Board dismisses bribery complaint

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Hamilton County Election Board voted May 14 to dismiss a complaint from the county’s Democratic Party chair to POLITICS investigate allegations that the Carmel Republican primary mayoral campaigns offered or asked for money for candidate Fred Glynn to not run for office.

Two Republicans on the board, Ray Adler and Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Kreag Williams, voted to dismiss the complaint after the board’s only Democrat, Greg Purvis, moved to conduct a full evidentiary hearing.

“It may end up being a waste of time, but I think it’s important,” Purvis said during the meeting. “You could clear the air or otherwise.”

Lawyers representing three people present at a Feb. 3 meeting — Hamilton County Republican Party Chair Laura Campbell, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard campaign consultant Allan Sutherlin and former Glynn campaign manager Dan Hennessey — where the alleged offer took place presented affidavits from their clients.

Campbell, Hennessey and Sutherlin were not present at the May 14 meeting.

Glynn, who was not in attendance at the Feb. 3 meeting, previously said Hennessey reported back from the meeting that the Brainard campaign was offering Glynn $140,000 to not run for mayor. Soon after the February meeting, Hennessey went to work for the Brainard campaign. Sutherlin and Campbell previously told Current Hennessey requested the funds to keep Glynn from running.

Hennessey’s affidavit outlined his version of what happened at the meeting.

“The parties discussed whether if Fred Glynn were to forgo running for mayor, if the Brainard campaign would support him in a subsequent run for office,” it stated. “Al Sutherlin suggested that the Brainard campaign could host a future fundraiser for Fred Glynn’s subsequent run for office. I suggested that the Brainard campaign make a political contribution to Fred Glynn’s campaign committee, which Fred Glynn could use later for a subsequent race.”

The affidavits from Campbell and Sutherlin supported Hennessey’s version of events.

this point is woefully inadequate to reach a conclusion that a violation of election law has occurred,” said David Brooks, an attorney representing Campbell.

Hamilton County Democratic Party Chair Joe Weingarten, who asked the board to investigate the allegations, said after the meeting the board didn’t have a full picture of what happened since Glynn did not attend.

“Nobody approached Mr. Fred Glynn to provide his part of the story, so I think by doing this they have shut down the other part of the story,” Weingarten said.

Glynn said he didn’t attend the election board meeting because his side of the story has already been reported “all over the media.”

“At this point, I’m moving on,” he said.

Brooks speculated that Glynn didn’t attend the meeting because he didn’t want to face the scrutiny that would arise from promoting a controversy without firsthand evidence.

“Mr. Glynn, who in my opinion was wholly irresponsible in bringing these charges to the press and embarrassing the City of Carmel, should owe the citizens of Carmel an apology for making these allegations, which were ridiculous,” Brooks said after the meeting.

When reached by phone May 14, Hennessey said he never told Glynn that Brainard’s campaign was offering a bribe for Glynn to drop out of the race.

Weingarten said he does not expect to pursue legal action but he hopes that another entity, such as the county prosecutor’s office, will decide to investigate.

Brainard declined to comment on the board’s decision.

Memorial Day Ceremony — The City of Carmel will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. May 24 at Carmel Clay Veterans Memorial Plaza, 800 3rd Ave. SW. The keynote speaker is Ernie Lorch, who interrogated captured Nazi soldiers during World War II. The event will also feature a flag-raising ceremony, music and a 21-gun salute.

Bank robbery — Carmel police are searching for two suspects who robbed the Stock Yards Bank and Trust on N. Meridian St. at approximately 1 p.m. May 13. The suspects took an undetermined amount of money. No one was harmed.

One suspect is described as a black male wearing a dark hoodie and black pants. The other suspect is described as a black male wearing a stocking hat, dark hoodie and baggy black pants. Both suspects wore facemasks. Anyone with information is asked to contact CPD at 317-571-2500.

CCS hires director — Rhonda Peterson has been hired as Carmel Clay School’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment and will begin her new role July 1.

She replaces Martha McFarland, who retired in April. Peterson will collaborate with adPeterson ministrators, teachers, staff and other stakeholders to ensure academic growth for CCS students.

Gala raises $71,000 — The third annual Carmel Gala: Design Bright Futures hit a milestone raising approximately $71,000 on behalf of the Carmel Youth Assistance Program, making the 2019 event the largest single fundraiser for the organization to date. The fourth annual Carmel Gala will be held April, 25 2020.

Thunderstorm causes fires, downed trees news@currentincarmel.com Carmel residents are assessing the damage after a powerful thunderstorm quickly WEATHER tore through the area the afternoon of May 16.

The Carmel Fire Dept. received more than 70 calls between 5 and 11 p.m., with additional storm-related calls continuing into May 17 as power was restored and activated home alarms in several areas.

“The heart of that storm really ran through Carmel,” said Tim Griffin, CFD spokesperson.

CFD responded to multiple fires, car accidents and reports of trees falling on occupied homes and cars.

Fire departments from several surrounding areas helped CFD handle the call volume. Many homes and businesses lost power, and in some areas it wasn’t restored as of May 17.

“The crews did a phenomenal job,” Griffin said. “The guys implemented (their) training and really did a good job because that could’ve been a devastating fire.”

CFD also responded to a house fire after 3 a.m. May 17 in the 11000 block of Jordan Road. The vacant home was fully engulfed by the time firefighters reached it.

