Parents unite against high-ability program changes

As Carmel Clay Schools moves ahead with its plan to transform its services for highability EDUCATION students, many parents are coming together to create an organized voice of opposition to the changes.

CCS announced in a letter sent to parents March 13 McMichael that it would stop separating high-ability elementary school students into their own classrooms and instead use a Total School Cluster Grouping model, a system that combines high-ability and general education students.

Since then, many parents have been contacting district administrators and school board members to express their concerns.

More than a dozen of them spoke against the change at the March 26 school board meeting, and they’ve launched two Facebook groups and an online petition.

“Our goal is to connect as many concerned parents as possible so we have a forum to share our experiences or information as we are all individually taking steps to become educated and meet with administrators and make progress,” said Jennifer Zivoin, the

mother of a high-ability student at Forest Dale Elementary who launched the petition.

After receiving a great deal of feedback from parents, CCS scheduled community meetings to be led by principals at each elementary school to provide more information about TSCG, answer questions and gather feedback. After the March 26 school board meeting, Associate Supt. for Business Affairs Roger McMichael, who is also serving as Dudley co-interim superintendent, said he met with elementary principals March 23 to discuss the change and that all 11 of them supported it.

“I believe if 80 percent of our teachers and administrators, principals namely, feel this is a good program, this goes a long way with me,” McMichael said.

During the school board meeting, Christopher Riegel, who has a daughter in the high-ability program, echoed many parents in saying that he would have liked to have seen more input from the public before deciding to implement the TSCG model.

“If this is such a great idea, then the administration should have no problem convincing the public and the school board of its value,” he said. “The fact that they are trying to sneak it through with no debate or evidence

presented to the public strongly suggests this is not the case.”

Jennifer Alcantara, who has three children who have been involved in the program, said she doesn’t believe the decision was based on the best interest of students.

“One goal stated by Carmel Clay Schools is to close the achievement gap with hopes the TCSG model will increase the overall achievement of the entire school,” she said. “This raises suspicion that CCS is chasing higher test scores.”

Other parents suggested CCS wait to make a major change until after district leadership – which is currently operating with two interim superintendents – is more stable.

Current sent questions for and requested an interview with Co-Interim Supt. and Assistant Supt. of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Amy Dudley, whose office is overseeing the changes. CCS officials have not responded to most of the questions or granted an interview.

CCS non-fraternization policy approved

Carmel Clay Schools unanimously adopted a new policy March 26 that outlines boundaries for employees in “personal EDUCATION relationships,” which include those of a romantic or intimate nature.

The board adopted the policy approximately two months after former Supt. Nicholas Wahl and Human Resources Director Corinne Middleton resigned. The two had been put on leave in October 2017 as the school board conducted a review of district leadership, which included examining the relationship between

the two administrators.

School board member Pam Knowles, a member of the policy committee, read a statement at the meeting that outlined the need for the new guidelines.

“Included in the leadership review conducted earlier this year was also a review of policies that could impact leadership in the district,” she said. “At that time, attention was focused nationwide to the relationships between employees and how the workplace should react to those. All of this led to the consideration of the (non-fraternization) policy.”

The policy states that individuals in close, personal relationships may not work in posi-

tions with a “direct, indirect or perceived reporting relationship” between the two or where one could influence the other’s terms or conditions of employment.

It states that each employee is responsible for promptly reporting any existing or potential close personal relationship that may violate the policy to the director of human resources. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination, it states.

The district’s previous guidelines didn’t prohibit such a relationship, although it stated that if a married or cohabiting employee directly reports to his or her significant other, one will be transferred.

What it means: After receiving community feedback, the calendar committee proposed future calendars that include keeping the Wednesday before Thanksgiving a vacation day, finishing the first semester before winter break and maintaining a traditional rather than balanced calendar. They do not include a full week for fall break.

What’s next: The school board is expected to vote on the calendars in April.

What happened: The Carmel Education Foundation recognized the recipients of approximately $13,000 in spring grants.

What it means: The grants will be used for programs and classroom items that directly benefit students. CEF has donated more than $2 million in college scholarships and $525,00 in classroom grants since 1966.

