Around town Artichoke Designs to join Chateau Design Center COMMUNITY

At the end of August, Artichoke Designs will have a new home, and Bob and Brynn Moore, owners of the Chateau Design Center, will have a new partner.

The full-service interior decorating company, which has operated on the Southeast corner of Range Line Road and Main Street in downtown Carmel for the last seven years, is forming a “synergistic partnership” with the Chateau Design Center, 301 E. Carmel Dr., according to Artichoke owner Vicky Earley.

“We worked on a project together, and found that our vision was so similar, our approach to design … the way with interact with clients was symbiotic.”

Chateau co-owner Bob Moore said he’s excited for Artichoke to come fully onboard, expected to happen.

“We think the synergies are wonderful,” Moore said. “We’ve worked with Artichoke on some dream homes that have worked out beautifully. We believe that, working together, we can grow both of the businesses and serve our clients.”

Artichoke will bring its design staff onboard as well, bringing the total number of design professionals at the Chateau to 12.

Artichoke’s retail offerings, including lamps – a popular item, according to Early – will also be returning at its new location.

A showroom currently inhabited by Artichoke at 240 W. Main Street will remain open by appointment only.

Earley and the Moores said they’re excited to be able to offer a much fuller range of services.

Little Star Center’s Rosswurm appointed to fourth term on Indiana Commission on Autism – Mary Rosswurm, MBA, executive director of Little Star Center, has been appointed to a fourth two-year term on the Indiana Commission Rosswurm on Autism by Brian Bosma, Indiana Speaker of the House.

The commission is directed by the Indiana General Assembly to study the service delivery system for individuals and families living with autism, examines the need for and effectiveness of available programs, and oversees and updates the development of a comprehensive plan for services for individuals of all ages with autism. “It has been great to see the positive impact that the commission has made since its inception,” said Rosswurm. “Hoosiers affected by autism are very lucky to have such supportive legislators working for them.”

Carmel senior receives ExtraordinAIRy Treasures scholarship – Terrance Lewis, a 2012 graduate of Carmel High School, received one of 16 ExtraordinAIRy Treasures scholarships awarded by Williams Comfort Air. A plaque and $1,000 were presented to him on July 16th at the Monon Community Center in Carmel. According to Lewis his selection letter, Lewis was recognized for his selflessness, character, dedication, perseverance and commitment. He will attend the University of Southern Indiana this fall to major in business.

Carmel native Sarah Litzsinger awarded Ten Chimneys Fellowship – The Ten Chimneys Foundation announced recently the 10 Broadway actors who will participate in the 2012 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program, widely acclaimed national program to serve the future of American theatre. Among those selected was Sarah Litzsinger, a native Litzsinger of Carmel and 1990 CHS graduate. Extend your life, read this Commenaty by Jeff Worrell People who read this column may live longer and have more free time. Now, if I could only kill the germs that cause bad breath, I could claim to be the next “I’ll tell you how to live your life” guru. Could lifestyle expert Dr. Jeff join the ranks of Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz? Probably not as I don’t believe I have a cure for bad breath. But recent research shows I do have a shot at helping you live longer. Throw in a secret which gives you the feeling of more free time and I think at a minimum, this column could be hang on the front of the refrigerator material.

Each week in this space, I attempt to bring recognition to good people doing good things in and for our community. Seven times out of ten, there is a call to action for you to get involved and help out as a volunteer. Thus, the first step in my 2 step plan to a longer, happier life is to volunteer. A new study shows people who volunteer for selfless reasons, such as helping others, live longer than those who don’t lend a helping hand. University of Michigan researcher Sara Konrath and colleagues analyzed results from a study following 10,317 Wisconsin residents who graduated from high school in 1957.

The findings showed that those who volunteered

for more altruistic reasons had lower mortality rates as of 2008 than people who did not volunteer. Of the 2,384 non-volunteers, 4.3 percent were deceased four year later, compared with 1.6 percent of altruistic volunteers who had died.

But, if living longer is not nudge enough to volunteer, then how about gaining more time in your life. A different study shows that those who volunteer their time, feel they have more of it. “Although it seems counterintuitive to give away any of your time when you feel your time to be scarce, our findings suggest that even spending small pockets of time to help others can make people feel more effective and they can do a lot with the limited time they have,” said study leader Cassie Mogilner of the Wharton School of the University Of Pennsylvania. “Giving time makes people feel like they have more time,” Mogilner said.

