Main Street rezone gets bigger

Back in January and February, the Carmel Plan Commission considered whether to rezone a piece of residential property on Main city Street in the Carmel Arts & Design District into commercial land.

Months after being sent to the Carmel City Council, the proposal is back in the hands of the plan commission, but the proposal has changed.

The commission considered a full rezone of most of the block instead of taking a piecemeal approach and rezoning a few parcels.

A public hearing was scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 19 at city hall.

Originally, Soori Ardalan, owner of nearby Soori Gallery, petitioned for a rezone of land totaling 0.33 acres, at 321 W. Main St., across from the Beauty Lounge. She planned to tear down the existing structure and construct a building similar to the size of the Evan Lurie Building.

The city’s planning department had some concerns about only rezoning the two parcels instead of the entire area, stating, “The department would like to see the entire block rezoned at one time, however, all property owners would not consent to this right now. Over time, we would expect the rest of this block to be rezoned and redeveloped. We are concerned that rezoning this one lot is a piecemeal approach to the redevelopment of this area.”

The plan commission went ahead and recommended the rezone and it was sent to the city council, but there was much debate about

whether proper notice was sent out about the rezone. Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard argued that the matter should be sent back to the plan commission because someone could sue the city if a rezone was passed without sending out letters to the correct homes.

The council voted 6-1 on March 16 to send the matter back to plan commission, with City Council President Rick Sharp casting the lone dissenting vote.

Now, the matter is showing up as full rezone of 12 properties, which Councilor Kevin “Woody” Rider said is the best option for everyone involved.

The proposal would rezone properties in a twoblock area of the Carmel Arts & Design District, generally bound by West Main Street, 4th Avenue S.W., 1st Street S.W. and the Monon Greenway.

Some properties have R-2, B-3 or B-5 zoning classifications but this would make the entire area C-2, which is the zoning classification for the Old Town District businesses. Properties include: 251, 311, 321, 331 West Main Street; 208, 220, 230, 320 1st Street S.W. and 20, 25 3rd Avenue S.W. Since many of these properties are residential homes right now, neighbors expressed concerns about obtrusive businesses opening up next to their houses. Some wondered if their property taxes would go up. Rider said there’s nothing to be worried about and if you want to continue to live in your home you can, you don’t have to turn it into a business. He said the biggest change is that property values will increase, which he said is a good thing.

Turning Point graduates first class

By Sam Elliott • news@currentincarmel.com Pastor David Natali has more than a decade of experience as a student, but his experience as a teacher is just approachreligion ing its second anniversary.

And with that comes the first graduating class, June 7, from his Turning Point School of Ministry. A Carmel native, Natali and his wife, Jessica, planted Turning Point Ministries in Carmel in 2010. In 2013, they developed and began their inaugural School of Ministry classes.

“I graduated from Rhema Bible Training College in Oklahoma about 11 years ago now, but I’ve also taken online courses and basically I’ve done a lot of studying in 12 years,” Natali said. “Thanks to a little bit of permissions from some of the schools around the country and with the studying we’ve done, we developed a brand new program.”

The two-year program features 16 courses – Elementary Principles of Christ, Healing in the Word of God, Church History and Demonology, to name a few – each of which includes four two-hour classes that take place two or three nights per week.

While the school’s first year is more readings-based, year two is designed to hone in

on students’ specific interests within ministry. “(In) the second year, we spend a lot of time with the students to find out exactly what areas they want to go into… . We try to give them the means necessary to begin to accomplish their dreams,” Natali said.

Turning Point School of Ministry’s first group to graduate from its second year includes Jessica Natali as well as David’s brother, Michael Natali and his wife, Bethany.

Local author publishes online

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com It started out as a crazy imagination of what could have happened after an actual event he experienced in Paris. It Books turned into a fiction novel that he self-published through Amazon.

Carmel resident, Pres Maxson – author of “Bender at the Bon Parisien” – said he has been a “lifelong creative.”

The book is aimed toward an adult crowd of recreational readers about an American family spending an all-nighter in a Paris dive bar. The bartender is missing, and left something valuable in the bar, and that is where a mystery aspect comes in.

