Ducks still a problem at pool

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com A little more than a year ago, the City of Carmel reopened the Veteran’s Memorial reflecting pool at City eNVIRONMENT Center after spending nearly half a million dollars to repair damages. Since then, the city has been dealing with ducks nesting in the pond and leaving waste on the sidewalk that costs tens of thousands of dollars to clean up.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the city hired a private company to remove the ducks and relocate the nests in a new location. Once the ducks were moved, the city removed the “duck ramps” in the pool, which help the ducklings exit the pool so they don’t drown.

Well, the ducks are back. But not as many.

“If you miss a nest, then you’ll get five or six ducks that are still there,” Brainard said.

“So we put the ramps back up.”

Brainard said the duck waste can be toxic and a public health concern. It’s costly to clean up, he said, and it was becoming a nec-

“We’re trying to encourage them to nest in a more appropriate location,” he said.

City naturalizing area along 116th St.

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com City Councilor Jeff Worrell is telling his constituents to be patient eNVIRONMENT when it comes to an area full of weeds near the Brookshire Golf Course along 116th street.

He said he received calls from neighbors complaining that the area was unsightly and not pleasing to the eye with tall weeds growing such as Canadian Thistle. One neighbor, Stacy Hicks, brought it to Worrell’s attention.

“She rightly asked if something could be done,” Worrell said.

Worrell met with Hicks, along with City Forester Daren Mindham and Brookshire Golf Course Supt. Bob Higgins, to find out that the area was part of the city’s efforts to create a cost-effective natural green space border that doesn’t need bi-weekly mowing with a mature tree canopy covering the area.

“What we learned is that there is a concerted effort to choose certain areas and naturalize them by letting them generate a tree canopy that cannot support tall grass or weeds,” Worrell said. “This is a multi-year project, and a less than perfect visual result occurs during the early years. However, a good outcome can be witnessed at the southwest

Worrell said he understands the neighbors’ initial concerns, and he felt the same way before he learned more.

“I was disappointed when I went by it, but I wasn’t educated,” he said. “So it looks very unkempt, but it’s actually an area that’s trying to be naturalized. It might be unsightly for five years, but once the tree canopy is built up you won’t have to mow it as much, and it’ll look great.”

Grant will make CCHS collection more accessible

Katherine Dill is convinced a grant will help dramatically increase the public’s access to the Carmel Clay Historical Society’s collection.

CCHS was awarded a history $26,000 Heritage Support Grant from the Indiana Historical Society, made possible by the Lilly Endowment. The grant will allow CCHS to complete a four-phase plan to inventory, organize, digitize and provide public access to the collection.

Dill, who was the CCHS executive director from 2010 to 2014, has returned to manage the grant in a Dill paid position. She said her familiarity with the collection should help with the process.

“The funds will be used to hire staff to catalog and digitize our collection,” Dill said. “Right now, it is well organized in acid-free folders and boxes, and there is a rough inventory of the collection noting generally what we have and where it is located.”

Dill said, for example, all the newspapers are in flat boxes, organized by date. The Carmel High School collection is in four boxes on the bottom shelf in the main research room.

However, she said much of the meat of the collection is not available.

“We don't know who is mentioned in letters or diaries or the subjects of those manuscripts,” Dill said. “We can't easily pull up every photograph of the Carmel Friends Church, Main Street or Jane Reiman, our first female mayor. Cataloging the collection will change all that. Staff will input the collection into PastPerfect, which is a special computer program we use. It allows us to search for individuals, places, businesses or events in Carmel's history.”

The staff will digitize manuscripts and photographs.

“When this project is complete, the bulk of our collection will be accessible online,” Dill said. “Elementary school teachers can bring historic photos of Carmel into their classroom.

High school teachers can bring 19th century primary documents about Carmel into their lesson plans. People who grew up here or whose family members lived here can find pictures of family, friends or residences from anywhere in the country — all from their computers.”

Kids learn to sew at studio

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Valerie Salmon believes sewing is still a necessary skill that kids need to learn.

So, she began teaching education sewing classes for kids out of her Village of West Clay home, and she moved into a commercial space this year.

“It’s a sewing school for kids,” Salmon said of her business, A Sewing Studio, 12775 Horseferry Rd. Suite 140. “Basically, schools don’t have Home Ec like they used to when I was in school, and that was one of my favorite classes. No one is teaching kids how to sew these days, so that’s how I got started. I have my own daughter, and I realized there was a need for it.”

