Fund open to aid Schoolcraft family

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel All First Merchants Bank locations in Hamilton County are currently accepting donations to a fund benefiting the family of a Carmel High School employee who died from injuries sustained during a recent accident at the school.

Westfield resident Rick Schoolcraft, 52, passed away May 8 at Wishard Memorial Hospital, unable to overcome the effects of a fire on CHS grounds May 5. Schoolcraft was mowing outside the school’s Natatorium when the lawnmower he was using malfunctioned and caught Schoolcraft fire, engulfing Schoolcraft in flames in the process. Four CHS students were among the group who batted and extinguished the flames using t-shirts, but two students on the scene estimated it took up to three minutes to put out the fire. Schoolcraft was said to be in serious condition at Wishard before passing away three days after the incident.

To aid Schoolcraft’s family with its sudden loss, the Rick Schoolcraft Donation Fund has been established at First Merchants Bank. Those wishing to contribute to the fund can do so by going to any First Merchants location in Hamilton County or mailing a check made out to “Rick Schoolcraft Donation Fund” and mailing it to the Carmel branch, 1 East Carmel Drive.

The fund opened last Thursday with First Merchants Bank and Current Publishing making the first two donations, respectively. Ryan Mooney, Banking Center Manager and Assistant Vice President of the Carmel First Merchants branch, said the bank strives to play a role in the community, and this is an opportunity for it to do so.

“If it has to do with our community and helping someone in need, we like to get involved,” he said.

David Stowers, who works in CCS’ business office, will be in charge of the donation fund and will ultimately decide when the money provided by local businesses, organizations and individuals will be removed from the fund and presented to the Schoolcraft family.

Schoolcraft’s funeral was last Thursday afternoon. He worked as a grounds keeper at CHS for 13 years. He also served in the United States Army Reserve and enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family during his spare time. He is survived by his mother Freida, wife Kris, sons Shayne and Jesse, daughters Victoria and Cassie, two brothers, a sister and nine grandchildren.

“Rick Schoolcraft was a wonderful person and a very hard worker,” said CCS Superintendent Jeff Swensson in an e-mail. “Everyone who knew him felt that he was one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. We miss him tremendously.”

Local salon contributes to Gulf cleanup

By Brandon Bowman Current in Carmel Local salons are doing their part to help with the cleanup effort in the Gulf of Mexico by donating hair to a group that uses it to soak up the oil. Matter of Trust is a group that works with salons all over the country to get their discarded hair and nylons.

Christie Wright of Fine Lines salon in Carmel thinks they will have two trash bags a week to donate at the salon.

“Usually what we do normally is just throw it out.

Organic seems to be the trend, and I thought it was a great way to help the environment,” Wright said.

“A lot of people, I feel, are not aware of this,” Lee said “It’s better to donate the hair then have it sitting in a landfill.”

Lee and Wright both attended the Aveda Fredric’s Institute in Indianapolis.

“They always taught us to be environmentally conscious. So this is something I’ve always known as a hair dresser, but you see a lot of people coming around to the idea of working that way.” Wright said.

It is our position that the people of Hamilton County are lucky to be served by some of the finest men in uniform anywhere in the state. On May 5, law enforcement and political leaders from around the county gathered to show support for these brave men and women who have put their lives on the line day in and day out to help serve and protect and who paid the ultimate price for their service with their lives.

While it can be hard to appreciate police officers as they serve in the daily duties of traffic control and dispute resolution, remember that all interactions are not so commonplace as a ticket for speeding. More routinely, they are exposed to more significant law breakers. They put their lives on the line to make our streets safer. It’s hard to imagine a more noble life.

So next time we are speaking to an officer, let’s remember to show them the respect they deserve both for their uniform and for their willingness to make a sacrifice on our behalf. Absent that thin blue line, our lives would be dramatically different -- and not in a way that most would enjoy.

Don't drink the water

It is our position that British Petroleum should have been far more prepared than it seems it was for an oil spill such as the one that followed the tragedy on its Gulf-based pumping platform. While BP is making efforts to clean up the spill, we believe the company’s lack of adequate planning may have contributed to the looming disaster for sea life and our shores. With an adequate plan in place, could the company have reacted more quickly to the disaster? We believe so.

The domes that have been put in place to contain the oil should have been built and waiting for such an eventuality. This is not a unique event, and BP executives should have taken all the necessary precautions to contain an oil spill as quickly as possible. However, our federal government must guard against overreaction and throwing fuel prices back above the $4 mark. Consuming resources is a messy (but profitable) business. Care must balance cost. But likewise, cost must balance care. Make BP pay the price, as appropriate, but do not summarily harm the larger industry in some retaliatory strike against big oil or for the radical left.

Even more concerning, do we really want to become a nation of chirping sparrows hungrily consuming all that is spewed by the reigning profits of the day – regardless if Beck or Blitzer, Maddow or Matthews?

Readers’ views Editor: I have to wonder: Did you receive any negative feedback regarding the Current’s coverage of the referendum? As a regular reader of this paper, I must admit I was a bit disappointed that both letters to the editor in the last issue lauded what I found to be lopsided coverage.

However, moving beyond the paper’s stance, what I found even more irksome was the published comment that proponents of the referendum were “using the students of the school district as props at the polling sites to play on the emotions of the taxpayers” (“Current’s referendum coverage should be applauded,” May 11).

As one of these so-called “props,” I would like your readers to know that we students who worked the polls volunteered our time for a cause we believed in and had thoroughly discussed with our parents.

For anyone to assume or suggest that we students blindly devoted our time May 4 is irresponsible and, quite frankly, personally offensive.

In the end, we can analyze the margin of victory and voter turnout all we want and dwell on the “could haves” of the case, but I think the citizens of Carmel have spoken. And they say “yes.”

How can that be? I understand that many Americans choose to read periodicals, newspapers and Web sites. In fact, the bulk of my reading is done that way. But can we be wellrounded without the book?

What is it about reading that puts us so ill-atease? I don’t believe we have become so lazy as a society that we can only digest information that has been heavily processed by the good folks from Hollywood. Even more concerning, do we really want to become a nation of chirping sparrows hungrily consuming all that is spewed by the reigning prophets of the day – regardless if Beck or Blitzer, Maddow or Matthews?