So, the next time you see an email or phone number in this column soliciting volunteers, consider it your clandestine opportunity to serve mankind while stacking the deck in your favor.

By Jordan Fischer • jordan@youarecurrent.com Proposed intersection improvements at 96th Street and Towne Road could start as early as Oct. 1, according to Mayor Jim Brainard.

The project, which was originally scheduled to begin in 2011, was delayed by the Indianapolis City Council following complaints from residents in the condominium association just south of the intersection, according to Brainard.

“So, we decided to redesign it and push it 20 feet north so it’s entirely in Carmel,” he said.

The city is now waiting for Duke Energy crews to relocate existing utilities at the intersection, which is under way. Assuming the relocation stays on schedule, Brainard said, intersection improvements could be completed by the 5th Annual Carmel 5k for Haiti to take place Saturday – The 5th Annual Carmel 5k for Haiti will take place Aug. 4, beginning at 8 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Rd., Carmel. The 5k run/walk event will be followed by a free kids fun run. The course will be USATF certified and awards will be presented to the top 3 male and female finishers. Registration is available online at carmel5kforhaiti.org and is $20 through Aug. 2. Race day registration is available for $22.

Shop Talk Road closures hurt business Commentary Jason Peek Well, it’s been a while (because Carmel has been pretty calm), but … I’m back!

Merchants were participating in “The Art of Wine” event a week ago Saturday which does attract a lot of people to the district. But, same as last year, they (you know who you are) obviously didn’t read my last article. They also didn’t care that street closures starting at 9:45 a.m., (when everyone was told 10 a.m., which is too early anyway) RUIN BUSINESS! So, I’m sitting in my empty barber chair staring a very vacant street. Bottom line, the people who set up for this event don’t need seven hours to get ready. We, the merchants, who are here year-round, are put on the back burner for the people who visit Carmel to sell and show their products.

We should not have money taken from our pockets for the sake of accommodating guests.

Yes, that sounds dramatic, but as a guy with four kids, it impacts me. It definitely doesn’t benefit me or my business. That goes for all the guys in the barber shop, as well as other merchants.

Listen to your local merchants about their

concerns and come up with a new plan! Please quit putting the screws to us, and work with us to improve things. We also want Carmel to boom, and we are smart enough to run successful businesses.

We might have better ideas than one person, or even a whole committee.

Road closures also prevent locals from going about their daily business. More input helps, and I’ve previously suggested creating an email system, or something for merchants to share their input. Or, just stop by and talk to us. I’ve never had one customer in six years come in and say how happy they were about the street closures that last for hours. There have already been too many bad decisions made and too much debt created around here, so let’s use our brains and think of a different way.

By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com More than 460 4-H’ers participated in this year’s photography project – the second highest number of any project (behind 593 4-H’ers in crafts). Among them was Laura Milam, a 10year member of Nature Minds 4-H Club, who was exhibiting for her second year.

“My (little) sister introduced it to me, and she’s been doing better,” she said. “I use it as an excuse to go out and take pictures, capture moments.”

The photography project includes five categories: 10 prints on a poster board in either black and white or color, one salon print in black

and white or color, and creative/experimental.

Because of the large number of participants, 4-H’ers can only enter one category for judging.

Judging is open for the photography project, which means a 4-H’er sits down with a judge and explains their project. The judge asks questions and can offer critiques and tips to budding photographers. While sitting across the table from 4-H Photography Judge Ron Gill, Milam explained her 10-print color poster.

“It’s intimidating,” Milam said of open judging.

“It’s good to see someone else’s perspective. My project definitely improved from last year. I applied what I was told last year and it really helped.”

Carmel resident Nathan Brandt turns his passion for blacksmithing into a home business

By Lana Bandy • editorial@youarecurrent.com Most days, Carmel resident Nathan Brandt can be found in front of his blacksmith's forge - even during this summer's 100-plus degree heat.

Brandt, a transplant from Jackson Center, Ohio, moved to Carmel in 2011 following his now-wife. An avid blacksmith since 11 years old, when Brandt moved, he brought his shop with him.

