Students to return to CCS campuses in fall

PANDEMIC In an email to CCS families, Supt. Michael Beresford outlined the district’s plan for the 2020-21 school year, which is set to begin in the midst of a pandemic. CCS plans to start school Aug. 11, as scheduled, and follow the traditional calendar for the school year.

The district will offer in-person classes

five days a week and provide virtual learning for students who cannot or do not feel comfortable returning to the classroom.

“We know we have students and staff with underlying health issues that will prohibit them from attending in person and some families who are concerned about their children returning to an in-person school environment,” Beresford stated.

A COVID-19 Planning Group is working on detailed procedures that will be required for students who choose to attend in person, but specifics have not been announced.

The CCS curriculum and instruction team is working to make improvements to the virtual learning format for the fall. Students finished the 2019-20 school year virtually, with the final day of in-person classes held March 13.

CCS announced the plans for reopening schools based on information from medical professionals, the Indiana Dept. of Education, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Hamilton County Health Dept.

CCS unveils state’s first electric school bus

EDUCATION That’s because CCS will be getting one all-electric bus, and Ferrand said students won’t hear it coming.

“It’s quiet. It’s a different kind of animal coming down the road,” said Ferrand, CCS director of facilities and transportation.

The bus will be used on the morning and afternoon routes and will rotate through different routes during the school year.

“So, we’ll get some exposure through the community,” Ferrand said.

CCS held a ribbon cutting June 24 at its transportation center to celebrate having the first all-electric bus on school grounds in the state. CCS is one of four districts to get a Blue Bird bus for the 2020-21 school year. The other school districts are Bartholomew, Monroe and Delphi, but the bus for CCS arrived first.

“This is exciting news for the city. It will help the air quality in Carmel,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. “Unfortunately, we are northeast of the city of Indianapolis, so a lot of prevailing winds bring a lot of bad air this way. Everything we do can help make

a difference, particularly with people’s health.”

Ferrand said CCS has been pursuing alternative fuel for its buses since 2015 and already has 24 buses using propane autogas in its fleet. Ferrand said he was excited when he learned the Indiana Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund, administered by the Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management, would help provide funding.

The bus, which was built by manufacturer Blue Bird and powered by the Cummins PowerDrive system, emits zero emissions of harmful substances such as nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter and volatile organic compounds and hydrocarbons, so Ferrand said it’s safer for the neighborhoods and the students riding on the bus.

Ferrand said its bus, which is bus No. 1 because the slot was open, can travel more than 100 miles without charging. Although not necessary, the bus will charge between the morning and afternoon routes.

The district installed two charging stations, one at its east side lot and one at its bus garage, to allow the bus to recharge in the same location where maintenance tasks are performed. Maintenance on a Blue Bird electric bus is minimal, which eliminates the need for conventional fuel, air filters and transmission service.

South Shore Clean Cities developed and submitted the successful grant application and serves as project manager for the electric school bus project. Data collected from CCS and the other three school districts will determine if other school districts will want to add one to their fleet.

CFD embraces new roles

This is all in addition to being the city department that works most directly with COVID-19 patients during medical emergencies.

CFD spokesman Tim Griffin said accepting the responsibilities made sense.

“For us, it’s a no-brainer to step into this role in the community to help (residents) understand what can protect them,” Griffin said. “It’s what we do.”

CFD has been making scheduled appearances at local businesses since April, first to discuss ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 with local business owners and then setting up booths outside to share the same information with shoppers and provide masks and hand sanitizer. Its next stops will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 25 at Rackz BBQ (5790 E. Main St.) and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 26 Mitchell’s FIsh Market (14311 Clay Terrace Blvd.).

The department has also embraced its role as contact tracers for city employees and family members on the city’s health insurance plan diagnosed with COVID-19.