It began as a project loosely based off Maxson and his wife’s trip to Paris, but quickly became fictional.

“I am creative in any form. I think being a writer or any kind of creative is just in your DNA,” Maxson said. “You can’t explain it, it’s just in you. I’ve always had a creative mind in the sense that I always wanted to try what I see when it comes to creativity.”

Maxson has dabbled in poetry, music and short stories, but wanted to try something big, like a novel. Amazon gave him the directions on self-publishing. “Bender at the Bon

“I think writing is special because it’s a very clear way to express yourself through communication. In terms of art, there’s fewer filters between the author’s brain and the reader,” Maxson said. “It’s not like music that processes notes and sounds at same time or a painting that processes visuals and colors, writing is just the thought laid out … it’s a cerebral medium in my mind.”

Brown’s: Sodas and ’scripts

By Terri Horvath • news@currentincarmel.com Would you like a little cherry in your soda? It was a common question in the days when soft drinks cost a nickel back in the day and the soda fountain was in the local pharmacy. In Carmel, the question was often heard at Brown’s Drug Store, once on the corner of Range Line Road and Main Street. Owner John W. Brown opened his operation in 1938 in this location that had served as a pharmacy since 1865. The pharmacy eventually moved north into the building next-door.

You could frequently see Brown at the soda fountain serving up a string of customers. Through the 1960’s, a soda fountain was a regular fixture in many pharmacies. In fact many, like Brown’s Drug Store, expanded their menus and served as lunch counters. For a while, Brown’s was one of the few places you could order food downtown.

The age of the soda fountain slowly dissipated, however, due to a variety of factors.

One of the primary reasons was the growing popularity of the self-service vending machines selling soft drinks in cans. The laborintensive soda fountain proved too expensive to compete.

Indy Film Fest’s “Bigger Portrait Show” was in full force this month and it was wall to wall with people and artwork!

The Indy Film Fest and Indianapolis-based Lodge Design teamed up once again to host an evening of good film, great design, and fun for all ages. This year, graphic designers were challenged to create a portrait of his or her favorite movie character, and attendees had the unique opportunity to bid on each piece of original art work, while enjoying live entertainment, food trucks, and beer and wine for guests over 21.

The event was held at The Speakeasy and silent auction proceeds went directly to programming and development for the 2015 Festival.

The night was hopping with attendees having playful bidding wars to score their own original piece of art. I enjoyed meeting graphic designers from our own local Carmel, Fishers, Geist, Zionsville and Noblesville.

Tracy Lawrence and his amazing band mates rolled into town for a good ol’ country crowd loving concert at the beautiful Carmel Palladium. The Multi-platinum CMA and ACM award winning recording artist has helped shape the sound of country music for two decades, recently celebrating twenty-years in music. Before the concert, guests were treated to free line dancing lessons from Indy Line Dancing (indylinedancing.com) in the East Lobby. Lawrence rocked the house and had the crowd dancing, singing and swaying all night long to his double-platinum hits like “Time Marches On” and “Alibis”.

Violinist “Joe” was also a hit with the crowd - he was simply electrifying! The crowd danced out of the Palladium singing and laughing … another wonderful and magical night at one of my favorite venues. Freedom Run

Looking for a healthy way to kick off your Independence Day Celebration?

We welcome volunteers of all ages and we have lots of jobs to go around.

All we ask is a minimum commitment of two hours of your time. In return, you will get a great volunteer t-shirt, you will meet new friends, you’ll have FUN and you will be helping the community.

What did you learn during the election?

I learned what a wonderful, friendly, supportive citizen population we have. The people of Carmel are full of warmth and are appreciative of everything that’s done in the city.

How will you prepare for the role?

I am going to be engaging a variety of professional elements. First of all, I’ll be participating in the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns clerk-treasurer symposium and workshop. They are the premier training organization for new clerk-treasurers. I’m going to be meeting with various individuals who have knowledge of the city to understand the various pieces of city government so I can understand the different pieces of city government.

What’s at the top of your to-do list when you take office?