He now operates Bear Brandt, a blacksmithing business that makes hand-forged tools and housewares. Current sat down with him to talk about pursuing an ancient profession in a modern world.

What do you do at Bear Brandt? I do blacksmithing, which is forging the steel. In forging, you heat up the steel and it gets soft like clay and you shape it with hammers and tools. I don’t just do blacksmithing, making things, but also restorations of old saws and tools, as well as sharpening and tuning. What I wanted to do when I started was introduce people to a craft that was dying. The tools were still around, but the lifestyle was going away.

The more I’ve gotten into it, though, I’ve realized that blacksmithing is coming back as an art medium.

What else do you make? I like to restore beautiful old axes and crosscut saws, but I also make ‘new, old tools.’ I do ornamental gates, railings, hardware for homes, jewelry and restoration work of antiques (like furniture).

I also do camping gear, especially for people who do Colonial reenactments. If they provide photos, I can do everything from tripods to muskets to tent stakes.

How did you get started as a blacksmith?

I got started when I was 11. I lived on a farm in Ohio and went to a lot of tractor shows where they showed the old ways of doing things. My grandfather is really into that. He took me to the tractor shows and taught me how to rebuild steam engines, swing an ax and build just about anything.

years. My great-grandfather was a pattern maker at Wagner Ware (skillets). Metal has always been around me.

Are there many blacksmiths today? It has exploded and is coming back, which is cool to see. But it is really difficult to make a living, which is why I have another job (in graphic design).

What is it that people like about your pieces? It’s important that people sense and feel the authenticity of my work.

Anybody who buys a piece from me knows I care about it. The piece will last hundreds of years and I don’t want people saying ‘that guy wasn’t good at what he did.’ When I make something, I work really hard and sweat a lot. So much work goes into every little thing. People don’t know the labor that goes into it because in today’s society we have machines to do everything.

I’m working with an antique dealer who is having me make stands for some old carnival shooting targets, the steel rabbits you shoot and they fall over. They’re small and simple, but they take an hour and a half. That may not sound hard, but if you’ve ever hammered with a six-pound sledgehammer for that long, you’ll see that it’s tough. For log furniture, I hand saw it with antique tools. It takes five to 10 hours to saw it. I do sanding by hand. Everything is hand done.

What is it you like so much about blacksmithing? I’ve done art my whole life. My whole family is artists. This has been the first art medium I’ve found that is useful. I struggled with painting. You finish it and it is ornamentation on a wall.

With this, someone can take it and cut down a tree. They can take the tools I make and make something else. The actual process of it is so cool to me. I come in the shop that is all dirty and smells like coal and in the winter, it is especially great to start the fire. The anvil I use was made in 1903. There’s so much history to everything I do and use. To use a tool that was held by another man 200 years ago, you can’t fake that. I feel like the authenticity of that is lost. You can’t replace 200 years of dirt and sweat on a tool.

Handicapable It is our position that those of us who are not handicapped need to be more considerate and stop using the handicap parking spaces. While it may seem more convenient to be able to park right next to the building as opposed to walking an extra twenty yards, the inconvenience is far greater if someone who needs the spot shows up and it is being used.

We urge those who have the tendency to park in these spots to stop, even if you are only going to be away from your car for a few minutes. Not only is it immoral, but it is also illegal. According to www.dmv. org, parking in a reserved spot without having the necessary plate or placard could get you a fine of at least $50.00. Under Indiana Law parking in a reserved spot without the proper credentials is a Class C misdemeanor.

Next time you or someone you’re in the car with has the urge to park in a handicap spot, please be respectful of those who need the spots and find another space. It may be a slight hassle to you but it will be nothing compared to what someone who needs the spot will go through.

Donald Trump moved the phrase “You’re fired!” from the personnel office to reality television. But in The Donald’s world folks go from the board room, to an elevator, to a waiting cab to be whisked away not to be seen again until some reality reunion gives them another moment of airtime. In real real life when people get the boot, there is no afterglow of residual fame to soften the blow, no career waiting at home to be resumed and no parting gifts. People suffer. After the walk of shame back to their desk, they gather their belongings – with or without the helpful oversight of a member of corporate security.

