Man sentenced for hate crime

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The man who admitted to painting Nazi symbols and setting a fire at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Carmel was sentenced COURTS May 20 to three years in prison.

Nolan Brewer, 21, of Eminence, Ind., pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime for the July 28, 2018, incident. His wife, a minor, also was arrested for her role. The FBI and Carmel Police Dept. worked together to investigate the case.

Brewer told FBI investigators he targeted the synagogue — which was more than 50 miles from his home — because it was “full of ethnic Jews.” Surveillance footage showed Brewer and his wife went to Walmart the day before the attack to buy red and black spray paint, Gatorade bottles and other items used to deface a dumpster enclosure and make homemade explosives.

Investigators said Brewer and his wife parked more than a mile from the synagogue to avoid detection. They walked to the synagogue, carrying their supplies in a backpack and by hand. Their original plan was to break into the synagogue and set it on fire, but a witness said they were spooked by the surveil-

lance system and decided not to enter.

When the FBI arrested Brewer two weeks after the incident, he still had supplies for the attack in the trunk of his car. A friend of Brewer and his wife told investigators the couple said they wanted to burn down the rabbi’s house and were searching for other targets.

Some of Brewer’s co-workers testified that he openly supported Nazism at work and bragged about the attack after it happened.

After reviewing the evidence, U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt sentenced Brewer and imposed a $1,000 fine. She also ordered him to pay the synagogue $700.

The Carmel City Council may soon ban the use of e-cigarettes in public places.

The council reviewed the CITY NEWS issue during its May 20 meeting at the request of Carmel Police Dept. School Resource Officer Shane VanNatter, who noted that because city code does not address e-cigarettes, officers’ options are limited when responding to the more than 1,000 Carmel High School students who are 18 or older and legally allowed to possess and use vaping devices.

CHS bans the use of vaping devices on campus by all students, but VanNatter said CPD will be better able to crack down on the issue if the city tightens its ordinance.

“Mom and dad don’t care too much when their kid does after-school detention,” VanNatter said. “They do care when they have to go to court or their kid is in court.”

City code bans smoking in public facilities and businesses. Proposed amendments would add e-cigarettes to the ban and specifically list schools as places where they are prohibited.

Violators may be fined up to $50 for a first of-

fense and up to $500 for subsequent offenses.

The number of students vaping has rapidly increased locally and nationally in recent years. VanNatter wrote his first citation for e-cigarette use at CHS in 2014, and this school year he’s already written at least 25.

According to the FDA, vaping among high school students rose 78 percent from 2017 to 2018. In Indiana, nearly 30 percent of high school seniors reported vaping monthly in 2018, according to the Indiana Prevention Resource Center. The figure is more than a 10 percent jump from 2017.

Some students are using the devices to vape THC, the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant that leads to feeling high. VanNatter said THC oils are typically much more potent than smoking marijuana, and that he’s seen more than a dozen cases this school year of Carmel students “very, very impaired” after ingesting them. He said it has led to four Carmel students being taken to the hospital this year.

“When we let our kids vape nicotine, it’s not just harmless,” he said. “It leads to the next level.”

The council’s finance committee plans to discuss the issue at 5:30 p.m. May 28.

Carmel’s Steinbrenner tastes success early

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The first IndyCar season for team co-owner George Michael Steinbrenner IV and driver Colton Herta is exceeding INDY 500 expectations so far.

“We knew from the very start through all of testing we had the speed to compete, but in IndyCar it takes a lot of perfect execution and sometimes a little bit of luck to finish in first,” said Steinbrenner, a Carmel resident of three years.

“We were able to do that in Austin (winning a March race in Texas). It came much earlier than expected.

“Now, our goal is to consistently execute.

We want to try to run up front as much as possible.”

Herta will start in the middle of Row 2 for the Indianapolis 500 May 26 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Herta, whose father, Bryan, was a five-time Indy 500 starter, had a qualifying run of 229.086 mph in the Harding Steinbrenner Honda. Herta is 13th in the IndyCar point standings.

“Our mindset right now is still to get as much experience under our belt as possible, not to overreach in our expectations,” Steinbrenner said. “We know we have speed in

the driver and car.”

Steinbrenner and Mike Harding, who owns an Indianapolis asphalt paving company, joined forces in the offseason. Harding’s IndyCar racing team ran three races in 2017 and a full season in 2018.

“He was looking to freshen up the team and bring in Colton and Steinbrenner Racing to accomplish that goal, and it’s worked pretty well for everyone,” Steinbrenner said.

