Carmel veterans speak out about needs, VA care

A simple heart felt thank-you is all it takes to warm the hearts of Carmel’s veterans.

With our country’s 238th Fourth of july birthday upon us don’t forget to give thanks to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces for their service to our country, fighting for our safety and protecting people throughout the world.

Far too often, veterans say that many feel lost and forgotten, struggle with re-assimilating back into society or have trouble coming home.

So with widespread reports of misconduct at several Veterans Adminstration medical centers nationally, Current in Carmel set out to talk to several veterans about local medical care, what we can do as a nation to serve these men and women when they get home from the war fronts and other service questions.

Hoosier VA care The closest medical facility for Hamilton County veterans is the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, and all of the veterans Current in Carmel spoke with said they had absolutely no problems with Roudebush - some even felt it was the best VA hospital in the U.S..

Retired U.S. Army veteran Rock Effron, who served two tours in Vietnan, is the former commander of American Legion Post 155 in Carmel and a member of the post’s executive board, said he’s never had a problem with the VA hospital.

Effron “People are going to have to wait; once I got in it was fabulous,” Effron said. “I was treated with respect and honor, they were on time. But what we do for vets is help them understand and navigate through the system. We have a representative and we tell them how to do what they need to do to get the treatments they need.”

Effron began radiation treatments last July 2013 to treat his prostate cancer, wrapping up 43 treatments and appointments in November.

“They were nothing but wonderful. They gave me appointment cards, phone calls, letters and emails to remind me and to keep their appointments or notify me of issues,” he said.

two tours in Vietnam, said he feels the same way about Roudebush as Effron.

“I love it,” Stankovich said. “You receive much better treatment then most doctors’ offices, just fabulous.”

Chuck Duke, a retired U.S. Army veteran who also served in Vietnam, seconded those comments.

Stankovich “Our local hospital and services are great - best in the country,” Duke said. “There is a waiting list, but it’s not too bad.

Most people can get in within two, three weeks.”

What it means to serve Rich Howard retired from the Duke U.S. Army in 2012 after 26 years of service. He was in Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan and is a service officer for the American Legion, helping veterans with the directions and contacts they need to receive benefits.

But the men and women that join our armed forces don’t to it for the health benefits.

Howard said he went down to the local recruiting office when he was 17 years old and has been asked every single day of his career why.

“I an honestly proud to serve my country,” he said. “It surprised everyone when I enlisted, I was only 17 and my parents had to sign, but just ask anyone that knows me and they will tell you that I am absolutely proud to be part of this country.”

Michelle Chapman, a 2nd Vice Commander in the Army Reserves, said she enlisted for direction and purpose.

“I wanted to serve my country,” she said. “My dad was a Marine, so I was a military brat.

I left college and needed some direction so I continued my dad’s and grandad’s legacy about serChapman vice to my country.”

And Chapman said more then the just the waiting times vets face when they come home need to be addressed.

“Vets are a proud group, and don’t want to ask anyone for help, especially men, they are taught not to ask for help and it’s what the military teaches,” Chapman said. “It’s what the military is about, so we have to change the vets minds as well.”

How to fix the problem A complete overhaul of the entire system is the consensus of these veterans and they said it needs to start in Washington.

Don Hudson, a retired Navy veteran, agrees that our local VA hospital is very good, but at the national level, most other hospitals treat veterans “pretty bad in general.”

“Any improvements needs to Hudson start at the top and work it’s way down,” Hudson said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Effron said that veterans need to reach out to their American Legions or VFWs and ask them for help figuring out the system.

“This is what we are here for, to help vets, but they need to keep their appointments and ask for the help,” he said. “We are not just a bunch of old people sitting around telling war stories. We help children, homeless vets, and do so much more. It’s who we are and it’s just what we do.”

Bill Sanders of Noblesville said he thinks a complete overall could help fix the problem.

“Actually we don’t need a VA hospital, we should roll their needs into our current healthcare Sanders system, and let our veterans get treated where they want, and then send the VA a bill and the VA pays it,” Sanders said. “Which could be very hard to accomplish because vets with serious injuries have to stay in the VA hospital, but they certainly shouldn’t have to wait, they should go to the top of the list, not the bottom of the list.”

But the only thing that can fix the system is funding, and through budget cuts, there in lies the problem, according to Duke.

“The problem is simply a lack of funds, and budget cuts,” Duke said. “Very rarely do they get to see actual doctors at the national level, because they use med students, due to the lack of funds.”

The only way for us as a nation to help correct this problem is to be vocal, the veterans said.

“Contact your representatives in Congress,” Duke said. “Let them know what the local VA needs are and if they get enough people they may do something about it, especially this year being an election year.”

Plans are in the works to potentially bring southside Indianapolis institution Jonathan Byrd’s to Carmel as a way to reinvigorate The Fountains on Carmel Drive. Buckingham Companies had originally purchased the shopping plaza in 2008 with the hope of turning it into the south entrance to its proposed Grammercy project. But with that project stalled, the company has shown increased interest in drawing more customers to the shopping center. Jonathon Byrd’s owner Ginny Byrd said she didn’t want to elaborate on any plans until a presentation was made before the Special Studies Committee of the Carmel Plan Commission on July 1. “We are very excited about that venture,” she said. School board changes gun policy

The Carmel Clay School Board updated many of its policies at its June 23 meeting, the most controversial of which was education the change made to its weapons policy.

The new policy allows for guns to be on school property if they are locked in the trunk or glovebox of a car and out of sight.

The change was made because the state passed a new law which will go into effect July 1, and it prohibits any school board from maintaining a policy that contradicts the new law.

During the past few weeks, many members of the community had expressed concerns and objections in various ways toward the required changes, and two attended the school board meeting.

Democratic state epresentative candidate David Russ asked, “What else will be done to keep our kids safe?”

“To me it’s very shameful that these rules were put in place. And I don’t understand the value of it,” he said.

He was concerned students will target vehicles storing the guns or use them to be heroes during dangerous situations.

Carmel resident William Frye said, “I don’t think this law brings any value to the safety of our children. Having weapons in parking lots does not enhance the safety of our schools.”

He agreed with Russ in that he fears amateurs will attempt to deal with situations that should be left to the professionals.

Although board member Greg Phillips expressed his distaste of the policy change in the previous meeting, he said, “Local policy cannot trump state law.”

Phillips did, however, encourage people with concerns to address the members of the legislature who voted for the law. He said he believes Carmel has a considerable influence and can use this influence to persuade legislators not to usurp local control of local education policy.

Phillips did oppose the policy change in the final 4-1 vote.

Supt. Nicholas Wahl took time to address concerns before the final vote.

He said, “We are changing our policy only to bring it in compliance with the new state law.

Otherwise, we would have maintained our policy that generally prohibits any possession of guns on school property.”

He encouraged anyone who was aware of a gun on school property to continue to alert school officials or law enforcement officers.

All school board members agreed they were not in favor with this new law and would continue to provide the best possible safety and security for staff, students and the community.

Ruth’s Chris closed during move

Regular diners at Ruth’s Chris Steak House knew this day would come when the restaurant announced a year ago coming soon that it would be moving to the new Ironworks building at the southwest corner of Keystone and 86th Street.

The restaurant plans to close July 26 for three weeks until it reopens on Aug. 18. But as the closure date gets nearer, the customers who often populate the restaurant and its popular bar might find themselves at a loss as to where to go.

“It’s like Cheers. I can tell you who’s in four seats on any given night. You have your Norms,” said managing partner Ryan Craig. “I have a person, if you walked up to him you’d be like, ‘Cliff Clavin?’”

Craig said the most common questions he hears are, “Are you sure the bar is going to be the same? Is it going to have the same character?”

Craig says yes, but people will need to be patient as his staff disassembles the current restaurant to move to the new location.

And he said it will be worth the wait.

The new restaurant will feature the same staff, bartenders and entertainers that the regular crowd has grown to love but without the recent drawbacks such as a leaky roof.

levels and 125 outdoor seats. The first floor will house the restaurant and bar, while the second floor will be reserved for private functions like meetings, conference or wedding-related events.

The new location will also feature a new meat cutting room to allow meats to be cut in-house.