Griffin said he is not aware of anyone in Carmel suffering injuries as result of the storm.

“It’s fortunate,” he said. “People were staying inside doing what they needed to do (to stay safe).”

WISH-TV meteorologist Randy Ollis said the line of storms included 60 to 70 mph straightline winds strong enough to take down large trees.

“Part of the reason the trees came down is the ground was saturated,” he said.

Ollis said the storm appeared to hit Hamilton County and northwestern Marion County the hardest. No tornados were reported.

CARMEL Range Line Road has reCONSTRUCTION opened to northbound traffic but remains closed southbound between Eighth Street to just south of Clay Terrace for a drainage and stormwater project. Work is expected to be complete by Memorial Day. Work continues on the expansion of Cherry Creek Boulevard to complete the final phase to connect Hazel Dell Parkway to River Road. The project is expected to be done by the end of July.

A partial closure is planned at 96th Street and Gray Road for construction of a roundabout. The project was set to begin on or after May 20 with an anticipated closure of 75 days.

Lane restrictions are under way near Keystone Parkway and 96th Street, where a new roundabout interchange is being built. Construction is expected to last through the year.

Construction on a new access ramp from Lowes Way to Keystone Parkway is ongoing and expected to be complete by June.

Construction of a pathway along the north side of 126th Street to connect Keystone Parkway to Hazel Dell Parkway is expected to begin on or after June 1.

Guilford Road reconstruction is set to begin June 1 between Main Street and City Center Drive. A culvert replacement adjacent to Carmel Middle School is also expected to begin June 1. Construction on a new roundabout at Guilford Road and Main Street is expected to begin on or after Aug. 1.

A partial closure is expected at 96th Street and Delegates Row for construction of a roundabout. The project is set to begin on or after Aug. 9 with an anticipated closure of 75 days.

WESTFIELD A section of 193rd Street is closed for the installation of a new storm water culvert between Six Points Road and 191st Street, and the Spring Mill Road intersection will be closed until June 14.

Shelborne Road between 146th Street and 151st Street and between 146th Street and 141st Street will be closed for road reconstruction. The road will be closed to all through traffic, tentatively opening on or before Oct. 21. During the closure, traffic should utilize the signed detour route. Property owners will continue to have access to their properties through the construction area. This closure is part of the improvements to 146th Street, which will widen the roadway to four lanes of traffic from Towne Road to Shelborne Road.

Weather delays project’s end

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A road project originally planned to be finished in November 2018 now is expected to be complete by MemoRANGE LINE rial Day. Poor weather conditions have led to a delay in completing improvements to N. Range Line Road between 8th Street and Clay Terrace. The project began in August 2018 and includes upgrades to the roundabout at 8th Street and Range Line Road, improved pedestrian connectivity and installation of a stormwater collection system.

“It would be nice to control the weather, but we haven’t figured that out yet in Carmel,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. “(The project) fell behind because of the number of rain days and cool days.”

Several small business owners in the area have expressed frustration with the length of the project and difficulty for customers to reach them. Range Line Road is closed to southbound traffic in the project area. Previously, it had been closed in the opposite direction.

winter months, and traffic was open in both directions during that time.

Brainard has acknowledged the inconvenience road projects can play for small businesses in the short term, but he believes they ultimately prove to be a benefit.

“This project is important to a lot of small businesses. On that part of Range Line Road, the businesses have flooded over and over again,” Brainard said. “This project has fixed that.”

When the project is complete, Brainard said he hopes insurance rates will go down for businesses in the area, and he expects private sector investment will increase.

Lois and Tom Paino

Tom and Lois Paino of Carmel will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary May 23. They met at Central Bible InstiANNIVERSARY tute in Springfield, Mo., during their freshmen year the fall of 1941. They were married in the school chapel the weekend of graduation.

At the age of 19, Tom took his new bride and entered into full-time ministry in a storefront church in East Chicago. Their firstborn child,

Thomas Paino, III (Tommy) was born while in East Chicago. Later, the couple pastored the Assemblies of God church in St. James, Minn., where their second child, Susan, joined the family. They went on to minister in churches in Covington and Evansville, where their third child, Timothy, joined them. In 1956, the family returned to Indianapolis to join Tim’s father in ministry at his home church, West Side Gospel Tabernacle. It wasn’t long before their fourth and fifth children were added to the family, Tracy and Troy.

In 1968, Tim led the congregation in a move

near the newly constructed I-465 and changed the name to Lakeview Temple, now known as Lakeview Church. At the same time, he orchestrated the building of Lakeview Manor Convalescent Center. Lois founded and directed a Christian day care and elementary school.

They retired from pastoring in 1994 but continued leading ActioNow, a missions fundraising organization, for the next 20 years. Tom and Lois have traveled to 62 nations to minister and oversee construction of churches, Bible schools, hospitals and orphanages.

Group focuses on agreement

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com For many, the word politics is synonymous with fighting, discord and mudslinging.

But to Bill Keller, it doesn’t POLITICS have to be that way. The Carmel resident has helped launch a grassroots movement called The Agreed, based on his belief that most people naturally get along and are working toward the same goals.

“It’s hard to find people that you don’t like, and it’s impossible to find someone that you don’t agree with 90 percent (of the time),” he said.

Keller, who is semi-retired from a career in business development and specialty project management, wrote a book called “Agreed!: How to not let things we disagree on stop us from accomplishing the goals we do agree on!” in 2018 and launched a discussion group of the same name. Keller plans to send the book — which can be downloaded free at theagreed.com — to all elected politicians in the state legislature and Congress.

