It is 9 a.m. on a Monday morning. Most Carmel residents are wearily returning to the daily grind, drinking their coffee and longing for the weekend. Anne Varnau, however, is ecstatic.

She struts into the dimly lit, carpeted gymnasium at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, humming to herself joyfully as she prepares to teach her aerobics class. Her students, ranging in age from 50 to about 90, fall into place, ready to soak in some of her vivacious spirit.

For 35 years, Varnau, 71 (you read that correctly), has been teaching aerobics. She has seen the sport go through a variety of changes, morphing from a casual spin-off of dance to a serious form of exercise. Among the first instructors to teach aerobics in the Indianapolis area, Varnau’s background in dance prepared her for her long, successful career.

“Aerobics is just a great way to stay in shape, and I love it,” she said. “And if you’re making money doing something you love, you can’t beat that.”

Her love for aerobics and a consistent exercise regimen has kept her in peak physical shape, and it also contributes to her everpositive temperament. Her students marvel at her ability to stay happy, even on those dreary early spring Monday mornings when everyone else wishes they were still asleep.

“I have never seen Anne have a bad day,” said Elizabeth Chamberlin, a student of Varnau’s for almost four years.

“She is always extremely fun to be around. It’s her personality that keeps us coming back.”

Unlike most aerobics instructors, Varnau employs an engaging teaching style that keeps her students both physically fit and entertained. She occasionally stops to tell a humorous story or joke, keeping the class feeling like

a cohesive group.

Today, as Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” echoes through the gym, Varnau shouts its refrain. The phrase is fitting given the familial nature of the group, which meets each month at a local restaurant to celebrate one another’s birthdays. “This would be a good song for you girls who are going to try out for Dancing With the Stars,” she says.

In some ways, Varnau’s class is more than a class – it’s a support group. Her students, some of whom have been with her for more than 20 years, freely trade stories, suggestions, recipes ... seemingly anything with one another.

They have been through divorce, illness, injury and dis-

senior citizens who couldn’t afford to pay.

Her career in aerobics and consistent exercise has actually reversed the aging process, possibly taking more than 20 years off her metabolic age, Dr. Eve Olsen, owner of the Olsen Center for Wellness, said. “If we could bottle exercise, we would have a miracle drug,” she said. “It improves every system in your body. It never ceases to amaze me.”

For Varnau, aerobics is more than just exercise. It incorporates elements of dance – her first interest – and allows her to express creativity through music. She doesn’t care for the bass-heavy songs that dominate most aerobics classes, opting instead for an older, more diverse selection. She even varies the music according to season, using, for instance, football fight songs in the fall and Christmas music during the winter.

Varnau’s penchant for physical fitness also has rubbed off on her family, including her husband, Mark, and all six of her children.

Mark, a retired pharmacist and “professional volunteer,” comes to class at least once a week, dancing and joking along with the rest of the group. Their daughter, Mimi Brookie is an aerobics instructor in Carmel, as is their daughter-in-law, Laura Varnau.

Varnau Though most of her students have suffered from major hip, shoulder, knee or other injuries, Varnau has remained healthy, perhaps because of her lifelong commitment to exercise. She plans to keep teaching for as long as possible, and though she maintains that she doesn’t teach at the level she once did, her students are always impressed with her ability.

They, too, seem to agree that they will continue to attend class as long as Varnau is teaching. Even those that normally don’t like exercise can’t help but love it.

Let Barbara Clifton, a student of Varnau’s for more than 15 years, summarize: “It’s the best part of my day. You just feel good afterward.

“You have to find what you like a little bit. A lot of people don’t like exercise at all, but you can find something that you sort of like.”

“We have every religion,” Varnau said. “We have new hips, new shoulders and new knees. We touch on every subject. We solve the world’s problems. And we exercise.”

Doctors long have touted the importance of exercise in staying healthy and happy, and Varnau and her class are living proof. In her roughly 35 years as an instructor, she has taught at the Jordan YMCA, Community Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital and Orchard Park. EASEMENTS: DOWN THE PIPE? It is our position that there is shared blame as landowners and pipeline easement owners continue to clash.

