Several residents and Carmel Plan Commission members expressed concerns with a proposal to build PLAN COMMISSION townhomes and single-family homes on approximately 15 acres on 106th Street east of Michigan Road. Drainage, trespassing to reach nearby businesses and density were just some of the concerns shared at the June 19 CPC meeting about the Westbridge development.

The proposal includes 41 townhomes on the west side of the property, which borders several businesses. Twenty-nine single-family homes are proposed on the east side, which is bordered by a neighborhood with less density. The Pulte homes are planned to be 1,600 to 2,000 square feet and sell for approximately $375,000.

Developer Randy Green of ISBG Capital is petitioning to rezone the site — which currently contains one home — from a residential designation to a planned unit development. PUDs are typically requested when various uses are planned on a site. Tim Ochs, an attorney who spoke on Green’s behalf, said the PUD would allow for “classical transitional zoning” between the businesses to the west and neighborhood to the east.

Ochs said development options are limited on the site because of three gas pipelines and a regulated drain that run across it. Structures are not permitted to be built on those areas, which led developers to propose a unique layout, Ochs said.

“We think there’s a real opportunity here to come up with a creative design that fits on a piece of real estate that, quite frankly, is a tough nut to crack,” he said.

Commissioners acknowledged the challenging nature of the site but peppered the developer with questions and comments, requesting additional details on several aspects.

“We don’t normally see PUD petitions come through with this many open issues,” said Commission President Brad Grabow, although he added that using townhomes to transition from a business zoning to a neighborhood “makes

Commissioner John Adams said density was his top concern, but he also had questions about landscaping and entrance points.

“The site is very, very challenging in my mind,” Adams said. “I think you’ve tried to put way too many structures on such a small property. I would hope you could tone this down and come up with something that makes more sense.”

Several nearby residents voiced concerns, too.

Tom Behringer, president of the Ashbrook homeowner’s association, said his biggest concern is drainage because water would flow from Westbridge south to his neighborhood.

He said one of the Ashbrook retention ponds already overflows its banks on occasion and sometimes pours into nearby basements.

“We’ve had a consistent problem with flooding in that area, and it’s only going to get worse in my opinion,” he said.

Commissioners sent the rezoning request to the residential committee, which next meets at 6 p.m. June 28. The full plan commission will have a final vote on the proposal after receiving a recommendation from the committee.

Mike Delph (R-Carmel), a major in the U.S. Army Reserve, received the Joint Service Achievement Medal in recognition of his service as the mission assignment operations officer Delph for the Defense Coordinating Element Region V, United States Army North. Delph served on active duty this past winter in Puerto Rico in support of Hurricane Maria relief and recovery operations.

Road trip rankings — Personal finance website WalletHub has released 2018’s Best and Worst States for Summer Road Trips. Indiana ranked among the worst states, placing 45th overall. Rankings were based on travel costs, crime and motor accident rates, and access to recreational activities. Wyoming topped the list, primarily because of its low travel costs.

Carmel amends solicitor law; Girl Scouts worry about impact

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com When Girl Scout cookie season rolls around next year, troop members selling the treats door-to-door in Carmel will need a license and a criminal history report to COUNCIL NEWS avoid violating city code.

The Carmel City Council voted at its June 18 meeting to make several changes to its ordinance regarding door-to-door solicitors in response to updates in federal law that prevent municipalities from treating vendors from commercial entities and nonprofit organizations differently.

The changes, approved 6-0, state that all door-to-door vendors seeking to make a sale must first obtain a license and pay $20 for a criminal background check. This includes Girl Scouts selling cookies or anyone else selling items to benefit a nonprofit, a category previously exempted.

City councilor Jeff Worrell said June 21 he felt the council had little choice but to vote to comply with federal law, as other communities have faced class action lawsuits. He said the changes aren’t targeting Girl Scouts, the nonprofit group that appears to be most affected.

“If you are selling a commercial product, it Worrell doesn’t matter who you are, and that’s unfortunate,” he said.

Carmel-based Girl Scout Troop 378 leader Beth Richardson is concerned about how the changes will affect her group. She said the girls only make 60 or 70 cents per box of cookies sold and that each Scout would need to sell approximately 30 boxes

just to cover the criminal history check fee.

The cookie sales raise funds for Scouts to participate in STEM activities and go on camping trips, among other activities.

“We’d hate to have a (deterrent) be that they have to pay for this ability to go door-to-door,” she said. “There’s concern for how it’s going to impact the troop finances and what we can do with these girls as we try to work through the troop year.”

City officials pointed out at both June council meetings that Girl Scouts appear to be decreasing their door-to-door sales in favor of public booths and other selling methods. But that’s not the case for Troop 378, Richardson said.

