Tru hotel, offices planned north of Ritz Charles

DEVELOPMENT Lauth Group has submitted plans with the City of Carmel to build a five-story Tru by Hilton hotel, three-story office complex and parking garage on approximately 4 acres at 12166 N. Meridian St. This is the third time a developer has proposed a hotel on the site. The first plans included a stand-alone hotel with surface parking, which did not meet the city’s standards for the site, and a second developer dropped its plans — which included increased density and underground parking — after determining costs were prohibitive, said Larry Longman, senior vice president with Lauth Group, at a June 25 Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals meeting.

“What we think we’ve found in this third effort is something that really strikes harmony with the economics that make this work,” Longman said.

OPE neighbors have ‘painful’ discussion about moving forward

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Orchard Park Presbyterian Church shares many ties with its neighborhood elementary school, besides its name.

Before moving into its current building EDUCATION at 106th Street and Westfield Blvd. approximately 60 years ago, the congregation held services at Orchard Park Elementary, which was brand new at the time. Since then, the two groups have developed a partnership through tutoring, supply drives, school-break meal programs and more.

“The school and the church have always anchored the neighborhood,” said Shelly Wood, OPPC senior pastor. “So, losing one of the two is a significant loss.”

That’s why Wood opened the church July 10 to the community for a conversation about how the neighborhood can move forward in light of a June 25 Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees decision to close Orchard Park Elementary and open a new campus more than 5 miles away. Approximately two dozen residents gathered at the meeting to ask questions, support each other and discuss next steps.

Wood asked that the discussion not turn political, but she acknowledged it would be a difficult conversation to have.

“This is really painful and hard work. We can focus on moving forward, but we also just need to stop for a second and say there’s pain in (this situation), and there’s some feeling of injustice,” Wood said to the attendees. “I feel like there needs to be some accountability to that as well.”

Former CCS school board member Bruce Breeden, who attends OPPC, reviewed the timeline of events that led to the vote to close OPE and recounted highlights of a recent discussion he had with Roger McMichael, CCS associate superintendent for business affairs, who made the recommendation to close OPE. Breeden, who did not officially speak on behalf of CCS, said the district is planning to form a committee to determine what happens to the OPE building when students move out. Possibilities include leasing it to the Carmel Dads’ Club, opening a low-cost day care center or using it for Car-

mel Clay Parks & Recreation purposes, he said.

“There is no intention by Carmel Clay Schools to sell it to a developer to make it become something else, residential or whatever,” Breeden said.

The school is expected to remain open through the 202021 school year. After that, Breeden said it would be “reasonable” to anticipate that most of the students who live closest to OPE would be redistricted to Forest Dale Elementary.

During table discussions, attendees shared frustrations with communication from CCS regarding the issue and the process that led to the decision to close the school. Some asked why the vote took place before a demographic study planned for this fall and less than a week before a new superintendent took office.

“I don’t think anything monumental should be done without a superintendent in place,” said Colleen Mabry, an OPE parent who lives near the school.

Others questioned the timing of the school closure being announced less than three months after the City of Carmel annexed Home Place following a court battle that lasted more than a decade.

“There were a lot of Home Place residents who, at this point in time, think whatever they do doesn’t matter, anyway,” said Becky Lime, who lives near the school. “If it wasn’t done on purpose, it was really, really bad, unfortunate, thoughtless timing.”

Wood plans to compile a list of discussion items and ideas from the meeting to send to attendees, the school board and Carmel City Council.

Nathan Altman has never been a political person and bristles at the term “politician.”

But now that he’s making POLITICS a bid for the U.S. Senate, he does a lot of bristling.

“I never saw myself as a politician, and I still don’t,” said Altman, a Carmel resident who is running as an independent. “Probably one of the hardest things for me is the idea people view Altman me now as a politician versus anything else.”

Most of Altman’s acquaintances know him as an entrepreneur and real estate executive. But he divested himself of most of his business interests when he filed paperwork in the spring to commit all his energy to the Senate race.

Altman, 31, is seeking the Indiana seat occupied by Democrat Joe Donnelly, who is seeking re-election. Republican Mike Braun is vying for the same seat.

As a vastly underfunded independent with no party support, Altman — the son of Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman, a Republican — knows the odds are stacked against him. But frustrated with what he regards as inefficient two-party governance, he is running to promote the concept of Liquid Democracy — a mix of direct democracy and representative democracy that allows constituents to vote on issues directly or to delegate voting authority to a trusted party.