What happens when we outsource our thinking? Books require thought. They demand processing. Encourage their use. We’ll all be the better for it.

By Terry Anker Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children’s and family not-for-profit literacy organization in the United States. But I mostly remember it as an incredible advertising effort from the 1970s. (Do you remember “Reading Is Fundamental?”)

It struck me at the time that it was abundantly clear we should read. And I assumed adults read throughout their lives. In my house, my mother was an inveterate reader: There was always some new tome awaiting a stolen moment upon which to focus. And Dad carried on most of his conversations with me while looking through the local newspaper.

Yet I was surprised to learn recently that a very small percentage of us continue to read books into adulthood. In fact, around a quarter of high-school educated kids, once adults, ever read another book. Even more surprisingly, those of us who’ve achieved a college education will note that about 40 percent of us have not picked up a book since that final senior exam.

Editor: Now that the school referendum has been approved, I would encourage school officials to keep Spanish in the curriculum for kindergarten and the lower grades. Younger children seem to have an easier time learning a second language.

With so many Spanish-speaking people – legal and illegal – in the United States, and with Mexico as our southern border, speaking and understanding Spanish is more a necessary life skill than an esoteric course for a grade.

I have long been embarrassed by the fact that so many Americans speak only one language,

while so many Hispanics and Europeans can speak two or more.

Many will argue that we are an English speaking nation and should stay so. But if I have heard correctly, one in six voters in America is Hispanic. And some demographers forecast that Hispanics in future decades will comprise the majority race. If that is so, we should give our children and grandchildren the multi-language skills they will need to function in present and future America – and the world.

By Danielle Wilson My 8-year-old daughter came home the other day in tears. She had just been to her first talent show rehearsal, and the practice had not gone well. At least in her mind.

“Our music didn’t work (sob), we messed up on the words (sniffle) and NO (sob) BODY (sniffle) CLA-APPED (all out weeping).”

After I gave her some there, there’s and talked her back from the ledge, she elaborated. “The microphone made my voice sound weird, and being on stage made my tummy go wooshy. I don’t want to do it anymore!” OK then, quit.

But wait, Wilsons aren’t quitters! Besides the fact that she made a commitment, and we try and teach our children it’s important to follow through on commitments, I want her to go through this process so she can gain confidence in public speaking. And who knows, maybe even have fun while she’s doing it.

Unfortunately, it’s hard for me to understand her fears, as I am a closet starlet (Lights! Camera! Danielle!), though whenever I have to speak or perform (my sister-in-law and I do a killer lounge singer act), I need to do shots of Immodium just to keep out of the pot. But I know that if I can just push through the anxiety, I’ll do more than simply survive the experience, I’ll truly enjoy it.

So we’ve talked to her about how feeling like you’re going to vomit is natural; that almost everyone gets nervous before having to stand in front of a big group of people. In fact, the almighty Internet ranks public speaking as the second most common phobia, after the fear of spiders. Her dad, for example, has struggled for most of his life with giving talks and speeches.

He dropped classes in college if an oral report was required

and met his public speaking requirement by completing a correspondence class for which students sent tape-recorded speeches in for a grade. Tape. Recorded. Speeches. (And we wonder why our college graduates don’t have the skill sets to compete in a global economy?) His fear of speaking also prevented him from making toasts at his siblings’ weddings and has caused full-blown panic attacks at work prior to meetings in which he was to present.

He has only recently been able to conquer some of that fear with the help of beta blockers and behavioral baby-step therapy.

(Way to go, Doo!) But I often wonder how he ended up this way and what kinds of steps we can take as parents to make sure our kids don’t follow in his anxiety-ridden footsteps.

As of today, five days before the big show, she is back on board with performing. She has to get through a dress rehearsal, which may send her packing, but by that time, her name will already be in the program and she’ll be locked in. Her brothers continue to make fun of her, but as we have pointed out, they are too scaredy cat to even try, so their opinions are poo.

More than anything, I want her to enjoy this experience. I would hate for this to be the moment in her life when she decides that she’s never ever ever going to speak in front of people again; that she develops her father’s phobia and misses out. Because I expect at least one of my kiddos to inherit my love of the stage and to provide good quality entertainment at family functions after I’m too old to don a beaded gown and belt out a Barbra Streisand number. Carmel grieves the loss of a true hero COMMENTARY

By Jeff Worrell The sad news about the death of Rick Schoolcraft hit me hard. It was not only tragic news, but a harsh reminder to all of us about how fragile life can be. Take just a moment with me to pause and appreciate a man who worked for us as a member of the Carmel Clay School Corporation.

When I say, “worked for us,” I mean it literally, as I learned Oct. 13, 2004. That is the day I had the honor to shake Mr. Schoolcraft’s hand and present him with a Chamber Champion Award.

I remember the day well, because Rick’s story was genuine, and he was so humble. The room was crowded with Chamber members.

Superintendant Barbara Underwood was also on hand, along with Mayor Brainard. Together, all of us heard the incredible story of Rick Schoolcraft and the superhuman effort he made to help a student athlete.

The CHS cross country coach was on hand to tell the story about how one of his young female charges approached him one day in absolute panic. The crisis started when her parents purchased an expensive pair of custom foot orthotics that made it possible for her to train and run without pain. The orthotics were a key to her success and that of the team.

As best as she could remember, she must have

accidentally put her treasured orthotics in the trash the day before. Upon hearing this, Coach Koeppen instinctively knew her orthotics would never be seen again. He used the moment to present the situation as a life lesson about responsibility, hoping to teach and soften the loss.

Yet, he still left a note for the cleaning crew, just in case someone might have come across the orthotics and turned them in.

Mr. Schoolcraft heard about the emergency, coaxed fellow custodian Mike Walton into helping him, and together, they headed to the garbage dumpsters behind the school. Rick was not asked or ordered to do this. He simply cared.

And just like the last scene of a tear-jerking, heartwarming movie with hero’s happy ending, imagine Rick climbing out of the dumpster, holding the race-winning orthotics high above his head. The room became true admirers of Rick Schoolcraft that day, and I am heartbroken for our loss. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, his friends and our community as a whole. We have tragically lost a treasure that can never be replaced.

