CARMEL TAKES A ‘NEW URBANIST’ APPROACH WITH ITS DOWTOWN MASTER PLAN

One week of intensive discussions with development professionals and citizens created a long-term vision for Carmel. The Downtown Master Plan and SmartCode Charrette, held in February, mapped out an innovative master plan featuring a “new urbanist” design for the area surrounding downtown Carmel. “A handful of big ideas came out of the charrette,” said Mike Hollibaugh, Carmel’s director of community services. “The biggest was to redevelop the National City parking lot at the corner of Main HOLLIBAUGH Street and Range Line Road into green space.” “We have plenty of available retail space downtown,” said Jill Zaniker, co-owner of Simply Sweet Shoppe. “The owners want to put another building on that corner, but a park would make the district a destination and increase customer frequency for the merchants.” According to Hollibaugh, the community services department is communicating with the landowner and redevelopment commission to ZANIKER explain the added value of green space versus another building. The park, named Bethlehem Square, would provide a gathering place for residents. As the first Indiana city to adopt SmartCode, the goal is to simplify zoning by providing a detailed, more visual representation of Carmel’s development standards using text and artwork. “While Carmel has done a good job creating development standards that result in a high level of architecture, there is a lot of overlapping rules in zoning districts which creates confusion,” Hollibaugh said. This study, compiled by Town Planning and Urban Design Collaborative, a consulting company based in Tennessee, was retained by Carmel’s Department of Community Services at a cost of $200,000. Presented as a 100-year plan, Carmel’s SmartCode represents the combined ideas of more than 100 people who participated in the charrette. Community leaders, city planning experts, business owners and citizens all had the opportunity to voice their opinions about this creative vision for Carmel’s future. Create a commuter university in the Meridian Science and Technology Park located at 116th and Pennsylvania streets utilizing the existing infrastructure of the industrial area. Protect existing residential areas and tie in new development along Range Line Road to join Old Town and City Center by creating a midtown. Implement a trolley on a rail line that would transport residents between the A&D District and the Monon Center.

OUR TAKES It is our position that the city must remain committed to enforcing noise ordinances as the warm weather has us opening windows and venturing outside for weekend barbeques. Aside from the significant population increases we have experienced over these past years, noise levels have increased from all corners. Many suburban motorcyclists take great pride in the offthe-chart decibels created as they rumble along on an after-work jaunt. Meanwhile, others insist on pumping up the volume until we all get to share in the latest hip hop sounds. Whether precipitated by midlife crisis or teenage angst, the determination to seek premature deafness

While personal freedoms are routinely threatened by America’s shift to a fully urban (or suburban) dominated culture, some standards are required to maintain civility in close quarters. And noise makes the list. The loud pipes and booming speakers are destroying the rights of others to peacefully enjoy our fair city. Honestly, Carmel could do more to create sufficient ordinances. Leaders should consider action. In the meantime, we urge enforcement of what is in place – not with an eye to becoming a police state, but instead to preserve enjoyment of summer for all.

It is our position that the unveiling of the Japanese Garden in Carmel further highlights one of Carmel’s greatest strengths: cultural diversity and appreciation. Mayor Jim Brainard hosted the dedication of our community’s latest amenity, located adjacent to the Monon Trail immediately south of City Hall, in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of Carmel’s Sister City relationship with City, Osaka, Japan. The verdant setting reflects the labor of countless volunteers, the city of Carmel and Kawachinagano. Also commemorating the day was a Japanese culture exposition featuring calligraphy, Koto performance, flower arranging and a tea ceremony.