“Liquid Democracy is a hybrid where we can have the best of two worlds,” Altman said.

Because of financial and logistical obstacles, Altman abandoned his initial plan to collect — per Indiana election law — 26,999 verified signatures by July 2 to get on the ballot. Instead, he is pursuing a write-in campaign, which presents its own set of challenges.

But he is undaunted.

“The hurdles we still need to overcome are vast,” Altman said. “The question really lies on the voters, or the constituents, if they’re willing to evaluate where they’re at today and whether they continue to want to think that red versus blue is going to continue to solve the problem.”

Awards add up for math duo

By Chris Bavender news@currentincarmel.com Two Carmel High School students credit early exposure to math for their success in elite math competiACHIEVEMENT tions. Joey Heerens and Kevin Liu, who will be seniors this fall, said they naturally gravitated toward the subject and were encouraged by teachers along the way.

“I grew up doing advanced math and was introduced to math competitions during my last years of elementary school,” Liu Heerens said. “For the first time I was surrounded by people who were just as interested in math as I was.”

Heerens, who spent a lot of time as a youngster reading math books, said the subject intrigues him because it is able to “provide answers to some of the most complicated problems.”

“The fact we can take this language of words and characters to provide answers to complex problems just amazes me and

keeps me trying to find multiple ways on how to answer these,” he said. “So, I guess when I was younger it was about the challenge, but over time it evolved into a deep appreciation for what we as a society can achieve with math.”

The two teens have enjoyed much success in competitions. As sixth-graders, they were ranked in the top four in Indiana for the MATHCOUNTS event for middle schoolers. In 2015, Liu was ranked first in Indiana and Heerens was fourth. Their team went on to win the national MATHCOUNTS title with Liu finishing first overall in the Liu U.S. while Heerens finished 14th out of the 224 participants.

That success has continued at CHS. Earlier this year, Liu finished fourth overall and Heerens seventh in the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament in the Algebra and Number Theory category. In early June, the duo competed in the annual national competition for the American Regions Mathematics League, where Liu once again finished fourth and Heerens placed 12th.

“I am very fortunate to be recruited to Notre Dame, so I am going to compete for the swimming and diving team,” Wiese said.

“The team is cool because there are 25 female swimmers, and five of us girl divers. I just wanted to use diving to get me into the best university. I want to gain everything I can while attending a really good school.”

She plans to major in history and has a firm career goal.

“I want to be a presidential biographer.

I want to have a Ph.D in U.S. presidents,” Wiese said. “My dream job is to run the Kennedy Library, which is a branch of the National Archives in Boston.”

Annie Wiese broke her leg in middle school, but the stroke of bad luck turned out to be a good thing in EDUCATION the long run.

The Carmel resident and recent graduate of online school Indiana Connections Academy recently received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. Half of the scholarship is for academic excellence and half is for diving, a sport she fine-tuned after her injury.

“I went to Clay Middle School for sixth and seventh grade,” Wiese said. “Right before eighth grade I broke my leg. I had to have this trauma surgery, and I wouldn’t have been able to go to school for the entire first semester, anyway. I didn’t want to miss it and get behind, so I started online school.”

During her recovery, she was approached by a diving coach whose team was comprised strictly of homeschoolers.

“They practiced during the day. I tried it and it worked out for me,” Wiese said. “It’s different than other schools because of the versatility. It’s online and I could do my work on my time.”

Prather shares signing ability

Richard Prather has used sign language his entire life because his parents were deaf.

SENIORS Now, he is in the process of sharing his signing ability with his fellow residents of Woodland Terrace of Carmel.

“There are a lot of people here that are enjoying learning how to sign,” he said.

“Some want to learn and some have friends that are deaf.”

Prather, 70, has partnered with fellow resident Colleen David to create a program at Woodland Terrace called Express Through Hands.

A class was held for a while but now is on hold until a new spot on the community schedule can be found, his wife Debi Prather said.

The class had been during the dinner hour but many expressed interest in attending if it was at a different time, Debi said. “(Signing) is only successful if you practice it,” Richard Prather said.

Richard Prather, a retired attorney, interpreted for the Indianapolis Children’s Choir for 20-plus years. Debi was one of the choir directors.

Prather signed the national anthem for many Indiana University basketball games.