“We have a lot of experience on this team and a lot of guys that have been around for a long time. They’re excited by a fast driver and a fast car. To see a young kid lighting

the world on fire, it makes them motivated and they want to succeed as much as Colton does.”

Steinbrenner, who turns 23 next month, has known Herta, 19, since the driver was 12.

“After two years in the Indy Lights program, we felt he was ready as a team to make the jump,” Steinbrenner said.

“He’s mature for his age,” Harding said of Steinbrenner. “He’s learning. I’m handling most of the business operations. He’s helping on the sales and learning the business.”

Of course, Steinbrenner has been around sports his entire life.

Steinbrenner’s late grandfather, George Michael Steinbrenner III, purchased the New York Yankees in 1973. Steinbrenner’s father, Hank, is part-owner and his uncle, Hal, is the managing partner of the Yankees.

Steinbrenner said he’s not a natural salesman in terms of his demeanor.

“But the strategy that goes into not only the on-track performance but the strategy that goes into sales and marketing, that’s what has interested me the most,” Steinbrenner said. “The nitty-gritty of getting deals done is what has been really entertaining to me.”

Across the city, hundreds of trees were uprooted and branches broken causing widespread power outages.

This served as a reminder for cities and towns to be prepared to adequately respond to disasters and have systems in place to continue to provide residents and businesses with basic services. While many of our residents found out just how quickly they could lose access to electricity, they may not realize how diligently the city plans to make sure that even if power is cut off, the city is still able to provide services. We have propane-powered generators to pump water into our water towers, which then allows gravity to keep pressure in the water lines.

This is critical not just to provide water service to homes but to keep pressure available to fight fires. At one point during last

week’s storm our firefighters were battling six different fires. Temporary generators work short-term, but what if we lost access to power for a longer period of time?

For the past year, the City of Carmel has been working with Telamon Corporation to develop a system of solar panels at various locations around the city near its facilities.

During this time, the battery storage in this solar system has been improved to the point that we can store enough energy to power critical utility systems in the event of a disaster that takes out power for an extended period of time.

The project is costing $3.2 million for the first four locations, but when you consider the total amount of damage that could occur to our systems under an extended power outage, this is a minimal amount of debt to ensure our safety and well-being.

While preparing for CarmelFest, CFD is in the process of fundraising to fully restore Engine 1, a 1960 Ford C850 firetruck that was retrieved from a salvage yard in June 2017.

Extreme KidsZone to debut

By Grace Xu • news@currentincarmel.com CarmelFest visitors will notice several changes at this year’s event. Ride tickets will be available once again in CARMELFEST addition to the wristbands implemented last year, and the new Extreme KidsZone will open.

ExtremeZone, originally geared toward teens, and KidsZone have merged to create a one-stop shop for families with children of all ages. Will Weprich, zone chair, said the two areas were too widely separated, so the merger will give parents the ability to stay by their children’s side. The new area also will feature more rides.

Ride tickets are returning this year, adding to the wristband-only system from 2018. Individual tickets are $1, with each ride requiring three to five tickets. For every online purchase of 15 tickets, guests receive two bonus tickets.

For $25, guests can purchase wristbands for unlimited rides July 3 and 4, except for the new video game tent, which requires a purchase of five tickets to enter.

Carmel resident recounts tale of World War II survival, heroism

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com At 94, most of Gerald Mansbach’s World War II memories are crystal clear.

It’s a bit surprising, because he COVER STORY couldn’t even remember his own name for several months after being blown out of a Sherman tank on Jan. 25, 1945.

The Barrington of Carmel resident, who served as a sergeant and tank commander in the U.S. Army, has relayed his story to many audiences the last several years.

“Gerald’s speech was one of the most moving speeches I’ve ever heard. It was Mansbach so personal and brought me to tears both times I heard his speech,” Barrington resident Claire Campbell said. “I was a kid during World War II, so to hear him speak about it was very moving. It’s amazing that at (his age), he still remembered all the places and dates in which things occurred.”

In 2013, Mansbach was awarded the prestigious French Legion of Honor. The honor was originally created by Napoleon Bonaparte. Mansbach’s other military honors include a Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star.

way back from the town, the lead Jeep was blown up by the Germans at the same crossroad.

“We’re a sitting duck. We couldn’t move,” Mansbach said.

“I thought ‘I got to order abandon,’ but just as I did that I heard screaming from where the first Jeep was, so I told our men to keep firing where we thought the gun was and I ran to the Jeep, which was on fire. Two were dead and two were not. It was snowing and icy. I grabbed one guy by the ankles and pulled him back behind the tank, then I went to get the second guy and pulled him back.”