What happened: The school board awarded $4.6 million in bids for upgrades at three CCS sites.

What it means: Upgrades include roofing at Forest Dale Elementary, new carpet and paint at Carmel High School and paving at the Educational Services Center and CHS football stadium, among other projects. The projects are funded through 2018 general obligation bonds.

Sheriff candidates detail aspirations at chamber event

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Area residents heard from Hamilton County Sheriff candidates at the March 13 Westfield Chamber of ComPOLITICS merce Coffee with the Chamber event.

Candidates Bill Clifford, Dennis Quakenbush, Eddie Moore and Mitch Russell answered questions from chamber President Jack Russell about the sherrif’s race.

Questions covered what the candidates thought their greatest career accomplishments were, why the race was important to the people in Hamilton County and their vision for the department.

Russell, who serves as security manager for Riverview Health, comes from a law enforcement background of 41 years.

“I have been very lucky to have many opportunities in management, budgeting, hiring and terminations and have been very successful at that,” he said. “That’s the greatest assets I can give to this county.”

Clifford said the reason the race is important is because voters elect the one to oversee the safety of the community.

“You have loved ones at home. The sheriff is the constitutional law enforcement of-

ficer that you all elect. You choose who is going to be the top cop in your community,” said Clifford, a HCSO sergeant. “I spent more than a year talking to citizens in their homes, in businesses and in clubs. We need

to be connected to you, and I hope you can see I’m willing to do that.”

Quakenbush, captain of the patrol division for the HCSO, said the race is important to residents because they don’t want more

crime in the county.

“This is consistently one of the greatest places to live in the nation, I’m proud of everything we’ve done and put in place,” Quakenbush said. “We attract great businesses to this community, and we don’t want crime to creep up from Marion County.

We want someone who is passionate and tough on crime.”

Quakenbush also said the jail project was important because Hamilton County inmates are less likely to re-offend upon release than the national average.

Moore said he is proud of founding the Hamilton County Chaplaincy program. He is a commander of one of the HCSO’s night shift patrol divisions.

“My service to the community through Christ has been very, very important and led me to even deeper service to the community,” Moore said. “This is where we chose to live. I chose to live here because the people of Hamilton County are wonderful people, and being a police officer here has been just a fantastic ride.”

The candidates will participate in a forum hosted by the Fiscal Conservatives of Hamilton County at 7 p.m. April 17 at Ivy Tech, 300 N. 17th St., Noblesville.

Solar project breaks ground

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County dignitaries broke ground March 12 on the $8 million solar project that will feature 9,300 solar panCOUNTY els on building roofs at the Hamilton County Correctional Campus in Noblesville and on 3 acres on the east side of Ind. 37 near the Correctional Campus.

The project is expected to save Hamilton County approximately $25 million in utility expenses in the next 25 years. Currently, utilities are the county’s second-highest expense after employee salaries and benefits, according to Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman.

The county pays $1.6 million annually in utility bills for county facilities. The solar project will provide enough energy to power 38 percent of the jail complex and 100 percent of the health services building.

“This project isn’t about the right now, it’s about our future,” Steve Wood, supt. of Hamilton County buildings and grounds, stated in a press release. “This project will produce enough clean power to avoid greenhouse emissions equivalent to 10 mil-

Johnson-Melloh Solutions, the project contractor, will provide live web monitoring of the energy being saved by the solar project. The county can share the information with local schools to teach students about energy consumption.

The project should be complete by late June. The county will make annual payments of $623,000 over 20 years at a 3 percent interest rate. County officials said utility savings generated from the project will pay the capital cost of the project in less than 12 years.

Carmel Youth Assistance Program to hold second gala

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com Dr. Bob Youkilis, board chair for the Carmel Youth Assistance Program, believes many issues in society can be FUNDRAISER addressed by reaching out to youth.

That’s why CYAP is so effective, he said.

It’s a preventative program that connects at-risk youth to mentoring and other programs before serious issues occur. It’s proactive instead of reactive. “We find the earlier we get to children who are having problems, the greater chance we have to change their lives,� he said.

