Biobot, which is testing wastewater samples for COVID-19 from 400 sites in 42 states, is transitioning all lab work in-house beginning June 1. Previously, it charged $120 per sample to cover the cost of shipping, but in June the cost will rise to $1,200 to help pay for the increased staffing. Ghaeli said those affected by the backlog who choose to continue testing through Biobot will receive two samples tested for free in June. She also said redundancies will be built into the new system to prevent another backlog.

As the City of Carmel has waited for its results, it has found another solution to test its wastewater for COVID-19. The University of Notre Dame is ramping up to conduct similar testing that is federally funded, and Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the city plans to begin sending samples there early this month.

“We could test at 7 in the morning here, drive it up and have an answer that afternoon,” Brainard said.

Zagster is removing its bike share system in Carmel and several other communities as it deals with the fallout of PANDEMIC the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that Zagster will no longer be providing bike share services in your community,” Zagster wrote in a letter to the City of Carmel. “This was a difficult decision but a necessary one, for which we are truly sorry.”

The Massachusetts-based company said it plans to remove bikes and stations in Carmel between May 28 and June 12. Refunds will not be available.

Zagster debuted in Carmel in the spring of 2015. The program launched with bike docks near the Monon Greenway in the Carmel Arts & Design District and at City Center. Several additional docking stations

were added in recent years.

Carmel paid $1,320 annually for each of the 44 bicycles and tricycles in the city for a total of $58,080 per year. Several local companies and organizations sponsored the program, including Clay Terrace, Carmel Clay

Parks & Recreation and KAR Global.

Zagster officials did not respond to requests for comment. The program has also been shut down in several other markets, including in Georgia, Virginia and Illinois.

3rd neighborhood proposed in 3 years at 136th St., Keystone

Epcon Communities hopes the third time’s a charm for a parcel of land on the northeast corner of 136th CITY NEWS Street and Keystone Parkway.

The Ohio-based developer is proposing a 169-home, age-restricted neighborhood on a 59-acre site that has seen proposals from two other developers in the last three years. Beazer Homes withdrew a proposal it submitted in 2017, and after receiving city approval in March 2019, Old Town Companies decided not to pursue its project.

The Carmel Plan Commission discussed the site’s newest proposal, The Courtyards of Carmel, at its May 19 virtual meeting.

Epcon is proposing single-story homes for people 55 and older who are looking to downsize. The homes are expected to range from $375,000 to $575,000, with an average of $475,000. If the project is approved, construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2021.

Steve Hardin, an attorney speaking on behalf of Epcon, said developers attempted to replicate much of Old Town’s approved planned unit development, such as the amount of open space and preserving a historic home on the property. Differences include the age restriction and only building single-family homes on the site. Old Town’s plan included single-family homes and townhomes.

Another proposed difference is the entrance to the neighborhood. Old Town had planned to connect the entrance to the roundabout at 136th Street and Keystone Parkway, while Epcon said city engineers endorsed moving the entrance east along 136th Street.

The commission received dozens of letters from the public regarding the project, with many expressing concerns about density, increased traffic in an already congested area and design of the homes.

Hardin said the project’s density is 2.88 units per acre, only slightly higher than Old Town’s 2.81 units per acre. The city’s comprehensive plan calls for density between 1.4 and 4 units per acre on the site.

Epcon is working with Indiana Landmarks to preserve the site’s historic home, which was built in 1834. Hardin said Epcon will donate the home to Indiana Landmarks, which

will seek a buyer to renovate it. If it can’t find one, it will pay to renovate the site and then attempt to find a buyer. Epcon and Indiana Landmarks plan to place restrictions on the home to only allow it to be used for residential purposes, Hardin said.

Commissioner Carrie Holle, who lives near the proposed site, said the project’s density is a problem.

“The layout is not appealing. It looks very cookie-cutter to me,” she said. “The plan commission all these years has done a very good job preserving the aesthetic of Carmel in the new neighborhoods it approves. I wouldn’t be able to look at this and say I’m proud of this project. I think if we reduce some of the density we would have something to work with.”

Holle and other commissioners took issue with the calculation of green space, saying they don’t believe space surrounding the historic home should be counted because it will be private property.

The project is Epcon’s first foray in Indiana, although a franchisee is building Epcon homes in a Zionsville development known as The Courtyards of Zionsville.

The commission’s residential committee will review the project at its June 2 meeting before sending it back to the full plan commission for a final vote.

