mix of veteran competitors and fresh talent this year,” said John Chamberlain, president of the United States Twirling Association, which selects the athletes for Team USA. “They are gifted athletes, who train with the dedication and determination of Olympians and we are excited to cheer them on

as they go for the gold at the World Baton Twirling Championships.”

Team USA will represent the U.S. in men’s and women’s individual events, pairs and team events. Bebo will compete in the senior women’s division and the team division.

Bebo is a junior at Carmel High School where she is a member of National Honor Society and twirls with the CHS Marching Band, a 2012 Bands of America Grand National Champion.

“I can’t wait to watch all of the creativity and inspiration that other athletes pour into their routines and bring to the World Championships,” she said.

Employees of the waste treatment facility are delighted to receive the succulent honey produced by their fellow “worker bees” and Thomas is glad to have a secluded space for the endangered honeybees to reproduce.

“Every time you get into a hive, you see what those insects do and what they are about. It’s actually amazing,” Thomas said.

Something is abuzz at the Clay Township Regional Waste District and it’s not associated with their controversial around town proposal to build new sewage tanks. Surrounding the wastewater treatment facility on Mayflower Drive at the edge of the western Carmel border is a beautiful natural habitat filled with colorful wildflowers, tall prairie grass, butterflies, bird and bat houses as well as several honeybee hives that make life a little sweeter at a place not exactly renowned for its odor.

Howard Thomas, an Irving Materials Inc. concrete truck driver and beekeeper, noticed the wild flowers on the facility’s property while on a job several years ago and thought it would make the perfect home for honeybees. “At first some people thought it was odd but we have bat houses and there is a retention pond out there that has fish, frogs and turtles,” commented Utility Director, Andrew Williams.

In 2010, the facility partnered with the Indiana Wildlife Federation to plant 17 acres of native Indiana prairie grass, wildflowers, trees and plants to create a natural wildlife habitat as part of their environmentally-focused mission.

According to Williams, the nature habitat has saved money by cutting back on the cost of mowing the grounds. They are also cutting costs by replacing lighting with more efficient

Carmel footballer is a star for the Cleveland Gladiators

By Gary Boskovich • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel native Collin Taylor started playing football in the fourth grade. He participated in other sports too, but once achievement he got to high school, he realized that football was the sport he wanted to concentrate on.

“After my freshman year of football at Carmel High School, I had a coach come up and say some things that I haven’t heard a coach tell me before. The coach said if you dedicate yourself to this and work really hard, you can be a really good football player,” Taylor said.

He was a walk-on at Indiana University where he played sparingly as receiver and later switched to safety.

His willingness to work hard and persevere during rough times has worked out good for Taylor. He is now a receiver for the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League and ranks third on the team with 80 receptions and just shy of 1,000 total receiving yards. He’s also scored the third most points on the team for position players. That’s not all. Taylor does a little bit of everything for the Gladiators including spending time at running back and playing on defense. The team clearly values his versatility.

Taylor is especially proud of the team’s accomplishments this season. The Gladiators finished the season at 17-1, secured the number one seed, and will have home field advantage throughout

the playoffs. They set an Arena League record for most wins in a regular season.

“We want to get the Arena Bowl (championship) ring in three weeks, but this team has already made some history coming into the playoffs here so it’s been a wild ride,” Taylor said.

His journey to Cleveland wasn’t a direct line from IU however. Taylor had stints with the Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Des Moines franchises before landing with the Gladiators. He’s played professionally for five years, spending four years in the Arena League and one year in Reading, PA playing in the Indoor Football League.

With a two-year contract with Cleveland in hand; Taylor is comfortable with his current team

and glad to be closer to his family in Carmel.

However, securing a roster spot on an Arena League team is no different from the NFL or Canadian Football Leagues. Competition is fierce and players are often battling opposite former NFL players. “There’s really good competition in this league. I’m playing against defensive backs who’ve played in the NFL, I’m playing with receivers who have been on NFL teams,” said Taylor.

When asked about his biggest thrill playing professionally thus far Taylor said: “Every time I go out there I know the opportunity that I’m given and I know how many people would like to be in the spot that I’m in. I play every game like it’s my last. Just being able to be out there with (my teammates), build these relationships, and just go out every week and essentially go to war with these guys next to me.”

An added bonus for Taylor is having home games in Cleveland, which offers the opportunity for his mother, father, and extended family to see him play.

“I love being able to look up in the stands and see my family there. I’ve been able to literally run up into the stands and celebrate with my family which has been absolutely incredible,” Taylor said.

Taylor intends to keep playing for as long as he can and as long as he remains healthy. Once his playing days are over, he wants to get into the fitness industry and perhaps open up a gym of his own.

