Construction aim: before July 4

Fallen heroes service – The City of Carmel will honor its fallen heroes with a memorial service at 9 a.m. May 25 at the Veterans Memorial Plaza on Third Avenue SW, south of City Center Drive. Carmel’s American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts will perform a flag raising ceremony and join the mayor, other dignitaries and a keynote speaker from one of the various branches of the military at this event.

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com For years, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard talked about reimagining Range Line Road, a commercial corRANGE LINE ROAD ridor through the center of the city.

The plan was to reduce lanes and add roundabouts, medians, sidewalks and street-side parking. An unveiling of the vision took place in April 2017.

Roundabouts already are complete at Carmel Drive, City Center Drive and 4th Street, and many new sidewalks are finished. Construction crews still are working on the project between Carmel and City Center drives, sometimes resulting in lane closures, gravel and orange cones.

It is all part of a $13.4 million transformation of Range Line Road between Main Street and Executive Drive.

Brainard said the good news is construction should be complete in that area in late June and will certainly be complete in time for the city’s annual Fourth of July parade.

“It’s going to be beautiful, and it’s going to be safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” Brainard said. “It’s really a grand entry into our city. We want people to drive up Range Line and not just have a safe and efficient road, but a beautiful one as well.”

Carmel Clay Schools officials have been discussing the future of Carmel and Orchard Park elementary schools EDUCATION as they consider the impact of projected enrollment declines and aging facilities.

It’s been suggested that either or both schools could be closed, which has mobilized parents from both districts to convince Brainard district leaders to keep both open.

Many parents have reached out to the Carmel City Council and the Mayor’s Office for assistance. Although some councilors have expressed personal opinions, the fate of both schools is with the school board.

“We have a five-member elected school board, and it will be their decision,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. “We’ve done everything we can to encourage beautiful neighborhoods in both of these areas. I’ve always been impressed by the school board, and they’ve done a great job obtaining lots of public input before making decisions.”

Brainard said sometimes constituents email him and ask that funding for a specific city project be spent on local schools.

He said he understands that some residents might be from different states where the mayor does have control of the schools, but he said Indiana has a state-mandated separate budgeting process.

That doesn’t mean the City of Carmel doesn’t cooperate with Carmel Clay Schools.

Brainard said he meets regularly with school officials to share information but that they always respect each other’s processes. Instead of writing a check to Carmel schools from city funds, Brainard said the city helps by supporting quality of life that leads to lower property taxes.

Brainard said he doesn’t want to publicly urge the school board one way or another.

He said he trusts the board and believes it will take public comment into consideration.

A recommendation on school facilities was expected to be made at the May 21 school board meeting.

Unified sports advocates to lead 500 Festival Parade

Growing up, Abby Abel was a regular 500 Festival Parade visitor. She’ll have a much different view this 500 FESTIVAL year.

“It’s pretty cool now to be leading the parade,” Abel said.

Abel and her friend, Mitch Bonar, were named grand marshals of the IPL 500 Festival Parade, set to begin at 11:45 a.m. May 26.

The Indy 500 is the next day, and Abel and Bonar will participate in laps around the track before the race begins. The pair was honored to highlight the good work high school and college students are doing as part of the unified sports movement, which unites people with and without intellectual disabilities.

500 Festival representatives surprised Abel at her Play Unified Basketball Tournament at Purdue April 16.

“It was breathtaking,” Abel said of the surprise.

Abel, a 2015 Carmel High School graduate and Purdue women’s basketball player, started the unified tournament as a freshman.

“It’s cool to see how (the unified tournament) evolved and for them to think our story is good enough and should be celebrated at the 500 parade,” Abel said.

Abel and Bonar, a 2015 Noblesville High School graduate, became fast friends through their work with Champions Together, a collaboration of Special Olympics and the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Bonar said unified sports show the differences are not that great.

“This is my first ever parade/race,” said Bonar, who attends Ivy Tech in Noblesville. “I was born here in Indiana, so it’s an incredible experience to have this opportunity.”

Abel said she is eager to share the story of her friendship with Bonar.

“He’s really inspired me to go on with the Play Unified movement and bring it to my college,” Abel said. “It’s great to share this with my best friend.”

Abel is delighted how her unified tournament has grown.

“We tripled the size of the event,” Abel said. “This year I was no longer contacting people, people were contacting me.”

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie news@currentincarmel.com Former advertising man and World War II veteran Keith Bratton couldn’t get rich creating ads, so he decided to PROFILE also not get rich by creating off-the-wall ideas, inventions and schemes. He’s been very successful.

He hasn’t made a dime.

Bratton, 92, was a longtime Carmel resident who moved to Meadow Brook Senior Living in Fishers two years ago following a stroke. He was one of the first people I met more than 35 years ago when I moved to Indy. I visit him often.

Here’s a look back at some of Bratton’s innovations: First, there were Santa-bolic Steroids, which were tiny pills to boost energy at Christmastime.

There was Kosher Konfetti for Jewish weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and circumcisions.

