The COVID-19 pandemPANDEMIC ic that brought regular life to a halt in March didn’t spare Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation, but glimpses of normalcy are set to return soon.

The Waterpark expects Klitzing to open — late — for the season June 14, but the hundreds of lounge chairs surrounding the water features will be gone. The Monon Community Center is set to reopen May 24, but visits are open to members only and must be scheduled in advance. Summer camps are set to launch June 1, but capacity is slashed and all field trips have been canceled.

CCPR released its reopening plan on May 7. It aligns with the state’s reopening schedule presented May 1 by Gov. Eric Holcomb. Doctors, county health officials and other experts reviewed CCPR’s plan and presented feedback.

“Things are going to look different for the foreseeable future with reduced capacity,” CCPR Director Michael Klitzing said. “There are things you’re not going to be able to do this summer, and as much as we’d like to provide those opportunities, all the guidance is saying we need to wait.”

Playgrounds and splash pads Carmel parks have remained open throughout the pandemic, but playgrounds and restrooms have not. Both are expected to reopen May 24, along with the regularly scheduled opening of splash pads.

The skate park and dog park also are ex-

pected to open May 24.

Midtown Plaza and the portion of the Monon Trail between Main Street and Gradle Drive remain closed and do not have a reopening date planned.

Monon Community Center The Monon Community Center is scheduled to reopen at a significantly reduced capacity May 24, the same day the state is expected to enter Stage 3 of its reopening plan.

Initially, the facility will only be open to members, and they must make a reservation in advance. Fitness equipment has been spread throughout the building, including on the walking track, which will not be open for walking or running during the first phase of reopening.

A reduced schedule of group fitness classes will be offered in the gymnasium rather than the traditional classroom space to promote physical distancing.

Market forces, high standards increased hotel costs

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel City Council’s finance committee met May 12, 13 and 14 to review the factors that led to Hotel CITY NEWS Carmichael costing 46 percent more than estimated.

The council approved $40 million for the project, a 122-room boutique hotel in Marriott’s Autograph Collection, in 2017, but in January the city revealed that the final cost will be closer to $58 million.

The hotel, a public private partnership between the City of Carmel and developer Pedcor, is under construction in Carmel City Center. It was set to open in early May, but that has been delayed until at least Aug. 1 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Explaining a low estimate At the May 12 meeting, the committee reviewed the cost estimate process.

Carmel Redevelopment Commission Director Henry Mestetsky said the CRC was in a tough spot in 2017 attempting to determine how much to spend to consult professionals to refine the estimate before knowing if the controversial project would be approved by the city council.

“We can get a better judgment of what something costs if you want us to spend 10 times more than what the CRC spent toward something like this,” Mestetsky said.

“What if the CRC spent $400,000 to guess at something like this and then the council voted it down?”

Mestetsky, who became CRC director after the council approved the hotel funding, said the CRC used two primary consultants to create the estimate: Coury Hospitality, which specializes in hospitality management, and Shiel Sexton, the hotel’s construction manager.

Kevin Hunt, president and chief operating officer of Shiel Sexton, said his company was asked to come up with an estimate for construction costs using little more than the number of rooms and square footage of the hotel. He said they used the company’s recently completed Ironworks Hotel project as a baseline.

After the council approved the $28.5 million construction estimate, Mestetsky and the CRC’s consultants said several factors led to construction costs increasing, such as a trade war with China, tariffs and labor shortages.

Mestetsky said the cost of the hotel increased 10 to 15 percent when Mayor Jim Brainard directed the project to be publicly bid to increase transparency. Public bidding is more expensive because the process requires bidders to be bonded.

Paul Coury, chief executive officer of Coury Hospitality, said another factor that may have added to the cost increase is that Marriott officials set higher standards for Hotel Carmichael than some of the other hotels in the Autograph collection.

“The bar had to be somewhat higher than an average Autograph for Marriott to even approve this site,” Coury said. “We had a lot of pushback from Marriott, because they didn’t think Carmel was a size of city that could handle an Autograph.”

He said Marriott wanted Hotel Carmichael to be “one of the top Autographs,” but he said it is difficult to quantify how much the higher standards affected the final cost.