“At least in my neighborhood, the day (the cookies) go on sale you see Girl Scouts out all over,” she said.

Deana Potterf, Girl Scouts of Central Indiana chief communications officer, stated in an email that Scouts are embracing technology that wasn’t previously available.

“Digital Cookie provides an opportunity for girls to set up their own webpage to sell cookies,” Potterf said. “Girls now can take credit card payments at cookie booths.”

She declined to elaborate on the official stance of the Girl Scouts organization regarding door-to-door cookie sales.

Potterf Worrell said the city could have scrapped its solicitor ordinance altogether to comply with federal law but decided against it.

“We certainly talked about that, but that means anyone could come to Carmel and knock on your door at 11 p.m. or 2 a.m.,” he said. “It could become the wild, wild west.”

NO-KNOCK LIST A NO GO The No-Knock List is a no go in Carmel.

The Carmel City Council approved several changes to its ordinance regarding door-to-door vendors at its June 18 meeting, but creating a NoKnock List was not one of them.

At its June 4 meeting, the council had discussed creating a No-Knock List, which would have been similar to the Do Not Call Registry.

Those interested in joining the list would have signed up for free with the Carmel Police Dept. and received a no-knock sticker to display on their door or a no soliciting sign to place near their walkway. Solicitors would be required to check addresses against the list before going door-to-door and would pay a fine of $400 for each violation.

But at the June 13 Finance, Utilities and Rules Committee meeting, councilors decided the issue needed more research. Council and committee member Ron Carter said they discovered several “logistics problems” as they considered the NoKnock List, such as vendors using it to target households through direct mail.

“It’s not an idea that’s well thought out enough to include in an ordinance,” he said, adding that the council may reconsider it at a later date.

CRC acquires Mohawk Landing

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Mohawk Landing shopping center is one step closer to redevelopment, although City of Carmel officials say CITY NEWS they are not in a hurry to make major changes to the 35-year-old building on two acres on Range Line Road directly east of Carmel City Center.

The Carmel City Council voted 6-0 at its June 18 meeting to transfer the property from the city to the Carmel Redevelopment Commission. The city purchased the site for $2.8 million in 2017, in part to make way for a new roundabout at Range Line Road and City Center Drive.

Carmel Mayor Jim Briainard said at the time that many Carmel City Center visitors had been using the Mohawk Landing parking lot and that the site needed to be reconfigured. He said a multi-story, mixed-use development would likely be a good fit.

CRC Executive Director Henry Mestetsky told the council June 18 that Mohawk Landing is “certainly in the path to be redeveloped” in the future as the city reconstructs Range Line Road. He said the CRC will put

out requests for proposals and look for a private developer to “bring something great” to the site.

Several businesses are still operating in Mohawk Landing, including a Pizza Hut, Thai Castle, Kim’s Alterations and a National Guard recruiting center. Mestetsky said the city will work with the tenants to help them stay open and remain local in the long term and that current leases will continue to be renewed in the short term.

“It’s imperative the city do our best to make sure local businesses are given every chance to thrive,” he said June 20. “We are focused on encouraging development that will support our local businesses in the long run and will assist as much as we can.”

Firefighters build custom tables

The firefighters at Carmel Fire Dept. Station 41 created two custom-made, 3 1/2-foot by 10-foot tables from recycled materials.

“The kitchen table is the heart and soul of a firehouse, just like it’s the heart and soul of your home,” CFD spokesman Tim Griffin said. “This is where veterans teach new guys, sitting right here at this table.”

The tables seat eight. Old bowling lane floor boards were used for the tabletops and broken fire hydrants were used as legs.

CFD engineer Greg Webb created the center decals through his company Webb Effects.

“Turns out the food tastes the same on them,” Griffin said. “We’re fortunate because there’s so many great cooks in the firehouse.”

Video of the tables reached more than 80,000 people on Facebook.

The department received more than 200 donated coins to use as a border. The coins include military, challenge and line-of-duty death coins that help memorialize fallen firefighters.

Eclipse festival proposed for 2024

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com In August 2017, people living in portions of the United States were able to see a total solar eclipse, leading ASTRONOMY some to drive hundreds of miles to find the perfect location to see it.

Although cloudy skies hampered the event for some, the longest ground duration of totality was 2 minutes, 41.6 seconds just south of Carbondale, Ill. Sexson In Indiana, only a partial eclipse was visible.

But on April 8, 2024, a total eclipse will move through Indiana, including Carmel. In some parts of the world, the totality will last 4 1/2 minutes. In Indiana, the eclipse will begin around 1:50 p.m., with totality for about three minutes and 46 seconds, starting around 3:09 p.m.