He invented a tiny mock cable to jumpstart your watch battery from someone else’s.

This one-time award-winning account executive for the Indiana State Fair set up a booth between the corn-on-the-cob vendor and the pork chop tent that sold … dental floss. He suggested the fair sell cotton candy that was 60 percent polyester and only 40 percent cotton, so it would be reusable (just fluff and dry).

If you’re always depressed when the Indiana State Fair ends, not to worry: Bratton made “Bags of Air of the Smells of the Fair” for people who wanted the memory to linger. It came in many varieties: Cow Barn, Swine Barn and Poultry. Oh, and there was a clear window in the bag so you could see what you had bought. A higher priced version was vacuum-packed.

There was Absorba the Grease, a product to remove stains, and my favorite: The Golf Ball Activator kit, with an antenna on the box. When the package was opened, the spring-loaded ball popped out, accompanied by a buzzer sound.

“I only made two, but I could have sold twice as many,” Bratton said.

By far his most popular invention was a splash screen for urinals with Osama bin Laden’s picture on it. He did sell quite a few of those, especially to local taverns. But he ran into an unexpected problem.

“People kept stealing them,” he said. “It kind of gave me the creeps just to think about that.”

Through the years, Bratton has supplemented his income with a unique style of art that he calls “whimsicals.” Each framed picture is a one-panel cartoon. The cartoon is not drawn, but instead fashioned with small pieces of colored paper, creating a three-dimensional effect.

“I’m the best in the world at it,” Bratton said. But he also admits he’s probably the only one doing it.

Bratton has sold hundreds of these.

Some are his own idea; others were commissioned by clients to emphasize an idiosyncrasy of a friend or loved one that they could give as a gift. One of his creations became the poster for the Indy 500 in l991.

It was a montage of the people involved in the event — drivers, cops, vendors, fans — made with dozens of paper cut-outs. He is still making them and selling them to residents at Meadow Brook.

“I can’t draw any more due to the stroke, but I can use scissors,” he said.

For many years, Bratton’s art was displayed and sold at a car wash in Castleton.

“Some may have looked down on that, but more people go through a car wash than a museum,” he said.

Box of Balloons launches locally

That’s why the Home Place resident launched a local chapter of Box of Balloons, a nonprofit that makes it possible for children in need to celebrate their birthday in style.

Box of Balloons started in Wisconsin a few years ago and has 26 chapters in 15 states.

Church donates bikes to homeless

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Cornerstone Lutheran Church recently donated 25 bikes to the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation to VETERANS distribute to homeless veterans in Indianapolis. The church did so in hopes of providing a mode of transportation for veterans to get to work, the grocery store or visit family.

The church bought the bikes from Conquest Cycling for a discounted price. The company outfitted the bikes with front and rear lights, water bottle holders and provided backpacks and helmets.

The group donated the bikes during a ceremony at HVAF Headquarters last month.

Originally, volunteer riders planned to ride the bikes on the Monon to downtown Indianapolis, but rainy weather canceled the ride.

Church member David Smith volunteered to ride one of the bikes downtown prior to the cancelation. He is a veteran and a bike rider who said he has a heart for other veterans.

“Anytime we have an opportunity to give back and honor (homeless veterans), it is a thing we should do,” Smith said. “The big desire here is we are able to give veterans

transportation through bicycles that enables them to find work and get themselves out of the issues they are in. I hope that by giving to them, they can be more successful in their own lives, and, at some point, get to the point in their lives where they can stand on their own and give back to other homeless veterans.”

The Carmel Green Teen Micro-Grant Program offers funding for volunteer sustainability projects ENVIRONMENT designed and carried out by young people in Carmel. It recently awarded two grants to three members of Helping Ninjas.

“Helping Ninjas is a student-led, not-forprofit. It was started as a little group of kids doing things to learn about pollinators, composting and gardening,” said Lindsey Berry, Helping Ninjas executive director.

The three College Wood Elementary School students, Siddarth Chavali (fifth grade), Vedh Barre (third grade) and Leo Berry (second grade) applied for two grants and received both. The first was $1,000 and will go toward beautifying Founders Park.

“There are three areas in Founders Park that are in need of renovation. We want to remove invasive species and plant butterfly gardens,” Berry said. “In the larger area, the kids are hoping to create some sort of walking path.”

The second grant was $780 and will benefit the Carmel School Community Organic Garden.

So Warren Gartner thought his church, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, could help provide a bit of nature by building a natural playground not only for the church family, but also for the community.

“In my work with the Division of Fish & Wildlife in the Dept. of Natural Resources, I was aware of the benefits of outdoor play for children. Outdoor play is shown to help with childhood obesity, ADD, ADHD and much more,” Gartner said. “Children who play outdoors regularly are healthier, more creative, better problem-solvers and generally happier than children who stay indoors. In my work, I’d helped design outdoor classrooms for schools and trained teachers and others who worked with children on ways to take lessons outdoors.”

slides. Dedicated in late April, St. Christopher’s Natural Playground is on the northeast corner of the church property at 1402 W. Main St. and is next to a large vegetable garden and wetland.