Striving to be among the best contributed to an increase in the building’s footprint.

“We looked at an average room. It didn’t feel special, so I said, ‘Can we kick this wall out so we can get a sofa in the room?’”

Coury said. “That may have added 7,000 square feet, but it was important to the design and the ultimate room value.”

Paving projects announced news@currentincarmel.com The City of Carmel Street Dept. has issued a list of paving projects for the 2020 summer construction season.

Improvements to CITY NEWS streets around the city have already begun. Many of the primary thoroughfares will be paved between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m to be less disruptive for drivers.

OBITUARY Jill Ann Cripe, 71, of Carmel, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 with Hospice in her daughter’s home. She was born on April 16, 1949 to Carl and Maxine “Mick” (Guntle) Leatherman in Huntington, Indiana.

Jill was a kindergarten teacher at Forest Dale Elementary School for over 20 years. She was a devoted teacher, enjoyed walking with her friends and beautiful summer days.

Her life path was making a difference in the lives of each student. Jill loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Chad Cripe (Laura), Christy Cripe (Mike Millsaps), Courtney Cripe (Josh Robinson), and

Connie Cripe; sister, Jan Sink (John); 12 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private services will be held. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Marion, Indiana.

Some elements of Hotel Carmichael go beyond what’s found in a typical boutique hotel, such as the Feinstein Club, an upscale lounge featuring live music. Hunt said the Feinstein Club was not part of the initial estimate. Instead, the space it would later occupy was included in the estimate as a common area. “(The Feinstein Club) isn’t what you have in a common lobby of a common boutique hotel,” Hunt said. “This is something unique.”

Knowing the final details for the hotel, Hunt said construction costs would likely have been estimated in 2017 at around $35 million rather than the $28.5 million. Construction costs ended up being $42 million.

Impacting the future The May 14 committee meeting focused on methods used to cover the increased cost of Hotel Carmichael and how those decisions could affect CRC finances.

The CRC covered the funding gap by mortgaging Monon Square and office space in the James Building, contributing $4.7 million from its operating budget and using $2 million in extra funds from a 2016 tax increment financing bond, steps all taken without council approval. Mestetsky said the council previously made it clear it would not approve more funds for the project.

Councilor Kevin “Woody” Rider said the council’s directive to not ask for more money did not mean it condoned the CRC seeking funds elsewhere.

“We were looking for that ($40 million) to be the top price,” Rider said.

Councilor Sue Finkam said she was concerned about how the measures to cover the cost will hamper the CRC’s future redevelopment efforts. Hotel revenues will be used to repay the CRC $12.5 million of the additional funds it identified for the project, but it is expected to take several years.

Mestetsky said covering the hotel funding gap means the CRC will have less cash available in the near future, which could affect land acquisition efforts, but he said in the long run it will be worth the investment.

The hotel needs to operate at 60 to 70 percent occupancy to cover its debt service.

But with the COVID-19 pandemic causing severe declines in travel and hotel stays, the future of the industry is unclear. If hotel revenues are unable to cover project debt, the CRC will pay the difference. Future hotel profits would be used to repay the CRC with interest.

The 10-month program aims to connect servant leaders with their communities. Participants are selected on experience, leadership potential and desire to serve the community. College graduation — Carmel residents Lea Washington and Haley Urbanowski have graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of music in Boston.

Berklee held its virtual commencement ceremony and concert the second weekend in May.

Teacher of the Year named

EDUCATION The Carmel Elementary School special education teacher was told by her husband she needed to end her Zoom call and come to the front door.

Biltimier received the surprise announcement May 7 of being named Carmel Clay Schools’ Stephen A. Backer Teacher of the Year. The honor and celebration included decorative yard signs, flowers, balloons and a car parade led by school resource officer Matthew Broadnax. Carmel Elementary Principal Megan Klinginsmith, Assistant Principal Rebecca Nickless, Supt. Michael Beresford and other school administrators celebrated her honor from a safe distance.