The project isn’t officially dead, but it appears that plans to construct waste water storage tanks on a church propergovernment ty are now on life support.

Carmel residents filled the Clay Township Government Center on Wednesday night to voice their displeasure over the idea of building a wet weather storage facility at King of Glory Church on 106th Street near the Millbrook neighborhood. Neighbors were concerned that the tanks would be an eyesore that could lower property values and possibly harm the environment.

The Clay Township Regional Waste District offered to buy land from the church for $106,000, but stated that eminent domain could be used to forcibly take the property. King of Glory leaders considered the offer, but asked on July 25 that the offer be rescinded.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard is not a fan of the proposal and city permits would be needed to construct such a project, something the city might not want to grant.

As a result, City Councilor Kevin “Woody” Rider stood up at the meeting to announce to everyone that he strongly believes this plan won’t proceed.

“Just tell people that this plan is dead,” he told the CTRWD board. “Because I can tell you,

this plan is not going to happen. It’s not going to happen.”

Board President Ron Hagan wouldn’t declare the plan dead, but did note that the next step would have to be eminent domain and that is not an option that is used very regularly. He told the crowd they would take all opinions into consideration and discuss the options at the next public meeting of the board at 7 p.m. on Aug. 11.

The CTRWD provided detailed project sheet and a four-page summary of the project background to all attendees in the hopes that they would understand why the district felt this was the best option. Officials contend that this plan is safe and cost effective and that they would do their best to hide the tanks with tree barriers.

David Hoffman, president of the Millbrook Homeowners Association, asked the board to consider Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard’s suggestion that the tanks be moved to the city’s sewer plant property.

“It may be more expensive but then you aren’t asking these homeowners to shoulder the burden.”

Andrew Williams, utility director for the CTRWD, said the project might take months now considering the need to examine a variety of options and involve the public, but he assures that no decision will be made lightly.

“This is the beginning of a project,” Hagan told the crowd, “not the end of a project.”

Sheriff’s dept. sergeant dies from cancer

Sgt. Kim Jowitt of the Hamilton County sheriff’s office died the morning of July 27, after more than three years of battling cancer. First hired as a civilian employee by the sheriff’s office in 1978, Jowitt became a merit deputy in 1982.

In her more than 30 years in Hamilton County, Jowitt held numerous positions and roles within the sheriff’s office, most recently as an administrative sergeant handling special assignments.

Despite the many ups and downs of Jowitt her battle with cancer, Jowitt remained faithfully optimistic and positive with a fighter’s spirit. She very much loved her job and the impact she made in the community she served.

Jowitt is survived by her husband, Chief Kevin Jowitt of the Noblesville Police Dept., a daughter, Crystal, and her law enforcement brothers and sisters at the sheriff’s office and other agencies. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Due to the death of Jowitt, the open house scheduled as part of the Aug. 5 National Night Out in Hamilton Co. has been postponed. The office is expected to host an open house later this year. Many other agencies will be participating in their own National Night Out events and the department encourages the community to attend those events.

The Carmel High School Show Choir, called the Ambassadors, will clean and polish your car all while entertaining you with the sweet sounds of their latest competition set. In the years past, the talented vocalists-turned-expert car washers have de-grimed more than 200 cars in one day.

“I used to wear my Fitbit,” he said, laughcover story ingly, “And now I’ve got something to make me eat more.”

At a press conference Thursday, Brainard addressed the crowd about the launch of a new program to support Carmel businesses and restaurants along U.S. 31. The program, appropriately titled 31 Bites, is an effort to encourage people to eat at the restaurants along U.S. 31 during the month of August, and into the fall. Orange bracelets, provided by the city and now worn by the mayor, have a flashing light with words that read: “#31Bites, Eat Local, Shop Local.”

The U.S. 31 highway project has been in progress for more than two years, with road closures starting in Westfield and slowly

creeping their way into Carmel. But for Brainard and other city leaders, this is no excuse for the people of Carmel to not patronize the business affected by road closures and construction.

“We are here today to really show support for Carmel’s local businesses along U.S. 31 who have had a challenging summer with the current highway project,” Brainard said. “We absolutely support [the Indiana Dept. of Transportation’s] decision to close the highway. It saves millions, it’s a safer work environment for workers, it gets the job done faster … Folks in this area need a little extra attention. This is about them.”

The hashtag of #31Bites was created by social media guru and Carmel resident, Dan McFeely, who is a contracted worker for the city. McFeely said that he hopes people will eat at restaurants along U.S. 31, take photos of themselves doing so, and post their pictures to Twitter or Facebook pages, with the hashtag #31Bites.

“We wanted to kind of create this frenzy on Facebook,” McFeely said.

