Work underway on 146th St. interchange project

By Matthew Kent matthew@youarecurrent.com Work is underway on an interchange project at 146th Street and Allisonville Road near northeast Carmel that is ROADS expected to improve traffic flow through the area when it is finished in the summer of 2025.

The $44 million project will convert the intersection into a grade-separated interchange with 146th Street going over a roundabout on Allisonville Road. The project is intended to not only improve safety but to relieve congestion in the area, Hamilton County Highway Director Brad Davis said.

Davis said the county conducted traffic studies at various locations, including 146th Street and Allisonville Road, in 2017.

“This was one we reviewed, and based on traffic volume and projected traffic volume and what was happening over there at that location, it was recommended that an interchange of some type was the best solution,” Davis said.

Davis said a traditional roundabout most motorists are used to seeing in most places would not be able to handle future traffic growth through the corridor. He said a decision was made to create an interchange “and by doing that, you can greatly improve the level of service at that location over the next several decades” in an effort to alleviate traffic.”

“What we needed to do was, looking at congestion, particularly, it was going to get considerably worse,” Davis said. “And it was time to do something.”

That view was shared by Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt.

“146th Street is the main east-west artery in our county, running 17 miles from the Boone County line to I-69,” Heirbrandt said. “The Allisonville Road intersection in particular is one of the most traveled. Approximately 44,000 vehicles travel through it every day, so it’s critical we make these upgrades to keep up with the growing needs of our community.”

A portion of the funding was for congestion relief, according to Davis.

Davis said during the first phase, which is underway, motorists should be aware of restrictions traveling through the area and said that contractors are working to remove concrete medians. The first phase is anticipated to be completed around July 1, with contractors working on the outside portion where ramps will be, Davis said.

After the first phase, Davis said there will still be restrictions in place in which there will be no left turns permitted off 146th Street. After July, there will be two lanes east and west, in addition to right turn lanes on 146th Street.

On Allisonville Road, there will still be right and left turn lanes, in addition to thru-lanes, in both directions, Davis said. The only restriction is that there will be no left turn off 146th Street, he added.

However, Davis said the county is actively monitoring the area as the project continues.

“We know there’s backups and some delays that are occurring, but what we try to do and what we’re doing is frequently going out and trying to monitor the traffic, and our technician is constantly tweaking the traffic signal to kind of optimize the best we can the compromise that you get

between allowing traffic on 146th and Allisonville Road,” Davis said. “Predominantly, because of the volume during peak volumes of the day, 146th Street, you get more green time on that signal, and again, it’s a constant monitoring and tweaking of signals to make the best use out of it until we get through this phase.”

Davis said the signals will be adjusted based on traffic reconfigurations moving forward. However, he said motorists can anticipate the closure of Allisonville Road in early 2024 for about 90 days in the spring that will reopen in June.

“That will be the most impactful for people that will be occurring at that point in time,” Davis said.

Still, Davis asked drivers to be patient as they travel through the area and to seek alternative routes whenever they can. Motorists are restricted to 35 mph in the area, which is monitored by law enforcement.

“It’s inevitable and unavoidable that people have to use the corridor, but you know, it’s a question of being patient and understanding the short-term situation and that it’ll get better eventually,” Davis said. “We’re doing our best to keep traffic flowing the best we can through the project and trying to communicate to everybody on what’s going on.”

Benefit concert to aid fire victims

By Kiersten Riedford kiersten@youarecurrent.com Members of the AGES Band will perform a benefit concert from 7 to 9 p.m. July 1 at the gazebo near Carmel City GIVING BACK Hall to support victims of the April 17 fire at the Timber Creek condominiums.

The fire affected more than 30 units, according to Mark Stevens, a member of the AGES Band who lives near Timber Creek. No residents were injured in the fire.

Stevens said the fire damage is requiring the building to be torn down and rebuilt.

“There’s no estimate how long it’s going to take,” Stevens said. “But everyone seems to agree there’s no way it will happen in less than a year. So, people have to find housing for that period of time, and insurance is usually limited on what it’s going to cover.”