Mansbach got back in the tank and began firing his machine gun. He then noticed he wasn’t getting any returning fire.

“Just then a round comes right through, a direct hit, and blew up our magazine and killed everybody except me,”

An ambulance arrived to pick up the bodies.

“When they loaded me, I made some kind of noise or movement and they saw I wasn’t dead yet,” Mansbach said.

“They strapped me on the hood of the Jeep and ran me back to the aid station.”

By the time he got to a fourth aid station, he had regained some consciousness.

“I didn’t remember what I was doing there or who I was — nothing,” he said.

The aftermath

A fateful day

Mansbach, originally from Fort Wayne, was drafted in December 1942 after one semester at Indiana University.

During training, he was put in the armored division and assigned as a gunner. He was later elevated from gunner to tank commander by necessity.

“Our tank commander got killed when he was hit by a sniper in a supposedly safe area,” Mansbach said.

That incident happened in November 1944 near Metz, France.

Mansbach’s Fourth Armored Division was part of Gen. George S. Patton’s Third Army. Mansbach’s tank division had just done its part in holding off the German offensive in the Battle of the Bulge. On a fateful January 1945 day, Mansbach was ordered to surveil and report on a German city.

“I noticed there was a crossroad in front of the village,” Mansbach said. “My experience told me Germans love to zero in on crossroads.”

Mansbach said. “I was up in the turret and those guys were in the tank. It blew me out of the turret.”

Mansbach landed approximately 5 yards away. His four crew members were killed and the explosion also killed the two men behind the tank Mansbach had tried to save.

The trailing Jeep’s soldiers thought Mansbach was dead as well and went to get help to retrieve the bodies.

“My uniform was ripped to shreds. I was completely unconscious, and nearly every bone in my body was injured or broken,” said Mansbach, who carried no identification.

The Army took Mansbach to a Paris hospital and then a second one, which had a psychiatric staff that could deal with his memory loss.

“After four months, I knew enough about myself to be sent to another hospital in England,” he said. “When they found out enough about me, they called my parents because I was MIA.” He went to two more hospitals when he was sent back to the U.S. before receiving his medical discharge.

Mansbach went on to graduate from the University of Illinois. He retired after 40 years as a money manager with Merrill Lynch in Fort Wayne. His first wife died in 1993. He has two sons and two daughters.

He married his second wife, Shirley, in 1994 and lived on the north side of Indianapolis. They later moved to Carmel.

Like many World War II veterans, Mansbach didn’t talk about the war for years.

“I had survivor’s guilt for years and years,” he said. “I never told anyone about it because I felt it was my fault because I was in command.”

Commentary by Terry Anker Why is it that certain things seem to disproportionately upset us? Little annoying matters, like getting the wrong order at the drive-thru or that person driving the car in front of us who stops without warning before entering a roundabout, seem to have the magic power to ruin our morning, day, or even week.

Maybe we are just being empathetic. If others were showing signs of fear, would we suddenly be afraid? If they were laughing, would we find ourselves doing the same?

If so, is it such a surprise that we’d likewise reflect the unfriendliness of others? Still, many infractions delivering the most egregious irritation are blithely inert. The perpetrator has no idea that they are disturbing us or, sigh, even that we exist. It might be exactly that final element, that they are indifferent to our presence, which brings the most acute retribution from us.

How can they fail to acknowledge us? We are good people. We have had a tough day. Who do they think they are? We’ve waited our turn.

We’ve followed the rules! They are terrible people!

In a swelling torrent, indignation transforms into rage. It follows that our sense of self is too quickly transferred to others. As such, the slightest transgression elicits wrath.

Is it possible, just possible, that we are simply turning an inconvenience into a problem? The moment required to comply with the officious TSA airport gorilla is inconsequential to the hours spent once they put us on the do-not-fly list. The tiresomeness of stopping behind the school bus pales to the shame of hitting a child while we are self-absorbed with our own tribulations. Isn’t life complicated enough without turning molehills into mountains?

Dance mom days revival Commentary by Danielle Wilson Friends, I have so much to share this week I don’t even know where to start. The storm that took out two of our trees and left baby raccoons stranded HUMOR in our garage and bathroom wall (another raccoon story!)?

The Mother’s Day debacle that caused me to seriously question the way I’ve raised my little angels (not one card, flower or cleaned dish!)? Or the fact that I am hosting a graduation party this Thursday and never sent out invitations (although I did order a cake!)?

