Palladium construction planned news@currentincarmel.com An estimated $140,000 of additional construction work is scheduled to take place at the Palladium later this month. The project is not planned to affect the Palladium’s upcoming performance calendar.

The construction includes retrofits to the roof trusses. The work is estimated to be completed during a three-week period and was recommended during a review that took place as part of the ongoing litigation resulting from construction issues that were discovered in June 2009.

According to city officials, payments will be made on the construction with funds retained from the original project.

City representative Nancy Heck declined an interview request at the advice of the city’s legal counsel as a result of the ongoing litigation.

Road closure at 96th Street and Towne Road - On or after Monday, the intersection of 96th Street and Towne Road will be closed for the construction of a new roundabout intersection. The road is scheduled to be closed to all through traffic for 75 days, tentatively opening for traffic on or after June 29. During the closure, local traffic should use the signed detour route of 86th Street to Ditch Road to 106th Street.

Time to volunteer for CarmelFest Commentary by Jeff Worrell If there is one reoccurring theme I hear during my winter life in Carmel, it is the often repeated comment, “I really should do something to help out at CarmelFest next year.” News Flash! Next year is here, arrived, right around the corner, and I hear your request and wish to help you comply.

The CarmelFest Organizing Committee sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carmel is already hard at work planning, plotting and dreaming. It takes more than 400 volunteers to successfully pull off the largest single annual event which takes place every July 3 and 4.

Volunteer Coordinator Sally Bauer is actively recruiting volunteers for variable length shifts at www.CarmelFest.net – click the volunteer tab.

There you can register and define what types of volunteer effort you think best suits you.

Spark Buttons are a primary fundraiser to support the spectacular My107.9 Fireworks at CarmelFest Launched by Firestone. They come in either an unlighted version for $3 or lighted for $6. Both versions contain thousands of dollars of coupons (slight exaggeration) which ultimately means Spark Button owners make money. Anyway, the Spark Button Committee led

Specifically, he needs help preparing lighted and unlighted buttons for sale by matching some 20 different merchant coupons in a plastic bag with

Or, if you can take 25 or 50 buttons to your soccer team, girl scout troop, work or PTO meeting and convince your friends how important Spark Buttons are to the success of CarmeFest, you will be a volunteer hero. Cyclists and drivers must get along Commentary by Robert Annis With spring finally here, so are the legions of cyclists – me among them – on Hamilton and Boone county roads. Unfortunately, like most years, tensions with local drivers likely will rise with the temperature.

Nebo Ridge Bicycles at 106th Street and Michigan Road has one of the largest shop rides in the nation. On a Tuesday or Thursday evening in the summer, it’s not unusual to see up to 200 riders departing from the rear of the store.

With that many cyclists on the streets, there’s bound to be some pushback from drivers who have enjoyed sole dominance on the roads for years. Exacerbating the issue are a small number of bike riders who disregard traffic rules and safety by flying through stop signs, riding into the opposing lane of traffic and more.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Dept. received multiple complaints about riders in 2012, and the Zionsville Police Dept. threatened to ticket several riders in the Austin Oaks subdivision last year.

I’ve ridden in many of these large-group rides – I was a member of the Nebo Ridge racing team for the last two years – so I know what happens firsthand. Before each ride, shop owner Tim Cassidy warns riders to obey the rules of the road and be considerate of drivers. But not every cyclist follows that advice. After Cassidy’s typical pre-ride speech last year, I remember one rider scoffed, “When drivers stop running signs, I will too.”

Full disclosure: I’ve rolled through stop signs before, and will, in all honesty, do so again, but only after looking both ways to ensure no cars are barreling toward me. Most times, drivers at a four-way stop will wave me through, anyway.

Cyclists ride in large packs so they can draft off one another and lessen the affects of a headwind. When the wind is coming from the side, riders will often form an echelon – a few riders serve as windbreak on the end, protecting the other riders who fan out to the left or right, depending on the wind direction. It’s tough work for the riders fighting the wind, which is why too few riders want to do it.

potentially losing the main group, weaker riders prefer to continue the echelon into the opposite lane, creating a safety hazard. When cars appear from the opposite direction, most riders will get over with plenty of time to spare, but I’ve seen too many close calls. I’d rather ride into the wind alone than witness some guy riding left of the yellow line and getting splattered by a Ford F150.