Carmel Chamber of Commerce president Mo Merhoff said that she knows construction projects are always hard for local businesses, but that she hopes people “re-learn” streets and start to take smaller, local roads to reach work or home.

“The quicker the completion, the easier it is for those businesses to adjust and recover any lost traffic,” she said. “In this case, Carmel’s having frontage roads like Illinois and Pennsylvania streets means finding an alternate way to get to your favorite businesses is still possible.”

Brandye Hendrickson, an INDOT district deputy commissioner who has been working in Carmel, said that closing highways is never an easy decision.

“We understand the inconveniences experienced during construction,” she said. “We want everyone to know that while a section of U.S. 31 is closed until Thanksgiving, Carmel businesses remain open and so do the local routes to reach them.”

Hendrickson said that INDOT is in partnership with mapping companies such as Google Maps and Garmin Navigation, in order to provide people the most up-to-date information on how to get to their destinations.

“It’s important that people remember to keep their software updated,” she said, in regards to iPhone applications such as Maps and Google Maps.

She noted that if people have updated software, then they should be redirected via their navigation systems. Also, people can sign up for text message updates from INDOT about Carmel traffic, by registering at the website: www.us31HamiltonCounty.in.gov.

Nixon as a Dem: Different outcome?

With the upcoming 40th anniversary of the resignation of President Richard Nixon on Aug. 8, we thought about the whole repugnant affair in the wake of Watergate, in particular, the 18.5-minute gap made famous by Nixon’s secretary, Rose Mary Woods. You may remember this episode: Woods claimed she had reached to answer the phone and instead of hitting the stop button, mistakenly hit the record button, thus causing the gap, or portions of it. Let’s face it, only a Clinton can get away with that story. Nixon’s credibility went out the window at that moment, as well it should have.

Now, fast-forward to today and the latest IRS scandal, specifically the missing emails of Lois Lerner, about which we wrote in the July 29 edition of Current. Conveniently, Lerner’s computer crashed, and we’re expected to believe that these things just happen. Right. To whom did she send those emails, and how high in President Barack Obama’s administration did they rise? Maybe we’re wrong; someone other than a Clinton can get away with this stuff.

The Democrats remain eerily silent on this issue, and we might remind them that the first Article of Impeachment against Nixon was adopted by a bipartisan vote. Nixon, too, abused the IRS powers for his own benefit, but the difference is the nation was outraged and embarrassed by it then. Not so now. There’s barely a whiff of indignation on a national scale. So back to the disgraced, fallen president, Nixon. We believe he must be spinning in his grave, thinking he was born way too soon.

Or, more accurately, he wishes he had been a Democrat during his political career.

Taking the leap of faith Commentary by Terry Anker Perhaps it is because I find myself sitting in loads of meetings. Perhaps it is because my attention span seems as dedicated as that of a 3-year-old’s. Perhaps it is because my undergraduate education in the humanities actually did impress upon me the value of attention to detail and commitment to critical thought. Regardless of the impetus, each meeting, speech, presentation and podcast is an opportunity to garner insight. Not that life-changing, overwhelming and radical insight is to be routinely expected. If we are spending our time with the right folks, there is much to be learned.

Recently I was in the company of a small group of the uninitiated as the CEO of the Carmel Performing Arts Center, Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, told of the history and future of the complex and its many troupes. Brilliantly, she framed the story in the context of her own life and journey from Cuba to Carmel. The information was not new to me, but the delivery was captivating.

One phrase in particular caught and held my attention. American naturalist John Burroughs is attributed as saying “leap and the net will appear.” Moskalenko shared how the quote provides strength and guidance during difficult periods in her life. So even as the perfunctory retelling of the stats for the Palladian style concert hall and other details could no longer hold my attentions, I imagined if I could be a leader, or for that matter a person, who could find faith enough to leap?

The world around us is filled with opportunity for reflection. But most of us move from meeting to meeting, from day to day, from year to year, without out so much as a snag of consideration.

Could I leap? I’m not sure, but I am grateful to Moskalenko for leading me to wonder.

May I just complain about my children and husband for one minute? And before anyone flies off her broom handle to humor write me a nasty-gram about how I should appreciate them for who they are, let me preface this by stating that I love my family dearly and that I realize this is totally a non-issue in the grand scheme of the world. There. Happy?

‘Cause I’m not. I recently returned from a professional development workshop, a twoday gathering of teachers at a state college to reinvigorate us for the upcoming school year.

Basically it was a summer camp for grownups. We ate gourmet meals, networked and told stories, and ended our time with a sort-of talent show where I was able to showcase my questionable musical theater talents in a three-minute rendition of Frozen. Awesome, right?