Prather moved to Woodland Terrace’s assisted living section in October 2017 following his second stroke two months before.

“This place is kind of like going to a resort compared to what my mother lived in,” Prather said. “This place is so accommodating.”

Debi, a retired Brownsburg High School choral teacher, said Woodland Terrace activities were the main reason why he is there.

“Instead of waiting until he was physically at a place where he needed constant care, I decided it would be better for him to keep his brain active than to sit at home and watch TV all day,” Debi said.

Simons said she read “It Started with Goodbye” during her stay at Riley.

“I read (the novel) while I was going through a very hard time, and it completely lifted my spirits,” Simons said. “It is such a beautifully written novel.”

Simons reached out to June via email and explained how the book helped her through the stress of her medical issues.

CHS grad helps revolutionize facial prosthetics through art, 3-D printing

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com When Jordan Nelsen graduated from Carmel High School in 2012, she knew that she wanted to study art in college and make a career of it someday.

COVER STORY She enrolled in the Herron School of Art + Design and focused her studies on drawing and illustration, eventually deciding to pursue a second degree in Media Arts & Sciences with the IU School of Informatics and Computing. It was in a 3-D printing course for her second major that a chance encounter changed not only her trajectory but also the lives of several people recovering from traumatic injuries or cancer.

In that class Nelsen met Travis Bellicchi, an Indiana University School of Dentistry resident who wanted to learn how digital molds and 3-D printing could help his patients, many of whom had severe facial deformities as a result of accidents or cancer. Bellicchi saw potential for 3-D printing to revolutionize the delivery of facial prosthetics, greatly reducing the amount of time and effort it took to create a customized piece.

Turns out, he was right. Bellicchi has partnered with Nelsen and others to quickly create 3-D-printed facial prosthetics for approximately 20 people. Nelsen said the unlikely partnership has been more rewarding than any other art project she’s ever done.

“It’s a crazy feeling to be able to say, ‘I designed that, and now it’s going to be worn by somebody every day and help make their life more normal,” Nelsen said. “We all look at ourselves in the mirror every day, and something we take for granted is a normal face looking back at us. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be in the position of one of my patients.”

Expanding possibilities Nelsen saw the power of uniting art and technology when she helped design and print a prosthetic nose in just a few hours for Jerry Faber, an Osgood resident who lost part of his nose to cancer.

‘An extraordinary artist’

Faber was referred to Bellicchi after three failed plastic surgeries. Less than 24 hours after their first meeting, he received the prosthetic nose, which he attaches with glue.

“It makes a world of difference,” Faber said. “I can go out in public and not feel embarrassed. It makes me feel complete again. It’s just awesome to be able to feel natural again.”

Nelsen had worked with Bellicchi prior to taking Faber’s case, and she was shocked when Bellicchi asked her if she could create the prosthetic in less than a day. She got to work and soon had it ready.

“I still wanted to fix certain things, because this was done in four hours,” she said. “(Faber) was as happy as could be. As far as he was concerned, it was perfect.”

Faber’s situation was unique, as most cases are more complex and require additional time. But Nelsen and Bellicchi believe 3-D printing can streamline the process for many patients and provide prosthetics in hours or days that used to take weeks or months to complete.

Ultimately, the technology could have global implications, Nelsen said.

“Eventually, the goal would be to be able to provide this service to people all over the world from a remote location,” she said, adding that a smartphone can be used to take photos at various angles to create a 3-D model.

Bellicchi said the process is constantly improving with new technology.

“The most exciting prospect for 3-D printing in facial prosthetics is direct silicone printing. At the moment, there is no reliable, accurate, direct silicone printing in medical-grade silicone that includes skin color pigments,” he said. “This is on the horizon, and it will be a major improvement in the field.”

Nelsen grew up in a military family, the only daughter sandwiched between two boys. Her father’s job as a U.S. Marine caused the family to move frequently, and they landed in places such as Jacksonville, Hawaii and Japan before settling in Carmel her junior year of high school.

The 24-yearold described herself as the “art geek kid” growing up.

Bellicchi said Nelsen brings more to the team than just her artistic skills.

“The level of commitment and professionalism Jordan demonstrates is outstanding. She is an extraordinary artist,” he said. “Still, what makes her truly special is her work ethic. I am so thankful we had the opportunity to work together. I look forward to further collaboration with her.”

Nelsen never thought she’d be involved in the medical field, but now that she’s volunteered her time to help change lives by designing prosthetics, she wants to be involved long term.

