Keystone, 96th roundabout still mostly on schedule

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com As work to create a roundabout at the intersection of 96th Street and Keystone Parkway nears the oneCONSTRUCTION year mark, city leaders say the project is still on track to be substantially completed by the end of the year and that it hasn’t led to many complaints from drivers.

Lane restrictions began June 4, 2018, to transform one of Carmel’s busiest intersections into a roundabout to allow traffic to flow north and south through the city without stopping. Crews have spent much of this year building ramps that will open on or after June 17 for drivers on Keystone Parkway to travel through the intersection as work begins on the next phase of the project. The traffic lights will be removed at this time.

The city announced May 30 that a planned 60-day closure of 96th Street at Keystone Parkway has been increased to 150 days because of unexpected utility delays. The extended closure should allow major portions of the project to wrap up by Dec. 31; otherwise, construction could stretch into the summer of 2020. Drivers will be able to make right turns onto 96th Street during the closure.

as disruptive as expected. Michael Strauss, who lives near 106th Street and Keystone Parkway, said the city has done an “excellent job” keeping the road open so far, and he is looking forward to a much-improved commute when the project is complete.

“Keystone has always had a lot of traffic as well as backups at 96th Street,” he said. “Going north in the evening has created a larger backup during rush hour, but I haven’t noticed any greater backup going south.”

Other drivers, such as Maria Demko, are trying to avoid traveling through the intersection.

“If I needed to go somewhere that would be down that way I would try and find an alternative,” Demko said.

City Council President Jeff Worrell, whose district includes the project area, said most of

the feedback he’s heard has been about vehicles cutting through nearby neighborhoods.

“I haven’t received a whole lot of complaints about frustration about wait times or detours,” he said. “It’s been mostly about additional traffic in some of the neighborhoods, and we all know that will be short-lived.”

Work on the interchange is part of Carmel’s $43 million 96th Street Corridor Improvement Project, which aims to improve traffic flow and access to businesses from the White River to Keystone Parkway. In 2018, the city completed roundabouts on 96th Street and Priority Way at Hazel Dell Parkway, and this summer roundabouts will be built on 96th Street and Gray Road and Delegates Row. The city also plans to build a roundabout west of Keystone Parkway at Haverstick Road that is planned to be constructed this year.

Federal dollars to help fund new roundabouts

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel will receive more than $4.5 million in federal funding from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning CONSTRUCTION Organization to construct roundabouts at 106th Street and Westfield Boulevard and 96th Street and College Avenue. Carmel will be responsible to fund $1.1 million of the cost.

“We have been fortunate to get these grants in the past and it shows that we are serious about improving our transportation network and the quality of our air,” Carmel City Engineer Jeremy Kashman said. “These

two projects will benefit residents in the Home Place area and local motorists while at the same time reducing the amount of local taxpayer dollars needed to convert these intersections into roundabouts.”

MPO awarded the funds for projects that will go out to bid in State Fiscal Year 2024.

The city wants to expedite the timeline by getting environmental approvals and project design completed as soon as possible in case the funds become available before 2024.

“We may be able to bring them to construction one to two years sooner, but that depends on a lot of different factors,” city spokesman Dan McFeely said.

MPO is responsible for planning and pro-

gramming federal transportation funds in the eight-county central Indiana region. Other projects approved in this round of funding include roundabouts in Fishers, electric buses in Indianapolis and the widening of Dan Jones Road in Avon.

MPO received requests for funding for nearly 70 projects totaling $180 million. Projects were selected based on their impact on air quality, congestion, safety and other factors.

Previously, Carmel received federal funding to help cover the cost of roundabouts at Range Line Road and Carmel Drive, Penn and Carmel drives, 116th Street and Gray Road and 116th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway.

CHS explosion declared emergency

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees declared an emergency and awarded bids of more than $2.7 million for repairs at Carmel High EDUCATION School for damage caused by an explosion on Dec. 26, 2018.

The board approved the decision unanimously at its May 20 meeting. By declaring an emergency, state law allows the district to forego the normal process of advertising for bids or quotes as long as they are invited from at least two entities with experience in public work.

CCS solicited bids from 41 contractors and received responses from seven, leading to the $2.7 million approved at the board meeting.