“We have a boardwalk through the marsh and a bird blind where you can watch birds.

There is a sensory garden with plants to touch, smell and see a variety of colors,” Gartner said.

Jamie Woodruff was searching her brain to find out a way to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of HamilFUNDRAISER ton County’s build.

“It’s hard to ask for money from friends, family and neighbors,” the Carmel resident said. “I kept thinking, ‘What rhymes with home?’ and came up with gnome.”

Woodruff shared it with a friend and build-team leader, Jen Petersen, who helped her design and make two, 3-foot wooden gnomes.

“Every night I would place them in a friend or neighbor’s yard,” Woodruff said.

“For $10 I’d remove it from their yard and for $20 they would buy gnome insurance, which guaranteed it wouldn’t come back to their yard.”

The Women’s Build Week for a home for a refugee family, originally from Afghanistan, in Carmel was May 8 to 12. The full homebuild started May 4 and is expected to last until June 1. Woodruff’s team consists of other mothers of a Carmel Pups travel baseball team. The team name was Swing, Hammer, Hammer.

“All the kids were getting excited because they would see the gnomes in people’s yards and couldn’t wait to get it in their yard,” Woodruff said. “It was almost like Christmas with the kids waking up to see if they got (the gnomes). One boy dressed like a gnome. We had fun with it. I met some new people. It ended up going out of our neighborhood and into other neighborhoods.

I look back if I had five sets of gnomes, that would have been golden because I could have raised even more money. When it’s over, I’m giving the gnomes to Habitat so another family can start doing it.”

Ex-resident recalls city in ’50s

Small-town Carmel is a distant memory for many.

Not so for John BACK IN THE DAY Kellogg, who fondly remembers spending much of his youth on an 18-acre farm.

“I’ve been back there several times, and you’d hardly know it,” said Kellogg, who lives in Indianola, Iowa. “When I do I Kellogg go out and look at the old house it looks exactly the same, except they moved the garage under the house.”

Kellogg, 77, said his father’s former home is situated near the south end of Clay Terrace. The 18 acres were divided up years ago to make room for other homes.

“We had two big barns and a huge shed,” Kellogg said.

Kellogg’s parents divorced when he was 8 years old. His father, Harold Kellogg, had worked as an executive with Firestone in Akron, Ohio, before being transferred to Noblesville. Kellogg initially lived with his father in Indianapolis for third grade, and then his father bought the home in Carmel in 1951. Kellogg attended fourth through sixth grade in Carmel. Then, before his seventh-grade year, the courts gave custody to his mother during the school year. So he lived with his mother in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, during the school year and spent his summers and some holidays with his father

Kellogg said his father starting raising horses.

“We had a grand champion palomino for a couple of years,” Kellogg said. “I rode and showed and helped raise quarter horses through high school. The horses on the farm are my main memory, and then the friends that I made.”

Kellogg said growing up in Carmel was a wonderful childhood.

“Cool Creek was right across (U.S.) 31,” Kellogg said. “My friends and I used to fish almost every day. I remember so much about that time.”

Another memory is going to the Carmel Theater on the southeast corner of Range Line Road and Main Street.

A 1962 DePauw University graduate, Kellogg worked in admissions for DePauw for several years. He worked for Simpson College in Indianola for nearly 30 years before retiring as vice president of marketing in 2006.

OBITUARIES Jay Steiger, 83, of Carmel, died May 5. He was born May 21, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Clarence and Leonarda Nickels Steiger.

Jay is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosemary; children, Kathy, Mark (Anna), Terri, Laurie (Dan), Susan (Tim), Carol (Prescott) and Holly (Tyler); grandchildren, Caroline, Isabel, Eliana, Rosie, Anna, Brad, Kimberly (husband, Kyle), Kristin, Dick, Abby and David; and greatgrandchildren, Tyler, Derek and Benjamin.

Lory Chaplin, 90, died May 11. She was born in Michigan and moved to Carmel with her husband, Bob, in 1957, where she lived for 55 years before moving to Bloomington.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Michigan State University in 1949 and worked as a medical technologist in the 1950s and again in the 1970s.

She and her family were members of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church for 50 years and then attended St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of Bloomington. She had a love for music and sang in the choir for most of those years.

She was a sweet, loving wife to Bob, who preceded her in death, and mother and mother-in-law to her son Brian (Nancy) Chaplin of Vienna, Va., and daughter Janice (Jerry) Arvesen of Bloomington, grandmother to six grandchildren, and great grandmother to two little girls. Her sister Elaine (Robert) Westveer and sister-in-law Esther (Clarence) Christenson preceded her in death. She is survived by two brothers-in-law and wives, Don (Gwen) Chaplin of Selah, Wash., and Bernie (Sandy) Chaplin of Lacey, Wash.

She also was loved by 15 nieces and nephews.

WARYEARS GROUP CONNECTS VETERANS Carmel American Legion, VFW aim to build community for veterans of all ages

COVER STORY They were depressed and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In some cases, they had a gun in their hand as they talked to Effron.