“I would love to continue painting for myself and exploring that kind of work, but at the same time I can’t see myself not being able to help people in this way,” she said.

“There is no feeling like that for me.”

REVOLUTIONIZING PROSTHETICS Traditionally, creating a facial prosthetic requires making a facial impression using a papier-mache type of material and a plaster cast to sculpt the artificial piece from clay or wax. Then another plaster mold is created to make the prosthesis. The process can take weeks or months to complete.

The new method can be done in hours. It begins with a facial scan using an LED-structured light scanner that is used to create a digital design that comes to life on a 3-D printer.

“This work is not unique to my profession, but it is rare,” said IU School of Dentistry resident Travis Bellicchi, who added that this type of work previously was not being done at IU.

Whether a lifetime commitment or a week per year, we are drawn to the seashore.

There is something about the endlessly lapping waves and the seemingly infinite views that connect us to that which is greater than ourselves. Globally, beaches have attracted us since humans could manage to secure a decent summer rental.

To each is a unique strategy. The youngest among us, lathered in SPF 1 million, dash across the hot sand to touch the sea at its fringe, running to and fro, in and out, with each advancing and receding wave. The teens promenade looking for others of their ilk to impress with a boogie-boarding trick or muscle flex. As we grow toward maturity, we might stroll seeking the most rare of seashells or just a bit of time away from the demands of daily life. We’ve come to know the difference between the common place and the special. But more so, we find calm in the permanence of the sea – the same today as it has been for generations.

It calls us to slow down and take stock.

Breaking free from the intentional dervish of a self-inflicted daily cyclone brings with it a highly productive zen. Time in our hammocks, watching ants go about their business below and carefully examining the individual shapes of the clouds above — each bringing a quiet that allows clarity of thought and intention. Yet, many live a pattern of deliberate resistance to peace and an equivalent desire for manufactured chaos. Like the child unaware that if she allows the wave to break over her feet, that moments later it will recede, are we spending our precious energy on the inconsequential?

I’ve been usurped! Yes, folks, my role as the Queen of the Fourth of July parade was recently co-opted by a young whippersnapper who’s never even heard HUMOR of me. True, “queen” might be an exaggeration, but in all my years of riding in the Current car, it’s been me that people acknowledge: “Danielle!

This Independence Day, however, I did not feel the love. With literally thousands of parade-goers lining the streets, I counted a total of 11 shout-outs, including those from my actual friends and neighbors. That’s a significant decrease from years past and put me on par with my top-of-the-backseat partner, Current’s cartoonist Tim Campbell, and our driver, Dennis O’Malia. Don’t get me wrong, they’re both great. But let’s be honest, I’m the controversial dance mom who readers want to see. I’m supposed to be the star!

So, what happened? I’ll tell you: A Homer Simpson imposter decided to ride shotgun.

Yep, I played second fiddle to a teenage boy wearing a rubber mask of an animated legend. Screams of “Ho-mer!” and “Doh!” filled the air from the get-go and then intensified as the newbie grew more and more comfortable with his fame. What started as shy hand waves soon became standing, doublearm finger points. Kids, grandparents, law enforcement -- everybody went crazy. He even inspired an honest-to-goodnes chant toward the end of the route.

So, I bow to thee, Jackson Neverlearnedyourlastname, for you are truly a master. I hope you enjoyed your 15 seconds, though, because next year I’m taking back the throne. I make a fantastic Elsa.

READER’S VIEW Non-mayor addresses non-issue Editor, As official non-mayors of Carmel, we have lots of material to read and digest.

But, as Ferris Bueller tells us, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

The City of Carmel issued a press release last week, headlined, “Mayor Brainard speaks on climate issues in Washington, D.C.” Fascinated, I went to the most recent Gallup Poll I could find on the issues. Its report was headlined, “Climate Change Not a Top Worry in U.S.” Of 15 issues rated by the public, it was 14th. But, I quibble.

The mayor described how millions of dollars (of borrowed money) had created nearly 200 miles of trails, bike paths and safe bike lanes. In May, Gallup found 69 percent of Republicans (and 4 percent of Democrats) said the threat of climate change is exaggerated. Elsewhere, I read that the United States contributes about 3 percent to the carbon dioxide level increase each year. You might have better data on that.

The mayor told an audience of 100 (according to the Route 50 Clean Air Action Forum website) all about “Carmel’s

story and our community’s emphasis on building a walkable and sustainable community.”