Some Timber Creek residents need more financial support than they initially received after the fire. So, Stevens and his bandmates decided to plan a concert to help.

“We’re a neighborhood where we have two and three homes connected with one another, so the threat of fire hits home,”

Stevens said. “It doesn’t happen very frequently, but it happens more frequently than perhaps people realize.”

The concert is free. Donations will be accepted at the event and online at gsnlive. kindful.com/?campaign=1081288. All proceeds will be managed through the Hamilton County Good Samaritan Network, a nonprofit providing relief to those affected by the fire.

Competitive eater sets Big Ugly record at Bub’s

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Competitive eater James Webb on May 25 destroyed the record for eating Big Ugly burgers at Bub’s by ACHIEVEMENT downing six of the giant sandwiches — 9 pounds in all — in 37 minutes and 14 seconds at the Carmel location. The previous record, held by Eli Lessig, was five Big Ugly burgers in 7 hours, set at the Bloomington restaurant in October 2022.

Webb, a former gym manager from Australia, ranks No. 10 in Major League Eating and was in Indiana to compete in the Jack’s Donuts World Donut Hole Eating Championship held May 26 in New Castle. He finished in fourth place, eating 295 donut holes in 8 minutes, 49 mini-pastries behind winner Geoff Esper. One week later, he set a world record by eating 59.5 donuts in 8 minutes at the Salvation Army National Donut Day World Eating Championship in San Diego, Calif.

Webb answered the following questions from Current about his visit to Carmel.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT BUB’S AND THE BIG UGLY CHALLENGE? Traveling from Australia is a long trip.

So, I like to spend a couple extra days and check out what’s around. I put up a post (on social media) saying, “Does anyone know of any good food challenges in Indiana?” And I got the Bub’s page tagged about 20 times.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE BIG UGLY BURGER? COULD YOU EVEN TASTE IT? You learn to taste on the go. You pretty much know from the second bite if it’s going to be a good challenge meal or a bad challenge meal or a very average challenge meal. The Bub’s burgers were actually delicious. I grossly underestimated how big they (were).

(Bub’s takes) a lot of pride in what they do. They weigh out all the ingredients. A lot of places, when you say you’re here for the challenge, slap it together and eyeball it and freehand it. (Bub’s) constructed these burgers so delicately. It was a delicious challenge.

WHAT WAS YOUR IMPRESSION OF CARMEL? It’s very pretty. The theme of Carmel is very different to what you would get in Sydney, Australia, where I’m from. Not only that, the people are so kind. Once I got to the restaurant (for the burger challenge),

everyone worked out what I was doing. Guys in the apartment block across the road were watching off their balcony and screaming encouragement. So, Carmel as a whole, I really enjoyed it. The weather was great, too.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER CHALLENGES COMING UP? I come to New York for the Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. That’s like the Super Bowl of competitive eating. I was the first Australian to ever qualify and compete last year. I ate 41 hot dogs in 10 minutes, and I finished third.

WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR THE HOT DOG CONTEST THIS YEAR? I want to eat 50. There’s only been eight people ever (to do it). Everyone’s improving.

I don’t care where I place, I just want to be that guy to eat 50 from Australia, you know what I mean?

The Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees on June 12 declared an emergency and approved up to $487,000 to fix a failing metal roof deck at Carmel High EDUCATION School.

A CHS maintenance technician recently discovered the problem when a “significant-sized” piece of the roof deck fell while the technician was in the boiler room, according to information included in the online school board agenda.

An inspection showed that the roof deck had rusted and broken free to expose the underside of the pink insulation board.

Anyone walking on the roof above the area would only be supported by 3 inches of rigid insulation and the roofing membrane.

“If somebody were on the roof, if they stepped in this area, they could literally fall through,” CCS Associate Supt. Roger McMichael said.

Because of the safety concerns — and expensive boiler equipment under it that could fail if exposed to water infiltration — the board declared the situation an emergen-

cy, which allows the district to approve a contract for the project without advertising for bids as long as it receives at least two quotes for the work.