“It takes a toll on you,” he said. “But when it’s a fellow veteran, you take the call.”

Walk into the Carmel American Legion at 852 W. Main St. or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10003 at 12863 Old Meridian St., and you’ll find Effron a room full of veterans having lunch, having a drink or smoking a cigarette. For some, it’s their daily hangout with friends.

“It’s home away from home for a lot of members,” VFW Post 10003 Commander Steven McDanield said. “I’ve got members that come in every day. I’ve got auxiliary members who have been coming here since they were 5 or 6 years old, and this place reminds them of their grandfather or their dad. Even though granddad has McDanield passed, this reminds them of those memories.”

Making connections

Both the VFW and the American Legion host regular social events that include golf outings, cookouts, karaoke nights, motorcycle rides, casino trips and more.

Every Saturday morning, the VFW has a steak and eggs breakfast that attracts 50-plus attendees.

Declining numbers

Both posts have moved locations throughout the years but have remained mainstays in Carmel, a meeting place for military men and women to connect. Many served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War or the first Gulf War. It’s been tougher for the posts to reach out to veterans from the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to a Washington Times article, only about 15 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are eligible to join the VFW have done so.

“They don’t know about us, and the younger people are so dang busy with school and work,” Effron said. “We’re willing to do anything. We just want to get them in here to hear our message.”

With older veterans passing away, new members are needed to keep the organizations afloat. Nationally, the VFW has lost a third of its members in the past 20 years, and the American Legion has lost nearly 1 million members from the 3.1 million it had in the 1990s.

Local numbers weren’t available, although both posts say they aren’t immune to the decline. But the post’s leaders are optimistic that if veterans knew about everything offered, more would join.

About 15 years ago, a group of local veterans started the Waryears Group to meet and discuss military books they’ve read.

“The first meeting there was about five of us at the Borders book store,” said Richard Osborne, one of the founding members. “It’s grown a lot.”

Now, about 30 members meet monthly in the community room at the John W. Hensel Government Center at 10701 College Ave. Each 1 1/2-hour meeting has a few announcements and club business, similar to a Rotary or Kiwanis club meeting, and then a guest speaker gives a presentation on a military topic.

The American Legion is a place for veterans and their families to connect with the community and meet friends.

But it’s not all about social activities. Veterans also can be connected to resources and receive help navigating Veterans Administration benefits. Effron said he’s helped American Legion members find employment. The organizations also are involved in a variety of charity events.

And of course, both posts lend a sympathetic ear to those suffering from PTSD or depression.

“We’re here for these people, and we want them to know there’s not stigma about seeking help,” McDanield said.

Both organizations also are involved in a variety of events for charity.

The local American Legion post has raised more than $630,000 during the last 26 years for the Indiana Veterans Home, the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Fund and the Legion scholarship fund for high school juniors and seniors in Hamilton County. VFW holds similar golf outings for local charities.

McDanield said he’s especially proud of the Honor Guard services. The Carmel VFW has a team of volunteers that provide free ceremonies to honor veterans upon their death. It includes folding and presentation of the flag, a three-volley, seven-rifle salute and the playing of “Taps.”

Upcoming Military Events CITY OF CARMEL MEMORIAL DAY At 9 a.m. May 25, the City of Carmel will honor its fallen heroes with an event outside the Veterans Memorial Plaza on Third Avenue SW, south of City Center Drive. Carmel’s American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts will perform a flag-raising ceremony and join the mayor, other dignitaries and a keynote speaker from one of the various branches of the military.

AMERICAN LEGION CHARITY GOLF OUTING On July 20, American Legion Post 155 will hold its annual golf tournament at Brookshire Golf Course in Carmel. Start time is 11 a.m. Cost is $500 per team or $125 per player. Entry fees are due no later than July 10 and are non-refundable. Participants can sign up at the American Legion.

The good folks at our Indiana Legislature have just completed a “special legislative session” of that august body. It seems that the governor convened the group because of work they did not complete before adjourning for the year. As might be expected, not everyone took the same view about the unusual move.

Some hold that the estimated $30,000 expense is unnecessary – especially since much of the money is going to the people who, as the argument goes, are responsible to have avoided the extension in the first place (incidentally, many legislators have publicly announced their intention to donate the added salary to their favorite charities). Others believe that this year was so abundantly important that it would have taken a Herculean effort to get the job done on time.

Without regard to the machinations of the political machinery of our fine state, one imagines the very notion of a do-over.

How would our lives be different if we could call a “special personal session” to rethink and correct our failures, regrets and shortcomings? In a relationship gone awry, could we bring everyone back to “work it out?” In a failed business venture, could we return to the table knowing that we cannot leave until we find a resolution?

Would knowing that we had a failsafe only lead us into further brinksmanship?

Or, would understanding that some higher authority would call us to account for our failures keep us focused on the many tasks confronting us? Life rarely allows itself to be relived. If we fail, we live with the consequences. Yet, are we doomed only to our past self? Is it time for us to call a special session of our own?