But when I arrived home, feeling motivated, refreshed and for once, valued, guess what greets me? A sick kid whose dad hasn’t quite gotten around to purchasing medicine, a sink and countertop filled with crusty dishes and fruit flies, and, I’m not joking, a pile of dog poo on the bathroom floor mat. The grass is approaching harvest height, there’s no milk, and only one child made it to their summer sports lesson. In just a little over 48 hours, folks, the Wilson household completely fell apart.

Now I’m not the type of person who thinks, “Ah, that’s sweet. My family needs me!” My immediate reaction cannot be printed here, and fortunately, I was able to lock those comments down before they escaped my pursed lips. (I couldn’t have my children thinking I’d been away at Teacher Potty Mouth School.) But honestly! How hard would it have been for Doo to remind the kids that I’d be home today and to at least pick up the place? And for that matter, why aren’t they thinking of that themselves?

They’re all capable of loading a dishwasher and scraping up canine crap! Have I just spent 15 years raising lazy, inconsiderate brats?

Granted, Doo has been ungodly busy with work lately, and parenting is down near “Replace floorboard in back corner of basement” on his To Do list. Still, I just can’t understand why certain things get neglected. He managed to grab a beer with friends; he couldn’t find 10 minutes to run to CVS for some Dayquil?

Jeeze, I sound like a naggy, old bitty even to myself. It was just such a nice break to be single and kid-less for a few days that I’m having difficulty acclimating back to reality. I promise my pity-party will end with the replacement of a certain bathmat, okay? So please, no hate mail. Peace out.

No storm water fee Editor, I read an article in the Current in Carmel about “Be ready to pay $5 storm water fee” and had to share my story. I moved into my home in 2004 and never noticed any storm water collection ditches in front of my home or my neighbor’s houses. That’s because many of the homes storm water collection ditches were cover over a long time ago due to neglect.

After a few years passed, I noticed when it rained a substantial amount storm water started running from the front of my neighbor’s yard flooding into his driveway then continuing down between our homes and running off through our back yards.

I called Carmel Town Hall and they directed me to the Public Works Dept., a couple of very nice City employees came out and informed me that even though the storm water collection ditch is on property that belongs to the City of Carmel, it’s the homeowners’ responsibility to pay for the upkeep, maintenance and repairs.

I was under the impression it’s all part of the City of Carmel’s storm water collection system. I wanted a second opinion and asked for their advice and they gave me the phone number for the Dept. of Engineering of Carmel.

After making contact and an appointment with the Engineering Dept., a very nice young man came out and surveyed the situation he agreed

with the Dept. of Public Works. So I grabbed my wheelbarrow, pick axe and shovel and started digging out the storm water ditch in front of my next door neighbor’s house and mine.

Two seasons have passed and unfortunately, despite my best efforts and back-breaking work, storm water still runs between our houses. The property belongs to The City of Carmel but the expense and upkeep of the collection of storm water is my responsibility.

How strange, the City of Carmel claims this property belongs to them but denies any responsibility for any kind of upkeep, funding or maintenance on it. I can’t landscape, plant flowers or trees, alter it in anyway or even put up a sign on it because it belongs to the City of Carmel.

But I can be held accountable for mowing it, weed eating it and now as a bonus I’m going to be charged an additional $5 tax while working on the City of Carmel’s storm water collection ditch to insure it functions properly.

Former City engineer Mike McBride justified the tax increase saying Indianapolis, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield have created similar utilities. I know for a fact that one out of these named Cities takes full responsibility for maintaining the entire storm water process from collection to processing.

Tilted Kilt shouldn’t open Editor, In the last week or so, I’ve mentioned to several people that I think Carmel is such a great place to live and that I’m so grateful to live here.

Driving through downtown Carmel on a summer night, you see the town just alive with people and everyone is out and about and it’s so fun.

So when I read the article in this past Current about the Tilted Kilt opening here in the fall, I was really disappointed – especially because, according to the article, they’re known for their “scantily-clad, buxom waitresses with bare midriffs and short plaid kilts.” No doubt it would

probably be a popular restaurant, but in my opinion it would not add to what makes Carmel a great city. Instead, it would bring a touch of raunchiness to it. I think about how every girl who will work there is somebody’s daughter.

In the Gospel Jesus says that “everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28) That’s not to say that everyone or even any man that goes there will have that on his mind, but it won’t be easy, so why take the chance.

warmth and strength in caring for those who are no longer with us.

Carmel actress Smith returns home, reprises role

“Church Basement Ladies,” a series of musical comedies that does for rural Minnesota Lutheran churchwomen what “Nunsense” theatre did for urban Catholic nuns, has given a professional boost to a young actress who grew up in Carmel.