Really? With $1.3 billion in total outstanding debt obligations (as reported by the State of Indiana), the people are committed to a 3 percent gas non-issue?

In fairness, neither the mayor nor we non-mayors knows. In the last election, His Honor drew 9,584 votes. That was 63 percent of the total and 15 percent of the registered vote. So, we could say he was elected by an overwhelming minority as 85 percent of the electorate didn’t vote for him.

A more disturbing poll could interest the mayor next time he wants to spend taxpayer money on non-issues.

The 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer reported “a staggering lack of faith in government, which fell 14 points to 33 percent among the general population, and 30 points to 33 percent among the informed public.” One would think elected officials would direct concerns building trust.

READERS’ VIEWS CarmelFest switch to wristbands disappointing Editor, My family and I have lived in Carmel for about five years now and have attended Carmelfest three of those years, including this year. We have always felt fortunate to live in Carmel, and in past years I really felt the sense of community with Carmelfest. I think that was due in large part to the open firehouse, local talent show, local vendors and the friendly KidZone.

This year, however, I was very disappointed with the KidZone “wristband only” policy. I have two young boys who in years past have been able to enjoy a bouncy house or game or two. For young kids with sometimes spotty weather, the ability to buy a few tickets and do just a few activities was just right. It added to the sense of community.

With only the wristband, which was priced rather steeply in my opinion, this sense was gone for me. I do appreciate the efforts to continue to grow and change a festival so it doesn’t get stale, and we did notice some new activities in the KidZone.

However, the pricey wristband didn’t make much sense for our family. Instead of paying for this wristband, we opted to visit with and feed the animals (the only activity

not requiring a wristband). If tickets had been an option as they had in years past, I expect we would have happily waited in line to purchase some.

In addition to simply not wishing to pay this much for a KidZone wristband, I personally feel strongly against the message that it sends about CarmelFest. I realize we live in a very fortunate and generally affluent city. However, not all who visit CarmelFest may have the means to pay $25 per kid to be able to enjoy some rides. The Fourth of July, particularly, seems a chance for our community to be more inclusive, not less.

My own kids took the news well that they would not be able to go in the bouncy houses. And they certainly enjoyed the animals. In addition, I particularly want to thank the Carmel Fire Dept. for opening up the fire house again this year. My boys loved the chance to get a close-up look at the engines and meet firefighters. They clearly go above and beyond as members of this community.

My hope is, next year consideration may be given to bringing the tickets back, perhaps with discounts for pre-sale online or with the wristband as an option.

Politeness goes a long way Editor, July Fourth parades were filled this year with more than the usual number of politicians. It is great that all could walk the parade route without jeers or disrespectful comments. While I admittedly cheer a little louder for Democratic candidates I am supporting, I am also happy to see Republicans coming out to meet and mingle with the electorate.

There are times appropriate for public dissent through peaceful protests, writing letters or sending emails, asking questions of those choosing to serve through public office and by voting. Our elected officials do not control any of us as free Americans, but we do want to vote for people who stand up for right over wrong, fairness over corruption, justice over doing things that are self-serving.

This November we have the opportunity

to vote for people who speak clearly the values and ideals upheld in our Constitution, “In Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Our president says things that mock women, war heroes, racial groups and the physically challenged on a level we have never before heard from a public servant.

I respect the office of the president, but it would be difficult for me to cheer should the president stroll down Carmel’s Main Street. I would not, however, yell out crude statements — I might just have to quietly wave.

Trashing my interviews Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen and I are moving. She keeps saying we have to “downsize, downsize!” We’re both very stressed, HUMOR which is why my wife is down a size, but I’ve gone up a few.

As I recently wrote, I discarded more than 300 VHS tapes of my past TV segments.

Here are a few more I couldn’t part with: A local veterinarian took my beagle, Barney (my TV co-host for 13 years), for a few days and claimed he had cured him of his destructive habits. While interviewing Dr. Sampson on my front porch the following week, Barney dug up the rose bed and gnawed the microphone cable in half while the vet looked on in horror.

I’m keeping the tape of Eloise Overdorf, who at age 93 wanted to go 200 mph in a car. Bob Haverstick, founder of Never Too Late, an organization that granted final wishes to seniors, made it happen. The nonagenarian jumped into a dragster driven

by Davey Hamilton and off she went. “You look disappointed,“ I said when she exited the car. “I am,” Eloise said. “I thought I was going to drive.”