I’ve made a radical observation, people: Grounding a teenager is like teaching a baby to sleep through the night. Here we go!

HUMOR One of my early goals as a mom was always to get my precious little infant to sleep a solid eight hours. To do so successfully required three to four nights of me fighting back high blood pressure and tears while my baby “cried it out.” Despite understanding the rationale for such cruel tactics, the urge to succumb to Mama Beardom was generally so great that my husband, Doo, would have to physically restrain me from “going in.”

Apparently, the tortuous wails of our offspring didn’t affect him. Monster. Of course, this maternal misery was quickly forgotten with the first night of uninterrupted sleep, praise Jesus, but each time I had to go through it, it was pure hell.

Enter grounding a teen. I know in my heart of hearts that when one of our highschoolers makes a poor decision, he or she must face the consequences. This is how they learn from mistakes and avoid adult incarceration. But it’s so much harder when they can argue their case and play the Unfair Card (which they know is my personal trigger). They barter and bribe and professionally manipulate until I’m ready to not only reduce their sentence but extend their privileges. Luckily, Doo isn’t fooled by this nonsense. Just as he did when they were newborns, he keeps me strong.

So, even though 75 percent of our kids can now drive, they will always be my babies. And sometimes, even when it’s difficult, I still have to let them cry it out.

READER’S VIEW Ask McDonald’s to switch to biodegradable straws Editor, I recently made a new petition. The petition is about getting McDonald’s to switch to biodegradable straws. I made it on change.org, and it has more than 1,700 signatures.

I made it because of the effects plastic has on the environment. Plastic is almost constantly hurting us. When plastic is made, it releases carbon emissions into the air. When we throw it away with all of our compostable items, it creates methane. Even recycling causes carbon emissions. When it doesn’t go to landfills, it goes to the oceans. There, it enters the food chain and kills animals. Fish eat plastic, and we eat fish. Straws also get stuck up the noses of turtles and kills them. NPR also reported that there are now particles of plastic in our salt. People all over the world are probably eating tiny pieces of plastic right now!

I targeted straws in general because they are probably the biggest way that we use plastic. We use 500 million plastic straws every single day. That adds up to more than 182 billion straws every single year. Some people say that they use

straws at a restaurant because of hygiene issues and don’t want to touch their lips to the glass. Well, if they are so worried about germs and not trusting the restaurant to clean the glasses, they shouldn’t even eat there. If needed, there are paper and compostable straws available. There also are stainless steel and glass straws.

The petition also was a part of my EcoScience Fair project. I used the petition along with other ways to cut down on straws usage in my presentation. I got second place in my age group and won first place for the community impact award.

I think that this petition is very important. McDonald’s gives out 12 percent of all the world’s straws. If McDonald’s can only use paper or other biodegradable straws, it can cut down on a lot of plastic straw usage, and that will help the environment.

Meditations on angry meditators Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I’m under fire after a recent column I wrote about people who meditate. Here is an actual email I received: HUMOR HOW DARE YOU CRITICIZE MEDITATION! I WAS AN UPTIGHT ANGRY PERSON UNTIL I STARTED MEDITATING. YOU ARE REALLY TICKING ME OFF!!!!

OK, using all uppercase is not a capital offense (or maybe it is), but it did make me rethink my initial observations.To educate myself, I headed for a local health food market where they have a bigger selection of New Age magazines than granolas. I was trying to find the right publication, so I grabbed one called Mindlessness, which I thought would advocate for my personal lifestyle. When I got home I realized it was actually called Mindfulness, which was not something I was remotely interested in.

The publication was chock full of advice on how to focus, but experts also advised you should let your mind wander, so I became very confused. How can you do both?

One writer claimed meditation goes back to the early shepherds in the Promised Land.

While the shepherd was minding his flock, if he dozed off, his sheep would do the wan-

dering for him. There you go.

Most of the exercises can be done in the sitting position — exactly the kind of fitness program I was looking for. First, there is alternate nostril breathing: “Hold your right thumb over your right nostril, then release the right nostril and plug it with your pinkie.”

I gave it a try, but my wife came in the room and caught me with my finger up my nose.

One yoga teacher advocates “holding your ears down with two fingers and gently pulling them away from your head at a 45-degree angle.” My wife caught me doing this, also, and told me to go back to picking my nose. Another meditation guru suggests hiding your cellphone to achieve some peace. No problem: I can never find it, anyway.

Finally, “Plant a seed, water it daily and expose it to daylight. Then enjoy the beauty you will behold.” I did that with grass seed. We still have the worst lawn in the neighborhood.

I’m going to meditate on that.

Shop makes customized donuts

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com For four years, Stephany Steiner, a stayat-home mom in Zionsville, has been toying with the idea of opening up a DONUTS boutique donut shop.

“It started as a love for donuts,” she said. “I’d work on the idea when my kids were napping or at school.”