Hillary Smith, 24, plays Beverly, a 15-year-old confirmand helping her mother and two older women prepare a Reformation Sunday meal in the basement kitchen of a church to which all are devoted.

Smith says the characters’ bond goes beyond that. “Our Smith director [Curt Wollan] said that the heart of the show is the characters’ love for each other. There’s joke after joke and laugh after laugh,” she said. “But what people fall in love with about the shows is the five of them [counting Pastor Gunderson] are each other’s family.”

The actress, a graduate of Cathedral High School who went on to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree at Florida State University, drew on her offstage experience to indicate how this

resonates with audiences. “Growing up we all have our versions of that – besides our birth families,” Smith said. “It’s about that group that helps shape the person you’re becoming. They are characters you can relate to.”

Smith is returning to the series after a year off, joining a cast mostly of actors reprising their roles from earlier “Church Basement Ladies” productions. The veterans are Licia Watson, Karen Pappas and Eddie Curry. Carrie SaLoutos is the newcomer.

“It’s a really good experience,” Smith said. “I never played the same role twice. I know how the show works, and that really helps. I can explore my character more. I know where we left off before, and it’s nice working with the same people.”

“A Mighty Fortress,” like its predecssors, involves handling a lot of props – it takes place in a busy kitchen, after all. And familiarity with those items has helped Smith as well: “It’s difficult to juggle all of them the first time around,” she said.

Since her graduation as a musical-theater major, Beef & Boards “Church Basement Ladies” gigs (in 2012 and this year) since graduation stand out in Smith’s short résumé.

“I’ve been very lucky so far,” she said of her career. “I’ve been working very consistently.”

She has appeared in summer seasons at Wagon Wheel Theater in northern Indiana and Fireside Theater in Wisconsin; locally she’s played a couple of roles in Indiana Repertory Theatre’s annual production of “A Christmas Carol.”

Now based in New York, Smith dreams of being on Broadway someday, but basing herself there is also wise from the standpoint of doing auditions for regional theaters as well.

The actress’ mother, Kelly Butler Smith, is head of young adult theater at Civic Theatre.

When Hillary was growing up, her mother ran a dance studio and dance was the first “leg” of the three-legged stool that musical-theater specialists must rely on. The other two – acting and singing – were developed during her education.

“We’ve always shared our love for theater,” she says of her family, who along with local friends have been in audiences for “A Mighty Fortress,” which opened July 5. “I’m really lucky it’s been part of my life since I was a little girl.”

Amateur Hour ready to roll with films, website

Amateur Hour Productions, a new company run by Zionsville graduates, is getting its name out there with short films on now open YouTube as well as an upcoming website designed to bring together other amateur filmmakers.

“We had a couple of things in mind when creating Amateur Hour. The first was that we wanted to entertain,” Amateur Hour co-creator Collin Stroup said. “The other reason was that we wanted to find a way to help others get ahead in filmmaking.”

The rest of the team consists of Henry Yeager, Caolan Breen, Ben Evenson, Chris Reigle, and Gus McKinney. They have been producing short films on YouTube together for the past couple months with a repertoire that so far includes comedy sketches, movie reviews, and entertainment news analysis.

“When we are creating a short film or YouTube segment, we usually start by writing and storyboarding. Then we figure out locations and actors and start shooting,” Stroup said. “We are typically pretty relaxed on set because we all know our roles and it helps us feed off each other. After it’s all been filmed, we edit it and then we have a final product.”

The group is looking to expand its craft and offer opportunities to fellow filmmakers with its new website, which will launch in the fall.

Stroup was doing research into techniques and homemade equipment to improve his films and found himself wanting a one-stop film resource website from which he and other fans of the work could benefit.

“The website is a massive undertaking. It’s going to have everything: Articles, reviews, a podcast, instructional videos, and most importantly a film contest every other month,” Stroup said.

Maddie Baillio wins first place in Songbook vocal competition A few things are clear after viewing Great American Songbook master classes before the big awards show. Michael Feinstein’s passion for the music of the Great American Songbook is infectious. It extends to the students he instructs and attracts extraordinary musical guest coaches and judges to the competition.

If you missed the free-to-the-public master classes, you missed a rare treat to watch master musicians at work. Cheryl Bentyne, well known as the soprano voice of The Manhattan Transfer, approached coaching with a meticulous aggressiveness. Bentyne instructed Maddie Baillio, “Everybody in the world knows “Misty”. Go into any bar and you’ll hear somebody ask for “Misty”. You’ve got to make it your own. Maybe … almost whisper it.

Make it intimate.” To Baillio’s credit, she made the song her own. Along with a second song, “Murder, He Says”, two days later, she won audience approval and first place in the Great American Songbook High School Competition. The prize brought Baillio $3,000 and a chance to perform at least once with Michael Feinstein.

