City council issue: Thoughts on roundabouts

One topic that everyone government seems to have thoughts on is the abundance of roundabouts in the city. In an election forum and phone interviews, council candidates shared their thoughts. Northeast District Sue Finkam “My residents in the Northeast District very much want roundabouts. And I think now that everyone understands the benefit of Finkam roundabouts, people want them at every intersection with a traffic light in Carmel.”

John Accetturo “Sometimes roundabouts work and sometimes they don’t work as well. We have a roundabout, or I call it a figure eight, at 136 that needs some major enhancements. I think it’s important to plan things out and not be Accetturo hasty.”

Keith Griffin “I’m a big fan of the roundabouts. I’m fan as a user and as a potential city councilor just because of the efficiency that roundabouts provide. It limits the Griffin idling of the traffic and limits the severity of accidents. The safety has been proven.”

Central District Eric Seidensticker “Roundabouts are, ‘You like them or you don’t.’ It depends how you are. They are very efficient for low- to medium-volume traffic, but poorly inefficient in high-volume traffic. There are Seidensticker

areas of the country that had them and removed them.”

Bruce Kimball “I read a report recently that Hamilton County in the coming decade is going to double. So we need to plan now for those Kimball needs. People pass through Carmel and they are all going to be carrying more and more traffic. I found in my experience that roundabouts are the most efficient way.”

At-Large Ron Houck “I totally agree that roundabouts certainly would be better than having those long stops at stop signs. I do think we need Houck to be careful about how they are engineered and where they are placed.”

Kevin “Woody” Rider “Some of our early roundabouts were too small. We’ve added dedicated turn lanes.

We did that with Keystone. With roundabouts, one of the greatest advantages is the safety. You don’t get head-on collisions or T-boned, you get grazed. It’s safer.”

Ron Carter “I want people to imagine: We have almost 90 roundabouts in the city. Think of where we would be from a traffic standpoint if we didn’t have those Carter roundabouts. If we had stop lights at all those intersections. We would be in really, really bad shape.”

New area code – Get ready for a new area code in central Indiana next year. The new code is 463, which spells out IND. It will be assigned only to new customers. Project GLOC – CrossFit Carmel announced that the fourth annual Project GLOC women-only competition will be held April 25-26 at Roundtripper Sports Academy in Westfield. An expected 400 competitors will compete in the two-day event. Project GLOC is open to the public. Tickets are $5 for a single-day or $9 for both days. Children age 12 and under are free.

Resident honored – The University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) honored outstanding faculty and staff at the annual Paul A. Funk Recognition Awards Banquet held recently. Carmel resident Daniel Kittle was one of five people who received the ACES Alumni Association Award of Merit.

Swim team honored – State Sen. Mike Delph (RCarmel) authored Senate Resolution 39 to recognize the achievements of the Carmel High School Girls Swimming and Diving Team at the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s 2015 Girls Swimming and Diving State Tournament.

University High School – Justin Blanding was hired as the head coach position for varsity girls basketball at University High School in Carmel.

Republican Club – The Carmel Clay Republican Club will host a public forum at 6:30 p.m. April 29 at the American Legion Post, 852 W. Main St. Citizens can see and hear candidates who will appear the May 5 primary. There are 12 candidates running for seven seats on the council.

Folk Concert Series – First Avenue Folk Concert Series presents Connor Garvey at 7:30 p.m. April 29 at The Warehouse, 254 1st Ave. SW. Garvey has won awards at Kerrville Folk Festival, Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, and Solarfest Singer Songwriter Showcase.

HSHC eyes new, larger shelter

By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com The Humane Society for Hamilton County has begun plans to move its operation from 1721 Pleasant St., Noblesville, to a land doPETS nation adjacent to Ind. 37.

HSHC Executive Director Rebecca Stevens said Brad and Carey Riley donated three acres on Herriman Boulevard in Noblesville between its properties of Recreation Unlimited and Indiana Elite Cheer & Tumbling. Stevens said plans are to build a new, 20,000-square-foot shelter on 1.5 aces and use the other half to create a public dog park.

“It’s a great property for exposure and visibility,” she said. “We’ll design (the dog park) with membership fees as a revenue generator for the shelter. It’ll be a place our shelter dogs can exercise and get outside, which we don’t have the space to do today.”

Stevens said the plans for the move are still in the early stages.

“We’re working on research, best practices in terms of design,” she said. “We haven’t launched a capital campaign yet.”

In February, Stevens visited a shelter in Greenville, S.C. “We really liked the visual exterior of Greenville,” she said. “It’s a steel structure and there are all steel buildings on Herriman Boulevard, which is much less expensive to build. We want a place that is very family-friendly, that people

are excited to visit.”