Next they leave their access cards, sign some paperwork and head to their car for the last time. No one celebrates their retirement. No one takes them for a farewell lunch at their favorite haunt. The newly unemployed drive from the lot and head home to share the news with waiting family.

Sometimes it happens with cause – the task and the laborer didn’t match. Sometimes it happens with circumstance – the role has changed and now three people can do the work of ten. And, sometimes it happens for what seems to be no real reason at all. Whatever might be the genesis, it rarely seems bearable at the time. I’ve been on both sides of this transaction and didn’t like it from either vantage point. But if we had to choose, wouldn’t more of us prefer to suffer the pain while drawing a paycheck? If we are fired, it is rough. Nothing makes it better. Well maybe, time, the support of family and a good plan can ease the pain. And if we have to be the bad guy, respect and sincerity are required – bad doesn’t have to be awful.

Congratulations to the School Resource Unit of the Carmel Police Dept., which serves the Carmel Clay School District, for being chosen by the National Association of School Resource Officers as its 2012 Model Agency. The SRU received the award at the National School Resource Officer Conference. The prestigious honor is bestowed annually to law enforcement agencies that have shown excellence in several areas while implementing or maintaining a model school resource officer program. Recipients have shown a willingness to be proactive in their training, comprehensive in their policies, demonstrated excellence in their daily operation, and have brought recognition to the SRO program. Reader is disappointed by Lazy River experience Editor, I have been a member of the Monon Center since its opening. I love going to the pool, except for one thing: the lazy river! It really is not a “lazy” river. First off, in order to get a tube, you have to wait your turn, right? Wrong! You will wait till the cows come home because most people don’t care that you have been waiting for a tube. They just run out into the flow of riders and take the next available tube. I was totally humiliated by 3 teenage boys who disregarded the need to wait their turn. I kindly told them there was a line, and they looked at me like I was crazy.

Instead of waiting, they went out and grabbed tubes that did not belong to them. When I said

they belonged to the couple in front of me, the boys just laughed and went on their way.

Both adults and kids disregard those who are waiting patiently. How hard would it be to install a rope or something so that everyone knows where to enter and exit? It would create an obvious line with visual marks. Usually when I go to the Lazy River, I end up leaving because I have been laughed at, told to mind my own business, or various other rude remarks. Frankly, there really isn’t any place at the center for adults to enjoy.

In the future, I hope they will consider everyone frequenting the center. Until then, I think I may have to find another pool where I can relax.

School schedules fine as-is Editor, I’m a parent and an educator and completely disagree that our students “don’t get a full summer.” I would suggest you attend some of the local school districts calendar planning teams to see the research and planning that goes into scheduling.

I have been a Carmel employee for 27 years and am a parent in Noblesville. I have been asked my opinion in both roles about issues such as completing semester one prior to winter break, which federal holidays should be taken off and how long breaks should be.

You may be surprised to know that the majority rules and we are quite satisfied with

current schedules. In fact, most Hamilton County schools will be moving to June and July breaks, with two weeks in fall, winter, and spring within the next few years.

My reasons are simple: We no longer have the need to have our kids home to help with planting and harvesting and the current 10 weeks of summer break provides a lot of opportunity to lose skills previously gained.

Finally, when I was growing up (1970’s) there were kids who attended multiple weeks of camp, but those types of camps are very rare now and if they did exist would be cost prohibitive.

Reader disagrees with Wilson’s female driver argument Editor, I thoroughly enjoy your newspaper. It provides great information about Carmel and surrounding cities and towns. I applaud you for having a diverse selection of articles and writers. You provide a forum for potential controversy, which can be a good thing if it promotes meaningful conversations about what’s happening in our area.

While reading the July 17th column by Danielle Wilson, I had some thoughts that I want to share.

Danielle, you speak about middle-aged female drivers. Hate to tell you this, but you are one. I understand why your white mini-van is dented. You make me very afraid to encounter one. I would advise you to not venture too far from Carmel. Your constant yelling, swearing, gesturing and honking could get you shot, or arrested for road rage. By the way, the left lane is not the “fast lane”; it is the passing lane. There is no such lane as the fast lane. The speed limit applies to all lanes. Also, please learn the difference between “aggressive” and defensive driving. “Ag-

gressive” is what could get you shot or arrested.