Shop Talk A&D District traffic picking up

By Jason “Hogjawz” Peek The talk in the shop this week focused on the economy. I talked to a few business owners about how they were doing and found that the economy in the Arts & Design District is coming around. I have also noticed business picking up.

The foot traffic here has more than doubled in the last five years. The events here are getting bigger and receiving more recognition than before. The buildings are going up like they are going out of style, and the restaurants, from what I see, are getting busier and busier.

Soon, a few of the places here will have outdoor patios for dining, and I happen to love that. I think that will increase business even more in the warmer season.

We have a new concrete pad poured for a new statue that rotates. Now, I don’t know if that means it spins or they rotate it once a year or something, but it sounds unique. I hear a load of complaining about what happens in the future with all the buildings, statues and other projects going on, but as I have said in a few of my articles, most of us get our informa-

tion from word of mouth or a popular paper that is known for not putting out the whole truth.

By the way, freedom of speech doesn’t mean you make up stories and deceive the public; it means you have the right to express your opinion. Until proven otherwise, we at the shop think the mayor and city employees are doing great.

Remember we all love to complain; it’s human nature. But be thankful we live in a city that constantly builds and tries to improve. Come on down, over or up to Main St. and check out your city and what it offers.

I think you’ll enjoy it – especially that cool barber shop where I work.

Brothers John and Jim McKenzie started their business, Homes

by McKenzie, in 1993. Jim said home building is “in their blood,” as they grew up working for their father and grandfather who achieved success in the industry years earlier. But as they do with their customers today, John and Jim took the blueprint created by their relatives, made their own adjustments and founded a company specializing in creating unique, beautiful houses and providing buyers with their dream homes.

Homes by McKenzie specializes in building custom homes, primarily for active empty nesters in Hamilton County, Zionsville and some areas in northern Indianapolis. The company’s homes can be found in several of the area’s most notable home communities, including the Bridgewater Club in Westfield and the Village of West Clay in Carmel. In addition to being in some of the county’s top communities, many McKenzie homes are on or near lakes, golf courses, woodlands and other desirable locations, all for the purpose of serving the active empty-nester niche.

“That came about because we saw that that market was not really being served by anyone in Indianapolis,” John said.

“Little did we know we were catching the beginning of a big wave.”

Decades ago, their grandfather’s business flourished in Lafayette by building homes for rapidly expanding military families after World War II. He rode the initial wave of the baby boom on his way to the National Association of Home Builders’ hall of fame. Now, as many of those baby boomers are entering retirement, their children fully grown, Homes by McKenzie aims to provide them with a dream home suitable for their ideal lifestyles.

“For some of these people, it will be the last home they ever own,” Jim said. “If we’re building their last home, we want to give them exactly what they want.”

Before building, the brothers meet with prospective buyers and discuss what they want in a home, from unique architectural elements, style and size to lot type and proximity to amenities. The McKenzies create a basic home plan, and then work with the buyers to customize it until the final design is exactly what they want, able to satisfy all of their needs and allow for the specific lifestyles they’re seeking.

Nine of those dream homes will be on display this weekend during the company’s home tour. Of the nine, three homes are completed, and the remaining six are at different points in the construction process. Jim said the combination of finished and unfinished homes

allows people to see the company’s finished product while understanding and appreciating the quality of work involved before that point. The tour, he said, will show the wide variety of styles and designs in which the company can build.

“They won’t show everything that we do, obviously, but it’s a good sampling,” Jim said.

The tour will feature approximately half a year’s work for the company, as John said 18 homes is the average number it builds per year. The brothers have created up to 24 in years past, but John said 18 is the company’s “sweet spot,” because it ensures all buyers get more than enough time to get to know the company’s owners. Building more homes could mean a larger profit, but John said it isn’t worth pursuing. Loss of personal connections and perhaps even quality, he said, could be possible if the company grows much more, and that would diminish what makes McKenzie homes different.

“If we can do about 18 and do a good job at it, I’m content with that,” he said. “I want to make sure we’re still in control and delivering a quality home.”

By Vicky Earley There is no argument against the idea that the little black dress is a fashion icon.

Combined with a scarf and sweater, the little black dress is a casual standout.

Later in the day, that same dress – dressed with pearls or diamonds – is an elegant sensation worthy of an evening out!

Interior design, much like fashion, can benefit from that same “little black dress.” In an interior setting, that little black dress could be an oystercolored sofa; it could be a brown sectional; or it could even be a pair of black settees! The key is a focus on solid color and an awareness of texture.

I knew we had achieved the “little black dress” phenomenon when a client told us how much she liked our new sofa. I know this client has seen this sofa before – in fact, she has sat on this sofa! The “outfit” the sofa was wearing was the key: It was dressed in a mélange of black and white pillows in various designs and patterns. A brilliant silver Doberman statue was placed near it like a piece of fine jewelry.

This client had recently seen this same sofa when it had a support role in a Hemmingway-

inspired room setting dressed with leather and paisley pillows. Before that, it had co-starred in an urban-room scene with bold red and black hounds-tooth pillows and chairs.

The secret to this chameleon sofa is not that it is“neutral beige,” which is the perceived safe haven of decorating. No, this sofa is a large, solid black sofa that teeters between traditional and modern. It is on legs with casters – offering a nod to modern – but it sports a camel back, thus blending with traditional. Texture is a boucle that is invited into most design settings.

The little black dress concept is perfect for those who like many styles and avoid style commitment because of a fear of boredom. A solid foundation to a room is the perfect setting for building and interior fashion statement. The

sofa is the dress, and the pillows are the jewelry!

Just like a floral sundress, a large-pattern sofa is destined to be what it is with little opportunity for change.

The little black dress sofa might wear an array of large, solid color down pillows and a cashmere throw that beckons one to enter the room and cuddle up on a rainy day. The next day, that same sofa might be dressed in an abundance of pillows – all different and dressed up with design and embellishment. A furry rug at the foot of this sofa says it is dressed for an evening of entertaining!

If you are interested in trying the little black dress technique in decorating, remember; don’t try to match exact colors for your pillows.

Consider color families and go lighter and darker! Also, experiment with layering patterns, texture and embellishments.