The Indiana State Dept. of Health began coordinating statewide contact tracing in mid-May, but at first it could take more than a week for some people to be notified that they had potentially been exposed to

an infected person, and by then they could have unknowingly infected others, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. With CFD handling contact tracing locally, notification can take place within hours of a positive diagnosis.

“Hopefully, that prevented a lot of spread of the virus,” Brainard said.

Griffin said CFD isn’t trying to take over the state’s efforts.

“We’re doing it as a courtesy so we can be faster in our community. We can be quicker to the punch because we’re dealing with a smaller pool,” he said. “We’re not trying to be the Carmel health department. We understand the state is doing a good job.”

Fortunately, CFD hasn’t had to spend much time lately contact tracing. On June 24, Brainard said a city employee hasn’t tested positive for nearly four weeks.

“I credit that on the fact that we did a lot of early testing and we isolated people who were working together and found out who had it,” he said. “We’re continuing to do that.”

Police sculpture vandalized

According to imagPUBLIC SAFETY es shared on social media, the phrase “it can happen here” was written on the officer’s back. Red paint also was smeared on the officer’s hands and elsewhere on his uniform.

The Carmel Police Dept. declined to release specific information about the incident but said the Carmel Street Dept. was able to quickly remove the paint without

causing permanent damage.

Investigators are reviewing video footage from the area for possible evidence. The statue is on the north side of Main Street at the Monon Greenway.

“We are actively working this case and are trying to identify the person who did this,” CPD Lt. James Semester stated in an email. “No one has been arrested yet, but we hope to identify the person soon and hold him/her accountable.”

The statue by J. Seward Johnson is titled, “Oh, It’s You, Welcome.” It serves as a reminder of Frank Carey, the only Carmel police officer killed in the line of duty. Carey died in 1900 during a shootout.

Humane Society for Hamilton County breaks ground in Fishers

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Many area residents, along with city and county officials and Humane Society for Hamilton County staff, attended PETS the June 24 groundbreaking ceremony for the HSHC’s new building at 106th Street and Hague Road in Fishers.

HCHS Executive Director Rebecca Stevens said the effort to build a new shelter began in 2014.

“Six years ago, we said it out loud, and we had no clue how we’d get it done,” Stevens said. “For me, it was something I was dreaming about long before that. For about 10 years, it’s been a personal dream of mine and something I’ve been working toward.”

Stevens thanked a group of city and county officials and several donors, including Steven Cage, who donated $4 million to the project. The building will be named the Steven J. Cage Foundation Animal Wellness Center. An image of his black cat, Stanley, whom he adopted from the HCHS, will be

The Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Dept. also announced Bruce Oldham is the department’s new deputy director. He also interned at the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Dept. and then accepted a fulltime position with Johnson Oldham County Parks. He returned to Hamilton County Parks in 2005 and then became regional parks operations manager.

As deputy director, Oldham intends to encourage greater community engagement, expand park acreage and increase environmental-based programming offered by the department. He lives in Strawtown with his wife, Kendra, and three children.

3 fireworks shows — The City of Carmel will hold three fireworks shows concurrently beginning at 9:45 p.m. July 4. Fireworks will be shot into the sky from West Park for residents on the west side of town, Chase Court for those in central Carmel and Badger Fields for those in east Carmel. The show will be set to music on 91.3 FM. The music must be played through a radio to avoid a delay that will cause it not to be in sync with the show.

The Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Dept. announced Chris Stice is the organization’s UPDATE new director.

He has served as interim director since March after previous director Al Patterson retired.

Stice has worked with the Hamilton County Parks Stice and Recreation Dept. since 1995, when he started as an intern. He then became quality control director, and then deputy director in 1997.

“I want to continue to advance the field of parks and recreation in a servant-leadership manner and provide a quality environment and memorable programming for every member of our community, including those that do not have a voice,” Stice said.

Janus Golf and Batting Center gets offseason upgrades

“We have also added one new sand trap on the driving range and have started building two more,” Jamison said.