Climate plan feedback gathered

By Calina He news@currentincarmel.com The Carmel Green Initiative partnered with the City of Carmel to discuss the Carmel Climate Action ENVIRONMENT Plan through virtual meetings held May 13, 14 and 17. Miranda Frausto, the sustainability intern for the City of Carmel, presented the key ideas and led the discussion.

The plan is a result of the Climate Resilience and Recovery Resolution, passed by the Carmel City Council in early 2017. Carmel was the first city in Indiana to approve the resolution, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency. The plan will serve as a guide to identify the most effective strategies to reduce emissions, according to city officials.

The primary goal of the workshop, which was open to the public, was for participants to discuss, listen and learn from each other.

“The standard definition of sustainability is meeting the needs of today without compromising the needs of tomorrow,” Frausto said. “The way I see it is meeting all the three pillars of sustainability: people, profit,

planet.”

Frausto, an IUPUI student, shared her vision for sustainability during the workshop.

“I like to think of sustainability as everyone doing their part imperfectly instead of a few people doing it perfectly,” Frausto said.

“The main goal is to meet the future we all want for ourselves.”

During the workshop, members contributed to the conversation by answering polls about certain topics, such as sustainable initiatives. Participants shared opinions on topics such as their priorities and considerations about different initiatives. Some city council members participated and weighed in on the discussion.

Chemistry Olympiad — Two recent graduates of Carmel High School, Yannik Singh and Iris Yan, along with freshman Ge Robbie, are among the 20 finalists who will participate in the Chemistry Olympiad Virtual Study Camp from May 31 to June 12.

They outscored more than 16,000 others to qualify for the intensive virtual camp, where they will receive college-level training. At the conclusion of the study camp, the top four students will represent the U.S. at the 52nd International Chemistry Olympiad in July. Two additional students will be designated as alternates.

State officials reveal mental health, overdose trends

By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com Dr. Jennifer Sullivan, secretary of the Family of Social Services Administration, said the organization saw PANDEMIC encouraging and concerning mental health statistics in May, which was also Mental Health Awareness Month.

Through March and April of last year, 6 percent of all Medicaid mental health services were provided through telehealth, compared to 26 percent during the same two months this year, Sullivan said. The numbers came as Medicaid claims for mental health services remained steady between 2019 and 2020. In March and April of 2019, 524,253 Indiana residents were provided services. In March and April of this year, 513,010 were provided services, according to Medicaid claims filed for mental health services.

“What we’ve learned in a short period of time is that individuals often prefer this modality,” Sullivan said during a May 27 virtual press briefing. “Mental health providers have found a place for telehealth in their clinical practice.”

The state recently launched bewellindiana.org, an online mental health services hub that helps Hoosiers find resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sullivan said year-to-date statistics for

naloxone is troublesome. The lifesaving drug is used to treat narcotic overdoses, and its usage frequency helps state officials track the rates of substance-abuse disorders in the state.

Year-to-date statistics reveal Marion County reported the use of naloxone 587 times through May of last year. This year, 1,061 uses were reported by the same time, an increase of more than 80 percent. Overall, naloxone use has increased by more than 35 percent compared to last year at this time, according to data from the FSSA. “I saw reports from around Indiana and the rest of the country this weekend of people who were packed in pools or at restaurants, shoulder-to-shoulder, and without wearing masks, not practicing social distancing,” Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box said during a May 27 virtual press briefing. “We do not want to see that number of cases spike because people got tired of these precautions and treated this as an unofficial start to summer and business as usual. These are not business-as-usual times. The threat from COVID-19 is still very real.”

OBITUARY John G. Garman, 88, passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2020. He was born Dec. 12, 1931. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Anne R. Garman. Together they had four children: Daria Crawford (Dave) of Indianapolis, John Garman Jr. (Amy) of Carmel, Charles Garman (Melinda) of Mount Vernon, IN, and Edie May Phillips (David) of Los Alamos, NM. He was Poppy “Poppy” to his 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild: Sam (Liz), Ben and Sara Crawford, Emily and Reilly Garman, Clara, Allie, Ian, Erin and Mark Garman, Nate, Emma and Elyse Phillips, and Quinn Garman.

John was born in Washington, D.C. He served in the Navy reserves as a sonar man before going to school and receiving his degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.