CYAP has come a long way in its almost three years of existence. Previously, CYAP focused on directing youth and their families to resources to help address issues such as slipping grades, financial hardship or behavioral issues. Now, CYAP has developed its own programs — including a summer free lunch program and mentorship

opportunities —to address gaps in services that exist in Carmel.

Youkilis said the idea grew out of a program in Westfield. In that city, officials noticed a substantial drop in students in the juvenile corrections systems after the youth assistance program was started, which is not only better for the youth but also saves taxpayer money.

Last year, CYAP held its inaugural gala event at Ritz Charles. The second annual fundraiser will be held there April 28. The band The Bishops is returning. Tickets are $125 per person.

Monon Greenway upgrade in south Carmel to begin soon

Work will soon begin to improve the Monon Greenway between 96th Street and Gradle Drive.

TRAIL The Carmel Clay Board of Parks and Recreation approved nearly $250,000 for JKES Inc. to complete the project, which could begin as early as the end of this week. It is expected to wrap up by the end of the month, weather permitting.

The upgrades include installing new bollards, placing a 1-inch asphalt overlay and adding gravel on the sides of the trail to eliminate the drop off. Some sections, such as where tree roots have pushed up on the trail, will be replaced.

CCPR Director Mark Westermeier said at the March 13 parks board meeting that the trail is approximately 16 years old, and he expects the improvements will last another 16 years or so. At that point, a more extensive project that involves milling the trail will likely be

needed to keep it in top condition.

“This is the first time this much work has been done on any section of the Monon since it was constructed from Indianapolis to Westfield,” Westermeier said. “We are probably going to learn some things about it that we maybe don’t want to learn, which is normal the first time.”

CCPR is preparing detour routes to use when portions of the trail are shut down. Updates on the closures and detours will be available at carmelclayparks.com.

“The Monon Greenway Refurbishing Project will be as minimally invasive to the public as you can get with a trail refurbish project,” said Lindsay Labas, CCPR marketing director.

Historical society exhibit documents impact of Great War

The Carmel Clay Historical Society will host a new exhibit April 14 to May 13 called “The Great War: From Ration HISTORY Lines to the Front Lines.”

“We have borrowed a traveling exhibit from the Indiana Historical Society that is called ‘The Great War,’” said Emily Ehrgott, CCHS executive director. “It will showcase the way the war affected not only the people serving in the war but the people here in Indiana at the time.”

Artifacts will be on display that have a local tie.

“We’ll also be highlighting a few items that we have from our collection, such as a Word War I uniform that was worn by a Carmel resident who went to war,” Ehrgott said. “We also have a spent shell casing that was made into a lamp. A lot of times they took war trash and re-purposed it. We do that a lot now, but back then that was pretty forward thinking. The lampshade was hand-painted by Franklin Booth, who was a Carmel resident.”

There also will be artwork of the era on display.

The exhibit will include information on the impact the demand for steel had on cities in Indiana and how rationing affected residents.

“We’re also having Jim Corridan from the Indiana Archives Records Administration do a lecture on April 12 at the library, and he’s going to expound on how the war affected us in Indiana versus the world and the country,” Ehrgott said.

Library to host author fair

By Maria Cook • news@currentincarmel.com Local authors will showcase their work and sell books at the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Local Author Fair, set BOOKS for 1 to 4 p.m. April 14 in the program room. More than 30 authors from Carmel and surrounding areas will participate.

A variety of authors will attend, including those who write nonfiction, children’s literature, young adult, short stories, romance, science fiction and other genres, according to CCPL Communications Manager Beth Jenneman.

“The fair offers local and self-published authors a chance to get exposure in the community, and (it offers) readers a chance to explore books that can’t typically be found at a regular bookstore,” Jenneman said. “It’s a unique opportunity to discover something new and different.”

There is no entry fee for the fair. The public can visit authors’ tables, chat with them

Dr. Arthur Freeman, 93, died March 7 at his home in Indianapolis. After serving with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, Freeman received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Ohio State University. The former Carmel resident was employed for 30 years at the American Veterinary Medical Association in Chicago, retiring as executive vice president.

He was preceded in death by his wife Freeman of 27 years, Marilyn Werner Freeman, and his two brothers, Harold Freeman and Arnold Freeman.