The honor was a bigger surprise because Biltimier didn’t know she was her school’s winner. The coronavirus pandemic closed the schools before an announcement was made. Normally, the CCS Teacher of the Year is announced at a banquet with all the indi-

“It was different but awesome,” said Biltimier, who is married with three children in Carmel schools. “I loved that my family could be a part of it, so that was special.”

Biltimier was a student teacher at Carmel High School in the spring of 1995. She started at CHS in January 1996 and spent the remainder of that school year there.

She then taught at Franklin Central Middle School from 1996 to 2003 before taking a break when she had children. She became a special education instructional assistant at Prairie Trace Elementary in 2012. In 2013, she joined Carmel Elementary.

“I have printed around 450 mask extenders and 100 (face) shields,” Thompson said.

“I have been using the Community East Hospital donation portal for contacting the PPE distributor.”

Konshak said CCPL has donated the face shields and mask extenders to local hospitals, including IU Health North and Community Health North hospital.

“People are very excited to get them,” he said. “I think it’s really nice that we were able to use some of the library’s resources during this time to assist the efforts of the health care community.”

Library eyes temporary sites

The Carmel Clay Public Library has requested a special use permit to temporarily relocate to the former RELOCATION Marsh building at 2140 E. 116th St. during building renovations, but city approval won’t guarantee the move is going to happen.

CCPL Director Bob Swanay said the former grocery store is at the top of his relocation list because of its size, central location and parking capacity.

“I haven’t made any secret that Marsh is the best location for us,” Swanay said. “It’s always been on our short list.”

The 81,300-square-foot building has been vacant since Marsh went out of business in 2017. It is listed for sale or lease through brokerage firm Eclipse Real Estate, which did not respond to a request for comment as of press time. Swanay said the library’s use of the space is contingent on what happens with building ownership.

If the Marsh building doesn’t work out, Swanay said he is considering another former grocery store: Earth Fare at 1392 S.

One of my staff asked if we could print those and distribute them to local hospitals,” said Peter Konshak, the library’s computer technology services manager.

Konshak said Kristy Thompson, the library’s digital media specialist, asked to print mask extenders and face shields.

Although CCPL and the Digital Media Lab have been closed to the public since March 15, the relocated 3-D printers have remained busy creating PPE. Thompson said each face shield takes approximately five hours to print, whereas each mask extender takes half an hour.

Swanay said he hopes a decision can be made soon.

“We have a little bit of time, because we’re still looking at fall construction,” he said.

The library’s $40 million renovation project includes more space for programs, the addition of a parking garage and several other upgrades. The duration of the project will depend on whether a temporary library location can be found.

The Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals Hearing Officer is scheduled to review the special permit request at 4:30 p.m. May 26.

Brainard: Business diversity good for Carmel

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard expects Hamilton County to pull through the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ECONOMIC “Places like Hamilton County IMPACT are mainly going to be OK,” he said. “It’s going to be (tougher for) the cities with one major manufacturing facility or one major company.

(In Carmel), we have over 125 corporate BRAINARD headquarters and we are not dominated by any one of them. None have more than 2,000 employees.”

Out of those 125-plus corporate headquarters, Brainard said most are allowing their employees to work from home.

The city owns its water and sewage companies, and, despite many businesses being temporarily closed, water usage is up 10 to 12 percent compared to the same time last year.

Brainard expects the main effect from the pandemic to be the food, beverage and hotel tax income. Five percent of the city’s budget comes from those dollars.

“Assume we are off 30 percent, that’s only 1.5 percentage points (of our budget),” Brainard said. “We started the year with over $100 million in cash and over $50 million unencumbered or unappropriated cash in various reserve accounts.”

Brainard said the city may have to dip into its reserve accounts but he doesn’t expect it to happen. Although the budget may see a decrease from the food, beverage and hotel tax, property tax collections have exceeded last year’s total.

“We are watching it very carefully,” Brainard said. “We want to continue to spend money on projects the city council believes important to the community because that provides jobs to people and puts money into the economy. The diversity of our business is really good for Carmel.”