The Janus Golf and Batting Center, 1740 Willow View Rd., Noblesville, is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m.

Jamison said Lowe’s Heroes, a company-wide volunteer program, came out late in the fall of 2019 and added new carpet and landscape bricks to the miniature golf course.

“They even added a wagon wheel obstacle on one hole,” Jamison said. “They also put a lot of crushed stone around the course to make it look more finished and uniform. All the wood has been repainted, and we bought new cups for all the holes and added a golf pin flag to mark each hole number. There is also a new putting (mat) at each hole to tee off from. We have added little bug and frog yard art around the course to add some whimsy. We have all new putters and golf balls.

The batting cages have all been stocked with new baseballs and softballs.

“Not all machines will be open each day as we are trying to keep social distancing at the machines,” Jamison said. “A big plus is we have gotten rid of the quarter machines to pay for batting. Now, you pay by the hour to use the machines. That makes it so much easier on the customers and gives them more quality time in the cage.”

Jamison said a new enthusiastic team of associates work at the center.

“We are also looking forward to start having clients assist in the daily operation in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

DISPATCHES Sailor returns home — 2018 Carmel High School graduate Charles E. Conners returned home June 16, marking the end of a seven-month deployment aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. Since departing its homeport of Norfolk, Va., in November 2019, the aircraft carrier sailed in the Arabian Gulf,

Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Conners is a petty officer 3rd class in the Navy. He served as a hospital corpsman aboard the carrier.

A year of endurance Commentary by Lorene Burkhart Endurance: The ability to sustain a prolonged stressful effort or activity. How would you rate your level of SENIORS endurance right now on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest?

At the retirement home where I live, residents were quarantined in their apartments for 10 weeks (people with medical issues could have them treated, of course).

This meant that human contact was limited to three times daily when lunch, mail and dinner were delivered. Visitors could leave packages at the entrance and they were delivered.

All of this effort was to ensure that our most vulnerable population, people older than 75, would not come in contact with COVID-19. So far, it has been a successful effort, and some restrictions have been lifted.

Residents can now leave their apartments and can take walks outside as long as they wear a mask.

How was the endurance level for these elderly folks when they were accustomed to seeing family members regularly? Time will

tell what the toll has been. Those with computers were able to stay in touch via email, Skype and Zoom. Others relied on phone conversations.

The staff worked overtime, endurance at its peak, to protect and serve the residents.

When we look back on this year, everyone will have their own story of endurance.

The year isn’t even half over and we’re already wondering what the fall and winter will bring.

For those of us who like to be in control, it’s frustrating and depressing. But it’s also a lesson about life. Do we have a solid emotional base to be able to handle the ups and downs? Will our faith sustain us, no matter what? As we look at the good and the bad of this period of time, many families are rejoicing that they have discovered new meaning and closeness as they have shared activities, cooking and meal times together.

Baseball helps heal father, son relationship

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Fathers and sons have bonded over a love of baseball for generations.

That has certainly been the FAMILY case for Carmel resident Jim Serger Jr. and his father, who fittingly had a celebratory game of catch at the Field of Dreams movie site to mark a special milestone this year.

Serger’s father, Jim Serger Sr., now 73, got an offer during his playing days from the Philadelphia Phillies but chose to play baseball at the University of Cincinnati.

Serger Jr., 49, played baseball at Archbishop McNicholas High School in Cincinnati. His father coached him on teams through the years.

“Baseball has always been in our blood as a family growing up,” said Serger Jr., whose dad still lives in Cincinnati.

Yet, the younger Serger said his family hid the secret that his father was an alcoholic.

“It wasn’t something you talked about in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. It was swept under the carpet,” he said. “He functioned

fine, but he was an alcoholic and we lost that father/son relationship after baseball was done for me.”

Serger Jr. said his father eventually admitted he was an alcoholic and sought help.

“Through (Alcoholics Anonymous) and Bill Wilson’s 12 steps, my dad has been 20 years sober,” he said. “I was rooting him on the

whole time through love and support.”