My good friend and Nebo rider Jason Pope believes he has a responsibility to help teach the offending riders.

“I don’t believe that the size of the group necessarily has to contribute to the problem; I’ve seen huge groups ride in an orderly fashion,” Pope said. “Any ride needs a set of ground rules that everyone agrees to follow. We all need to follow them and politely call each other out when we make bad decisions.”

That’s not to say cyclists are always at fault. In fact, far from it. I’ve witnessed impatient drivers pass in a blind corner, nearly hitting another car head on, and others drivers pass cyclists riding in a perfectly legal double paceline, swerve in front of the group and hit their brakes, possibly to cause a pile-up and potentially injure a biker.

How can a roadway détente be reached? Understanding and patience go a long way. Cyclists should obey the rules of the road and be considerate of drivers who are trying to safely pass them. Drivers should be cautious when passing a group of riders; getting home 30 seconds later isn’t going to be the end of the world.

Armed robbers still on the loose news@currentincarmel.com At publication time, police were still searching for two suspects who robbed the Forum Credit Union the morning of April 1.

Witnesses said that two males entered the bank at 2259 E. 116th St. armed with handguns and demanded cash. The suspects then fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Carmel Police set up a perimeter and searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspects. Easter egg hunt a success

By Colleen Peregrin • news@currentincarmel.com Eggs abounded at the Clay Terrace Easter Egg Hunt on March 30. St. Francis Health Carmel and Franciscan Immediate Care sponsored the second annual hunt at Clay Terrace. It featured thousands of eggs strewn around the grassy knoll behind Mitchell’s Fish Market.

A number of area vendors took part in the event from David and Mary’s Salon, which provided

glitter tattoos for the kids, to Mitchell’s Fish Market, with samples of carrot cake. Photos with the Easter Bunny, provided by Lauren Weghort Photography, were in high demand all day. Also present were Big-E-Foot from the Indiana Ice and a car from the Carmel Police Dept. The DJ played tunes for the kids and people danced along to songs like the "Cupid Shuffle." Kids up to 10-years-old were able to search for the eggs while their families enjoyed the fun of a successful event.

Gourmet oil and vinegar store opens in the district

By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com The Olive Mill, a small batch and artisanal olive oil and balsamic vinegar store, is now open for business at Main Street and Range Line Road in Carmel’s Arts & Design District.

With successful locations in Geneva, Ill., and Saugatuck, Mich., The Olive Mill now is bringing its internationally sourced, gourmet oils and vinegars to Carmel. The store focuses on customer sampling and a passion for both olive oil and balsamic vinegar. During the coming weeks, the store will reach its product capacity, featuring a changing slate of more than 20 vinegars and 24 olive oils.

Beyond the business’s two primary components, The Olive Mill also sells gift baskets, recipes, gourmet spices and more.

The store’s general manager, Stephen Hannah, recently relocated to Indianapolis to take over operations of the new location. During the last several years, he has worked for Olive Mill owners Debbie and Ed O’Connell at both the Saugatuck and Geneva locations.

Hannah sources the store’s oil and vinegars from a wide array of farmers and importers including some in Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Greece and California.

Removing the ‘r-word’

2013 Days of Remembrance Ceremony “Remembering Stories of Survival.”

By Maddie Scott • news@currentincarmel.com On March 22, Guerin Catholic High School hosted a Respect Rally to help raise awareness for those with special needs and to build awareness for society to stop and think about its use of the “r-word” – retarded.

Some of the speakers at the assembly included Best Buddies participants and Special Olympic athletes: Amanda Armstrong, Mary McClamroch, Matt Yacone, Michael Peterson and Andrew Peterson. Each speaker spoke of the strength and courage Best Buddies and the Special Olympics has given them.

Participant’s also spoke of the respect they have been lacking throughout their lives.

“We don’t ever want pity, rather we need your respect,” said Andrew Peterson, a Special Olympic Indiana athlete. “There is more to winning. We get the chance to improve, feel good about ourselves, show everyone that each person is not a Peterson nobody but a somebody.”

Michael Peterson, Andrew’s younger brother, and also a Special Olympics Indiana athlete and vocalist, sang a song from the hit television show Glee, “Get it Right.” The students gave

him a standing ovation.

Each speaker talked of their hope to one day eliminate the retarded from the English vocabulary. The best buddies spoke about their struggles with earning the respect of others.