Hamilton County cities, including Carmel, don’t have individual unemployment number breakdowns. In Hamilton County, data was provided from March 21 to April 18. During the week ending March 21, unemployment numbers were 2,247, a 3,985 percent increase from the same week in 2019. During the week ending March 28, the figure was 3,554, a 6,868 percent increase. During the week ending April 4, the total was 3,756, a 4,120 percent increase. For the week ending April 11, the number was 3,618, a 6,478 percent increase. And for the week ending April 18, the figure was 2,548, a 3,343 percent increase.

Total unemployment claims by Hamilton County residents for the first quarter of 2020 were 7,296. Claims made by employers in the county were 5,995. The top occupational groups filing for unemployment included those in the food service industry, office and administrative support, management, sales, construction, transportation, arts, sports and education, among other occupations.

Raised crosswalks could become more common

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The City of Carmel is spending $203,000 to install raised pedestrian crosswalks surrounding a roundabout CITY NEWS built four years ago.

The project at Range Line Road and Carmel Drive has the intersection fully shut down through at least May 22 with partial closures planned for several weeks after that. It is part of a project updating the streetscape along Range Line Road.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said similar pedestrian crossings installed elsewhere on Range Line Road indicated they would be a good fit at the intersection. Raised crosswalks are expected to be included with any future roundabouts on Range Line Road. The city does not have plans to retrofit any other roundabouts with them at this time.

“We’ve built more roundabouts than anyone in the country, and we don’t have a lot of other cities to look to when we learn from things we do or could’ve done better,” Brainard said. “As we started to put raised crosswalks in other places on Range Line Road, we realized it was so much easier for the pedestrians to cross.”

Carmel spokesperson Dan McFeely said it’s unclear how much it would have cost to install the pedestrian crossings when the intersection was converted to a roundabout in 2016. He said raised crosswalks were not included when bidding out the project and that construction costs have changed since

then.

“We have seen an increase in construction costs since the original crosswalks along Range Line Road were installed,” McFeely said. “This is due to the quantity of construction work that is available to contractors due to an increase in both state and other municipal construction funding and the amount of private development work that is readily available at this time.”

The intersection is near redevelopment projects expected to soon bring more pedestrian traffic to the area. The Proscenium mixed-use development, set to open later this year, is at the intersection’s northwest corner, and The Corner mixed-use development is planned on the southwest corner of Range Line Road and 116th Street. The Range Line Road and 116th Street signalized intersection is scheduled to be converted to a roundabout in 2021.

Brainard said crosswalks at stoplights can give pedestrians a false sense of safety and that the city is constantly gathering data to make intersection crossings safer for pedestrians at intersections.

“Especially in double-lane roundabouts, it’s sometimes difficult to get traffic to slow to the 15 to 18 miles per hour that it should slow to,” Brainard said. “Raised crosswalks help do that. Safety in roundabouts is all about speed. That’s why we’ve virtually eliminated fatalities at our intersections.”

Brainard said the COVID-19 pandemic is a good time to do the crosswalk project because fewer cars are on the roads.

Organizers have canPANDEMIC celed the annual Independence Day parade and CarmelFest Has Talent competition, which takes place on both days of the July 3-4 festival.

“While we regret having to make these difficult decisions, we feel it is in the best interest of our patrons and festival participants to place their safety as our first priority,” CarmelFest Chairman James Bednarski said.

The fireworks show is still set for 9:45 p.m. July 4. CarmelFest organizers expect to release information in the coming weeks on where and how the show can be seen.

The War Memorial for Hamilton County Fallen Heroes in Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville will be reRESTORATION stored beginning this week. The project was bid for $46,000 and is expected to take six weeks.

Air Force veteran Bill Doss said the restoration will include pouring a new foundation and walkway, replacing the tops of the urns and cleaning stones and remounting them on the new foundation.

“The memorial is for Hamilton County, and it has the fallen names of soldiers who fought for World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War,” said Doss, the webmaster for the Hamilton County Veterans Corp. “When I met with Mark Heirbrandt, the county commissioner, at the end of last year, we talked about the fact that the stones were crumbling and the base was crumbling.”

In the future, Doss wants to add the names of fallen Hamilton County soldiers who fought in World War I and the Persian Gulf War. Some Carmel restaurants reopen dining rooms, others wait a bit longer

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com As a member of the Carmel City Council and a restaurant owner, Adam Aasen knows the challenges all restaurants have faced during the coronavirus COVER STORY pandemic.