The two co-authored a book called “Go The Distance” in 2011 about how their relationship was repaired. For the past several years around Father’s Day, Serger Jr. said they have celebrated his sobriety and the unconditional love a father and son have for each other.

That has included visits to Major League Baseball games in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, a trip to LSU for a University of Cincinnati game and the College World Series. One year his dad threw out the first pitch at a University of Cincinnati home game.

This year, to celebrate 20 years of sobriety, they made a trip June 11 to Field of Dreams, near Dyersville, Iowa, to celebrate.

Field of Dreams was the site of the movie of the same name where a man is troubled about his relationship with his late father.

He builds a field in an Iowa cornfield and the fantasy begins.

“We had a great game of catch, hugged and had high fives,” Serger Jr. said. “A couple of tears were shed but those are positive tears.”

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, capacity is reduced, staff members are wearing face masks and social distancing guidelines are in place. Nonprofit aims to bring joy to people, dogs battling cancer

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Beth Hohlier owns one of the longest-running businesses in Carmel’s Arts & Design District. For nearly 28 years, she’s run Muldoon’s restaurant and bar. But in her spare time, she operates a nationwide nonprofit out of her living room.

Hohlier started Wally’s Smile in 2015. The organization, which features her dog, Wally, as its mascot, creates care packages for those going through breast cancer treatment — dogs included.

“When I was going through cancer, my dog Billie was a puppy, and she was my comfort. She didn’t leave my side,” Hohlier said.

“Eventually, she got cancer, so when that happened, of course I was there for her, and that’s why I added the doggie package.”

But it wasn’t Billie who inspired her to start the nonprofit. Rather, it was a total stranger.

“When I was going through treatment, and when I would leave treatment, I always saw this older lady, completely bald, and she was having to get on public transportation,” Hohlier said. “She looked lonely, beaten down, and I thought, wow, how awful to have to go through this alone — not having a ride, not having someone to comfort you for the three hours of injections of poison.

So, I was trying to figure out a way to reach that lady and people like her. I told myself if I got through it, which I did, I was going to give back and reach that person.”

Care packages are free for anyone to send to someone they know who is going through cancer treatment, but patients also can send themselves a care package. Funded partially by donations and partially outof-pocket by Hohlier, care packages include comfort items for treatment sessions, such as socks, a blanket, hat, lip balm, water bottle, journal, queasy drops and crossword puzzles, along with Hohlier’s favorite item, a stuffed animal version of her golden retriever, Wally.

“Wally is the mascot, the face of it all.

He won a photo contest because he was smiling in a photo,” Hohlier said. “So, when we tried to come up with a name for it, everyone told me that if I put that picture in every box, it will make people smile right away. It’s pure joy.”

Kids packages include similar items, and a larger version of the stuffed Wally and dog packages include various types of toys, a collar tag, treats and a blanket. All packages include the photo of a smiling Wally.

Now cancer-free, Hohlier said she is fortunate her cancer was diagnosed at an early stage.

“I found out during my very first mammogram. I got a voicemail on my way home from the appointment saying that they saw microcalcifications on the mammogram, which is a sign of cancer in the area,” she said. “I went in and got an ultrasound, and that confirmed it. There’s no family history, so I was totally shocked. I actually canceled the appointment (for the mammogram) twice. My doctor made the appointment for me, or I wouldn’t have done it. The cancer was rapidly growing, and doctors said if I had waited a year, the conversation would have been different.”

Fortunately for Hohlier, that wasn’t the case.

“Whether you get a positive diagnosis or not, it really affects you,” she said. “It’s a very lonely time. You could have a million people around you, but it’s internal. It’s lonely, but people being around you doesn’t

make up for it. The idea of Wally’s Smile is to put a smile on their face and make them feel less alone.”

For Jocelyn Owen, the care packages did just that for her mother-in-law, Karen.

