2 stores eyeing O’Malia site

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com At least two grocery stores are looking at moving into the site of the former O’Malia food market at 126th REDEVELOPMENT Street and Gray Road, according to Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard.

Brainard said at least one of the companies is from out of state but declined to name either one. He said the city has been providing demographic information to the two chains, and he hopes to have an answer on their intentions within the next 60 to 90 days.

The site has been vacant since July 2017, when Marsh – which operated the O’Malia store – went out of business. Since then, city leaders have been working to attract another grocery store to the area.

“A grocery store is really important for that area. That’s the only area on the east side of Keystone south of 146th Street that is zoned appropriately for a grocery store and has

enough space,” Brainard said. “The only other commercial zoning is Main Street and Hazel Dell, and that area isn’t large enough.”

Brainard said he didn’t know if the companies considering the site would develop a store about the size of O’Malia or something bigger, but he said that “it seems to be a trend in the grocery business today to have smaller stores.”

Brainard said the city could look at partnering with the private sector to redevelop the area, but he doesn’t expect that to happen anytime soon. It’s likely that a private developer will step in, he said. For now, the city is making sure grocery store chains that could be a good fit in the shopping center know that the site is available.

“I’m very determined we’re going to do everything we can to get a good grocery store,” said Brainard, who lives near the site.

A larger Marsh store that closed nearby at 116th Street and Keystone Parkway is not likely to redevelop as a grocery store, Brainard said, because it’s near the Kroger on Range Line Road.

DISPATCHES Home Place board — The City of Carmel is seeking nominations for a new, temporary advisory board required in the ordinance that outlines what must take place when Home Place joined the City of Carmel. The board will advise the city should excess money remain in a special property tax fund designated to be invested in the Home Place area.

The board will only serve until all of the property taxes impounded in the fund are spent. Interested persons should send a resume and cover letter to Sharon Kibbe at skibbe@carmel.in.gov by June 25.

CarmelFest fireworks — This year’s CarmelFest fireworks will commence at 9:45 p.m. on the Fourth of July and last approximately 25 minutes. They will be launched north of The Palladium and to the east of the Monon Trail. Synchronized music will be provided on CHS radio station WHJE 91.3 FM. Ivy Tech top fundraiser — The Ivy Tech Foundation has ranked as the top fundraiser among community college systems nationwide, according to a survey conducted by the Council for Aid to Education. This is the ninth consecutive year that Ivy Tech has topped the list.

For the first time in its 15-year history, Noblesville-based HAND Inc. is reaching outside of Hamilton County to create HOUSING affordable housing options for low-income residents.

HAND – Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development – is investing more than $2 million in Lebanon in Boone County to acquire 17 duplexes, which will be renovated and transformed into affordable apartments. The rental community will have 33 leasable units on two cul-de-sacs, along with an office for property manager Mark III and a community room open to all residents.

HAND, a nonprofit that addresses housing needs of low- and moderate-income people, families and senior citizens in Indianapolis suburbs, is branching into Boone County to serve a need, according to HAND’s Outreach and Fundraising Manager Andrea Muirragui Davis.

After 15 years of developing apartments from the ground up, and remodeling three abandoned buildings, HAND wanted to acquire an older property in need of investment in order to keep it affordable for residents.”

The Lebanon duplexes, called Hickory Commons, were built in the 1950s. The renovation project, with funding from the Indiana Housing Community Development Authority and a

private loan from Lake City Bank, is expected to take about a year and will not displace residents.

Because of its proximity to Hamilton County and the rising need for affordable housing options, Boone County was a natural place for HAND to extend its reach, Muirragui Davis said.

“Boone County also is experiencing the rapid population growth that drives housing costs up, so it has similar challenges (to Hamilton County),” Muirragui Davis said.

“Geography also is a factor, given the proximity to HAND’s existing operations in Hamilton County.”

HAND’s Boone County project likely won’t be its last outside of Hamilton County.

“HAND is always looking for opportunities to address the housing needs of low- and moderate-income individuals and families, whether it is in Hamilton County or elsewhere,” Muirragui Davis said. “Although Marion County has a wealth of organizations tackling this issue, HAND is one of very few nonprofits working on housing issues in the suburbs.”

Veteran’s Way between Civic Square and the CONSTRUCTION city hall parking lot was scheduled to close last week to make repairs to the Duke Energy transmission duct bank installed in December. The project is expected to take three weeks with the road reopening before CarmelFest.

Lane restrictions have begun near Keystone Parkway and 96th Street, where a new roundabout interchange will be built.