Using numbers instead of words is not gr8 COMMENTARY

By Brandie Bohney Now that the primaries are over, I feel it’s safe to voice my concern over something disturbing I witnessed during the days prior to the election. I’m not talking about angry words between candidates or closeted skeletons being revealed. I’m talking about homemade campaign signs.

I’m not a big proponent of campaign signs, anyhow. I dislike how they junk up the landscape. They’re often cheap and flimsy and just plain unattractive. But the ones produced by the candidates are generally grammatically correct, and that makes them at least tolerable in that sense.

But as I drove home to visit my parents and grandmother May 3, I saw a campaign sign that made my blood boil. It also made me wonder how any right-minded (or left-minded) candidate would allow it to exist.

On a giant sheet of plywood, a crudely painted sign read, “Polly Pocket 4 Auditor” (name has been changed to protect the candidate and the sign painter; no offense intended to Polly Pocket). When did it become acceptable to use numerals instead of words? Especially in cases where the word being replaced isn’t, in fact, a number?

Never. It is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be acceptable to use numerals in such a fashion. Using numerals instead of non-

numeric words is not only wrong, but it also makes the user look like a dufus. Yes, a dufus.

You don’t run 4 auditor any more than you go 2 the store or feel too full because you 8 like a horse. You can’t say that the boys 1 their soccer game, and I would hope you keep your 6 life to yourself.

The problem is bigger than using numerals in lieu of number words because what is being replaced isn’t actually a number. Just because ate sounds like eight doesn’t mean you can use the numeral 8 in place of it. The same goes for for and 4, to or too and 2, won and 1, and sex and 6. (I admit that the last one is a stretch, but I’ve seen it used that way before, so I’m including it.)

And just as ridiculous is using numerals as part of words that include a portion that sounds like a number: gr8, 4gotten, 2gether, 1derful. Igh. It’s not cute. It’s not funny. It doesn’t even really save page space (on the sign in question, the 4 was on its own separate line). It’s dopey.

And really, you don’t want to be a dufus. And you probably don’t want to be supported by one, either. Because that makes you look like a dufus by association.

An open letter from a parent to a child who misbehaves COMMENTARY

By Becky Kapsalis This is all about you (child who misbehaves). It’s not about what or why you’re in trouble. In fact, for now, I don’t even want to know what you’ve done.

Your behavior tells me you’ve got a lot of internal hurt in you – hurts that have been within you for a long time and are beginning to surface in ways you believe are beyond your control. That’s simply not true. You and you alone are the driving force behind your behavior.

Everything you do is a choice. All your behaviors are learned. You are influenced by external factors, but not born with – nor forced to choose – bad behavior. As all behaviors are learned, they can also be unlearned!

“If it is to be, it is up to me!”

Experts have concluded we are all born with self-worth. Nothing or no one can take that self-worth from us. It never leaves us; it just gets away from us during certain times in our development.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can tap into our own self-worth to develop an emotional intelligence that will carry us

through the tough times and catapult us through the beneficial times. But before we can get back to our self-worth, we need to release the hurts that have been storing up within us.

Envision a loving cup of self-worth within your body. Each time you are emotionally, physically, spiritually or mentally hurt, your loving cup is compromised into self-doubt.

Unless you recognize and release the internal hurt in an appropriate way, your loving cup continues to be compromised until it bursts into uncontrollable and retaliatory anger. If you haven’t noticed, there is only one letter that separates danger from anger.

I’ll help you release the internal hurts from your loving cup (one hurt at a time) so you can choose, instead, to fill it with your inborn self-worth, leaving no room for self-doubt!

Singer will Rollerblade Monon for Riley

By Susie Chen Current in Carmel Local musician Justin McElhany has played guitar and written his own songs for 10 years.

On June 12, McElhany will perform his original songs while playing guitar; however, it won’t be at a local restaurant or stage.

It will be on the Monon Trail.

Starting at 8 a.m., McElhany will Rollerblade from 161st St. to 10th St., the entire 20-mile stretch of the Monon; over the course of these miles, he will repeatedly perform around 10 of his own songs. The purpose of this event is to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children.

The idea came to McElhany while exercising on the Monon one day. He said he had seen and read a few things about Riley, and the idea of giving to the hospital seemed like a good idea.

“I’m a giddy musician and whatnot, and I guess I was thinking of a way to raise money to get those kids something nice,” he said. “Those kids, they pull a heartstring. Some of them have been injured for life, and others are fighting for their lives. And I’ve never had to do that. It’ll be nice to try to do something for them.”

To raise the money, McElhany is counting on donations from people in the community and sponsorships from companies. Currently, McElhany said he hopes of raising at least $1,000, what he considers to be his short-term

and realistic goal.

“The main goal is to raise as much money as possible,” he said. “I would like to raise around $5,000, though that’s kind of like a dream goal right now.”

Individuals or businesses looking to donate money for McElhany’s cause can go onto his Web site, firstgiving.com/youngatheartforriley, where the donation will go directly to Riley.

McElhany said he is also looking for sponsors to put on the backs of his t-shirts and on the flyers, which he will use to promote the event. Those interested can visit his Web site, justinmcelhany.com, for information on how to sponsor him.

“I will do anything, really, for sponsors,” McElhany said. “That’s why I’m doing this. I’m willing to do anything that people normally wouldn’t do. I will come do your dishes even, if you will give money.”

Any way you slice it, you get a bunch of crunch COMMENTARY

By Chef Michael Vlasich Not a lot of foods stay crunchy through high heat, marination or shredding.

This week’s food of choice has only become part of American pop cuisine over the past decade or two. It is an edible starchy root, originally from the Americas, arriving at our dinner tables via the Philippines and Malaysia in the 17th century. It spread through Asia and the Pacific Islands as a food that stored well aboard the trading ships.

It’s a member of the legume (bean) family with flesh, having an underlying slightly nutty, melonistic flavor. The other names for it are “yam bean” and “Mexican turnip.” We know it as jicama (pronounced hick-ah-mah).

Jicama was first thought to have become

jicama salad Ingredients: • 1 each large jicama peeled and julienne • 1 cup blanched sweet white corn • 1 large ripe seeded vine ripe tomato • 1 each large julienne sweet pepper • 3/4 each julienne sweet purple onion • 2/3 cup toasted pine nuts • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese • 2/3 cup lime-cilantro vinaigrette • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley • 1 cup small cubed avocado Directions: Mix all ingredients together, adding in the avocado last. Let the salad rest for a minimum of three hours, then serve.