He is survived by his son, Joel (Sharon Smaller) and daughter, Mary Lucas (Steve Hanke); four grandchildren, Daisha and Stratton Lucas, Julia and Audrey Freeman; and his dear friend, Maxiene Rogers. To honor his requests, there will be no local services. Interment will be private.

Illustration a dream come true

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Laura Grande Adams’ passion for art got a boost from a notable Indianapolis philanthropist.

BOOKS “My (maternal) grandmother, Marilyn Glick, was always very encouraging of my art pursuits,” Adams said. “I would draw when we always went to their house for dinner on Friday nights.

She said I had illustrator (ability) in me, so it was always in the back of my mind as a dream.”

Glick, who died in 2012, was a huge patron of the arts along with her late husband, Eugene Glick.

Adams, who grew up in Carmel, taught art for a year at Creekside Middle School after graduating from the University of Dayton.

When Adams, a Brebeuf Jesuit graduate, worked as an elementary art teacher in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe, Mich., a student’s mother, Gail Kachadourian Howe, was writing a children’s book. She told her son, Jack, she needed someone to draw pictures for her book.

“He said, ‘You should ask my art teacher, she’s a really good artist,’” said Adams, whose parents Tom and Arlene Grande live in Carmel. “So, that’s what she did. I had never illustrated a book, and that’s not really my background in illustration. It’s always been a dream of mine, and I’ve always had a love for children’s literature.”

self-published in October 2015. The book is about a fun-loving giraffe with big dreams and friends from the zoo.

“Gail had worked for a magazine publication, so she was a writer but had never written a children’s book before,” said Adams, who moved to Traverse City, Mich., in the summer of 2016. “The publishing world was new for both of us.”

Adams said they did several school visits and book signings.

“It was doing well (in sales), but we took a minute to pause, realizing that self-publishing and marketing requires a lot of time and energy,” Adams said.

Now, after Marsh declared bankruptcy in 2017, both grocery chains are no more and the City of Carmel is considering how to fill the vacancies.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said urban planner Jeff Speck designed a redevelopment plan for the Merchants’ Square area in 2012. With the Marsh vacancy, along with many others in recent years, Brainard said there’s a need to revisit that plan.

As for O’Malia, the O’Malia family owns the shopping center, and several tenants are still operating at the site at 126th Street and Gray Road. City Council President Kevin “Woody” Rider insists there should be a grocery store east of Keystone Parkway.

Carmel’s other former Marsh store on Michigan Road will reopen as a Kroger, with an expected opening date in early-May.

MERCHANTS’ SQUARE Immediately after the Marsh on 116th Street closed in June 2017, there was talk about attracting another grocery to fill the space.

Other companies, including Kroger, Fresh Encounter and Needlers Fresh Market, bought several Marsh stores. A rebuilt Kroger and upscale grocer EarthFare are less than a mile from the vacant Marsh. There’s already The Fresh Market in Westfield along the Carmel border and a Whole Foods at Clay Terrace.

Brainard said now is the time to reconsider the future of the shopping center, which was built in 1971 and is owned by the Ramco-Gershenson Properties Trust, based in Farmington Hills, Mich.

The Speck document describes a plan to “create a pedestrian-friendly project while limiting negative impacts on existing businesses.” The report details which buildings could be demolished and which would be integrated into a new design.

MERCHANTS’ POINTE Another key part of the 2012 plan is to connect Merchants’ Square, which is north of 116th Street, to Merchants’ Pointe, a shopping center south of 116th Street. Merchants’ Pointe has had several vacancies in recent years, including Rodizio Grill, a Brazilian steakhouse that closed after less than a year in business.

“It is hoped that a limited redesign of this site, along with a better connection to Merchants’ Square, might allow it to succeed,” the report states.

Brainard said officials from Merchants’ Square property owner Ramco-Gershenson Properties Trust have seen the plan and discussed it with city officials, but it’s likely that another developer would have to purchase Merchants’ Square to kickstart redevelopment. Brainard said the city is searching for buyers to make that introduction.

Current spoke to representatives from Ramco but they didn’t call back with a comment.

“Unless it is remade dramatically, Merchants’ Square has no reason but to expect a continued slow decline,” the report states.