“Defensive” is what has kept me from avoiding your honking, gesturing and swearing. By the way, I bet you honk at people who don’t turn right on the red. That is an option, not a necessity. Once again, let me state, “ROAD RAGE.” Danielle, I sincerely hope your children aren’t in the white dented mini-van while you are gesturing, swearing and swerving to avoid all those other middle-aged females. Do you realize what you are teaching them about driving? You’ll have teen drivers sooner than you think. Grow up and be a positive role model, not a “road rage mama.”

To the Editors: Please, will you attempt to keep your writers from blaspheming. There is a difference between Anglo-Saxon swear words and blasphemy. I didn’t know that Jesus was a middle-aged female driving in Carmel. Oh, wait, Danielle was using that as an expletive. It is never necessary to use that language.

DIVORCE – WHAT TO EXPECT: Going to Court In family law cases, there are times when a settlement between the parties is not possible.

Therefore, the parties must proceed to Court. In such circumstances, often the “fear of the unknown” is a major concern for clients. Most people do not have experience with court proceedings. In the event your case proceeds to a hearing, knowing what to expect (to the extent that is possible) in Court can help to ease your concerns.

Request the Hearing. With limited exceptions, a hearing will be scheduled upon the request of either party. The request for a hearing typically includes an estimate of the amount of time it is anticipated will be needed to present the evidence. If it appears settlement will be unlikely, it is advisable to request a hearing as soon as possible to ensure your hearing is scheduled promptly.

Be Prepared. Preparation is the key to going to trial.

While in Court, there is a limited time within which to present your evidence to the judge. Therefore, being prepared will ensure that you are able to present as much testimony and evidence as possible. It is important to meet with your attorney prior to any hearing to prepare your testimony and discuss what to expect at the hearing.

What to Wear? It is not necessary to dress in a suit when appearing in Court. Clean, conservative businesscasual dress is recommended.

Can My Child Testify? As a general matter, Court’s prefer to determine the issues of a case without the child’s

testimony. In the event a party would like the child to be interviewed by the judge only – rather than appear in front of all parties in the Courtroom – a party may request that the judge speak to the child in his office. There are many variables to consider in making such a request and you should consult with your attorney before making a decision.

The Day of the Hearing. When you arrive in the courtroom, you should ensure you are on time. It is likely that the parties to the case, their attorneys, the judge, and court staff will be the only individuals present in the Courtroom. When the judge enters, he/she will begin the proceeding and the Petitioner (the party requesting the hearing) will begin to present his/her case. At the close of the Petitioner’s case, the opposing party will present his/her evidence. When all evidence has been presented, the judge will consider the evidence and issue a ruling. This may be done in court immediately after the hearing, or at a later date if the judge takes the matter under advisement.

Fifty Shades of Gray

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Well now! I just finished the controversial Fifty Shades of Gray by E.L. James, and I have to say, I can definitely understand what all the fuss is about. Spoiler alert: I may reveal more than you’d like to know, so now’s the time to skip over to another article if you plan to read it. And if you have a predetermined aversion to erotic literature and/or already think I’m going to hell in a Prada handbag, you should also turn the page.

On to the good stuff! Okay, first let me say that Fifty Shades is not going to win any major literary awards. The writing is subpar, almost immature, with too many repeated catch phrases and words for my liking. Ms. James is not even on the same planet as my beloved Nora Roberts.

I also didn’t like the main characters. Anastasia never did or said anything worthy of a strong protagonist, and was too insecure to make me care about her. And the only redeeming quality in Christian was his Calvin-Klein-underwearmodel body. He was simply a selfish punk most of the time. That being said, I do think Ms. James came up with an intriguing story of two people so different they couldn’t possibly NOT fall in love.

But let’s be honest, I didn’t buy the book for its purported literary prowess. When I finally got to the first sex scene (a too-long one hundred pages in), I was very thankful I hadn’t fol-

lowed my instincts and chucked it out the window. Oh. My. Lord. Is it hot in here? This ain’t for the faint of heart, and it certainly doesn’t contain your typical, flowery romance-novel scenarios. James holds no detail back and offers what I can only assume is a very accurate depiction of the S&M world of dominants and submissives, “chips, dips, chains and whips.” (Sorry, but Weird Science is the only exposure I’d had to this lifestyle prior to Fifty Shades!)