“She was diagnosed with breast cancer in September (2019) completely out of the blue,” Owen said. “Having worked with Wally’s Smile, I submitted a request for her to receive one while going through treatment.

She was going through chemotherapy a lot, and she was sitting there for four hours at a time.

“She loved (the box), and definitely appreciated it. Beth is really good about trying to find out the interests of the individual and catering it to them.”

Owen runs her own nonprofit, Braxtyn’s Bounty for Bones, which raises money for the National Canine Cancer Foundation.

“At our event every year, we feature dogs that have had cancer, and Beth’s dog has had cancer, so I reached out to see if we could tell her story,” Owen said.

Upon that meeting, Owen said she quickly became involved with Wally’s Smile in 2015, eventually leading the charge for the canine boxes that are sent to dogs with cancer.

With interest from various local corpora-

tions and organizations to volunteer their time, Hohlier said she hopes to eventually have a space for organizing and putting together each care package.

Hohlier graduated from Carmel High School and lives in Carmel, just east of the Arts & Design District, with her three dogs, Wally, Cookie and Sadie.

STILL GIVING DURING A PANDEMIC The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the operations of many nonprofits, with some halting altogether and some getting creative to stay afloat.

Wally’s Smile has been no different.

Despite delays in deliveries to cancer patients, the nonprofit is back up and running with some changes.

“We had to pause sending care packages to humans as we were having issues getting contents to fill the boxes.

That’s a big need,” Hohlier said. “We’re shipping again but still having a hard time getting supplies.”

Hohlier said she’s looking for donations of BPA-free water bottles, throw blankets, puzzle books, fuzzy socks and more. Small bottles of hand sanitizer also are being accepted. Those interested in donating can drop off items at Muldoon’s, 111 W. Main St., Suite 100, Carmel.

Too much credit?

It’s not the anthem’s fault

Commentary by Terry Anker Who are these overlords? And what do they want from us? As more and more private and public entities demand to know everything about us in order to transact any business online — and more and more of these enterprises seem to store our confidential information in a sieve — credit reporting services have found a boon. These virtual detectives lurk the web to identify and notify if someone attempts to use the information to open a new credit card account or take out a loan. Good. It can be supportive to have a Big Brother watching over our shoulder in the event that a crook has breached the database of our insurer, BMV, IRS or just about anyone that transacts on the internet, and that gap allowed for the nefarious hacker to employ our information to disguise themselves obtaining fraudulent credit and otherwise spending our reputation and hard-earned money.

So, we engage FICO and scads of other players to keep an eye on us.

They report when our bills are paid, what balance exists on the mortgage and with whom we took it. For some of us, the notifications come daily. With each movement in balance, we hear about it and see a corresponding up or down change in the overall credit score awarded — the one that determines our creditworthiness and access to loans at attractive interest rates. The problem is that there is no instruction book. The companies tasked with controlling our credit do not want us to know how they do it. Pay down debt and get a better score? Maybe. Live addicted to credit cards and get a worse score? Perhaps not. Is too much credit better than too little? Really? How can we play the game if they will not tell us (or know) the rules?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Now that we’re half way through 2020, I think I speak for all of us when I say, “Let’s burn this mother down.” But HUMOR there is a light at the proverbial tunnel. For me, at least. And vicariously for you, dear reader, because I’m about to attend Dance Nationals in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Let that sink in for a moment before you continue.

Excited by the column fodder possibilities? You should be! Not only will I be reporting on tarted-up toddlers, tweens and teenagers tapping their toes and twerking their tushes, but also the moms, who are often more bedazzled and dramatic than their daughters. It will be awkward with everyone in masks and attempting to social distance, but I think the safety measures will only increase the intense eye makeup applications and maudlin contemporary routine mishaps. Good times!