Judge and coach Marc Cherry a well-known TV writer and producer, helped the competitors bring performance savvy to the stage. Cherry is known for writing and/or producing mega TV hits “Designing Women,” “Golden Girls,” and “Desperate Housewives.” To Merissa Beddows who sang the classic song “At Last,” Cherry instructed, “Let your hands match your emotion.” Feinstein continued the instruction, “Do something that’s not Etta James.”

Feinstein brought attention to important nuances of musicality and physicality in the students’ performances. “Make it a little more organic,” he instructed Milla Guerra, a student with strong theatrical training. To Grayson Samuels, Feinstein said, “When you’re pointing in the air (finding notes with his fingers), it means you’re not paying attention to the lyrics.” On awards night, Samuels won the Songbook Celebration Award worth $1,000.

Sylvia McNair, a two-time Grammy Award winner and regional Emmy Award winner, was also a judge. High school competitors not previously named were: Nia Savoy from Shreveport Louisiana, who won the Songbook Inspiration Award, worth $1,000; Jacob Stuckert from Grove City, Ohio; Nick Drivas from Palmetto, Fla.; Paige Brown from Indianapolis; Claire Dickson from Medford, Mass.; Jordan Plutzer from Mountain View, Calif.; Molly Hernandez from Glen Ellyn, Ill.; and Christina Euphrat from San Anselmo, Calif.

The annual competition is sponsored by the Great American Songbook Foundation, the only U.S. competition dedicated solely to music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early-to-mid-20th century.

Fruit salad – with sauce!

One of the best joys about summer is the variety and abundance of fruits in the markets! I cannot think of a more refreshing dessert than this delicious and exotic fruit salad recipe! Alice Waters say in her book Chez Panisse Fruit: “Fruit, more than any of the other foods we consume, has a way to go right to the heart of our being. Fruit is beautiful to look at and beautiful to smell.”

You will be able to find all these tropical fruits at Saraga International Market. If you haven’t visited this amazing store you will find that it’s worth the trip; this market will take you on a virtual trip around the world!

Note: This is not really a recipe, but more an outline – you can adapt it to make your own tropical fruit salads. The amounts of the fruits are not given, since this is up to you.

Prepare the basic fruit sauce and add the fruits of your choice to it. It is preferable to make the salad a day in advance and leave to macerate overnight before serving. Some fruits, like bananas and kiwis should be added to the salad at the last minute. In general four-to-five fruits mixed with the sauce make a delicious salad; the quantity and variety of the fruit depends on your taste.

Heartburn, acid reflux and GERD Commentary by Robert Siwiec, MD

• Consuming certain foods and beverages, including citrus, carbonated beverages, alcohol, chocolate, and spicy or fatty foods • Taking medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and certain blood pressure medicines While occasional heartburn is not generally a cause for concern, heartburn that occurs more than two or three times a week should be evaluated by a primary care doctor or gastroenterologist. If left untreated, GERD can lead to complications, such as Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal cancer. Tests used to diagnose acid reflux and GERD include pH monitoring of the esophagus, endoscopy and manometry.

Once a diagnosis of GERD is made, there are several ways to properly manage and treat this condition. Many doctors will consider lifestyle modifications as a first-line treatment. This may mean losing weight in addition to altering the diet and/or changing eating behaviors.

Prescription medications that work by reducing stomach acid are also commonly used in the treatment of GERD. It’s important to talk to your primary care doctor or a gastroenterologist if you suffer from frequent or recurring heartburn.

Heartburn, a burning sensation behind the breastbone, is often considered merely an uncomfortable nuisance. People wellness are sometimes surprised to learn that heartburn is not a disease. It’s actually a symptom of acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid splashes back up into the esophagus, causing irritation and often heartburn. GERD is a more severe and chronic form of acid reflux that can lead to serious health problems.

Common causes of acid reflux disease include: • Faulty valve (called the lower esophageal sphincter) between the stomach and esophagus that relaxes more often than it should, resulting in acid reflux • Hiatal hernia (This occurs when part of the stomach moves above the diaphragm, a muscle wall that separates the stomach and chest, which can lead to acid reflux.)

• Being overweight or obese • Lying down right after eating • Eating too close to bedtime • Pregnancy (The expanding uterus pushing up on the stomach, in addition to circulating pregnancy hormones, can both lead to acid reflux.)

A ‘heartfelt thanks’ On June 25, Riverview Health Foundation recently hosted more than 200 golfers and 40 volunteers during its 22nd Annual Heartfelt Thanks Golf Tournament at Pebble Brook Golf Club in Noblesville. The event, sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, raised more than $100,000 to benefit Riverview Health.