Construction is expected to last through 2019.

Range Line Road is restricted to one lane in both directions between Carmel and City Center drives for improvements. Construction is expected to be complete by July 4.

Construction on a new access ramp from Lowes Way to Keystone Parkway is under way. Phase one of the project is expected to be complete in October 2019.

116th Street is closed between Towne and Spring Mill roads for replacement of a bridge east of Clay Center Road and a culvert over Williams Creek just west of Ditch Road. The road is expected to reopen in August.

Phase 2 of the 146th Street construction project is under way between Ditch and Towne roads. A frontage road will be available to access homes and businesses.

Phase 2 is expected to be complete this summer.

West 96th Street was scheduled to close on or after June 11 for work on a storm water culvert west of Ditch Road. The closure is expected to last approximately two weeks with additional lane restrictions until September.

North Range Line Road from 136th Street to U.S. 31 is expected to close on or after June 15 for construction. The closure is planned until early 2019.

River Road will be closed on or after June 18 from Cherry Creek Boulevard to 146th Street for landscaping and trail work. The road is expected to reopen June 29.

An expansion of Cherry Creek Boulevard is anticipated to begin in July and be complete before the end of the year.

Carmel wins first boys state golf title since 1990

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Carmel High School boys golf coach Chard Reid, his team’s unselfishness made all the difference.

SPORTS “It’s a team full of talent, but more importantly, this team bought into the team mentality where we are not just playing for ourselves,” Reid said. “So many of the best players around the state are so used to playing for themselves week in and week out. This team hasn’t done that. They bought into a team that wanted to win a state title, and that’s been the biggest difference.”

Carmel finished second last year as Center Grove rallied for a record 18-hole total of 281 strokes on the final day. At Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club June 13, Carmel held on to win its first boys golf state finals title since 1990 and sixth overall to move into a first-place tie with Anderson for the most state titles. The top-ranked Trojans, who trailed by four strokes entering the second day, made another run. However, secondranked Carmel held on to win by a single stroke as Carmel finished with 601, one less than Center Grove.

“I told Nick before the last hole you had to tie Noah (Gillard) or lose by one,” Reid said.

Reid said if the two teams had tied it would have gone to the fifth-player tiebreaker score and Carmel would lose.

After Gillard birdied, Dentino sank a putt for par.

“It was a clutch putt. He had ice in his veins,” Reid said.

Dentino said the victory over its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rival was sweet.

“We thought we were better than Center Grove and if we came out here and played good golf, we could beat them. We ended up being right,” Dentino said. “Props to them for sticking with us at the end. We feel good to win a state championship on our home course.”

Sophomore Clay Stirsman was low for Carmel with a 146 (71-75), finishing in a three-way tie for third place.

Former-Carmel High School softball payer Kelsi Rynard had a memorable career at her alma mater.

SOFTBALL However, she wasn’t even thinking about going into the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Softball Hall of Fame at age 25.

“It was a surprise,” said Rynard, whose maiden name is Jones. “I didn’t know how long after I was done or if it was even a possibility. I received an email that my former high school coach had nominated me.

I really didn’t figure I’d get in because I figured there were other people more deserving. I found out they were going to induct me and it’s been cool, for sure.”

CHS softball coach Emily Good is thrilled her nomination led to Rynard’s induction.

The three-time all-state member will be inducted June 22 at a banquet at Edgewood High School in Ellettsville.

“Very few have the opportunities, let alone the accomplishments that Kelsi has had throughout her softball career,” Good said. “She has been successful at every level and continues to give back to the game she loves.”

Rynard was named the Gatorade Indiana High School Softball Player of the Year as a senior in 2011. Rynard, a center fielder, batted .464 in leading the Greyhounds to a Class 4A state title that season. She led the state in runs batted in with 52 in 2009.

Rynard played two seasons at Missouri (2012-13) before transferring to Louisville for her final two seasons (2014-15).

“I made the regional all four years in college and went to the super regional my two years at Missouri,” she said. “To go to the postseason all four years was special.”

She chose personal and playing-time reasons for her transfer.

Cherish hosts annual breakfast

By Riya Chinni • news@currentincarmel.com Cherish shared its mission to protect and advocate for children in Hamilton County at its June 7 annual breakFUNDRAISER fast at the Delaware Township Community Center in Fishers. The Noblesville nonprofit is a Child Advocacy Center that provides free services that include trauma therapy, counseling and medical help.