CCS received quotes from three companies, ranging from $289,000 to $479,700. The board awarded the project to AAA Roofing, which submitted the lowest bid. The bid does not include decking and fireproofing, which are expected to add more than $160,000 to the project cost. The repairs will be funded through bonds for projects at CHS. McMichael expects work to begin soon.

McMichael said the failure is not believed to be related to a 2018 explosion in a boiler room at CHS. He said the exact cause of the failure has not been determined.

School board member Greg Brown asked CCS officials to provide additional information when available to the board on the failure, which he described as “shocking.”

“I just worry it’s not just this one area, that it could be in some other places, and we have a real calamity where people’s lives are at risk,” he said.

McMichael said professionals who have inspected the roof believe the failure is not widespread.

Students win econ competitions

By Edward Redd edward@youarecurrent.com Economic knowledge paved the way to victory for a group of Carmel High School students during naEDUCATION tional and international competitions.

On May 22, four students from CHS competed against three other teams from New York, New Hampshire and Georgia in the 2023 National Economics Challenge in New York. The Carmel team took the lead midway through the competition and won by a fourpoint margin. The team advanced to the international competition, where it won in a virtual match against China.

NEC is the only national economics competition in the U.S for high school students.

It challenges participants on micro and macroeconomic principles as well as their knowledge about the global economy.

CHS economics teacher and team coach Michelle Foutz said the team’s knowledge of economics was largely accrued by taking the school’s economics courses.

Team members took most of the same classes, such as AP History. General knowl-

edge allowed them to focus on one topic. As a team, they had diverse economic knowledge that allowed them to answer a variety of questions.

“It’s more advantageous for everyone to know different things,” team member Jordan Seigel said.

Out of 22 questions, they missed only three during the national competition. At the international competition, they got every question correct.

As national champions, each teammate won a personal cash prize as well as $5,000 for CHS.

The award is presented to a non-Rotarian who has demonstrated “service above self” (the Rotary Club’s motto) and made a lasting impact on the comKelly munity. The winner is recognized in the CarmelFest parade on July 4 and is honored on a plaque at Rotary Plaza on the Monon Greenway.

Kelly said he was shocked and speechless to learn he had been selected for the award.

“It has been such an honor and a privilege to work with Rotary and its committed members all these years. I was initially introduced to the Rotary Club by Ron Carter, a Rotarian and former Carmel City Council member, and then through CarmelFest, which Rotary has brought to the community for several years,” Kelly said. “Carmel wouldn’t be Carmel without Rotary. With all the wonderful things that happen in our community, I can guarantee you there are Rotarians involved.”

Rotary Club President Gary Sexton seeks nominations for the honor from the group’s 130 members, with the club’s executive committee making the final selection.

Algae at county park draws ire

By Matthew Kent matthew@youarecurrent.com A Carmel man is raising concerns over green algae at a Hamilton County park, but county officials dispute his allegations and say they have taken steps OUTDOORS to fix the problem.

Jeff Conrad, who teaches students fly fishing at Coxhall Gardens, said he has noticed algae almost year round.

Conrad placed blame on Hamilton County, saying the company that it uses “overtreats with fertilizer” that goes into the water.

“It’s gotten to the point where you can’t even fish there,” Conrad said.

Conrad said there are better ways to maintain a pond to prevent algae, adding that he understands the fertilizer keeps the grass looking green. However, it is the appearance of the lake that he is concerned about, he said.

Hamilton County parks spokesman Don Nicholls said the county has already taken steps to tackle the issue, including contacting its aquatics maintenance company to ensure that the problem is handled. Nicholls said one of the pumps in the water tied to Lancaster Duets.pdf

the overall aquatics maintenance of the pond was down but noted the county has reached out to the manufacturer.

That step, he said, would hopefully reduce the algae in the pond. Nicholls also said that a sudden increase in temperatures could also be a factor.

“That also leads to colonization of the algae more so than typical,” Nicholls said.

Nicholls also said that Conrad’s claims of runoff from fertilizer entering the pond that creates algae is incorrect. Nicholls said the county uses “very little fertilizer in our parks” and pointed out that the county has no control over what is used in nearby neighborhoods.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS Carmel High School home to both Hoosier students to earn 2023 national honor

By Edward Redd edward@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School has had a number of students selected as U.S. Presidential Scholars, a national designation awarded annually to two seniors in every state. This year, CHS had the rare distinction of being the home of both Hoosier honorees.