IS THE BIBLE ENTIRELY TRUE? Editor:

“I believe the Bible is entirely true, but it’s a tough read.” So writes Bob Walters in his April 28 column (“Dying So We Can Live”). If the Bible were entirely true, then Hosea 14:16 would override the “God is pro-life” positions attributed to God at right-to-life rallies. In Hosea 14:16, God declares that Samaria’s punishment for rebelling against “her God” would include infanticide: “Their little ones shall be dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open.” As long as one believes his/her God or the word of God, whether it be the Bible, Koran, or whatever, condones the killing of innocents (i.e. the Passover, the murder of Egyptian children on God’s command, 9-11), then consciences can be at peace. It

needs to be asked: What is the Word/Work of God? What is the Word/Work of Men? To be sure, most Americans scoff at the notion, “Resist not thine enemy!” Yet, that is a command from Jesus. Christian America likes Jesus’ other message: “I come not to bring peace, but the sword.” We must defend ourselves, not turn the other cheek, give our coats and cloaks to our enemies. Dying a martyr’s death without resistance was OK for Jesus. It is not our way. So, yes, the Bible is a tough read. Partly because we get so many mixed and inconsistent messages from it. But take what good you can from it, as you would any other work from the dawn of thought and writing.

Last week marked the newest addition to the historic plaques displayed throughout the Arts & Design District. The plaque, located outside Serendipity Tea Room (2 W. Main St.) was commemorated after the conclusion of the May Day Tea. The Carmel Arts Council and Carmel Redevelopment Commission joined to honor the landmark. Doreen Squire-Ficara, executive director of the Carmel Arts Council and author of all historical plaques, said it is important to preserve the landmarks that make the community great. “Two West Main is a location that is not only beautiful, but full of memories for many Old Town Carmel residents,” she said. The location was selected for its history, dating back to 1829 when French fur trader John Brouillet used it as a trading post. The current building was completed in 1923 to become Citizens State Bank. John Brown purchased the building in 1938 and it became Brown’s Drug Store. The building housed Union State Bank from 1954-1972 and became the location for several insurance agencies until 1985. That year, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Butcher purchased the building. They restored it to its current condition in 1996. The Butchers remodeled the first floor

Should you use ‘fat burners?’

Numerous products on the market contain thermogenic ingredients – or what some of us call “fat burners.” Ephedrine, yohimbine, green tea extract (EGCG), bitter orange (synephrine) and even caffeine are examples, and they basically work by stimulating the central nervous system. This increases your “fight or flight” responses, indirectly providing energy and allowing you to process calories at a faster rate. Along with these supposed benefits, there are also side effects, including increased blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. Another potential issue is the fact that, individually, they don’t seem to have a dramatic effect. As a result, companies often combine several of these ingredients into one product and sell it as an energy or health supplement. Unfortunately, we don’t know how any of these stimulants will specifically affect you as an individual, let alone many of these ingredients combined. More independent (not companysponsored) research is needed. So, despite the dramatic claims of limitless energy, your best bet is to pass on these products. Instead, focus on maximizing your activity, fitness and food choices. The famous guru of fitness, Jack LaLanne, said it best when he proclaimed

It’s now possible for people like you and me to find out – real time – when Britney Spears is at Starbucks or perhaps share her excitement at finally finding her underwear… Intrigued, I began experimenting with Twitter. I read more about it, created an account, and started Twittering. These twitter guys should hire Styx as their spokesmen. There are some positives, however. It’s a great platform to broadcast short messages of value to an audience. learn. You can identify topics of interest to you and begin following those Tweets (a Tweet is a Twitter message). I have found this to be incredibly informative, as many of these folks are thought leaders who identify and/ or set trends. Recently, a good friend of mine shared with me that Tom Crean is on Twitter. I went to his page (@tomcrean) and was amazed at what I found. Here’s a supersuccessful coach at one of the most heralded basketball programs in the country, and he is Twittering! It is so cool reading what he Tweets – they provide access and insight into exactly what’s on his mind. Amazing. Bill Gates is there (@billgates); Mike Pence is there (@RepMikePence). This unprecedented access to information at such an intimate level is astounding. Is it a fad? I don’t know. Is the company making any money? Not sure. Check it out. changes in the room, such as moving furniture or taking down patterned wallpaper, or repainting with a color that will compliment the art. If you prefer to do the room first and then find the art, size and color are the two major criteria for selection. For any particular space, art that is too large will overwhelm, and art that is too small will be lost and look out of proportion. As a rule, paintings should be hung so the center is at eye level. Sculptures may sit on the floor or a table or pedestal, depending on the design. Remember these rules are just guidelines. There will always be exceptions. When selecting a painting to match color, select one or two of the boldest colors in your room, and look for art that has those colors in it. Don’t think an exact match is essential. Picking up one or two of the same colors will send a message that the painting belongs in this environment. Keep in mind that the selection of art is an art in itself. hould the art fit the room, or should the room fit the art? Before this scrambles your brain like that adage about the chicken and the egg, consider that this is a 50/50 proposition. If you polled a group of artists, 100 percent would insist it is imperative that you buy the art you love and build a room around it. If you feel strongly about a particular work of art, this Vicky Earley is certainly a direction. You may, Design however, find that when you get the art home and place it on a wall or pedestal, it doesn’t work with its surroundings. By not “working,” I mean the art looks out of place in the room. Placing art in the wrong surroundings detracts from its beauty and impact. What should you do if you bring a painting home and it clashes with its environment? First, try the piece in various places in your home. The perfect place just might be a place you had not considered. If you can’t find a place where the art looks best, you may need to make some