I’m going to evaluate the process fees that are currently in place and their effectiveness and their efficiency in relation to their service to the citizens of Carmel. I’ll be attending all of the required meetings that the clerk-treasurer is obligated to attend. By law, the clerk-treasurer is required to attend. I’ll be attending the Carmel Redevelopment Commission, the Carmel Plan Commission and the Carmel City Council meetings as well. I’ll be doing that in preparation. We need to have a presence at the CRC. We haven’t had that in 10 years and it’s important to have representation from the city at the CRC meetings.

Work should be underway soon to fix the damages to the city’s reflecting pool memorial, located near the Pedcor headCity quarters and across the street from The Palladium.

The Carmel Redevelopment Commission had previously suggested taking more than $600,000 from the city’s rainy day fund to fix the damaged concrete, but that was voted down by the Carmel City Council.

City councilors said it was because the CRC could use its own money to pay for the repairs.

After settling a lawsuit, the CRC decided to use its money to approve $460,500 with the Smock Fansler Corporation. The council immediately approved the contract unanimously without any concern.

CRC Director Corrie Meyer said she knows people are eagerly anticipating the repairs and is happy to report that construction should begin soon.

“Work should be complete early summer,” she said.

Police probe alleged church scam

A Carmel Lutheran church was the victim of an alleged financial scam last week.

Pastor George Ferch of Bethcrime lehem Lutheran Church at 13225 North Illinois St. in Carmel said the church may have been scammed out of as much as $750 of congregation members’ money by a man claiming to need airfare for a flight to Beirut.

According to Ferch, the man said his parents were killed in an attack on Christians in the Middle East. The man stood up during the church service on May 10 and told everyone he needed to fly Beirut to identify their bodies.

“He was very good, really smooth,” Ferch said.

Ferch said after the man told his story, the

church put out an offering basket for him and the church members gave him $750.

“We did the right thing, he did the wrong thing,” Ferch said. “I’m proud of the generosity of the congregation. Sometimes you get ripped off. You just want to not be cynical about things like this.”

After further information was gathered, members of the congregation believed the man was scamming the church. No charges have been filed, but Ferch said he thinks the man has done this in other churches around the country.

“Bottom line is, [the Carmel Police Dept. is] trying to decide if there’s been a crime committed,” said CPD Lt. Joe Bickel.

Prasad hopes for semifinals

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Creekside Middle School sixth grader Ashwin Prasad, memorizing words on the spelling list was one major factor in qualifying for Scripps National achievement Spelling Bee. Remaining calm was an even bigger one, Prasad said.

“I kept my composure really well,” he said.

That helped the 12-year-old Prasad top many older competitors in the Hamilton County spelling bee competition, which runs through eighth grade.

By winning the county title at the Monon Community Center on March 16, Prasad advanced to the national competition, which begins March 26 in National Harbor, Md. Prasad will be traveling to the Washington, D.C. area with his parents, Srimathi and Dandi, and twin seven-year-old sisters.

His goal for the national competition is make the semifinals, which is the top 50 of 285 competitors. The semifinals are televised

by ESPN2 (10 a.m., May 28) and finals on ESPN (8 p.m., May 28).

Of the competitors, there are 196 in either seventh or eighth grade. There are three nine-year-olds, the youngest contestants.

“That (making semifinals) will set a base for the next two years,” Prasad said “I’ve been capitalizing on the resources on the spelling bee website. I’m trying to read books as much as I can to see if they have new interesting words.”

Liu captures national math crown

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com It was quite a memorable three-day span for Kevin Liu. First the Carmel Middle School eighth grader won the National achievement Raytheon Mathcounts Championships individual title and helped lead the four-person Team Indiana to victory at the competition in Boston on May 8.

Following his victory, the 14-year-old Liu went to New York to appear on “Live with Kelly & Michael” on May 11. Liu gave the morning talk show hosts a glimpse of his skills.

“I was a little nervous because it was live, but I was definitely more nervous at the competition,” Liu said.

His victory earned him a $20,000 Donald G. Weinert College Scholarship and a trip to the National Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. Team Indiana began practicing about twice a week in March.

“Those really helped me because we take tests that would simulate the actual competition,” Liu said.

“Kevin is a very gifted student,” said Ann Beyer, CMS teacher and math coach. “He’s very quick.”

Speed is a big key.