Craig said the restaurant can cut different sizes of filets or even cut Porterhouse steaks for one to four people.

“I think this is a huge growth for us,” Craig said. “We’re getting bigger in all the ways everybody has been asking for.”

One of the most intriguing features will also be the best seat in the house – a private glassencased dining room right next to the entrance that’s free with only a reservation.

“Everyone coming in will see you,” Craig said.

And anyone concerned about parking shouldn’t be Craig said. There should be plenty of surface parking because the other Ironworks residents will utilize and underground parking lot.

Pizzology likely coming to village

Another sign of the revitalization of the Village of West Clay is likely to occur when local restaurant Pizzology announces coming soon a new location in the former Brenwick building.

The building was recently purchased by local developer Pittman Partners which has targeted Pizzology to fill the vacant space left by the former Pamfilio’s Italian restaurant.

Pizzology owner Neal Brown said he had no comment other than that he had a lease agreement in hand and that his lawyers were reviewing it.

The news is sure to make residents of the Village of West Clay happy as they have long lamented the vacancy in their limited commercial space.

Alex Cain has lived in the Village for 11 years and sells real estate for West Clay Realty. She previously told Current in Carmel it’s the perfect spot for a new restaurant.

“A new business will have a very captive audience,” she said. “The residences here are chomping at the bit. It’s all everyone talks about.

We are at the point where we’re like, ‘Please, someone come.’ Because we miss it. And now we’re not going to take it for granted.”

Walk through the Carmel Arts & Design District on a busy weekend and you’ll find families huddled around statues Public art? posing for pictures with the outdoor pieces of art.

Now, if Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard gets his way, there might be more of these public art installations throughout Carmel.

As a result of an economic recession and budget concerns, no new statues have been purchased or installed in years, but the mayor and several city councilors have said they hope that doesn’t mean the end of the city’s public arts initiative.

“We will continue to do it, especially in the roundabouts,” Brainard said. “I want to move ahead and continue our public arts program.”

There are no immediate plans, but the topic was mentioned at a recent Carmel City Council committee meeting discussing changes to the city’s comprehensive plan.

Thirteen J. Seward Johnson statues adorn Carmel’s historic downtown, two are installed at City Center and art installations fill some city roundabouts.

Some residents have raised concerns about the cost of public art, with the Johnson statues costing $80,000 each and one artwork in the roundabout at 136th Street and Range Line Road costing $80,000.

City Councilor Ron Carter said when he visits major cities around the world he sees a commitment to public art.

“People feel good when they’re around art,” he said. “Without question we need to have more outdoor art in appropriate places. I feel like we’ve done a good of putting art installations in place, but we can always do more.”

The next targeted installation would likely be as part of the Midtown Redevelopmet Plan, a proposed $100 million mix-used development which would connect the Arts & Design District and City Center along an expanded Monon Trail.

Brainard said it’s important to use artwork to promote walkability around town.

“It has to be an interesting walk to have pedestrians to walk,” he said.

Carter said he feels outdoor art is integral to the Midtown Plan.

“There’s no reason to develop Midtown and have it be a sterile environment as far as culture or art is concerned,” he said.

Brainard also said he would like the art to be integrated into new roundabout construction.

But not everyone is over the moon about the statues. In the past, TV news outlets have done several stories with man-on-street interviews calling the statues “creepy” and a “waste of money.”

Dan McFeely, a former newspaper reporter and current economic development consultant for Brainard, previously wrote that he initially thought the criticism came from “anti-Carmel zealots who hate everything about the city, or anti-Brainards who hate the mayor.”

But he later admitted that might not be the case.

“Personally, I don’t hate them,” he wrote. “And I don’t think they are creepy. But I do wonder why so many do.”

No current city councilors have come out and said they hate the statues or that they don’t support outdoor art, but some questioned whether there is enough money in the budget to support such projects.

“I love public art as much as anyone else, but when your wallet is a little tight, it’s probably not the time to be buying art work,” Councilor Rick Sharp said.

Brainard pointed out that much of the art was previously paid for through projects coming in under budget.

Councilor Luci Snyder said she loves the idea of adding more public art but would rather see citizens and local businesses contribute donations to sponsor new art in the area.

Brainard said he wouldn’t mind looking at asking commercial real estate developers to donate a small percentage of their project costs to a public art fund.

Although the mayor said he would prefer for the city to own the art because it allows them to have control over upkeep and how it is displayed.

Plus, the art should maintain its value.

“Art is an asset,” he said. “If we ever were in dire financial straits we could sell that art.”

Chris was the CEO and President of Clarke Engineering Services in Fishers and a co-founder and the CEO and President of the Verbal Behavior Center for Autism in Indianapolis. His many passions included his beloved family, competitive swimming and cycling. Chris is survived by his loving wife Jane Clarke; two daughters, Alexandra and Kate; a son, Mitchell; his mother, Shirley Clarke; Clarke a sister, Jane Barlow-Kearsley; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ian Clarke. A memorial service was conducted June 28 at Geist Christian Church in Indianapolis. On a quiet street in downtown Carmel populated with modest ranch houses, there is a revolution brewing. government Residents of Emerson Road have for years watched as their street flooded during heavy rains until the point that it becomes impassable.

One person even posted a sign that reads, “Idle zone, no wake” – the type of sign commonly aimed at boaters in harbors and bays.

“This situation is beyond ridiculous for the people who have lived here and have been waiting on a solution for years,” said Emerson Road resident Desra Simons. “This situation has been an ongoing problem since long before we moved into the neighborhood 10 1/2 years ago, and we are the new kids on the block.”

And for years residents said they have complained to city workers and elected officials about the problem needing to be fixed.

“I have e-mails from back to 2011 where the city has tried to put a Band-Aid on the problem, but has never solved the problem,” Emerson Road resident Charlie Demler said.

But now Carmel City Council President Eric Seidensticker has said that he will consider using the city’s rainy day fund to repair the stormwater situation on Emerson Road and then hopefully replenish the fund from a future utility.

“This is truly an emergency situation because, to date and although the mayor claims that there is a solution that is ready, nothing has been done to this point,” he said. “I will be bringing business to the council to appropriate money from the rainy day fund to fix the infrastructure on Emerson to resolve the flooding issue.”

Residents on Emerson Road said that in the past year the city had used a large vacuum truck to remove debris from the stormwater lines, replaced stormwater inlets and made some curb improvements - but those have not fixed the problem.

The stormwater lines on Emerson Road flow west toward Guilford Road using gravity and drain directly into Little Cool Creek which flows north and eventually empties in Cool Creek. It’s a common approach to drainage that makes use of existing waterways within each watershed.

But the section of Little Cool Creek along Emerson Road doesn’t have the water capacity it once did. Even to the casual observer it’s filled with sediment and debris, with overgrown banks so shallow that water would easily spill over during a heavy rain.

And the outfall from Emerson Road’s drains is blocked when it’s submerged under the creek.

So to prevent the Emerson Road drains from backing up with nowhere to deposit stormwater, the city would likely need to increase the capacity of Little Cool Creek through dredging and removing overgrowth, create some upstream detention areas and possibly replace some culverts in surrounding areas.

to propose creating a stormwater utility for the city that would raise money to fund infrastructure improvements by charging all households in Carmel a monthly $4.95 stormwater fee and a pro-rated monthly fee to businesses.

That idea has been held up as councilors debated the most equitable way to create the utility, but the last sticking point appears to hinge on who will control the utility’s revenues.

Councilor Luci Snyder has been adamant that the stormwater revenue only be used for stormwater improvements. She wants that specifically written into any ordinance the city passes and she wants council oversight of the funds.

Snyder said the council is considering hiring independent legal counsel to ensure it gets the desired outcome.

But all of that means little to frustrated Emerson Road residents who said they are tired of the politics and that they wanted their drains fixed yesterday.

“We are a long way from a true fix and there are still lots of places where the process can break down along the way,” Simons said. “As I told Mr. Seidensticker, I will believe it when I see them break ground in front of our house. Until then, I plan to be their worst nightmare.”