On March 16, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb ordered restaurants to halt dine-in service to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but they were allowed to reopen in most of the state May 11 at 50 percent capacity. Many restaurants reopened May 11, but several others decided to wait a bit longer, with some not reopening at all.

Aasen is co-owner of Donatello’s Italian Restaurant in Carmel, which reopened May 11.

“We are eager to get back, but we want to do it smartly,” said Aasen, whose restaurant offers dinner hours for now. “Reopening our economy is not like flipping on a light switch. It’s got to be done slowly and it’s got to be done strategically.”

Aasen said Donatello’s will not only follow the governor’s reopening guidelines but will go beyond to keep employees and customers safe.

“We’ll be reducing our capacity even beyond 50 percent,” he said. “Tables will be spread out at least 6 feet, probably more.

State guidelines discourage gatherings in common areas, such as waiting for a table, so Aasen recommends reservations.

Donatello’s private room, used for private parties, is being used for extra dining space to spread guests out even farther.

For those still uncomfortable dining in a restaurant, Donatello’s still offers carryout.

Aasen said restaurants will have a tough time for the next several months.

“We have to rebuild consumer confidence so people feel safe going out again,” Aasen said. “Then we may see people with less money. Some people are making just as much money as they were, so they are

Hoersdig said the Carmel restaurant offered carryout for the first week after dining rooms were closed.

“Those revenue numbers spoke pretty loudly, so we decided to learn more about how this process was going to go and focus on when we have the opportunity to have folks in the buildings,” Hoersdig said.

Kevin Paul, owner of Danny Boy Beer Works and Brockway Pub in Carmel, reopened his restaurants May 11. Both restaurants have outdoor seating.

“There is no bar service, and hopefully we can get back to normal fairly soon,” Paul said.

Both of Paul’s Carmel restaurants have offered takeout with food and packaged beer and wine service. He described takeout sales as miserable but said some of the regular customers at both places have been buying.

“It’s been worth it for that reason, and I wanted to make sure I could keep my managers employed,” he said.

Brockway is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Danny Boy is open for dinner every day and for lunch Thursdays through Sundays.

Danny Boy has room for 100 people at 50 percent seating inside.

“We have a huge patio, so that is 60 or 70 folks even if we spread out,” Paul said.

“Brockway has room for 30 or 40 people outside.”

Anthony’s Chophouse owner Anthony Lazzara reopened his restaurant May 14 with updated menus.

“The reason we are waiting is to not only retrain staff and teach the new menus, but also to see how the beginning of the week goes and public reaction,” Lazzara said before reopening.

Muldoon’s announced it planned to delay its opening to May 18.

“While we really miss all of you, we need to make sure we are navigating the inside dining re-opening in the safest and most effective way possible,” it announced on social media. “We would like to take the extra time and see how this next week goes before we dive in. We hope you all understand.

The safety of our staff and our customers are more important to us than the sales.”

Citing minimizing risks for staff and customers, Dooley O’Toole’s has decided not to reopen yet but will continue curbside carryout.

Normal change

Now is the time to make end-of-life decisions

Commentary by Terry Anker Fifty is the new 40. Orange is the new black. Thick is the new thin. We’ve all heard some variation of the claim that what was once the standard has been effectively and immediately replaced by a new and improved model. Coke was to be New Coke. That attempt at modifying the syrupy concoction proved so unpopular that it was ultimately retracted by the soft drink giant. Still, they revisited the wisdom of claiming the king to be dead when they worked to nudge Diet Coke with Coke Zero.

Sure, things change. The child becomes the parent. And the student becomes the master. But are we all too eager to claim the transition complete before the assumption is tested by the most grueling of standards — time? Axioms develop slowly. Well, they should.

We humans have flourished for eons precisely because we are adroit at determining safe and practiced patterns and staying within them. Every child can tell you why a little pig shouldn’t build his house out of straw or twigs but only of bricks! It is a dangerous world. More than one big, bad blowhard will do their best to knock the house down.

