A string of tragedies – losing two sons to untimely deaths and seeing his wife diagnosed twice with cancer and once with liver failure – could cause any person to lose his lease on life. But for Jack Badger, these tragedies have fueled a passion for giving back to his community.

As a Carmel resident for 41 years, Badger, 72, has impacted the community tremendously, according to Jeff Worrell, director of the city’s volunteer initiative, Carmel Can. “His willingness to give his time and talent are really what make him an amazing volunteer,” Worrell said of Badger. “He wants to see good things happen. He is a humble, nice and generous man.”

Badger devotes about 30 hours a week to volunteering for the Carmel Dad’s Club, American Liver Foundation, Carmel High School Athletics, Carmel United Methodist Church and many other local organizations.

His involvement with the Dad’s Club started more than 30 years ago, when his son Mark died at the age of 10 from an inoperable brain tumor. As a tribute to his son’s memory, Badger maintains the Mark Badger Memorial Park.

“I saw it as an opportunity to do something significant for the Carmel community and honor our son Mark,” Badger said.

Jack Beery, president of the Carmel Dad’s Club, said Badger’s influence on the club has been immeasurable.

“So very often I’ll show up at work and Jack is there, doing whatever needs to be done,” Beery said. “He always steps up for the club whenever he is needed.”

Also a board member for the American Liver Foundation’s Heartland Division, which serves Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, Badger gives back to the system that saved his wife Ila’s life. Through a liver transplant in 2001, Ila overcame a nearly life-ending disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.

When Badger’s oldest son David died of cardiac arrest in 2006, he was able to become a complete tissue donor.

In an essay Ila wrote as part of a contest for Astellas, the drug company that makes her medication, Ila explained how her and her husband’s lives came full circle.

“A few months after his death we learned that one of David’s heart valves saved the life of a 3-week-old little girl in Wisconsin,” she wrote. “We rejoice with her family as we celebrate our beloved son. Like our donor family, we understand that knowing our son saved the lives of others has helped us in our grieving process.”

In all, David’s donation saved the lives of seven individuals.

116th AND KEYSTONE UPDATE - The closing of 116th Street and Keystone Parkway has been rescheduled to take place in stages. The first closure, affecting only the intersection on the west side of Keystone, will take place during the overnight hours of Aug. 4. This closure will remain in place for 30 days. Approximately 7-10 days after the west side closes, the east side of the intersection will close and remain closed for 30 days as well. Keystone Parkway will remain open for traffic. Detour routes will be posted.

STATE FAIR GEARING UP FOR BIG OPENING Hand-washing stations. Designated smoking areas. Air-conditioned buildings.

Tasteful landscaping. A row of new and refurbished structures on the once sparcely populated “north side.” More days – five more – and “more fun,” as they advertise, at the Indiana State Fair (Aug. 7-23). This is not your father’s state fair.

In fact, if you haven’t been to the fun at Fall Creek and 38th Street in the last decade, this is probably not the fair you remember either. Beginning with an $8 million renovation of the West Pavilion – aka The Cattle Barn – in 2001 and through millions more in construction and renovations, the nation’s sixth-oldest state fair has followed the lead set forth by theme parks who repeatedly “reinvent themselves” with some new mega-attraction to get people coming back for more.

“We actually don’t want to be another King’s Island,” says Margaret Davidson of Carmel, who as director of presentation/development for the fair has helped shape some of its changes.

“We’re bigger and DAVIDSON better than that. We have a much broader mission.”

“But we do study what they do, and what they do is keep it fresh. You repackage it with something new and something different, so that the person who says ‘’ already went to the fair; why should I go back?’ wants to go back.”

Groundskeepers are theme-park finicky, too, about keeping the grounds clean and free of litter as they relentlessly collect what is tossed aside and keep trash receptacles hungry. To help keep patrons germ-free, there are more than a dozen hand-washing stations spread out over the 250-acre-property.