And should the unthinkable occur and the competition fail to produce any hilarious

antics, there’s always the setting. I’ll be in the Vegas of the Appalachians, friends – home to Dollywood, Paula Dean’s Lumberjack Feud Dinner Show, an upside down museum called Wonderworks, and enough ninja weapon stores, Putt-Putt courses and go-kart tracks to make many a manchild joyously weep. My keen observational skills are about to be unleashed in one of the prime people-watching places on the planet!

In the high heat and humidity of summer in the South! During a global pandemic! Be still, my beating heart!

Yes, this year has been terrible so far, but I truly believe it’s going to turn around.

Editor, Everybody these days seems to be virtue signaling, including Current in Carmel. Robert Baker’s “Reader’s View” about the national anthem is purely an identity politics tactic. How can someone so eloquently attack the national anthem with such disdain for the country that has provided opportunity for all, Including those high-priced athletes that elect to kneel?

Being a son of immigrant parents that had a sixth-grade and eighth-grade education, there was no white privilege but rather a work ethic and desire to make our family better. There were no excuses about racism or the fact that people didn’t like our ethnic origin.

My father joined the army in World War II and gladly served his country.

As a veteran, a flag was draped across his coffin. He deserved it, along with the playing of “Taps” and the national anthem.

I, for one, do not demand a change in the national anthem. The change we should demand is simple. Everyone should take personal accountability for their actions and not blame our American heritage or society, or a song, or a statue, or a social media-generated issue, or some implied racial bias.

Face truth, not a false narrative Commentary by Matt Rowe We must be careful in how we react to the killing of Floyd George and the subsequent rioting. Both should OPINION be condemned, and anyone proven guilty held accountable — especially police officers who violate the public’s trust.

However, we cannot support the false narrative that the police, as institutions, are inordinately targeting and killing black men.

Many independent studies from universities like Harvard and Michigan State, as well as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting, substantiate this.

Many community leaders seem to accept this false narrative, however, and in doing so lend credibility to it. Most community leaders have the wherewithal to get to the truth, yet too many don’t. Take, for example, the statements in an email to all parents from Dr. Michael Beresford, superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools on June 4: “As a 60-year-old white man, I cannot pretend to know or understand how personal the hurt and frustration must be ...

We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering ... racism, oppression …”

These words are irresponsible, at best.

Why? Because if you won’t face the truth and articulate it, you’ll never change it.

If racism were the real problem, Nigerian Americans wouldn’t be one of the most successful immigrant groups in the U.S. Nonetheless, Black Americans are more likely to have negative interactions with the police.

According to 2018 FBI data, Black Americans, who are only 12 percent of our population, committed 27 percent of crimes, and as much as 50 percent of some violent crimes.

According to a Heritage Foundation report from 1995, increasing crime closely mirrored the breakup of the American family, and as of 2018, some 72 percent of Black Americans were born to unwed mothers.

Black or white, fatherless boys, unwed teen mothers, drug addiction and the resulting lack of education and subsequent welfare dependence all destroy any chance at a life many Americans take for granted. These are the real root causes of the pain in our society.

Council must uphold residential zoning Editor, Two important residential rezone development proposals are coming before the Carmel City Council in July.

The Jackson’s Grant Village rezone proposal at 116th Street and Springmill Road includes townhouses and commercial development on land zoned for single-family homes. The 146th Street and Monon rezone proposal is for townhouses on land zoned for single-family homes, and at more than four times the permitted density.

The city council has not denied a residential rezone proposal in several years, and there have been many such proposals.

Furthermore, the council has rarely worked to scale back these development proposals, which have consistently violated the established zoning in regard to minimum lot size, maximum density and/or permitted uses.

There are nine city councilors. To my knowledge, five of the six incumbents have not voted against a single residential rezone proposal in at least four years. They

are Kevin Rider, Jeff Worrell, Sue Finkam, Laura Campbell and Bruce Kimball. Unless at least one of these councilors votes “no,” simple arithmetic dictates that the two upcoming proposals will pass. That is why Carmel homeowners need to apply considerable pressure on the council.