HSHC moved into its current location of less than 10,000 square-feet in October 2006.

“We were out of space with the animals we had the day we moved in. The county did a good job designing an animal control facility,” she said, adding that the facility wasn’t built for long-term inhabitants but HSHC is a no-kill shelter. “We did the best we could all these years … We want to ensure all animals are getting the best chance for a second chance.”

Stevens said the new space will allow for other services and programs they currently can’t offer at the shelter. The new facility will be funded 100 percent by the HSHC. “We’re not looking to the county or any municipalities to help us fund it,” she said. “We’re not looking for taxpayer dollars.

Hamilton County Sheriff Mark Bowen said the county is not immune to rise in heroin use in Indiana. prevention To raise awareness, there will be a free forum for families, students and community members from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 21 at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 Fourth Ave. SE. The concept for the forum came from five class members from the Hamilton County Leadership Academy.

Speakers include Hamilton County/Boone County Task Force members, political leaders and those affected by the drug. State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis), one of the speakers, will talk about the overall heroin epidemic that Indiana is experiencing.

“It’s a very inexpensive drug,” Merritt said. “It’s highly addictive and we’re working on saving people that mistakingly overdose. Last year’s lifeline law that added in EMTs can cary Naloxone and Narcan as an overdose antidote. We allowed first responders last year to have it. This year we have a bill to allow civilians to have it and administer it.”

Merritt said every community is faced with this crisis.

“We’re trying to bring it out into the open so we can solve it,” Merritt said.

Merritt said a hit of heroin can be purchased for about $5 now and it’s readily available.

“It was never spoke about, always swept under the rug,” Bardach stated, in referring to how many overlook drug problems in the schools.

Her organization’s advocacy team testified this year for Sen. Merritt to help pass SB-406.

Sgt. Tom Weger, public officer/education for Fishers police dept., said they see all types of drugs like any other city would.

“I wouldn’t consider it (heroin) to be major problem in Fishers,” Weger said. “But it is something we are concerned about, and it’s on our radar.”

Pink & White Party brings heightened sense of style

By Michelle Williams • news@currentincarmel.com St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, founded by many members of the Carmel community, has supported Eskenazi Health since 1907, but women the group is hosting a brand new event this year. In conjunction with this year’s Decorators’ Show House tour, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is hosting a special event on May 1 at noon called the Pink & White Party.

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild hosted its first Decorators’ Boles Show House in 1962, making 2015 the 54th annual event. Each year, it is the flagship fundraising event that has enabled the Guild to raise nearly $12 million dollars in support of Eskenazi Health.

The Pink & White Party is a special event to honor the support of Eskenazi diagnostic programs and services to treat breast cancer and pulmonary disease. Many breast cancer and lung disease survivors will be recognized at the luncheon.

Guests attending the Pink & White Party will hear a presentation from Jennifer Boles, who is a contributing editor to Veranda and House Beautiful magazines. She has also authored an awardwinning blog, “The Peak of Chic” and the popular

TIF-backed bonds for Midtown

Ever since Justin Moffett, of Old Town Design Group, announced he development wants to start on the $130 million Midtown Plan, people have asked: When will it be built?

There is one issue that needs to be decided before any shovels can hit the dirt – financing for a parking garage.

Moffett said the 15-acre office will house several new office spaces, including several corporate headquarters, which means a multi-story garage will be needed to provide parking without a sprawling lot. He plans to use tax increment financing, which is a way to capture increases in property tax values, to help pay for a bond to construct the project.

Moffett said everything will be decided soon, but he doesn’t expect there will be a problem and that tax revenue from this project will help pay off other municipal debt, such as constructing The Palladium.

“Any increase in revenue is a positive for the city. We all know that,” he said. “So I don’t think the council wants to miss an opportunity to create a TIF district here. It’s our belief that nobody is questioning whether we are TIF-ing the project. It’s just a matter of what’s the split.”

ings under construction by the end of the year.

He said a parking garage takes six months to build. He said it will also take the same amount of time to build a new facility for Miller Auto Care, a business he agreed to relocate when he bought its building. He said both of those can be built before the large office buildings are complete, which can take up to 18 months to finish.

Before anything can begin, he said he needs the Carmel City Council to approve creating a TIF district. So he’s working to present a plan.

“As soon as we start digging, we lose the opportunity to TIF the project,” he said.

Art in the Afternoon is April 29

By Michelle Williams • news@currentincarmel.com When someone says, “Let me paint you a picture,” that picture is often painted with words.

Stop by the new Art in the diversion Afternoon event hosted by the Carmel Arts Council, and you may actually get a painting.