So far, the group has mostly focused on national issues such as health care and immigration, but Keller said its members are open to helping people process divisive local issues. Its focus will likely change as the group members do.

“It’s definitely grassroots. We don’t know what it’s going to be,” Keller said. “Each meeting we get a little closer on our guiding principles and mission statement, but we’re not very close to a mission statement.”

The group aims to gather firsthand information whenever possible. Keller visited the migrant caravan near Tijuana late last year, soon after the Trump administration made news for using tear gas to stop people from crossing the border. He met with migrants and plans to share about his experience at

the group’s June meeting.

Keller said he didn’t want anything to do with politics for most of his life, but he’s open to running for office as an independent someday, if that’s what the group wants.

Mostly, Keller hopes that The Agreed helps people stop making negative — and usually wrong — assumptions about others and the world in general.

“People think sometimes that (other) people came to their (different) views from something unethical or immoral, but it’s simply a different path,” Keller said.

Purchased 57 years ago, the Ortman family’s first communion dress has become tradition.

Betty Ortman bought a white FAITH dress made with lace and an organza-like material for her daughter, Cindy (Ortman) Meyer, to wear when she received the Catholic sacrament of Holy Communion in 1962. Betty, 87, has since witnessed seven other girls in the family wear the dress.

“I wore a little petticoat slip under it, so it kind of stood out a bit,” Cindy said. “It’s got a little overlay with a bit of lace on the bodice and that overlay continues over the sleeves, too, so you would have like a regular little cap sleeve, maybe just a little longer than a cap sleeve, but then this little bit of lace was like a second layer.”

Carmel resident Brookelynn Ortman, who received First Communion May 5 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Carmel, is the third daughter of Timm and Nancy Ortman to carry on the tradition.

Cindy received First Communion on Easter Sunday at St. Patrick Church in Kokomo.

Betty Ortman was the first to wear the family’s communion dress in 1962.

Cindy is the oldest, and only girl, of seven children. Her parents married in 1953 and called Kokomo home. Her mother was a nurse and her father started Kokomo Grain, which five brothers have operated since their father’s passing nearly five years ago.

Now, the Ortman siblings are spread between Kokomo, Peru, Lafayette and Carmel.

Cindy kept the dress in her closet for several years and used it to play dress up with

her cousins before it was worn again. She said she’s surprised the dress has survived this long, but it remains in good shape. It’s collected a few new ribbons and buttons in recent years.

“We use an antique linen wash to soak it in, and then I have a drycleaners in Lafayette who’s been in business for years and years and years, and I leave it with them to press,” Cindy said.

Mercy Road expanding reach

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Mercy Road Church has been expanding its membership since its inception. Now, it will expand its FAITH reach in the Indianapolis area.

The Carmel church has been inside the former Borders bookstore at 2381 Pointe Pkwy. near 116th Street and Keystone ParkHusmann way since December 2015.

The church plans to open its second location in the former ITT Technical Institute building this fall at 9511 Angola Ct. in north Indianapolis near 96th Street and Michigan Road.

“We’re hoping by this August, but definitely by this fall,” Mercy Road Lead Pastor Josh Husmann said.

Other new locations are planned on Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis, as the church plans to lease the Atheneum and open at a yet-to-be determined site in Fishers.

“We’ve kind of outgrown our space and we are sending them out in three different directions,” said Husmann, a Carmel resident. “We’re calling them locations now.

Within five years, they’ll share the Mercy Road name, visions and values but be separate churches.”

Husmann and his wife, Lisa, founded the church in 2011.

The upstairs at the new site is a separate nonprofit called Nexus and a coworking space.

Carmel resident Luke Edgerton, a 2005 Carmel High School graduate, is Edgerton the pastor of what the church calls the Michigan Road location.

Edgerton, previously the Mercy Road youth pastor, leads a 5 p.m. service on Saturdays.

“The Saturday night service is dedicated to the Michigan Road (congregation),” Edgerton said. “It’s as if we were having a service at Michigan Road (but) it’s just at Keystone.

We’ll have two services Sunday morning when we get to the new location.”

Edgerton said the Saturday night service, which started in January, averages 150 people.

“We hope to grow that to 300 in the next four months,” Edgerton said.

Young talks tobacco at CHS

By Riya Chinni • news@currentincarmel.com U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind), visited Carmel High School May 11 to discuss the Tobacco to 21 Act, a bill he is VAPING co-sponsoring with Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah).

The bill would raise the minimum smoking age in the U.S. from 18 to 21. Young said that along with a shift in culture, U.S. policy should change as well.

“The world has changed a lot, our culture has changed quite a bit and our understanding of the public health implications of tobacco usage has changed considerably since (I graduated from CHS),” Young said.

The senators want to end the prevalence of smoking among American adolescents in response to the recent spike in the use of Juuls and other vaping devices.

Young said it is crucial that Americans are cognizant of the negative effects of tobacco and the extent to which it plagues the U.S. “Our parents understand this, so many of our students and administrators and teachers understand it. I want the entire nation

to understand,” he said. “We have a national epidemic on our hands.”

Young said raising the smoking age would benefit the nation.

“Public health experts indicate that the most important thing we can do at a federal level, the most achievable and impactful policy measure we can take is to simply raise the smoking age to 21,” Young said.