Salmon said since expanding to the commercial space, still in the Village of West Clay, she has had more opportunity for growth.

“I think it’s making a comeback, even adults are interested in learning how to sew. A lot of the moms really want their children to learn,” she said. “It’s a life skill, and lots of these kids are growing up not even knowing how to sew a button. It’s great if they can put together a clothing item. It’s something they’ll know the rest of their life. Instead of video games 10

or watching TV, the kids are actually learning something, being productive and learning to create something by hand and being proud of it.”

Usually, kids use sewing machines in Salmon’s classes, but she teaches them how to hand-sew as well.

“They’re just hooked. They love it,” she said.

“The beginners have never used the sewing machine. They end up signing up for an entire school year. Some students I’ve had with me for years.”

Historic bridge placement stalls

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com A bridge-placement project by Hamilton County Parks and Recreation has been put on hold after technical iscounty sues arose during the bridge’s scheduled placement July 20.

But the bridge isn’t new. It’s historic, from 1898, and previously served as the No. 113 bridge in Washington County. At that, it’s interesting, but for Indiana and Hamilton County it’s also unique.

The 149-foot bridge is the only one of its kind in the state and is an example of Triple-Intersection-Warren-Through-Truss construction.

The bridge was rescued more than 15 years ago, and since it’s been in Hamilton County’s hands, it’s had big plans associated with it – to be set in place over the White River, along the opposing banks of White River Campground and Strawtown Koteewi Park in Noblesville.

“The operation to install Washington 113, which began in the fall of 2015, will require the critical choreography of two massive cranes, the first of which will remain on the west bank throughout the entire project, while the second crane will be moved to the opposite

bank during the installation,” said Don Nicholls, resource development specialist for Hamilton County Parks and Recreation.

However, the plan, set to take 12-plus hours to install on July 20, was delayed and later postponed after one of the cranes experienced unforeseen issues, and efforts to repair the crane, which Nicholls said lasted late into the evening, were unsuccessful.

“As of this morning (July 21), the department was notified that continuation of the installation is yet to be determined, due to the uncertainty of the arrival of parts needed for repair of the crane,” Nicholls said.

A new date and time for the bridge’s installation has not yet been set.

Keady breaks own no-politics rule

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Through most of his life in the public eye, former Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady had abided by a rule: Don’t chamber discuss politics or religion.

Lately, he can’t help himself. At the Westfield Chamber of Commerce luncheon July 21 at The Bridgewater Club in Carmel, Keady said he was struggling with what had to be a highly unscientific presidential poll he had seen.

“If somebody gets elected I don’t like, I may move to Ireland,” Keady joked. “This morning, I panicked. I looked at my phone and it said this presidential candidate has 75 percent of the votes if we elected today, and the one I like has 25 percent. What happened overnight?

How did we lose so many votes? I’m struggling with that right now. We need a president who can turn this country around. I shouldn’t have gotten into that. Shut up, Keady.”

Keady never mentioned Donald Trump by name to the audience, but he had made news when he joined Trump in campaign stops in Carmel and South Bend in May. “Trump is a great guy,” Keady said afterwards. “He wants to be president for the right

reasons. He wants to help America get back on its feet again. I enjoy his attitude toward life. I just think this country is so screwed up right now. We need help.”

Keady, 80, said his wife, Kathleen, told Trump 10 years ago he ought to run for president.

Keady said the two things he always found important in motivating people were honesty and enthusiasm.

“If you are a phony, people can see right through that,” Keady said. “You’ve got to be enthusiastic about your job. I always loved going to work at Purdue.”

“He introduced me to achievement the game,” said Katie, who will be a Carmel Middle School eighth grader in August. “We always play together when we practice, and it’s fun.”

Katie, who turns 13 Aug. 29, will compete in the age 12 division of the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship Aug. 4-6 for the second consecutive year at Pinehurst, N.C. She qualified by winning the Indianapolis-area fall tour. Katie and Dave captured the U.S. Kids Golf World Parent-Child tournament title, a scramble tournament where parent and child alternate tee shots, in July 2015 and competed again in this year’s tournament on Aug 1.

Dave and Katie said they had a blast en route to winning last year.