Art in the Afternoon is the only small fundraising event that the Carmel Arts Council will host the entire year. Traditionally, the group has hosted an annual luncheon to raise funds for its teacher grants and other community outreach programs. Last year, the council decided to try something new, and Art in the Afternoon was born.

On April 29 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., The Mansion at Oak Hill will open its doors to community members who will come to view, admire and even purchase locally crafted art. Vivian Lawhead, President of the Carmel Arts Council, said that the event will feature both traditional and contemporary forms of art from more than 25 local artists. Lawhead explained that the intention of moving from a luncheon event to an art exposition was to promote the artists and their work. Additionally, local high school students will provide musical entertainment for the afternoon.

Lawhead described the types of art a patron might find at Art in the Afternoon this year. In addition to art in its traditional sense, she says community members will encounter locally

Opportunities also exist for further involvement with the Carmel Arts Council. “We’re always looking for new guild members to help at special events or in our gallery,” said.

Community members interested in attending Art in the Afternoon may purchase tickets for $30 each at CarmelArtsCouncil.org. The cost of the ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine, appetizers and dessert. Ticket sales also support the annual community involvement efforts of the council.

Ex-Hutterites visit Carmel

The Nine are a group of former Hutterites who banded together and shared their books story recently in Carmel.

Titus Waldner, one of The Nine, said people in the Hutterites groups contend they believe in the Bible and Jesus Christ.

“In the colony we were shocked because we were obeying the original tenets that the Hutterites were founded on. So in the end, the Hutterites say they are Christians but the actions prove they are not,” Titus said.

The Nine were all between the ages of 17 and 25 when they left the socialistic, communal society. The Nine wrote their first book “Hutterites: Our Story to Freedom” through their own publishing company, Risen Son Publishing. Each wrote their personal story. The Nine’s second book “Since We Told the Truth: Our Life Can Never Be The Same” was published in 2014. Several of the authors held a book signing in Carmel on April 18.

The Hutterites, similar to Menonites have approximately 50,000 members, located in middle and western Canada, and upper Midwest and Northwest United States.

Titus, 27, left his Hutterite colony in North Dakota when he was 18 and Junia Waldner, 30, left her colony in Manitoba, Canada, when she was 22. The Waldners are not sure if they are distantly related as Waldner is one of the 12 surnames that the Hutterites use. Junia has two

sisters that are part of The Nine and Titus has a brother.

Junia said when Hutterites leave, they leave with the few possessions they have.

Titus said the all money that Hutterites make goes into a bank account controlled by three key people.

“Everyone else works for the colony and works for $3 a month as an allowance,” Titus said. “They provide for your housing and food, but beyond that you don’t have any means to live independently outside of the colony.”

Junia said there is sexual and domestic abuse going on but it’s kept very quiet because they don’t want law enforcement involved.

“The women think it’s wrong to go against their husband because they have been taught to submit to their husband,” Junia said.

obituary Dietrich E. Scholz, 81, Carmel, died April 6, surrounded by his family. He was born November 4, 1933, in Berlin, Germany, the son of the late Hans and Elisabeth (Binet) Scholz. He married his sweetheart, Ursula (Soerensen) Scholz, on March 17, 1962. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2002. Dieter came to the United States via Ellis Island in 1957, and he served in the U.S. Army, where he perfected his baking skills. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Indianapolis, where he owned and Scholz operated two different locations of Gourmet Bakery and Tiffany’s Bakery in Glendale.

Dieter is survived by his daughter, Angie Hall, her husband Steve, and their children, Adrienne, Nikki, Shannon, and Stevie; his daughter, Debbie Wiggins, and her children, Natalie, Eric, and Zachary; siblings, twin brother Hans Scholz, Ursula “Uschi” Bamberger, Evi Henrich, and Berndt Scholz; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by his brother, Eberhardt Scholz, sister, Marianne Keul; and brother, Lutz Scholz. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and thanks for the excellent care provided over the years by Dr. Napoleon Maminta and Dr. David Rardon. ‘Exploration’ will bring kids outside April 25

The Camel Clay Parks & Recreation staff wants to encourage youth to connect kids with nature.

“Spring is a great time to get everyone outdoors,” said Lindsay Labas, Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation marketing director. “We want to focus on younger generations, those individuals who are going to start with parks now and throughout their life span. We want them to utilize the trail network and see how plants work into what we do on a daily basis through our parks maintenance program.”

Exploration Celebration, a free program, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 25 at Central Park East Woods.

“Our focus is on nature, really getting kids outdoors at a young age,” Labas said.