On May 10, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced the 59th class of scholars, which includes recent CHS graduates Archit Kalra and Amogha Paleru. They were selected from among 5,000 students nationally who qualified for the honor this year.

The U.S Presidential Scholars program was created in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating students.

The award is presented to one male and one female student in each state for academic success. Other students may be honored for achievements in the arts or career and technical fields (Bayan Yunis of Fort Wayne is a 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholar in Arts).

Kalra, 17, said he was shocked to learn he had been selected as a Presidential Scholar.

“I felt honored to be a part of that,” he said. “The notion that we’ve been recognized for some of the work we’ve done is very gratifying to hear.”

Kalra enjoys studying biology and has a special interest in outer space. One of his Presidential Scholar application essays focused on stardust, which he said sources all things. The concept helps him feel grounded and connected to everyone.

“There are some inherent qualities that we all share that are similar,” Kalra said.

“That’s just a further push towards recognizing we have much more in common than we have different.”

Kalra will attend Yale University to study neuroscience and economics. He plans to become a neurosurgeon.

“I want to make sure whatever I do leaves an impact on the community,” Kalra said.

Besides academics, Kalra said he enjoys playing chess and Scrabble with his little brother and spending time with family. He performs at cultural events with a dance group he formed with his friends.

Paleru, 18, said she had never heard of the Presidential Scholar program before learning she was a candidate for it. After

learning more about it, she decided to apply for the distinction.

She was taking an exam when the winners were announced and learned she had earned the honor when a friend congratulated her.

“I was like, ‘For what?’” Paleru said. “Then I went and looked at my email and I saw. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Wow.’” Outside of the classroom, Paleru enjoys the classical Indian dance, Bharatanatyam.

She has been dancing for 10 years with the Natyalaya School of Arts. She also likes to bake. Academically, Paleru enjoys studying human biology and public health.

As the daughter of a doctor, Paleru had an interest in medicine before high school.

Her interest led her to a Biomedical Pathways course, where she discovered a passion for public health. She wants to continue learning about how different aspects of

a person’s life affect their overall health.

“I thought that was something really incredible,” Paleru said. “(It is) something our current health care system overlooks.

I think those areas in conjunction with clinical medicine or research are going to be the most important factors in improving our health care system.”

Paleru will attend Stanford University, where she will study human biology and public policy. She plans to pursue a career in clinical medicine.

Dad thankful for extra time

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Bill Fultz was enjoying his one guilty pleasure at Cigar Haven in Fishers in May 2022 when the Carmel resident felt he was having a heart CARDIOVASCULAR attack.

“I was getting the pain in my shoulder, but what was unique about it was like I had a bad case of acid reflux and a brain freeze,” Fultz said.

“They say a heart attack is like an elephant sitting on your chest. In this case, there was more of a burning sensation.”

Fultz, who stopped drinking alcohol years ago because of migraines, arrived at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital in Indianapolis, where he learned he needed an acute aortic dissection to repair a tear in the aorta that many people don’t survive.

His daughter, Stephanie Fulks, 29, was so impressed with her father’s care at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital, she now works as an acute care cardiac nurse practitioner for a vascular surgery unit at Community.

time because everything went right for him to get care quickly.

He said it took two or three hours maximum from the time he was stricken to his heart surgery. He also benefited from being on blood pressure medication.

Fulks’ graduation celebration was held in August 2022. Since she got married amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with just 10 people in attendance, they celebrated her wedding at the same time, where she shared an extra special dance with her dad.

“He definitely has a different outlook on life that our family comes first because you don’t know what could happen,” Fulks said.

Celebrate with Carmel Pride Commentary by Sue Wolfgang While I’m humbled by the opportunity to write this column, I’m sad there’s still a need.

VIEWPOINT Pride Month is my favorite time of year — a chance to celebrate LGBTQ culture, uplift their voices and protect their rights. All because a persecuted community united in protest after the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, transforming that dark time into a commemoration of freedom and equality.