Officials said the annual tournament helps raise money for the improvement of patient services and facilities at Riverview Health. Some of the causes recently supported by the tournament include funding a large-bore MRI to better identify health issues, purchasing equipment for Riverview Health Heart & Vascular and supporting women’s heart disease programs.

During the past 22 years, Riverview Health Foundation has netted more than $2 million in support of Riverview Health.

Understanding the AMT

The last series of posts was spent attempting to shed light on the financial services profession, the different business models, finance and ways in which financial professionals work with clients.

I sincerely hope you found that information valuable and applicable and that you can use it to make a well-informed decision on who you align with to serve you and your family.

Moving along, I’d like to switch gears and discuss AMT, or the Alternative Minimum Tax. Originally enacted in 1969 and aimed at addressing the fact that approximately 200 Americans found a way not to pay income tax, this piece of legislation has grown more complex and is focused on ensuring that all Americans pay a minimum amount of federal income tax. In essence, it sets a floor on total tax liability.

The number of taxpayers affected by AMT liability has grown from about 20,000 in 1970 to an estimated 3.9 million in 2013 and is projected to be more than 6 million by 2023. Without proper planning, you could find yourself paying this additional tax.

AMT is calculated from AMTI (AMT Income), which equals AGI (adjusted gross income) minus itemized deductions plus AMT preference items.

The list of preference items is too long to fit into this column, so one planning piece when consider-

ing making investments is to ask yourself or your financial professional whether the gains and/or income on the investment is subject to AMTI. You may be asking yourself “How do I know if I’m subject to AMT?” The most straight-forward way to answer that question is this: if you’re AMTI is above $82,100 and you file “married filing jointly” or it’s above $52,800 as a single taxpayer, you’ll have to go through the calculation process to determine IF you owe MORE taxes than you’ve already paid through the traditional tax calculation process. After calculation, if your AMT liability is more than your regular tax liability, your “AMT tax” will be the difference between the numbers.

Zürich: A Zwinglian legacy

With fewer than 400,000 residents, Zürich, Switzerland, houses the world’s second-largest gold market and fourth-largest travel stock exchange. Its per capita income is among the highest in the world. Some see Zürich’s remarkable economic successes as the legacy of a 16th-century priest virtually unknown in the United States.

The Romans founded Zürich in 15 B.C. along the Limmat River that flows north from Lake Zürich. The lake and the nearby Glarus Alps whose melting glaciers feed it create one of the most picturesque backdrops of any city in Europe. During the middle ages, Zürich was a selfgoverning city-state and member of the Swiss Confederacy.

In 1518, Ulrich Zwingli became priest of Zürich’s Grossmunster Church. Like Martin Luther, his contemporary in Germany, Zwingli sought to reform the Roman Catholic Church but soon concluded reform was impossible. By 1528 about half the cities of the Swiss Confederacy had followed Zwingli in rejecting the authority of the Pope. Like the later John Calvin in Geneva, Zwingli preached discipline, thrift and self-reliance, instilling in Zürich what became known as the “Protestant ethic.”

Many consider Zwingli – killed and mutilated in a major battle between Swiss Catholics and Protestants in 1531 – one of the fathers of the Reformation, along with Luther and Calvin.

Under the 1848 constitution creating the Swiss federal government, Zürich became the capital of the Zürich Canton. The city is governed by a citizen assembly meeting in the old town hall curiously located in the river. Influenced by Zwingli, Zürich has long deserved its reputation for efficiency, integrity, prosperity and, some would say, dullness. Zürich has lately cultivated a different side, reportedly now sporting the highest night club density of any city in Europe to go along with its 50 museums.

The marriage of hard work by day with partying by night has succeeded, with recent surveys identifying Zürich as the city having the world’s best quality of life. It has also become one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, with one of every three residents born in another country.

The gnomes of Zürich are hiding no more.

Imply vs. infer Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “Dear Grammar Guy, I hear people on a regular basis mixing up ‘imply’ and ‘infer.’ It drives me crazy! Could Grammar Guy you please write a column explaining the difference? Maybe I can pin it on my cubicle wall as a sort of subtle hint.”

Answer: I think I can touch on the difference – as long as you promise not to go pinning my columns on other people’s walls. No one likes an aggressive grammar enthusiast.

“Imply” and “infer” are two sides of the same coin, which is to say that whenever an implication is present, an inference may also be drawn. First things first though: Let’s see some definitions.

Imply: “To express something in an indirect way. To suggest something without saying or showing it plainly.”

Infer: “To form an opinion from evidence. To reach a conclusion based on known facts. To guess or surmise.”

If your boss is sitting in his or her office with the door open and a smile on his/her face, that implies you might be welcome to walk in and chat. If your boss storms into his office and locks

the door, however, you should probably draw the opposite conclusion.