There will be a storyteller from Carmel Clay Public Library who will be reading nature-themed books to all of the participants. The participants will then work on nature crafts that will tie into the stories that they tell. The library representatives will bring books children can borrow for the day. The event is for all ages, Labas said.

“But we typically see participants in that preschool age and younger kids,” Labas said. “The story time will be off in the grassy area off from

the louder events. We’ll have insects and bugs we’ll be talking about. We’ll be showcasing some of the plants. There will be a craft area where kids will be able to color and do crafts that ties along with a butterfly migration cycle. They will get some seeds that they can take along and plant at home and watch their tree grow.”

There also will be a scavenger hunt, using a booklet each participant receives.

Falk joins Art Splash

Furniture maker and woodcarver Peter Falk is the latest Indiana Artisan to bring his work to Carmel on a permadesign district nent basis.

Falk, who works out of Falk Wood Studio outside Lafayette near Cutler, has accepted an invitation to join Art Splash Gallery. The gallery, located at 111 W. Main St., Suite 40, in Carmel’s Arts and Design District, will regularly feature selections of Falk’s work among its exhibits.

“I’ll be having on display a chair and a couple different end tables as well as some smaller everyday-use items and some carving and marquetry I have in the form of boxes,” Falk said.

The April edition of the Arts and Design District’s Second Saturday Gallery Walk was Falk’s first event as a member of the Art Splash family.

It was a previous installment of the event that led to him joining the gallery.

“It was just about a month ago at the last Gallery Walk there was a vacant space in the district and they asked me to be a part of the Gallery Walk even though I wasn’t a member or had my own gallery there,” Falk said. “That was my first opportunity to be part of the district’s events and that opened the door to being there at Art Splash.”

trees from the region.

“I’ve been trying to use more local or native wood wherever possible and I’m developing relationships with sawyers or people that have saw mills to cut logs into lumber,” he said.

A recent commission — for two end tables and a coffee table made of cherry and sycamore — aided Falk’s efforts.

“That ended up leading to us getting our own saw mill and I was able to find the trees,” he said. “That was within the past year and I’m excited about moving towards milling more of my own wood so I can have the ability to cut it the certain ways to best reveal the grain.”

Pro-life group hosts movie screening

The CHS Teens for Life club schools will present the movie at 3:40 p.m. on April 22 in the school’s Studio Theatre. The public is invited and there is a $1 admission charge with free popcorn and soda.

“It’s a great movie for multiple reasons,” said Tragesser, Teens for Life vice president.

Tragesser “It’s very well put together and very well-made movie. It was a beautiful thing to watch.”

Tragesser said the 2006 movie follows a journey where three individuals discover the beauty of life.

“I like it because it goes through the three different parts of life, the value of life as a child, the value of life as an adult and learning how to enjoy where you at it and the value of life as unborn child and how that is a valuable thing as well.”

Jon Kane, a Carmel High School art teacher, is the Teens for Life co-sponsor with Margaret Winans. This is the ninth year of the program and Kane and Winans have been involved from the start. Carmel senior Patrick Wrobel is the Teens for Life president.

York City of the life of three individuals and the choices of those three lives,” Kane said. “It’s a touchy and moving film that leaves a profound message. The actors are believable and it’s not a preachy film. It’s a totally relatable film with great character development.”

Kane has invited other churches and Teens for Life groups to the movie showing.

“It’s a way for us to celebrate life, which is what our group does from conception to natural death,” Kane said.

The CHS Teens for Life has 44 members this school year.

Some Teens for Life attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 22, the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

When silence is not golden

Most of us probably forgot about the silence with which congressional investigators were greeted when they asked then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton if she used a private e-mail account while in that position. We had … until a news report last week brought it to light. The question, in a letter from House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and first reported by the New York Times, was posed seven weeks before Clinton’s tenure ended. When the State Department eventually responded to Issa’s demand in March 2013, nearly two months after she left office, officials also ignored the question about Clinton’s digital habits. “Given Clinton’s admission that she used a personal account and a private server exclusively as secretary, news of this apparent dodge adds to a scandal that has cost the Democratic presidential candidate dearly in polls. As the drip of damaging details continues, when and in what venue Clinton will address the growing scandal is the question,” Fox News reported. Investigation? What investigation? It doesn’t surprise us that a USA Today poll last week showed powerful craving among Democrats for an alternative to candidate Clinton. “A 55 percent majority of Democrats says it’s ‘very important’ to them to see strong challenges to Hillary Clinton for the presidential nomination. Another 25 percent calls it ‘somewhat important.’ ” We find that incredibly telling.