Worthy fodder, for sure. But honestly, all of these pale in comparison to this little tidbit: My daughter is returning to competitive dance! After a year-long hiatus, she has decided to unearth her jazz shoes and give it another go. The best part? I will be a dance mom again! And I’m not being facetious. I’m only somewhat ashamed to say that I truly missed living vicariously through my tiny dancer and could not be more thrilled to be

headed back into the fray of sequined booty shorts, dressing-room drama and considerable financial strain.

That still sounds snarky, but I’m speaking my truth! During her five years of competition dance, I got to know the other moms fairly well, and relying on Facebook to share in their experiences was tougher than I imagined it would be. So, when my daughter expressed similar feelings a few months back, I secretly hoped she’d change her mind. And she did!

We have until the fall before life becomes exciting again, but rest assured, friends, great stories are on the horizon (presumably without villainous raccoons and degenerate offspring)!

Editor, Regarding James Smith’s (May 14) letter about the importance of Carmel remaining conservative, his comparison of Carmel to cities like Newark, Buffalo, Camden, etc., is simply ridiculous. Carmel is young and suburban, has a relatively wealthy and well-educated population, never had any Rust Belt industry, has newer infrastructure and has minimal legacy costs for public pensions.

To suggest that the complex problems faced by these older, often Rust Belt cities are due solely to one political party is disingenuous (that’s a 25 cent word for “lying”).

Allowing this kind of “sound bite” passing for “logic” is dangerous when people swallow it without applying critical thinking.

Speaking as a fiscal conservative, we do need a wider diversity of viewpoints in our government.

From a social justice perspective, the need to encourage and respect the opinions of others is clear. One way to do that is to have some Democratic candidates so that the November elections matter in Hamilton County.

To think that one party has all the answers is just plain wrong.

Launching Station lands in Carmel

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com When Nathan and Michelle Press opened the Launching Station retail store in Noblesville, their mission was to support veteran-owned businesses.

NEW BIZ Having achieved their objective in less than a year, the husband and wife team has opened a second Launching Station — this one at Clay Terrace in Carmel — with the same mission.

“Our primary goal is to encourage and promote veteranowned businesses,” said Nathan Press, a U.S. Army Reservist. “Our mission is to celebrate and bring attention to as many of these companies as possible by selling their merchandise.”

Specializing in items such as coffee, shirts, sweatshirts, women’s purses and bar items such as bottle openers and shot glasses, Launching Station opened in Clay Terrace May 18, joining other specialty retailers such as Purse Strings of Carmel, Artful Living and Pandora.

With a few exceptions, the new Launching Station will mirror the store at Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville, which opened in September 2018.

“For the most part, the two will be much the same, other than aesthetics,” said Nathan Press, who recently marked his 17th year of Army service, including 13 years of active duty. “Our inventory will be quite similar but there will be some variance in items. It will give us a chance to carry a greater inventory, test different products and increase the total brands we carry.”

Upon opening the first Launching Station, the Presses had immediate plans to expand. For a host of reasons, they identified Clay Terrace as an ideal destination for a second store.

“Clay Terrace provides a centric location for Hamilton County as well as northern Marion County,” Nathan Press said. “Hamilton County has nearly 14,000 veterans, along with countless family members and friends. As Hamilton County residents, it’s also attractive to be in our own community. There is a great variety of store options at Clay Terrace (but) none like ours.”

Commentary by Kari Berger After a recent visit to the doctor’s office, a bill arrives in the mail for several hundred dollars. What went wrong INSURANCE with the insurance? Administrative errors can bring patients unnecessary invoices that are easily corrected.

Insurance companies send out an explanation of benefits before the bill comes.

Save this document at least four months in case the provider bills for a service that insurance already paid in full.

Sometimes, a bill will arrive that never passed across an insurance company’s desk. This mistake occurs when providers use a separate laboratory that doesn’t have insurance information on file. The lab believes the patient is paying for the test.

Call the lab’s billing office and ask if there is any insurance policy listed on the account.

Provide the insurance policy number and ask the lab to resubmit the claim.

If insurance denied payment, ask for the denial reason. An insurance company may believe their own policy is secondary to another policy, especially if a patient has recently lost coverage from an employer and uses Medicare or a spouse’s insurance.

Call the insurance company and update the coordination of benefits, which establishes

the order that insurance policies will pay on claims, e.g. union policy pays first, and Medicare pays the remainder.