(Overnight is optimum, turning first thing in the morning.)

Legend says during the summer the peasants would snack on it when water was in shortage to get more liquid in their bodies. Even today, you will find the migrant workers snacking on jicama with squeezed lime, chile powder and cayenne.

Jicama appears similar to a turnip or rutabaga and is eaten raw once peeled; it is great in salads and coleslaw and is often used as a substitute for a water chestnut. One of its attributes is that it does not oxidize when exposed to the air as do other white-fleshed fruits and vegetables. When used in cooked dishes, jicama tends to take on the flavors of the dish.

Only the root part of the plant is edible, as the leaves, stems, ripe pods and seeds may be poisonous. The mature seeds contain a fairly high concentration of rotenone, an insecticide.

Jicama is very high in Vitamin C for a vegetable, is low in sodium, and has no fat. One serving, equal to one cup of cubed jicama, has only 45 calories, and it holds for quite a while in the refrigerator.

Included is a great salad recipe guaranteed to please. Give it a whirl.

CANNELLINI BEAN STEW Ingredients: • 2 15-oz. cans cannellini or other white beans, drained • 1 14.5-oz. can low-sodium chicken broth • 2 cloves garlic, smashed • 1 bay leaf • 6 carrots, halved lengthwise and cut into 3-inch pieces • 3 cups fresh spinach leaves • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt • 1/4 tsp. black pepper • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar (optional) • 1/4 cup (1 oz.) grated Parmesan (optional)

Directions: 1. In a Dutch oven, over medium heat, bring the beans, broth, garlic, bay leaf and carrots to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove and discard the bay leaf.

2. Add the spinach, salt, and pepper and stir for one minute. Spoon the stew into bowls.

Drizzle with the oil. If desired, add either some vinegar or parmesan.

Snap decisions shape our judgments COMMENTARY

By David Cain As he opened the door, I never expected the six-foot-five heavily tattooed man to be what greeted me. It was a bit startling. He was an intimidating height, and his look was a bit scary.

As he began to speak, his voice squeaked. It wasn’t that musky-manly sound from too many cigarettes. Instead it was a high-pitched squeak that cut the intimidating factor in half and took any scary rating down by at least one-third.

Now he seemed more funny than scary.

Judgments: We all make them. We decide the entire city is like one guy we met on an airplane.

We make the decision that the tall Barbieblonde is uppity and only interested in a Kentype, even though we’ve never talked to her. We make decisions solely on appearance. We judge a book by its cover.

A large percentage of what we hear is actually based on what we see. Visual clues provide information and form people’s opinions. A picture is worth a thousand words. A thousand words can be worthless without a picture. A picture is more than an image; the visual can overtake what you are saying with text.

Think about a Web site as an example. What you say is as much about how it looks as what words are used. You make statements and are

judged based on the look and feel. As you begin to navigate through the site, it starts talking, and the judgments continue. It also applies to everyone in your company. Each time they interact with the world, if people know where they work, they are your ambassadors. How they look and what they say is doing the talking for you, too.

Sure, we all know that you shouldn’t jump to judgment. But it’s actually a part of how we are wired. Our brain tells us to find danger and react to potential threats. We constantly scan the environment for anything that looks unfamiliar (doesn’t fit a story in our head) and decide if it is safe or a threat.

Those decisions have a lot to do with visual clues. While we don’t live in the wilderness anymore, these snap decisions can be used to your advantage. Consider that visual clues are providing a lot of decision-making tidbits to everyone you interact with. Maybe it’s time to trade in that red plaid polyester jacket for something more familiar?

U.S. needs to reevaluate its economy COMMENTARY

By Brian Shapiro The American economy is trying to regroup. The recent gyrations of the stock market have confirmed the belief that “little” people do not belong in the market. How can a trillion dollars to bail out Greece make the market go up? Would 2 trillion make it go up more?

The acronym for the European Markets problem children is PIGS: Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. At least on paper, these countries have experienced rapid growth. But Europe has a problem like the U.S.: Manufacturing has departed and has been replaced with service business and bigger government.

I am very concerned that our desire for lower interest rates has failed. Short-term Libor is below one-half percent, but small businesses and American citizens cannot get this rate. The rate goes to the big banks and investment bankers like Goldman Sachs. The system is not working.

Lower rates create the opportunity for businesses and citizens to cut their cash expenses.

About six months ago, I discussed how the efficient market system was challenged because Lehman Brothers and other large firms had gone broke, with Goldman and a few others remaining to do the investment banking. Now, we are seeing that the Federal Reserve cannot get the

rates lowered to the small and medium-sized companies.

Greece is not a little economy. Portugal and the others are also in big trouble. We can print money and get the funny money from China, but the real problem lies with our inability to create manufacturing jobs.

Whirlpool left Evansville after many years of supplying the area with good jobs. In fact, I would argue that the equipment from that plant was better than the junk that we are now importing. The U.S. government could have bailed them out and given them money for a new factory rather than move it to Mexico, China or the Czech Republic.

The U.S. and Europe are running out of the ability to finance the world. The U.S. has also lost the ability to create manufacturing jobs. The goods we are importing might be cheaper, but they are really more expensive in the long run.

The long-term risk of not having manufacturing jobs and other high paying jobs in America will hamper future U.S. and world growth.

By Angela LaSalle, M.D. What is the No. 1 complaint from patients in my office? Hands down, it’s fatigue. Ranging from afternoon energy slumps to sheer exhaustion, fatigue is a hallmark of many medical conditions, including a simple lack of sleep to serious, life-threatening problems.

Since each of us will experience feeling tired at some point, how do we know when our body is trying to warn us of something worrisome?

Are you getting enough sleep – seven hours minimum a night? Is your quality of sleep decreased as a result of hormonal issues, depression, sleep apnea, pain or other factors?

High stress levels, overloaded schedules and poor nutrition all factor into our energy levels.