At least 10 authors and illustrators from Carmel are participating in Saturday’s Children’s Author and Illustrator Festival at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Program Room. They include Rebecca Kai Dotlich, Alice Rowen Easley, Bette Killian, Jim Kraft, Valerie Marsh, Roxy Morgan, Anne Paluszny, Tracy Richardson, Jeff Stone and Jennifer Zivoin. Avid young readers and their parents have a chance to meet more than 26 children’s book authors and the artists who bring their words magically to life, thanks to the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation, which has organized Saturday’s event. “This is an exciting fundraising program where kids will have a chance to meet some of their favorite authors,” said Ruth Nisenshal, the Foundation’s director. Most of the artists are from Indiana, which may pose a surprise to anyone unaware of the large number of Hoosiers

who earn their living writing and embellishing children’s books. The day includes a series of demonstrations by authors Jeff Stone, Valerie Marsh, Rebecca Kai Dotlich, Valiska Gregory and Nathan Clement on topics such as animal kungfu, draw & tell books, and poetry in children’s literature. In addition, Jennifer Zivoin, of Carmel, will talk KRAFT about what it takes for an illustrator to create a visual masterpiece for a children’s book. Other authors and illustrators expected to attend include Peggy Archer, Robert A. Black, Ray E. hate raw onions. Yes, I know … hate is a strong word. But I really do. I have some sort of choke reflex that I cannot stop if I happen to bite into one. The funny thing is I like onions. I enjoy their flavor. I eat them fried, I love French onion soup, and I cook with them all the time. How messed up is that? I have something unusual about me. In fact, all of us do. Taste (noun): The sense by which the flavor of things is perceived when they are brought in contact with the tongue. I know I am not by myself on this one. I have met, been friends with and cooked for people with similar “food issues.” But here’s the thing: When I go out to eat, I communicate my strong dislike. I inform my server about my “food nemesis,” and I ask questions about the dish I am about to order. I actually want to enjoy my meal when I go out to eat. So what’s my point? Don’t keep your food aversion a secret. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions. Don’t be afraid you will hurt the chef ’s feelings. In the restaurant business, servers, chefs,

managers and owners want you to enjoy your dining experience. Here are some tips to consider when ordering out: • Clearly read the menu description. Stop the conversation just for a moment and pay attention to what you are about to order. • Ask about any food item you are not familiar with. It may just be a different form of something you do not care for. • Be vocal if the dish is not to your liking within the first couple bites, so a new entrée can be made quickly for you and the establishment can be given a chance to correct the situation. • Don’t be afraid to ask if the dish you really want can be made without your personal “will not eat” ingredient and if something can be substituted in its place. • State for the record any food that you know you cannot eat even if you do not read it in the menu description. Again, it all boils down to personal taste. The goal of a restaurant is to make its guests happy. A phone call and/or e-mail after the fact cannot change the experience you had at an establishment. 1/2 oz. orange juice 1/4 oz. sugar syrup Directions: Shake well with cracked ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. - drinksmixer.com