“It will reduce health care costs at a time when Americans are insisting we bring down health care costs.”

CGI to address climate change

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel Green Initiative will present a sustainable living seminar, titled “National & International PerENVIRONMENT spective on Climate,” at 6:30 p.m. May 22 at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Avenue SE. Mayor Jim Brainard will offer insights from his travels to climate conferences around the world.

“I’ll be discussing what it takes to make a city resilient,” he said. “We’re Brainard doing everything we can to make our quality of life higher in Carmel.

That includes paying attention to air quality and water quality. And of course, those are both good now, but we want to keep it that way.”

Brainard also will talk about the city’s plans for higher rainfall totals.

“I’ll also discuss how we’re preparing the city to handle increased flooding and more intense storms with higher amounts of rainfall,” he said. “We’re having to change

how we design our stormwater systems to handle more intense flooding, which seems to be happening with the changing climate.”

Greg Kempf with Citizens Climate Lobby will provide an update on legislation in Congress and talk about how putting a price on carbon would work.

“CCL is a large organization where the vast majority of members are volunteers who are interested in, and advocating for, solutions to the climate change issues we’re dealing with now,” Kempf said.

CCL advocates for The Kempf Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. “We create long-term relationships with legislators both in the (U.S.) Senate and the House,” Kempf said. “Our team develops long-term relationships with the staff. We go over the science of climate change, the studies that have been done and the models that have been built around the original carbon fee and dividend.”

Soccer dream leads to Spain

“Since I was 8, I’ve UNIVERSITY HS always wanted to play professional soccer in Europe,” the Carmel resident said. “To be able to get a chance to go do that was really emotional for me. I had a couple of colleges interested in me playing for them but I felt I needed another year to mature, so we thought of a gap year and I was lucky for them to accept me into their program.”

Gailey will begin at the Global Premier Soccer Academy, an international academy in Valencia, Spain, in August.

“For a year, you are able to train as a professional,” Gailey said. “The goal is to get you in top colleges or semi-pro, amateur or professional teams in Europe.”

Gailey said he will be able to play with a local team from Spain as well as on an academy team with students from around the world. Gailey said he will take Spanish classes and get his coaching license, which will be valid in the U.S. “This experience for me is going to be really amazing. I just can’t wait,” Gailey said.

“I have some sense of what it’s going to be like with the play style and physicality,” Gailey said. “I felt I was ready for college, but at the same time there are those little things I can improve on, human interaction and listening. I wanted another year to perfect those things and have a step ahead.”

Without Dave Dugan and Paul Mendenhall, the parade wouldn’t be the same.

At the parade review stand, Dugan and Mendenhall have announced the parade side-by-side since 2003. In 2018, the review stand was moved to its new location on Carmel Drive.

“I thought it would be more fun if there were two commentators to play off each other,” Dugan said. “The concept was approved, and I was glad that my long-time friend Paul Mendenhall was up for joining the broadcast. Paul, I knew, would be perfect at it and hopefully we balance each other out well.”

Dugan and Mendenhall attended Carmel High School and launched their broadcasting careers as part of the high school radio team at WHJE. As parade announcers, they work closely with Hal Espey, a former CHTV adviser who is in charge of filming the parade.

CRC’s new office, model of city aim to draw new investment

COVER STORY The Carmel Redevelopment Commission unveiled its newest development tool May 15 as it celebrated the opening of its new 1,800-square-foot office space at 580 Veterans Way on the first floor of the Midtown South parking garage.

The scale model will allow developers to easily view the landscape of the Arts & Design District, Midtown and City Center Mestetsky and see how their projects would fit in.

The CRC is partnering with the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Digital Media Lab to design and 3-D print the new pieces, which are attached magnetically.

“We get to engage a bunch of kids through the library to do something that’s really cool, and all of it is going toward a Konshak way to drive investment to the city,” CRC Director Henry Mestetsky said.

The library will offer classes beginning in June to teach anyone interested how to design and print a piece for the model. At its unveiling, the model included the Palladium, Veteran’s Way parking garage and a few other structures. The city is looking for help to fill in the rest of the buildings in the area from roughly just south of 116th Street to north of Main Street, west of 3rd Avenue and east of Range Line Road.

Peter Konshak, CCPL IT manager, said he was surprised at the high level of interest in 3-D printing when the library opened its Digital Media Lab in 2016. The lab nearly doubled its 3-D printing volume from 2017 to 2018, and Konshak is eager to use the service in a way that will benefit the city.

“We were very excited when Henry told us about this project because we see this as an opportunity for people to participate by potentially creating a small building or house that can be placed on this model,” Konshak said. “We’re here as a resource for members of the community that want to do that.”

In September 2018, the CRC approved $3,600 to pay for the model display built by Fortville-based Kittworks. The CRC will pay for the project through its marketing gift account fund with donations from Pedcor, Anderson Birkla and Old Town Design Group, developers responsible for several major projects in the city. The fund also will cover the related Digital Media Lab class and the buildings produced through it for the model.

Beyond the scale model, the CRC’s new office was designed and furnished with its next tenant in mind. It is surrounded by new construction, which — at the moment — isn’t always a pretty sight. Being in the midst of a redevelopment zone makes it an ideal location for the CRC now and a paying tenant in the future.

“Three to four years from now, this (space) gets sold back to the private sector when there are not porta potties across the street,” Mestetsky said. “This thing will fetch a lot of value when we give it back to the private sector, but for now we get to utilize the space and not pay rent.”