When the news broke June 25, Renee Mueller and Teresa Tibbs’ phones rang off the hook with friends and family wishing government congratulations. A federal judge had overturned Indiana’s ban on same-sex marriage.

“I didn’t think this day would ever come,” Tibbs said.

Mueller and Tibbs, who live in Carmel, were one of several couples rushing in to the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center to receive a same-sex marriage license. For many, the overturn came as a shock.

Fishers residents Angela Schaub and Dakota Baisa came with their son, Durden, shortly after finding out. After applying for a license, they waited about an hour for a judge to marry them.

Schaub and Baisa already celebrated their wedding with friends and family on June 23, 2012 – two years and two days before receiving their marriage license.

“We’ve already been referring to each other as wife and wife, but now we’ll have a piece of paper to solidify it,” Schaub said. “We have the rights that everybody else has that we should have had two years ago.”

To celebrate, Schaub suggested getting ice cream after Durden’s baseball practice that evening.

“simple.” The couple had to provide their driver’s licenses and birth certificates and be at least 18 years old. There was an initial $20 fee and an additional $80 fee to be married by a judge.

Approximately 46 same-sex marriage licenses have been issued in Hamilton County since the ban was lifted June 25.

Hours after the overturn, Hamilton County Clerk Peggy Beaver joined Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller in filing an emergency motion for a stay that would halt same-sex marriages.

Baisa said she expected an appeal, “because it’s Indiana.” That’s why she and Schaub got a license immediately.

But there’s still a “glimmer of hope,” Baisa said, noting the trend of legalizing same-sex marriage in other states.

were close to breaking. To this day, he is unable to walk barefoot and his hands sport black spots where Korean soldiers burned him with grease.

After noticing the Korean soldiers shipped in alcohol and women to entertain themselves every three weeks, Layton and the others hatched a plan to break out on the 18th week. Unfortunately, their plan was hastened when the Koreans’ schedule jumped forward a week. Layton killed the two drunken guards posted outside his hut, and the prisoners escaped the camp.

They marched in single file until a friendly aircraft spotted them and lead them to safety.

“I just got down on my knees because a black cloud of guilt came over me,” Layton said. “I was the one that had taken the two guards’ lives. I was so guilty. Not necessarily for the soldiers, but for their parents. They would never know where their sons were killed or how they were killed or where they were buried.”

‘Nobody needed to know that hurt’

This veteran and CarmelFest Parade marcher walked a long, dark road to be able to tell his story of survival

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com For many people, seeing an older veteran marching in a parade seems commonplace. But one veteran marching in cover story this year’s CarmelFest parade knows that’s he’s lucky to be there. And he has quite the story to tell.

It’s pinnacle occurred after spending roughly 17 weeks as a prisoner during the Korean War – that’s when Charles Layton promised himself a different path.

“I said to myself one day that, when I got out – and when, not if – that I would someday, everyday do something kind for people, even if it only meant a smile,” said Layton, now 85 and a resident of Noblesville.

Layton, who grew up as a “Depression baby” in the late 1920s and early ’30s, often was shunned by his family and sent away for the summer.

“I was the fifth wheel out and my sister was the (beneficiary),” Layton said. “That wasn’t a great surprise. When you get sent away every summer and have to fend for yourself on the

streets of Chicago, you build up a crust. In my personal opinion, I think the man up above prepared me for that duty in the prison camp and allowed me to digest it.”

His parents, who moved to Chicago from Frankton, Ind., after their dry cleaning business failed, had a “cult like” religion, disbelieving in the act of war and the use of doctors, he said.

Joining the Army

Layton was hired at 12 years old to ride and

break wild horses in a Chicago stockyard. Breaking one carload of horses would earn Layton $10.

At 16, he was hired to work with 11 horses on the set of MGM’s film, “This Time for Keeps,” starring Esther Williams and Jimmy Durante.

Drafted just before his 22nd birthday, Layton went through basic training at an accelerated pace to supplement the forces in Korea. Layton remembers waking up on his transport ship, bound for Japan, to the sounds of a loudspeaker blaring, “Prepare to abandon ship.”

The vessel had crashed into a tanker.

Layton and one other Army Ranger leapt overboard, much to the chagrin of fellow soldiers who knew that preparing to abandon ship wasn’t the same as actually doing so.

Despite these setbacks, Layton served as a forward observer for the 2nd Infantry Division and 7th Armored Division, scouting and calling in artillery strikes ahead of troop movement.

Upon returning home, Layton’s mother inquired as to what he had done while in the war.

When he told his mother the things he was forced to do, she kicked him out. Layton still doesn’t know when either of his parents died or where they are buried.

Layton’s shame kept him quiet for 60 years. It wasn’t until he volunteered for Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County and became friends with Tammy Elmore, director of marketing and volunteer services, that he began to reveal his story.

Not even his wife and kids knew the whole story.

“Nobody needed to know that hurt,” Layton said.

Elmore, who had heard the story, insisted he write a book about his experiences.

Two years and four months later, they had an outline and a manuscript and eventually published under Wine Press.

Layton continues to volunteer for Meals on Wheels, often delivering meals to residences himself.

“I get to know people. Sometimes I’m the only person they see all day,” Layton said. “People think doing something kind is all about the other person, but we’re receiving just as much in return.”

‘I was so guilty’

As history shows, North Korean forces eventually were able to drive a wedge into forces like Layton’s. With the decimation of U.S. Marines’ forces on his flank, Layton and his men were forced to retreat and hide in the craggy, cold mountains until their eventual capture.

Layton and 36 other men were crammed into a hut made of mud, dirt and hemp roofing. In the below-freezing temperatures of North Korea, the men were forced to either all stand or lay, with no means of staying warm except their clothing.

App–lying genius to life Commentary by Terry Anker For those of us among the uninitiated, software for the increasingly ubiquitous so-called smartphone is referred to as Apps rather than the standard desk or laptop parlance where such things are identified as “programs.” The expression is the diminutive of the software “application” that is how someone might hope to use the program to accomplish an objective.

With the game-changing introduction of the iPhone some years ago, Steve Jobs and his crew opened Apple’s smart phone’s interface to the world. Anyone that might have an interest in developing an application for use by the device was invited to do so. Rather than create barriers to folks imagining how we could live differently in a mobile and connected world – and perhaps even more importantly, rather than try to keep every potential dollar of software earnings from themselves – Apple lit a bonfire of creativity that is still burning bright. On my own phone, I can exchange a unit of measure or currency into any

other instantly. I can not only check the status of my flight but can actually see the incoming plane’s location on a map. I can watch a movie.

I can post to social media. I can buy a book then read it on my screen. There are many thousands of applications eager to be downloaded and hopeful to become indispensable. Without doubt, some are not so requisite. A quick perusal of any teenager’s phone will show a sophomoric retinue of silly games and amusing contrivances designed to pass the time.

But isn’t the lesson that sometimes an open architecture, like an open mind, can invite genius along with the distracting? My favorite is a flashlight app that uses the flash from the camera phone to light the way. I’d be app-lying if I didn’t admit I love it!

Let me start by saying how very sorry I am for your present “situation.” Though I have been through this phase with humor my own children, I had forgotten just how stressful keeping a newly-minted toddler alive is.

I’ve spent the better part of a week with three of my nieces – twins who just turned 2 and a 20-month old – and I am downright exhausted.

My house is a disaster, my new mini-van has been dutifully christened with spilled Goldfish and half a box of Kleenex, and my thankful prayers to Mother Mary for having children old enough to fend for themselves have increased tenfold. I thought I’d successfully block this own period of my life, but with this full immersion into parenting precocious rug rats, traumatic memories are returning at an astonishing rate.

My mantra for the past few days has been, “Find a happy place, find a happy place.”

But you don’t need to hear about my experiences; you’re actually living them right now.

Every nap waylaid by five minutes of shuteye on the way home from Kroger; every cell phone snagged and thrown to the tile floor; every near-drowning and third-degree sunburn at the water park; I could go on and on. Your entire life is being dictated by a funny-looking short person who can barely speak, and who doesn’t give a full diaper about you getting a good night’s sleep or a peaceful dinner out.