And despite nature’s fragrance, which drifts uncontrollably from the swine, cattle and poultry barns – hey, what’s a state fair without it? – the fair is doing its part to keep the air free of cigarette smoke, while pleasing those who must light up with

The biggest change, however, over the last five years has been the growth in what fair staffers refer to as the “north side,” once a quiet, neglected counterpart to the buzzing main drag co-anchored by the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand and the Pepsi Coliseum along the property’s south side and the Midway, which Davidson claims is the largest in the country. The north side is now home to the popular WFMS Free Stage, the 4-H Education Complex and Centennial Hall, which received a $7.5 million makeover in 2004, a 4-yearold, 3,400-square-foot 1800s-style barn in Pioneer Village and the Indiana DNR Building with its kid-friendly Fishin’ Pond.

“The change has been an evolution over time led by some great people at the top who realized that they had something that was popular with people and that they needed to invest back into the buildings to keep up with the times. Years ago we didn’t have the money or the infrastructure to put much on the north side.

Now, it’s just as busy up there as on the south side.”

Another huge – and somewhat risky – change this year is the addition of five days to the fair schedule. The first fairhat opened in 1852 at what is now Military Park in Downtown Indianapolis ran for three days. For years, it was a 10-day event before expanding to 12 in 1982. Now it will extend to 15 days, covering three weekends.

“Nobody really knows how that will affect things,” said Andy Klotz, the fair’s publicity and media relations director. “It’s been a couple of years in the planning, and we feel the timing is right.”

GETTING THERE The traditional mode of transportation is by automobile, but Hamilton County residents can take the greener road less traveled by train or bike. The WFMS FairTrain, run by the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville, leaves the Government Center Complex at 116th Street in Fishers daily every 90 minutes, beginning at 8:45 a.m. Purchase advance roundtrip tickets at Hamilton County Key Banks: $11 adults, $5 ages 3-12.

Bikers using the Fair’s Pedal and Park plan get a $1 discount on fair admission if they ride their way in on the Monon Trail and lock their bikes at the secured racks at 38th Street from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

CARMEL ‘HOME SWEET HOME’ TO BRITISH IMPORT PAUL EDMONDS Four years ago, the British company Paul worked for sent him to Indianapolis to set up the first plant outside England. They’d chosen Indianapolis because of its central location and great EDMONDS transportation system and had picked Greenwood as the site for its plant “because of low electric rates.”

Paul and his wife studied the entire area for a home and picked Carmel, even though it was a long drive. They soon fell in love with the city.

“Our two high school daughters were nervous, but they could not have been more warmly welcomed,” remembers Paul.

“Our girls wanted to go to EVERY game in EVERY sport. We couldn’t believe how much more participation and ATTENDANCE there is here. In England, even parents hardly went to game.”

s a native-born Indianapolis native and Carmel resident since 1977, I’ve run across what seems like hundreds of folks not native to Central Indiana who have “made a stand” and refused to leave here, whether they originally wanted to relocate here or not.

The theme has gone something like this: “My company moved me here from my home town and five years later they wanted me to leave. I left Danny the company rather than O’Malia leave Carmel.”

Recently I became friends with a friendly, outgoing native of Oxford, England named Paul Edmonds, who moved here four years ago to work for a company for which he’s no longer employed. And when Paul told me how badly he wants to stay here, it occurred to me it was time to comment on this phenomenon of “non-native Hoosiers who refuse to leave.”

Because Paul’s dad was in the British Royal Air Force, he has lived all over the world (England, Canada, Austria, Belgium, France, New Zealand, Greece, Nigeria, Canada ) and traveled the U.S. extensively.

Why / How Underwood said it’s just time for her to retire. And although retiring in the middle of the school year may sound bad, she said a December retirement will help the next superintendent transition into his or her new position because the 2010-2011 budget will already be finished and he or she will have six months to get to used to the district.

All schools have acquired new social studies textbooks, and teachers are being trained in the updated curriculum.

Jeff Swensson, assistant superintendent for curriculum instruction and assessment, said state law requires schools to update their social studies curriculum every six years – this is one of those years. “Knowledge in any subject area is always expanding,” he said.

The alternative program will be moving to a new location.

On the corner of Main and 4th streets, just west of Carmel High School.

The program will have more room to expand at its new location, Underwood said. The new location will be able to accommodate about 60 students, twice the number at the old location.

Schools are currently enrolling.

Underwood said the slower growth is understandable because of the struggling housing market. “The estimate was that we’d grow 275 students, I don’t know if we’ll reach that or not,” she said.