Cherish President Tom Dickey kicked off the event by introducing the Cherish team, followed by a National Children’s Alliance video and a statement from Wendy Gamble, executive director and founding member.

Gamble said everything the organization accomplishes could not be done without the large Hamilton community team.

“We will need a bigger venue (for the breakfast) next year, which is a phenomenal thing,” Gamble said.

While attendees enjoyed breakfast, keynote speaker Kristen Boice explained how the body reacts to emotional trauma. As a family therapist, Boice sees a lot of it, especially in kids who are removed from traumatic situations.

Dickey followed up the keynote with an anecdote about fostering kids and said he and his wife have paved the way for better futures of more than 30 children.

“Our role is to attack that moment in time to turn the future around for that child,” Dickey said.

Gamble concluded the breakfast by asking attendees to take a moment to recognize the children whose names were on the hearts placed at tables, kids who would come through Cherish in the next few months.

DISPATCHES Construction accident — A construction worker is recovering after being stuck in a collapsed hole on a work site on Horbeck Street in The Village of West Clay. Carmel Fire Dept. spokesman Tim Griffin said that emergency responders were able to dig him out in less than an hour. He was transported to the hospital in stable condition with “possible lower leg injuries,” Griffin said. The Westfield Fire Dept. assisted with the rescue.

Church launches ladies tea room

By Heather Collins news@currentincarmel.com Carmel’s Fellowship in Christ Church has always sought to live up to its name. Last month, women of the church FAITH joined together to create a tea room to provide fellowship and fun for all women in the community.

Fellowship in Christ Church hosts the tea room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays in the basement of the church at 310 N. Range Line Rd. Verona Xanders and Lisa Lawrence, wives of the church’s pastors, came up with the idea. The space was formerly a coffee house called the Catacombs.

“We’re all sisters in the world. Wherever we are, we are sisters,” Xanders said. “This place is like a little haven down here for anyone that just needs a friend.”

Church member Leslie Doctor previously worked in a tea room and connected with fellow church member Terri Peterson to launch the tea room in early May. Diane Mrsny decorated the space.

“It’s important to have a place where you can be yourself,” Peterson said. “I feel like here we have a place that’s a peaceful, joy-

ful place for women to come.”

The weekly event is open to all women in the community and free to attend. Complimentary tea, coffee, baked goods and fruit are served. The space also has a play area for children.

“Having tea and scones and pleasant music in the background is always conducive to a peaceful atmosphere,” Doctor said.

In the future, the group wants to have discussions about women in the Bible and invite guest speakers.

Carmel mom’s late son honored

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Mother’s Day was a memorable one for Melanie Thompson Smith this year.

The Carmel resident IN MEMORY learned a few days before Mother’s Day that Drake Darrah was going to run in honor of her late son as part of the Flags 4 Fallen program.

During the Byline Bank Chicago Spring Half Marathon & 10K in Grant Park May 20, Darrah, from the Chicago area, ran with the flag to honor Smith’s son, Marine Cpl. Lance Thompson. Thompson died at age 21 on Nov. 15, 2004, as a result of a truck bomb on his second tour of duty in Iraq. “(Darrah) had Lance’s picture on his back,” Smith said. “I can’t tell what an impact it had to meet Drake and his family, to learn about Drake and the things he and Lance had that were so similar. It was an emotional day. Drake’s mother said Drake had run many races for fallen soldiers and this was the first time a soldier’s family member had been at his race.”

Smith said Darrah told her he wanted to join the service when he was young but wasn’t able to do, so he runs to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.

“We cheered for him when he came across the finish line. It was just really an awesome thing to see him carrying that flag across the line,” Smith said. “When they started folding the flag, it brought back so many memories because Lance loved the flag. He and his cousin, also a Marine, would fold family flags, and I have several pictures of them doing that.”

The summer lunch food drive supported the Carmel Summer Lunch Program, which assists children in Carmel Clay Schools who are dealing with food insecurity. Last summer, the Carmel Summer Lunch Program provided 14,300 meals to households in need during the 11-weeks of summer.

“We feel that through this community collaboration, we have filled a big need and filled our children’s bellies, too,” said Maggie Figge, early intervention advocate.

Tree peonies highlight garden

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Since retiring from Eli Lilly 10 years ago, Carmel’s Kwan Hui has been hard at work.

Each day the Carmel resiPROFILE dent spends eight to 10 hours in his four-season garden, carefully cultivating everything from magnolias to Concord grapes and even a banana tree, although it doesn’t last long in Indiana’s climate.