Because the city owns the parking garage, the CRC can use the space rent-free. It’s been finished with wall art depicting Carmel projects in various stages of development and contains a conference room with movable walls for space flexibility. But other elements, such as the cement floor and absence of a dropped ceiling, show that the space can easily be customized for its next owner.

“Our goal was to spend as little money as possible to utilize the space but still have it look nice,” Mestetsky said.

The city spent $330,000 on building out the office space using surplus funds from Midtown development projects

that were required to be used for improvements in that area. Mestetsky said the city expects to “make a lot of money” when it eventually sells the space to a private entity.

The CRC moved out of the second floor of the Lurie Building on Main Street, giving the Carmel Utilities Dept. and some members of the city’s communications department room to expand. The city is considering purchasing the second floor of the Lurie Building, which it began renting in 2013 from art dealer Evan Lurie for $11,000 per month.

“We are exploring our options to see if it makes sense for us to own that space rather than continue to lease it,” city spokesman Dan McFeely said. “If it saves taxpayers money in the long run, then we may move in that direction.”

Mestetsky said he hopes city employees from other departments will use the new office as a resource when giving tours or presenting information about the city. Its location between the Arts & Design District and City Hall makes it a prime meeting or stopping point, he said.

“It’s smack in the middle of Midtown. We almost are like the doughnut hole in the middle of development,” he said. “(This office can) provide a place where developers can bring CEOs and foster more investment in the core.”

LEARN TO MAKE A MODEL The Carmel Clay Public Library will offer a program called “Design a 3D Building for the Carmel Model” beginning June 15 at the Digital Media Lab, 23 E. Main St., Suite 100.

Attendees will use Tinkercad software to create 3-D versions of buildings in downtown Carmel. Their designs will be printed on the lab’s 3-D printers and can be installed on the model at the Carmel Redevelopment Commission office.

Changing course

Commentary by Terry Anker From our earliest memories, we are encouraged to stick it out.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Even the tagline from the 1999 science fiction spoof “Galaxy Quest” admonished us to “Never give up. Never surrender!”

It makes sense. Unless we push our limits, we are unlikely to come to understand what those bounds may be. Sadly, most of us operate far below our capacity, comfortable ensconced in false, lowered perceptions about what we’d be able to accomplish if we’d just put our minds to it. Is it easier to quit than do the work? Probably.

Still, are there times when we are well-advised to wave the white flag? Have we arrived at the point of over-promise and under-deliver?

Certainly, we don’t know if we will fail at a task until, well, we fail at it.

And by then, the harm to ourselves and others is caused. Does this put us under some moral duty to fight to the death even if our good intentions have led us to charge into a battle that we don’t have the desire to undertake?

Happily, circumstance can change with the winds of our will.

Dedication often trumps inherent skill. The tortoise only beat the rabbit because of a willingness to take on the race. But, can there be honor in calling it quits? When can we justly declare victory – or failure – and move on?

Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky famously remarked, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” Naturally, he is correct. Yet somehow, we can suspect that his success, in part, is measured by the shots that he did not take. No doubt, don’t be a quitter. But also, know when it is time to make a change. Isn’t intellect a far better master than ego?

Going out a winner Commentary by Danielle Wilson People have been asking, so I thought I’d let everyone know. I did end up beating my husband Doo in a triathlon a few weeks back (despite my inane deciHUMOR sion to buy him an exceptionally fast bike). But only by 9 seconds.

That’s why I am officially announcing my retirement from any kind of race where Doo also is competing. Never again will I risk the chance of a humiliating defeat. My ego can’t take it and Doo is getting too good.

And it’s not just the bike. He’s always been a better biker. He may have passed me a bit sooner than expected, but I am used to having to catch him on the run. And here in lies the problem. Five years ago, Doo almost stroked out during the 5K leg. He walked a good portion of it and required a concerning amount of Gatorade and sitting to recover (I destroyed him in that race, by the way, even

though I was suffering from a stomach virus that included vomiting and a low-grade fever. Super fun!).

From that day on, Doo has vowed to get in better shape and to one day cross the finish line before me. To that end, he has since completed two full marathons and a countless number of half-marathons. He has transformed himself into an athlete by sheer force of will. And his 8-inch height advantage effectively eliminates my willingness to die before letting him win.

I have no doubt Doo will emerge victorious next time, which is why I have decided there won’t be a “next time.” I mean, 9 seconds?

Editor, I can’t possibly express my gratitude to all the people who supported our campaign over the past three months. Our victory in the primary was the sum total of many small things, the most important being neighbors talking to neighbors and spreading our message for positive change.

I especially have to thank my son, Pat, who got “volun-told” to be my campaign manager. Pat brilliantly took us from zero experience and zero resources on Feb. 4 to a win among seasoned and highly resourced incumbents on May 7.

My wife, Denise, was there every step of the way and showed grace and grit in the face of behavior that was at times rude and intimidating.

My sweet daughter-in-law, Amanda, also was there, tolerating her time away from Pat and brightening our campaign with her enthusiasm and humor.

And of course there was Nana, my mom and campaign “senior advisor,” who recruited her friends from bridge, Scrabble and Bible study. God bless her, she is 90 years old and worked greeting people at the polls on Election Day! Finally, thank you so much to everyone who volunteered their time and donated to the campaign.