He worked for many years, in many places in the printing business. Later in life, John became very active in Veterans Affairs and causes. He was honored to have been chosen as an Honor Flight recipient. He was a renaissance man with a variety of interests: history, politics, entertainment, home repair and computers. He was involved in many organizations: Senior Police Academy, War Years, Roundtable and Americans for Prosperity.

John was loved by everyone. He was a kind and gentle soul. Many knew him by his wonderful sense of humor and the impish smile he always had on his face. He had a deep faith and loved a cold beer in the afternoon.

A Memorial Mass and celebration of life will be held at a later date at St. Elizabeth Seton.

Summer reading a launch pad Commentary by Sam Montgomery Growing up, I was an avid reader. I vividly remember slugging a bag full to the brim with books over my shoulder LIBRARY before giving up and handing it to my father, who would shoulder the load until we got home and I excitedly showed all of my library finds to my mom.

However, as a young reader, I often lacked direction. I loved the stories, but why was I reading them? Why was I spending so much time on books when I could be playing outside?

That’s where the Carmel Clay Public Library Summer Reading Program came into play. With prizes to win and fun to be had, it spurred my peers and me to read as much as possible.

I ended up becoming a proud participant and active member of the CCPL Teen Library Council, and I credit the Summer Reading Program with giving me the jumping-off point to be an active, contributing member of my community and a passionate reader.

Considering the amount of time physical distancing measures are likely to be in

place, I’ll still be reading a lot. But with the program online for the summer, I hope it will reach a much larger number of participants, especially considering the nature of the prizes offered.

This year, instead of individual prizes, most rewards for reading will be food donations to the Carmel Summer Meals programs, a Carmel Youth Assistance Program initiative that provides food for Carmel families during the summer. Children participating will be able to earn a badge for a free book.

Plus, everyone who signs up for the Summer Reading Program will have standing overdue fines erased.

Books have always offered a degree of escapism, so I hope you’ll pick one up alongside me as I try to forget I’m still at home.

Petty, a 2015 Hamilton Heights High School graduate who is working on her master’s degree in public history and library science at IUPUI, said when HCHS made the controversial decision to restrict access in 1995, it drew national attention.

Petty said it was a complicated decision because some descendants might not want to know if their relatives were Klan members or have others find out.

“Since this is such a controversial or high stakes part of history, we weren’t confident of control over that,” Petty said of keeping the records safe. “That was a factor in 1995 as well as today.”

A member of the Noblesville Diversity Coalition approached HCHS about changing the restricted policy.

The HCHS, working with the NDC, will present a program as part of the NDC’s fourpart series on the history of Noblesville.

A session, tentatively set for October, will focus on the mid-century era (1920-1970), which includes the history of the Ku Klux Klan in Hamilton County, and Noblesville, in particular.

Carmel Clay Schools is considering $106.5 million in bonds for several projects, including expansion of the COVER STORY Carmel High School performing arts facilities, a new natatorium and upgrades to several athletic facilities.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic leading to financial uncertainty for school districts, Roger McMichael, CCS assistant supt. for business affairs, said the projects are needed to responsibly maintain the school’s public property. He said delaying them would likely lead to costly maintenance and repairs.

“It’s likely that in an unfortunate time like this we very well may receive very competitive bids,” he said. “These estimates were projected before the crisis, so we think it’s very possible when the bids come in for these projects that they would be lower than what’s initially estimated here, which provides a very good value for the taxpayer.”

The projects are not expected to lead to an increase in the tax rate. Repayment of the bonds would begin in 2022. They are scheduled to be paid off within eight years.

“We would hope that the economy would begin to recover by then and certainly well before these projects would be paid off,” McMichael said.

Per state law, the projects will be funded through local property taxes, which are typically more stable than other forms of taxes, especially during a crisis. Funding for teachers comes from the state primarily through sales and income taxes.

The school board reviewed the plans at its May 18 virtual meeting. The following is an overview.

The number of students enrolled in band and orchestra and other programs have more than doubled since the band and orchestra complex was completed in 1993.

Kreke said storage space is limited, leading to valuable items sometimes being kept in hallways or along room perimeters, further decreasing available space and causing security issues.

The expansion and reconfiguration would create a larger space for orchestra rehearsals, a new large rehearsal space and additional storage space.

The auditorium is proposed to receive a mid-life renovation with new seating, lighting and acoustical upgrades and mechanical fixes. The studio theater will be relocated east of the auditorium, which will open up space for large choir rehearsals.