The district has already paid more than $665,000 to cover initial repairs to secure the building after the blast. Insurance is expected to cover most of the costs except for the $75,000 deductible.

“From a financial standpoint, this incident was not hugely significant as far as our direct cost,” said Roger McMichael, CCS assistant superintendent for business affairs.

The total cost of the damage is still not known because the bid award did not include expenses such as fees for architects, construction managers and damaged furniture, McMichael said.

Repairs are expected to be complete by the end of August. At the end of the school year, the first floor of the fieldhouse, freshman gymnasium, girls volleyball locker room and boys basketball coaches office were still unusable.

Investigators determined a gas leak led to the explosion in a maintenance room, which injured two nearby workers. Approximately 100 other people in the building at the time were not injured.

Construction on a new access ramp from Lowes Way to Keystone Parkway is ongoing and expected to be complete this month.

Construction of a pathway along the north side of 126th Street to connect Keystone Parkway to Hazel Dell Parkway was expected to begin on or after June 1.

Guilford Road reconstruction was set to begin June 1 between Main Street and City Center Drive. A culvert replacement adjacent to Carmel Middle School also was expected to begin June 1. Construction on a new roundabout at Guilford Road and Main Street is expected to begin on or after Aug. 1.

Former teacher facing charges

A Warren Central High School teacher and softball coach was arrested last month for alleged sexual encounters that COURTS took place with a 15-year-old student at the coach’s Carmel home.

Brittney Mang, 29, has been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor and child solicitation for alleged incidents that occurred in mid-April.

Mang A probable cause affidavit states that Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept. investigators became aware of the situation after the student’s mother found concerning text messages between her daughter and Mang, including, “I want to rub your chest, snuggle, and cuddle” and “I need you and I want you.”

The student told investigators that she had known Mang since January 2019 and that Mang was her Spanish teacher and junior varsity softball coach. She said the relationship began as “motherly” but that it changed in mid-April when she spent several nights at Mang’s house in Home Place, the affidavit states.

Mang and the student told investigators that they kissed and touched each other sexually on more than one occasion, according to the affidavit. The encounters allegedly happened on a futon in Mang’s guest bedroom.

Warren Township Schools released a statement to local media.

“We have been notified of the results of the investigation concerning charges brought against one of our former employees. Throughout the investigation we have cooperated with authorities to the extent we were called upon. Although we cannot respond to the allegations specifically, we want everyone to know that we take seriously the responsibility and trust parents bestow on us to educate and protect their children when in our care. When an individual is accused of violating that trust, it should be, and is, an affront to us all,” the statement reads.

Current has reached out to Mang’s attorney for comment. A jury trial is set in Hamilton County for 9 a.m. Sept. 3.

GIVING BACK “I feel like we need to give back to the men and women in the Armed Forces,” said Hughey, whose late husband, Ed, was a Korean War veteran. “I feel it’s an important part of our church.”

Sandy Hughey, a Carmel resident, was the coordinator of the event that was conducted at the Camp Atterbury USO Facility May 18, which was Armed Forces Day. Hughey said the volunteers served more than 200 soldiers during the two-hour dinner. The Boomer Gang donated their time for a 2 1/2-hour musical performance.

“It was very well-received by our troops,” Hughey said. “They just kept thanking us for doing it.”

One soldier told Hughey the barbeque meal was a nice break from the usual Army fare.

“It was a church effort because we asked church members to write 200 letters of gratitude to the soldiers,” Hughey said.

Skating trio strikes gold

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Sofia-Alexandra Colon started out in ballet as a youngster before finding her true passion when she was 8 ACHIEVEMENT years old.

“My mom calls it the most expensive birthday party ever,” Colon said. “One of my friends invited me to skate.

I said, ‘Mom, I know you love ballet, but I just want to be a figure skater.’ From that day on, I skated.”

Soon after, she met Vivian Luo and Stephanie Moga. The three friends, who recently graduated from Carmel High School, received the United States Figure Skating Association Gold Level Achievement Graduating Seniors Award during a May 17 ceremony.

The three friends are members of the Ice Skating Club of Indianapolis and practice at the Zotec Partners Carmel Ice Skadium. Marie Vichova Millikan, their coach and a 1968 Olympic skater for Czechoslovakia, said it’s rare for three skaters to reach the gold level in the same year.