I interviewed members of the KKK. The

granddaughter of Sam Jones (then-president of the Indianapolis Urban League) rose to say that although she was black, she had white ancestors. “Maybe you and I are related,” she said to the Grand Wizard. Oh, the expression on his face!

There were stories I didn’t tape but wish I had, like the segment with admitted draft dodgers, one of whom was arrested during a commercial break. Or the segment with an autistic youngster, a musical savant who had never seen a xylophone, but he picked up the mallets and played a duet with local jazz great Billy Wooten. I also misplaced a tape of a little girl talking to her father at his grave, just moments after the fallen hero was laid to rest at Crown Hill.

Sadly, I’ve lost the recording of my hourlong interview with Ryan White, the last one he did before he passed away of AIDS in April of l990. I hope I find all those tapes -- and a machine to play them on.

Rosie’s Place will open its long-awaited Carmel location this in September. Owner Debbie Bourgerie said RESTAURANT Carmel was one of the first places she explored when launching Rosie’s Place eight years ago. The original locations at The Square in Noblesville and The Bricks of Zionsville have become popular brunch staples.

Bourgerie said the new space is unique for a breakfast place. The 4,000 square-foot space will feature lots of windows, a high ceiling and greenery to complement the space’s brightness while incorporating the traditional Rosie’s Place elements such as exposed brick walls, tin ceiling and wood floors. With an occupancy of 140, more outdoor seating and a mezzanine level, the Carmel location will be the largest Rosie’s Place.

The café, known for its destination dining experience and homemade Midwestern fare, will be at 1111 W. Main St. at the Olivia in Carmel. Breakfast items include classic eggs benny, corned beef hash, a daily quiche and a variety of Mexican-inspired dishes. Lunch items include the quinoa Buddha bowl, strawberry summer salad

and homemade soups. Bourgerie’s original passion was baking, and the bakery offers a range of from-scratch items.

Bougerie said she grew up in the restaurant business and hung out at her parents’ St. Louis-based restaurant as a young girl.

New owner goes old school

By Heather Collins • news@currentincarmel.com Last month, Greek’s Pizzeria on Main Street got a new owner and a new look.

The walls are now GREEK’S PIZZERIA pepperoni red and the new owner, Barry Abes, is taking the pizza restaurant back to its old-school roots.

“It’s like a throwback to the old days,” Abes said.

Greek’s will now offer slices, beer, an updated patio and additional outdoor seating. It also has added board games to the mix along with a few old games, like Ms. Pac-Man, foosball and pinball, as throwbacks to the original pizza arcades.

“We’ve added some new old games that everyone loves, to make it kind of like a pizza-pub arcade,” Abes said.

A New York native, Abes previously owned a pizzeria in Miami and has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years.

The restaurant also will have a slushy machine and a bubble tea machine for Thai tea and strawberry smoothies. Abes, a Geist resident, added 16 to 20 beer selections to the menu.

Songbook Academy has triple dose of Carmel

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Tara Lacy had such an enjoyable experience at last year’s Songbook Academy, she decided to give it another try.

“It gives me a lot more MUSIC practice singing in front of all those people,” said Lacy, who was chosen for the second consecutive year. “Plus, being able to sing Songbook standards, which is something that I love to sing, those songs from the 1920s to 1960s.”

Lacy joins fellow 2018 Carmel High School graduate Sophie Miller and Griffin Scott, who will be a CHS sophomore, in a national group of 40 vocalists to be accepted for the summer intensive program, which begins July 21 at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The program ends with a Songbook Ambassador being named following the July 28 finals at The Palladium. The Songbook Foundation founder is Michael Feinstein, the artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts.

“There’s really nothing like this that just focuses on those standards,” Lacy said. “I knew I had to come back again.”

The biggest thing she learned from the first appearance was the storytelling aspect of singing.

“You have to be able to connect with the audience through a song,” said Lacy, who will attend Indiana University and major in communications.

Lacy said she improved in performing uptempo songs during last year’s Songbook Academy training.

Lacy and Miller have been members of the Ambassadors, the mixed show choir, the past two years.

Miller said the intensive program will provide the opportunity to collaborate with students from across the U.S. and with the instructors.