Throughout the week, students signed a banner taking a pledge to “Spread the Word to End the Word.” Some of Guerin Catholic’s own students who are in the Learning Difference Program also spoke of their struggles with learning disabilities such as ADHD and dyslexia.

The students of Guerin Catholic High School pledged as a school to eliminate the “r-word” from their vocabulary. At the end of the assembly, students were given wrist bands to remind themselves of their commitment.

Has street maintenance taken a backseat to more glamorous projects?

By Robert Annis • rob@youarecurrent.com As Carmel has focused on building new infrastructure during the past several years, many of its existing streets – especially east of Keystone Avenue – have deteriorated.

Despite a current funding shortfall, city officials are optimistic the city can repave more streets than originally planned this year.

It takes more than $3 million to adequately address repaving in Carmel, but only $500,000 currently is budgeted for 2013. The city has $700,000 in repaving contracts from 2012 that were held up because of weather issues and will be completed this year.

Mayor Jim Brainard crafted an ordinance that would allow the City Council to appropriate $1.2 million from another road fund to devote to repaving. He hopes Luci Brainard Snyder will introduce it at an upcoming council meeting.

“We haven’t done as much (repaving) as we’d like to over the past few years,” Brainard said.

“But our roads are still in far better shape than most of the surrounding Snyder communities.”

This is especially true on the west side of Carmel, where the city spent about $2.5 million last year to repave streets, as mandated by the West Clay annexation agreement.

Before she sponsors the Sharp mayor’s ordinance, Snyder wants to sit down with Brainard and Council President Rick Sharp to discuss where the city can find additional money for repaving for the east side. Main Street and Hazel Dell Parkway are just two roads that are crumbling from traffic and need to be resurfaced, Snyder said.

been too focused on major projects like the proposed convention center and boutique hotel and has not devoted enough time and resources to basic infrastructure needs.

“Three straight years of resurfacing budgets have been raided to make cuts necessary for a balanced budget,” Sharp said. “The (Brainard) administration hasn’t shown a desire to cut spending (needed for repaving).”

As the city’s revenues decreased, Sharp accused Brainard of cutting the repaving budget instead of less-needed expenses, including consultants.

Sharp says the shortfall between the $3 million and $4 million needed for annual surfacing and the $1.7 million that may be available this year, assuming the council takes action, can be found elsewhere in the budget, including not buying flower baskets for the Arts & Design District and other areas of the city and reducing travel expenses and take-home cars for some employees.

“Everyone loves the Palladium, new roundabouts and activity in the Arts & Design District,” Snyder said. “When there are new and exciting things happening, people assume

everything else is going as planned. Not so.

Snyder said she will push for future budgets to have at least $3.5 million earmarked for repaving efforts, but in an e-mail Brainard refused to commit to future spending, stating, “$3 million is a good goal, but that will vary with what funds are available.”

The council wants the mayor to find money in the existing city budget but will not support using the Rainy Day Fund to close any funding gap, Snyder said.

Residents who responded to questions on social-media last week seemed to agree with the mayor that the roads are in fairly good shape … for the most part. But, they were also quick to point out certain roads, Main Street, chief among them, could use some TLC. But Sharp warned that continuing to defer maintenance would cost the city in the long run. Instead of milling an inch or two of the road surface and putting on a new coat of black top, street workers will have to grind into the base of the road, meaning longer and costlier repairs.

It’s not known exactly how many miles of repaving can be done this year. After Street Dept. head Dave Huffman determines a list of roads to be repaved, the projects will be put up for bid. Because of the recent brutal winter, asphalt prices may be higher than usual, possibly meaning fewer roads will be resurfaced.

Work on Palladium: Keep it in perspective

It is our position that overly restrictive homeowners associations can quickly become perversions of the freedoms they are meant to provide. HOA’s continue to be a powerful force in self-government. Unsatisfied with services provided by the local municipalities or desirous of even more selfconstraint, these groups have become ubiquitous in residential development in the U.S. While designed to maintain property values by requiring minimum standards of care, they are too often used to constrain even the most innocuous of individual liberties. Much attention has been given to those groups that have prevented the display of the American flag, claiming that flags, regardless of their nationality, are garish distractions from the bucolic nature of the subdivision.

This week ,it was reported that another zealous Florida HOA has voted to restrict children’s outdoor play. Bicycles and ball play are among the many forms specifically listed for prohibition. The HOA authorities claim the rules are intended to “keep the kids safe” and free from threat. Perhaps, but we are inclined to believe it is another example of small minds with unrestrained power.