“We played a great golf course and spent time together,” said Dave, who golfed one season (1988-89) for Purdue University. “We both have a passion for golf, and to be able to play together and compete together is something that I never had the opportunity to do with my daughter. To have that opportunity when we

went out, that was awesome.”

Dave said he is blessed they have a shared activity that comes naturally.

“We’re always egging each other on to get out to the golf course and play a round together,” said Dave, who added that his daughter frequently comes close to beating him.

Mother, Kelly, doesn’t share their passion.

“I’m more of the soccer mom,” Kelly said.

“My son (Austin, 10) plays travel soccer, so they’re out golfing, and I’m taking him to soccer. I love watching Katie play, but I get nervous. It’s great to see her blossoming.”

Katie, who golfs at Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club, has been practicing every day the past few weeks.

“I just hope to have fun and shoot my best,” Katie said.

Swimmer to honor mother at summer Olympics news@currentincarmel.com

A Carmel Swim Club member is going for gold in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games as she represents the Repubprofile lic of Seychelles.

Alexus (Lexi) Laird, 23, has dual citizenship in the U.S. and the Seychelles, a small nation of islands off the east coast of Africa.

Laird went to high school in Kokomo, Ind., and went on to attend the IU Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis, where she was a captain for IUPUI’s NCAA Division I swimming and diving team.

Laird graduated in December with double majors in accounting and finance and swims with the Carmel Swim Club.

It was several years ago when one of Laird’s coaches put the idea in her head that she could potentially swim for her mother’s home nation. Her mother was born and raised in Seychelles, and after moving to Germany, she met and married Laird’s father, a member of the U.S. Air Force. Laird said when she swims for Seychelles, where many members of her family still live, she swims for her mother, who died when she was only 4 years old.

“I’m able to connect with her this way. My mother passed away when I was very young, and when you’re young, you don’t remember a lot of things. Swimming has brought me closer with my family there (in Seychelles), and they’ve become a big part of my life,” Laird said. “I’ve heard so many stories about my mother. She was a sweet woman and so caring.

“The girls who I swim with in Seychelles, many of their mothers were friends with my mom. To be able to honor her in this way is awesome,” she added.

Laird’s swimming career with the Seychelles National Team has taken off over the

past couple years. She’s set multiple national records for the small island nation in backstroke and freestyle events. She’ll swim the 100-yard backstroke in Rio. Laird said, above all, the ability to reconnect with family in Seychelles, especially those who knew her mother well, has meant so much. The most important part, she said, has been honoring her mother’s memory and learning more about her mom from those who were close to her growing up.

“This is a chance of a lifetime,” she said.

“I’ll never forget the moments I shared with those closest to my mom, and I can’t wait for the moments at the Olympic Games.”

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It all started about 18 years ago, when a young child who couldn’t even swim without assistance would spend hours jumping off of the diving board at his cover story neighborhood pool in Noblesville.

Now that kid – Steele Johnson – is in Rio de Janeiro, where he’ll be throwing himself off a much higher platform with much bigger stakes. Johnson, 20, who moved to Carmel in 2002, is competing in the Olympic games as a 10-meter platform diver in the individual competition and with synchronized diving partner David Boudia, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist and fellow Hamilton County native.

“The moment I qualified it was like 12 years of work finally came together,” said Johnson, the first person from Carmel to make an Olympic team. “It was kind of a cool moment.

Definitely not how four years ago I would’ve envisioned this going down, but it’s a lot sweeter than I was expecting it to be.”

Climbing to the top Johnson’s unlikely road to Rio began in Hamilton County. He was born the second of three children to Bill and Jill Johnson, neither of whom had any experience diving. But – as they saw at a very young age – Steele was a natural.

“We knew nothing about diving except we had this kid we couldn’t get off of the neighborhood pool diving board,” said Jill Johnson, who admits to having “an extreme fear of heights and falling.”

The family soon signed Steele up for diving lessons, and a fun diversion eventually turned into a serious pursuit when top-level coaches – including one who had worked with Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis – began to take notice.

Steele worked his way to the top of the junior, and then senior, national diving ranks, pulling out of Carmel Clay Schools to home-

school so he could have the flexibility to train at IUPUI. At age 10, he would catch a ride to practice from Boudia, who was 17 at the time, along with former Olympian Mary Beth Dunnichay, then 13.