But the highlight of Hui’s garden is the 60-plus tree peonies scattered throughout the 1.5-acre lot in the Woodland Springs neighborhood. Hui estimates that his collection of the bushes is among the largest in the area.

“Some of my gardening friends do have a couple in their yards, but to my best knowledge no private home garden has so many in number and varieties as I do, perhaps not even in public gardens in the Indy vicinity,” said Hui, who moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. approximately 50 years ago.

Hoosiers may be familiar with the peony, Indiana’s state flower, which has some similarities to the slower-growing tree peony. Native to China and a popular theme in

traditional Chinese paintings, tree peonies grow on a woody shrub and bloom much larger than garden peonies.

Hui’s tree peonies hit their peak around Mother’s Day, the same weekend he held an open house for fellow gardeners and friends to admire the bushes and many other plants and structures carefully laid out in his garden on Woodland Lake.

Its blooms are gone now, but Hui is hoping for a cold winter, as long periods of freezing temperatures lead to better blooms when warm weather arrives.

After nearly 2 decades of growth, University High School unveils master plan for campus

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com University High School has grown a lot in the 18 years since it opened.

Established in the fall of 2000, the school was made possible through a $1.5 million donation along with other gifts from board members that allowed the private institution to build four modular classrooms and refurbish existing farmhouses on the West 116th Street property in Carmel. There were only 28 students and 10 faculty that first year.

An 18,000-square-foot building was completed the next year, and a 12,000-squarefoot addition was completed in 2003.

In spring 2007, another new building finally eliminated the need for portable classrooms.

Now, nearly two decades after the first freshman class, the UHS board of directors has completed a master plan for its 115-acre property, which includes a vision of what the campus could become.

The vision includes a new arts building, an outdoor amphitheater, more parking, building expansions, baseball and softball fields, a track and field facility, a soccer field and a cross country course. The vision encompasses 85 acres, with a surplus space that could be sold or used for a community partner.

Currently, UHS has 310 students, and the new space could allow it to grow to up to 400, although that might not be in the plan, according to Ashley Crockett-Lohr, UHS director of communications.

“We needed a plan to figure out what we need and don’t need,” she said.

A big part of the plan was to look at the natural environment on the property. Stacey Summitt-Mann, a UHS science teacher, worked with her environmental students and came up with an ecological design for the space that will be part of the first phase of the master plan.

“We started to explore different areas and started to ask what is going to be in this space,” she said. “We want this to be a community asset.”

Summitt-Mann said considerable thought was put into how to connect the walking paths and cross-country trails to the area, including West Park across the street from UHS. The school will try to strike a balance between offering its campus to the commu-

nity as an amenity while ensuring campus safety and security. Phase I includes a wetland habitat and a multi-purpose trail system. The amphitheater is nearby and could be used for outdoor school gatherings, community events, plays, musicals, concerts and other gatherings.

Another central part of the proposed expansion is athletics. Crockett-Lohr said about two-thirds of UHS students are involved in sports. The school has tennis courts and a soccer field but many other sports teams have to play off campus.

The arts building could house anything from an art gallery to a coffee shop.

Although the school doesn’t have an endowment, the master plan gives parents, alumni, donors and neighbors an idea of where UHS would like to go in the future.

How fast it gets there will depend on donations and administrative decisions.

But the overall message is that UHS expects to be around for a long time.

And while the oldest alumni of UHS are in their early 30s, Crockett-Lohr said she expects many graduates will be interested in seeing the vision become reality as they prepare to perhaps some day send their own kids to UHS.

Commentary by Terry Anker As the tide rolls in with the phases of the moon, the afternoon surge of email and other communication is predictable. New information is posted, articles published and requests sent. We go to our mailbox, whether encountering physical correspondence or the electronic sort, to address the interactions.

Some is of the marketing variety, trying to draw attention to their product, service or nonpprofit. Some is of the business variety, updates to balances, changes to agreements or reminders for needed action.

And still more is of a weighty collection of matters – personal and business letters, checks and deposits or pressing decisions that require our input. We triage, sort and ameliorate each. Most are quickly scanned and recycled. Others are processed and cataloged. But a few require response.

Questions are asked with the sender holding motion until our rejoinder.

With note of the irony, it is in this very most important of the categories where we often procrastinate. Setting aside critical matters for future consideration, we postpone our attentions until some other, nonspecific time. When a message contains three questions (two to be answered with little thought and one requiring some deliberation), we respond only to the two, ignoring what must have been the most pressing in the mind of the sender.