While we defend the right of associations, we abhor retroactive moves on legitimate property rights.

What defines the best in human relationships?

Is it the setting and pursuing of shared goals? Is it in defining roles and specializing in optimal outcomes? Or, is it simply in being supportive – in carrying the burden when one’s partner cannot? Perhaps, depending on the relationship and the circumstance, they are all true to some degree. But aren’t the superlative relationships about bolstering, even challenging, the other person to be the very best that they can be?

As it relates to my colleagues and teammates, the best help me strengthen my weaknesses and fully use my best attributes. With my children, they push me to be a better parent with each new phase and difficult question, just as I urge them to become fully independent and functioning humans. With my spouse, the relationship continues to evolve, even as we mature further into adulthood.

Boundaries are established, challenged and redefined. And, it is good. While in each of

these associations, respect, support and even love, are required, isn’t a reasonable performance expectation also necessary?

While vacationing a few years ago, I was planted at my laptop with a phone to my ear.

My family was dressed and ready to head-out for a day of roller coasters. Feeling the pressure to depart, I exclaimed that I “had” to work longer. Calmly, my wife took me aside and reminded me that while I could work if I chose, it was not required. She was right. I like to work. I’d do it all the time if I could. But doesn’t my bargain with those around me require that I invest in them too? Wasn’t claiming that I had no choice simply giving me a pass to do what I wanted? It was time to stop working and go visit a giant mouse.

As The Palladium, the centerpiece of The Center for the Performing Arts, was rising out of the ground, construction crews encountered an issue with steel trusses in the highest reaches.

At that time, back in 2009, we cautioned readers to consider that “construction happens” – meaning, problems are encountered on every job somewhere along the road to completion.

That problem was solved.

Last week, it was brought to light that additional construction needs to take place in the same area this month, and it involves welding additional stiffeners and small plates. It’s called a retrofit. Those, too, happen. What the Carmel Redevelopment Commission is doing by having Sheil Sexton undertake this short-term project is prudent; it ensures the integrity of the structure will not be compromised. The $140,000 project is taking place so as to not cause an interruption to the performance schedule.

We’d like to caution again against wailing and gnashing of teeth over this latest development.

Post-construction improvements are made the world over and to several kinds of projects.

When complete, we anticipate the roof area will be pronounced “good as new.” And it will be.

Chambers support mass transit Editors, We respectfully disagree with Current’s From the Backshop on March 26, “Mass transit: ‘No’ to a tax increase,” and particularly take issue with the statement, “We get that mass transit could become an economic development engine … as long as it’s not on the taxpayers’ backs.”

First, no transit systems (including roads) operate at a profit. Our roads, bridges, pothole fixes and the fuel we put in our cars are not without taxpayer support. The investment in a transit system is an investment in economic development, quality of life and in ensuring our region remains a strong choice for business development and relocation.

Second, the bill under consideration will provide citizens with a choice – the opportunity to vote for public transit via referendum. Why would we oppose the public’s right to choose?

Finally, getting people to jobs is not “nonsense.” Not if you’re an employee trying to get or keep a job and have no transportation available. And not if you’re a company with open jobs and people anxious to fill them if they

could get to you.

Whether we like it or not, any demographic study you choose will indicate that two large groups of people – both the baby boomers and those now entering the job market – no longer prefer their lives to be dictated by an automobile. We have a choice, and choice is what this legislation is all about.

Now, it’s migraine madness Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ve experienced a few migraines in my day, but I don’t consider myself a perennial sufferer.

I’m hoping the headache I survived last weekend is not a sign of things to come. Here’s what happened.

My husband, Doo, and I were out shopping at Fry’s. If you’ve never been, think Walmart meets Best Buy with a dash of Menards. I needed a new camera, as I abandoned my last one in the bottom of a beach bag. During the course of its exile, the salt and sand conspired to cement the lens shut. Anyhoo, we’d located a replacement and were browsing through the laptop sector when I started having vision issues.

I thought it was due to all the flashing electronics but warned Doo, “If I go down, check for stroke.” We chuckled and continued on.

Part of me thought I was imagining the floaters and blind spots – after all, my last migraine was in 2004 − so I kept trying to focus on the carpet and Doo’s shoes. By the time we had paid and made our way to the car though, I was fairly certain I was in trouble.