Teens’ service a home run Commentary by Jim Serger Every single time I go to a baseball game, adults seem to have all the responsibility.

They are the ones who PLAIN TALK welcome guests, play the music, sell the hot dogs and interact with the fans. However, that’s not the case at one Carmel school. Here’s a timeline from a recent Creekside Middle School game.

4:30 p.m. to before the game even starts — Music is playing through the public address system, hip-hop music to get the players and fans going. The lineups are handed to the announcers and the concession stands are filled and ready for the fans.

4:40 p.m. — “Good afternoon, what can I get you?” Maya says from behind the counter at the concession stand, with a huge smile on her face. With that, the 14-year-old goes into full ambassador mode. She is the first line of communication to all the fans. She is the person the opposing team’s parents, grandparents, moms and dads first meet.

4:50 p.m. — “Welcome to Creekside Middle School, home to your Creekside Wildcats,” Kyle belts clearly through the public address system. This 14-year-old not only welcomes the fans, he also plays a recorded

version of the national anthem and introduces the visiting and home teams’ players.

5 p.m. — Play ball!

5:01 to the end of game — These two future leaders operate their battle station together in the concession stand with full gusto, their people skills on full display, their service to their school and community taking center stage. These two teens first represent their school, but most important, they represent our remarkable community.

Fans of all teams are welcomed not only with a smile but also with actual conversation and respect.

End of game to clean-up time — They open it up for business and close it down for the night. To Maya and Kyle and all of the other teenagers working hard for our community, I say thank you so much.

Next day at 4:30 p.m. — They do it all again.

Baseball legend Ernie Banks once said, “Let’s play two.” Maya and Kyle would even labor a doubleheader as first-rate ambassadors.

READER’S VIEW Appreciative of inspirational story Editor, I was just (delighted) at the article you wrote about Erin (Bower Patterson) in Current. It was just spectacular. Not just that, but you captured the essence of the wonder and the survival and triumph of that young girl.

Your words expressed and described the path that she had taken since the terror and how the path was one that led to incredible reversal of fortune: The victim helping other victims of unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances.

I don’t know how you decided as editor to put Erin and us on the cover, but I can tell you that it’s had a tremendous impact all over your (coverage) area. Putting such a positive story on the cover, I’ve been told by many people, was just such a wonderful and welcome diversion from the normal politics and bad news that is rampant in the press these days.

I am still getting people telling me they saw the picture and read the article. It was

captivating and is staying in people’s minds.

I have had countless patients of mine, when I go in the exam room, say they saw and read it, and they say it with such a smile and then say how inspired they were by the story. I’ve had neighbors and friends text me and email me similarly, and so has Erin and her family.

At InCycle, they display the article at the front desk, and so many have asked about it who live outside the Carmel delivery area.

It’s been all over Facebook and other social media sites. It is remarkable how far the reach of Current goes — people really do read and enjoy it.

Erin and her family will never forget you spending so many hours at our home and talking with them and even taking over as an expert photographer. The cover photo was just a snapshot that reveals so many things going on in each of our minds.

Thank you for all that you did and for all that you are doing.

For 40 years, I have shared in loading and unloading the dishwasher (I’d rather clean the toilet with my toothbrush HUMOR or clean out the gutters with a teaspoon).

Today, my wife informed me that I’m now forever relieved of dishwasher duty.

“Just scrape the dishes and stack them in the sink,” she said. “You’re terrible at loading and it’s gotten worse by the day. Ever wonder why when you unload the dishes, everything you flung into the machine willynilly has miraculously lined up perfectly in the appropriate slots? Who do you think did that?”

“Well, it takes almost an hour to run a load of dishes and I hear a lot of odd noises, so I assumed a mechanical realignment was one of the cycles.”

“You just toss the dishes in, with no regard for how the process works.”

“Mary Ellen, I load the dishwasher like I load our clothes washer. I don’t put socks in one part of the machine, then my pants in another. Why would I do that with cups and saucers?”

Mary Ellen claims I was getting progressively worse at unloading as well. I dump the entire utensil holder into the silverware drawer. She has this odd notion that knives, spoons and forks go into their own compartments. She wants them separated — even before we set the table.

She also says I’ve been messing up the inside of our fridge. Apparently, again, everything has its proper place, so that’s why the mustard has been moving from the top shelf to the fridge door and why lettuce has often crept south to a thing called the “vegetable bin.” Jars have to go on the third shelf. That’s gotta be wrong, because when I was 6, the pickles always stared me right in the face. Going eye-to-eye with kosher dills goes back to the Old Testament.

I also may have a shot at never doing laundry again, but I won’t get complacent about my lack of accomplishments. There are beds not to be made and rugs not to be vacuumed. I’m very proud of myself. I’m doing the worst I can.

Indianapolis technology company SENTELLIGENCEone has developed a prototype for an air INNOVATION monitor that could replace smoke alarms. According to founder and CEO Rob Qualls, a Carmel resident, SENTELLIGENCEone’s Smart Ambient Qualls Air Monitor would help consumers detect up to 16 toxic gases and let them know the moment a fire starts — even before there is smoke.

The new monitor, which is in the preproduction prototype development stage, employs the existing technology of spectroscopy, which can determine what objects or matter, including air, is made of by measuring its unique spectral signature.

Qualls said SENTELLIGENCEone has managed to shrink the technology to make it more cost-effective and easy to use.

“Spectral instruments have been around for decades, but up until recently, they’ve been very cost-prohibitive,” Qualls said.