New natatorium

CCS is planning to spend $43 million to expand its natatorium by adding a 50-meter competition pool and zero-depth entry diving well. The new facility will be built north of the existing one and connect to it through a corridor. Construction is expected to begin in March 2022 and be complete by the end of 2023.

The existing natatorium is proposed to receive nearly $5 million in renovations, including the replacement of filtration and humidity control equipment. Work is expected to be done during the first half of 2024,

after the new natatorium is complete.

McMichael said the new pool will become the district’s primary competition pool, with the existing one set at a higher temperature and used mostly for recreation.

The project also includes expanded parking north of the new natatorium.

Athletic upgrades

CCS is proposing spending nearly $19 million to upgrade several athletic facilities.

Improvements at the CHS football stadium, which opened in 1991, include a new restroom, concession and locker room building south of the field; upgrading stadium lighting to LED; and renovating existing restrooms, the press box and locker rooms.

A grass practice field north of the stadium will be repurposed for shot put and discus events. These projects are expected to be constructed between February and June 2023.

At Murray Soccer Stadium, which is used for soccer and lacrosse, proposed upgrades include adding permanent bleachers at the south end of the field, upgrading to LED lighting and extending the end zone net for lacrosse. Construction is planned for summer 2021.

Upgrades at the Hartman Field Baseball Complex include installing artificial turf on the varsity field; upgrading to LED lights; renovating the varsity field press box and dugouts; adding dugouts and installing permanent bleachers and a press box at

the junior varsity field; reconfiguring the entrance and adding parking spaces. Construction is expected to occur between June and October 2021.

Other CHS projects

Additional projects at CHS include a new 84-space parking lot off of the school’s main drive just south of Smoky Row Road; improvements to the culinary arts classroom; upgrading parking lot lights to LED; replacing seats in the planetarium; and replacing chillers and boilers.

Upgrades at other facilities Several projects are planned at sites other than CHS, including reconfiguring the north parking lot and renovating the running track at Carmel Middle School; renovating the running track at Clay Middle school; replacing the lobby skylight at Forest Dale Elementary; installing a rubber safety surface at the Towne Meadow Elementary playground; replacement of the heating, cooling and ventilation system at the Carmel Life and Learning Center; improvements at the transportation facility; and update of the temperature control system at several buildings.

These projects are expected to total more than $3 million. The projects at the elementary and middle schools are expected to be completed during the 2021 summer break, with the other projects completed by mid-2022.

Can’t or won’t?

Pandemic has silver linings

Commentary by Terry Anker Even as spring cleaning is well underway across this land of ours, so is the perennial challenge of how to adequately find equilibrium in the household division of labor. Laundry, lawn mowing, spider killing, meal preparation, planting and maintaining flowers, child care, earning a living to pay for it all and countless other chores befall us. We prioritize their importance, and our desire to do them, and plod along endeavoring to keep our lives moving in working order and, hopefully, improving.

For some of us living alone, we are singularly responsible. But for many residing as families, each does a bit of every task. Mom works and so does Dad. Dad cooks and so does Mom. And for others, the labor is split along traditional ethnic or gender lines, by aptitude, by physical presence or by interest.

We settle into our duties comfortably, occasionally checking to ensure that we are maintaining parity with our co-inhabitants. Is anyone doing too much or too little? For most, a good-natured equipoise is found. And if someone’s not pulling their weight, a bit of prodding will suffice.

Alas, as with all human endeavor, some of us will seek to game the system. Advice is often shared, a few drinks in, at the bachelor/bachelorette party, such as, “Don’t let your partner know of your laundry acumen, lest you become the household expert — for life!

They suggest, choose those things you want to do and feign incompetence for the rest. The occasional red sweater thrown in with a load of whites not only produces pink sheets but also becomes an antidote for ever having to do the laundry again.

Serious questions about spousal manipulation aside, how much of our lives do we spend imitating ineptitude? How many of our claims of “cannot” are really that we “will not?”

Nothing to complain about Commentary by Danielle Wilson Current management recently joked that they missed the good old days when readers would complain about my HUMOR column. Alas, with kids mostly grown and out of the house, a job and husband I adore, and an almost total boycott of news outlets, I simply have less opportunity to make bad parenting decisions, judge other soccer moms and care about life as we know it. I also think I’ve become more patient as I approach 50 and understand that on certain things, what I say won’t make a hill-of-beans difference, anyway.