They really are the most selfish creatures on the planet, these tiny 2-year-olds. Your entire day must revolve around their feeding times and nap times and bath times. In between all the “times,” you must stand constant vigilance lest they decide to explore the toilet or scale a bookcase. And if you parent like my sisters, you bear the added burden of feeding your kids healthy food and entertaining them sans television. (As you know, this isn’t really my style!)

I’d also like to apologize for excluding you from most of my columns. As related above, I do not recall most of 2003 when my twins were 2. It’s the brain’s way of healing, I think.

Additionally, teenagers provide ample fodder so there’s little need to revert back to earlier parenting days.

Finally, I’d like to commend you on surviving each day with a 2-year-old, and to let you know that it will get better. Not soon, of course – I personally think the fours are the absolute worst – but eventually your child will be relatively self-sufficient and some semblance of a life will return.

Editor, Do you ever wonder if the loud, thumping music played during an exercise class is causing damage to your hearing? According to a study

by Kujawa and Lieberman in The Journal of Neuroscience, “Overexposure to intense sound can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss.”

While booming music is supposed to be motivating, consider a few facts. Federal guidelines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration set the maximum safe level for an hour, the duration of many exercise classes, at 105 decibels. You actually can determine the safety of the sound level in your class without a decibel reader.

The sound is harmful if you have to shout to hear yourself or experience ringing in your ears.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders agrees that any noise for an extended period of time above 105 deci-

bels is dangerous. Surprisingly, the International Association of Fitness Professionals determined that music during a physical workout should not measure more than 90 decibels, but many fitness clubs do not adhere to the limit.

The IFPA also recommends that an instructor’s voice, should not exceed 100 dB and that instructors should use a sound level meter to insure safety.

Getting used to loud music, however, does not lead to better hearing. Furthermore, according to the NIDCD, many people do not even recognize their own hearing loss until serious damage has happened because it occurs gradually.

It just makes sense to ask a fitness instructor to turn down the volume. After all, should exercising for the sake of your health cause you to risk your hearing?

A song to celebrate Carmel Commentary by Luci Snyder This weekend Carmel and the Palladium hosted the third annual Great American Songbook Hall of Fame induction. opinion The new inductees were Johnny Mathis, Shirley Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Nat King Cole.

These are names we all know. More than that, when they highlighted the careers of each of the four, we in the audience knew their songs, we knew their music, we knew the words and we remembered the part they played in our lives when we first heard them.

I was privileged to attend the festivities, and it was certainly glorious. Gov. Mike Pence stood and was acknowledged along with others of prominence.

Frank Basile, the chairman of the board of The Center for the Performing Arts, opened the festivities by recognizing the members of his board, the gala committee, the companies who were sponsors and the volunteers who made it all happen.

Michael Feinstein thanked the artists who were inducted into the Hall of Fame. The artists, in turn,

thanked the Feinstein Foundation for the honor.

The up-and-coming performers who showcased each honoree’s work thanked Feinstein for the chance to play the Palladium, and we all clapped to acknowledge their talent.

But when Natalie Cole thanked Michael Feinstein for providing this wonderful venue, I realized who was forgotten.

In this glorious temple of the arts, host to unique events, competitions and performances, the citizens of Carmel were forgotten.

We have no major donor here, no company for which the Palladium is named, no million-dollar endowment. This venue was created and is supported by the citizens of our small city for evenings like we just witnessed. Small wonder that Natalie Cole didn’t realize that – it is so very rare.

So sing a song in celebration of the citizens of Carmel and the arts they support.

Legendary singers inducted into Songbook Hall of Fame On June 21, the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame inducted Linda Ronstadt, Shirley Jones, Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole posthumously. Daughter Natalie Cole accepted the award for her father.

Linda Ronstadt, who was unable to attend because of health reasons, was awarded the 2014 New Standard Award. This award is given to performers who have written or performed songs that stand the test of time and become pop standards.

Ronstadt, considered to be one of the most versatile vocalists of her era, has created 31 gold and platinum records and earned 10 Grammy Awards. She also was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

Johnny Mathis was also awarded the 2014 New Standard Award. Mathis is the world’s best-selling living recording artist, with a career spanning a 60 years. He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame twice for his songs “Chances Are” and “Misty.”

The 2014 Legend Award was given to a performer who made a significant contribution to the world of music through the 1960s. It was presented posthumously to Nat King Cole who had one of the most identifiable voices in American music.

Cole recorded more than 150 chart-topping singles on Billboard’s Pop, R&B and Country charts. In 1956, he made history by becoming the first African-American to host a national network television series. In the early 1990s, Natalie Cole added her vocals to her dad’s song “Unforgettable,” a creative effort that garnered seven Grammy Awards.

Jones, the film, television and Broadway star, also was inducted into the 2014 Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Jones received an Academy Award for her role, Lulu Bains, in “Elmer Gantry.”

Jones is also known for her role on “The Partridge Family” and several hits with David Cassidy, including the song, “I Think I Love You.” Before the performance at the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Awards, the newly installed Hall of Fame Awards Wall was unveiled. Funds for the installation and creation of the wall were provided Charles and Alice Simons of Kokomo.

The after parties were stationed around the Palladium as five distinct night clubs: Great American Songbook Lounge with the sounds of the Cool City Band; Caliente Club with DJ Aztecprinz; The Club Katz with the Souled Out Band; Sidecar Lounge with Janese Truver and Steve Quinn; and The Humidor Lounge for bourbon and cigar aficionados.

The Awards show itself was dazzling with its array of talent, with Jessica Sanchez of American Idol fame, Canadian performer Denzal Sinclaire, Broadway star Laura Osnes, singer-songwriter Peter Cincotti and Julia Goodwin, winner of the 2013 Great American Songbook High School Competition. Michael Feinstein emceed the event.

For the third year, the event was presented by Krieg Devault, with support by Katz, Sapper and Miller and First Merchants. All proceeds from the event benefit the Center for the Performing Arts.

“A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement” will be the fourth and funniest installment yet of this popular series, and it opens July 5.

No one can dish out love, life and a casserole like the Church Basement Ladies.

Set in 1960, in “A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement” the gals are once again required to face the challenges of change head-on. Beverly is turning 15 and gets her first pair of high heels for confirmation; Karin is finally learning how to drive; Mrs. Snustad and Mrs. Gilmerson plan a food booth at the county fair to raise money, and the pastor announces his impending nuptials.

Against the shifting tide, these pillars of the church stand strong in their faith and in their friendships with more crazy antics, more great new songs and more lessons reluctantly learned.

Patriotic Cheesecake Squares Crust: 1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs, 7 TB butter, melted, 2 TB sugar Filling: 12 oz. cream cheese, softened, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 large eggs, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, 1 cup strawberry jam, 1-pint blueberries Directions: Preheat oven to 360 degrees. Grease a 9-inch square-baking pan. Line the pan with foil, extending it over the rim; grease foil. In bowl, with fork, stir graham-cracker crumbs, butter and sugar until blended. Press mixture onto bottom of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Let it cool. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese at medium speed until smooth; gradually beat in sugar. Mix in eggs and vanilla until blended.

Pour filling over crust; bake 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool completely and chill until ready to serve. Place jam in small saucepan; cook over low heat, stirring, until liquid. Strain; cool slightly. Pour into a plastic bag; seal. When cheesecake is cold, lift foil with cake out of pan. Place on cutting board and peel away foil; cut cake into 12 pieces. To decorate, place berries in the top left corner of each bar. Snip a small hole in corner of plastic bag; pipe jam in stripes around berries to create a flag like decoration.

Simple facts about dehydration Commentary by Dr. Lisa Youngblood

With more opportunities to be outside during the summer, dehydration is a concern for some people – especially wellness older adults, young children and those who exercise or work outdoors. Dehydration means the body doesn’t have the fluids necessary to keep its systems working properly. Fluids are important to nearly every bodily function, including maintaining the right body temperature and flushing waste.

It’s easy to tell if you are getting enough fluids by looking at the color of your urine.

Clear or light yellow urine indicates ample hydration. Dark yellow urine means you are not taking in adequate water and fluids.