Consider the second example. Within that sentence there is someone implying something and another person inferring something. The boss, without saying a word, is conveying with body language and other identifiable clues that he wants to be left alone. That’s an implication.

The employee, on the other hand, can read the clear message – “Leave me alone” – from those nonverbal signals. That’s an inference.

The best way to keep these two words straight in your head is to remember this: To imply is to send a signal, and to infer is to receive or interpret that signal. The signaler need not be a person, either. If you see large rocks strewn across a mountaintop road, it’s safe to infer there’s been a rockslide and you may be in danger. And if you come into work next week and find this column pinned to your cubicle, you may infer that someone didn’t take my advice.

On the surface, it seems so simple. It is a harmless, quick way to improve a room.

It really is easy until the decorating moment the lid comes off of the first can of paint and the roller hits the wall. Suddenly, it is a whole new ball game and the tensions rise.

Color is not a tangible entity. It is simply light rays that are perceived by the brain. It is the product of elements present in the room and can morph without warning. If not selected properly, it can keep you up at night.

The strips and decks of color at every paint and home improvement store seem, on the surface, like there are an infinite number of choices.

For 95 percent of the interior color situations, we can throw out the bright or clean colors. This leaves the muted or neutral tones … the colors which are mixed with black or umber to grey them down for a richer, more complicated color.

Most homeowners can find a perfectly fine color within the predetermined hues that are represented by these computer generated color chips. There are, however, times when the right color just isn’t there.

The symptom of this is stacks and stacks of chips laid out on the kitchen table and a gaggle of test quarts cast aside. The cause is not indecision … the right color simply isn’t there.

perfect color is to relax and identify two “almost colors.” “Almost colors” are hues that have been tested on poster board with the same sheen that will be used in the finished room.

Remember, testing right on the wall is the direct path to a disastrous encounter with the color beast. Color perception can be contaminated by the close proximity if it is viewed on the same surface.

Also, look at wall color as you would see it on the wall … vertically!

I recently had a success with a custom color when my client had moved to total frustration with solo attempts at identifying a color.

The first color, Retreat by Sherwin Williams appeared just a bit too green and Aqua Smoke

by Porter was just a bit too blue. A 50/50 mix of the two colors provided a hue that was just right for our project! We had the color matched by computer at the paint store and the recipe was logged under their name for future reference.

Mixing your paints to achieve a hue that is distinctively yours just requires a few plastic containers with lids and 2 quarts of “almost colors” in the correct sheen. Changing sheen can change the way you perceive your color!

Fill the container with half of each color leaving enough space to shake. The critical part is an even dispersion of the tones. When the color differentiation streaks have disappeared, test this newly developed color on, you guessed it, poster board.

If it is a winner, you have developed a color that is yours and only yours.

Before you go to the paint stores and ask them to do the mixing for you, please reconsider.

Paint stores are set up to mix their preset colors based on their recipes. Most are willing to tweak colors on the spot but mixing is above and beyond the call of duty.

When just the right hue is identified, the color beast is assuaged and a good night’s sleep is possible.

Wetbar: From wasted space to a great family hangout Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING WET BAR: This home is located in the Village of West Clay in Carmel. The original lower level wet bar area was blueprint for less than ideal. The ownimprovement ers wanted a space to accommodate their large family and also display and store beverages. While the original wet bar cabinetry was in good condition, it was outdated and did not have the proper mechanisms to lock away opened bottles.

CABINET MODIFICATIONS: The existing cabinets were painted white and enhanced with cosmetic changes. The existing wine rack was raised up and a new stainless steel rack was installed to store and display decorative stemware. Crown molding was added to the upper cabinets and a 6” deep pullout drawer was added. Brushed nickel locks were installed to properly secure the couple’s liquor. “Tropic Brown” granite, a Jenn-Air beverage fridge, a brushed nickel Moen faucet and glass/slate tile backsplash dramatically improved the final look.

RAISED LEDGE & ISLAND: The main goal was to add storage and seating space. The original half wall was removed and a raised ledge with decorative columns was installed. New cabinets with “Vecchio” glass fronts were added. To maximize seating space, flush metal bracket supports were used for the granite overhang. To add visual interest, painted white molding was installed around

FINISHING DETAILS: To illuminate the wet bar, LED tape under-cabinet lighting was installed. A Kichler “Triad” Chandelier in an Oiled Rubbed Bronze finish with dual upward and downward facing lighting was hung over the island. Recessed can lights and a coordinating Kichler flush-mount light were installed in the ceiling. 18”×18” multi-color porcelain tile was installed in the bar area and new carpet in a “Hazy” color was installed throughout the entire lower level.