Shouldn’t we make clear our intention to answer (or not) the unanswered at some defined point yet to come? Like an undiagnosed and selective attention deficit disorder, are we dancing around the most difficult and, one could surmise, most critical while paying clear attention to the inconsequential?

Of course, the downside was the cost of a hotel room and the dead battery she discovered at the onset of Day 2. Prep team, we’re gonna need more Chardonnay!

Doo and I elected last-minute to drive straight through the night. There was virtually no traffic, only one Cracker Barrel stop and markedly lower brattiness levels among our kids. But my eyes started crossing around 1 a.m., Doo almost killed us outside of Asheville with his sleep-deprived impersonation of a Formula 1 racer, and our entire six-pack was on the verge of mutually assured destruction as we pulled up to the beach house that wouldn’t be available for another eight hours.

Charles "Fred" Prine Carmel - Born to a humble Indianapolis home, Fred Prine worked his way up the ranks of the metal trade, founding Westfield Steel and leading a major industrial trade group into the 21st century.

Charles F. Prine, 73, of Carmel, died early Monday from pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Indianapolis on May 16, 1945 to Charles L. Prine, a worker on the Allison Division's fighter engine line, and Annabelle (Satterlee) Prine. They raised him in Indianapolis and the Illinois towns of Pekin and Paris. He returned to graduate from Broad Ripple High School in 1963.

During the day Prine worked on the loading dock at L.S. Ayres and Company before catching on as an inside salesman at Indianapolis Machinery, a downtown steel service center. At night he attended Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

After rising to become Machinery's operations and sales office manager, in 1976 he jumped to Chicago-based Metron Steel. In the same year, he wed Karyn P. (Van Korn) Prine and tried to convert her into an Indiana University basketball fan.

Prine rose to become Machinery's operations manager but he left in 1977 to help found Westfield Steel, Inc. Initially envisioned as a warehouse attached to an established fabricating shop in rural Hamilton County, Prine turned it into a large regional service center. He acquired Terre Haute's Shaw Equipment Company in 1995.

With Karyn on his salesforce, Prine became the sole owner in 1999. Ten years later, Westfield launched a trucking subsidiary and, in 2016, purchased Ohio-based Remington Steel.

He served on the board of the North American Steel Alliance, a purchasing cooperative for metals service centers in Canada and the United States. As the group's chairman, he oversaw a push to recruit new members. Today, the organization boasts 121 steel companies that combine to generate nearly $9 billion in annual revenues.

Prine was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by wife Karyn, sons Carl and Fritz, and grandchildren Mia, Spencer, Marcus, Oberon and Maeve.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, at Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Boulevard West Dr., in Indianapolis.

Let’s make our state safer Editor, Recently, I was out canvassing Carmel neighborhoods, asking voters what their No. 1 issue priority was. Several responded with keeping their kids safe in school. One mom who stood at the doorway with her young son stated she was scared to send her child off to school on the bus in the morning. And then the next morning the Noblesville West Middle School shooting happened.

The Center for Disease Control’s latest statistics on gun violence ranks Indiana 18th with an average of 15 firearm deaths per 100,000 people. Compare that with the top ​five safest states with rates of 5.5 to 3.4 firearm deaths per 100,000 people. Those states​– Connecticut, Hawaii, New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts – all have enacted multiple common-sense gun laws.

And they are working.

We can make our state safer. ​Eight​states – Illinois, Florida, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington and Rhode Island – already have, just since the Febru-

ary shooting in Parkland, Fla. Additionally, four northeast Democratic governors announced the formation of a state-based alliance to strengthen gun controls.

There are solutions. No parent should have to fear for their children’s safety when they are at school. We must demand our elected officials prioritize our safety as citizens with common-sense gun laws now to keep our kids safe. That includes more investment, education and legislation for mental health and wellness, restricting firearm access and research.

Gov. Holcomb, this issue is ​now in our ​ backyard. Let’s do what Hoosiers do best and take care of each other. A state that works must first and foremost be a safe place to live. Please take bold steps now to protect the citizens of Indiana. Our children’s lives depend on it.

Here’s my 2 cents Commentary by Dick Wolfsie If you were the last person leaving your favorite restaurant and the only umbrella in the coatroom looked just like HUMOR yours (but you knew it wasn’t yours), would you take it? That would be very wrong, and I wouldn’t do it. Unless, of course, it was raining.