Preventing dehydration All liquids keep the body hydrated. The majority of your total water intake (approximately 80 percent) comes from water and other beverages you drink. The remaining 20 percent comes from food. To prevent dehydration, you should drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water or other fluids every day.

You may need to drink more water when exercising, especially in hot weather, or if you have the flu or another health problem, such as a urinary tract infection. To help keep children hydrated, low-sugar popsicles are a good option. Be sure kids have plenty of wa-

ter and sports drinks when playing sports in warm weather. Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding also should increase their water intake.

Helpful ways to drink more water each day include: • Drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up each morning.

• Keeping a glass of water or a water bottle with you at work, in the car or when running errands. This encourages frequent sipping throughout the day.

• Adding packets of sugarless flavoring to water for variety. You can also flavor water with lemon or lime wedges or cucumber slices.

Drinking water is not the only way to stay hydrated. Many foods contain water. Some good alternate sources are low-sodium soup and broth, grapes, grapefruit, watermelon, and fruit juice. Surprisingly, meats, including hamburger and chicken breast, contain high concentrations of water.

If dehydration is an ongoing issue for you, be sure to consult your primary care doctor.

In the event that a health emergency does arise this summer, area hospitals are ready to help, no matter the hour.

Most facilities, like St.Vincent Carmel Hospital, provide expedient and friendly injury care – up to and including those ailments emanating from participation in sports. And summer is about a lot of activities, sports among them.

So this season, keep your health by: • Keeping an eye on your surroundings. Even something as seemingly innocent as running through a field can cause ankle or knee sprains if the runner unwittingly steps into a depression in the ground.

• Drinking plenty of water. Young children, pregnant and lactating mothers, athletes and the elderly are most prone to dehydration during summer months. It seems simple enough, but we always remind: You must replenish want you expend.

• Avoiding the peak hours of sun and heat if at all possible. On a given afternoon, with partly cloudy skies, the hours of 2 to 4 p.m. will deliver the highest temperatures.

• Applying sunscreen liberally and often. No

In my previous column, I provided a list of some questions that would be important to understand and know if you’re finance contemplating enlisting the services of a qualified financial professional.

I’ll take this week to round out the list of important questions that you might want to consider when evaluating a potential advisor.

How are you paid?

This is usually the 800-pound elephant in clients’ minds when they think about working with an advisor. Make sure you clearly understand how and how often your advisor is compensated.

Is there an initial planning fee or is there “no charge for financial planning?” My sales radar always goes up when I hear the words “free” or “no charge.”

What that typically means is that the advisor must sell you something in order to get paid.

Whether it’s insurance or investment-related, if they’re not charging a fee for their service, the pressure is on even more to sell you a product in order for revenue to be generated for that advisor.

That doesn’t make this business model wrong — it just means you need to be aware that there is no such thing as free and that, depending on their business model, certain products may be positioned to you that aren’t necessarily in your best interest but are done so anyways to generate fees and commissions for the advisor.

What do I get for your services?

If you’re working with a true financial planner who is providing comprehensive financial planning services, ask to see a copy of a sample financial plan that fits a similar client profile to your circumstances.

Having a working financial plan allows both the advisor and client to clearly see the longterm effects of the solutions that are proposed by the advisor rather than just looking at a single investment proposal or illustration.

Are you a fiduciary?

A fiduciary is someone who has a legal obligation to place their clients’ best interest ahead

of their own. They must also fully disclose what their fees are, how they’re compensated and whether they have any conflicts of interest.

Here’s how you can tell: if you are paying them a flat fee or they are assessing management fees on investments, they are most likely acting as an “investment advisor” or “investment advisor representative,”, thus qualifying them as a fiduciary.

If they are taking commissions on the sales of securities/products, they are acting as a registered representative of a broker/dealer and thus do not have a fiduciary obligation to you but rather a suitability obligation.

This is a slight but very distinct difference, and here’s why: even if there was a lower cost investment solution for you, they could sell you the higher commissioned product as long as they can demonstrate that the investment was “suitable” for you.

A fiduciary would have the legal obligation to offer you the lower cost alternative.

For instance, the insurance industry does not operate as a fiduciary.

Question everything The complicated part of this business is that advisors can “wear both hats.” That is to say we can be “dual registered” advisors and be both registered reps and investment advisor representatives. In full disclosure, I operate a duallyregistered firm offering both commissioned and fee-based solutions for our clients.

The important quality to have in any advisory relationship is transparency and the best way to obtain that is to ask questions. The more questions you ask, the better off you’re going to be.

There is no such thing as asking too many questions in the beginning of a relationship, and any advisor that tells you differently is quite possibly hiding an answer or information that they don’t want to disclose. In that situation, your best bet is to sever ties and look elsewhere.

Hearts and minds in the Pantheon Commentary by Don Knebel

In 1744, King Louis XV promised Madame de Pompadour, his official mistress, a new church honoring St. Genevieve, the patron travel saint of Paris, if he survived his mysterious illness. He recovered and the resulting Pantheon, named for a pagan temple and honoring the best minds in France, reflects the vagaries of French religious politics.

Louis put his mistress’s brother in charge of making good on his promised church. He laid the cornerstone for the building in 1764, the year Madame de Pompadour, famous for her hair style, died. The neoclassical design, in the shape of the Greek cross, drew inspiration from London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral. Because of a depleted treasury, the church remained unfinished when Louis XV died in 1774. His successor, grandson Louis XVI, loaned his bankrupt government 4 million francs to finish it.

When the church was finally completed in 1790, it featured a massive triple dome, supported on 258 columns, extending 268 feet above the street. By that time, the French Revolution was in full swing, railing against the power of royalty and the Catholic Church. In 1791, the newly constituted National Constituent Assembly ordered

that the church be transformed into a mausoleum honoring French heroes. The building took its new name, meaning “all the gods,” from the domed Pantheon in Rome. In 1792, Louis XVI was beheaded for the claimed excesses of his reign.

Twice since 1791, the Pantheon was converted to a church, each time reverting to a mausoleum as sentiments changed. Remains from 50 distinguished French intellectuals, including Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Madame Curie, are now enshrined in the Pantheon’s crypt. For six, only their hearts made it, manifesting the practice of removing organs before embalming.

The remains of Descartes, whose transfer was authorized in 1792, have yet to arrive.

The United States Capitol architect visited the Pantheon in 1838 and made liberal use of its design concepts in the rebuilt Capitol dome. In 1851, French physicist Leon Foucault demonstrated the earth’s rotation by suspending his famous pendulum from the center of the Pantheon’s dome.

July seems to be an emotional month for many. The temperatures are high, humidity soars and luxury outdoor living indoors becomes a little uncomfortable as a result. Even with soaring pergolas with outdoor ceiling fans and cantilever umbrellas, escaping the heat can be challenging.

Many of us delay grilling, dining and elegant entertaining until after 8 p.m. when it cools and the breeze picks up.

FREEDOM My grateful perspective is that we deliberately enjoy the freedom to grill, hang out on our patios and attend freedom festivals and parades celebrating the Fourth of July. We pause a moment to reflect and to thank those in the military service past, present and future for what they have sacrificed that allows us to live in the greatest nation in the world.

OUTDOOR SPACE Let this tasteful patio and surrounding landscape be a small testament to our freedoms.

Preparing for a home remodel Commentary by David Decker Many homeowners are as nervous as they are excited about beginning a new remodeling project. Inconvenience, messiness indoors and disruptions can sometimes be a very real part of a remodel; this is especially true of kitchen and bathroom projects.

However, there are a few preparations and strategies you can implement to make the remodeling process go a little more smoothly for your family.

Organization is key to living in the midst of a home remodeling project. First of all, you must clear everything from the countertops, cabinets, walls and other places where personal items may get in the way of construction. It’s a good idea to pack these items in clearly labeled boxes and store them in an easy to access place. That way, you’ll be able to find the things you need quickly.

In the kitchen, food preparation is likely going to be the most difficult part of your kitchen remodel. First, choose a new area to house your refrigerator. You may not have access to your oven or stovetop. To compensate, you might have to rely on microwaved, grilled or slowcooked meals for a while.