After Steele graduated from middle school, his parents asked him if he’d like to cut back on the diving and attend Carmel High School, with his brother, Race.

“He was very happy with what he was doing. He loved diving, and it was his passion,” said Jill, who noted the family moved to Carmel for the school district. “To be a diver you do have to be kind of a lone wolf and like your independence, so it was a good fit for him.”

Steele instead took high school classes online through Laurel Springs School, then went to Purdue on a diving scholarship. He competed on the team as a freshman and red-shirted this past year to focus on Olympic training.

Steele said he began to see the Olympics as a real possibility about four years ago as he watched Boudia finish first in the 2012 London Olympics.

“I just remember everyone losing their minds when David won gold,” Steele said. “It definitely inspired me to want to work as hard as I could starting that day so I could at least get on the 2016 Olympic team.”

Boudia, a Purdue University graduate who is going to his third Olympic games, said Steele has helped bring a fresh perspective to Rio. “It’s cool to be able to be with a first-time Olympian, to see the excitement,” Boudia said.

The divers describe their relationship like brothers. Steele said Boudia has not only made him a better diver but has set an example as a man of faith, as well.

“The best lesson is to realize that diving is not my life. My identity is rooted in Christ.

It’s not rooted in whether or not I make the Olympics,” Johnson said. “(David has) inspired me to take diving with a grain of salt, because there’s so much more to life than doing flips.”

‘So blessed’ As the possibility of Steele heading to the Olympics became a possibility, the Johnson family wondered if they would be able travel to Rio to show their support from the stands.

Thanks to the support of the Carmel community and beyond, the entire family is heading to Brazil. A family friend set up a GoFundMe page, which raised $20,760 for travel in addition to gifts from others in the area.

Bill, who is self-employed as a real estate appraiser, and Jill, who works for an international business college, said many people

As if twisting and turning through the air after jumping off a three-story platform as the world watches isn’t scary enough, this year’s Olympic games have brought added concerns. Rio has one of the highest murder rates in the world, and it is in the heart of the Zika virus outbreak, which has led some Olympians to bow out.

That thought never crossed Steele Johnson’s mind.

In fact, he has visited Brazil twice in the last year, and he said it’s among his favorite places.

“I wasn’t worried either time. I just took bug spray and I got the immunizations that I needed,” he said. “We were preparing the best we could, but I just went down, had an awesome time and really enjoyed Brazil.” assume that everyone who lives in Carmel is well off, but that is not the case.

“Diving has put our family into debt, and we don’t regret it, but we are now in a position where we are being so blessed by the community,” Jill said.

Bill, Jill and their daughter, CHS incoming senior Hollyn, will be in Rio for all of Steele’s events, but their son, Race, will only be present for the synchronized diving competition. He plans to catch a plane back to the U.S. just a few hours after the event to rejoin his teammates on the Purdue football team for training camp.

“It’s nice for us all to be together at least for one event,” Bill said. “This is a team effort, and it’s special, and of course the folks that have donated and made this all happen for us – I can’t even comment, I’m choking back tears.”

This Democratic National Convention was one for the ages. We don’t recall seeing anything quite like it. Consider: Email scandal (Part Deux), party chairwoman removed but taken in by “the campaign,” protests, marches, shout-downs, tears, anger, a thorough Bern-ing of Donald Trump and a history-making presidential nominee named Hillary Rodham Clinton. On the whole, just when you thought the Republicans had the corner on The Clown Show, the Democrats flooded Philadelphia to grab a share. Oh, and the accumulative torrent of emails with “urgent” news (read: stabs) from both camps are enough to choke a giraffe. And now that it has ended and the campaigning begins anew, we urge you to watch carefully with respect to which candidate steps over the truth line the most. Prediction: It will end in a dead heat. We will be using factcheck. org now more than ever, and we believe you should, too.

••• Polling is an interesting animal. While some of it provides “Yes!” moments for one side or the other, bear in mind that each poll carries a plus-minus of a certain number of points. Therefore, Trump supporters ought not strike up the band if a poll shows him up five points with a plus-minus of four. Clinton could get a decent bump in polling.