“I auditioned after hearing a lot of positive feedback from my friends from school who did it last year, including Tara,” Miller said. “I love how the Songbook is more classical music and it’s different from musical theater. You get to learn about different composers, and my favorite is Irving

Miller said she became a fan of music from that era while doing history projects on World War II. “I believe it will be a good experience, foundation-wise, in terms of learning how to perform professionally in a professional setting,” said Miller, who is headed to Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., to study musical theater. “I’m looking forward to hearing everyone and watching them perform.”

Scott will be in the Ambassadors this school year.

“I love that (the Songbook is) such a classical piece of American history and the people who do it,” Scott said. “I love the relaxed pace about it. It’s more easygoing. I definitely like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby as far as artists. I mostly like jazz.”

Scott, who began taking voice lessons

in August 2017, was surprised he made the Songbook Academy.

“I never in a million years expected to get in,” Scott said.

Scott began getting more serious about singing during the past year.

“I started to learn new techniques I can do with more voice,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working with people and excel in the music business, especially in the Songbook genre, and learn as many things as possible for a living.”

Commentary by Elizabeth Morse Prosecco is a white sparkling wine made from Glera grapes in the Veneto region of Italy. Although it bubWINEderlust bles like Champagne, the method used to make Prosecco is more affordable, which is passed along to you, the consumer. Because the wines are aged in large tanks, Prosecco bubbles are lighter and less intense than Champagne. They could even be considered “frothy.”

Prosecco is fruity and not terribly dry, which makes it a great match for spicy Asian dishes, fresh fish (think sushi) and fruity, summery foods like melon and berries. Give it a whirl with cured meats, too.

A cold glass with spicy cappacuolo ham or prosciutto is a thing of beauty on a hot summer evening.

I personally enjoy the drier styles, but La Marca Prosecco is the nation’s leading seller. Although it is sweetish, it offers the delicious aromas of apples but tastes like white peaches and honeysuckle. It’s available pretty much everywhere for about $12

per bottle. The bottle itself has a pretty blue label that looks elegant on a table.

Nino Franco, Rustico Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG ($16-ish) is pretty close to perfect. It doesn’t break the bank, has a pretty, bright straw color and fruity, flowery tastes. A feminine style, with a delicate and soft texture. Dry. And finally, my choice for a splurge bottle: Bottega Gold, Prosecco DOC Spumante Brut will set you back about $30. The bright golden-colored wine has tons of very fine bubbles. On the nose, you get a lovely, flowery perfume (think wisteria and acacia) with a bit of spice. A lively wine that tastes like a mouthful of green apples. Oh, and the bottle itself is a stunner. All gold. Saluti! (that’s “cheers!” in Italian).

Julien-K has quite the ambitious summer touring schedule.

The California-based elecCONCERT tronic band is joining the Revolution 3 tour as a special guest with alternative rock stars Bush, Stone Temple Pilots and The Cult at 6:30 p.m. July 20 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center.

In between, Julien-K is headlining its own tour in between, with dates at smaller concert venues.

“It’s going to be as hectic as you can get. We’re going to play almost every day,” Julien-K lead singer Ryan Shuck said. “Athletically, it’s going to be extremely challenging, but it’s going to be awesome. We’re going to be headlining our own tour along with playing on a giant tour with awesome bands we’re huge fans of and friends with.

Our own shows are going to be more intense because we’re going to play 15 songs with full production.”

Julien-K was formed by Shuck and Amir Derakh, founders of the band Orgy.

“We occupied the charts as Orgy at the same time as Stone Temple Pilots and

Shuck and Derakh released their first album as Julien-K in 2009 and officially left Orgy in 2010.

In 2010, Shuck and Derakh also released an album with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park under the name Dead by Sunrise. Bennington committed suicide July 20, 2017.

The goal was to create a space custom-based on the needs of the family.

1. The largest change came from removing the tub/shower and replacing it with a large custom glass-enclosed shower.

This better utilized the space and allowed more natural light into the room.

2. Additionally, new cabinetry was added with a custom linen tower in the center of the double vanity for efficient storage.

3. Open shelving in the kids’ bathroom was removed to create space for a double vanity with all new cabinetry and large linen tower.

4. A wall with a pocket door was added to separate the vanity from the toilet and shower. This allows for multiple people to utilize the space at once.