Sure, I felt wrong reading it in the company of my kids, but surprisingly empowered too: “Mommy’s reading her porn; make your own macn-cheese!” When I wasn’t suffering a hot flash or yearning for Doo, I wondered if I could ever be brave enough to try some of it myself. I don’t have an answer yet, but I’m happy to know that there are more flavors than vanilla (wink, wink.)

In retrospect, I’m glad I read the book, as it seems most of you are who have emailed. Fifty Shades may not change your life, but it should provide some fascinating ideas to help jumpstart your libido. If nothing else, it’s a harmless, easy read with an endless amount of hilarious conversation fodder. Peace out.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SETTLE ALL THE DEBT? Most of the time a creditor will not begin negotiating until debt is 6 months past due. Therefore debt settlement is usually completed as soon as terms are reasonable.

AM I TAXED ON THE MONEY SAVED? There could be tax due on money saved. Your accountant can see if you are exempt from taxes under IRS Insolvency Rules, Publication 4681.

Facelifts may need ‘help’ Commeantary by Dr. Barry Eppley

Q: I had a facelift about six weeks ago. This was a very traumatic experience for me.

While my jowls and neck got better, my nasal folds and turned down corners of the mouth did not. They initially looked good while I was still swollen but that has now all gone away. This is very disappointing since this was one of the main reasons I had the operation. I feel like I wasted my money as my jowls and neck were not that bad.

A: This is a common misconception and occurs either as a result of inadequate education during the consultation or a failure to understand what a facelift does best on your part. Because the tissue pull of a facelift occurs from around the ears, it has the least effect on anything far away. The mouth area is the fur-

thest point from the ears on the face, thus deep nasolabial folds or a downturned corner of the mouth will ultimately remain unchanged. It is just biomechanically impossible to substantially change the center of the face from back in the hairline. This is an issue that has frustrated facelift surgeons for years and many techniques have been tried, few with much success. This is why adjunctive techniques are often done with facelift that address the mouth area directly, like fat injections and a corner of the mouth lift. These can be at the time of a facelift or afterwards as may be desired in your case.

Three Ds Pub and Café combines coffee and breakfast with live music and evening drinks

Less than two weeks later, the same location reopened under the ownership of Erin Heller as Three Ds’ Pub and Café. Retaining much of the nightclub and bar atmosphere of the former business, Three Ds’ adds family dining, breakfast service, a full coffee bar and a smoke-free environment to the restaurant’s all-inclusive equation.

Heller, an Ohio native with family in Southern Indiana, is taking her life in a different direction with the opening of Three Ds’, her first business.

“I worked at the county auditor, as a jailor in Ohio and even a supervisor at Kmart,” said Heller. “I’ve had a bunch of different jobs over the years, and I decided it was finally time for me to do something that was really for me, what I wanted to do.”

Heller has always made fundraising and volunteering a part of her life. Heller was part

of Soroptimist, a worldwide organization for woman, while living in Seattle prior to her move to Carmel. With Three Ds’, Heller is working with local advocacy group Prevail, Inc. “I want to be sure that people know that 10 percent of our coffee sales go to Prevail for domestic violence victims,” said Heller.

Local bands will be performing live every Friday and Saturday in Three Ds’ sizeable back room. Throughout the week, the stage will also feature open mics, karaoke and even something Heller refers to as “open practice.”

“If a local band wants to start to get their name out, they can practice on our stage on Monday nights, get some exposure and see how they would do with patrons in the area,” said Heller. “All they need to do is call and schedule a time with us.”

Heller is planning on booking a variety of music on Three Ds’ stage beyond the normal rock outfits commonly seen performing across the Northside.

onstage here, including some country,” said Heller. “I’m really into rockabilly and bluegrass. I grew up on the punk scene so I’d like to get some of that in here as well.”

With the restaurant and both bars now open and operational, the work is far from done but Heller is pleased to be busy. ““I thrive on stress,” said Heller. “The more things I have going on at one time, the more I tend to get done.”

After a visit to the salon from King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, Marie is asked to teach the art of wax modeling to Madame Elizabeth, the sister of the King. Travelling weekly between workingclass Paris and the royal palaces at Versailles, Marie is privy to some of the secrets of the royal family and cleverly learns to play both sides.