“They’ve all been state champions in their own categories,” Millikan said.

continue her skating career.

Moga, who plans to major in pre-dentistry at Purdue, said she has been trying to complete all the levels to get the gold certificate since she was young.

“I think when I come back to Carmel I will skate for fun, but I won’t be competing anymore after this summer,” Moga said.

Luo, who will attend Parsons School of Design in New York City, played violin in the CHS orchestra.

“I like combining the two,” Luo said. “I enjoy not only the skating aspect of it but the artistic aspect of it, the technical part of it with the expression of putting it together with music.”

Veteran shares tale of WWII justice

For Ernie Lorch, it was an amazing journey to justice.

Lorch’s father was one of MILITARY the dozens of Jewish people killed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht (“Night of Broken Glass”) in 1938. Shortly thereafter, Lorch emigrated from Germany to the U.S. with his mother.

Lorch said he heard of one incident at the end of the war that involved a prisoner being beaten by an interrogator.

“That was not approved. I wrote it up,” Lorch said. “All officers and (non-commissioned officers) sent a letter to the commanding general complaining about it. He came over and fired the man on the spot. I couldn’t imagine anything like that happening today, especially when you know what happened in Iraq.”

After the war, Lorch delivered 24 pris-

oners to Nuremberg, where the war trials were conducted. Lorch was born in Nuremberg.

“Many of these people were executed.

Some were found not guilty, some were jailed for the rest of their lives,” Lorch said.

“World War II was finally over. The Allies won, thank God. It was a long and costly war.”

Lorch said his grandmother had been in a concentration camp since 1942.

“I heard from headquarters that she was alive, released and taken to a little town near Munich,” Lorch said. “By Jeep I was able to get there and found her. She had fallen off a truck and broken an arm. The nuns in that town took good care of her.

Can you imagine that reunion? Another miracle, I was able to bring her to the United States.”

And Lorch watched as justice was served.

“My dad was murdered by the same evil people we now had in jail and I was delivering to the International Palace of Justice,” Lorch said. “Is there an answer to this question? Is there justice in this world after all?

For me, certainly there was.”

Celebrate Global Running Day

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com For members of the Carmel Runners Club, participating in Global Running Day is an ideal expression of the FITNESS group’s mission. “(The club) promotes running and walking opportunities year-round by hosting multiple-group runs and walks each week,” said Adam Peat, a CRC board member. “These outings are for everyone, regardless of age or pace. Social interaction is also a vital component in the club’s impact on its membership.”

Members will have the opportunity to combine running and socializing June 5 when they celebrate Global Running Day with a 3-mile run and cookout at Union Brewing Company in Carmel, 622 S. Range Line Rd. Of the club’s approximately 200 members, up to 70 are expected to participate. The run begins at 6 p.m. at Union Brewing, followed by the cookout, which will feature a live band. A $10 registration fee for club members includes dinner and a beer ticket.

The club annually participates in Global Running Day, a worldwide celebration of running that encourages physical activity.

“We typically partner with a local establishment along the Monon,” Peat said. “It’s a nice way to put a spotlight on being active.”

The Carmel Clay Public Library will hold its annual Edible Books Contest June 9. Contestants can bring in creations LIBRARY at 1 p.m., and the competition will be open to the public to view, vote and eat the treats an hour later.

Designs must be made completely out of food and be inspired by a book, whether it be the plot, a scene or the cover.

There are four competition categories: adult, youth, family and people’s choice.

Winners in each category receive gift cards.

“The competition came about because the library felt our patrons would love a program that would be a hands-on, creative way to show their love of books,” CCPL Assistant Librarian Kristen Stickeny said. “The turnout over the past few years has proven that to be true.”

Stickney said one of her favorite entries was a cake that doubled as a treasure chest with gold chocolate coins.

DISPATCH Bicycle Friendly Community — The League of American Bicyclists recognized the City of Carmel with a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community award, making it one of only 96 cities at the Silver level and 475 other bicycle friendly communities across the nation in building better places for people to bike.

Carmel has been a Bronze level city since 2006. The City of Carmel has more than 200 miles of path and greenway in its bike infrastructure network.