As of two weeks ago, 15,339 students were enrolled in the district.

Although this is an increase of about 200 students from last year, it is not as significant an increase as past years.

Having young children who have a strong grasp of language is great. Most of the time. Here’s an example of when it’s mildly frustrating: “Get your shoes on; we’re leaving in a couple of minutes.”

“How many is a couple?”

“Two.” “So we’re leaving in two minutes?”

“Yes. Two minutes. Please put on your shoes.”

“Can we have a few minutes instead of a couple?”

“Why?” “Because a few is more than two, and I want to finish playing dress up.”

This was my conversation with my 5-yearold daughter recently. Good times.

The distinction between a couple and a few is a fairly basic one that most people understand, hence being easy for a 5-yearold to master. A similar but apparently notso-easy-to-master distinction is that of the words between and among.

Simply put, between should be used only when comparing two items or groups of items:

The often-made error involving the two words is almost always the use of between instead of among. And I think the reason the error is made at all is people forget the word among exists.

Proper usage is important, though, because use of between indicates the presence of two things only. Think about this: If someone says, “We have to divide this candy bar between us,” that could be a pretty sweet deal. But if there are actually 12 people, they’ll be pretty disappointed to learn that the split has to be made among them.

And for anyone who may be wondering, among and amongst are interchangeable.

Oh, and it took 17 minutes to get out the door that day. Maybe several should have been the operative word.

INSPIRING WATERCOLORS ON LIBRARY ART WALL

Local watercolorist Rodney Reveal finds his artistic inspirations as far as Arizona and as close as his own backyard.

When he isn’t traveling the country photographing inspiring landscapes for future works, the retired Noblesville firefighter and his wife work to rehabilitate wildlife animals from their Arcadia home.

“We always have something around that we’re raising,” Reveal said. “When you do that, you have a connection, and we always photograph the daylights out of them.

“They become the subjects of a lot of paintings.”

Other subjects include landscapes and detailed depictions of places from his time growing up in Noblesville. From an old skating rink to a drive-in ice cream shop, Reveal said he tries to pick one place every year to feature in a painting.

Reveal said. “People come up to me and say, ‘My husband proposed to me there,’ or ‘I met my girlfriend there.’ There’s always a story.”

Reveal has his art featured in several galleries across the state, and works out of the Hamilton County Arts Center, home to the Hamilton County Artists’ Association. The non-profit organization teaches art classes for people of all ages and features about 65 local artists. Reveal teaches a watercolor class as part of his involvement with the association.

The month of August, however, is Reveal’s time to shine.

Reveal’s work is featured this month on the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Art Wall.

Between 20-30 pieces are on display for sale on the wall next to the children’s section at the library.

Reveal’s artwork has graced the wall in previous years, which he said has helped him sell paintings and make connections with possible future patrons.

Becky Bryenton, director of the library Art Wall, said the wall is beneficial for both the artists and the library.

“Many times we give people who have never sold or shown their art an opportunity to do so on the Art Wall,” Bryenton said.

The library claims 30 percent of all sales made off the Art Wall. The money goes toward library programming.

playing it safe?

ll people get stereotyped. For example, actors that do well sometimes cannot shake the role they have created to transform into another. They are remembered for the role they excelled at. Chefs can have the same issue. We get so comfortable; why mess with success?

I had hoped to be different. I continuously learn and experiment with new foods, techniques and base cuisines.

Chef Michael Throughout my Vlasich career, I have Culinary Explorer shaken off the rust and polished the new. Recently, I caught myself in this exact situation. Although cute on the surface, it provoked deep thoughts and inspired me to search and experiment even harder.

Twenty years ago I was a chef in Los Angeles at a beautiful high-profile hotel on the beach in Santa Monica. Many movie stars, dignitaries, music celebrities and government officials would stay there for the ambiance and food (at least that’s what I choose to believe).

One Sunday afternoon, I came home from a long day. My wife, in her final trimester of carrying our first child, asked me to make her something to eat. She was famished and stressed from the tribulations of pregnancy. I searched the entire kitchen and found some chicken, fresh asparagus, dry angel hair, breadcrumbs and canned mandarin oranges. I proceeded to create “pan-seared chicken and asparagus over angel hair with mandarin orange cream.” My wife immediately proclaimed it to be the best thing I had ever cooked.