When it comes to the bathroom, you may want to negotiate a temporary utility sink or shower, if your primary bathroom is being reno-

vated. Typically bathrooms become unusable after demo the very first day. Indy Eleven to be grand marshals

We just might be a basketball state with a soccer “problem.”

In recognition of the latter sport’s prominent rise in recent years – not only in Carmel and central Indiana, but also across the state – CarmelFest 2014 officials have named Indy Eleven players as grand marshals of this year’s Fourth of July parade.

The Indy Eleven organization, owned by Carmel resident Ersal Ozdemir, is in the midst of its first season in the professional North American Soccer League, and while the team has recorded 4 draws and 5 losses so far, it has sold out every home game and has a sizeable following.

“It’s been unbelievable. They’ve come out in droves. For such a new team to already get that amount of fans … it’s unexpected,” said Eleven defender Chris Estridge, a Brownsburg native who joined the team during the preseason and now is a Carmel resident.

The team has received support and recognition from the city as well as traveling fans, and now CarmelFest.

“I always knew that soccer had a strong support statewide,” said Coach Juergen Sommer, also a Carmel resident. Sommer was a former U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper and has coached for Indiana University. In 2005, he was inducted into the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame.

Participants in the Freedom Run on July 4 will be greeted by an array of American flags as they race toward the finish line.

This event is a 4.5-mile race that kicks off the CarmelFest Independence Day activities each year. This year, the race starts at 8 a.m. at Carmel High School and finishes in the same spot.

The course will take runners through Old Town, down the Monon Trail to City Hall and back up Range Line Road to the high school.

Drivers should expect road blocks in that area of town before 9 a.m. the morning of the race.

Several participants, it is anticipated, will dress in Fourth of July-themed clothing for the competition. And it’s not uncommon to see others dressed as Uncle Sam or the Statue of Liberty.

“We try to make it fun for the whole family.

It’s a great way to kick off the Fourth of July activities,” said Freedom Run Race Director Don Carr.

The run got its start at a time when CarmelFest partnered with Indianapolis county music radio station HANK-FM (97.1). The race has continued the tradition with the help of other CarmelFest partners for the past eight years.

The Freedom Run also features a 1.5-mile walk for people who do not wish to run, but still want to participate, as well as a children’s fun run.

his love of soccer around the age of 3 or 4 when playing for a local league in Zionsville. He stuck with it through college and now is a part of the team.

“It’s my best experience so far. To play and represent my own city is unique,” Sprenkel said.

The team plans to continue to build its organization from the ground up, focusing on team building and continuing to look for high-quality players.

In the future the team wants to build a training facility and stadium, and possibly start a women’s team, too.

Ozdemir said the Indy Eleven look forward to providing the city and state with great experiences for years to come.

“We are very happy and thankful for Indiana to accept the world’s game,” Ozdemir said.

The walk course – which doesn’t stray from high school property - starts at 8:05 a.m. and the kids’ fun run starts at 9:15 a.m. The kids’ run is free and open to children ages 10 and younger.

Awards will be given to the top three runners in each age category. There also will be awards given for the most creative Fourth of Julythemed outfit among the participants.

Participants will receive an event T-shirt and goodie bag. Refreshments will be provided following the race.

Registration prior to July 3 is $20 and $15 for any additional family members.

Runners can still register the morning of the event, but there will be an extra $5 fee.

By Gary Boskovich • news@currentincarmel.com When you talk to Jack Badger, it’s absolutely clear that he loves Carmel. He’s lived here for 46 years and has become a valued member of the community.

And he said his annual involvement with CarmelFest and selling Spark Buttons to help offset the cost of Carmel’s Fourth of July fireworks display is one of his favorite volunteer activities.

But this will be the final year for Badger’s participation in that program. He will be turning 80 soon and he said feels it’s time to turn the reigns over to someone else.

Whoever that is will be hard pressed to match Jack’s energy and passion for selling those Spark Buttons.

So if you see Badger celebrating at CarmelFest this year, make sure to stop and thank him.

Parade floats will be entertaining

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com Get ready for one incredibly varied Fourth of July parade at this year’s CarmelFest, featuring displays from all kinds of communities, organizations and individuals.

One such individual, rather than construct a float, will be bringing his own vehicle.

Having worked as a mechanic his entire adult life, it only made sense that Bob Van Note of Indianapolis became interested in the hobby of automobile body building. This hobby, over the course of four to five years led to the construction of his own 1925 Miller Sprint car, which Note will drive in the CarmelFest parade.

“Any time I can go to a parade, I go,” Note said.

The Indianapolis Chinese Community Center will also be joining the festivities as it brings a celebration of cultural awareness, including a classic dragon puppet-and-drum dance.

“We want to show we’re part of this city and help develop the community,” said Ming Ye, president of the center and a Carmel resident.

One of Carmel’s sister cities is Xiangyang in the Hubei province of China.

Also featured in the parade will be the portion of the World Trade Center I-beam planned to be installed as part of a Noblesville memorial to fallen firefighters.

The memorial, which will also feature a statue of a grieving firefighter created by Arizona sculptor Nicholas Wilson, received a $12,000 donation

“When those buildings went down, I remember saying to the guys, ‘They just killed a lot of firefighters,’” said Mike Cook, battalion chief of B Crew at the Noblesville Fire Dept. “Being able to memorialize the fallen firefighters means a lot.”

This model suits Ahlrichs to a T

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com Those looking for a blast from the past during this year’s Fourth of July CarmelFest parade won’t have to look too far, especially if they enjoy classic cars such as the Ford Model T. Carmel resident Karl Ahlrichs will be driving one such vehicle, synonymous with mass production and the American spirit, in the parade. It will be the car’s first parade appearance.

“The car is the first vehicle I ever drove when I was 12,” Ahlrichs said. “It’s been a part of my life forever.”

Ahlrichs, who grew up playing on his grandfather’s farm every summer, first encountered the car at the age of five.

The vehicle had been bought for $50 from a previous owner by his grandfather in 1955, the Ahlrichs same year Ahlrichs was born.

Ahlrichs’ grandfather owned another Model T before then. He was late to his own wedding in 1927 when he decided to stop by a Ford dealership to purchase one.

To this day, the original owner’s registration is on the car’s steering column. The tools used to maintain it over the decades remain, too.

To anyone who knows him, Ahlrichs seems like the perfect fit for a parade.

“Anyone who owns a classic car knows that when you’re driving around in it, you have to

wave and smile a lot,” Ahlrichs said.

Ahlrichs also will likely be fielding many questions from curious onlookers and classic-car fans.

“They’ll say, ‘How do you drive this thing?’”

Ahlrichs said. “The car is a big hit in my neighborhood. I treat it like a tall go-kart. Kids are welcome to climb in. It’s not a perfectly massaged beauty queen. It’s a happily used, fully functioning, pretty-much original Model T.” The Model T operates with an accelerator attached to the steering column, much like a modern turn signal.

“In its entire life, this car has always run,” Ahlrichs said. “It has never been nonfunctioning.

It’s been beat up, dirty, never rusty. It has always been where I could pump up the tires, put in gas, water in the radiator, pull it by the tractor and it would get going.”

Festival has come a long way since the stilt walker

CarmelFest has grown in attendance from 150 to 60,000

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com All great things take time, and CarmelFest is no exception, according to festival committee members past and present.

The origin of the event dates to before 1900, as the formerly small town of Bethlehem celebrated with cake walks, horse shows and its own parades. Though larger parades and the addition of street fairs eventually were implemented, it wasn’t until the late 1980s that the festival was renamed CarmelFest.

The first official CarmelFest was orchestrated by then Mayor Dottie Hancock and then Carmel Chamber of Commerce Director Nancy Blondin. It was conducted in a vacant parking lot that eventually would become City Hall.

Only 150 people attended that year.

Despite the lackluster turnout, the festival continued to grow each year. Moving from the vacant lot to the high school, then to Civic Square for four years under the direction of Mayor Ted Johnson, the festival, known as “CarmelFest at the Fountain” largely was managed by citizens of Carmel.

It wasn’t until the Rotary Club of Carmel took over that the festival began to really take off.

events in Hamilton County,” said Gary Frey, former chairman for the festival from 2008 to 2011.