So, yes, I could regale you with my thoughts on Stepford women who relish shaming anyone who’s not breastfeeding, staying at home or cooking only organic food (guilty on all three counts!). Or even better, I could discuss my views on the religious folks who like to badmouth those of us who don’t go to church every Sunday or participate in “small group.” But now that

I’m older and infinitely wiser, I realize supermoms are merely compensating for their own insecurities about motherhood and the devout are just trying to keep me from going to hell.

Of course, if I wanted to really stir the pot, I could go on and on about the nightmare of a president we have, but what good would it do? His supporters are still going to vote for him in November and I’m still going to experience intense stomach pains when I accidentally hear about his latest idiotic tweet (Obama 2020?).

See how much I’ve grown through the years? PTO volunterrorists, anti-vaxxers, global warming deniers ... you do you, people. I’m not one to comment.

Editor, The COVID-19 pandemic that has shuttered much of the state is a dark cloud hanging over 2020, but it has some silver linings. One positive aspect of our plague is that traffic is light.

More families are enjoying simple outdoor activities like walking and cycling.

As a cyclist, I see lots of families waiting their turns to cross roundabouts on foot or on their bikes. I see adult cyclists taking mid-day opportunities to break from work and enjoy workout rides. I see many more fellow cyclists on the quiet roads outside urban areas this year than I have in years past.

While I’m a cyclist, I also like fast cars. Because I enjoy driving, I’m often tempted to press my gas pedal just a little harder than I should through roundabouts. Roundabouts are fun.

But I must bear in mind: kids don’t have sports activities, moms and dads are stir crazy and indoor gyms are closed.

We are going to see many people walking and riding bikes this summer.

These families may be waiting on the far ends of the roundabouts we approach.

Join me: Slow down and drive alertly.

Remember to stay off your phones, too.

Personal responsibility needed to defeat virus threat Editor, There are lots of conflicting reports and advice from experts in the media about COVID-19, so how should Hoosiers properly respond?

State governments took the lead with various levels of “shutdown.” They tried to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed by COVID patient admissions at any given point. It may have worked, but this strategy also extended the length of time the virus spreads. In doing so, state governments basically took the responsibility away from us. Now, as restrictions are relaxed, it’s time for us to take back that responsibility for our

community’s sake.

Random sampling across Indiana implies that the probability of death is about one-half of 1 percent (.0058).

Given that 70 percent of 6.6 million Hoosiers must be exposed to the virus to achieve herd immunity, and given the probability of death, we could potentially lose some 27,000 souls. So far, 1,716 persons have died in the state.

Meanwhile, numerous people appear to believe the virus is no longer a threat simply because we are opening up more businesses and activities. While opening back up is the correct thing to do, it’s up to all of us to remain personally vigilant about protecting

vulnerable Hoosiers wherever appropriate. We know who they are. As of May 20, 91 percent of the Indiana COVID deaths were people age 60 and older, some 80 percent of whom had at least one form of comorbidity.

As we begin to work and play again, we are still potentially passing the virus to one another — especially in crowded, indoor locations. It’s up to each of us to take proper precautions now. If we don’t, we could end up enduring tougher restrictions and even greater economic consequences.

Inside the IEDC’s race to secure PPE for the state

By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com In mid-March, state officials retooled agencies to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 20, the PANDEMIC Indiana Economic Development Corp. was tasked with procuring as much personal protective equipment, or PPE, as possible for the state.

After the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, the world watched as PPE — respirator masks, gowns, face shields and other items — became Paglia scarce. Shipments from the world’s largest supplier, China, stagnated, and the U.S.’s national stockpile was depleted in the first weeks of the pandemic, leaving state governments scrambling to supply their hospital systems and health care workers with PPE. “When the pandemic began the governor’s office had asked us to take the lead on dealing with private-sector companies that wanted to help out during COVID-19,” said, Luke Bosso, the IEDC’s chief of staff.

Since March 20, Bosso, 35, an Indianapolis resident, has driven to his office, even though many municipalities and businesses were, or still are, temporarily closed. He still wears a suit, but for comfort, he has traded his dress shoes for a pair of Allbirds and ditched ties because, he said, “Ties carry germs.”

Bosso arrives at his office each day about 10 minutes earlier than pre-pandemic days because traffic has thinned. His phone begins to ring each day at about 7:45 a.m., which reminds him how many people have acquired his cell phone number during the pandemic.