Crisscrossing much of our fine city (and much of the state, for that matter) are scores of these hidden bits of infrastructure. They deliver everything from natural gas to refined gasoline. Certainly, they lower costs and increase efficiencies, both good things. But as pipeline ownership has consolidated over the last many decades, along came very different interpretations about the definition of easement.

In some cases these disputes are resolved amicably and in good faith, but in other cases there is enormous discord followed by significant legal bills.

To be sure, easement holders should be more empathetic as they march across homeowners’ properties, demanding that trees and improvements be cleared – often in a desire to take advantage of more cost-effective aerial inspections of pipelines rather than the on-foot variety favored for many decades. Too, land purchasers must become more aware of the rights of easement holders. Real estate agents must be more direct and forthcoming with homeowners and perspective buyers about the impact that these easements can have on their properties.

Finally, developers need to create a more adequate buffer between the easements and the lots that they are selling.

READER’S VIEWS A HELPING COMMUNITY Editor: On Saturday afternoon (March 22), I was driving on 31 north of 146th Street during an afternoon of shopping.

Suddenly I saw a tiny gray poodle, wearing a tiny jacket, dashing frantically across four lanes of traffic. Cars slammed on brakes or swerved left and right, narrowly missing the terrified dog. I pulled into the closest parking lot (Chili’s) and jumped out of my car and ran out to attempt to grab the dog before he was hit or caused an accident.

Several other people parked and joined the chase, but the dog was much quicker than any of us: a dozen or more people chasing a five-pound poodle. Finally after running some distance the dog ran under a van, and we were all on the ground, surrounding the van to corral him and cut off all exit routes. Only then was I able to grab him. The frantic escapee was finally captured, and I returned him to his equally frantic and grateful owner.

Having recently relocated to Carmel, I was extremely impressed with the willingness of so many people to drop what they were doing and join in the chase.

Without the help of all the rescuers who saw the situation and jumped in to help, this story almost certainly would not have had a happy ending. The drivers who were stopped in traffic patiently waited while both dog and rescuers were running between cars. I had jumped out of my car so quickly that the door was left open, my keys and purse on the seat. I found out when I finally got back to my vehicle that a kind couple had sat in their car, watching mine, to be sure it was safe until I returned.

The Carmel/Westfield area is a great place to be, and special thanks to the caring, helpful residents who demonstrate genuine interest and willingness to help.

Was I way off the mark with my description of the events? Not really, even though I did exaggerate some (the Bunko party was won for $1,200, not $1,300).

In fact, several of my neighbors who were also present said I nailed it. But was everyone at the function “over-served?” No, of course not. Were a lot of people drinking?

Yes, especially as the night wore on. But that’s OK­— it was an adults-only party off school grounds, and in the end it raised a ton of money for our school. Almost $27,000 to be exact. Did the PTO and other parent volunteers do a tremendous

job of organizing and planning? Yes! Am I grateful to live in a community where families are generous and care about education? Hell, yes.

Did I mention any of this in my article?

No, because my column wasn’t about fundraisers. It was about the funny things people do when they’re drinking.

So, to all the Smoky Row parents who now hate my guts, I encourage you to reread the article. If you focus on what I’ve actually written and take it all in with a grain of salt, I think you’ll find it a lighthearted commentary on what was an extremely fun evening.

RANdom acts of kindness add up

M

y column last week was a plea for help to assist a young family with three children stricken with Muscular Dystrophy. Yes, three children living under the same roof, with muscles that do not respond to messages sent by their brain. The physical therapy assistant treating the children in the Carmel School System wrote me on their behalf. The school was loaning five-year-old Dakota a walker to use at school, but he desperately needed Jeff one for use while at home. That led to the Worrell creation of Dakota’s Walker Fund and then to an entire community that stepped up to help.

Before my column actually appeared in print, Rich Taylor, a local Carmel Rotarian and First Merchant banker whom agreed to collect and safeguard the money for Dakota, Chloe and James, rose to his feet during the weekly Friday Rotary meeting. He simply wanted to let all Rotarians know of a need in our community and

that he would be graciously accepting $20 donations to help purchase for the three kids, necessary equipment to improve their lives. As I said, Dakota needs a walker. But Chloe yearns for an assisted standing device that would get her out of her wheelchair for a few hours each day.

Mom and Grandma are the caregivers and a shower lift to help get all three growing kids in and out of the bathtub would be a big help as well.