“Every Rotary Club in the county has heard of CarmelFest.”

From humble beginnings “CarmelFest remained a relatively sparse affair until recent years, with only one stage for entertainment and a handful of entertainers for younger attendees.

There’d be a stilt walker or a magician, and that’s about it,” said Jeff Worrell, current chairman of the festival.

“Back in our early days we might have had a dump truck, a cement truck, things that weren’t all that entertaining. Over the years, we’ve tried to make the parade have an entertainment component rather than just ‘things.’”

One of the benefits Increased diversity in Carmel also has impacted the growth of the festival.

“That’s probably one of the benefits of living in Carmel … the diversity we do have, which many people probably don’t understand,” Worrell said.

“The groups that come out and participate in the festival, it’s wide-ranging. We’re lucky to have some cultural groups that want to showcase their history and their culture to the parade guests, and they do that very well.”

One of CarmelFest’s major attractions always has been the parade marshals, according to Worrell.

Richard Jewell, the man falsely accused of orchestrating the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing, was honored as the Grand Marshal in 2001 in accordance with that year’s theme of “Unsung Heroes.”

Jewell was responsible for discovering the bag containing the bomb and alerting Georgia Bureau of Investigations authorities, resulting in the evacuation of numerous potential victims.

What’s next?

Now festival committee members are looking toward the future of the festival with an eye on the inevitable expansion that will be necessary to accommodate the demand of 30,000 visitors a day.

“I’m worried I’ll have to shoot the fireworks from somewhere like Kokomo,” Worrell said.

“We’re just running out of land big enough.”

Diane Norton: ‘Lady sailor in heels’

By Jessica Fox • jessica@currentincarmel.com Participating in the CarmelFest 2014 parade has a special meaning for U.S. Navy veteran “Chief Petty Officer” Diane Norton.

Norton, 60, is originally from Newton Falls, Ohio. She is married with one daughter.

For the past six or seven years, Norton has puton her uniform to participate in the Parade.

This parade is important to her because she gets the opportunity to honor those who have served that never got the chance to participate in a parade of their own.

“It makes me feel good to honor those who did not have the chance … all the wonderful people who never got a parade,” Norton said.

Norton grew up in Newton Falls, Ohio, often known as Zip City. It’s the only city in the United States to have all five digits of its zip code be the same numeral.

When Norton first joined the Navy, women were not permitted on ships, and she never had sea duty. Norton spent a lot of her time in the Navy working in administration and at Navy reserve centers.

Norton said that her time spent in the Navy was ultra-rewarding. She had the opportunity to travel to the East and West coasts, London, Italy and Japan, among others places.

“I wish I had more access to prior military veterans to let them know about the parade,”

Norton has many fond memories of the parade and would like others to have the opportunity to have them as well.

One of her favorite memories occurred last year while walking the route. A lot of children usually come up and high-five the military members and veterans. A little boy with arm braces went up to give her a high five. A few weeks later she found out the boy was recovering from cancer.

It’s moments like those that make the parade all the more special to Norton.

Norton now works with Bill McCain Appraisals and Real Estate in Broad Ripple and she also is a part-time nanny.

In his 20 years overseeing CarmelFest fireworks, outgoing festival Chairman Jeff Worrell said it’s one the biggest shows he’s ever seen.

The CarmelFest fireworks show at 9:45 p.m. July 4 will discharge 1,400 mortar tubes of fireworks, each synchronized to music broadcast from by Carmel High School radio station (WHJE-FM, 91.3).

More than 600 shells will be shot skyward for the celebration’s grand finale.

“We fill an entire parking lot with just racks and racks of mortar tubes,” Worrell said. “And each tube has a wire connected to a control booth that’s far away, connected to a computer.”

In the past, the fireworks celebration, whose cost today approaches $37,500, operated with only 15 mortar tubes. Each tube would be lit with a flare.

“We had runners and lighters,” Worrell said. “We had all the extra shells covered by a fireproof tarp, because stuff is raining down on you when you’re firing. In those days they were really slow.”

CarmelFest contracts for the services of Melrose Pyrotechnics, an award-winning fireworks company that has conducted shows for the Super Bowl, Taste of Chicago and Indy Racing League. Its work has taken its technicians to foreign nations, including Korea, Singapore and Japan, where Melrose staged the Okinawa Fireworks Festival.

day to a “secret location,” Worrell said. The team works all day until just before 9:45 p.m., when the Carmel Symphony Orchestra hits its last note, the simulcast cranks up and the show begins.

“You’re seeing product built specially for us,” said Garry Poe, event producer for Melrose Pyrotechnics. “It’s more than just red, yellow, blue, green. We treat it like a canvas, so we’re not just shooting to the same spot.”

Worrell disputes the stereotype of fanatical carnies working a fireworks celebration.

“They are extremely professional,” Worrell said.

“When I go to the shoot site, I have to do certain things before I can enter the blast zone, like turning off cell phones, my walkie-talkie. I have

to be escorted by security. I swear, if it weren’t 98 degrees, these guys would be in suits and ties, that’s how professional they are.”

Even the Department of Homeland Security plays a role in the celebration’s security, including monitoring the truck that delivers the fireworks from northern Indiana.

Worrell said he’s proud of the community’s deep investment in the fireworks celebration.

“In other communities, the fireworks would be sponsored by some huge corporation who throws whatever amount of money at it, and we’re saying, ‘Hey, would you buy a $3 unlighted, $6 lighted spark button,’ and people don’t even bat an eye,” Worrell said.

Trash Troopers keep festival clean

By Jessica Fox • jessica@currentincarmel.com Anyone who has witnessed the cleanup effort that goes on at CarmelFest and after the event is over knows that the city owes a debt of gratitude to the Trash Troopers.

While picking up trash has never been a glamorous job, Trash Troopers founder Gary Frey, a Carmel resident and formerly a chairman of CarmelFest, said he wanted to make the job a little more appealing.

Coming from a military background, Frey envisioned men in camouflage T-shirts and big floppy hats. They would have slogans on the back such as, “Have you hugged a Trash Trooper today?”

This was Frey’s way to prompt community members to volunteer and to promote the festival.

“We try to turn something nasty and dirty into fun,” he said.

Volunteers only have to work in two-hour shifts, and they only have to pick up trash and replace the bags in trash barrels.

Two years ago Frey had a memorable experience while he led that year’s group of Trash Troopers. He was in the beer tent in the North Zone, when a man asked him how he could get one of the hats and T-shirts that said, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”

Frey told him to give them two hours of his time. The man volunteered for about five hours that day. This same man came back and volun-

teered the following year. He said it was some of the most fun he’d ever had.

“The guys who lead it make it fun,” Frey said.

Steve Lawson had volunteered for the Trash Troopers before they were called Trash Troopers.

“Gary Frey took the least desirable job and made it cool. It’s the biggest event in Carmel so it takes a lot of hands and a lot of people,” Lawson said.

This will be the fourth year that the Trash Troopers have been involved with CarmelFest.

Frey plans to continue the tradition of the Trash Troopers at CarmelFest for years to come.

“If someone asks you to serve the community as a Trash Trooper, just say ‘Yes,’” he said.

Festival food has offerings from ethnic to sweet

By Jessica Fox • jessica@currentincarmel.com From sweet to spicy, this year’s food vendors will offer an array of flavorful selections. And although people can find a corn dog or an elephant ear, there’s a vast selection of other delights planned for sale at CarmelFest 2014`.

Schnitzels and Giggles is traveling all the way from New Hampshire to provide authentic German food to festivalgoers.

Alexandra Graf, Robert Graf and their children, Daphne and Meagan, dress up in German attire and offer classic as well as unique German food.

While the Grafs usually stay predominantly along the East Coast for events and festivals, they decided they would do something new and visit the Midwest.

“We are excited about being in a new territory,” Alexandra Graf said.

Some of their featured items will include schnitzel on a stick, bratwursts and potato pancakes.

Meanwhile, Cobb’s Cajun Cooking will be returning again this year. Some of its featured items will be shrimp jambalaya, Cajun walleye and tenderloin with Louisiana seasoning.

“I get all my seasonings straight from Louisiana,” said Gary Cobb said of the Indianapolis restaurant.