“The phone never stops ringing,” Bosso said. “The emails never stop. It’s amazing how many people are emailing about this.”

Within the first handful of phone calls he made in March, Bosso said he realized the IEDC’s role during the crisis would have to change.

“It became clear it was probably more important for the (Indiana State Dept. of Health) and the Dept. of Homeland Security to worry more about the crisis (and) worry more about the operations than it was for them to start vetting companies and whether or not they were able to provide good

PPE,” Bosso.

In March, the IEDC tasked employees with vetting potential vendors of PPE. It has since established a multitiered system to secure PPE as fast as possible while also verifying the integrity of the vendors it orders from.

The process begins with phone calls. If the corporation feels confidant the vendor is a legitimate source, other calls are scheduled to start the procurement processes.

“Usually, I come in during the end of the second or third call,” Bosso said. “I’ll deal with a business or a person and execute the order based on Bosso feedback we’ve heard.”

Bosso often texts the IEDC’s chief administrative officer, Robert Paglia, 44, who now wears a uniform of revolving T-shirts and sweatpants as he works from his home in Marion County. Paglia is one of many other IEDC officials who work in the multitiered system.

Paglia helps vet companies with Bosso while managing schedules and finances. He also has helped develop a template of questions for other employees to ask vendors during initial calls and tracks the corporation’s overall procurement activity.

“Most of the folks that we’re interacting with are not typical vendors of the state, certainly not of the IEDC,” Paglia said, noting that the IEDC has worked with the state auditor to help vendors set up within 24 hours.

Bosso said he contacts vendors on an almost daily basis to keep up with demand.

If he’s notified of, say, a shipment of 4,000 protective gowns that are ready to be delivered, he immediately contacts the vendor to see if 4,000 more can be ordered.

“You want to talk to the people you’re buying from,” Bosso said. “I tell people all the time (that) a thing I’ve learned during this is, if a deal was bad before COVID-19, then it’s bad now. Unless you’re talking directly to a manufacturer and getting some type of assurance that it’s a real deal, (then you don’t know) that it’s not some type of scam, that you actually are buying from the factory.”

As of May 22, the IEDC had received more than 14 million PPE items from the private sector. In total, it had commitments for more than 18 million items.

Her 2-year-old son, Ferris, AUTHOR was conceived through in vitro fertilization.

“There are no IVF books written from a child’s perspective, so I went ahead and created the book series,” said Kossow, who recently moved to Carmel from Chicago.

“There are stories for children about infertility, but it’s not as if they were telling the story. I wanted Ferris to have a story to let him know how he came to be. I wanted it to be at a child’s level that explained a difficult subject in ways they could understand and visualize. There was nothing like that on the market.”

Her first children’s book was “I’m Very Ferris” and was published in January 2019.

The second book, “I’m Very Ferris Takes a Bubble Bath,” was published in April.

Kossow, 37, said the idea is to take children back to what IVF is through their eyes.

Kossow said she is letting the market determine how many books she writes.

“My goal is to continue the series as long as there is a need for it and want for it,” said Kossow, who has some ideas for a third book but hasn’t started writing it.

Kossow, who got married in 2014, had difficulty conceiving and suffered a miscarriage before turning to IVF. “With our last embryo, we were able to conceive our son,” she said. “Ferris means best choice, and he was our last embryo. It also means rock, and he is the rock of our relationship, so we like the uniqueness of the name.”

Carmel man beats disease that strongly resembles COVID-19

Larry Schultz was rushed to the hospital April 3 after shortness of breath quickly advanced to respiratory HOSPITALS failure.

As the COVID-19 pandemic neared a peak in Indiana, Schultz, 76, went into a coma and was placed on a ventilator that would help him take the breaths his lungs were too weak to do on their own.

The Carmel resident developed severe pneumonia, and at times during his monthlong stay at IU Health North hospital, his family wondered if he’d survive.

Schultz had many of the key indicators of COVID-19, the viral disease many other patients battled nearby in the same hospital.

His family was certain he had it, too, but much to their surprise tests for the disease came back negative — three times.

“The weird thing was he had the exact same symptoms as COVID at the exact same time everybody is rushing to the hospital with this,” said Susan Schultz, Larry’s wife.

“We were not convinced, even after the third test. I was like, ‘No, I still believe it’s COVID.’” Doctors eventually diagnosed Larry with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, meaning its origin couldn’t be determined. IU Health North ICU medical director William Harvey, a pulmonologist who led Larry’s care team, said during normal circumstances it’s only seen there three or four times a year.