It will be central Indiana’s first total solar eclipse in 819 years. The path of the eclipse will cut through the U.S. from Texas to Maine with the Indianapolis area being near the center.

After 2024, the next eclipse visible in central Indiana will be in 2093, but that will be a ring-shaped annular eclipse, which is not total.

the Carmel City Council that Carmel should begin planning now for the historic event by hosting an eclipse festival that day.

“I believe this will be an event that virtually every Carmel resident will be greatly interested in,” he said. “I believe the city can take the lead in educating people on what they will see as well as the very important subject of eye safety.”

Sexson said Carmel could attract top academics and perhaps partner with Butler University, which has the Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium and is the alma mater of Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. He said the soon-to-be constructed luxury hotel outside of The Palladium would be perfect for hosting the event.

“Of course, nothing will be as good as clear skies in Carmel on eclipse day, but I believe it will be worth the effort to put on such an event knowing we may not get the weather we want,” Sexson said. “After the total eclipse in 2024, I doubt Carmel will see another one for maybe a thousand years.”

OBITUARIES William J. “Bill” Spencer, 77, of Carmel died June 16. He was born June 23, 1940, to William Elmer and Mildred (Burgin) Spencer.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State University. Bill was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and was an avid sports fan, especially of Indiana University.

Bill is survived by his wife, Bonnie H. (Hutchins) Spencer; children, Tammie S. Spencer and William E. “Bill” Spencer (Sarah); grandchildren, Alyssa, Charles, Nicholas,

Drew, Jackson and Maryn; and his siblings, Judy Genrich, Linda Guyer, Robert Spencer and Patti Schlom.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Rebecca Streeter.

Robert G. Auscherman, 81, of Carmel, passed away. Born on Jan. 20, 1937, in Indianapolis, he attended both Ben Davis and Shortridge high schools. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in England. Upon returning to the U.S he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic control specialist in the Indianapolis Regional ATC Center for more than 30 years.

Bob is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Suzanne Wallace Auscherman, daughter, Wendy Auscherman Reed, son, Andy Auscherman (Natalie) and four grandchildren, Amy, Allie and Drew Auscherman and Cooper Reed. He his also survived by sisters Jene and Janice and brother, Ron. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Greg Auscherman, his sister, Joyce Allen and brother, Bill.

UHS falls short of title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Even if his University High School baseball players couldn’t see it, coach Chris Estep found the bright spot.

BASEBALL “Our seasons always seemed to end in the sectionals, and we’re finishing in the state finals,” Estep said. “Where we were, where we’ve come from, it’s monumental. I don’t think they understand it right now, but I think they will in a couple of days.”

Daleville edged University 4-2 in the Class A state championship game June 16 at Victory Field in Indianapolis. Daleville (22-9) scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win its second title in three seasons.

Estep said his team (28-7) had its chances, stranding 11 runners, as it was attempting to win the Carmel private school’s first state title in any sport.

“It was a great run,” Estep said. “What else could you ask for? It was a great game.”

Estep said it was a huge step for the program, saying the seven freshmen, including three starters, benefited from the extra work.

to be better than this team is right now,” said Estep, adding that coming so close should make the team hungry to return.

University center fielder Ryan Williams said the team had more than just talent.

“The difference in this team from past teams is our mental game was better than our physical game,” Williams said.

Williams was named the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Mental Attitude Award winner for Class A baseball.

Estep said Williams’ honor was phenomenal.

“If any kid deserves it, he does,” Estep said. “He came to us with just a little experience as a freshman. He has fantastic skills.

He is going to be a really good college baseball player (at Morehead College).”

New CarmelFest chairman thankful for veteran support team

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com James Bednarski understands the challenges of being CarmelFest chairman, but he knows he is not facCOVER STORY ing it alone.

“There’s a lot of moving parts. As someone who has not done this before, you have to understand where there might be stumbling blocks and what might step up and bite you,” Bednarski said.

“Former Chairman Gary Sexton has been great to lean on. (Ex-chairman) Jeff Worrell has been very supportive. The mayor and his administration have been very supportive as well. I’ve got a great team.”

Bednarski started his three-year commitment as CarmelFest chairman after last year’s event. The annual festival is July 3-4.

“I’m a little bit behind-the-scenes, too, because it’s all about leading a team,” Bednarski said. “We’ve got 50 people-strong on the committee. It’s nice to be able to help give them direction and help get road blocks out of the way and make sure we have a solid and strategic vision for the entire festival.

I have more responsibility, for sure. It’s not about me.”

Bednarski said his hobby is serving the community.