Bad habits of heading toward the coffee pot or candy machine for a boost can quickly work against us, causing energy levels to nose dive even further a few hours later. Eliminate caffeine, sugar and processed foods. Bottom line: If you’re not feeling rested after cleaning up your diet and honoring a decent bedtime it’s time to see your doctor.

Consider, for example, that anemia, hypothyroidism, blood sugar problems or infections also can cause fatigue in varying degrees depend-

ing on the severity and the individual. Serious medical conditions such as heart disease and cancer can also masquerade as fatigue. Look for symptoms of a few of the aforementioned.

• Anemia: Fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations.

• Hypothyroidism: Coarse and thinning hair, dry skin and feeling tired, sluggishness or feeling weak.

• Blood-sugar problems: Mood changes, such as irritability, anxiety, restlessness or anger; weakness, lack of energy; and fatigue, lethargy, or drowsiness.

It is important to pay attention to other symptoms that might also be present, as these can help your doctor diagnose the underlying cause of your low energy levels.

Listening to your body is important. Paying attention to other symptoms that may be presented with your fatigue can help you and your doctor work together to determine whether you are just tired or sick and tired.

The truth about toenail fungus COMMENTARY

By Dr. David Sullivan As summer approaches, many people would like to start wearing more open-toed shoes, but resist because of the appearance of their toenails.

There are many treatments for toenail fungus, because there is not a single cure-all type remedy. Some try applying Vic’s Vaporub, while others soak in vinegar solutions. I even had a patient who bored a hole in a lemon and duct taped it to her big toe overnight.

Prescription medications have about a 70 percent cure rate, but they come with a long list of potential side effects. This does not cure you of fungus for life, either. Once the medication is out of your system, you are just as susceptible to get the fungus infection again.

If you have had a trauma to the nail bed or root, the chances of getting a normal-looking nail again are pretty slim. Topical antifungals have shown mixed results, and their efficacy typically depends on their ability to penetrate the thickened nail. The thicker the nail, the less likely they will work.

Many of you may have seen commercials on TV for a new toenail fungus laser. While this laser has shown promise in clinical trials, it is not yet FDA approved for toenail fungus, and many are questioning the 88 percent cure rate that has been marketed by the company that owns the laser. This is also not covered by in-

surance and is in the $800-$1000 price range.

Again, if it works you can still get the fungus back just as easily as you acquired it in the first place.

The best way to treat nail fungus long term is to avoid environments in which fungus thrives.

Fungus loves moist, dark, and dirty environments, such as an old pair of tennis shoes you use to mow the yard. Removal of the infected fungal toenail and a disciplined regimen of aggressive hygiene to the toes along with an antifungal during the regrowth phase of the nail, in my opinion, is the best way to treat the dreaded appearance of fungal toenails.

By Sally Feldman What’s more fun than being in your car with kids, the dog, the suitcases, the road games, the intense emotions and 10 hours until your destination?

Long road trips can put a lot of strain on your body. Here are some ways to alleviate the strain on your neck and back: 1. Make sure you make slight, but frequent adjustments in your seat’s position. If you keep your spine in one position for a long period of time, it can cause pain.

2. Remember to adjust your posture. Sitting in one place for too long can cause postural fatigue.

3. Fleece covers that soften the seat and backrests can provide a massage while you drive.

Blood circulation exercises 1. Contract your abs by pulling the belly button towards the spine without holding your breath. Hold for two seconds; repeat.

2. Place a pillow or towel between the knees and squeeze. Hold for two seconds, then release slightly. Repeat.

3. Hold a pillow between hands at chest level (or just press palms together) and squeeze

4. Place palms on the ceiling of the car, shoulder-width apart. Press into the roof for two seconds, then release and repeat.

Exercises outside of the car 1. Reach your arms above your head toward the sky without lifting your heels. Hold and release. Repeat as necessary.

2. Take a five-minute walk around the area to stretch out the leg muscles and get your blood circulating throughout your body.

3. To stretch your neck, gently bend your head backward so that your eyes are looking upward. Stretch and repeat.

4. To relieve and stretch out the shoulders, clasp your hands behind your lower back, keeping an upright posture. Lift your clasped hands out and away from the body and stop when you start to feel a little discomfort. Hold, release, and repeat.

entertainer Spotlight

Richard Carriger understands the meaning of service leadership. For years, he has worked diligently as the head of church missions for Carmel United Methodist Church traveling to remote areas like Bangladesh and Vietnam.

When Richard joined the Rotary Club six years ago, he sought to expand his local volunteerism. As Richard put it, “I Richard Carriger think everyone Volunteer Team Co-Chair should be active in their community. And, I view CarmelFest as a # 1 local event.”

This year, Richard is the Volunteer Committee Co-Chair for CarmelFest, helping to organize a team of 250 volunteers to support the festival.

When he is not volunteering, Richard manages his own business, Richard J Carriger Co., building custom homes. He and his wife, Debbie, have lived in Carmel for over 30 years. They have two sons Brian, who is the Entertainment Chair for CarmelFest, and Scott, who is a student at Butler.

Another year has flown by and it’s almost time for Carmel to host one of Indiana’s largest two-day festivals. But how can CarmelFest, an event that attracts thousands of visitors, run so smoothly from start to finish? With volunteers, that’s how!

Each year, 250 volunteers step up to make CarmelFest a memorable and enjoyable Fourth of July celebration. What is it like, you may ask, to be a part of the CarmelFest crew?

Here’s an idea of what you can expect.

Upon arriving at the Carmel Civic Square, you walk to the volunteer tent just outside of the fire department to check in and get directions (and yes, ladies, you will most likely catch a glimpse of Carmel’s most handsome firemen!). Then, wearing your new CarmelF-

est t-shirt, you head off with your fellow volunteers to your station. On your way, you take in the sights and sounds, perhaps catch a whiff of funnel cake from the food vendor area, and undoubtedly hear the performances taking place in the gazebo.

Alas you arrive at your destination, ready to carry out your task. What you find, however, is that volunteering at CarmelFest doesn’t really seem like work. That’s because it’s fun. Whether your job is to deliver ice, help the entertainers, or direct parking, you find yourself in the company of others. And in the heart of Carmel on a sunny afternoon, you’ll be hardpressed to find someone not wearing a smile (and last year proves that even a little rain can’t bring us down!).