Here are some hypothetical situations and how I would advise anyone faced with these dilemmas: Q: I have been a waitress at a steak house for 35 years and I have taken home a bottle of ketchup every night since 1985. I now have 9,000 bottles in my garage. Now I feel guilty but don’t want to get in trouble just before I retire.

A: Returning them all at once would raise suspicion. Return them the same way you acquired them. So, delay your retirement or eat there every night until 2040.

Q: When traveling I take the little bottles of shampoo and conditioner from the hotel bathroom. The desk clerk said the business expects it. I recently picked up a Sony TV and a General Electric hair dryer from the Westin. Should I stop?

A: Only after you cross the border.

Q: My neighbor doesn’t know I mow his lawn when he’s at work. It’s driving him crazy that his grass never grows. Should I tell him?

A: And ruin this perfect practical joke?

By Renee Larr news@currentincarmel.com Wine lovers will be able to enjoy a drink while helping a good cause June 25. The Catherine Peachey FUNDRAISER Fund will host the fourth annual Wine Tasting with Peachey event from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Peace Water Winery in Carmel.

“The Catherine Peachey Fund raises money for breast cancer research in the state of Indiana,” said Stephanie Lesher, director of The Catherine Peachey Fund.

“We granted approximately $3 million over the last 24 years. We are a 100 percent volunteer organization. About a year and a half ago we joined the Heroes Foundation, which is another local cancer organization in Indianapolis.”

The event costs $30 to attend. Guests can choose to do a wine tasting or enjoy a full glass of wine.

“We will have appetizers and desserts for everyone to enjoy,” Lesher said. “We’ll have some live music on the back patio.

Kendra Scott is doing a pop-up shop for us at the event. Then they will donate back 20 percent of what they sell.”

“We will have a short program with one of our researchers just to let people know a little bit more about the work we do,” Lesher said.

Frame shop to celebrate 50 years

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com John Mallon and his wife, Barbara, opened a frame shop, Wonderlin Galleries, at the corner of 49th and ANNIVERSARY Pennsylvania streets in Indianapolis in late May 1968.

Along with partner Ron Mikulla, Mallon, a 78-year-old north Indianapolis resident, began a business that, despite several changes, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month. Mallon bought out Mikulla in the 1980s.

“After two years we changed the name to Frame Designs,” Mallon said. “We were on that corner for 37 years.”

The company is holding an anniversary sale through June 30 at Editions LimitedFrame Designs, 506 S. Range Line Rd., Carmel. The Mallons have had a Carmel business in the same spot since 1974. The business now focuses on fine art, custom framing, residential and corporate art consulting.

“We’ve survived the ebb and flow of the art-framing world,” Mallon said. “It’s been a bittersweet battle, up and down, good and bad. It’s been fun.”

Youth piano competition showcases talent, offers scholarships

By Maria Cook editorial@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition will PERFORMANCE return to Carmel for its fifth year. From June 27 to July 1, artists ages 5 to 18 will compete for awards and scholarships.

Competitors represent 16 states and 15 nations, including China, the United Kingdom and Russia. Areas of competition include solo, duet and concerto.

Carmel Klavier President Irina Gorin has more than 35 years of experience teaching piano to grade-school students, both in the Ukraine and the U.S. After several years of observing other international piano competitions, Gorin realized there was a need for a more inclusive competition which could bring youth from around the world to Carmel.

“I always was taking my students to numerous local, national and international competitions and was not happy with politics, venues, judging system, rivalry and high costs in many,” Gorin said. “I always wanted the competition for youth to be a celebration of talent, encouragement and motivation for children. I had this idea of bringing young talents from around the world to Carmel and giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent in beautiful buildings and stages as well as to attract world-renowned judges and artists to educate the youth and perform for the Carmel community and competition participants.”

In addition to competing for scholarships, such as the $16,000 scholarship offered to a selected finalist by Indiana Wesleyan University, Carmel Klavier participants also compete for a variety of prestigious opportunities. In 2017, 9-yearold Lauren Lo, Fishers, was a recipient of the Contemporary Composer’s Award presented by Elena Cobb. The award includes an opportunity to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where stars such as The Beatles and Julie Andrews have performed.

“I got to play on Elton John’s red piano,” Lo said after her April 5 performance.

Lo’s mother, Christine Lo, said Carmel Klavier has changed the way her daughter approaches piano.

“The experience has given her more confidence with performing in public and has inspired her to practice even more,” Christine Lo said. “The camaraderie and energy in the recital hall was electric and definitely something she will cherish for a lifetime. Opportunities of this nature are so positive and give young performers like Lauren a chance to connect with other young pianists and to see the world.”