From just one voice the second act of kindness towards the family began to take shape. Taylor no more than sat down, when Sue Maki, a Rotary board member jumped to her feet, faced the crowd and said, “Lets pass the hat and give it all to the family.”

Pass the hat they did and it overflowed with singles, 10’s and 20’s. It took the rest of the meeting to count the green and Taylor left the luncheon with a solid foundation to launch Dakota’s Walker Fund.

I am told a huge public ribbon cutting and celebration is coming soon. RELATIONSHIP BUILDING - The Cinderella Ball, a father-daughter event for young girls between the ages of 5 and 10 years, will make its Carmel debut at the Ritz Charles on Friday, May 16. The three-hour event consists of a sit-down dinner, horse-drawn carriage ride, ballroom dance lesson, craft, entertainment, souvenir photo, and commemorative T-shirt. Cinderella and Prince Charming will also be on hand to interact with their royal guests.

The event is designed to help foster family relationships between fathers and their daughters. Carmel princesses are encouraged to bring a donation for the Hamilton County Family Access Center at the May 16 event. Tickets for The Cinderella Ball are $50 per person.

ow! I had no idea that my column from March 25 would spark so much controversy. After attending the PTO fundraiser, I thought the event would make an extremely funny jumping off point for an article about how silly people are when they drink.

That’s it. I didn’t set out to judge parents, slam volunteers, or hurt anyone’s feelings (hence the reason I didn’t name names, compleDanielle mented several Wilson women, and poked the most fun at my husband.) Honestly, it never even occurred to me that people would be offended (except for the lady in the gold dress, and to you, ma’am, I do apologize.)

But over the last two weeks I’ve been called mean-spirited, petty, dim-witted, a drunk, a soon-to-be divorcee, and of course, a bad mother. I’ve also been assured that my article will negatively affect attendance for next year’s fundraiser and

an instinctual gift? Most people are funnier than they think and, likewise, most are more creative then they give themselves credit for. Some will be more instinctually gifted than others, but everyone has to put forth the effort to be creative, innovative, or even funny. For most of us, it doesn’t just happen.

Marketing also requires innovation and creativity. It demands new thinking to make connections with consumers of your product or service. Can you learn to be creative, innovative, and inventive? You certainly can develop these skills just like you can train yourself to think more about connections with your audience and practice it. If you don’t believe you are creative, you might consider redefining creativity. And once you start to think of yourself as skillfully creative, apply that creativity to discover new ways to connect with people. It will undoubtedly blossom new ideas and dawn a new way of thinking.

Drop the deep-fried food now! Almost every food, whether it’s steak, chocolate or red wine, has some nutrients to contribute. But one thing is absolute: fried foods are garbage, bereft of any true value.

Never, ever skip breakfast. If you want to maximize your fitness results or fat-loss efforts, you must eat breakfast. Even if you don’t exercise at all – breakfast remains the most important meal of the day. Oatmeal works wonders.

Eat fat to lose fat. Healthy fats are necessary to your body for a bunch of reasons: regulating hormonal production, improving immune function, lowering total cholesterol, lubricating joints, and providing the basics for healthy hair, nails and skin. The singular distinction you must be aware of is the difference between healthy “good� fats, and dangerous “bad� fats. For example, a good fat is olive oil, and a bad fat is mayonnaise.

Eat regularly throughout the day. Fasting or overly restrictive diets will enable you to lose weight – in the short run. Because the weight you lose is primarily water weight and lean-muscle mass. With exercise and six small, wellbalanced meals (one protein, one good carbohydrate and a fruit or vegetable), your metabolism will soar and the pounds will fall.

Converting or maintaining information in a digital format has many advantages - just think about how digital photography has changed the way we store and share photos.

In the early days of the personal computer, it was thought Gary Hubbard computers would Technology reduce the amount of printed paper, but the opposite has proven to be true.

According to Xerox, from 1995 to 2005, the amount of printed documents doubled.

There is also a psychological barrier to overcome, because most of us just plain prefer printed pages over electronic ones.

Paper is entrenched in the way most of us currently function, so start by making sure your desire to go electronic is not going to actually reduce productivity in

your business cycles.