There may still be a charge after the claim is processed by insurance. It is always in the provider’s best interest to work with patients rather than pay a collection agency to go after the money. Many hospitals have financial assistance for patients, who usually provide proof of income and assets. Billing offices can create a budgetfriendly payment plan. Regular payments protect credit scores and keep away collection agencies.

Always ask if the provider is in-network before scheduling an appointment. Before having a procedure done, ask for a quote to limit post-visit surprises. Understand the insurance policy’s benefits and know how much money may ultimately be the patient’s responsibility in a calendar year. Provide updated insurance information to doctors and specialists.

A few common-sense precautions will make medical bills less unexpected.

Artistic director Hancock puts his most personal pieces into one performance

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Gregory Hancock has found a way to connect his three most personal pieces.

“Until There is No More,” DANCE “Every Moment … Every Day” and “The Violin Under the Bed” will be part of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre’s performance at 7 p.m. June 7 and 8 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

This is the second time each piece has been done, but in the past, all were at separate times.

“Every Moment … Every Day,” is about Hancock’s grief over his mother Florence Marie Hancock’s death at age 88 in September 2014. His mother was still working full time at St. Vincent in medical records department.

“Every moment of every day I miss my mom,” said Hancock, executive artistic director of GHDT. “I miss her presence.

People don’t understand grief. They think it’s something you deal with and move on. In the piece, I use a truck loaded with rocks that the dancer drags around, which is the essence of me, (and) carries across the stage. It’s something that is present with you all the time and you learn to deal with. You move forward because you have to. I have to keep doing my work. I have to keep paying my bills. When you lose someone significant like that in your life, you don’t move on from it.

“My mother was way more than my mother. She was my teacher, my spiritual advisor, my business partner, my travel companion. Her absence created such a void, personally and professionally.”

The opening piece, “Until There is No More,” is about Hancock’s battle with kidney cancer in 2014. In August, he will be cancer-free for five years.

“It’s about facing your mortality, your fears, your ills,” said Hancock, whose father, Norman, died when he was a teenager.

The piece about his mother is touching, funny and hopeful, he said.

“It’s more a celebration of her and things she liked,” Hancock said. “She was a great softball player, so there is a softball piece.”

When his mother was young, her large family in Kansas was poor. At 12, she started cleaning houses to help pay bills.

The house owner had a violin under her bed and she told Hancock’s mother not to touch the violin.

“My mother would pull it out under the bed and just look at it and imagined playing it because her family couldn’t afford to give her lessons,” he said. “Many years later, I bought her a violin for Christmas.

She never learned to play it. She tried and stuff, but she put it under her bed. The point was her life had come to the point she could have a violin under her bed.”

Every Day,” she has a scene with fellow company dancer Taylar Green playing Hancock’s spirit.

“It’s a special moment everyone dreams about to be able to feel that person one

last time,” Lessaris said. “Maybe have that closure. I touched Taylar’s shoulder and there is that feeling you are going to be OK. You can do this without me because I’ve prepared you for this.’ ‘Violin Under the Bed’ is more a celebration for the life Florence led. It’s about her meeting Gregory’s father, playing softball, her love of travel.

It’s a bright piece that has beautiful music.

Even if you didn’t know Florence, it’s easy to get lost in the color and music.”

Green can relate to the stories of grief.

“I lost my sister tragically (at age 22) and I still go through these emotions all the time,” Green said. “For me, I am portraying Gregory, but it’s also a journey for me every time.”

Isaac Jones, a dancer with the Dayton Ballot, previously played in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” for GHDT. Jones takes on Hancock’s essence in the opening piece and his father’s spirit in the final piece.

“When you lose somebody, it’s important to remember the beauty and love they brought into life,” Jones said.

Daughter catches acting bug

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Westfield resident Caitlin Stacy figures it’s like mother, like daughter.

“I love dancing PERFORMING ARTS and performing, and I think Allie has gotten that from me,” Stacy said. “She has seen me in shows and said, ‘Mommy, I want to do that.’ So, when I saw the auditions come up for Lulu in ‘Waitress,’ I signed her up.”

Allie, who turned 4 years old May 25, got the part and split the role with Lebanon’s Annderson Goodnight for the touring production, which was held at the Old National Centre in Indianapolis in late April. It was the only role that is cast locally in each city of the touring Broadway show.

Allie had two short little lines to deliver, hugged the character who plays her mother and danced with everyone at the end.

Allie enjoyed performing.

“I like singing and dancing,” Allie said.