••• Vice President Joe Biden fired a shot across the Clinton camp’s bow when he told The Detroit News last week: “I haven’t made up my mind on (seeking the nomination). I have plenty of time to do that. … (President Barack Obama) and I care about what has to get done in the next two, three months, and when you run for president you’ve got to run for president … .” No giveaway there. Said Obama to an Ohio TV station, “… I think she would be an excellent president.” Was that a shot across Biden’s bow?

In search of a problem

Were it not for the millions of dollars wasted and hundreds of people harmed by the debacle, one could be amused by the recent flap associated with the aborted legislative actions by the good folks at the Statehouse. One can understand, many of us believe that they “should” be doing “something.” Have we pushed these folks to seek problems which they might be able to “solve” with a legislative solution? With the passing of each and every year, hundreds of new pages are added to the Code books. And, millions of pieces of mail are sent to our homes extoling the virtues of this fine work. Unfortunately, the effort too often ends up being a solution in search of a problem.

“We’re from the Government; and, we’re here to help!” Alas, the proclamation has come to be joke outlining the abject failure of many of our leaders to meet expectations. To be fair, we have unrealistically high anticipations of these folks. As our collective national faith in religion wanes, could it be that we are substituting one

deity for another? Do we pray to government to fix problems beyond the realm of even the most prominent of elected human officials? If so, what can we reasonably expect our authorities to be able to accomplish?

Safety? Protection? Security? Perhaps. Education? Infrastructure? Opportunity? Maybe.

Equality? Equivalence? Equity? Could be. Even as we lose confidence in the structures and institutions upon which our society is founded (look no further than voting rates as support for this supposition), we seem to demand more and more naïve wish lists from those who represent us. Sure, they make promises – often the kind of long-tales that would make Pinocchio blush – but, we love the assurances – a lot. Have we passed the point of self-reliance? Maybe the government can tell us.

Back in the fifties, I’d plop down in front of the TV and watch shows like “Gunsmoke,” “What’s My Line,” or “The Jack Benny Program.”

Deciding what to watch was simple. I looked through the TV Guide, made my selection, and tuned in, seldom rising to change the channel.

I tied a string to the electric cord connected to the small black-and-white set in my bedroom. At night, when I started dozing off, I’d give the string a tug and pull the plug out of the socket. Sadly, I never got any credit for inventing the first TV remote.

In those days, watching TV was relaxing.

But now, I feel anxious when I turn on the set.

When I grew up, there were only three or four channels, which made the selection process in those days much easier. Not only that, but if you happened to miss an episode of, let’s say, “Twilight Zone,” it didn’t really matter. Why? Because there would be something completely new and creepy the following week. But now, you have to watch these shows beginning with the very first episode or you will be lost (“Lost” is a good example).

What’s worse is that if you try to watch dozens of series at the same time, it becomes impossible to keep all the plots and characters straight. Imagine reading 24 books simultaneously. At least we have DVRs to help us manage our viewing time. That makes things much easier … sort of.

“Mary Ellen, when I watched “True Detective” last night, I didn’t recognize the characters.”

“Because, Dick, I think you recorded “True Crime” by mistake. Or maybe “American Crime?”

“Or maybe I taped “American Greed?” No, I think it was “The Americans.”

“Dick, did you record “Masterpiece Theatre” for me?”

“I recorded “Masters of Sex” by mistake. I watched one episode already. Why does a guy have to prepare a sumptuous meal just to get his wife in the mood?”

“I think you were watching “Master Chef.”

“Well, I did record Kevin Spacey in “House of Lies.”

“He’s in “House of Cards.”

“I miss just plain “House.”

I really don’t want to watch all these shows, but I hear people talking about them at work and at parties, and I want to be as culturally hip as possible.

Right now, our DVR has a couple dozen programs on it. “We have so much to watch,” said Mary Ellen the other day. “We need to stay home an entire weekend and finally get through it.”

We used to say that about cleaning the basement.

‘Visionaries’ Brainard, Worrell good for city

Editor, I am writing in support of my friend, Jeff Worrell, in his run for city council, in the southeast district. And yes, Jeff is also a friend of, and endorsed by Mayor Brainard … a friendship which developed as Jeff has worked his butt off for Carmel as a volunteer, for many years.

As a resident of Carmel for over 48 years now, and also as a business owner in Carmel, I want to proclaim that if not for visionaries like the mayor, and Jeff Worrell, Carmel would still be living in the past, instead of ranking among the best places to live in America!

The mayor’s opponent and Jeff’s, (Luci Snyder) have fought the mayor at every turn. Both of these opponents have of course, wanted the mayor’s job...which is probably where that opposition mostly comes from. The only way they

have of getting our attention apparently, is to turn everyday sensible financial decisions, like helping the CRC refinance its debt, into “The sky is falling” verbiage, which simply isn’t true, or necessary.