Carmel Pride is from 3 to 9 p.m. June 25 at Carter Green. This family-friendly event is run by a group of incredible high school students with more enthusiasm and drive than you will find anywhere. Their goal?

To give family and friends the chance to come together in a safe space of love and acceptance.

I am proud of our city’s record on social issues, particularly the passage of a comprehensive anti-discrimination ordinance in 2015 that includes protections for gender identity and sexual orientation. However, on every level of government and society, there is still work to do. To date this year, more

than 600 anti-LGBTQ laws have been introduced in this country, over two dozen in Indiana alone. Hate crime against the LGBTQ community, particularly transgender people, has been on the rise for years. We can and must do better.

If you are a straight woman or man, you might not think you have a dog in this fight.

But you absolutely do. There are LGBTQ people you love, even if you aren’t aware of their struggles. Statistically, more than 8,000 of our Carmel friends and neighbors are members of the LGBTQ community. We live in an inclusive city, so let’s celebrate everyone.

We live in a culture where great beauty is often wrongly associated with limited intelligence. It is probably the ESSAY envy of those less gifted with the privilege that accompanies matching the current ideal type of physical appearance that started the unwarranted perception. “You may be handsome, but I’m smart.” It only seems fair. A career is born in public — talent in privacy.” She managed the distinction between the personal and the projected. Some might rightly argue that she ultimately succumbed to an inability to fully reconcile the two. Beautiful? Certainly. Intelligent? Absolutely. Where are the gaps in our lives? If we have it all, can we still be missing something?

Longtime readers will recall a perilous journey I made with one of my daughters, then a 20-year-old microbiology major and hardcore K-pop fan who talked HUMOR stream of conscience for literally the entire 16-hour car ride.

Good times. Gooood times.

Recently, I had the chance to make a similar road trip with her twin brother, known not for his word vomit but instead for marathon video game sessions up in his room.

I had no idea what to expect, particularly because he is now a recent college graduate with no clue about his future. In anticipation of perhaps whole states traversed in awkward silence, I had several Yacht Rock playlists and four episodes of “Armchair Expert” ready to go.

To my surprise, we spent 13-plus hours in delightful conversation, covering everything from anime series I need to watch (“Attack on Titan”) to his favorite cousins (“Alex and Nick”) to whether red dye 40 was actually bad for you (no). We savored biscuits at Cracker Barrel, missed being part of a seven-car pile-up thanks to a McDonald’s snafu,

– DANIELLE WILSON failed to answer correctly more than five Trivial Pursuit questions on a card (because baseball is dumb) and contemplated the wisdom of C-Span in ranking James Buchanan as the worst U.S. president over Andrew Johnson. It was wonderful.

I never got to sing along to Steely Dan or Kenny Loggins, nor did I get to enjoy Dax Shepard hanging with a neuroscientist. But I was able to engage with a child in a way I haven’t been able to in many years, without his sibling for distraction or the new Zelda game as competition. Truly good times.

AI isn’t so smart — or is it?

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Recently, I experimented with an artificial intelligence app on my phone. I began with a few pressing questions HUMOR in my life, like how do I get rid of the racoon that is destroying our deck? And will the trash people take my old lawnmower? I had been told that AI could create a story if you simply prompt the app with an idea or question. Just for fun, here is what I requested: Write a funny essay on why Dick Wolfsie is not funny.

What you are about to read is exactly what I received back in less than 30 seconds: • Here are some reasons Dick Wolfsie is not funny: First, he has a weird name. Sounds like a cross between a detective and a werewolf. He has always had boring jobs. For 30 years he has been telling stories about quirky people he met, but all the stories were boring. His jokes fell flat and he never tackled anything serious. He never challenges himself, his viewers or his readers. He plays it safe and boring.

Everything is a cliché and totally predictable. He did bring his dog Barney on TV for many years. That’s what saved his career. Viewers watched Dick on TV because of the dog. His writing depends on horrible puns and weak punchlines. Where is the sarcasm and irony that good writing demands? In conclusion, Dick Wolfsie never makes people think. He just makes them yawn, turn off the TV or go to the next page of the newspaper.