A negative vote by the city council on these proposals would finally make a statement that continual rezone approvals are indeed unacceptable, in recognition of the established residential zoning and growing public dissatisfaction with losing our zoning protections. Council should require that development proposals be much more compatible with the existing zoning. This is how a representative governing body would be expected to work.

The bottom line is that Carmel is systematically being rezoned, parcel by parcel, and homeowners and prospective homebuyers can no longer trust that the residential zoning will be upheld.

“She is so kind and funny,” Hall said. “She is honestly the most vibrant 89-year-old I have ever known. I will miss our daily chats about everything, from my kids, her daughter, grandkids and great-grand kids, to solving the world’s problems. I think she gets a little feistier every year. I always tell her I am going to be just like her when I grow up.”

Johns graduated from Noblesville High School in 1949. Her late husband, Edward “Bud” Johns, graduated from NHS in 1945.

The couple moved away after getting married but returned in 1987 to help with their parents. Her husband died in 1998.

She had volunteered at a hospital gift shop for several years when living in Michigan. Johns has one daughter, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

“Growing up in Noblesville was a sheer delight, a safe place,” she said. “A couple of years after we moved back, it went from a small place to what it is now. I love the area.”

State’s first Barricaid installed

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com A new biomedical device is designed to prevent patients who have had an invasive discectomy procedure for SURGERY herniated discs from suffering the injury again.

Dr. Paul Kraemer, a spine surgeon from Carmel’s Indiana Spine Group, conducted a discectomy and placed the Intrinsic Therapeutics’ Barricaid, a bone-anchored implant, for Kraemer the first time in early June.

“Apparently, the one we did was the sixth in the United States and the first in Indiana,” Kraemer said. “It’s been done in Europe for several years, so it’s not something brand new out of someone’s garage. That’s a fairly common thing because the regulatory pathway is a little simpler in Europe.”

Kraemer said implanting the device requires an additional procedure using a common operation all spine surgeons perform for people with herniated discs.

The device is proven to prevent reherniation by 50 percent and improve overall quality of life. The Barricaid closure device allows patients to rely less on pain medica-

In a joint announcement with SEP, Westfield Mayor Andy Cook said that Westfield will be the new location RELOCATION for the firm’s corporate headquarters. SEP, currently based in Carmel, is a software product design and development company.

It has more than 140 employees and will expand its central Indiana operations to create up to 65 new jobs with an annual average employee income of $87,000 per year by the end of 2025.

The facility will be at the southeast quadrant of U.S. 31 and 161st Street.

Internship aims to address gap

By Calina He news@currentincarmel.com With the COVID-19 pandemic canceling many 2020 internships or forcing them online, Jiffy Lube Indiana is WORKFORCE offering an opportunity for hands-on learning for high school students this summer.

Each of the 50 Jiffy Lube service centers in Indiana — including five in Carmel — has a position for a high school intern to learn skills related to the trade and potentially help fill the void of skilled technicians in Hinkle the future.

“We’re facing a shortage of skilled technicians in our business. People are focused on college and a lot of things that aren’t focused on skilled trades,” said Lonnie Hinkle, chief operating officer of Jiffy Lube Indiana. “We thought, ‘What can we do to draw more interest in the field of auto mechanics to help raise the next generation of technicians?’”

As of June 15, 11 of the internship positions in Indiana had been filled. Interns are selected after completing an application process and typically work 25 to 35 hours

per week.

“We have this geared toward 16 and 17-year-olds,” Hinke said.

Steve Sanner, the president of Jiffy Lube Indiana, said there are training modules that interns must complete.

“While the interns get extra attention, they are all expected to complete the same computer-based and hands-on training modules that our current team members must complete,” Sanner said. “The Jiffy Lube training program even provides college credit for those looking to get an associates or bachelor’s degree.”