Jeff, as in all things he does, is running a positive campaign, and is not going to bash his opponent with negativity or half-truths … which is not true of her campaign this far.

As a concerned citizen, I want candidates like Jeff, that are not only going to stand up for what is right, even if it may be in disagreement with the mayor, but also who will work together with the mayor to carry his vision forward....not fight everything he suggests....just because he was the one suggesting it. It’s time for the city council to start playing for the same team.

RE A D ERS ’ VIEW From a developer to a financial leader Editor, This is something you see with every major corporation in the world. The board of directors appoints a CEO to maximize profits and maintain the company’s values and brand. Sometimes a company goes through a growth phase and uses debt to expand through mergers and acquisitions. When it comes time to shore up their balance sheet and strengthen their credit rating through sound financial oversight, the board appoints a new CEO. When I look at these scenarios in the private sector I can’t help think of our beloved city of Carmel.

For the past 20 years the city of Carmel has been run by a developer. No amount of money has been too much to accomplish his vision. 95 million taxpayer dollars for the Palladium, 106 million taxpayer dollars for Keystone Parkway, millions more in taxpayer dollars spent for roundabouts, statues, etc. All this has made Carmel

a very unique place to live. Now the bills are coming due and the developer does not know how to quit spending. We are at a point where we either take a different path or our company will no longer be solvent. If Carmel becomes insolvent, taxes will need to be raised. The company known as the City of Carmel and its board of directors consisting of Carmel voters need to take action. We need to go from a developer to a financial leader with sound money management experience.

It is time for Carmel to reduce spending and shore up our finances. It is time to effectively manage our cash flow, so we can keep taxes low and put our city on a sound sustainable fiscal path. Carmel needs to change course for the long term fiscal health and future of our city. It is time for Carmel to hire a financial leader, time for Carmel to hire Rick Sharp.

RE A D ER ’ S VIEW Council made a well-informed decision Editor, With Westfield’s good fortune any community in the country could have built our new industry, but they didn’t. Our leadership, working with experts in the sports and tourism industries along with municipal economist, recognized its potential as an economic magnet. We beat the world to a winning formula: now 26 baseball/softball diamonds, 31 multi-use/soccer fields and by next fall a public/private year-round indoor facility with three soccer/multi use fields, locker rooms, restaurant, observation decks, a store and conference rooms. We’re also getting a private field house for basketball and volleyball. This Grand Park has already, in its first season, attracted enough neighboring commercial assessed value investment to produce nearly a third of the tax revenue necessary to service the city’s outlay – and it’s only the beginning.

I’m writing this because the detractors who are running for office in Westfield are trying to halt our opportunities. They are using fictional math to make their points. Please be wary of this hand full of folks with big voices. With little exception they have not attended the open discussions that they could have and they do not know what they are talking about. The council knows

that the cash-flow will be there. They know that state law residential taxes cannot go over the 1 percent cap, where they are now, unless you again vote for a school tax referendum.

Most of the city councilors have listened and are keen on what it takes to attract desired tax-paying businesses. Above all is Westfield’s great fortune to have found a business seasoned visionary for mayor. Andy Cook recognized early the greatest opportunity any community could wish for. It took positive thinking and drive to accumulate the right teams, specialist and investors to put together. Andy is a natural born CEO. By definition a CEO is a leader who has a vision and communicates it well. A CEO has the will and nerve to stand by one’s principals and builds a team to manage the vision as if it were their own.

Have confidence, we will grow up into a fine, refreshed city that has worked for eight years to identify and keep its heritage. Can you imagine a more interesting clean industry to support?

Good luck Westfield. I beg you to stick with our successes.

Teeth-chattering change Commentary by Danielle Wilson I don’t like change. Maybe it’s my sense of order and predilection towards the mundane, but varying from routine makes me humor anxious, particularly when I don’t initiate it. I also can’t stand going to the dentist. Too many cavities as a child and the ginger-propensity for needing more anesthesia than normal people (it’s true!) have left me with a lifetime of traumatic memories. So imagine my distress when I arrived for my semiannual checkup and discovered my usual hygienist had retired . . . the day before. On the outside I appeared sincere in my welcoming of New Lady, but on the inside I was calculating how fast I could sprint back to my van.