Another mistake associated with “the paperless office” is that it will create organization where none exists. The reality is that technology is never a substitute for organization. In order to adopt any of the paperless processes, you must have a very clear organizational structure in place to develop the plan.

Filing items in the real world is a physical activity that everyone is familiar with; however, filing documents in the virtual world has little continuity between most users, so you will need to set clear standards and guidelines.

Some of the more benign paperless office processes you can adopt (or may have already) include using a scanner in place of copiers, which also allows you to electronically transmit the document instead of a traditional fax.

Another side benefit of keeping large documents in digital form is that it’s much easier to make changes and redistribute the information.

GARDEN & YARD WATCH PLANTS: THESE GROW IN THE SHADE - If you have an area on your property with dry shade and wish to grow plants there, you may quickly come to designate such an area as problematic. Indeed, areas with dry shade pose a dual challenge, since they are lacking in two elements that many plants need in abundant quantities: water and sunlight.

Here are four plants that can tolerate a lack of water and sunlight.

Hosta plants present a choice that is quite distinct from the other choices of plants for dry shade in this list. They have greater mass than the rest, standing a foot high or taller, with a slightly greater spread.

Hosta plants form a leafy garden dense enough to choke out weeds. If planted in rows, they are impressive enough to serve as borders.

Liriope spicata - This also has a feature that distinguishes it from the other plants. For liriope looks like a grass (its common name is “border grass”, or “lilyturf”), even though it’s actually a member of the lily family. But liriope also has a spikey flower, ranging in color from white to lavender. In autumn it bears a dark berry.

While “Stella de Oro” truly is a “daylily,” in the sense that its individual flowers last only a day, don’t be fooled into thinking

that you won’t get much of a show out of this perennial. Another bloom will be along shortly to replace yesterday’s departed beauty. In fact, its ability to re-bloom over a long period makes Stella de Oro daylily perhaps the most popular of the daylilies.

Its popularity is also due to its ability to adapt to a wide range of planting zones and conditions, including dry shade.

Foxglove is distinguished by its showy floral display. It is also the tallest of the plants for dry shade discussed here. But don’t grow foxglove around small children: it’s quite poisonous!

Frequently tighten the blade and engine mounting bolts, as well as any other nuts, bolts and screws. Check mower wheels, bearings and axles for wear and lubrication. At the Harrison Center for the Arts (1505 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis), Willy displays her talents as part of a group show of landscape painters.

WILLY “The exhibit at CCA Gallery showcases the diversity of my illustrations,” said Willy, well-known locally among devotees of “Have You Ever Seen a Moose Taking a Bath?” and “Have You Ever Seen a Moose Brushing His Teeth?”, both written by Jamie McClaine and illustrated by Willy. “The challenge in children’s book illustrations is to communicate the story independently while working with the author’s text. My job is to bring the book to life through the visuals.”

Willy is also showing images from “Why Is Mommy Sleeping?” by Yopi Havlik, a breast cancer survivor. The book helps parents discuss difficult, sometimes life-threatening health issues with young children. Original works of art from the soon-to-be-released “Three Cups,” by Mark St. Germain, will also be on view, along with illustrations from a work in progress, “Full Moon Maxi,” by Carrie Yakola, which explores the phases of the moon.

CCA Gallery is selling signed copies of the Moose books for $20 each, along with plush moose ($10) and giclee prints from the books ($20-$200).

Although original drawings and paintings from the books are not for sale, books in print are available, and visitors can pre-order “Three Cups” ($10). In addition, Willy shows the process of

creating “Full Moon Maxi,” which is not yet scheduled for publication, from initial sketches through to some of the finished illustrations.

Willy is also selling artwork from a series of notecards created for the Heartland Film Festival. The cards cost $12 each, with half of the proceeds going to support the festival, and $160 for framed prints.

After a complete interior redesign, the restaurant’s name has been shortened to “S.I.” on its logo, which, according to the Web site, can also stand for “sexy” and “intimate.” With 12 specialty cocktails, light-up community tables and entrees ranging from seared duck breast to filet mignon, Scholar’s Inn commits to being eclectic, artistic and unpretentious. Tachiris said it has a Las Vegas or Los Angeles atmosphere in the contemporary lounge and a more traditional, private fine dining atmosphere in the dining room. Also, its Mass Ave location offers a variety of choices for an evening out.