Your large is my small Commentary by Terry Anker Does Merriam-Webster have a team of people in a dim basement somewhere determining when a generally accepted word’s definition must be replaced by one that is new and improved? Does a tweet from Kanye resurrect Babel? Or is it companies like 7-Eleven leading the charge by eliminating the pesky, if clear, small, medium and large monikers from its soft drinks instead replacing them with Big Gulps, Super Big Gulps and Double Gulps. Ranging from 30 to 50 ounces, these behemoths can account for half of a healthy adult’s daily caloric intake. Even McDonald’s starts its small at 16 ounces with a large hitting the Big Gulp’s 30 ounces.

Perhaps we do the same with many of our professions. The meaning of the words politician, journalist and educator are a bit looser today than they were not that long ago. Moreover, Newspeak and title creep has led to scores of people occupying the “c” suite, whatever that might be, to have the word “chief” affixed in front of an other-

wise mundane job description.

Recently “real” CNN journalist, Christiane Amanpour, was a guest on a “faux” news interview program of a comedy television channel. The host asked her to help him understand the nuance of integrity in reporting. Ms. Amanpour matter-of-factly responded that she no longer reports in a traditional sense because to show alternate points of view to the audience might allow some viewers to come to the wrong conclusion.

Therefore, instead, she simply deciphers the “truth” and reports only those things divined to be worthy of retelling. The studio audience, prompted by flashing “applause” signs, roundly approved of Ms. Amanpour’s predigesting of the tough bits of thought from a complex world. My truth is now your truth.

And, your large is now my small.

I spend a great deal of time judging other parents. I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help myself. Criticizing their humor decisions and actions makes me feel better about my own insecurities. My latest “issue” with certain moms and dads regards football. With all that is known about head injuries, I cannot understand why parents allow their boys to play, even at the pee wee level, and especially when there are less potentiallybrain-damaging sports out there. And the coaches are just as culpable. Forcing kids back on the field after sustaining hard hits, shooting them up with cortisone to mask the pain . . . I drooled over Paul Walker in Varsity Blues; I know what happens in the locker room!

Anyway, the other day I overheard two of my kids comparing their bodily ailments.

Tiny Dancer was describing the acute pain she experiences in her right knee whenever she pliés, while XC Runner was trying to one up her with his probable shin splits.

This was my first thought: “Suck it up, people! Nobody likes a wuss!”

And then I realized: I am just as bad as the football parents.

How often have I openly expressed disapproval when one of my kids bails on a practice or game because of injury or sickness? Gasp! The answer wasn’t just “frequently” but “usually.” And the few times I do manage to miraculously suppress my initial response, I’m still thinking to myself “Quit your complaining and get out there.”

What is wrong with me? When I consider the situation rationally, I know the right call is to listen to my children and ensure they receive the necessary treatment. But my gut reaction firmly steers me in the opposite direction. Whether I learned it as an athlete growing up or in my brief stint in the military, somewhere along the way weakness of body became equated with weakness of person. And that is simply unacceptable. Shame on me!

So my sincere apologies to all the football parents I’ve badmouthed recently. It seems I also have some “issues” to work on. Peace out.

Editor, I am disappointed in your article on Page 20 of the July 26 issue of Current entitled, “Clinton lacking regard for women.” The only instance you refer to is the Benghazi strike and reiterate the “emotional” speech by Ms. Smith at the RNC. Throughout the past year and a half, all I’ve heard from the tea partiers is nothing but negative about Hillary Clinton and Mr. Trump’s opponents, and it turns me off. The Republicans wasted an excessive amount of tax money on an investigation of Hillary Clinton and found nothing they could prosecute her for. Since they didn’t get the desired results they wanted, they want to do it again.

I’m sure I won’t be able to hold my breath long enough for a negative article written about Mr. Donald Trump to appear in Current.

The new governor nominee will lose thanks to Mike Pence. He will be looked at as Pence’s partner in crime. No one liked what Pence did to the LGBT community except the religious zealots. No one liked how he treated Glenda Ritz, the new superintendent of education who beat out the favored son, Tony Bennett, who was crooked as the day is long. Pence decided that women are too stupid to know what is best for their own health care and OB/GYN care, so he has made it extremely difficult for women to have abortions. Thank the Lord a federal judge is reviewing his decision.

Hillary Clinton is not perfect, but her campaign has been much more positive toward the American people than Mr. Trump’s. She is a champion for womens’ rights and would do a much better job in the Oval Office than some TV personality with the most obnoxious, foul mouth hating person ever.