The Grosholtz home is regularly visited by men who will be instrumental in beginning the French Revolution such as the Duc d’Orleans and Maximilien Robespierre. As the citizens in Paris rebel and frustration with the royal family and the French government leads to anarchy, Marie is imprisoned and asked to make death masks of guillotine victims – an offer she can’t refuse. While imprisoned she meets her future husband Francoise Tussaud.

Told in Marie’s voice, this even-paced, plotdriven novel will take the reader from the days preceding the French Revolution through the Reign of Terror. Marie’s sympathy toward the royal family makes for an interesting point of view. Many famous historical figures such as

Jean-Paul Marat and the Marquis de Sade appear in the novel, and endnotes let the reader know what happened to the novel’s major characters after the Revolution.

Sesame Roasted Salmon Skewers Ingredients: 1/2 cup toasted sesame oil, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon grated ginger, 2 finely minced garlic cloves, zest and juice of 1 lime, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 1/2 pounds skinless and cubed salmon fillets, 2 tablespoons sesame seeds Directions: Mix all ingredients without salmon and sesame seeds. Other members of that list include Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) who cast 15,236 votes, and Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-WV), who tops the list with 18,689. Lugar will retire from the Senate in January following his defeat in May’s primary election by Richard Mourdock.

Shelly Fisher hopes to transform medical ID bracelets from unattractive necessities to fashionable accessories, and she’s targeting Hamilton County and Central Indiana to do it.

Protecting yourself from your pet Commentary by Jamie Ianigro Question from Billy S. from Noblesville: I’ve got a big friendly dog, but I’ve always worried about what would happen if she bit someone. Am I protected if something like this happens?

Response from Jamie Ianigro: We all love our pets. They make great family members, playmates and protectors, but they are always causing problems for insurance companies.

Nearly two million people are bitten by dogs each year with around 800,000 of those folks requiring professional medical treatment for their wounds.

Each of these incidents is a potential lawsuit and happened to unsuspecting pet owners just like us.

Tens of millions of U.S. households own dogs and incidents show no sign of slowing down. A key factor that contributes to these incidents is the failure of dog owners to supervise and train their pets.

Another problem is that many persons, especially children, do not know how to behave around dogs.

The best part about this issue is that you’re already protected if you have a homeowner’s insurance policy. Just make sure you have adequate limits to protect you from financial damage if you have an incident like this. I recommend that everyone have a minimum liability limit of $1,000,000. Adding an extra million in coverage with an umbrella policy is also a good idea and doesn’t cost as much as you might imagine.

Drawing a blank on old news Commentary by Bob Walters I couldn’t think of a thing.

Recently, at the end of a good sermon about Abraham almost sacrificing his son Isaac (Genesis 22) and how Abraham had obediently left all behind to follow God in the first place, the pastor called people to come up front who prayerfully had something “they wanted, needed to leave behind.” It’s a common altar call to help people replace the snares and despair of today with the hope of Christ in the future.

I thought and thought and – I do not say this boastfully – seriously couldn’t come up with anything to leave behind.

I’m big on memories, pretty good with trivia, and am very sentimental about people and things past. It’s not like I forget where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to. But the Bible is pretty clear that life in Christ is about the future (2 Peter 3:14).

I encounter my own sin and guilt on a daily basis. But I also deal with it on a daily basis, with repentance and extreme thanks that I’m forgiven. Sometimes it takes a lot of prayer to redirect my gaze from something I’ve done that was hurtful, stupid, or just generally short of God’s glory (hey, that hardly ever happens …), but eventually I’m looking forward. And while that may be the greatest, most comforting truth of the Christian life; regrettably, you have to be

careful who you share it with.

Many Christians come unglued if they can’t feel bad about their sin, and are indignant if someone they meet isn’t feeling bad about theirs.“Something bad has happened in your life?

Well … you’re a sinner and a just God is punishing you!”

I’m a sinner, yes, but thankful for and praising a just God who forgives anyway.

My walk with the Lord is joy. But when you tell some people, “Hey, I really ‘get’ this Christian thing and God is great and Jesus is not just mine but the whole world’s savior, and the Spirit is here if you’ll just listen,” they can’t share your joy if they can’t first indict your sin. And then they wonder why people won’t follow them to church.