“You need to be able to solve the questions quickly so you can buzz in first,” Beyer said.

Liu was a runner-up in the Mathcounts last year, providing motivation for this competition.

Carmel grad Billy Cooke plans ride of his life

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Next month, Carmel native and recent Purdue University graduate William Cooke will start the ride of his life.

Cover story Journey of Hope, a 4,200 mile bike ride, is a fundraiser for kids with disabilities that begins in Seattle, Washington, and ends in Washington D.C. Cooke joined the Purdue fraternity Pi Kappa Phi his sophomore year, and he became involved in their philanthropy fundraisers to help disadvantaged kids. Previous to learning about the Journey of Hope fundraiser, Cooke was not a cyclist. However, his love for helping disabled kids has fueled his training.

“In high school I was part of Best Buddies, which is a program that helps kid with disabilities,” Cooke said. “I liked helping the kids.

I got to Purdue and rushed Pi Kappa Phi my sophomore year. My neighbors had ridden in the Journey of Hope and they had a blast. I was coming into my senior year and I wanted to do something awesome and this was a great opportunity.”

Pi Kappa Phi is the only fraternity in the nation to support its own philanthropic organization. Their organization, The Ability Experience, formerly known as Push America, aims to help people with disabilities. Journey of Hope is their largest fundraiser, one that raises over 650,000 dollars for the cause.

There are 75 riders including Cooke, and they take three different routes across America stopping at Boys and Girls clubs, high schools, and other organizations with disabled kids along the way. Each day they ride from 5 a.m. to noon to get to their destination. Some rides last 60 miles, some last 100.

Once arrived, the riders will spend time with the kids and hang out, hoping to make them smile brighter for a day.

Cooke selected the route that takes him through Indianapolis. He says he hopes that when he rides through he can see his family briefly.

The riders will stay at the organizations they visit across the country, and will eat there as well. A van holding possessions, bike mechanical supplies and emergency service supplies will drive close to the riders in case of an emergency.

Even though he was not previously a cyclist, Cooke has always been a fan of the good workout and because of his desire to partici-

“I think being a student at Purdue or college in general you have to learn to budget your time, you have to balance school work and social life. It has helped me manage how I fundraise and schedule my rides. I have also other riders at Purdue that without my fraternity I wouldn’t know about.”

The journey lasts through August, and Cooke will start his career in Agribusiness Management once he finishes the ride. Although many of the riders participate before the end of their senior year, Cooke is still excited.

“It’s an amazing opportunity,” he said. “How many times can you ride your bike across the country? I will always have a special spot for kids with disabilities.”

Chris Christie (R-N.J.) of losing his bluster (Current, May 12) than does he release this gem about President Barack Obama (D-White House) and trade initiatives: “I’ve said that the only way I would give fasttrack trade authority to a president was if it was a president that could actually … negotiate well, and after watching the way this president has negotiated with folks in Iran, I have real concerns about giving this president the ability to negotiate on his own.” As do we.

With regard to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Donald Trump (R-You Name It), in a joint statement with Americans for Limited Government, offered: “Instead of fast-tracking TPP, Congress should pass legislation that holds China and Japan accountable for currency manipulation.”

The U.S. Senate was scheduled to vote last week to advance the legislation. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.), with whom we don’t side on much, scored points with us on this: “We don’t create good jobs for Americans by entering into unbalanced trade deals that forego congressional scrutiny, and then looking the other way as the law is ignored so that we can import low-wage labor, undercut American workers, and drive wages lower than the Dead Sea.” Are the Republicans showing some fire? Yes. Will it last? We doubt it. Listen to Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.): “I am not for giving more authority to a president who ignores the Constitution, the separation of powers, and will of the American people. This particular President must not be given any more power to do anything else to harm this country. He cannot be trusted.” Really. Can anyone?

We humans care about status. A lot.

Archeologist excavating ancient Sumerian (centuries before Christ) communities, discovered necklaces of sea shells harvested hundreds of miles from the graves. It points to the likelihood that commerce has been with us from the very foundations of society – yes. But too, it indicates the desirability of prestige from our earliest civilized moments.