Where’s Amy attends Songbook Masterclass with Feinstein Commentary by Amy Pauszek For two days, the Palladium opened its doors to the public and invited guests to experience the top 10, all-star students in their final journey in hopes of music becoming the 2016 Songbook Ambassador.

Where’s Amy was thrilled to meet up with Songbook Academy artistic director, founder and five-time Grammy-nominated vocalist/pianist Michael Feinstein, along with television writer and producer, Marc Cherry, creator of the ABC comedy-drama series “Desperate Housewives” and the Lifetime comedydrama series “Devious Maids” at the 2016 Masterclass workshops. Forty high-school singers from across the nation were chosen to have the opportunity to perform on the Palladium stage and attend workshops conducted by Feinstein and Cherry.

Many guests who attended the two-day, free public Masterclass workshops told me they were so impressed with the talented, young artists that they left wondering who would take the top prize and win on July 23. What a special day I personally will never forget because after a special photo shoot with Feinstein and Cherry, the two serenaded me with “Once in Love with Amy,” and it’s safe to say I left with a huge grin and memory that I will never forget.

Carmel resident, Al Hopkins, has had his artwork accepted into the Hoosier Salon’s 92nd Annual Exhibition. His oil painting, “Heirloom Still art Life” will be on display in the exhibit, which is open to the public from now until Sept.

24 at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St. Indianapolis.

Hopkins is a lifelong resident of Indiana. He is a Hopkins self-taught artist who is best known for his still-life painting. Hopkins work has been juried, accepted and won awards numerous times in the Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition and Indiana Heritage Art Annual Exhibition. Hopkins works from his studio in Carmel and his paintings are held in both private and public collections.

Grilled Ginger Salmon and Grape Rice Bowl Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Servings: 4 Ingredients: • 4 boneless salmon fillets (3 ounces each), skin on.

• Kosher salt.

• Freshly ground black pepper.

• 2 tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar.

• 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger.

• 1 tablespoon honey.

• 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil.

• 2 cups mixed green and red California grapes, halved.

• 2 scallions, thinly sliced diagonally.

• 4 cups hot cooked brown rice.

• 2 cups finely shredded green cabbage.

• 1 teaspoon sesame seeds.

• Reduced sodium soy sauce (optional).

Directions: Heat grill to high and oil grates.

Sprinkle salmon with salt and pepper; set aside.

In small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, ginger, honey and olive oil, and bring to simmer over high heat. Stir in grapes and scallions, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside off heat.

Grill salmon, skin side up, 5-6 minutes. Turn and grill another 2-3 minutes, or until salmon reaches desired doneness.

Divide rice among four bowls and top with cabbage and salmon. Spoon grape mixture over top and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Serve with soy sauce, if desired.

Antique collectors to gather

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com John Ferguson has been a member of National Association Breweriana Advertising’s board for approximately 30 hobbies years. In his second year as NABA president, the Indianapolis resident is seeing the national convention come to his area for the first time.

The 45th annual NABA’s free public trade show will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Renaissance Hotel, 11925 N. Meridian St., Carmel. The show caps the convention, which starts Aug. 2.

“It’s a nice way to show the people what the hobby is all about, too,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson’s interest started when he was trying to write a master’s thesis in the 1970s on the Indianapolis brewing industry. He soon learned there wasn’t much information.

“Since there hadn’t been any breweries operating in Indianapolis since 1948, no one remembered much,” Ferguson said. “I started finding all these collectibles. Initially, I started collecting pre-Prohibition etched beer glasses.

They were real thin glasses that the breweries gave out. They usually had a logo, or the name of the brewery or a picture of a factory.”

“I’ve been a collector of beer signs, beer cans and everything since Billy Beer came out in 1977,” Viering said.

Made by Falls City Brewing Company, Billy Beer was promoted by Billy Carter. Billy Carter was the younger brother of President Jimmy Carter, who was elected in 1976. The company stopped producing the beer less than a year later.

“A lot of us concentrate on a certain area because you can’t collect it all,” Viering said.

Carmel residents lead Irish band

Pictus was supposed to just be an opening act for its sister band, Mother Grove.

But when the primal Irish band music – equipped with drums, bagpipes and dancing – began growing in popularity, way beyond what founders Brad Sprauer, Lauren Berry and John Holland expected, it became their main focus.

“With no lyrics and just two instruments, the fact it moves people to the point it does is the coolest thing. It’s emotion made tangible,” Sprauer said.