For older competitors, Carmel Klavier can be an important starting point for

their musical careers. Ari Brown, Carmel, competed in Carmel Klavier in 2014. He is now 21 years old and studying music composition at the New England Conservatory of Music and Computer Science at Tufts University in Boston.

“Whether or not I won, practicing to compete at the rigorous level set by the Carmel Klavier both developed work ethic and creativity that I can now apply to problem-solving in so many other fields,” Brown said. “Practicing for my performance, attending master classes and engaging with the other performers at Carmel Klavier were invaluable experiences in my path to attending New England Conservatory of Music. The Carmel Klavier strikes an unprecedented balance between rewarding excellence and celebrating the arts with everyone, which is a difficult task in competitive environments. All competitors walk away feeling a sense of personal accomplishment, which is the type of support that fueled my desire to continue into a creative major.”

Carmel Klavier will take place at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Selected finalists also will have an opportunity to perform solos, concertos, duets, ensembles and the pieces of featured composers at The Palladium in Carmel.

Heartland Film presents Indy Shorts Film Fest editorial@youarecurrent.com Heartland Film, Inc., a nonprofit arts organization, is expanding to bring a new festival to Indianapolis in support of the annual Heartland International Film Festival. Indy Shorts International Film Fest (Indy Shorts), will exclusively feature films less than 40 minutes in length July 26 to 29 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.

Gregory Hancock of GHDT said Quasimodo is the most challenging role he’s ever created for a dancer. Jones doesn’t have a fake hunch on his back.

Instead, he finds different ways to contort and distort his body to portray the central character of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” like bending, lifting and changing his footing.

“I feel like every time I run it, I find new ways to find that distortion within the character,” Jones said.

GHDT’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” set for 7 p.m. June 29 and 30 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, reminds people to look past appearances. “(Quasimodo) is not the suave, handsome man,” Jones said. “But in the end, he’s one of the most beautiful characters in the show.”

she believes the characters connect so well because of their humanity.

The show is one of GHDT’s most elaborate and intricate full-length ballets and a favorite of Hancock’s. The performance will be the closer for GHDT’s 20th anniversary season.

“The story is so beautiful and tragic, and then to interpret that into dance is really beautiful,” Hancock said. “It’s my all-time favorite piece.”

Doobie Brothers return

CONCERT “It’s nice playing with other bands whose music you admire and enjoy,” Simmons said. “To check out what they’re doing every night is a big perk for other musicians, to be able to suck in the talent and artistry.”

The Doobie Brothers will join Steely Dan in a 7:30 p.m. concert June 24 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center. The Doobie Brothers toured with Journey in 2016 and Chicago in 2017. The Doobies will join the Eagles for concerts in San Francisco and San Diego in September.

“It’s kind of standard to give concertgoers a little more bang for their buck,” Simmons said. “Our entire career we’ve performed with other bands on and off. We play some shows on our own, too. These tours are a little more upscale.”

Simmons, 69, couldn’t imagine being part of the Doobie Brothers this long when they formed in 1970.

“I didn’t even think I’d be alive this long, to be honest with you,” Simmons said. “It’s

Simmons said he’s been fortunate to work with great songwriters. He wrote several songs for the Doobies, including the No. 1 hit “Black Water.”

Simmons has been the one constant in the band. Tom Johnston had to take a leave of absence for health reasons in 1975 and was replaced by Michael McDonald, who brought a more soulful approach. Johnston eventually quit the band in 1977. The band disbanded in 1982 with McDonald pursuing a solo career. The Doobies reformed in 1987 with Johnston back on lead vocals.

CHS students give back

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School student Eve Swanson has been touched by how many people have pitched in to help her family as her ART mother, Kris, battles stage 4 colon cancer.

So, she had an idea to help others.

“I’ve always liked art and I’ve been thinking it’s a good thing to give back to the community,” Swanson said. “Since Indiana has a high rate of (domestic) abuse, I figured it would be a good place to donate.”

The ARTrageous event, featuring a silent auction benefitting Coburn Place, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. June 24 at SoHo Cafe and Gallery, 620 S. Range Line Rd., Carmel. Coburn Place in Indianapolis provides a safe haven for empowered victims of intimate partner violence to live as survivors.

Swanson said they collected several pieces of artwork from CHS students along with some professional artists from Indianapolis and the Detroit area. Other submissions are from other high schools. Swanson estimated there will be approximately 100 pieces.