Ingredients: Salmon: • 1-1/2 pounds salmon fillet (or larger), in one piece • 2 tbsp. olive oil or melted butter • 1 tsp. salt • 1/4 tsp. black pepper Cucumber Dill Sauce: • 1/2 cup plain yogurt • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 2 green onions, chopped • 1 small cucumber, peeled and chopped • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dillweed (or half as much dried) • 1/4 teaspoon salt Cooking Instructions

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

Brush a baking pan (large enough to hold the fillet without scrunching it up) with some of the olive oil or melted butter. Place salmon fillet on the baking pan, then brush with the remaining olive oil or melted butter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and place in preheated oven. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, stir together all the ingredients for the cucumber dill sauce. Chill. Remove salmon from oven, cut into portions and serve with sauce. (Or you can chill the salmon to serve cold as a fillet or in a salad.)

BOOK REVIEW One Man’s Hilarious Exchanges with Internet Spammers

By Bob Servant Bob Servant is a colorful local character in Broughty Ferry, Scotland. When freelance journalist Neil Forsyth discovers Bob has been responding to his e-mail spam, he begins to research the facts of Bob’s messages and finds a series of entertaining interactions waiting to be shared. Bob turns the tables on the spammers, asking them for lions, legal help, recipes for African cuisine and paintings. He negotiates for a better percentage with the supposed African king’s son and plays along with the Russian bride scam. While some of the stories are a bit bawdy (think Dave Barry meets Benny Hill), Bob Servant’s creativity in beating the spammers at their own game is genius. For anyone who’s ever wondered what one might do to make spammers go away, Bob seems to have found an amusing answer. Reviewed by Lisa Dick CCPL Librarian

Entertainment Co-Chair Brian Carriger is only 23 years old, but this is his fifth year serving on the CarmelFest committee. As a young entreprenuer, his interests always have put him at the forefront of creative ideas. This year he is heading up the North Zone for CarmelFest by booking bands, organizing the stage and making sure that our guests have a great experience. Brian is the co-owner and business manager for Carmel-based Immediate Info, LLC, a business Web video production company.

The popular and accomplished Carmel Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of David Bowden, will present stirring patriotic selections as a prelude the fireworks on July 4. The CSO performance begins at 8:45 p.m. and is to last approximately one hour. The orchestra exists to add to the quality of life in the city through performances and educational opportunities, and it certainly has accomplished that and more. Once the Regional Performing Arts Center is completed, the orchestra will have a permanent home and Carmel another jewel to truly call its own.

Three years ago, Alice Bryan was talked into volunteering for her very first CarmelFest by good friend Gary Frey, CarmelFest chairman. Little did she know that her two days of sweating in the sun with thousands of festival goers would lead to a life-changing encounter. On her second day volunteering at CarmelFest, Alice found herself as an attendant at a VIP parking lot on the CarmelFest grounds along with fellow volunteer Chuck Howe. With two hours together serving their “time” Alice and Chuck found out that they had some common interests. Alice was an attractive divorced mother of two mostly grown children, and Chuck was in nearly the same position. Well, “that

The homeowner was a little excited at the prospect of a weekend without college sports or Internet access. Our desperate attempts to encourage the cable company for a prompt repair were less than successful.

Monday morning introduced the reluctant phone call to the husband/father/ sports addict. His comments are a testament to him, the home improvement industry vision and “builders” everywhere. He had a marvelous weekend! Instead of being plastered to the flat screen, he read a book on the not-yet-complete elegant brick patio. He had coffee and enjoyed the paper with his lovely wife Saturday morning and grilled out with the family on his custom grill station. It’s a warm summer day, and you’re on the way to the grocery store to pick up a loaf of bread. In the parking lot, you pass a car with a poodle panting inside. You should: a) Smile and acknowledge the cute pet. b) Run into the grocery store and page the dog’s owner. c) Buy the dog a treat.