“That’s what I enjoy,” he said. “It’s been a wonderful experience and the opportunity for a lot of personal growth.”

Bednarski has already had a taste of those long hours.

“It’s a lot of hard work on the third and fourth (of July),” he said. “We’re there early and stay very late.”

It’s a more than 11-month commitment each year.

“We take from July 6 until August off,” Bednarski said.

Bednarski said he served as a protege to Sexton at last year’s CarmelFest. Sexton replaced Jeff Worrell, who was chairman from 2012 through 2014.

“James is well-trained and well-suited to take over the reigns and lead CarmelFest for 2018,” Worrell said.

Worrell said Sexton and Gary Frey also worked facilities before becoming chairman.

I am most excited about his penchant for innovation. He is putting his mark on CarmelFest, and I think our guests will appreciate the changes he is making.”

Carmel High School senior in the fall, is a member of the CarmelFest board and is running the new ExtremeZone, designed for teens and adults.

“It’s a big responsibility for a 17-year-old,” James Bednarski said. “The success of the Christkindlmarkt encouraged us to do something on Center Green as part of the expansion for CarmelFest.”

Instead of tickets, wristbands for unlimited rides in the KidsZone and ExtremeZone are being sold.

Another change is rebranding the event.

“We have a brand new logo,” Bednarski said. “That’s involved everything from creating new posters to new signs.”

Bednarski joined Carmel Rotary, the presenting group for CarmelFest, approximately five years ago.

“I got involved behind-the-scenes in CarmelFest, and my responsibilities have increased each year,” he said.

Bednarski went from overseeing the parking for two years to overseeing the facilities last year.

“We’re thrilled to have that brand new Veterans Way garage, that’s huge,” Bednarski said of the 700-space garage.

Personal: Turned 50 in March. Grew up in Lancaster, Pa. Moved to Indiana in 1989; lived in Fishers for several years before moving to Carmel in 2006. His wife, Julie, is a professor at the University of Indianapolis and an occupational therapist. She assists at CarmelFest. Bednarski works in sales for DiverseNet, a low-voltage technology company. Bednarski and his wife graduated from Boston University. Volunteers with son, Connor, at Merciful Help, a food pantry.

Connor participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student of the Year campaign.

The best thing about serving with CarmelFest: “Helping other people get involved in serving the community is huge. Developing other people who are able to serve has been meaningful to me.”

His main purpose: “It’s all focused on everyone having a good time and staying safe.”

Favorite places to go in Carmel: “We enjoy Matt the Miller’s and the parks.

We like short hikes. We love to go to the Indiana Wind Symphony. The Carmel Symphony is great with its new director.”

Presenting to a large assembly of mostly central Indiana business leaders, the young mayor of the recently ordained City of Fishers, Scott Fadness, outlined a vision for his community and that of the larger body of central Indiana. While at once relaxed, even jocular, he is intensely focused on navigating the threats and opportunities with which he is confronted. One is comforted to expect that even if the challenges prove overwhelming, it would not be for any lack of effort, intelligence or intensity on his part.

In examining the population growth, rising real estate values and other affirmations of the positive direction his citizenry enjoys, he admonished the group with his own mantra — namely to invest oneself in “knowing the difference between what you are doing and what’s happening to you.”

Too often, we revel in the success we might encounter in life, claiming that “we own” all that is good and right. We are making it happen. We are “doing” it. Still, as life turns against us and the winds blow blustering cold in our face, we assert all matter of calamity to be “happening” to us.

Surely, sometimes we are correct. Yet, how often did we take credit for a rising tide and refuse blame for a sinking ship?

In our own work, home and family, are we holding ourselves to account for what we can hope to affect and deflecting credit (or blame) for that which we cannot? Is the magic in life not whether we own our actions or not but instead knowing when and how to hold ourselves accountable and when to claim a pass? Fadness reminds us to check not only our hubris but also our humility.

We survived! Twenty-three people, seven nights, one beach house. Compared to previous family vacations, this week ranks pretty high. Here’s why.

HUMOR For starters, the “littles” are getting older. Three of my nieces were drowning victims waiting to happen last year, but this summer they can all sort of swim. And more importantly, they can truly be threatened with, gulp, “No iPad time!”

True, my youngest sister still has two kiddos in diapers, and they cried a lot. I mean a lot. But their antics were more than offset by copious amounts of alcohol.

Wine, beer, rum, vodka, tequila, even a fifth of Jack, were consumed in vast quantities, making the boxes of SPF 70 we went through look like we were wintering in Siberia. And that’s saying something, as most of us are pasty gingers.