Yes, that’s what artificial intelligence wrote about me. For this column, I edited out the parts that made me look bad. My first reaction was they must have confused me with a different Dick Wolfsie. You know, another guy who was on TV with his dog and writes a humor column.

I asked my wife, Mary Ellen, to read the essay.

“Here are some reasons Dick Wolfsie is not funny: First, he has a weird name. Sounds like a cross between a detective and a werewolf. He has always had boring jobs.”

– DICK WOLFSIE “Dick, this is outrageous. It’s full of inaccuracies. You didn’t bore people for 30 years on TV.” “Thank you, Mary Ellen.”

“Wasn’t it closer to 40? And they said you end every column with a dreadful pun.”

“But I don’t, do I?” “Of course not. You sprinkle dozens of them throughout the column. Along with the cliches.”

“But I do tackle serious topics.”

“Without question. Who could forget your important story about the guy who collects manhole covers? Your column about Miracle Whip versus mayonnaise? And my favorite: Why men who drink beer attract more mosquitoes?”

Now depressed, I had an idea. My original request set me up for witty insults. This time, I’d phrase it more positively: Write an essay on why Dick Wolfsie is comedy genius.

Civic Theatre’s YAP set to stage ‘Revue!’

Shepard will direct Civic MUSIC Theatre’s Young Artists Program’s “Revue!” in two performances at 6 and 8 p.m. June 26 at the Studio Theatre at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“We have just 10 rehearsals to put the show Painter together, so the performers have a lot to carry on their shoulders — learning songs and monologues, blocking, lyrics and then moving the show into the actual performance space,” Shepard said. “AnShepard other challenge, which I love, is making sure each artist’s voice is heard and each story is told authentically. All 13 of them answered a long list of questions for me, and I took their experiences about social media, dating, family, friendships, bullying and other topics and wrote a script, often using their words verbatim as monologues.”

Johnna Tavianini is the music director.

“Johnna and I both teach at Ball State (University), but we’ve only worked together once before, and that was on the last production of ‘Revue!,’” Shepard said. “We are all so lucky to have Johnna onboard. She really is a genius at making these young artists sound like stars while propelling their unique stories through music.”

The song, “Children Will Listen” from “Into the Woods,” is powerful for Shepard.

“The lyrics and Johnna’s arrangement work so well to further the stories many of them are telling,” Shepard said. “These performers are very brave, sharing personal experiences about racism, dating as a member of the transgender community and being bullied. I respect their honesty and openness more than I can say. The social media section is also an eye-opener

to me. These teenagers communicate and validate each other in ways that are so foreign to other generations.”

The cast has 13 singers and actors, all high school age.

“Some are entering high school and some are already driving, working and thinking about college and future plans as adults,” Shepard said. “Even though they may only be four or so years apart in age, individually, they’re at very different places, which is also fascinating. I love seeing the leaders emerge and some younger performers rising to the level of their more experienced peers.”

Wyatt Painter, a 2023 Park Tudor School graduate, looks forward to the number, “It Hurts Me.” “I chose this song for a previous audition at school, but I ended up not getting the role I auditioned for with that song,” Painter said. “I’m excited to take a song I worked on previously and turn it into something amazing with the help of the cast.”

Painter also is eager to perform “I’m Not Afraid of Anything.”

“The song is from a song cycle called ‘Songs for a New World,’ which I love,” Painter said. “I get to open the number with one of my friends and castmates, Caroline (Brundage). We went to school together this past year, it being my senior year and her freshman year. However, we originally met last summer because we were both a part of last year’s ‘Revue!’ We have become good friends, so it means a lot that we can have this moment on stage together before I go to college.”

Painter has struggled the most with memorizing lyrics.

“The only time I have before rehearsal is my 30-minute break at work, but I always try and use my free time to study lyrics whenever I can. I work at my school as a camp counselor and co-leader for various camps,” Painter said. “Working an 8 (a.m.) to 4 (p.m.) job where I’m constantly around screaming children alongside a four-hour rehearsal can be tiring, but I love both, even though I struggle with memorization sometimes.”