Sprauer is on drums, his wife, Berry, is the Irish dancer, and Holland is on bagpipes.

Sprauer describes the music as primal. Yet despite the pounding music and the appearance, it’s a family-friendly band.

Sprauer and Holland’s original band, Mother Grove, is a bit calmer and plays at local bars such as Brockway Pub, Danny Boy Beer Works, Nine Irish Brothers in Indianapolis and others.

“I never had any intention for Mother Grove ever being a backseat, but it was just serendipitous,” Sprauer said. “Pictus’ music is pounding rhythms and amazing bagpipes and

it just moves people whether they’re Scottish or Irish or not. It’s just primal music punching you in your ancestry.”

With its pounding music, Pictus is typically found at Renaissance festivals. However, with Sprauer and Berry both residents of Carmel, their plans are to play local. In addition to the music, Sprauer tells historical stories that he writes and says are a great addition. With the historical aspect, Pictus is sometimes found in schools.

“We would love to play local,” Sprauer said.

“Everywhere we play, people love it and we just need the opportunity to play. We travel so much … I’d love to do local stuff like (schools).”

Beer, music combine at Nickel Plate

By Sam Elliott • sam@youarecurrent.com Two popular Fishers events are joining forces in an effort to promote enjoying some food and drinks while listening fundraiser to live music outdoors for a good cause.

The Fishers Rotary Club’s Fishers on Tap summer fundraiser returns Aug. 5. It will run from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Fishers Nickel Plate Amphitheater, and include a collection of local craft breweries and restaurants with samples for guests.

“We’re hoping to have about 14 brewers.

We’ll try to get a few more in, and we should have somewhere between 500 and 800 guests that night,” event co-chair Bill Jerrow said. “It’s roped off for our event because of the alcohol and age restriction, but it’s right there with the concert, too.”

The city’s AMP’D After Dark summer concert series has drawn record numbers to its shows this season, with Torn scheduled as the headliner beginning at 9 p.m. Aug. 5.

“The hope is that we’ll lift each others’ events up together and make it a little more fun and interesting and become kind of a special version of the concert series and our event as well,” Jerrow said. “We’re very grateful to the

The Fishers Rotary Club will use the funds raised through Fishers on Tap for its next cycle of donations to local charitable organizations.

“Our club has two donation cycles; one in the fall and one in the spring. The funds from this event will support the October donation cycle, and then we’ve got our winter event in February to support the spring donation cycle,” Jerrow said. “We usually give away $10,000 per cycle.”

Should I see a specialist?

Commentary by Christopher DiPiro, MD People often wonder whether they should see a specialist for medical concerns. While some health insurfamily medicine ance plans require a referral to see a specialist, regardless of coverage terms, your primary-care doctor is usually in the best position to help set the course. This includes recommending consultations with specialists.

Holistic care through an ongoing partnership. Because your primary care doctor sees you regularly and knows your medical history, he or she is the ideal partner to help manage all of your healthcare needs. With a big-picture approach, your PCP not only completes your annual physical exam, but recommends routine tests, keeps track of your medications, and ensures you’re up to date on screenings and preventive care. If specific medical issues develop, your doctor can take appropriate steps, which may include ordering preliminary tests to help determine if seeing a specialist is in your best interest.

Quality healthcare management for less. While there’s a misconception that some

diagnosed health issues, including chronic diseases, require a specialist, the reality is that many health conditions can be effectively managed by your primary care physician at a lower cost.

Carmel-based Gumbo Growth LLC is taking its first step in expanding J. Gumbo’s restaurants.

Expansion “We acquired the rights to franchise and develop the concept in May 2015,” Gumbo Growth president Bill Church said.

The company’s first sold J. Gumbo’s opened in Kalamazoo, Mich., Aug. 1. The next opening will be Aug. 7 in Cranberry Township, Pa. The other three sold franchises will be in New Mexico, Ohio Church and North Carolina.

“Those five are in different stages of opening,” said Church, who hopes to sell franchises in the Indianapolis area.

Carmel resident Church’s business partner Alan Zukerman serves as the chairman.

The concept, featuring New Orleans-style food, was created by Billy Fox, who is still involved in the manufacturing and processing.

“We came across the concept, we liked it,” Church said. “We felt it fit the mold of what is happening today in the fast casual concept.