Placing credibility on her statement, as I do for everything my wife proclaims, I decided to run it as a special the next day.

There it had the same results. Long story short; it became a permanent menu item.

Since then, over the course of my career, it has been on menus at every property and has been the best selling dish at all three

PAN-SEARED CHICKEN AND ASPARAGUS OVER ANGEL HAIR WITH MANDARIN ORANGE CREAM • 4 each chicken breasts crusted in parmesan basil breading • 3 tbsp. olive oil blend • ¾ # cooked angel hair (4 portions) • 1 bunch of asparagus blanched • 1 tbsp. minced Shallots • 1 cup white wine • 3 cans mandarin oranges (drained) • 1 pint heavy cream • 1 cup shredded parmesan In a sauce pot, place the shallots and white wine, reduce by 2/3’s.

Add the cream and reduce until sauce consistency. Add two cans of mandarin oranges into the cream sauce and 2/3 of the parmesan cheese, blending until sauce consistency. Once the sauce is almost finished, heat a sauté pan, add oil and then cook chicken breasts until finished. Heat the pasta and asparagus. Place on the plate, pour ½ the sauce over pasta, place the chicken on top, pour remaining sauce, place remaining oranges over chicken as a garnish and then sprinkle parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

From time to time, I tell the story of this dish, with all the staff suspecting it is another of the funny pranks that I am known to play. But, here’s where it gets funny. Over spring break this year, we went to LA, and visited my old hotel.

While there, we ran into a waitress I had worked with. We began to reminisce of 20 years ago, when she said, “Chef we miss you, but really we miss that chicken dish with the mandarin oranges.”

Do I really play it so safe? Will I only be remembered for a simple chicken dish after I am gone? Hopefully not. There’s more to life than cooking; or is there?

Creating seasonaility in outdoor spaces

H

ave you considered the seasonality of our homes and how we migrate between living spaces? Most spaces’ seasonal tenure is somewhat obvious.

We certainly enjoy our outdoor patios, decks and fire pits more frequently in favorable weather. But some outdoor spaces are extendable and can still be pretty compelling in the winter months. Friends in Wabash have a stunning backyard space somewhat secluded from harsh elements.

Their patios are protected by heavy woods and an ambitiously sized fireplace with massive storage area walls on the side. All of that serves to create a cocoon affect where the heat of the fire and a few stainless steel heating elements create a comRandy fortable area to converse, even on Sorrell mild winter days.

Outdoor lanais structures, like the feature photo, offer a bit of winter protection as well, especially with their creative modular heating mechanisms that multi-task as subtle water elements too. The ceiling helps trap the warmth and keep it localized for visitors to appreciate.

grow the juciest melons ever Watering and Care Melons need plenty of water while they are young, and regular deep watering is especially crucial during the first 3-4 weeks that the vines are growing in your garden.

That said, you can improve the flavor of the fruit if you don’t water as often as the fruit ripens. A good technique is to cut back on the water once the plants have begun to set fruit because overwatering dilutes the melon’s sugars and makes the flavor weaker and less sweet.

This is a fine line, because you never want the melons to dry out completely, or get too stressed for water, because when you do water again, or it rains, the ripening melons can split.

To give a steady supply of moisture, drip irrigation or soaker hoses are the best way, because you are watering the roots directly rather than soaking the leaves.

Harvesting Melons can be hard to tell if they are ripe, but here are some common techniques.

Watermelons: When ripe, the curled tendril at the stem end dries to brown and the underside of the melon turns yellow or cream-colored.

The melon will also give a flat, dead sound when thumped. Rinds of unripe watermelons have a nice shiny gloss; ripe melons lose that shine, so the rinds are drab. www.weekendgardener.net

Screaming can often be prevented from starting by simply answering the parrot when she calls to you, and letting the bird know when you are leaving and have returned. Short daily training sessions should begin ideally from the first day the bird is brought home.

Parrots respond to facial expressions and verbal praise. This type of positive reinforcement should be used when an appropriate response is given by the bird and no response should be given for incorrect responses. No aggression or punishment is involved in the training.