While some of us have become highly adept at concealing it, one would be hardpressed to find any among us who is immune to its allure. Sure, not everyone covets a red sports car or diamond ring of epic proportions; but if the consideration of status is imagined beyond the limits of precious metals, our obsession with it becomes clearer.

Some find the performance of our children to be status enhancing (perhaps extinguishing). Others care deeply about personal command of Holy Scripture. Oth-

ers still find appearance to be the currency of their own relative standing.

The last few years have been tough on California. Yet friends from certain communities cling to an almost antithetical boastful superiority. Can it be that the city of our residency is just another status tool? Are you really smarter and better if your zip code includes the Silicon Valley? And, does keeping Portland weird and Austin interesting actually point to an underlying desire toward superior status rather than the stated open-mindedness?

“If you are not from my town, you cannot be as cool as me.” Maybe. Or, maybe not.

Even as we are wisely investing in our own communities, we should be reminded – is our objective to achieve a better quality of life or to grab a little more status?

Fellow moms of this planet, our day has come and gone. We must wait a whole ‘nother year to feel loved and appreciated, to receive ceramic pencil holders humor and pasta necklaces and to earn an eight-hour reprieve from dishes and laundry. This most recent Mother’s Day differed dramatically from my first, when morning sickness kept me close to cold tiled floors, although interestingly, the same kid is to blame! Let’s pause to ponder the evolution of your favorite columnist’s Mother’s Days, shall we?

In the first few years, I can’t say I looked forward to the second Sunday in May. I hadn’t yet learned how to articulate my expectations, and more often than not ended up covered in vomit or baby poop as I cried myself to sleep. No flowers, no shopping, no mimosas. MD was just like any other day with four small children: mind-numbing, lonely and exhausting.

Shortly into 2005, realization dawned. All I needed to do was leave the house and not return until nightfall. My husband Doo knew how to open a can of Spagettios, change a diaper and dial 911; I was a moot point! So my annual sojourn morphed into a twelveto-fourteen hour guilt-free “Me Spree,” that included malls, movies, manicures and McDonald’s. And on the two occasions when illness or family commitments hijacked my “moment,” I simply called a “redo.” If I only get one day, dammit, it will happen, come hell or high fever.

Over the last few years however, I’ve felt the urge to spend Mother’s Day closer to home. I still go to brunch with friends and do a little bargain hunting, but I’m usually back before dinner to enjoy mandatory “Be Nice to Mom” time with my minions. And even though this year didn’t quite play out as I’d hoped – receiving a call in Stein Mart from your newly-licensed driver after he’s caused a fender-bender dampens the mood somewhat – I did appreciate the opportunity to pamper myself while it lasted.

Here’s wishing you a belated Happy Mother’s Day. [Seriously, he’d had his license for four days!] Peace out.

Our takes on steak: Best of the Northside

While many places restaurants have the word “steakhouse” in their name as an obvious indication of what they’re trying to advocate, there are places that sometimes might get overlooked.

Certainly there is a collection of names that come to mind in Indianapolis and the surrounding area when one thinks of the best steakhouse in town, but for those who wish to venture from the “standard” in the steak game, consider these choices for your next steak.

With the bold declaration of being “Carmel’s only Prime steak house,” Prime 47 is a force to be reckoned with. What sets it apart from its Indianapolis and Cincinnati locations is that it’s locally owned and operated, separate from the aforementioned. This gives it a unique

ambiance. Focused on sourcing the finest ingredients, Prime boasts its food quality is “second to none.”

As for the steak, my recommendation is the dry-aged Kansas City strip, cooked to your liking. The dry-aged process offers exceptional flavor boosting the tenderness and texture of the meat. Lightly seasoned with salt, pepper and a touch of garlic and thyme, this is a great steak. Try it by itself or with one of Prime’s decadent toppings.

While some readers may recall Murphy’s Steakhouse, now Murphy’s @ Flynn’s is off Allisonville Road in Indianapolis, and in Fishers is Murphy’s Pubhouse. A younger brother of the Indy location, the pubhouse is a laid-back bistro that sports similar style family owned values as Murphy’s @ Flynn’s, but in a relaxed pub atmosphere. With three generations of family in the restaurant business, Murphy’s Pubhouse owner/manager Ryan Stonebraker has a simple philosophy: it’s all about satisfying the customer.