Here’s the deal. I’ve had to work really hard to overcome my fears of dentistry, and a large part of my “therapy” has been consistency. I’ve seen the same guy for seventeen years, and he’s had the same hygienist for most of that. I trust them both implicitly. They know and understand my “issues,” and when I start a conversation with, “I scoured the house for something to calm myself down, but all I could find was expired liquid Tylenol with codeine,” they don’t call CPS. Is it any wonder I found fault immediately with New Lady? She was condescending, arrogant, and used medical terminology that of course I didn’t understand. She declared “You grind your teeth at night” and “Your gums are receding”

without a hint of empathy. She also made it quite clear that I wasn’t doing a good enough job flossing. How dare she! Didn’t New Lady know how things work? Granted, it was her first day and I was only her second patient, but she was doing everything wrong. Where were the “there, there’s” and the distracting questions and the cheers for at least attempting to take decent care of my teeth? I couldn’t wait for the dentist to come in so I could “have a word.”

But then an interesting thing happened. I looked at my watch and realized the cleaning had taken about half the time as usual. I also wasn’t as stiff as I normally am, the aftermath of having clenched my fists and shoulders for 45 minutes of aggressive plaque removal. Thinking back, I hadn’t actually come out of my chair at all, a personal record. And, New Lady had performed an oral cancer exam, which old hygienist had never done. I couldn’t believe it, but in those few moments of quiet, I came to appreciate the outstanding job performed by New Lady.

Lesson learned? Change doesn’t have to be bad, and, on occasion, change can even be good.

I still hate the dentist though.

Dredge chicken pieces in the flour mixture, dip in the egg mixture, then press in the breadcrumb mixture to coat. Arrange in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle 2 tablespoons butter evenly over chicken. Bake 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until coating is golden brown and chicken juices run clear.

My journey to plant-based nutrition began in the year 2000. This is when my family took a trip to California. I longed to nutrition be near the ocean for stress relief. During our trip I found many opportunities to eat vegan. I learned that I enjoyed it, but had no way of knowing how to continue the process once I returned home.

After returning home, I went back to eating the way my family did. I didn't give it much thought after this. I continued to eat the way my family did for many years to come. Then in 2008, after going out to social events with friends I would come home sick. This happened so often I started to think there had to be a better way for me to live so that I wouldn't feel consistently sick and miserable. I began to search for a way to feel better. I switched to a vegetarian diet.

Then in 2010 I suffered a job loss. After the initial shock of the situation I realized this would

L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid used by the body to transport long chain fatty acids to the power sources in your cells called mitochondria where fat calories get burned for energy. While short and medium chain fats can enter the mitochondrial membrane by themselves, the long-chain fatty acids need carnitine to transport it. These fats are a major source of muscular energy, and supplementing with L-carnitine can increase energy levels and muscular strength.

If you’re among those people avoiding exercise because of the pain and exhaustion that often comes afterward, research has shown that adequate intakes of the L-carnitine may not only lengthen and optimize workouts, but also reduce pain in the days following for all types of athletes, including “weekend warriors”.

Several studies have confirmed L-carnitine’s relationship to exercise. Researchers have tested people at all athletic levels, with and without

adequate L-carnitine, for indicators of recovery.

They found that people had significantly less post-workout pain and tenderness and less post-exercise muscle damage with L-carnitine supplementation than with placebo. In one study, 75 percent of participants saw a 20 percent improved ability to exert energy within 25 minutes after exercising.

Besides just boosting fat metabolism, L-carnitine is also great for supporting brain function, and helps protect the brain from age and stress related damage to help it function better. Most of the scientific literature describes effective doses from 1 to 4 grams of L-carnitine. For targeting brain benefits, studies suggest taking 1 to 3 grams of acetyl L-carnitine daily.

No lolling about with grammar Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “Hi, Grammar Guy. I read your reports and, I make a point to check out your comments every week. grammar guy I cut them out, and am putting them in a binder, for reference.

As a person that enjoys tutoring the English language to Hispanics in my area, I really try to teach good grammar. The kids from the past are picking up the ‘Street-English,’ too, so when I see them during the summer, I start noticing the changes. They use ‘duh’ for ‘the,’ ‘I seen’ for ‘I saw,’ ’di-dent’ for didn’t, and etc. I really cringe at the last one.

I was using the vocabulary lists on shortvowel-sounds. We came across ‘loll.’ I told the student it was ‘a period of calm in the midst of a storm or pause in music that is playing.’ Then got to the short-vowel U sounds, and saw ‘lull.’

Right away I knew my mistake. I realized I did not know the word ‘loll’. I got out the dictionary to compare the two words.

‘Loll’ is to hang out, dangle loosely, or droop. I was not familiar with this word.

I am not afraid to get out the dictionary, in front of my students, and admit ‘I don’t know.’