If you chose “B,” you chose wisely. The panting poodle may be minutes from death – a victim of heatstroke. Every year, thousands of pets die from overexposure to heat, usually because people leave their pets in cars while they shop or run a quick errand. It doesn’t have to be extremely hot outdoors for a pet to suffer heatstroke inside a car. Leaving a pet inside a closed automobile for just 15 to 20 minutes is risky on an 80degree day, as temperatures can quickly rise to 120 degrees – enough heat to kill a pet.

An open window? No good.

Leaving windows open in the car is not the answer. Your pet may jump out of the vehicle and become a traffic casualty. Also, leaving the windows open “just a crack” isn’t enough to prevent heatstroke. Heatstroke can be prevented quite easily if you follow one rule: Leave your pet at home when running errands in the summer months. If it is not possible to leave your pet at home, take these precautions to combat heatstroke during short trips: • Run errands during cooler times of the day, dawn or dusk. • Leave car windows down, and protect with pet-secure window screens that allow maximum air flow. • Carry a gallon jug of fresh, cool water from home, along with a bowl from which your pet may drink.

• Check on your pet’s health every few minutes.

Signs of heatstroke

Heatstroke in a pet is very easy to diagnose. Some first signs are quite visible. They include excessive panting, salivation and a racing pulse. The pet also will have a high body temperature and may even vomit. In latter stages of heatstroke, a pet lapses into a coma. At this point, many pets suffer brain damage and die.

Emergency treatment

When your pet experiences some of the warning signs of heatstroke, lower its body temperature on the way to the veterinarian. Submerging or pouring cold water over your pet’s body can help. Jethro is an 8-year-old male tri-color foxhound or treeing walker coonhound. He is a big boy who is very gentle and well mannered. Jethro arrived at the shelter with scars and scrapes on his face and legs and an eye infection, so he may have been out on his own for awhile. His eyes are better and his scrapes are healing, but we discovered he has heartworm disease. Tweeting is done through a program called Twitter, which sounds to me less Mike Redmond like something Humor I would want to use, and more like the name of a woodland creature from a Disney cartoon. According to the Twitter Web site (www.twitter.com), it’s “a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?” I guess that’s why I’m not a good candidate to be a Tweeter. COLLEGE WOOD CHESS FOURTH IN STATE - College Wood Elementary’s chess team finished fourth in the grade 6-and-under division in the recent state competition. Team members DJ Butcher, Carl Liu, Alex Novak, Luke Obrique and Mark Zhang competed against 32 other schools that qualified for the state competition in this division. Last week, I did something rather uncharacteristic: I watched “Jeopardy!” In college, I had a roommate who was a trivia junkie, and she could answer at least 75 percent of the questions correctly. I, on the other hand, can’t remember the name of a song or band long enough to write it down so I can purchase an album. “Jeopardy!” makes me feel stupid. I acquiesced this time because one of the categories was “parts of speech.” Rock on! I was prepared for whatever obscure part of speech Alex Trebek could throw at me. What a complete disappointment. The questions (solutions) were, in this order: What is a verb? What is an adjective? What is an interjection? What it an adverb? What is a preposition? Seriously? A preposition – in – was the $1,000 answer. I realize there are only eight parts of speech, but come on. Surely the correlative conjunction not only–but also could have been used. What about some of those tricky indefinite pronouns such as each or all? Two possibilities occurred to me at

this point: 1. Parts of speech must be a whole lot more difficult to master and recall than I thought, or 2. The rest of the “Jeopardy!” questions must be a whole lot easier than I thought. I’ll give “Jeopardy!” a small break for trying to make the words a little tricky: The verb word was dreams, which could be confused for a noun. And in can function as many parts of speech, but it is most frequently used as a preposition. The important thing here, though, is not that people can recall word-for-word the functions of every part of speech. It is more important that people know how to use those parts of speech correctly. Of course, at some point, learning all those parts of speech is tantamount to learning to use them correctly. But if you learn correct usage to the point that it becomes second nature, recall of the exact part of speech is the stuff of game shows.