“As far back as the 1950s, they took up an entire room. Part of our development team

was responsible for reducing the size of a spectrometer to basically the size of a quarter, and with that device you can analyze basically anything.”

Executive Vice President Greg Stewart said SAAM can detect chemical reactions that occur as a fire is sparked, typically in around .1 seconds, which could give homeowners more time to respond to a Stewart fire emergency.

“We’ve had conversations with some of the large smoke-detector companies. They have discussed that their products typically would sense smoke in a 10- to 30-second timeframe,” Stewart said. “The more time you can give the homeowner to evacuate or respond to what occurred, the better.

Thirty more seconds doesn’t seem like a lot of time, but if that gives you time to grab a fire extinguisher or help someone get out, that’s significant.”

SENTELLIGENCEone also is developing products to detect contaminants in food, beverages and pharmaceutical products.

SAAM is projected to reach commercialization in approximately 15 to 18 months.

“Both of us have a strong sense of courageous optimism and the desire to build stronger communities,” Sky said. “The essence of yoga is a natural fit for us in so many ways.”

The Andrews’ hope that Matt’s recent MBA from the University of Virginia combined with Sky’s 10 years of yoga teaching experience will bring a resilient business plan and harmonious yoga community to the area.

Several new restaurants and a host of familiar ones offer prime outdoor dining for the ultimate patio experience.

Here’s a brief guide to the best outdoor dining options in central Indiana.

CHIBA Address: 228 Park St., Westfield Menu options: Primarily sushi, owner Keith Dusko creates interesting combinations for sushi rolls, such as the Louisiana Purchase roll, which combines tempura chicken, green apples, yams and brie cheese.

Patio takeaways: Relaxing on Chiba’s patio is like visiting an oasis. Ferns and Edison lights are draped overhead, with potted plants dotting the pathways.

An enclosed space in the back offers a slightly more intimate setting and protection from rain. It is an excellent area for private events. Cornhole boards are available near the front of the property with a beachfront view of Park Street for those wanting to play a game while they wait for their food to arrive.

SERENITY Address: 135 S. Main St., Zionsville Menu options: Serenity is a quaint little restaurant nestled on Zionsville’s famous brick street that serves brunch and lunch.

It offers English teas, sandwiches and more options with tasty, refreshing takes such as the Shrimp and Lobster BLT or the Fig and Walnut Salad.

Patio takeaways: Enjoy your English tea surrounded by greenery. Serenity’s patio is bordered by small plants and around a large evergreen tree. Patio takeaways: Rooftop dining is all the rage right now, and Sun King Spirits features a second-story patio overlooking the Monon Trail. View Carmel from above as you dine outside and take in the city’s new plaza next to Sun King Spirits, which will soon offer games and food trucks. The patio is an excellent spot for people-watching.

FIELD BREWING Address: 303 E. Main St., Westfield Menu options: Field Brewing’s menu is more of a modern take on pub food, such as spiced sweet potato wedges, pan-fried schnitzel, beer-steamed mussels, spentgrain fettuccine and the list goes on. Executive Chef Alan Sternberg uses local and seasoned ingredients to create interesting flavor combinations and wholesome food.

Field Brewing prides itself on clean, quality ingredients in offering a unique dining experience.

Patio takeaways: Field Brewing’s patio is between two separate buildings. It has an artificial turf section adjacent to the patio seating, for little ones to play. Field Brewing also offers a variety of family games next to the patio seating, such as giant Jenga, giant Connect 4 and a bocce ball court.

CarmelFest seeking community volunteers We need you! The CarmelFest Committee is looking to staff various areas of the festival and the parade, totaling at least 350 volunteers.

“We wouldn’t be able to have a CarmelFest without volunteers, [and it’s] a great time to come out and enjoy the Fourth of July celebration and be a part of Carmel,” said Julie Bednarski, volunteer coordinator.

CarmelFest is also searching for marshals to monitor the parade route.

Marshals will meet head marshal Kurt Rupenthal at 7 a.m. July 4 at MCL and serve until noon when the parade ends at Carmel High School.

Individuals of all ages, and groups can sign up for mostly two-hour volunteer positions at carmelfest.net/volunteer.

New this year is the Volunteer Hospitality Tent where volunteers will be able to enjoy refreshments and relax in the shade.

CarmelFest Has Talent returns for another year with expanded audition categories and increased prize dollars.

Music for Miracles gives back Commentary by Jeff McDermott On April 28, for the sixth consecutive year, the students of Carmel High School’s Dance Marathon program PALLADIUM came to the Palladium to present their Music for Miracles event, a heartwarming and entertaining student talent show to benefit Riley Children’s Foundation.

I was honored again this year when the students invited me to offer welcoming remarks to the attendees, and it struck me how this annual event epitomizes the power of the arts to bring people together and heal bodies and souls. Music for Miracles perfectly blends the missions of the Center for the Performing Arts and CHS Dance Marathon. At the Center, we strive to engage and inspire the central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences. The Dance Marathon students – more than 100, in this case – say they do it all “For the Kids.” This magical evening embodied both missions.

We are fortunate in Carmel to have a school system and a community that value and invest in the arts and arts education. At Music for Miracles, the student performers

took the Palladium stage, one act after another, and wowed the audience of 800. Behind the scenes, other students worked side by side with the Center’s production team to coordinate lights, sound and staging. Adults, teens, artists and stage crew all collaborated.