Steiner wanted to do something similar to Charlie’s Donuts in Florida. When her family would visit Rosemary Beach, they’d wake up early to get fresh donuts around 6 or 6:30 a.m. since there would be a long line and they’d sell out fast.

Steiner wanted to create something unique with that same kind of draw. After long nights of researching and lots of donut tasting, she said “our stars aligned” and she opened her own shop, the Donut Refinery, on Old Meridian Street in Carmel next to Brockway Public House. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to noon Sundays.

The concept is a little different from other local donut shops. Customers build their own donut by starting off with a vanilla cake donut and adding icing, a topping and

a drizzle. Icings include vanilla, chocolate, maple, caramel and more. Toppings include sprinkles, Oreos, bacon, nuts, fruity pebbles and more. Cost is $1.75 for a single donut, $9.50 for a half dozen and $18 for a dozen.

The Donut Refinery fills large orders ahead of time and creates treats for special events such as birthday parties and weddings.

For $265, the Donut Refinery rents its space for 12 guests on Sundays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Attendees get their own apron to decorate and take home and each guest gets to decorate and take home six donuts.

Additional donuts are used as a birthday cake and beverages are included.

Dr. Taha Z. Shipchandler’s work not only helps patients breathe, swallow and speak better, but he also helps GIVING BACK patients put their best face forward – locally and globally.

The surgeon has performed more than 200 facial reanimation surgeries, making him one of only a few doctors in the Midwest to perform the procedure to correct paralysis regulary. He also travels internationally on medical missions at least once a year to impoverished areas.

Shipchandler, 41, said in medical school he became fascinated with how a person’s face is his or her way of interacting with the world.

“My goal has always been to allow people to interact with the world in their best way possible,” he said.

The Zionsville resident’s office at IU Health North Hospital in Carmel offers cosmetic and reconstructive surgical and medical services for the face, head and neck.

Shipchandler specializes in facial plastic surgery, facial otolaryngology and head and neck surgery.

An immediate difference In Eldoret, Kenya, Shipchandler led a team of surgeons from the IU School of Medicine to assist children in need of facial plastic surgery for cleft lips and palettes. During a 2012 trip, he performed more than 27 surgeries in five days.

During the trips, Shipchandler said he is able to make an immediate difference.

“We’re able to change them in one surgery,” he said.

Each year, Shipchandler volunteers with team members from IU Health and the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center to support Aproquen, Inc., a nonprofit that provides free holistic care to children suffering from burns, facial abnormalities and cleft lips and palates in Nicaragua. The group sees 100 to 150 patients during its one-week visit.

Shipchandler said the relationship between doctors and patients is unhindered during the trips, with little paperwork and a mutual understanding of the risk and benefits.

“It’s a really warm, wonderful atmosphere,” Shipchandler said. “It’s health care at its purest.”

Shipchandler performed the first surgery of its kind in Nicaragua when he assisted a 12-year-old boy who was burned by a kerosene lamp. Because of the accident, the boy’s neck scarred over and became attached to his chest. As a result, he could only look down. Shipchandler performed a free-tissue transfer to free his neck to stretch open.

“Immediately, he was able to look straight up or even look up at the sky,” Shipchandler said.

Form and function Shipchandler has a deep interest in the science of beauty and gives national talks on the subject. He said he enjoys the challenge of merging form and function to assist people through facial reconstructive surgery.

Shipchandler helped launch the division of Facial Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery in the IU Health system, where he serves as division chief. He is co-director of the IU Health Nose and Sinus Center, where he leads the facial cosmetic efforts and performs more than 250 nose operations each year.

Shipchandler and his wife, Laurie, a pediatrician at Eskenazi Health, have two children, Isaac, 11, and Salma, 7.

Third time’s a charm

By Heather Lusk • editorial@youarecurrent.com Claire Kaufman is about to appear in her third production of “Annie” within the past year, but this time she’ll play the lead in full-length professional theater at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre.

THEATER She’ll share the stage with friend Anna Wagner, whom she met when they played orphans in Carmel’s Civic Theater production of “Annie” in fall 2017.

“It’s pretty crazy because there were only a couple of us that got in (at Beef & Boards),” Kaufman said. “And, of course, we were the orphans that have the same birthday.”

The Zionsville residents recently turned 12 and celebrated their birthdays together. This will be Wagner’s first professional production, but Claire got a taste for professional theater and a more grueling schedule in “Peter Rabbit” at the IRT. “I’m glad that I have a little head start,” Kaufman said.

Wagner and Kaufman will perform 46 shows of “Annie” from May 31 to July 15.

“I feel like it’s going to go really fast, though,” Wagner said.

Despite the busy schedule, Kaufman and Wagner look forward to spending spend time with the new friends they’ll make.

“The thing is that we get to hang out with our (school) friends every day,” Kaufman said. “The people (like Anna) you don’t see that often you get to hang out with.”

Wagner is cast as Pepper, one of the older and tougher orphans. Sadie Cohen from Carmel also is part of the cast. The girls portraying orphans range in age from 8 to 13 and come from as far as Crawfordsville and Kokomo.