“We have a goal to raise $1,500 so we can donate and make a room for someone there,” said Swanson, whose mother was diagnosed with colon cancer in October 2017.

“I’m still battling. I go to chemotherapy every other week,” Kris Swanson said. “I’m still hoping for a victory.”

Providing support has been what her daughter and friends are doing with the fundraiser.

“I think it’s fantastic,” Kris Swanson said. “They’re certainly taking over and doing most on their own. They’re very independent.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Meridian Kessler three seasons room Commentary by Larry Greene

Background info: This 1925 bungalow in the Meridian Kessler neighborhood of northern Indianapolis was the perfect space for the owner and family, but the backyard lacked the same charm the rest of the home possessed.

The goal was to create a space that the homeowner and family can utilize throughout more of the year for leisure and entertainment.

1. The largest transformation came from eliminating the deck and replacing it with a three-seasons porch. The porch was created using EZE-Breeze Venting Windows, which allow for up to 75 percent ventilation.

2. The interior of the three-seasons room was finished with the addition of a gas fireplace, plank-wood flooring and a lighting plan.

3. The exterior of the porch addition was finished to match the remainder of the home, making the addition appear as if it were a part of the original home.

4. Another major change came from the addition of a stamped concrete patio with a seating wall and gas fire pit.

Mysterious order of adjectives Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt

Jaipur’s giant silver jars Commentary by Don Knebel According to the “Guinness Book of World Records,” the world’s heaviest silver objects are two enormous jars on display in Jaipur, India. An identical jar lies at the TRAVEL bottom of the Red Sea. In the 18th century, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II constructed a city in northwest India to be the capital of his Amber Kingdom. He named the city Jaipur after himself and erected an imposing palace near the city’s center. In 1876, important city buildings, including the palace, were painted pink to celebrate the official visit of Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Edward, making Jaipur the Pink City. Upon Victoria’s death in 1901, Edward, now King Edward VII of England and Emperor of India, invited Jaipur’s then-ruling maharaja, Madho Singh II, to his coronation.

Hindu religious leaders conditioned Madho Singh’s trip on finding a ship that had never served beef and carrying with him sufficient water so that he and his entourage would never have to use English water for drinking or bathing. A brand new

steamboat satisfied the first condition.

The second condition was met by filling each of three identical silver jars with 900 gallons of water from the sacred Ganges River. Each jar, made from 14,000 melted silver coins, was more than 5 feet tall and weighed 750 pounds. During the ship’s passage through the Red Sea on the way to London, the waters became unusually rough. Worried Hindu priests on board convinced the maharaja to placate Varuna, the god of the sea, by tossing him one of the silver jars, after which the trip proceeded without incident. The maharaja attended the king’s coronation and the king inspected the maharaja’s water jars. The two remaining jars are now displayed inside Jaipur’s Pink City Palace, where guards use their mirror-like surfaces to assure that their turbans are positioned correctly.

Everyone’s on the lookout for their next clever party anecdote for that awkward pause between the GRAMMAR GUY cheese course and dessert (I know I am). The perfect quip at the perfect time will make you feel like a million bucks in the tuxedo people are now assuming you own. If you memorize today’s grammar gem, you’re guaranteed to be the hero at the next soiree or gala you attend.

Do you remember the pneumonic device from math that goes, “Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally?” This helps you remember the order of operations in a math equation (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction). In English, there’s an equivalent but largely unknown “order of operations” for the order in which adjectives go in front of a noun. Even more shocking is that this rule is taught to most non-native speakers, but native speakers are never taught it. The order is quantity, opinion, size, physical quality, shape, age, color, origin, material, type, purpose, noun.

We are never formally taught this adjective order, but we know that “five wrinkly

octogenarian bronze Italian sunbathers” sounds correct (albeit an odd scenario), but if you say “octogenarian five Italian wrinkly bronze sunbathers,” you sound like a total weirdo. You don’t know how you know that’s wrong; you just know it.

Let’s try it with some simpler phrases.

You’d never say “old little lady”; you would always say “little old lady.” You’ve probably heard someone remark about their baby’s “big brown eyes,” but if that same parent went on about their baby’s “brown big eyes” you’d think something was wrong with them. Try saying these phrases out loud and you’ll hear how truly ridiculous adjectives in the wrong order sound to your English-preferring ears.

And, while I don’t have a clever pneumonic device for adjective order, it’s something you should feel privileged not to know — unless, that is, you want to be the talk of your town’s small secretive Sicilian social circle.