5. Hardware and fixtures were updated throughout both spaces.

Background Info: This early 2000s home in the Oakridge Crossing neighborhood of Westfield is home to a young family. Overall, they love the home but their bathrooms needed some updates to create a space that functions better for the entire family.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The master bathroom had a tub/ shower, but the homeowners did not utilize the tub. The kids’ bathroom had a single vanity, making it hard for more than one person to utilize the bathroom at a time. Both bathrooms had build-grade materials that dated the spaces.

When I became a resident of a retirement community four years ago, I really didn’t know what to expect other SENIORS than wonderful services — meals prepared and served, housekeeping, social activities, fitness opportunities — the “brochure amenities.” All of these are great and they make life very easy.

Learning to live in a community is more challenging. The last time I had this experience was when I went to college at age 18.

After living independently, many new residents have difficulty adjusting to schedules for meals, activities and fitness. The resistance is shown by their frustration with things they can’t control.

Finding the bright side for the final years requires personal effort and a desire to be happy with life. Here are some suggestions.

• Connect with your memories in a positive way. Display old family photos where you can enjoy them. Maybe near your computer or on your bathroom mirror. Change them often. Search for

an old friend and connect with them (Facebook enables this easily). Play some old CDs of your favorite music and think about who you danced with and where.

• When you feel lonely, go for a walk where you will see people – in a mall or your neighborhood. Nod, smile and greet people if they seem willing to connect. Join a group at your church or volunteer for an organization. Only you can make it happen.

• Purchase a large calendar and attach it to your refrigerator door or somewhere that’s easy to see and to reach. Every day put a check mark when you have done something kind.

If it’s a relative, put their name by it. If it’s not, give yourself two check marks.

The bright side of aging is like everything else: You have to look for it.

Vienna’s Plague Column

The Graben, pedestrian-friendly and flanked by fashionable shops, is one of the liveliest streets in modern Vienna. A column at its heart celebrates TRAVEL the city’s deliverance from two 17th-century events that threatened its existence.

In 1679, the bubonic plague returned to Vienna, quickly killing 10,000 residents. In desperation, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, a resident of Vienna, prayed to God, promising to build a monument honoring the Holy Trinity if God saw fit to end the epidemic.

Leopold then moved to the safety of Prague to await the answer. As the plague subsided, perhaps due to Vienna’s innovative sanitation methods, grateful citizens erected a wooden pestsäule (pest column) on the Graben in the center of Vienna, topped by a representation of the Trinity. Soon afterward, the Holy Roman Empire defeated Turkish forces besieging Vienna, inflicting huge losses on the enemy and halting the Muslims’ advance into Europe.

In celebration of God’s support in Vienna’s victories over the plague and the Muslims, as well as his own role in them, Leopold ordered the erection of a marble column on the Graben to replace the wooden one. A series of artists was engaged to design and execute Leopold’s vision. Completed in 1694, the 69-foot-tall baroque monument contains three distinct sections. The bottom section

I can think of a few things off the top of my head that I hope never to use: Math, a fire extinguisher, GRAMMAR GUY Pepto Bismol and the flotation device on the bottom of my seat cushion on an airplane. In theory, all of these things are good to have or know about, but you hope you’re never in a situation where they’re necessary for your survival.

In the same way, it seems like people avoid using quotation marks correctly.

And, rightfully so: These punctuation marks look like a pair of commas that have pumped themselves full of helium.

But I try to look at it this way: Quotation marks are up there to give your words a high five.

Let’s start with the basics. Use quotation marks around dialogue (i.e., something someone says). “I’m still upset Pluto is no longer a planet,” Humphrey remarked. This is an example of a direct quote, so it gets quotation marks. However, consider the following sentence. Humphrey remarked he was still upset Pluto is no longer a planet. This is an example

shows a cross-wielding Faith defeating the plague, represented by a grotesque woman being held upside down. I like to think of quotation marks as T. rex fingers, demarcating the words inside as special – kind of like the lucky underwear you only wear when you want to have an exceptionally awesome day.

So, what else gets the quotation mark treatment? In addition to dialogue, AP style instructs us to put quotation marks around the titles of books, songs, television shows, computer games, poems, lectures, speeches and works of art.

Finally, use quotation marks to indicate something is unusual, novel, ironic or sarcastic. For instance, NASA continues to make us believe in the so-called “moon landing.” For the record, I didn’t say this, but I have a friend (let’s call him “Byron”) who thinks the moon landing is a hoax.

Byron uses ironic and sarcastic quotation marks all the time when referring to the various conspiracy theories.