Cobb’s will also feature an alligator cabob, or alligator tail meat on a stick.

CarmelFest 2014 attendees won’t want for options during this year’s event. A host of new and returning vendors are prepared to sell their wares.

It’s not all knickknacks and gag gifts, though. a mothe and son duo plan to unload wares at CarmelFest, andthey have no worries that kids and adults alike will flock to its booth.

Kay Fisher of Noblesville began her business, Artfully Dished Up, four years ago after taking a crack at making her own decorative plates, which sell for $10 each. Family members praised her work, encouraging her to sell them.

Soon after, her son, Ben Fisher, decided he needed to start selling his own product. Inspired by books and films such as The Hunger Games, with protagonist Katniss Everdeen utilizing expert archery skills, Ben Fisher began Bullseye Bows & Arrows. Featured as kid-friendly bows made of PVC pipe and stuffed arrows, the product has proven to be a huge hit with younger kids and parents.

“Ben sold around 300 bows and arrows (at $10 apiece) at a previous show,” Kay Fisher said. “We make sure we take plenty.”

One 12-year-old customer managed to drag 10 friends to their booth. Kay would later meet the boy’s father, who said he was impressed to see so many kids playing in the backyard until

‘Guitarmelfest brings us together to just play what we want’

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com CarmelFest will play host to a wide variety of bands this year, including artists that put their own spin on famous songs, while also performing original material.

Benito DiBartoli describes his emergence as a musician as “a little bit late,” starting at the age of 17. And it wasn’t until he was 23 years old that Bartoli considered himself a professional.

DiBartoli, who’s played for top 40 blues and rock bands, moved to Indianapolis in 1997 from Pasadena, Calif., to pursue a relationship. After five children and the relationship’s failure, Bartoli continued on as a musician, playing in country, blues, wedding and R&B bands and acoustic solo efforts.

“Those gigs kept me afloat for 10 years,” DiBartoli said. “I enjoy having the variety.”

Bartoli now hopes to earn a position in famous rock and roll singer-songwriter Eddie Money’s band, replacing guitarist and longtime friend Tommy Girvin.

“I feel like Tommy’s really been grooming me for this,” DiBartoli said. “I attribute everything I am to this guy.”

According to DiBartoli, part of GuitarmelFest’s appeal lies in its freedom for the performers.

“Guitarmelfest brings us together to just play what we want, and really showcase what we’ve learned over the years,” DiBartoli said.

My Yellow Rickshaw frontman Nathan Klatt said he appreciates the festival’s ability to bring people out.

“Because CarmelFest has a good reputation, it brings a lot of people who will hear about us, and continue to build our product,” said Klatt. “Word of mouth is still king. CarmelFest certainly provides that.”

ebration, formed officially in 2009 after three friends were reunited in the Indianapolis area. The trio had spent their youth jamming in neighborhood garages and fraternity rooms until jobs and other responsibilities initially drew them apart.

The band now covers setlists of famous pop and rock songs, touting very little downtime between songs as the key to keeping the party atmosphere rolling.

Despite humble beginnings, the act of performing and creating music has become incredibly important to both Klatt and DiBartoli.

“It’s very easy to have this cavalier attitude about musicians,”

Klatt said. “When you’re playing a lot, it’s a very professional business operation, and I love it. It takes a lot of work by everybody to keep it going.”

“Every job I ever had, I’ve been fired from,” DiBartoli said. “Guitar gigs, though, I’m always on time and prepared.”

DiBartoli also will be sporting rare gear during his GuitarmelFest performance, including a 1962 Fender Stratocaster and a Fender Vibratone amp, the same model used by Stevie Ray Vaughn on his hit “Cold Shot.”

For the first time this year, the Indianapolis Radio Disney Road Crew will be performing at the Kidzone stage, offering fun and games for the entire family at 7 p.m. July 4.

Morrison of Carmel said.

Morrison has two children, which she refers to as her “touch pilots.” When there is something new being considered for the kidzone she gets their reactions to see if it will be a hit.

“They saw the Disney Road Crew perform before and are very excited,” Morrison said.

Morrison said she believes that this addition to the Kidzone will be something that audience members will not easily forget.

“As a committee member, I encourage everyone to come out. There are so many activities for all age groups and we’re always looking for feedback from people,” Morrison said.

Other than Radio Disney, there will also be familiar acts returning to the Kidzone stage. Some include performances by the International Talent Academy, the Indiana Jim Animal Show and Master Yoo’s world-class Taekwondo.

Current in Carmel talked to six of the 30 semifinalists in varying age groups to get their takes on the event.

Ages 12 and younger JACK DUCAT - He is an upcoming sixth-grader at Creekside Middle School.

About the competition: “I’ve loved singing for a long time and decided to give it a try.”

Song choice: “Let it Be” or “Feeling Good.” “They bring out my range and show the maturity of my voice.”

If he were to win: “It would be so cool to win, but even if I don’t win I will be proud of myself for doing it.”

CARLY BROOKE - She is originally from Beech Grove and will be entering the seventh grade at St. Jude Catholic School in Indianapolis.

About the competition: “I just love singing and wanted to expand my horizons.”

Musical influences: She really loves country music, including efforts of the Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash.

Performance experience: She has been competing since she was eight years old. She has won the Marion County Fair competition four years in a row.

NYRA DAWSON - She is an upcoming junior at Fishers High School.

Getting started: Her love of music started when she was only 5 years old. She used to sing on her father’s piano. He taught her to play and told her that she had his ear.

Why she got involved: “It’s nice to share my talent with the community. I never get the chance unless (I’m singing) with the choir.”

Other interests: “I’m really girly… I like doing makeup and hair.”

Musical influences: Pop, jazz and rhythm and blues.

Ages 18 and older SUSAN MERRIMAN - She is the 58-yearold owner of Breathe LLC, a one-woman massage studio in Carmel. Originally from South Bend, she is married with five grandchildren.

How she got started: Started singing when she was 5. She has two older sisters, and their parents taught them to sing in three-part harmony. “We performed at church functions and for my grandparents when we visited, and in the car on long drives.”

Song of choice: “Something to Talk About” by Bonnie Raitt.

“I’ve performed it before and know it well. I also really like the song. It has an upbeat feel and it’s age appropriate!

There aren’t any pop tunes by 50-somethings these days.”

If she wins: “I’m truly doing it for fun, so if I actually win it would be amazing and very encouraging for me to pursue bringing music back into my life after years of keeping it on the back burner.”

GARY GILLESPIE - He is a 72-year-old Indianapolis native and he graduated from Speedway High School.

Musical background: Gary has been singing for about 55 years. In 1978 he gave up performing for a while. “I got tired of the club life.”

Since then he has played at retirement centers and churches but nothing on the scale of CarmelFest Has Talent.

Why he got involved: During the past five or six years, he has been trying to get more involved with music. He decided to get involved with CarmelFest because he could get more exposure that way.

Song choice: An Elton John song he hopes will impress the judges.

Meet the event chairs CHRIS AND KELLY LEWIS - Chris and Kelly are both professional musicians. They have been involved with music their whole lives. To pursue their musical dreams they both moved to New York after college. Chris and Kelly got involved in a jazz and a cappella group called Pieces of 8. Since then they have found ways to get involved with the local community through music. Kelly is passionate about the Music Together program. This program offers music programs for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and Chris is the Director of Programs at The Center for Performing Arts.

The future of CarmelFest has Talent: “We want to make it more like America’s got Talent,” they both said, meaning that hopefully in coming years the competition will be open to all acts as opposed to just singing.

Schedule 30 of the most entertaining acts made it through to the semi-finals. See them perform from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m July 3 at the Gazebo stage. The top 3 in each age group will perform from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Ages 13-18 ALLY T - She is a home-schooled graduate (5.0 GPA). This Carmel resident did her schooling at home in order to focus on music.

How she got started: “I got my start in community theatre. …

I feel like the stage is where I belong.”

Her performance: She will be singing her original song, “Lightning’s Striking Again.” The music video is available on iTunes. “If you want a fun summer song come listen,” she said.

If she wins: She said she plans to put the money towards a new guitar.