Carmel’s Chris Henry brings fresh perspective to historic Indy church

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Chris Henry has noticed some similarities between his new hometown and place of employment.

The North Carolina native moved to COVER STORY Carmel approximately one year ago after accepting the senior pastor position at Second Presbyterian Church on N. Meridian Street in Indianapolis. “(Carmel) is a community that is proud of what it has accomplished and hopeful about its future,” Henry said. “I feel exactly the same way about Second Presbyterian Church.”

The state’s largest Presbyterian church was founded in 1838, just one year after Carmel — then known as Bethlehem — came into existence. And both are in the midst of transformations that aim to attract new families and build a strong future.

Former Second Presbyterian Pastor Bill Enright, who still worships at the church, said the congregation — which draws more than 1,000 people for services each week — has experienced a “wonderful transition” as Henry completes his first year in the pulpit.

“Chris is a superb preacher. He is delightfully engaging,” Enright said. “He brings a youthful energy and vision and there is just a renewed spirit of excitement in the congregation.”

The church has experienced a 5 percent increase in attendance in the first four months of 2019 compared to the same period the previous year after experiencing many years of declining numbers.

‘NOT SUBURB PEOPLE’

Henry grew up spending a lot of time in church as the son of a Presbyterian minister. He always had a knack for public speaking and began attending Duke University in 2000 to study political science. During his time at Duke, a bishop became his mentor and reignited his love for the church. Henry decided to add a religion major and began preaching in a small Presbyterian church nearby.

After graduating from Duke, Henry moved to Georgia to attend Columbia Theological Seminary, where he met his wife, Sara Hayden. He finished his studies and accepted a pastoral position in a mid-size Atlanta church that served as a community center for the surrounding neighborhood.

During his seven years at the church, he and his wife welcomed their two sons to the family.

In July 2017, Second Presbyterian Church reached out to Henry to gauge his interest in relocating to Indiana. He had never been to the Hoosier state and wasn’t actively seeking a new position, but he decided to consider the opportunity in part because of Second Presbyterian’s reputation and

Hamilton counties.

“If God has placed us in this city, it’s up to us to figure out why and serve the people around us and be an active part of the community,” Henry said.

leadership within the denomination. Eight months later, he accepted the call to lead one of the largest churches in Indianapolis.

Henry and his wife looked at homes in several Indianapolis neighborhoods near the church, telling their Realtor “somewhat smugly” that they were “not suburb people,” he said. But after failing to find a good fit in their price range for a family with two young boys, they agreed to expand their search.

“After we looked at about 10 homes, my wife said, ‘I really think we need to see a house in Carmel,’” Henry said.

“Our Realtor said, ‘I will do that, but I’m going to warn you that you will love it. If you think of yourself as not suburb people, you might have an existential crisis on your hands.’”

The Realtor was right. The couple loved the first house they saw and struggled with what to do about it. They decided to make Carmel their new home after realizing that many attendees at Second Presbyterian also live in the area. Henry said they have never regretted their decision and are working to build connections between Marion and

At 36 years old, Henry is a good bit younger than the church’s previous two pastors and is tasked — as a newcomer — with bringing a fresh vision to the congregation without ignoring its nearly two centuries of history.

“There’s a place for a church like this in the 21st century.

I think we will see growth and vitality in the years ahead,” Henry said. “I think there’s something important about being a part of a church that is more significant than your current interest.”

Sally Anderson, an 86-year-old Fishers resident who became a member of the church in 1943, has been pleased with Henry’s leadership. She said his preaching style resonates with people of all ages.

“He has wonderful sermons,” Anderson said. “I have talked to a few people who are sitting around me in church who come from other congregations because they’ve heard about him.”

Among Henry’s goals are to make the church more accessible for busy families with young children, build bonds between different generations, increase ties in the surrounding community and let others know about all of the good things happening within Second Presbyterian’s doors.

“We don’t want to be a well-kept secret,” Henry said. “We have something really vital to offer the broader community, and if we don’t do a good job of sharing our story, we’re missing out on one aspect of our discipleship.”