Journalism school taught me that it is always more valuable to tell someone what’s going to happen than what has already happened.

(Would you rather have tomorrow’s lottery numbers, or last night’s?) You want good news?

Find a future in Christ. You want old news? Try to earn salvation by dragging around your own sin, guilt, fear, and anger.

It hasn’t worked yet.

Homemade butter in a jar Commentary by Ashley Phipps

As this crazy hot summer continues to keep us indoors more often than I’d like, I have been trying to find some simple, inexpensive and fun activities for my children and I to do together.

We always love creating with food, so we decided to break out of our normal sweet food routine and go for something a little more savory. We decided to make our own Homemade Butter.

Don’t worry. You won’t need a churn. Just a few simple things you probably already have in your home!

You will need: • heavy cream (as much as you want, the more cream, the more butter you will make!)

• pinch of salt (optional) • marble • jar or other tight sealing container First, you will take your heavy cream and pour it into a jar with a pinch of salt. (I used a plastic freezer jam jar, but any tight sealing jar or container will work.) Add the marble.

And then shake it vigorously.

Keep shaking. And shake some more. Be sure to involve your children in this part!

After about 15 minutes of shaking, the sides of your jar will start to become clean.

And after another 5 minutes of shaking or so,

you should be done shaking!

When you open the container, you will see that there is a solid part and a liquid part. The easiest way to finish the butter making process is to take the solid part out of the container and squeeze the excess liquid out with your (clean) hands. Then it should look like butter!

If you put it in the fridge for a bit, it will harden up just a bit more and will be the texture, consistency and taste of butter! YUMMY! Who knew making butter was so easy?! And you will get a bicep workout in the process.

Salmonella prompts recalls Commentary by John Mikesell

Because of the many pet foods recalls of late, I thought it would be a good idea to post some tips from the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta).

1. Purchase products with no visible damage to packaging.

2. If possible, store dry pet food in its original bag inside a clean, dedicated plastic container with a lid. Keep the top of the bag folded or closed.

3. Store dry pet food and pet treats in a cool, dry place under 80 percent.

4. Promptly refrigerate or discard unused, leftover wet pet food and containers. The fridge should be set at 40 percent.

5. Do not handle or store pet food in areas where human food is prepared. Feed pets in areas other than the kitchen.

6. Use a clean, dedicated scoop, spoon or

cup to scoop pet food. Do not use the pet bowl. Wash pet food bowls, dishes and scooping utensils with soap and hot water regularly. Avoid washing items in the kitchen sink or bathtubs to prevent cross contamination.

7. Do not allow children younger than five to touch or eat pet food, treats or supplements.

8. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water right after handling pet food and treats or, after contact with animals or their environments – and especially before preparing, serving or eating food or drinks or preparing baby bottles.

9. Clean up after your pet. Scoop the litter box and clean up dog waste in the yard Dailey.

Limestone provides class to buildings, lawns Landscaping by Randy Sorrell The Palladium, White House, Pentagon, Empire State Building and the Biltmore mansion share a distinct attribute. They are constructed of limestone harvested from Indiana, as are 35 of the nations state capital buildings. Understandably, Bedford, Ind. was considered the limestone capital of the world for years.

It’s a favorite material of architects, “greenies” and construction teams worldwide driven by its’ soft nature, ease of cutting, copious supply chain and strong durability. I suspect those attributes were appreciated in 2,600 B.C. as thousands of slaves struggled to assemble the Great Pyramid. It remained paper white and smooth as glass until Arabs began “repurposing” the limestone exterior for mosques and other buildings.

PATIO. WALLS. SLABS. BRIDGE. The organic history lends credibility to its’ inspired modern use. We love sourcing limestone in patios, retaining walls and as large slab steps in the landscape. Its’ immediate footprint is green friendly and, as the featured photos reflect, can be employed to formalize or naturalize.

The formal cut limestone wall and stately columns, repeated elsewhere in the estate, lends a textural counterpoint against the surrounding landscape, aged red clay paver auto court and brick / mortar historic home. And just about every custom home improvement project is some combination of necessary function and enhanced livability.

Value engineering helps to ensure that all those project and lifestyle tumblers fall neatly into place and properly click when making a real-life decision to undertake a master bathroom custom improvement project.