Next up on our Saturday itinerary was Costco of all places, so I played the mind-overmatter card. You are fine. You will not develop a headache. We really needed toilet paper! But a mild pain began right in between my eyes as I

searched for a parking spot, and after reaching the frozen foods, a mere five minutes later, I was scouring the place for a restroom in case of an emergency heave.

Doo stared at me and said, “Do we need to go?” I nodded, and sprinted for the exit. We hadn’t put one thing in our cart, and that’s saying something at Costco. With Doo at the wheel and me practicing Lamaze in the reclined passenger seat, we raced for home. The pain was unbearable, and I couldn’t clamp down on the nausea. Doo got me the Fry’s bag moments before the dry heaving hit.

Once home, the real show started, along with short bursts of intense pain behind my left eye.

Lying down in my dark, quiet bedroom did little to alleviate the migraine, as I prayed for sweet Jesus to just let me pass out. Eventually I did doze off, and woke an hour or so later with no headache. That’s the strangest part about migraines for me, how quickly they come and go. I just hope this was a once-in-a-decade thing. We still need toilet paper! Peace out.

Heavy lifting Commentary by Dick Wolfsie When I was a kid, my uncle used to brag about his daily athletic regimen. “I start my exercise routine by lifting a five-pound potato sack over my head, then I go to a 10-pound potato sack. And finally a 25-pound potato sack. After that, I try putting a few potatoes in each bag.”

I thought of that joke the other day when I saw this article on the Internet: THE FOUR MOST OVERRATED EXERCISES Tire flip: Yes, this is a real exercise – perfect if you are prepping for this actual athletic competition or are thinking about pilfering a better set of wheels off a luxury car. All you need is a giant tire, like from a John Deere tractor. Then you just keep flipping the tire over and over until you crash through your garage door or the picket fence around your house. “Most folks shouldn’t attempt this,” concludes the writer.

I have a theory: if you fall into the “folks” category, you probably aren’t doing much heavy lifting, anyway.

Squats: There is a very complicated analysis about why this type of exercise can be detrimental. The writer explains why the chair squat, the barbell squat and the power squat can ruin your lower back. I was impressed with his exhaustive examination of the issue. In my career, I have read many experts’ opinions on every conceiv-

able topic, but this guy is the first one who knows squat.

The tricep kickback: I forgot where my triceps were, but apparently there are three of them, which confused me because the parts of my body that have any real value to me are either one-of-a-kinds or they come in matching pairs. I like the sound of kickback because I imagine an exercise where a good ole La-Z-Boy recliner plays an essential role.

The seated adduction: “Beware,” notes the writer, “it is dangerous to pull your arm into a shoulder extension and then sustain an isometric contraction in your latissimus dorsi and your posterior deltoid.” If this sounds familiar, it’s because the federal government is now requiring that this warning be on the box of every Twister game sold in toy stores. But there’s more concern by the author: “Having tight adductors will lead to weak glutes and a feeble butt, which will lead to sprained ankles and result in knee problems.” Republicans also think it will lead to higher taxes and fewer jobs, and Democrats think that with a condition like that, it’s harder to kick the can down the road.

Nick Veasey – Veasey worked in the advertising and design industries and pursued work in conventional still photography before making the serendipitous discovery of applying X-ray imaging to everyday objects and skeletons after being asked to X-ray a cola can for a television show. Veasey also X-rayed the shoes he was wearing on the day and upon showing the finished image to an art director, was galvanized by the response it provoked.

“We encourage people to bring kids. We want children to be exposed to art – it broadens the minds of our young people,” Lurie said.

Galleries involved include ArtSplash, Coats Wright Art & Design, Evan Lurie Gallery, Eye on Art Gallery, French Bleu Gallery, Magdalena Gallery of Art, Mary Johnston Studio, Soori Gallery and Trilridge Fine Art. “We’re here to help people understand art,” Lurie said. “It’s a nice cultural experience and a great date night – go out and be involved in things educational and engaging. Do something you don’t get to do every day or see every day.”

For the monthly walks, all galleries try to feature at least one artist at the event.

“We help encourage people to get educated in art and discover what you like,” he said. “Art is a reflection of our society and cultural identity… Embrace your own taste, identity. Art is a reflection of our own inner soul.”

‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ • R, 95 minutes Commentary by Chris Lloyd “Hyde Park on Hudson” exists in that nether realm floating somewhere between history, biography and legend. Its central characters are none other than Franklin D. Roosevelt, the King and Queen of England, and FDR’s contingent of relatives and retainers. But the film is not so much about the real people as our modern conception of them.

It’s now well known that Roosevelt, despite being trapped in a body crippled by polio, was a serial philanderer. Bill Murray, hardly anybody’s first thought for the actor who should embody FDR, nonetheless creates a distinct and compelling character that, if he is not reflective of the actual president, at least makes us want the real person to resemble his portrait.

The movie’s central problem is that it’s not really about FDR or the monarchs, but about Daisy, Roosevelt’s sixth cousin played by Laura Linney, who acts as the audience’s eyes and ears. A desperately lonely spinster, Daisy is thrilled by an unexpected invitation to join Roosevelt at the familial estate, where she and the president form a queer relationship that navigates somewhere beyond friendship but does not quite make landfall with romance.

The film is enjoyable in its parts, even if they don’t quite fit together satisfactorily.

Seasonal cooking at its best Get Cooking! by Claudia Pierson Living in the moment is wonderful, as is living in the season. Using what is reflective of the season and fresh from picking is always a treat, as are these recipes.

Roasted Beet and Orange Salad (serves 6) Ingredients: 2 bunches fresh beets (I like to use a mixture of red and golden), 10-12 ounces mixed spring greens, 3 fresh oranges (zest first), segmented removing as mush white as possible, 1 1/2 cups toasted pine nuts, 3 cups crumbled chevre Vinaigrette: 1/2 cup fresh orange juice, 1/2 cup white balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon garlic, 1 cup canola oil, Zest of oranges above Directions: Wash beets while on stem and then cut at base and end. Save washed leaves for plate décor. Cube into four to six bite-sized pieces. Toss in a bowl with 1 tablespoon olive oil and salt/pepper. Roast in oven at 400 degrees until fork tender, about 30 minutes. Toss greens, oranges and beets with vinaigrette and place on beet leaves. Top with chevre and pine nuts.

Bella Pasta (serves 6) Ingredients: 12-14 ounces fettuccine, 2 bunches fresh asparagus (see below), 2 cups diced oil packed sundried tomatoes (drained but NOT rinsed), 2 dozen medium cremini mushrooms- quartered, 1 cup fresh basil chopped, Olive oil, 2 tablespoons fresh garlic, 1 cup balsamic vinegar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 cups fresh shaved parmesan Directions: Boil water for pasta. Bend each asparagus stalk by holding each end and it will snap at tender part. Cut the remaining stalk into thirds and toss out ends. Heat sauté pan with olive oil and add garlic. Sauté asparagus and mushrooms for two to three minutes. Add ½ cup of balsamic and reduce. Add brown sugar and remaining balsamic and simmer until blended into sauce. Add sun-dried tomatoes and basil and blend well. Remove from heat. Drain cooked pasta, add asparagus trio and toss. Top with fresh parmesan. Serve immediately.

Is it a cold or an allergy?

Commentary by Chintan Amin Springtime generally signals the beginning of allergy season. During this time of year, people with nasal congestion often wonder whether their symptoms are caused by allergies or the common cold. Because the symptoms of allergies and colds are similar, it’s often difficult to tell which condition is the culprit – especially in early spring when seasonal allergies are just starting to flare up.

It’s important to understand the differences between colds and allergies. Colds can be caused by many different viruses, and the germs are contagious.

Cold sufferers may experience a variety of symptoms, including stuffy nose, sore throat and cough. In many cases, our immune system fights off a cold within several days, but this can be affected by other health conditions you may have.

Allergies are not caused by viruses. They are caused by an immune system response to an allergen, such as pollen or dust. The body responds to the allergen by releasing a chemical, histamine, which can cause a runny nose, cough, sneezing and swollen nasal passages.

Also, allergy sufferers commonly complain of itchy, watery eyes, which is generally not a cold Eat more berries – Berries can quell a sweet tooth, but they have other health benefits. There is a lot of water and fiber in various berries, which will satisfy a hungry person longer. – www.webmd.com Broccoli boon – If you’re looking to keep your teeth as white as possible, diet is a factor.