CHURCH HISTORY Second Presbyterian Church was founded in 1838 and first pastored by Henry Ward Beecher, a renowned abolitionist and brother of author Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Its first location was on Monument Circle. In 1870, it moved to Vermont and Pennsylvania streets next to First Baptist Church. After World War I, the Indiana War Memorial was built between the two churches. The state purchased both church buildings in the 1950s and demolished them to create open space around the memorial.

In 1959, Second Presbyterian moved to its current site at 7700 N. Meridian St. in Indianapolis. First Baptist moved to 8600 N. College Ave. In addition to Beecher, other notable pastors at Second Presbyterian include Bill Hudnut, who later became mayor of Indianapolis from 1976 to 1992, and Hanford Edson, founder of the Indianapolis Public Library system.

LETTER Stamp Out Hunger succeeds again

Willing learners Commentary by Terry Anker So much of our lives is determined by social order. We wake by alarm or with the rising sun from our pillowed beds to take hot, daily showers, with all sort and manner of soaps and creams. Then comes coffee. Perhaps we make our own.

Perhaps we meander to the local shop to enjoy the collective ritual of order, wait, enjoy. Regardless the methodology, we behave very nearly identically to most like us.

A few may prefer sleeping in a bit more or tea rather than coffee. But, for the greater part of the whole, we follow norms.

Certainly, we can conceive of varied global exceptions. Countless, unequipped with flowing water, skip the daily bathing ritual. Notwithstanding, much of what we wrongly believe to be common to all humans is only inure to our defined social group. Even at home, many, whose background rendered them unequipped with the variances of these rules, are left behind. A local volunteer at a teen homeless shelter reported that their employment training starts not with resumebuilding but with basic instruction on use of alarm clocks, deodorant and appropriate language.

Some years ago, our company operated a business with several warehouse employees. Many were young and uneducated but eager.

Among the skills developed were basic banking (our primary lender opened accounts for each and met individually, time-management; and the notion that a foreman giving direction and the employee complying for compensation is not the same as the disrespect of personal servitude. Assuming our demands for conformity are justified, if others are willing to learn, why, so often, are we unwilling to teach?

mess with Mom! And once again, to further enhance this summer’s salt-mine experience, “Amish Day” will occur weekly. Udderly extraordinary products Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I received an email today with the subject: WHAT WOMEN WANT. I’m a sucker for anything that might make me a better husband. According to the ad, they want Dr. Hess Udder Ointment, a concoction created more than 100 years ago that makes your hands smooth and feet callus-free. I thought being sensitive, considerate and romantic was the key. This is how little I knew about the opposite sex.

With a name like Udder Ointment, it should either be something you spread over that specific part of the bovine anatomy, or it should come from the cow’s udder. Vegetable oil comes from vegetables and baby oil is for babies. On the other hand, there’s Lucas Oil and Olive Oyl. I could make fun of both of those names, but I like my seats on the 40-yard line and I’d never antagonize a woman whose boyfriend has huge forearms.

Dr. Hess introduced his original product to farmers who lamented that their cows’ udders were extremely raw and chapped.

The farmers applied this emollient cream to the cows’ semi-privates. Soon, it was discovered that those doing the milking

also benefited. Just what a guy needs when he’s tilling his 300 acres of corn: softened hands. Plus, after a session in the barn milking Elsie and shoveling manure, farmers found that their silky touch made their wives eager for romance. Dr. Hess was to become a very rich man. And a godfather several times over.

The Dr. Hess enterprise later developed a lip balm called the Udder Stick. Can you think of a product whose name better says, “Spread that on my kisser?”

The company Dr. Hess founded in 1898 has changed hands through the years.

Those hands were always soft and delicate, but a few of them got caught in the cookie jar, so now ownership is back in the family, with the founder’s great-granddaughter.

Java House now open

Java House opened its first NEW BIZ coffee bar May 9 at 14390 Clay Terrace Blvd. in Carmel.

“It’s our factory coffee experience brought to life so we can introduce the idea of cold-brewed coffee to Carmel residents and guests of the city,” Gelov said. “Coldbrewed is the process of taking roasted coffee steeping in cold water, and after it goes through the extraction process, you can serve it hot, cold or nitro in a variety of ways — black, cappuccino, latte, frappe. We have specialty coffee drinks as well.”