So today, we are told of “new” normals. That everything has changed. That we will never be the same. Perhaps.

These times test the foundations of our nation and its institutions. But are we humans really that different?

Are we evolved? Or do we still long for power over others? Do we still seek protection for our own and advantage for our tribe? Do we still laugh, love and obsess? Is our sense of self-awareness only temporary, as it has proven to be with so many crises before? In the long scope of history, when is a “new” normal determined to be the new normal?

Curse of the 2020 Mother’s Day quarantine Commentary by Danielle Wilson Quarantine has messed me up so badly that I completely forgot to prepare for Mother’s Day. A rookie mistake that HUMOR resulted in an epic fail where I was forced to spend MD with my family in the house during questionable weather, without even an inkling of how I would enjoy it.

Because let’s be real. Partners and children are generally unreliable when it comes to planning magical moments. I learned long ago that if I wanted to have at least a shot at a good Mother’s Day, I had to clearly articulate my expectations, have several back-up itineraries and establish the ability to call a redo should the proverbial or actual schtick hit the fan (which reminds me, if you’re a mom of little ones, fuggedaboutit.

When your world includes diapers, naptime and/or sippy cups, MD is a game-time decision, at best. You can’t control projectile vomiting, night terrors, potty accidents,

surprise rashes or neediness, so best to table your hopes and dreams and give it another five years before you attempt a real Mother’s Day celebration. Sorry).

Usually, I plan an eight-hour all-about-me extravaganza that includes, but is not limited to, brunch with the peeps, consignment shopping and movie theater popcorn, but stupid coronavirus has robbed me of those guilty pleasures. And because this year’s MD was cold and windy rather than warm and sunny, sunbathing with a rum punch was also not feasible. I guess the rum punch part was, but why bother? I didn’t even take off my pajamas!

This Mother’s Day, more than any other, I really needed a solid plan. Curse you, quarantine! Peace out.

Editor, As I write this letter, Hamilton County has 956 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 84 people have died of the virus. I am fairly certain that many of us who are housebound have been thinking about our advance directives and endof-life health care decisions.

Advance directives are necessary if we cannot speak for ourselves. They require appointing a health care proxy to help medical providers honor our wishes for our care at the end of life, and they require thoughtful discussions about what we want and do not want ahead of the unforeseen. By taking charge of our end-of-life care wishes now, fewer doctors and loved ones will be forced to make heart-wrenching, life-and-deathdecisions, not knowing what we want.

Sadly, 33 million Americans have lost their jobs in these eight weeks since the pandemic began. As a result, many individuals cannot afford the cost of a professional to assist them in end-of-life planning.

There are some free resources that can help. Compassion and Choices, a nonprofit end-of-care advocacy organization, has a free online COVID-19 toolkit at CompassionAndChoices.org as well as online webinars at CompassionAndChoices.org/webinarseries.

Be smart — wash your hands Commentary by Dr. Jeremy Ciano During this time of uncertainty, hopefully we can give you a little piece of mind and check some worries off your VISION list. Contact lenses are safe when worn properly. The two most important things to remember when dealing with your contact lenses are to wash your hands and be smart.

The first is obvious, but it needs to be reinforced over and over again. Proper hand washing is the key. Wash for 20-plus seconds with warm, soapy water, followed by drying your hands with a clean, lint-free paper towel before putting your contacts in. Then again, after you insert your lenses, you need to rewash your hands. It’s worth the extra few seconds for your own health and the safety of others.

Second, be smart. Rubbing our eyes and not washing our hands is probably the biggest unconscious culprit. We need to be obsessed with hand washing after touching our face. When was the last time you threw

out your contact lens case and got a new one? What about throwing out your lenses?

Are you disposing of your contacts on their proper wear cycle? This is not the time to be over-wearing or stretching out your contacts. Are you truly cleaning your lenses properly or just dropping them into their case? Rubbing the lenses is key to cleaning them each night. Are you using fresh solution each day or simply topping off the case?

If you find yourself guilty of some of these, it’s time to make a change in your contact lens hygiene habits. In fact, if you haven’t already, this is the perfect time to switch to daily disposable contacts. They are fresh, clean and sterile every day. It doesn’t get much healthier than that.