Sanner Sanner said the internship program is based on Jiffy Lube’s Growing People Through Work Initiative.

“We are hoping that creating a formal internship program will provide structure for high school students to join our team, gain exposure to the nuances of our business model and decide if this is a potential career choice,” Sanner said. “We are growing our footprint and adding new workers every year, and we believe this program will help us to identify talented young Hoosiers looking to grow with us.”

Former Carmel resident Moli Hall gets role on NBC’s ‘Council of Dads’

“My amazing Atlanta agent, Houghton Talent, sent me the audition for the role of Payton (‘Council of Dads’) TELEVISION and I immediately went to town researching everything about the show and the role itself,” said Hall, a former Carmel resident who lives in Atlanta. “I received the audition Monday night and had less than 48 hours to research, prepare the scene and film the audition. Less than 24 hours after submitting my audition, I got word that I had booked it, and four days later I’m out in Savannah filming.

“The entire process from receiving the audition to booking and actually starting filming all happened in a week’s time. Talk about a whirlwind.”

Hall will appear in the season finale of Season 1 of NBC’s “Council of Dads” July 2 (8 p.m., WTHR-13). Hall said she had an enjoyable time on the set.

“The entire cast and crew were so warm and welcoming throughout the entire process. I still chat with some,” Hall said. “I also had never been to Savannah nor Tybee Island before, so it was truly magical to open my trailer and be looking out onto the ocean and palm trees.”

The palm trees helped ease any nervousness Hall had.

The series is based on a dying father, Scott Perry, who asks three friends to help his wife by serving as father figures to his five children after he dies from cancer.

“Because of the premise of the show, working on ‘Council of Dads’ also reminded me that family is who and what you make it and that our loved ones never truly leave us,” Hall said. “They live through us through their imprint on the world and our hearts. ‘Council of Dads’ is such a powerful example of the power of love and warm acceptance. The story of the Perry family is truly beautiful and warms the soul.

Hall previously had small roles on “The Originals” on CW and “The Walking Dead” and “Halt and Catch Fire” on AMC. Hall, who moved to Atlanta in 2016, began acting in films for her father Dan Hall’s company when she was younger.

“The amount of work in Georgia is absolutely bonkers, and it only keeps getting busier,” she said. “The tax incentives in Georgia, along with the cost of living, infrastructure and the varying scenery, makes it very appealing to producers to film here.

Hall does modeling and voiceover work as well.

“I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades and a bit of a workaholic when it comes to the film industry,” she said.

“Acting and film/TV is my true love, but the majority of my work is (voiceover) oriented or print work (modeling).”

She was the voice of the Indiana Voter campaign this year as well as in 2018.

“The last few years I have been dabbling more and more into production work, mainly directing and producing,” Hall said.

“This year, I finally opened a branch of my father’s production company, Vizmo Films, in Atlanta, and currently I’m producing and directing a series of short films for a client, and I have plans to produce a series of my own this year as well.”

Noblesville’s Ruoff Music Center is one of three sites chosen for a rare experience.

For the first time, Live CONCERTS Nation will hold a U.S. drivein concert series, offering fans a live music tailgating experience July 10-12.

The other two sites are in St. Louis and Nashville, Tenn. Brad Paisley will headline on different nights at all three sites, appearing in Noblesville July 12.

The other Ruoff concerts will include Yacht Rock Revue July 10 and Jon Pardi July 11. Guests are allowed to bring chairs, food and drinks to their zone for the parking lot concerts.

A Live Nation spokeswoman said the event can hold approximately 1,000 cars. Tickets will be available for purchase per car, with a maximum of four people permitted per car “We’re constantly looking for creative and safe ways to get back to live music,” the spokeswoman said of whether more events will be held this summer.

Diana Coffield, a Zionsville resident and costume company owner, started My Shield Masks to keep her employees busy and help with producing fashionable personal protective equipment during the coronavirus pandemic.