Mostly, I use it to get the Spanish definition so I can translate the English better to them. I am retired, so this is just a fun way to use my extra time. Have been doing this for 15 years. Keep up

“Loll” is actually a very interesting word. In addition to the definition you provided above, there is also “angle of loll,” which in sailing is the term for a ship that cannot remain upright stably.

More interesting for us landlubbers, though, is a unique use of “loll” you’ll only find in America: “lollygag.” The Oxford English Dictionaries estimate “loll” entered the language in late Middle English – around the 1600s. But “lollygag” doesn’t show up until the 1840s, and only in America.

If you’ve ever been accused of lollygagging, you’ll know what it means: to dawdle; to fool around; to waste time. You can see how it evolved from the intransitive verb form of “loll,” which means to sit, lie, or stand in a lazy, relaxed way.

We Americans love to play around with and modify the language – and that’s great. While you’re out there fighting the good fight, you may even come across the next Americanism that’ll sweep the continent. If you do … let me know!

Ezra church: Saintly protection?

In 2015, members of a small church in Ezra, Syria, are celebrating 1,500 years of worshipping God in the same building. Some attravel tribute this extraordinary longevity to the contents of a special box.

Ezra lies about 50 miles south of Damascus along the western edge of the Hauran, a fertile plateau that played a role in the early development of agriculture. Today, Ezra is best known for its domed Church of St. George. The square buildingis made of basaltic rock and includes two inscribed octagonal structures, the inner one supporting the dome. An inscription between two crosses over the door says the Greek Orthodox Church was erected in 515 A.D. on the site of a pagan temple. Except for a nineteenth century reconstruction of its damaged dome, the building remains essentially unchanged since its erection.

Colorful icons and gold vigil lamps adorn the sanctuary, but the church’s most prized possession is a box, draped with a rich red cloth, resting behind the altar. A stone plaque leaning against the base of the box bears the iconic image of St. George killing a dragon. The inscription above the entrance says the church was built to house the remains of St. George and church members believe remains of the martyred St. George are in the box. How much remains of him is not so clear.

George, is said to hold his body. His head has been claimed by churches in both Greece and Italy.

The Ezra church has a distinction none of the other sites claiming St. George’s remains can match – it is one of the oldest continuously functioning church buildings in the world. Some attribute the church’s long survival to the admiration Syrian Muslims also have for St. George, the patron saint of not only England and Georgia but Palestine and Egypt. Members of Ezra’s

Church of St. George look instead to their draped box, topped with tokens of gratitude. For them, St. George, whose feast day is April 23, has protected this ancient house of worship.

Showerhead ideas and options Commentary by David Decker For many of us, our days begin or end with a nice, hot shower. With that much popularity and use, it’s no surprise that indoors showerhead designs have taken a leap forward. In the past, most showerheads were stationary and mounted at an angle on the wall.

But the days of the standard showerhead fixture are long gone, and in its place are new designs and innovations that add to the level of luxury and comfort in your home.

If you’re considering a redesign, you’ll first need to determine the amount of space you have to work with, and you can begin the process of choosing your showerhead (or showerheads).

Below is a list of popular showerhead options: • Standard Wall Mount: It’s a classic setup, but you can modernize it by selecting a showerhead with a moveable head or with different massage settings.

• Multiple Wall Mounts: Showers shared by two people could benefit from two showerheads with adjustable water pressure settings. Most of the time, dual showerheads are installed either facing each other or side-by-side.

• Handheld Showers: If you are installing dual showerheads, you’ll probably want to make sure that one (or both) of the showerheads is a handheld model, because they are so versatile and easy-to-use. They are also very handy for washing your hair, pets, or even rinsing the shower unit itself.

• Rain Showerheads: These models are designed to be affixed to the ceiling and give off a spa-like feeling. A rain showerhead provides a water stream that comes from directly overhead. Some rain showerheads are installed flush to the ceiling, which works well in shower spaces where the ceiling is lower or cannot accommodate a wall-mount head.

• Sliding Bar: This showerhead moves up and down along a wall-mounted base to accommodate for height differences in users.

This is a great option for a bathroom shared among multiple family members.

• Jets and Body Sprays: For added luxury, you might choose to install jets or body sprays. You might think of these body sprays as Jacuzzis you stand up in. Heads or sprays are installed vertically on the walls to create a crisscross water pattern that delivers pressure wherever you choose. Some models can even be controlled by a remote control system.

Showerheads are rated using a system called a flow rate, or the number of gallons of water they spray per minute. Showerheads can use upwards of 8 gpm if they are a model with a heavy water usage system. However, you can seek out low-flow showerheads, which have been designed to save water in an environmentally friendly way. Low-flow models use only 2.5 gpm.