Tech quickly measures temperatures in large groups

“It’s a thermal-based PANDEMIC camera system combined with a black body device that gives a way to calibrate the image sensors against the background,” said Stephe Blansette, Intelligent Systems founder and president. “There is a lot of technology coming Blansette out right now that isn’t a two-pieced thermal scanner, so it’s not nearly as accurate as this product is (measuring body temperature). Blansette said the system sounds an alarm or sends an email when it detects a high temperature.

“You want to pretty quickly pull that person aside because of the high risk and do a secondary screening,” Blansette said.

Blansette, who said he also would work with city and county governments if there is interest in the system, said the technology is fairly new in the United States.

“I believe we’re the first to deploy it here in Indiana,” he said. “We’ve had good success with it so far.”

Blansette said he didn’t want to go into detail about his company’s clients, but IU Health has already publicized it is using the company’s system. Manufacturing companies are other potential clients.

Businesses can use the system to determine who should be at work, according to the company policy’s on temperatures.

Blansette said the best way to use it is to have someone monitor the screens so they can act quickly on any high risk.

Blansette said large event venues are potential clients for the technology to be used at entry points.

“You can’t just manually scan people one at a time,” he said. “This technology allows you to move a high number of people with a high degree of accuracy through the entry.”

The average system price starts at approximately $23,000, depending on the features.

“It also does facial recognition,” Blansette said. “If you have an employe who has made a threat, we can put that image into a database, and the camera will recognize them any time they walk into a building as long as there is a camera in that area.”

Civic Theatre’s 2020-21 season centers on overcoming challenges

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Civic Theatre’s 2020-21 season will bring something old, something new and something unused.

PERFORMANCES “Bringing in the titles we were not able to produce from last season and adding ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ and ‘The Color Purple’ gives us a season that really speaks to overcoming challenges,” Civic Theatre Executive Artistic Director Michael J. Lasley said. “Even in the darkness, there is light and eventually redemption, even when circumstances are dire. We hope it’s prophetic for our own story as well.”

The recently announced season includes two shows, “Matilda the Musical” and “A Few Good Men,” from the 2019-20 season that were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. “A Few Good Men” was set to open March 13, but three hours before the curtain was supposed to open at The Tarkington, it was announced Carmel’s Center for the Performing Arts would close because of the state’s gathering limitations. “Matilda” was supposed to open April 24. Lasley said he hopes most of the cast for both shows can return.

“I think it’s inevitable that a few people won’t be able to return,” he said. “But for the most part, we believe we’ll get the majority to return. Peoples’ lives change and conflicts arise, but we look forward to making roles in ‘A Few Good Men’ and ‘Matilda’ available to everyone that missed the opportunity to perform last season.

“Some of our young performers in ‘Matilda the Musical’ are going to grow, that is certain. But we’ve assured them that there is a place for them in the show if their schedules allow.”

The 2021 portion of the schedule follows with “The Diary of Anne Frank,” Feb. 5-20; “A Few Good Men,” March 12-28; and “The Color Purple,” April 30 to May 15.

“This is our first production of ‘The Color Purple,’” Lasley said, “We are excited to make this performance opportunity to our African American performers and to make this amazing and uplifting story available to our audiences.”

The Jr. Civic Musical will be “Frozen Jr.” in June 2021, and the Young Artists

Program’s performance will be “Saturday Night Fever” in July 2021. Both shows were scheduled for this summer before being postponed.

“It is our hope that we can present the entirety of our announced season to our loyal patrons as well as new audiences,” Lasley said. “However, we will continue to monitor the ever-changing landscape caused by the global pandemic. We will pursue and adjust our plans for the season while always being guided by the health and safety of our employees, volunteers and patrons.”

Lasley said he hopes that social distancing will be reduced by October but that Civic Theatre is working on contingency plans in the event it is still in place.

“So much changes so fast during this difficult time that we’re trying to stay flexible and creative,” he said.

CSO’s schedule has emphasis on women

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com When the Carmel Symphony Orchestra takes the Palladium stage, Music Director Janna Hymes is certain of one MUSIC thing.