There were no severe sunburns, only one fight (the result of an impromptu Dr. Phil session where one of my nieces told her sister she didn’t like her new haircut), and with the exception of another niece projectile vomiting in a rental car on the way to the airport, no illnesses. We enjoyed sandcastle-building, Boogie-Boarding, storm-watching, dominoes, Jeopardy, eating, reading, fishing, original performance, and actual, live, face-to-face conversation.

At the last night’s dinner, we played HighLow, where everyone shares the best and worst parts of the trip. My dad, who had experienced limited beach time because of a twisted ankle, said it best: “I just like being here with all of you.” Me, too.

READERS’ VIEWS All students need the best Editor, I have been reading your columns about whether to put high-ability and general students together.

My knowledge is very elementary of the reasons for and against doing away with the high-ability classes. All I have to relate is a personal experience.

In the third grade, I made Cs in my math class. But one day our teacher gave us a difficult problem to take home and

solve. I came alive! I was the only one to solve it. I had been bored but now became interested, and the teacher gave me special problems to solve.

Later, I made all As and did excellent in algebra, trig, geometry and all other courses. I was a grad with honors in college.

My point: Some very good students might well be excluded by a segregated system. All students need the best.

Do your part to save the vaquitas Editor, My name is Keira, and I am a fifthgrader that fell in love with this amazing animal, the vaquita. There are only 20 to 30 left in the wild today, living only in the northern end of the Gulf of California.

I am wanting to do everything I can to help save these animals while living in Carmel.

Vaquitas are dying because of gill nets.

Gill nets are meant for catching fish, but some of the fishermen have brought up their nets with the vaquitas caught in the nets. Mexico made it illegal to use gill nets in the area where vaquitas live. Still, vaquitas are still getting caught in gill

nets by illegal fishermen.

With your help, by spreading the word about the declining numbers of vaquitas and by buying sustainable seafood, there still is hope. You can also help by donating to VaquitaCPR.org or aza.org/ SAFE-Vaquita.

I hope that you will support this cause and spread the word. My challenge to you is to tell five of your friends about the vaquita and the danger of them leaving our planet forever and give them the same challenge.

If we do this, we might start a movement in Carmel that could help save the future of our friends on the West Coast.

As an apology to a friend, I sent him a $30 gift card for a breakfast.

We ate together the next HUMOR week. After we finished, the waiter informed us there was still credit remaining.

“You use it,” Jim said before he left.

“How much credit is left?” I asked the waiter.

“The balance is $971.12. That’s a record here. Second place is $13.78.”

“Wait,” I said, “that’s not right. The card was only for $30.”

The manager came over and confirmed I could use the card’s balance.

“Our mistake,” he said, “and we will honor it.”

I told Mary Ellen, and she demanded that I return the card. I wanted other opinions.

First, I emailed my brother in New York.

“Peter, I bought a $30 gift card but they credited me $1,000 by mistake. What should I do?”

Peter’s response: “About what?”

Then I emailed my editor, Heidi.

“Can you help with a situation. I have a $1,000 gift-card from a local breakfast joint, but I only paid for a $30 card.”

Her response: “First, you need a question mark after ‘situation.’ Second, gift card is not hyphenated. Enjoy your free breakfasts.”

Finally, I called my friend, Bob. “Bob, I’m not hurting anyone if I use the card, am I?” “You’d be killing chickens.”

“I’m just eating the eggs.”

“They could have been chickens.”

Bob asked his wife what she would do.

“Cathy agrees with Mary Ellen, 100 percent.”

“Did you tell her what Mary Ellen said?”

“No, why would that matter?”

I did cut up the card. I was looking forward to a three-egg, four-cheese omelet every Sunday for two years, so I’ll be a little down about that — but so will my cholesterol.

Mary Ellen was happy. She said if the café caught their mistake, I’d have egg on my face for using the card. Which was my plan from the beginning.

Fitness runs in Taylor Dilk’s blood, and since the age of 16, she knew she would get into competitions.

Now 25, Taylor recently reFITNESS ceived her International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness pro card last summer. The end goal for an IFBB competitor is to compete in the Olympia, which Taylor calls the Super Bowl of bodybuilding.

Though she’s now a pro, she waited until after college to step onto the stage.

“My family growing up was always very healthy and they started competing when I was in high school, so that’s what sparked my interest in it, not only watching them transform physically but mentally,” said Taylor, who grew up in Colorado. “When I was 16 years old, I saw them get on stage and that day, I was like, ‘One day I’m going to do this’.”

Her family moved to Carmel her senior year of high school, and that’s where she met her husband, Steve. Both are 2015 Carmel High School graduates. Taylor’s father helped introduce the couple to the world of bodybuilding.