Cheesemaker offers nice variety Commentary by Mark LaFay Summertime around our house means time outside. If you like to get out and about while there are 15 hours of FOOD available sunlight, then you may also like cooking and or eating outside, as well!

We love heading to the park to cook out and fish, hanging at Symphony on the Prairie or doing other sorts of daytime outdoor excursions. Cheese, crackers and fresh fruit are no-brainers in the cooler. If my daughter Maggie, age 3, is in tow, then you better believe we have at least one whole watermelon just for her!

Recently, I was introduced to a cheesemaker based in Point Reyes, Calif., called Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. It is a family-owned operation that started out as a dairy farm in the 1960s but transitioned to making cheese in 2000. Its first cheese to market was its Original Blue, the first of its kind in the state. Its cheeses are rich, creamy and just all-around awesome. My favorite is the Quinta. Take a look at three fantastic Point Reyes cheeses that would be great for any outdoor activity you might

pursue: Original Blue — This blue cheese is super creamy, white in color with bits of blue all throughout it. The blue mold provides fruity and nutty flavor notes that are mind numbing.

Quinta — This is a soft cheese, comparable to brie. It has a soft rind with a smooth soft interior texture. You can eat this when it’s new, but the more it ages, the better.

This cheese is money when it is past 80 days. At this point, the cheese starts to take on the consistency of cheese dip. It is amazing!

Toma — The best comparison to this is provolone but not as mild. There is a delightful nutty characteristic to this cheese.

It is great to slice and eat with stone fruit or apples, or place-shred for pizza. It’s super versatile and great for munching on with some crispy white wine.

Visiting the Chena River near Fairbanks, Alaska Commentary by Don Knebel Today, in our continuing tour of Alaska, we travel along the Chena River near Fairbanks, learning about the TRAVEL Alaska Native culture and what developed from it.

Fairbanks is in central Alaska, about 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Most scholars believe the surrounding area was first populated approximately 12,000 years ago by Athabaskans, descendants of people who had crossed what was then a land bridge between Siberia and what is now Alaska. Athabaskans were the original people of the Alaskan Interior. They were semi-nomadic, hunting caribou and moose, trapping small animals and catching salmon in fish wheels. They established semi-permanent settlements, typically along a river,

The Project consists of, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: Construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the White River, including incidental items such as parking lot, concrete curb, pavement markings, signage, retaining walls, temporary and permanent erosion control measures, HMA/PCCP trails and sidewalks, bike racks, bollards, drainage culverts, conduit for future utilities, and lighting on the bridge structure.

In the early 1950s, Jim Binkley, whose father had established an Alaskan freight-hauling business, built a paddlewheel boat named Discovery in his backyard and started giving tours on the Chena River from a spot near Fairbanks. Today,

descendants of Binkley operate three boats on the Chena River. The newest, Discovery III, has a capacity of 900 people. Three-hour tours provide information about the area, including its original people and wildlife.

The boats stop at the Trail Breaker Kennel along the river, where the widower and daughter of the late Susan Butcher, who won the Iditarod race four times, demonstrate how their sled dogs are trained. The boat also stops for an extended visit at the Chena Village, a re-created Athabaskan village, complete with reindeer (domesticated caribou). Athabaskan guides talk about the lifestyle of their ancestors and demonstrate such things as how to prepare salmon caught in a fish wheel for the winter and how to survive when the temperature gets as low as 60 degrees below zero. Visitors can speak with the guides and observe dogs from Susan Butcher’s Trail Breaker Kennel.

Facebook COO Sheryl SandGRAMMAR GUY berg immortalized the phrase when she wrote a best-selling book entitled “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.” What does “lean in” actually mean?

It’s all about posture. If you’re slumped down in your chair at work, whiling away until the 5 p.m. whistle blows, you’re not leaning in. Surprisingly, AP style suggests that you don’t use italics in titles of magazines or newspapers; instead, simply capitalize them (e.g., Sports Illustrated). The AP dictates that books, films, TV shows, songs, albums, speeches, works of art, etc. don’t get italicized, either; instead,