Freedom run priMer

Celebrate America’s Birthday at the CarmelFest Freedom Run/Walk on Saturday – July 3rd. This 4.5 mile scenic trek thru Carmel will start at 8:00 a.m. at Carmel High School. There will also be a “pee wee run” for ages 10 and under at 9:30 am.

Pre-registration is $20 before June 29th. (Race Day the fee will increase to $23.00.) All entrants will receive a patriotic colored T-shirt, bib number, goodie bag, post race refreshments.

The Pee Wee Fun Run is FREE and open to all children ages 10 and under.

Defining life in the spiritual lane Brought Death,” not “Natural Death Happens Anyway.” It was a split, animated discussion.

It was Western St. Augustine vs. Eastern St. Irenaeus.

Evangelicals like straight, dependable answers, with straight, dependable definitions for faith’s day-to-day questions: What is sin? What is forgiveness? What is grace? What is life? What is death? What is salvation?

Thing is, anyone can learn “about” God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, church history, other religions, meditation, faith systems, theology. For these pursuits, definitions are helpful and can make religion seem easy, if superficial. Defining a relationship – actually knowing someone, like God, for example – defies labels.

God’s goal is not our mastery of definitions or doctrine. God is hungry for our loving, freelyfound relationship with Him through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit; and our love for each other.

God gave us a brain to discover Him, and learn. Let’s not sell God, or ourselves, short with narrow definitions. There is a big history of Christianity that precedes modern religious “definitions.” Learn, and love, all you can.

COMMENTARY

By Bob Walters Our Wednesday-night Bible study weathered a lively exchange recently regarding whether human beings were mortal or immortal before “The Fall” of Adam and Eve. Most of us in the Western church assume that if not for the sin of Adam and Eve, we would physically live for ever. Death, Genesis 3 seems to say, only entered the world after Adam and Eve’s sin of trying to be like God without God: eating from the tree of “God’s knowledge” at Satan’s tempting against God’s strict orders not to.

It turns out there is more than one school of thought on original immortality, even though most of us have heard only the one above. At issue are a couple of fairly major topics: • God’s intention of natural life vs. spiritual life • God’s intention of death in Creation Our teacher – a former Cambridge lecturer, Bible translator and expert on Eastern Orthodoxy – cited patristic (church fathers) sources suggesting God created humans as He did all other life: to live a natural life and die a natural death. What makes humans the “image of God” is our spiritual immortality, not our physical immortality. It’s our Spirit life that sin puts to death, and our Spiritual death that Jesus Christ hung on the Cross to defeat.

By Rachael Noble Often, a man asks me why he – a great guy – can’t get the girl. Meanwhile, his playboy buddy is scoring left and right. Do girls really like the bad boy?

I really had to do some soul searching on this one. Do we gals purposely seek the player? Why, when my head has seemingly been on straight (it seemed to be in proportion with my shoulders, anyway), have I sometimes chosen the bad guy?

Once, while dating a nice guy, I started feeling like perhaps he just wanted friendship because he rarely called and never took our relationship to the next level. Eventually, a Mr. Casanova swooped in, pursued me hard and eventually cheated on me (boooo!).

Later, guy No. 1 asked why the heck I chose player boy over him. My response? “Simple. He made it clear how he felt. You didn’t.� I mean, after three months of dating, I was getting very few phone calls and I was the one who had to suggest the dates. What is a girl to think?

Frankly, I’m still a little old fashioned in that I strongly believe the man should make the moves.

Now I am anti-player, of course. But there are a few things the A+ player does that the good guy can learn from. The player ‌

• Is strong in pursuit and aggressive enough to grab her attention but not too aggressive to be scary • Makes it very clear he wants to go out with the girl • Acts “openâ€? (talks, listens, opens doors, compliments her and spends time with her) • Acts confident without being cocky • Acts like he’ll be faithful and that she’s the only girl who catches his attention A girl can’t always tell if the above is all an act or is real. But for the bad boy, once he knows he has won her over, it’s time for him to move on.

It’s no wonder women fall for the bad boy, when the good boy isn’t pursuing! When the only time you get asked out is by a player and you can’t always tell at first if he is one, you don’t have much choice. The good guy doesn’t pursue for some reason. It baffles me.

In a perfect world, the good guy will win. But in order to do so, he needs to start making his intentions clear. C’mon, good boy. I’m rooting for you!

Diagnosing, treating and preventing bladder and kidney stones COMMENTARY

By John Mikesell Bladder and kidney stones are serious problems in dogs as well as people.

These conditions, which are also known as uroliths or urinary calculi, can be excruciatingly painful and potentially fatal. Fortunately, informed caregivers can do much to prevent the formation of stones and in some cases actually help treat stones that develop.

There are two types of stones. The first is struvite, which contains magnesium, ammonium and phosphate. These almost always occur in the bladder in combination with a bacterial infection and are most frequently found in smallbreed females.

This week, we will discuss calcium oxalate or “CaOx” stones CaOx stones occur in both the bladder (lower urinary tract) and kidneys (upper urinary tract) of male and female dogs. Most calcium oxalate uroliths are nephroliths (found in the kidney), and most of the affected patients are small-breed males. CaOx uroliths are radiopaque, and most are easily seen on radiographs (X-rays).

In addition to breed and sex, risk factors for CaOx stones include being overweight, having too little exercise, being neutered and eating a dry-food diet, which contributes to more concentrated urine. Small dogs are thought to be more susceptible, because they drink less water relative to their size than large dogs do.

Signs of stones: • Blood in your dog’s urine • Frequent passing of small amounts of urine • “Accidents” in house-trained dogs

Pay attention to install programs COMMENTARY

By Gary Hubbard The computer industry has evolved into a world where virtually every company wants you to install a program that will load whenever you start your computer – generally for the company’s purposes, not yours.

Printer manufacturers, digital camera makers, software companies and a whole host of characters are taking advantage of the user’s trust and lack of attention to cause much of the “slowdown” issue we all experience in our computers.

The more of these programs you allow to be installed, the quicker your fast, new computer will seem like it is stuck in the mud.

Adding to the problem are all the malicious software programs lurking in and around the Internet just waiting for an opportunity to sneak into your computer and silently use its resources in the background without your knowledge.