“Mainly, my dad really got us into the whole lifestyle, for me sooner than Steve because he used to bodybuild and we moved several times in high school because of business things. (Lifting) was my outlet for moving and coping with that,” Taylor said. “I took training and nutrition pretty seriously and knew I would always do something in the field one day.”

After graduating from Purdue University, Taylor and Steve spent a year living with Taylor’s parents so the pair could build their online business. Taylor and Steve offer coaching platforms. Although they aren’t training for a specific show right now, the Dilks launched a clothing platform, called Balance Athletica, this month.

Prior to exploring the fitness industry, Steve was in medical school.

“When I went into medicine, it was to help people,” he said. “I was coaching online fitness the summer between my first and second year and throughout my second year. I feel like I’m more involved with the people I’m working with (through coaching) and actually making a change in their lives.

It’s more of a preventative approach, and I like that. It feels much more rewarding than what I would get from practicing medicine, and I feel I’m actually involved in this per-

son’s life and I’m making a difference.”

The Dilks recently moved from Carmel to Colorado. They travel often because of their sponsors and to attend fitness expos around the world.

Taylor’s pro debut will be in 2019 and Steve will try for his pro card next summer.

“Both Steve and I are kind of looking toward 2019 for our next show, but right now we are making our offseason intentional,” Taylor said. “We are still tracking food and trying to make as many improvements as possible right now.”

Many of the Dilks’ clients are people looking to gain a healthier lifestyle, but Taylor said if someone wants to get into competing they should do so for the right reasons.

“I see a lot of people wanting to do a show coming from a place where they hate their physique, but they need to come from a place with love and loving themselves and their bodies for what it is and where they’re at at that time,” Taylor said.

Carmel recently welcomed Saltus Gyros at 820 East 116th St. Specializing in Greek and Mediterranean food, RESTAURANT the eatery features menu items such as gyros (Greek flatbread sandwiches with meat and vegetables), falafel (fried dough made from chickpeas or fava beans) and meat kabobs.

According to owner and operator Rami Abu-Rumman, who also operates Sam’s Gyros in Fishers, Saltus Gyros has a laid-back atmosphere with indoor and patio seating.

Takeout also is available. There is plenty of homemade food to choose from, including Abu-Rumman’s favorite, lamb.

“This is the only store around here that sells lamb. All the others only sell beef,” Abu-Rumman said. “In the last two years, we decided to do a lamb shawarma. It’s very, very good.”

Shawarma is a dish in which meat is cooked on a vertical spit and shaved onto sandwiches with vegetables and sauce or over rice. Though many of the menu items focus on meat, there are vegetarian options as well, such as falafel and vegetable dol-

mathes (grape leaves stuffed with rice, vegetables and spices). Appetizers range from the familiar (hummus) to more classical Mediterranean fare, such as saganaki (fried Kasseri cheese) and baba ghanouj (baked eggplant with lemon juice and garlic).

For those who aren’t quite ready to sample Greek and Mediterranean dishes, Saltus Gyros still has something to offer. The menu features a Philly steak sandwich and hamburgers, so guests can dip into their comfort zone before diving into something new.

Saltus Gyros is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Gentry channels Judy Garland again in Magic Thread Cabaret performances

“Judy, in my mind, was the MUSIC best entertainer to ever live,” Gentry said.

Gentry will perform Garland’s songs during Magic Thread Cabaret’s production of “Katy Gentry is Judy Garland LIVE!” The performances are set for 7:30 p.m. July 6 and 7 and 4 p.m. July 8 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

Gentry said the best thing about the 2017 show “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre of Indiana was hearing how others remember Garland in the receiving line after the performances. The Fishers resident was one of three actresses to portray Garland at various stages of her life, sharing a most impressive actress in a lead role/professional theatre division in the 2017 Mitty Awards with Annie Yokum, who played Garland in her middle years and an actress from another show, Karaline Feller. Gentry played Garland at age 38 during her famous 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall.

Gentry had previously played Garland in her 20s in the 2007 ATI production.

“The best things that I remember hearing were, ‘Thank you for bringing Judy back to me. I remember seeing her on her show,’ or, ‘I remember seeing her live,’” Gentry said. “People had tears in their eyes telling me this. There is definitely a connection there between her and her audience.”

Magic Thread Cabaret founders Tom Alvarez and Dustin Klein approached her about starting the cabaret-style theater.

The Magic Thread Cabaret debuted in November 2017.

“They would love to feature you as Judy,” Gentry said. “Over the last few months I think it’s become its own entity.

Of course, it’s a dream for me to feature Judy again.”

She will be accompanied by music director and pianist-composer Klein, bassist Christian Starnes and drummer Greg Wolff.