To tell whether your symptoms are related to a cold or allergies, consider these factors. Colds typically last from three to 14 days, while allergy symptoms can continue for days or months, depending on how long you are exposed to the allergen. While some allergies are seasonal, an allergic reaction causing nasal congestion or other symptoms can happen at any time of the year, as long as the allergen is present. On the other hand, many colds occur during winter. Also, with a cold, symptoms take a few days to develop after infection with the virus, but with allergies, symptoms can begin right after exposure to the allergen.

If you are uncertain whether you have a cold or allergies, and your symptoms persist for more than 14 days, schedule an appointment with your doctor (sooner, if symptoms worsen or you have other health conditions). There are many remedies for treating allergies, including nasal steroids to reduce swelling, and allergy shots.

Make your pool claim-ready Commentary by Jamie Ianigro Question from Susan Q. from Carmel: We’re starting to think warm thoughts, despite the never-ending winter, and that means opening up our pool in the next month or so. How do we make sure we have all of our bases covered when it comes to protecting ourselves? What are the big issues?

Response from Jamie Ianigro: The most important thing to remember as a pool owner is to make sure that your insurance agent knows you have a pool. Failure to notify your agent can result in denied claims and the liability risk falling completely on you. This is very important to remember if you add a pool to your existing property. Not having the pool on your policy can expose you to some serious unwanted risks.

Carriers have varying requirements and pricing schemes when it comes to pools. Independent insurance agencies have access to many carriers and will be able to find the best combination of price and coverages for your needs.

We recommend at least $1 million in liability coverage for all of our clients that have a homeowner’s policy. I would also advise adding an additional $1 million of coverage by adding an

umbrella liability policy to protect you and your family against catastrophic claims.

Having adequate insurance in place protects your assets if an incident occurs, but it does nothing to prevent something from happening.

Liability almost always falls on the pool owner and staying on top of your responsibility to keep your pool safe and secure is just as important as having the proper insurance in place. A safety pool cover protected by lock and key is probably the best place to start. A quality cover completely seals the pool and prevents accidental access to the water by unwanted visitors, children and pets. Making sure your pool is protected by a fence is also a good idea, but no fence is unconquerable.

It’s also important to remember that claims can happen no matter what you do to prevent them.

Not in my house Commentary by David Cain When I was still in college, my older sister took a new job at a super big company. She called me one night to tell me that she had a new job, and I was excited for her. I was even more excited when she told me several big boxes would be coming in the mail for me from her new company. A bit of that excitement faded when she told me the boxes would be empty.

She told me, however, when they arrived to fill them with all the products I used that were supplied by competitors of her new company.

She said her company would swap everything in the box with a product they sold. “Fill up the box with everything and send it back,” she said. I got the boxes, filled them to the rim with things that were mine and a few that weren’t and sent it back. New boxes arrived so fast the boxes must have crossed paths.

Immediately, my old stuff was new stuff. I was ecstatic. A college kid doesn’t ever get the old-for-new trade deal. The reason behind this act of kindness was brand protection. My sister is still there. She lives out of state, but when she visits my house, it always includes a review of what we have and the trashing of any competitor’s products that might have snuck their way into the household. While I’ve always been inclined to take a less aggressive approach with family and friends when promoting the services of my company, I’m reminded of this story and reconsider that passive path as it directly reflects on me and what I think our service is worth.

That or which?

Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: That was good stuff on the “that,” “who,” “whom” topic. How about a follow-up on the distinction between “that” and “which?”

(Patti Hauck) Answer: Thanks for writing in, Patti. Happy to oblige.

Much like the rule for choosing between “that” and “who/whom,” the “that/which” rule can be a simple one to master, once you get the hang of it.

As a pronoun, “that” is used to introduce restrictive clauses. These are clauses which are essential to the meaning of the sentence. For example: “The car that hasn’t moved in a month finally got towed.” Without “that” and its restrictive clause, we wouldn’t know which car got towed.

“Which,” as you may have guessed, is used to begin non-restrictive or parenthetical clauses.

These are clauses which can be removed from the Social media faux pas – The rules of how to act on social media are changing all the time. Jessica French, social media coordinator at PLA Media, recommends not syncing music streaming program Spotify with your Facebook account. If you do, everyone will know you’re a Justin Bieber fan, or worse. – www.living.msn.com

sentence without dramatically altering its meaning. For example: “My guitar, which is acoustic, is my favorite possession.” If we removed “which is acoustic” from the sentence, it would still convey the same message: I like my guitar.