In fact, my next New Year’s resolution is going to be to obsess less about things I can’t control. If you can’t do anything about something, then there’s no point in worrying. WAIT a second! Those are exactly the kind of things I should worry about. If I agonize over things I can do something about, I’ll be a wreck trying to decide what action to take. But if I worry about things I have absolutely no control over, then I can just sit back without having to lift a finger. Gee, I wish I had thought about that before I needlessly stopped worrying about Y2K. I’m losing you, aren’t I? I’m not going to let that stress me out. Do you know why?

Because I could have done something about that. I could have made that last paragraph clearer, explained myself better.

Do you have any idea how much anxiety is caused by worrying about something you can actually do something about? I should be apprehensive about my retirement account, for example, because I feel I obligated to do some research, move my money around. It’s that pressure that’s putting me over the edge.

What, me worry?

No, instead I think I’ll worry about when the next tornado will be; if we’ll ever pay for Lucas Oil Stadium; if an asteroid will hit my house; if there will be Y3K problems; if leisure suits will come back.

I’m going to fret about all those things.

I may even lose some sleep over them. But one thing is certain: No matter how much I dwell on these matters, there’s not a

single thing I can do about changing anything. That takes off a lot of pressure.

Right now, some of my readers have given up on this column and have gone on to scan the obituaries. I can’t do a darn thing about that. So I think I’ll worry about it. I feel better already.

idea what I’m talking about? You’re experiencing anxiety because you’re still totally confused? You can’t do anything about this and you’re worried?

through the rigamarole with the cops and the insurance guys, and I’m calling THEM the fools.)

Most of the time, I figure whoever takes my stuff is taking it to convert into something they really need, such as drugs, although I have to wonder how high you can get with the proceeds from things that have been liberated from my possession in the past: garbage cans (really!), extremely pliable plastic lawn furniture that I was planning to throw away, an ashtray, a lantern and a truck radio. I’m not seeing a lot of money-making opportunity there. Well, maybe the radio. And who knows? Maybe there’s an ashtray collector out there who paid big money for mine, which I myself liberated from a motel in Cocoa Beach, Fla., on spring break in 1971 This latest case may be different, though, because they took the power cord as well as the mower and drill. Maybe this indicates they will be used instead of fenced.

In that case, I would ask you all to be on the lookout for itinerants asking to mow your lawns the new-fangled electric way, or if you have anything that might need to have a hole drilled into it. If you see them, call the cops, and then grab hold of that extension cord. I already got a replacement mower and drill, but I forgot to get a new cord, and my grass is getting kind of tall.

nce again I find myself at odds with one or more of my fellow citizens over a concept I like to call “the private ownership of movable property.”

Simply put, I am in favor of it, and by the look of things, quite a few of my neighbors are not, as they chose to remind me the other day.

This time, my personal holdings have been reduced by one electric lawnmower, one power drill, and one Mike Redmond 100-foot extension Humor cord on a reel. The lawnmower and drill were fairly new – in fact, I think I used the drill all of twice.

The extension cord was old. And wouldn’t you know it, that’s the one that upset me the most. We had a lot of good times together, that cord and I. But I digress.

These items used to be stored in my garage, which I have come to find developed an inexplicable glitch in one of its doors Friday night. That glitch caused someone (not me, and I won’t name names, either, because this person feels bad enough already) to think the door had closed when it had not. In fact, it just went down to the bottom of the track and then rebounded back into the open position.

At any rate, the open door was more than enough invitation for person or persons unknown to come in and help themselves to my mower and drill.

What’s kind of funny is what these persons (In my mind’s eye, I see persons, so I’ll go with that) passed up to get there: a freezer full of food, power tools worth far more than the drill, motorcycle saddles worth as much as the drill and mower combined, a motorcycle to go with them, and so on. The fools.

Catherine Koziura, 60, Carmel, passed away peacefully in her home July 23 after a short and very brave battle with cancer.

Catherine was born in Hollywood, Fla. on Oct. 6, 1948, but lived the majority of her life in the Indianapolis area. She is survived by her daughter Amanda Koziura Quick (Greg); her parents Frank and Lewella Koziura; her two brothers Larry (Karen) Koziura and Charlie Koziura (Gwen); as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Following a car accident in 1975, Catherine had been paralyzed for the past