“It captures her entire life in one song in my opinion,” Gentry said. “That no matter what happens we’re going to get through this and sort of press on. We’ll end the first act of the show with that. A lot of the songs are taken from the Carnegie Hall show.”

Klein said he wants to accompany the show from the start.

“I was so honored that Katy asked me to music direct, and I actually sing a duet with her as well. I have also always loved this style of music. It’s my thing, for sure,” Klein said. “We thought Katy would be a good fit for our cabaret because we

had seen her in “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre in Carmel, and we were blown away by her talent. Our mission is also to spotlight and give a stage to central Indiana singers and performers.”

Gentry said audience members are enjoying the small, intimate setting The Cat offers.

Gentry, who is known by her married name McCord as a teacher, is starting a new position with the early child program in special education at Hamilton Southeastern Schools for the 2018-19 school year. She previously was in special education in Noblesville Schools. Her husband, Greg McCord, teaches at Hamilton Southeastern Junior High.

Photos earn Artisan designation

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com Ken Rabbers has always enjoyed hiking, camping and being outdoors. When photography became ACHIEVEMENT an interest, it’s no surprise that nature and landscapes became his focal points.

“I have always had an admiration for our natural world and quickly found myself wanting to explore it in greater detail to try to capture the beauty and uniqueness that it offers,” said Rabbers, who is something more than a talented amateur.

He is an Indiana Artisan.

A Carmel resident, Rabbers received the designation June 7 after his art photography was judged to be among the best in the state. The Indiana Artisan program was created 10 years ago by former Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman to promote fine and handcrafted art and food products created by Hoosiers.

Rabbers, who took up photography in the early 1970s, is one of nearly 20 Hamilton County visual and food artists who have received the Indiana Artisan designation.

Applicants are juried by a panel of business development, retail, arts and culinary professionals.

“My first reaction was surprised and feeling honored,” said Rabbers, 66. “It means

a lot more than I can express. Being juried in and accepted by other artisans and professionals, and not just those in my field, means that I have connected with others and been able to show them that I have developed my craft to a point that I am more than just a photographer.”

A retired civil engineer, Rabbers spends time working in the Indiana Artisan Store in Carmel and the Art IN Hand Gallery in Zionsville. He also volunteers once a week at IU North Hospital in Carmel.

Two Noblesville teens in CarmelFest Has Talent

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Grace Renee Eckelbarger is hoping the fourth time will be the charm in the CarmelFest Has Talent TALENT SHOW competition.

This will be the Noblesville resident’s fourth consecutive year participating in CarmelFest.

She finished third the first two years and was a semifinalist in 2017.

“This year, I’m hoping to knock those judges socks off,” said Eckelbarger, who will compete in the 16-andEckelbarger older division.

The age groups have been divided into two instead of three this year with a new category for instrumentals and ensembles.

The competition is set for July 3 and 4.

Eckelbarger, one of five semifinalists in her division, plans to sing “Songs Like This”

by Carrie Underwood.

“It’s a super-fun, upbeat song I think everyone will enjoy,” Eckelbarger said. “I like CarmelFest because it gives me the opportunity

to share my voice with others. CarmelFest has definitely helped me feel more comfortable on stage and in a competitive setting.”

Eckelbarger graduated from Horizon Christian School in 2015 in Indianapolis. She has been pursuing music by taking classes from an online music program. She also has been working at Carmel Middle School as a child care worker in its Edu-Care program.

Samantha Voegele, a Noblesville resident who graduated from Lapel High School in 2017, also will compete in the 16-andolder division.

Voegele “I entered this competition (previously) and had a blast,” Voegele said. “I was inspired to audition again and perform because I love the atmosphere at CarmelFest. I enjoy performing on stage and entertaining the crowd. I will be performing ‘Unchained Melody’ as covered by LeeAnn Rimes.”

Voegele, who will be a Purdue University sophomore this fall, is majoring in Animal Sciences.

Artist honors fallen deputy

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com Ellen Rusk didn’t personally know Jacob Pickett. But when she saw a photo of the slain Boone County deputy with his K-9 partner, Brik, she felt like PAINTING she lost a dear friend.

“I never met Deputy Pickett, but when I saw his picture I knew what a sweetheart he was, and he adored Brik,” said Rusk, a Zionsville resident who was profoundly saddened by Pickett’s March 2 shooting death while in the line of duty.

Moved to help in some way, Rusk reached out to local law enforcement and the Pickett family the best way she could — through her art.

Within a week of his death, Rusk — an amateur painter — began work on a portrait of Pickett with his partner, Brik.

Rusk finished the painting in about six weeks. She gifted copies to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and Whitestown Police Dept. and gave the original to Pickett’s widow, Jennifer Pickett.