Just to illustrate the distinction between “that” and “which, let’s look at the sentence another way. If I had said, “My guitar that is acoustic is my favorite possession,” there is the implication that I have other guitars which aren’t acoustic.

So there we go: “That” and “which” in a nutshell. If the clause is necessary to the sentence, we’re going with “that.” If not, “which” is our pronoun.

Please heed these warnings Commentary by Vicky Earley If you are not in the mood for nagging, move on to the next page. Yep, I am about to go into a mom, wife, OSHA inspectortype tirade.

Please, please, please heed those tired, worn out warnings about safety in the home.

You have heard it a million times; make sure rugs are secure, make sure you have safety cords on your blinds, make sure your tile is not slippery, and make sure there is a place other than the floor for size 10 men’s athletic shoes.

Consider all those admonitions that you have heard throughout time as a premonition rather than just a warning.

Yes, I am typing these musings on how to decorate a beautiful home with just one hand.

Yes, I (literally) fell victim to a focus on aesthetics and overlooked clutter. Yes, I fell victim to the tackle of a pile of running shoes and decorated my own floor with my entire being, I think I had a momentary experience of an existential floating when it first happened. I wasn’t unconscious, but my mental inventory of body parts was proceeding well, at least until I got to my wrist which was shaped in a way I never knew possible.

The owner of the menacing footgear, my husband, Mike, dutifully drove me to St.Vincent Carmel where I was greeted by a group of professionals ready to repair the result of my worst decorating mistake ever – a safety hazard.

A broken wrist, surgery, anesthesia and a mobility reducing cast are not worth the time it would have taken to put those formidable foes called shoes in a safe place.

The same holds true for loose rugs, exposed wires, cluttered stairs, and as I learned from by new BFFs that spent their Saturday night tending to me, the biggest culprit of all, abandoned dog toys.

So, consider this the opportunity to avoid a Saturday night date with the gang at St.V’s and take the issue of safety seriously.

And to those who were by my side during my “decorating disaster,” Dr. Mindrebo, Dr. Priddy, Jennifer, Megan, Kari, Phil and Terry, thank you. And thank you to the nameless medical company rep who used his Saturday evening to deliver the part needed for the surgery.

Commentary by David Decker Does your master bedroom need a bit of makeover? Here’s the good news; a beautiful master bedroom doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. All you need is a bit of spare time and a few simple decorative elements to completely reinvent the look of the room. Here are five quick and easy ways to update your master bedroom without breaking the bank.

Lighting: Lighting is an essential decorative element, especially in the home. Proper lighting makes color more vibrant, while drastically affecting the energy of the room. Decide on the type of atmosphere you’d like to create in your master bedroom and formulate how the lighting can help you achieve this look. Softer lighting will create a more elegant feel while bright lighting will make the room cheerful and inviting. You could even install a dimmer switch to adjust the lighting depending on your activity or mood.

Lighting Fixtures: And of course, lighting fixtures are an important decorative element. Replace your old table or floor lamps with new ones that feature a different style. Install a few sconces along the walls. You could also consider swapping your old ceiling fixture with a chandelier.

New Hardware: You don’t need to order an entirely new bedroom suite to create a new style. Try swapping out your existing hardware and drawer pulls for new ones. You’ll be amazed at the difference new hardware can make.

Add a Mirror: Mirrors can instantly add polish and drama while creating the illusion of space. The reflective surface will also brighten the room. This person is responsible for intervention and prevention services for primary and secondary child victims of violent crime, including domestic violence and sexual assault.

Duties: Responsible for the development and implementation of the children’s domestic violence program including two evening support groups. Responsible for maintaining and updating group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc. as needed. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Responsible for working in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Responsible for being a handler for the agency’s facility service dog, which includes learning commands, completing continuing education, and incorporating into group and individual services with clients.

Responsible for providing advocacy services to clients at the Child Advocacy Centers, which may include, but are not limited to, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, and inter/intra-agency networking.

Responsible to serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Responsible for completing 24-hour on-call Crisis Line shifts as scheduled and approved by the Director of Client Services.

Responsible for collaborating with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community, as needed.

Responsible to represent the agency in public and private presentations to increase awareness and educate audiences as to victim-related issues as requested by the Youth Services Coordinator.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field is required. Minimum of 2 years experience working with children and/or in a victim assistance field.