The menu is extremely simplistic for both the

customer and the franchise operator. It has a low cost of entry for the franchisee, so that was attractive to Alan and myself.”

A different group had franchised the concept previously, Church said. Included in that group is a J. Gumbo’s in Fishers.

“There will be a slightly different look, we have some richer colors,” Church said. “Whereas the majority of the stores are open, the food is not displayed to the customer. We’ll have the food on display as the customer comes down the line so they see the product and choose their entree.

We feel like customers want Zukerman to see what they’re buying.”

Zukerman said they have helped other companies franchise.

“Bill and I have been associated with over 40 different restaurant concepts over our careers with the marketing and operation side of the business,” Zukerman said. “In the last six months we’ve sold the rights to five. To be honest, we haven’t even started marketing the concept, which we’ll soon start doing on a more accelerated basis.”

Zukerman and Church own eight Papa John’s franchises, seven in Central Indiana.

Skincare spot now open

The 2003 Carmel High School graduate didn’t know what she wanted new biz to do after high school, so when her mother suggested skincare, she decided to give it a try. She hasn’t looked back since.

“All these years later, I still love it,” she said.

“It’s a small obsession because I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love making people feel better and seeing how they feel and look afterwards.”

Ernstberger attended Honors Beauty College to become an esthetician, and she opened her business, Megan Danielle Skincare, in the Carmel City Center this summer. She offers facials, peels, waxing and more.

“I do a lot of custom facials depending on what’s going on with the skin at the moment, and I decide then and there what best for that particular day,” she said.

Ernstberger has never had her own business before, but she has worked in various day spas around the Indianapolis area.

The relaxation and the trust and the relationships you build with the clients … there’s a lot that goes into it.”

Blueprint for Improvement: 1940s bathroom revitalization Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background info: The homeowners of this 1940s bungalow near downtown Noblesville have slowly updated the home to fit their needs but also maintain the style of the original design intent.

After updating the kitchen and dining room to suit the needs of their large family, they decided it was time for a more functional, updated master bathroom. Focusing on these two areas of the home are a great way to add value and function for eventual resale.

Before problems: The master bathroom was original to the home, and therefore, aesthetically, it needed an update. Every zone of the bathroom was crammed into a small space next to the other.

The homeowners even had to squeeze between the console sink and the corner of the shower to get to the toilet.

After solutions:

The goal was to create more space and function in the master bath while adhering to the 1940s motif of the home.

1. A small closet adjacent to the master bath was removed to allow for more functional space planning. The toilet moved to the former closet space, which allowed for other changes.

2. The small shower was relocated to the former sink area.

This allowed for the shower footprint to be expanded, and the extended length allowed for the shower to be designed with no door.

3. Tile details were the showstopper of this bathroom! This tile also framed out the beautiful new glass block that replaced the old casement window. Continuing with the classic finishes, the plumbing and lighting fixtures, accessories, and even the electrical covers, were all finished in polished chrome.

4. To create needed storage, a custom built-in cabinet was recessed into the adjacent wall to save space and provide convenient access.

5. To make up for the lost storage, an additional closet was added to the bedroom footprint.

Maintaining a healthy weight for your body structure is crucial for your knees, hips and back. Being overweight creates the possibility of diabetes and heart disease.

A healthy attitude and positive outlook can also create a happier aging process.

Commentary by Don Knebel The tomb of I’timád-ud-Daulah in Agra, considered a “draft of the Taj Mahal,” is one of the most beautiful travel structures in India.

I’timád-ud-Daulah (“Pillar of the State”) was born in Iran as Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Seeking a better life, Beg took his young daughter, later known as Noor Jahan, to India, where he became an important member of the court of Akbar, the great Mughal emperor. Noor Jahan, said to have been the most beautiful woman in India, became highly educated and cultured. While married to a soldier, she caught the fancy of Jahangir, Akbar’s son. Recalling the story of David and Bathsheba, when Jahangir became emperor upon the death of his father, Noor Jahan’s husband was killed in battle and Jahangir then married the object of his desire. Noor Jahan, Jahangir’s favorite wife, dominated her weak husband, becoming the “power behind the curtain” during the glory days of the Mughal Empire.

When I’timád-ud-Daulah died in 1622, his daughter ordered the construction of an elaborate tomb for him and her mother along the banks of the Yamuna River.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Centers.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.