Like a roller coaster For Larry, a retired electrician, the trouble began shortly after a trip to Chicago. He and Susan had been self-quarantining for nearly two weeks when Larry started experiencing shortness of breath and malaise.

By the time Larry got to his doctor’s office, he was in such bad shape that he was rushed to the emergency room.

Doctors were puzzled by his condition and brought in a team of experts.

“It was like being on a roller coaster every day,” Susan said.

Larry’s medical team set up video calls with the family, who was unable to be with him because of the hospital’s policy to not allow visitors during the pandemic.

Dangers of delay Larry finally got to see his family again on May 5 when he was released from the hospital.

nurse him back to health is still working through a pandemic and treating other emergencies. Harvey said he’s seen a few cases of patients delaying treatment for emergencies unrelated to COVID-19 because they are worried about contracting the disease in the hospital, but he urges those who need treatment to get it.

He pointed to Larry’s case as a good example of why fears of contracting COVID-19 by seeking medical treatment are largely unfounded.

“He was in our hospital for a month, and we didn’t infect him by accident,” Harvey said. “As far as I know, no (health care workers) in our ICU have been infected with COVID.” Read the full story at youarecurrent. com/?p=191243.

‘MY GUARDIAN ANGELS’ After spending more than a month battling severe pneumonia at IU Health North hospital, Larry Schultz thanked his medical team by sending them a video of himself taking his first steps outside.

“I want you to know that you are not my heroes, you are my lifesavers,” Schultz said in the video.

Hillary Halperin, Larry’s daughter, said the nurses told her they cried with joy as they watched it. She is thankful for the level of care they gave her father.

“When we cannot be there holding our loved ones’ hands, to have them doing it for us is exceptional,” she said.

Cosner releases 1st songs from planned album

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Jeremiah Cosner had big plans for releasing a single, his album and supporting it with performances this year.

Unfortunately, those plans were slowed by the coronavirus MUSIC pandemic.

The Carmel singer/songwriter did release his first single, “Home,” in April from a planned 15-song album. His second single, “Recovery,” was released May 25.

“I’m going to release the whole album by the end of the year,” Cosner said. “I’ve got a couple record labels I’m looking at. It’s just about connecting the dots. I could be out playing relentless shows trying to push this album, but that doesn’t look that will be the easiest plan of attack. The ultimate goal is to get back out there and support it organically. I can’t wait for venues to open back up.”

Cosner planned to release the album in 2020, but it might not be until the end of the year or 2021.

The song “Home” is about being on the road.

“And 1 million and one things keeping you from being home,” Cosner said.

“I think it’s something we can all relate to on every scale, trying to make ends meet and make a living. For artists, home is a place to relax, a place to create and a place to reboot and recharge your engines. I think when we hear the word home, we think of a childhood memory or a current situation.”

Technology can play a role in moving music forward.

“But for those of us who do get our kicks from performing live and engaging with other musicians and people with like mentalities, that’s really the passion why we all do it,” said Cosner, whose last performance was at the Burnside Inn on Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis in December 2019.

Cosner said he has an arsenal of more than 75 original songs. Many are on iTunes.

Cosner released an album, “Hold Steady,” in Nashville, Tenn., in 2010. He recorded it at the Sound Kitchen studio.

“Since then I decided to learn every instrument. I bought a bass, bought a drum and built a home studio in Carmel,” he said. “I decided to do it all on my own. The process of going to Nashville is so fast. You record a record in two days because everyone has their own agenda. As a singer/songwriter, you wish you could go back and do this and that. I learned a lot. So, 10 years later, I’m playing every instrument and recording everything.”

Cosner describes his music as a triple-blend of folk-rock, country and Americana.

The 2002 Center Grove High School graduate earned a telecommunications degree from Indiana University in 2007. He also took classes at the Jacobs School of Music.

“Early on, music was my only way of making a living,” Cosner said.

Now, Cosner is a brand liquor ambassador for Sazerac Products.

“Music is what keeps me ticking,” said Cosner, who lives with his wife, Alyssa, and daughter, Livi, 12.

Beef & Boards prepares for reopening

After suspending PERFORMANCE performances in mid-March because of gathering restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, Beef & Boards plans to present “Beehive: The 60s Musical” July 8 to Aug. 9.