Gelov said using cold-brewed instead of hot gives the coffee a richer, smoother taste without the acid.

“Cold brew is becoming more popular. The way we do it at Java House is unique. We have a lot of intellectual property around the way we prepare,” Gelov said.

Gelov owns Heartland Food Products, which is Java House’s parent company and the owner and maker of Splenda, a sweetener. Java House is available at retailers throughout the nation.

“It’s an awesome location at Clay Terrace with a lot of great businesses and restaurants,” Gelov said. “We think it’s a great location for (customers) to experience this new coffee.”

Gelov’s daughter, Cassandra Moe, is the project manager for the new coffee house.

“She’s the leader behind this store concept,” Gelov said. “It was an idea from Heartland, and Cassandra really made it happen.”

Hotel proposed to anchor new mixed-use building

HOSPITALITY Illinois St. Yorktown-based Saamrajya LLC has filed plans to construct the 50,286-square-foot building on more than 3 acres of vacant land. An Avid hotel would

occupy most of the building. It is proposed to have 99 rooms in the building’s upper levels. The developer has requested a variance to allow the hotel lobby, laundry room and exercise area on the ground floor.

Avid operates hotels in Oklahoma, Texas and Florida, with others planned to open in Fort Wayne and Monona, Wis., this fall.

Creekside Middle School student expanding acting career

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Yuvi Hecht has been interested in acting for as long as he can remember.

“I was watching movies and I FILM said, ‘I want to be up there (on screen),’” Hecht said. “It sparked what I want to be when I’m older.”

Hecht, who will be in seventh grade at Creekside Middle School in the fall, has acted in several short films and commercials in the past 1 1/2 years. He was born in Hong Kong and lived there for seven years before his family moved to Austria for three years. The family moved to Carmel in December 2017.

Hecht’s short film “The Unicorn Sisters,” a drama from Starz TV Network, has won awards at several film festivals and is Oscar-eligible.

“My role was the coolest kid in school,” he said. “We were in Hollywood for 10 days (in June 2018). We started working memorizing lines for four days. The filming took three days in LA Castle Studios. We had a premiere of the movie with red carpet, the whole nine yards.”

The 10 days in Hollywood included a workshop. His sister, Tamar, 9, also had a small part in “The Unicorn Sisters.” The film included two professional actors and an actress.

“It was filmed in a real studio,” his mother Hadas Hecht said. “It was a nice dive into the industry.”

Hecht completed filming of the short film “Imp ” in Chicago this spring.

“Most of the films have been horror, dark, dying or getting shot,” Hecht said.

Hecht has acted in a comedy film, “Boy on the Bench,” which was filmed in Chicago.

Hecht has been managed by Carmelbased Wallflower Pictures for the past several months.

“They’re helping develop my acting career,” he said.

Hecht also has done some modeling and trained at John Casablancas Modeling and Career Center. When he was younger in

“I got into runway modeling and had a few photo shoots,” he said. “So, I just started with modeling, but I’m mostly focused on acting.”

Hecht was more into sports when he was younger. His parents are from Israel.

Hecht speaks Hebrew, German and English.

“He was training in the Brazilian martial arts, capoeira,” Hadas said. “Here in the United States, it’s easier to follow your dream as an actor because there are so many more opportunities. We got into this adventure with Starz TV network. That’s when he realized this is what he wanted to do. He was playing soccer before for the Indiana Fire. I told him he had to make a choice. That’s when he realized this is what he wants to do.”

Hecht gave up soccer in the summer

of 2018. His acting so impressed one film company that it added a part for him.

“I auditioned for a part where I was a 14- or 15-year-old,” Hecht said. “I was really emotional, and they came back in and loved it. I was too young for the role, but they created a new role for me.”

The short film raised awareness for anti-bullying and suicide prevention.

“It was a classroom of 14- and 15-yearolds, so they added a family for one of the kids,” Wallflowers Pictures President Trey Burton said.

His mother was happy to turn over managing his career so she could concentrate on finishing her doctorate in clinical psychology. Her husband, Ohad, is CEO of a software company in Indianapolis.

Concerts mark 25th year As Cool Creek Concert Series celebrates its 25th anniversary, one constant remains.