“Anytime we use local talent we’re always blown away by the level of talent we see,” said Eddie Curry, Beef & Boards’ artistic director.

Curry said the theater typically casts young local talent instead of bringing in performers because of logistical costs, but also because of central Indiana’s deep talent pool.

During auditions, Kaufman and Wagner said they felt nervous seeing other children with extensive theatrical experience.

“I was like, ‘These girls are so professional,’” Kaufman said.

While waiting for cast assignments, the girls were tasked with learning all lines and songs on their own before diving into two weeks of rehearsals prior to opening night.

Although she portrayed Annie a few months ago in an abbreviated version of Zionsville Middle School’s production, Kaufman has had to learn many new elements of the role.

“There’s actually more songs in the original one, more lines,” Kaufman said.

She’s been helped by her sister, Cynthia Kaufman, who is an actress and student at Zionsville Community High School. Cynthia has been part of the Beef & Boards family, having been an understudy to the Wednesday Adams character in “The Adams Family” several years ago.

Cynthia also inspired humility in her sister.

“I want to be the person who pushes others to try their best,” Claire Kaufman said. “I don’t like bragging because people don’t like it.”

Ruoff Home Music Center will host the most concerts it has since the outdoor venue opened as Deer Creek Music Center in 1989 in Noblesville, spokesman Andy Wilson said.

Nearly 50 concerts have already been announced so far.

The center was slated to open its concert series with country star Jason Aldean May 19. The series’ second concert will be perennial crowd favorite Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. Buffett played at the venue 25 consecutive years before skipping in 2015, returning in 2016 and skipping again in 2017.

Kenny Chesney will appear May 31 and then the calendar really heats up starting with Dead & Company June 6.

Dave Matthews will play two concerts July 6-7. Lynyrd Skynyrd will stop on its farewell tour Aug. 4.

The September schedule has five shows, capped by Ozzy Osbourne Sept. 23.

The final scheduled performance for 2018 is Chris Stapleton Oct. 5.

Carmel — Late Night on Main will be from 9 p.m. to midnight May 26 in the Arts & Design District.

The event includes live music and shops, galleries and restaurants open late.

The Bishops return to Fishers

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Bryan Bishop is glad his group, The Bishops, will be a return guest to Fishers’ Tuesday night summer concert MUSIC series.

“We absolutely love the venue and we savor the opportunity to get in front of four or five thousand people who would not normally see us at a bar,” Bishop said.

“We are a wedding and corporate event band, so showcasing our show to all ages is key to our business growth.

The summer concert series begins its 16th consecutive year in Fishers June 5 at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. The Bishops will play July 10. The concerts are from 7 to 9 p.m.

A Carmel resident, Bishop will play at the Gazebo Concert Series’ 25th anniversary celebration Aug. 1. Bishop, who is on the Fountain Square Committee that runs the series, has served as emcee of many of the concerts the past few years. The Bishops have played the Summer Concert Series at the Gazebo the past five years.

“We are so honored to be the band to celebrate their 25th anniversary,” he said.

Trumpet standout to perform

CONCERT “It’s not exaggerating to say Allen Vizzutti is one of the great trumpeters of history,” Conrad said. “He will be our trumpet soloist, and his wife (Laura) is a tremendous pianist and she will be our piano soloist.”

IWS presents “Trumpet Magic with Allen Vizzutti” at 7:30 p.m. May 25 at The Palladium.

Vizzutti performed with the IWS five years ago, Conrad said. This will be the first appearance on stage with IWS by Laura.

“Together they will do a piece that Allen wrote for them to perform with orchestras called ‘Gershwin’s Timeless Treasures,’” Conrad said. “It’s one they’ve done with orchestras around the country and probably in Europe as well.”

Conrad said it will include “I Got Rhythm,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” “Rhapsody in Blue” and some songs from “Porgy and Bess.”

Conrad said the Vizzuttis are huge IndyCar racing fans and will join him at the Indianapolis 500 May 27.

The name Sotheby’s has been synonymous with art since its inception in 1744 by Samuel Baker. Sotheby’s is the EXHIBIT oldest and largest internationally recognized firm of fine art auctioneers in the world. The company also has a real estate division.

Encore Sotheby’s International Realty in Carmel is owned by Mark Zukerman. He was looking for a way to bring the same appreciation of fine art from the auction house to his real estate business.

“I was in (New York City) at the Sotheby’s auction house and noticed they had art that was going to be auctioned off at a future auction available for the public to view,” Zukerman said. “I wondered if I could bring the same idea back to Indianapolis and give the local artists a platform.”

That concept became known as the Encore Sotheby’s International Realty Visiting Artist Series Presented by the Bank of Indianapolis. The first artist to be showcased in Carmel is Cindy Wingo. The exhibit is expected to be displayed for at least two more months.

“At that point we invited people from our sphere as well as the artist’s sphere as a way to get people into our office to see Cindy’s work,” Zukerman said. “The idea being it would be a non-traditional gallery setting within our office.”

The philosophy of the show quickly evolved to include raising funds for a charity of the artist’s choice.