“We just treat everybody right and that comes back to helping us in the end,” Stonebraker said.

My recommendation would be the filet, Oscar style. That’s a juicy filet mignon topped with a delicious crab cake, drizzled in a Chardonnay cream sauce. It truly compliments the steak.

Pair that with a baked potato and you’re set.

Secluded on the back roads of Zionsville you’ll find something of a gem in the form of a farm-to-table style restaurant.

Located at the headquarters of Trader’s Point Creamery is The Loft. What makes this place so special is its adamant approach to providing customers with the most organic foods that you can get your hands on.

Heading the kitchen is Brandon Canfield, a true culinary inspiration that goes out of his way to ensure nothing is wasted.

The menu varies by availability, but when in stock the filet is a sure win. During my visit I was served the pan-roasted, grass-fed strip loin. The grass-fed beef provides a steak experience unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. The natural flavors weren’t flooded by fat, as found in a standard steak.

Delicious.

Many connoisseurs of steak probably have heard of the famed St. Elmo’s steakhouse downtown. And while some may say it tops the chart, it’s more contemporary counterpart, Harry and Izzy’s on 86th Street near Clearwater, deserves just as much respect as its upscale equal.

Heading the kitchen at both St. Elmo’s and Harry and Izzy’s is executive chef Dave Foegley. Sourcing its beef out of Illinois, Foegley ensures that only the best beef they can acquire makes it to the table.

“We specify a certain grade and that’s why we set the bar where it’s at. You can buy an inexpensive cut of meat and you’re going to know when you bite into it.”

For Foegley’s New York strip, it is simply seared with a peppercorn crust, resting on Izzy sauce, leaving few distractions for a hungry patron’s palate.

Ingredients: 1 (1 1/4-pound) eggplant (about 4-inch diameter), peeled, Cooking spray, 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided, 2 3/4 cups chopped fennel bulb (about 1 large bulb), 2 cups finely chopped yellow onion, 2 cups trimmed arugula, 1 teaspoon white balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon extravirgin olive oil, 1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes, 1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled goat cheese, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme Directions: Prepare grill to medium heat. Cut eggplant crosswise into eight (1/2-inch-thick) slices. Lightly coat both sides of eggplant slices with cooking spray; sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Place on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill seven minutes on each side or until browned. Set eggplant slices aside. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add fennel and onion; sauté eight minutes or until vegetables are tender and lightly browned. Combine remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, arugula, vinegar and oil in a medium bowl; toss gently to coat. Divide arugula mixture evenly among eight appetizer plates; top each serving with one eggplant slice. Arrange about 1/3 cup fennel mixture on each eggplant slice; top with 2 tablespoons tomatoes and 1 tablespoon cheese. Sprinkle the chopped basil and thyme evenly over cheese.

Carmel dancer, age 12, to twirl with professionals

Youth America Grand Prix will bring an interesting mix of professional dancers and young dancers in performance training to the Tarkington on May 31.

The program, “The Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow,” begins at 7 p.m.

One of Carmel’s own, Connor Hamilton, 12, will be on stage amongst other young and professional dancers. She will perform her Talisman at the Gala variation.

One of Hamilton’s past teachers, Fabrice Calmels, will be one of the professional dancers on the stage. Calmels is a part of the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. Hamilton said she is looking forward to seeing him again and dancing on the same stage.

“I’ve been working on it for a month now and have a few weeks left to rehearse,” Hamilton said. “I really like performing in all the shows and performing in front of people.”

Hamilton has been dancing since she was two, so being on stage is nothing new to her.

Hamilton has danced in other YAGP events, such as in Indianapolis and Chicago.

She advanced to finals in NYC and was placed in the top 12 internationally.

Summer options for disabled kids Commentary by Catherine M. Michael, JD As summer quickly approaches many parents begin making summer plans for camps, academic enrichment and relaxation. programs Parents of children with disabilities can often struggle to find what is available for their child and sometimes feel like they don’t have many choices.