“The entire staff has Stark this cooped-up creative energy,” Beef & Boards owner Doug Stark said. “We’ve got to get back to singing and dancing and entertaining.”

Stark said the reopening will be dependent on getting the green light from the guidelines by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.

Beef & Boards has several safety measures planned.

“I have always been a big fan of adapting best practices, adding a few of our own ideas and always try to follow (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines,” Stark said.

Stark said Beef & Boards has installed UV lighting inside its air handlers to kill any viruses in the air. He said it will filter the air inside with an industrial high-efficiency particulate air filter between shows. Stations with hand sanitizer will be available immediately upon entering.

The most noticeable change is Beef & Boards will not have its customary buffet but will deliver food to the table by wait staff wearing protective gear.

“It’s totally new and uncharted territory for us,” Stark said. “We meet every week to review the new protocols. I know we will have some customers who will miss our buffet; however, we found it will be the safest environment for both our staff and customers to serve plated food.”

Capacity will be limited to 250 people.

Normal capacity is between 425 to 450.

There will be a greater distance between tables.

Fishers District mural installed

Fishers District is at 116th Street and IKEA Way. The first mural was painted by Nekoda Witsken, a Fishers resident and a Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate. The mural is at the Verizon Wireless store off IKEA Way and will measure 35 by 9 feet. It’s a bold, colorful design featuring the words “Thanks for Being Weird with Me.” “I grew up in the HSE Schools system, and one main thing about the community that stuck with me is it helped me feel vibrant and spirited and be who I am and embrace eccentricities to come together and make this whole being an artist thing a reality,” Witsken said. “The flower is symbolic of growing through the process, and sunflowers follow the sun with their face, and it’s an entrepreneurial idea – to pivot to what’s happening around you, so I threw it

all together in a wacky, technicolor mural.”

Each of the murals must represent the City of Fishers’ theme of being a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial city.

Although the project began last year as Thompson Thrift Retail Group began working with Nickel Plate Arts and the Fishers Arts and Cultural Commission to select artists, the installation was pushed to 2020.

Future murals will feature artwork by Dan Toro, from Laramie, Wyo., Megan Jefferson, Indianapolis and Travis Neal, Indianapolis.

Kelly Frank has always been a huge fan of 1980s Christian rock hair bands.

So the Fishers musician MUSIC and his son, Travis Frank, who now lives in Los Angeles, were thrilled to perform as an opening act when bands Stryper, Petra and Whitecross performed in Rocktoberfest Oct. 29, 2016, at Old National Centre in Indianapolis.

That led to more collaboration with some members of those bands, including Petra lead singer John Schlitt. Frank and his son formed a band, Holy Fire. The band released its first single, “Fool Runnin,” in April, which Frank wrote.

“I’m hoping to do a complete album, but it’s taken us a year to get the first song on,” Frank said. “Depending what happens in the next couple months will determine if we ever get a whole album out. For us to continue to record, we’re going to have to go back to Tennessee to finish the rest of the songs.”

Frank said the band intends to make a video, but those plans have been delayed by

the coronavirus pandemic. Frank said some songs are already written but the band needs time in the studio.

“I’m taking things one at a time, but it’s good to have something released,” Frank said. “I’m pleased with it and I’m ready to do another one.”

John Schlitt sings the lead on “Fool Runnin” and John Lawry plays keyboards and produced the song. Frank and his son sing backup vocals. Lawry is a keyboardist for Petra. Travis Frank and Rex Carroll, who played for Christian rock group Whitecross, play guitar. Bryan Cooley plays bass guitar.

Petra drummer Louie Weaver was primarily used on that song, but Frank said the band uses other drummers. Jason Siefert plays guitar and handles publicity for Holy Fire.

Frank said Holy Fire is ready to do a show, but all the members have their own solo projects.

Schlitt, 70, released a 10-song solo album called “Go” earlier this year. Prior to joining Petra, Schlitt was the lead singer for the rock band Head East, best known for the hit “Never Been Any Reason.”

“I want to help John get out and promote his new album,” Frank said. “Stryper is releasing a new album this year. I just love the Christian rock music and sharing with the groups out there hammering away, sharing the gospel and their message.”

Frank said he is looking for a venue where the band can perform a Holy Fire show with Stryper or Petra.

Frank said he would like to hold regular shows at a venue, perhaps a church, with central Indiana Christian musicians.