As is tradition at Music for Miracles, the parent of a “Riley Kid” offered a testimonial.

James Dolan bravely recounted how his son, Jameson, was born with a life-threatening condition, but after months in Riley Hospital for Children’s neonatal unit and multiple surgeries by skilled physicians, he beat the odds and is now a happy and healthy 18-month-old. In fact, young Jameson attended the performance with his family and, as if on cue, let out a little yelp of happiness as his father talked about that journey to health.

It was a miraculous moment, music to the crowd’s ears.

Jack Clark sees a fun benefit of appearing to be swimming on stage.

“I think skating around on THEATER stage with Heelys will be so much fun, but I’m going to have to practice a lot so I don’t fall off the stage,” Clark said.

The Westfield Intermediate School fifthgrader will portray Flounder in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “The Little Mermaid,” May 23 to June 30.

“My little sisters (ages 5 and 8) sure are excited and I think it will be fun,” Clark said.

“They have been more excited about this show than any other show I’ve been in.”

Clark, 11, caught the acting bug early.

“I started acting when I was 7 years old and have not stopped since,” Clark said. “I got my start in one of my uncle’s (Craig Whitcombe) shows at The Biz (in Avon) and have had many amazing opportunities since then.

Some of my favorites were playing Winthrop in ‘The Music Man’ with the Civic Theatre, Louis in ‘The King and I’ with Brebeuf (Preparatory School) and Christian in ‘Fun Home” with Ball State.”

Untangling intransitive verbs Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I ran into my friend Lou at the farmers market on Saturday, and she looked troubled. This wasn’t beGRAMMAR GUY cause the sweet corn wasn’t in season yet, but because it’s graduation season and she had a very good reason to be bothered.

She immediately asked, “People don’t graduate college; they graduate from college … right?” I really can’t tell you how happy I am that people find me at the farmers market to ask me grammar questions.

And, I’ll go ahead and leave you with this cliffhanger: We’ll tackle why farmers market needs no apostrophe next week.

You would never say “I sat floor” or “He arrived Oklahoma,” would you? “I graduated” on its own is a complete sentence. So is “I sat” or “He arrived.”

The key here is that “graduated” in the sentence “I graduated from college” operates as an intransitive verb, which doesn’t allow or take a direct object. Here’s an example of a transitive verb sentence: Byron launched the cat into orbit. Here, “launched” is a transitive verb. Not only is it an active verb, but it also allows for at least one di-

rect object (in this instance, only one). The direct object here (cat) receives the action (launched) from the subject (Byron).

So, now let’s look at why “I graduated college” doesn’t work. For the sentence to pass muster, “college” would need to be a direct object. That would mean the direct object (college) receives the action (graduated) from the subject (I). This just doesn’t make sense.

Now, let’s look at why “I graduated from college” does work. Here, “graduated” functions as an intransitive verb; it doesn’t take a direct object. Fellow word nerds already recognize “from college” as a prepositional phrase in which “from” is the preposition and “college” is the prepositional object.

If you find yourself at a graduation open house this weekend, make sure the grad doesn’t say “I graduated high school.” If you do, let the money inside the graduation card slip out into your pocket and demand that he enroll in summer school.

Bungee jumping has become popular all around the world, but it started when a New Zealander emulated a dangerTRAVEL ous South Sea rite of passage.

For untold generations, young men on Pentecost Island have jumped from tall wooden towers with one end of a vine tied to their ankles and the other end to the tower. The vines are sized so that the jumper’s fall is instantly stopped just as he hits the ground. Those surviving the ordeal are welcomed into the society as “men.”

In the mid-1980s, A.J. Hackett decided to duplicate this so-called “land diving” experience with a less abrupt finale. He created a super-elastic cord (called “bungy” in New Zealand) and began jumping off New Zealand bridges. Finding the experience exhilarating and seeing its commercial potential, he jumped off the Eiffel Tower in 1987, landing him in jail and creating international interest.

In 1988, he opened the world’s first commercial bungy jumping site on the Kawarau

Gorge Suspension Bridge, 141 feet above the Kawarau River near Queenstown, New Zealand. The idea took off and adventure seekers from around the world began coming to New Zealand to literally jump off a bridge.

Today, many bungee jumping sites around the world are taller than the Kawarau Gorge site, but thousands of people each year come to where it all began.

Paying about $150 per jump, jumpers choose whether to have the cord sized to allow them to touch the water or to stop just above the water. Most begin the four-second or so free fall with their arms extended as if in flight, with first-time jumpers often screaming as they approach the river head first at 50 mph. When the jump is finished, the jumper is pulled from the air and hauled ashore on a small rubber boat.

Tomosynthesis, like a CT scan, takes images from multiple angles and uses computer processing to create a 3D image that a radiologist can use to look at a breast from various angles.

“Instead of having one view, you have a series of slices,� says Dr. Janalyn Ferguson, a radiologist at St.Vincent. “It’s kind of like you’re looking at a breast like slices of bread.�

Recent studies have shown that tomosynthesis can increase the cancer detection rate by about 20 to 25 percent.

It also decreases the likelihood that patients will be called back for additional imaging, as the limited number of views provided by mammograms can cause normal overlapping tissue to appear cancerous.

With tomosynthesis, doctors can look at about 50 images per breast instead of just a few. It may take a little longer for patients to get results, but physicians believe the many benefits are worth the wait.