For summer academics, parents need to be aware of Extended School Year options through their child’s public school. Extended School Year is a legal requirement under the special education laws including Article 7 and IDEA. Extended School Year is different than summer school. If your child has a history of regression then this may be a necessary component of your summer plans. Parents need to be clear at their child’s IEP meeting this spring that their child does need summer services based on their child’s needs and history. Summer services can be specifically tailored to what that child needs and parents should not be afraid to ask for these necessary services.

There are also a variety of centers throughout Indianapolis and Carmel that provide

summer day programming for children with autism or other challenges. For instance the Applied Behavior Center in Carmel offers part time to full time summer programming that may be covered by your insurance for children with autism. The Dyslexia Institute of Indiana located in Indianapolis offers some fantastic camps for students struggling with dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and offer day programs to teen camps. Noble of Indiana offers Day Camps for children with and without disabilities. Easter Seals Summer camp offers a variety of day programming options in our area as well. For children with asthma Happy Hollow Child’s Camp sponsors a weeklong program this summer.

The Pint Room asks for patio

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com The Pint Room opened last year in the Sophia Square building, offering gourmet burgers and hundreds of beers restaurants on tap to its patrons.

But now there’s something else they want to offer their customers: outdooring dining.

The eatery wished to build an outdoor patio along 1st Avenue N.W. to help expand its Carmel Arts & Design District location.

The proposal – sent to the Carmel Plan Commission dated March 17 – outlines a plan to eliminate some parking alongside the corner establishment, but not along its Main Street walkway. The letter, sent by Rottman Collier Architects, said that since there are two stories of free parking within the Sophia Square Parking Garage, then eliminating one off-street parallel parking space won’t be a burden. In addition, there are free parking spaces directly across the street from The Pint Room behind the Children’s Art Gallery.

The letter states that the landlord has agreed to pay for site construction if necessary.

Site drawings show about 12 tables could fit in the planned space. The matter will be considered by the Carmel Plan Commission.

The Walls of Jericho

Commentary by Don Knebel Jericho, in the Palestinian Territories, is best known as the city where Joshua “fit the battle” and the “walls come travel tumblin’ down.” Archaeologists cannot confirm that famous Biblical story, but did unearth a tower that held a world’s record for more than 5,000 years.

Located in the Judean Desert, Jericho is known as the “City of Palms” because of its lush landscape, watered by underground springs. Nomads attracted by the springs founded Jericho in about 10,000 B.C., creating one of the world’s first permanent settlements. By about 9,400 B.C. the residents of Jericho erected the world’s first city walls, protecting themselves from hungry thieves.

Archaeologists have uncovered more than 20 successive Jericho settlements, each built over the ruins of the one before, eventually creating a six-acre tell (mound) of dirt and rubble.

In the 1930s, John Garstang, an archaeologist excavating at Jericho, uncovered walls that had suddenly collapsed, which he believed demonstrated the truth of the Biblical account. In the 1950s, Dame Kathleen Kenyon, a British archaeologist, made a systematic

study of Jericho’s walls and concluded that they had fallen, perhaps as the result of an earthquake, hundreds of years before the presumed date of Joshua’s battle. She also concluded that Jericho was not occupied at the time of Joshua. Subsequent investigations have confirmed her conclusions, which few scholars now challenge.

During her excavations, Dame Kenyon found a cylindrical stone tower about 26 feet high and 28 feet in diameter just inside the oldest Jericho walls. The tower, incorporating an internal stairway, has been dated to at least 8,000 B.C., making it perhaps the world’s oldest man-made structure. Archaeologists originally thought the tower had defensive or irrigation functions, but recent studies suggest it marked the summer solstice. Whatever its purpose, the Jericho tower remained the tallest man-made structure in the world until about 2650 B.C., when it was surpassed by the stepped pyramid of Djoser in Egypt.

Contemporary master bathroom with Lake Views Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING BATHROOM: The owners of this 1975 home, located on Eagle Creek Reservoir, had lived with their out-of-date master bathroom for nearly four blueprint for years. “We bought this house for the improvement breathtaking views of the lake, but the inside didn’t reflect our style. The layout didn’t work. It felt dark, the shower was too small and the humidity and moisture from the lake was ruining our clothes.”