Boone County Sheriff’s Office were delighted to receive the unsolicited, unexpected gifts.

“The painting was a beautiful gesture,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown. “You could tell there was a lot of emotion behind creating it, and that Ellen had a true appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice that Deputy Pickett made.”

It’s only been two years since 9-yearold Sadie Cohen performed in her first production. It was the THEATER summer of 2016. At the tender age of 7, Cohen played Mary’s Little Lamb in “The Trial of Goldilocks” at Jr. Civic Theatre.

And it was just the beginning.

“This past year has been an exciting year for me,” Cohen said. “I was in the Children’s Chorus of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre. I then went straight on to be one of the King’s Royal Princesses in ‘The King and I’ at Brebeuf Jesuit (Preparatory School). I was also in the advanced class at Jr. Civic for the ‘Variety Hour Show’ this past spring and we just performed ‘Emoji: The Musical.’ I was so excited to sing the Matilda solo in the ‘Revolting Children’ scene.”

Now, she is on stage in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “Annie” as one of the orphans, Ruby. The musical runs through July 15.

“I wanted to be in ‘Annie’ because I like trying new experiences and I thought that it would be fun, and I love the show and the movie,” said Cohen, who was selected as a 15-and-under semifinalist for the July 3-4 CarmelFest Has Talent.

Why does this soon-to-be fourth-grader at West Clay Elementary School spend so much time in theaters?

“I like performing because I love to sing, act and dance and entertain people,” Cohen said. “It makes me happy and I know it makes other people happy, too.”

That’s not to say there aren’t a few challenges along the way – like dancing.

“I’ve had to work hard at the dancing, but it’s been worth it,” she said, adding her favorite part of the show is the song “Hard Knock Life.”

Her performing career also has included three years with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. But when she’s not on stage, she enjoys arts and crafts, gymnastics, playing piano, swimming and playing with her pets.

“I also love going to museums and doing fun things with my family, like seeing shows or traveling,” Cohen said.

Palatine Hill and its palace Commentary by Don Knebel Most visitors to Rome get to the Colosseum and the Forum, but many overlook nearby Palatine TRAVEL Hill, which not only provides an extraordinary view of both but includes the colorful home of Caesar Augustus.

Life in the past lane Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I’m nostalgic for the past. I collect vinyl records and listen to them on my vintage turntable. I live in a house that was built in 1890. I write a newspaGRAMMAR GUY per column, which is something at this point I’ll have to explain to my grandkids from our colony on Mars. I’m a 30-something with the soul of an octogenarian. I have a hard time admitting the past has passed.

The words “past” and “passed” are easier to get mixed up than a set of identical twins on school picture day.

Past can be an adjective, noun, adverb and a preposition.

Its meaning almost always refers to something that happened before the present time. For example: In the past, MTV played actual music videos. Over the past 12 months, an entire year has gone by. The time is a quarter past four. These uses of past all point to a time that happened prior to the present.

Passed is a verb that is the past participle of the word “pass.” It means to move ahead or proceed. For example: In his career, Peyton Manning passed for 539 touchdowns, an NFL record. Congress passed no legislation last week. You

get the idea.

Here’s where things get confusing. You could correctly write, “I somehow passed the elephant without seeing him.” You could also correctly write, “I somehow walked past the elephant without seeing him.” The only difference in these two sentences is the word “walked.” As a rule of thumb, use “past” whenever your sentence already includes an active verb like “walked.”

Sometimes “passed” trips us up when it’s not used as an active verb. The local taco restaurant has finally passed its health inspection. Passed doesn’t always indicate literal movement.

Past almost always deals with time. Passed almost always deals with movement. The easiest way to remember this is that past is a shorter word than passed, and time is a shorter word than movement.

We are looking for part-time Body Safety Educators to deliver prevention programming for children in grades K-12.

Chaucie’s Place provides child abuse and youth suicide prevention programming to schools and youth serving organizations. The child abuse prevention program presented by Body Safety Educators is delivered in 45-minute to 1-hour sessions in a classroom setting. These presentations are scripted, however interaction with children is encouraged. Comprehensive training will be provided by Chaucie’s Place.

Duties: Present body safety curriculum to children and youth in schools, primarily in Hamilton, Boone and Marion counties, but including Hancock, Hendricks, Madison, and Tipton counties as well. Interact with teachers, school staff, and children in a professional, but caring manner. All presentations are scheduled within normal school hours, generally 8am-3pm during the school year.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field preferred; or a combination of experience, education, and/or training. Presenters will be paid $15/presentation.

Skills: Ability to work with and interact well with children, good presentation skills, effective communication skills with school representatives.