At the time Allie was in “Waitress,” Stacy — a 2006 Carmel High School graduate — was playing in Civic Theatre’s “Newsies” at The Tarkington in Carmel.

“It was surreal to see Allie on stage following in my footsteps,” Stacy said. “I couldn’t stop crying and smiling.”

Stacy performed in Junior Civic Theatre during middle school. She performed in the color guard at CHS. She also was a professional in an independent color guard.

“After I had kids, I wanted to get back into (acting),” said Stacy, who also has a 5-year-old daughter, London.

“Newsies” was her fourth Civic show.

Stacy previously was in “Young Frankenstein,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Anything Goes.”

Farmers don’t own market Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I love this time of year for many reasons, but perhaps my favorite thing about early summer is the farmers market.

But today’s big question is: Does “farmers GRAMMAR GUY market” need an apostrophe in it? We have three contending spellings vying for the top spot: farmers market, farmer’s market and farmers’ market. Which is it?

Farmers market is what the AP Stylebook considers a “descriptive phrase” (as opposed to a possessive phrase). In general, the farmers do not own the market, nor does one sole farmer. And, as far as I know, they’re not selling farmers at the market. It’s a market for farmers, not a market that belongs to farmers.

Use an apostrophe when “of” would be an accurate longer form possessive phrase. For example: Newton’s law. This is a law of Newton.

Victoria’s Secret is a secret of, or belonging to, Victoria.

For descriptive phrases, you don’t need an apostrophe when “for” or “by” are accurate longer form phrases. For example: Colts quarterback is a quarterback for the Colts. A teachers college is a college for teachers. In these cases, the plural noun (farmers, Colts or teachers) function as adjectives to describe what kind of market, quarterback, or school you’re discussing.

Now, for some exceptions (because English is fun)! Descriptive phrases such as women’s rugby get an apostrophe because the plural “women” doesn’t end in the letter “s.” Other examples include children’s hospital (the children certainly don’t own the hospital) and men’s restroom.

As long as my local farmers market is always well-stocked with corn-related items, I don’t think I’ll complain if I see a rogue apostrophe on its sign. Besides, apostrophes are just commas giving high fives. I do, however, personally think the term “farmers market” as a descriptive phrase does not require an apostrophe.

Re-igniting the eternal flame Commentary by Don Knebel John F. Kennedy, born 102 years ago May 29, is one of two presidents (William Howard Taft is the other) buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

TRAVEL He is the only president whose grave is marked by a so-called “eternal flame.”

After President Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963, his wife Jacqueline selected his gravesite on a hillside just below Arlington House, which the president had admired just months earlier. The day before the funeral, Mrs. Kennedy asked that the grave be forever marked by a flame like the one at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Engineers hastily connected a tiki torch to a propane tank, concealing the equipment beneath evergreen branches. To accommodate growing crowds, the body of the president was later moved 20 feet downhill and a more permanent flame mechanism installed after cemetery officials concluded that the gravesite was not subject to the rules of Arlington National Cemetery that banned such devices. The

new mechanism was set in a round fieldstone from Cape Cod and included a lighter to reignite the flame whenever it goes out, which it does from time to time, usually because of the wind.

Despite the re-ignition mechanism, the flame has been manually re-lighted on at least three occasions, the first when a group of school children unintentionally doused it with holy water. In 1967, a heavy rain flooded the flame and the re-igniter. In 2013, the re-igniter failed and had to be replaced, requiring the flame to be extinguished after first being used to light a temporary flame nearby.

After her death in 1994, Jacqueline Kennedy was buried beside her husband, joining two of their children who died shortly after birth. Thousands of people still visit their gravesite every year, some attracted by its eternal flame.

The future of breast imaging has arrived at St.Vincent Carmel Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center, as doctors are now able to use a new technology that has a better rate of detecting early breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue than mammography.

Tomosynthesis, like a CT scan, takes images from multiple angles and uses computer processing to create a 3D image that a radiologist can use to look at a breast from various angles.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of having one view, you have a series of slices,â&#x20AC;? says Dr. Janalyn Ferguson, a radiologist at St.Vincent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of like youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at a breast like slices of bread.â&#x20AC;?

Recent studies have shown that tomosynthesis can increase the cancer detection rate by about 20 to 25 percent.

It also decreases the likelihood that patients will be called back for additional imaging, as the limited number of views provided by mammograms can cause normal overlapping tissue to appear cancerous.

With tomosynthesis, doctors can look at about 50 images per breast instead of just a few. It may take a little longer for patients to get results, but physicians believe the many benefits are worth the wait.