Keeping this junk from building up in the first place will be much easier (and cheaper) than having to clean it out afterward.

Unfortunately, too many users get frustrated with their old computer’s slowness, only to make the same mistakes with the new computer and end up back in the same boat within six months.

If you make the same mistakes, you will end up with the same results on your new computer.

Here’s the No. 1 way to keep most of this junk from ever getting into your computer in the first place: Pay attention!

What I am referring to is that dizzying (by design) number of screens that come up when you’re installing a new hardware device or software program.

For example, I recently setup a new Windows 7 computer and had to install the printer software for my HP multifunction

printer/copier/scanner/fax. During the installation, I was presented with two choices for the installation: recommended or custom (“for advanced users” to scare you off).

The “recommended” option tried to make it sound like it was very important that you have what they recommended for everything to work properly.

I always choose the “custom” option, because I am very aware of the sneaky games these companies play. When I chose the “custom” option, the next screen showed the three items that would have been installed had I chosen the “recommended” option.

The first item was the actual printer driver software; the second was a quality-assurance customer feedback program; and the third was the Yahoo toolbar (shame on you HP!) But HP is not the only company that is doing this (digital camera makers can be worse), which is why you should always choose the “custom” or “expert” option for anything you install.

There isn’t enough room in this column to warn you about every malicious scam that can add to the problem, but above all, if you don’t need something, don’t install it.

Stay away from file-sharing sites and pirated software, and don’t click on anything in an e-mail that prompts you for more information or any site that “offers” you the latest version of a program so you can access a video.

Zip-lock flies: Too good to be true?

By Dick Wolfsie I’ve had zipper problems my entire life. I spent most of my youth with an open fly, not because I was forgetful, but because it always got stuck halfway up. I still have nightmares about growing older, forever trapped in my snowsuit.

So, I was intrigued when I got an e-mail the other day with the subject line: zip-lock/ flies. What an idea! Could you really buy a pair of jeans with a zip-lock closure in the front?

Wouldn’t that be a conversation starter at the country-western bar where you hang out?

The message was actually referring to a method of ridding your home and yard of flying insects. Instead of electronic bug zappers or a cloud of insecticide, simply stick half a dozen pennies in a zip-lock bag, fill it with tap water and nail it to a post or doorway in the insected area. (I like inventing words).

I went online to see who had tried what appeared to be a typical fly-by-night scam. Even restaurants are experimenting with this idea, hoping to shepherd their personal allotment of pests to competing businesses where the chef may have opted for a more traditional approach, like taking out the garbage at the end of the night.

There were several posts on the Web sites I read. People wanted to know what year the pennies should be, or if using a 54-gallon clear plastic trash liner was a better option for their pig barn. One woman asked if a dollar bill would work if she didn’t have the exact change.

There’s always one killjoy who overthinks a good idea. “My hypothesis is that pennies in water ionize, generating an electromagnetic field that produces a sine wave frequency; as the temperature of the water reaches optimal range, the frequency matches the resonant frequency of a fly’s skull, effectively ‘ringing’ its neural centermass like a minuscule bell.” Don’t invite this guy to your Memorial Day barbeque. And I’d avoid him at Christmas, because the last thing you want at a wild holiday office party is some guy explaining how mistletoe works.

How do people make these discoveries in the first place? What first prompted a person to wrap his body parts in duct tape to get rid of unsightly warts? And how did that same someone then realize that it was the tape and the not that half-pint of tequila that cleared up his problem?

There is another solution to the fly problem: Fill an empty bottle with an inch of vinegar, replace the cap, then poke a few holes in the top. Flies check in but can’t check out. But some

poor guy from South Bend thought it was his wife’s herbal vinaigrette dressing and shook the contents before dousing it on his Cobb salad.

Here’s another good one for repelling bugs.

Add a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to equal parts of Pledge and white wine. Then spray on all your light bulbs. Okay, I just made that up, but why I can’t start a little buzz of my own on the Web? One guy on the Internet claimed that back in the 1940s his wife used a variation of the zip-lock concept by putting two coins in a clear glass jar filled with water. It didn’t work that well, so he added a couple more pennies.

“Edgar,” said his wife, “do you always have to put in your two cents?”

When my wife read this essay, she accused me of writing that horrible joke first, then creating an entire story around it. I write my column in my basement office, so she couldn’t possibly know what I did. Unless, of course, she was a fly on the wall.

How to create an outdoor kitchen and patio for your home COMMENTARY

By Larry Greene Question: We would like to create an outdoor kitchen and patio area behind our house. What are the steps we should take to get started?

Answer: Americans are spending more than ever on outdoor living spaces. This trend is certainly true here locally. As is the case indoors, the outdoor kitchen is usually the central hub of your outdoor living space. An “outdoor kitchen” is usually defined as containing at least one good quality cooking appliance like a grill, some countertop space and a sink. Planning and design are critical. Consider the following.

1. Start with a master plan: Make sure you hire a professional designer to develop an overall “master plan” of the backyard.

While you may not construct all improvements at once, the master plan allows you to phase in projects as your budget allows.

The designer will know how to orient the outdoor kitchen in relation to other outdoor features like decks, porches, land-

scaping, firepits and water features.

2. Location: Many factors need to be considered. How much privacy do you want?

How far do you want to walk from the main house kitchen? Consider the amount of sun and shade. You don’t want your family and guests blinded by the setting

sun. Also, plan for how to deal with wind direction and the effect on ventilation and smoke from the grill. Think about how you entertain and use the space.

Remember, most local governmental agencies require you to secure a building permit for an outdoor kitchen project.

3. Cold temperature challenges: An outdoor kitchen presents some challenges.

Provisions for winterizing the kitchen must be thought of during the design phase. Plumbing drains can freeze during the winter and supply lines need drained.

Most appliance manufacturers are now introducing appliances that are UL-rated for outdoor use. Propane powered patio heaters or electric infrared heaters can comfortably extend your time outside through the winter.

4. Budget for mechanical issues: Don’t forget to have a professional investigate the feasibility of extending electrical, plumbing and gas lines to the project area.

You may need to relocate landscaping or irrigation materials as well. These items can be surprises to the budget unless they are properly investigated on the front end.