“Over the course of (several) years we had brought on different charities to be involved as a way to give money back to the local nonprofits who might have a revenue need,” said Zukerman, whose headquarters moved from the north side of Indianapolis to Carmel in November 2017.

The shows are held twice a year in the spring and fall. The spring show was recently held in conjunction with the May 3 grand opening of the new office. Wingo returned as the featured artist to bring the event full circle.

Background Info: This 1980s home is in the Windjammer neighborhood near Geist. Although this is a very desirable area, the finishes of the home were dated and lacked appeal. Additionally, much of the space was functionally underutilized.

The goal was to give the owners a new master suite that was modern yet timeless and get better utilization out of the space they had.

1. One major transformation came from removing the carpet and replacing it with a wood-look tile. This unique tile flooring is much more functional and visually appealing.

2. Another large impact came from updating all the cabinetry and adding an additional vanity space with custom cabinet accessories, like built-in laundry hamper storage.

3. Removing the shower and replacing it with a larger custom tile shower helped give the space a more updated look.

4. Replacing the tub and adding some detailed tile work and paneling helped create a cohesive design.

5. Additionally, fixtures, hardware and painting completed the look.

Touring Mesa Verde National Park Commentary by Don Knebel Mesa Verde National Park, in the southwest corner of Colorado, includes remarkably well-preserved dwellings of people living in what is now North America TRAVEL hundreds of years before Columbus.

More than 10,000 years ago, Native Americans began living in what is now the Four Corners region of the United States. Originally hunter-gatherers, they eventually established villages and cultivated corn. In about 600 A.D., a group now called the Ancestral Puebloans, perhaps to escape their enemies, began building villages atop a 7,000-foot-high plateau Spanish explorers named Mesa Verde (Green Table). They located their villages on ledges below overhanging rocks. By the 13th century, these cliff dwellers were constructing long-lasting structures made of sandstone blocks held together by mortar, with roofs made of wood. They erected stone towers as lookouts for PUBLIC NOTICE In accordance with Indiana Code 327 IAC 15-5 (Rule 5) from the NPDES General Permit Rule Program, and on behalf of the City of Carmel, CrossRoad Engineers, PC (3417 Sherman Drive, Beech Grove, IN 46107) is submitting a Notice of Intent to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to comply with the requirements under 327 IAC 15-5 to discharge storm water from construction activities associated with the construction of Monon Boulevard – Phase 2. Construction is anticipated to begin June 2018.

Over time, about 600 cliff dwellings were built atop Mesa Verde. A collection of structures known today as Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America, built in about 1200 A.D. to house 100 people. It includes 23 kivas, circular rooms that were used in religious ceremonies. Cliff Palace also includes a 26-foot tall square lookout tower and a shorter round tower, the exact purpose of which remains unknown. In about 1285, the cliff dwellers of Mesa Verde and the inhabitants of the surrounding area abandoned their villages and moved south, probably to avoid a severe drought in the area, leaving behind many of their household items.

In 1888, two Colorado ranchers looking for stray cattle atop Mesa Verde discovered the abandoned ruins of Cliff Palace, which they described as a “magnificent city.” In 1906, after visitors had walked away with many of the artifacts of the area, Mesa Verde became a national park.

There’s an old saying: Two wrongs don’t make a right.

The idea is (for example) if your neighbor wrongs you by borrowing your hedge clippers and GRAMMAR GUY forgets to return them, it doesn’t make things better to send a large, unwanted pizza delivery to his house so he has to pay for it. Those two negatives don’t make a positive. Also, it kind of makes you a jerk.

In English, two negatives actually do make a positive.

Most of the time people don’t realize that using a double negative (also known as a negative concord) in a sentence implies the exact opposite of the speaker’s intention, technically speaking.

For instance: I don’t got no time for that. The person saying this probably means that they don’t have time for whatever “that” is, but by using “don’t” and “no” in the same sentence, these negative words cancel each other out to imply that the speaker does, in fact, have time for “that.” In the same way, saying, “He’s not going nowhere” implies that he is actually going somewhere. It’s kind of confusing, and, to be quite honest, it’s bad grammar. A nice way of saying this is the usage of double negatives in speech or writing is broadly considered nonstandard English.

Now it’s time to introduce some complicating factors into the mix (like when, for instance, your neighbor spots you hiding in the bushes and spying on him while he deals with the unwanted pizza delivery). In many other languages (including Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Italian and Polish), double negatives are commonly used to intensify the implied negation. The two negatives create a snowball effect in the sentence, creating an emphatic, super negative.

Not only that, but certain dialects of American English employ double negatives in their vernacular to the same effect as the foreign languages I listed above. I suppose if you’re with a group of people who all understand what you mean when you use a double negative, then it’s acceptable, almost like special house rules in poker. However, in more formal settings, double negatives should be avoided. When it comes to more buttoned-up situations (especially in important scenarios like job interviews and reciting wedding vows), you should avoid double negatives. After all, I think we could all benefit from a healthy dose of positivity.