Blueprint for Improvement: A kitchen makeover on the Monon Commentary by Larry Greene

Background: Built in 2008, this Carmel townhome is beautifully nestled on the Monon Trail.

THE CHALLENGE The homeowner recently purchased this townhome and wanted to remodel before moving in. The kitchen and dining room were separated by a wall with a passthrough opening. The goal was to remove the wall to open the space while not losing any functionality or space in the new design.

THE SOLUTION Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room made the entire first floor appear dramatically more open and bright.

1. The existing cabinetry was in great condition; it was revitalized with new paint and hardware. The wine rack was custom-built to fit the cabinet opening.

2. The original kitchen had a triangular island; the new one features more seating and storage. The navy blue finish is fresh and stylish.

3. Gas lines were installed so the electric stovetop could be replaced with a gas range.

4. Other features include a quartz countertop, under-mount sink, pull-out trash/recycling bins and a beverage refrigerator.

Qanawat, previously called Canatha, was once the most important city in an area in southwest Syria known as TRAVEL Jabal al-Druze. Its remarkable ruins reflect the city’s importance to Romans and early Christians.

Canatha/Qanawat is on the western slope of a volcanic plateau halfway between Damascus and Amman, both among the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Canatha is probably the Biblical Kenath, captured for the Israelites by Nobah, a Manassite. In 63 B.C., Roman Gen. Pompey conquered the surrounding area and made Canatha, along with Damascus and Amman (Philadelphia), one of the cities of the Decapolis. These 10 autonomous cities took on the look of Rome, with column-lined streets, baths, temples and theaters. According to the Bible, many followers of Jesus came from the Decapolis, dominated at the time

by Gentiles. By the fourth century, Canatha was the seat of a Christian bishop and a popular pilgrimage destination. Bishop Theodosius of Canatha attended the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D., called to decide the nature of Jesus. When the Muslims

conquered the area in the seventh century, Canatha began to decline and was largely abandoned by the 18th century.

Today, Qanawat has a population of approximately 8,000, most of the residents Druze, a minority religious group for whom the surrounding region was named. A 300acre site surrounded by the city includes a number of partially reconstructed structures from the Roman and early Christian eras, including a Roman cistern, a theater, a nymphaeum and temples to local and Roman gods. The most famous ruin, called ElSarai or Seraya, was built as a Roman tem-

ple in the second century and features an atrium with 18 columns and a colonnaded portico. The 70-foot-long building was converted to a Christian basilica in the fourth century. Reflecting its importance to Christians, El-Serai includes a Greek-inscribed stone sarcophagus displaying a cross.

According to G.K. Chesterton, “The word ‘good’ has many meanings. For example, if a man were to shoot GRAMMAR GUY his grandmother at a range of five hundred yards, I should call him a good shot, but not necessarily a good man.” First of all, I have to tip my cap to Chesterton’s excellent use of the subjunctive case when he uses “were” in the second sentence. Secondly, “well” and “good” are often misunderstood in our language.

“I know the difference between well and good,” your inner voice is probably yelling right now. Great — you get a gold star!

Let’s review, shall we? Good is an adjective while well is an adverb (most of the time).

We’ll get to the “most of the time” part in a second.

Here’s what you already know about good and well. Good is an adjective. It should always be used to describe or modify nouns. For example: Nate is a good sportswriter. Well is (almost) always an adverb. Use it to modify a verb, adverb or an adjective. For example: He writes about the

Chiefs well. He does his job well.

Now, it’s time to reconcile the confusing exceptions. Only use “well” as an adverb when using linking verbs (including be, look or feel) that describe the state of someone’s health. Monica wasn’t feeling well the time her hand got chopped off. Yesterday I was sick; today I am well. I don’t feel well because I drank some water from the dilapidated well. You get the idea.

If we use “well” to describe someone’s health, we use “good” to describe someone’s emotional state of being. LeBron felt good about his decision to take his talents to Miami. Byron didn’t feel good after he lied to his kids about Santa. In these cases, we’re using “good” as an adverb.

So, the next time someone asks you how you’re doing, you can say, “I’m doing good” or “I’m doing well.” Depending on how you choose to answer the question, it’s perfectly acceptable to say “well” or “good.”