“We’re going to be bursting with happiness,” she said. “It’s been quite difficult not to finish this season. While we’ve been making videos connecting with our audience and all of our supporters, it’s been quite difficult physically to have some energy when we aren’t in the same room making music together.”

Hymes announced the 2020-21 “Hope Renewed” schedule May 9 on the CSO Facebook page. The performances are usually held at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“It’s our 45th anniversary. When I program the season, there is an emphasis on women, so we have wonderful women composers and women soloists we’re bringing in this season,” Hymes said. “It’s going to be interesting and I think eye-opening because some of these women really are the voice of classical and orchestral music, so I think that is going to be really fun for our audience to hear.”

The Masterworks Series begins Oct. 10 with “Hope Renewed” featuring Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville Overture,” and pieces by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Mozart.

The Masterworks schedule continues on the following dates: Nov. 14, Brahms Requiem; Jan. 9, 2021, Edgar Meyer in Concert; Feb. 13, A Taste of Europe; and March 13, Musical Tales. Dance Kaleidoscope will join CSO for Musical Tales.

“The Brahms Requiem will feature Rick Sowers leading the choir, and Rick is retiring from Anderson University at the end of the (2020-21) school year,” Hymes said.

“The orchestra has been collaborating with him way before I joined, so that is going to be an exciting collaboration. So, we hope school is in session so the students can prepare like normal. There is a lot of waitand-see here. We hope we will be performing in the hall like normal.”

ATI to begin 2020-21 season with Patsy Cline tribute

THEATER “It’s just the right amount of humor and thought-provoking material,” said Collins, an ATI co-founder with Judy Fitzgerald and Don Farrell.

The season, which was announced on ATI’s Facebook page May 12, opens with “Always … Patsy Cline” from Sept. 4 to 27, which ATI presented in 2013. The ATI shows are typically held in The Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Fitzgerald will reprise her role as Cline and Collins as Louise Seger, a devoted fan.

“In general, a remount is a bit easier if the same cast returns, which it is,” Collins said. “It just happens to be on the heels of the pandemic. We picked to remount the show because of its popularity the last time we presented it. It’s a small-cast show with a big presence. Patsy Cline was a huge talent and this show packs a wallop with all her hits.”

Farrell said the show was selected in part because it is a smaller show to keep costs low.

“It is added fortuitous that it will help us ease into our season with the pandemic going on,” he said.

In addition, ATI will present “Lombardi” and “The Big Bang” for the first time.

“Lombardi” is a play based on the life of the late Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, which had its Broadway debut in October 2010. Collins said ATI has wanted to present the six-person play for a few years.

It runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 22.

“We have shows on the back burner every season,” Collins said. “Just like Patsy Cline, Vince Lombardi was a huge presence. We hope the play will appeal to people across the board, younger and older, athletes and artists.”

Collins and Farrell described “The Big Bang” as hilarious and a perfect show for the third slot. The comedy runs from Jan. 29 to Feb. 21, 2021. “‘The Big Bang’ is a hysterical hit that ran off Broadway and will tickle the funny bone of any theater lover with this zany, off-thewall musical comedy,” Farrell said. “If our patrons loved our past productions of ‘The 39 Steps’ or ‘Murder for Two,’ they will love ‘The Big Bang.’”

“Damn Yankees” had been slated to close the 2019-20 season with a four-week run, starting April 24, before the pandemic closed the Center for the Performing Arts. It again is scheduled to close the season from April 30 to May 23, 2021.

The entire cast has been invited back.

THE SOLUTION 1. A portico was constructed over the front door, supported by six columns. Not only does it provide a beautiful focal point for the home’s exterior, it is larger than the previous covered doorway, so it is practical, too!

2. The new crescent-shaped patterned concrete stairs are flanked by metal handrails, which perfectly frame the beautiful new French double doors.

3. The tongue-and-groove ceiling is stained white pine. New light fixtures and oversized planters complete the transformation.

THE CHALLENGE This home was built in 1995 and is in the Avian Glen neighborhood on the east side of Carmel. The homeowners were looking to update the straightforward brick façade with architectural details to provide more of a “wow” factor.