The report recommends a mixed-use neighborhood center with roundabouts, walking paths, tree lines and multi-story buildings with streetside parking and possibly parking garages.

Brainard said the walkable design would benefit Carmel.

“It would really open this up,” he said. “It should be a pedestrian-friendly area.”

O’MALIA Rider said at-large councilors and those who represent the east side are focused on the O’Malia vacancy. Rider said a grocery store needs to go into that space.

“Carmel has to have a grocery store east of Keystone,” he said.

Rider said all options are being discussed, and councilors will keep the public informed on any major developments.

“We’re engaged in discussions because this is important to the people of Carmel,” he said.

Although there are several thriving tenants in the shopping center, Brainard

said the large vacancy could provide an opportunity to rethink the center’s design. He said it’s up to the owners, but the city is willing to assist with plans.

“The center is older,” Brainard said.

“It might make for a better value to start over.”

Duke Hardy, of Barrett & Stokely, who has managed the center since 2003, said he’s not aware of any redevelopment plans by the owner. He said officials have not talked with the mayor about a plan. He said the family is considering its options in regard to replacing the grocery store tenant or selling the property to someone who could redevelop the area.

Questions and answers Commentary by Terry Anker The sage once said, “God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we’d listen twice as much as we talk.” That may well have been the intention, but in practice, it rarely seems to work out that way. Too often, we share our points of view with little notion of the perspective of the folks with whom we are interacting. With age comes a bit of wisdom and, if we are lucky, a slowing of our belief that we “know” what the other person has in mind without taking the time to ask them. Yet, we can still seem eager to hear our own voice.

In conflict with others at work or at home, we feel compelled to air our grievance. We explain our take on the perceived or real transgression and demand contrition or even retribution. But, how do we know that our assumptions are valid? 9 In working to resolve disagreement or performance issues in our businesses, we work to lead with questions rather than accusations. Young managers are coached to ask two questions before making any statements. The first must be a sincere effort to avoid allegation. The second question is designed to require the interrogator to listen to the answer of the first. Moreover, active listening can clear one’s mind of his or her own bias. Too often we hold our breath while others speak, our mouths already full with our response even though the other speaker has yet to communicate.

What point can be found in a question if we rarely bother to listen to the answer?

Cluster’s last stand Commentary by Bill Shaffer As official non-mayors of Carmel, you and I need to applaud our local newspapers for calm, unbiased PLAIN TALK coverage of two breaking stories: The Great Carmichael Hotel Con and the proposed manipulation of gifted school kids.

So, what are the problems to be solved and who’s in charge?

City Hall says we need a boutique hotel adjacent to the mostly vacant Palladium.

There are three upscale hotels in Indianapolis. We’re in debt up over our ears already. Another bond issue in an uncertain market seems stupid. Local news reports have stated the project is too risky for private investors. Subsidies eliminate risk for private partners but not for taxpayers.

The city council has made unilateral decisions without consulting voters, not only for the hotel project but for more than $800 million in other debt. Those in charge of the Hotel Carmichael calamity are a half-dozen elected persons in City Hall. Non-mayors’ opinions are unwanted.

As for the proposed Total School Cluster Grouping, six of the top 10 elementary schools in the state today are in Carmel.

Eight of the top 15 are there. Parents of achievers are happy with the former sys-

tem. No protest marches. No problem.

I asked the Purdue Gifted Education Resource Institute what problem TSCG solves and how it knows improvement has happened. In a 455-word cluster of techno-babble, I learned it solves unspecified problems of youth with gifts and talents. Gee. I also learned teachers are to selfreport what’s going on and tell how they feel about it. More work for teachers who are doing a swell job without it. As for who’s in charge, the school board has punted and the administration has gone to the mattresses. Right now, Purdue social engineers seem to be calling the shots.

Worst of all, the institute committed a redundancy in naming TSCG. “Cluster” is a “group.” The TSCG enterprise is built upon a redundancy. Shame on them.

We non-mayors are lucky alert journalists shine the light of reason on arrogant, over-reaching, petty elitists spending our money without asking.

I’d like to share a couple “fashion” incidents that have left me utterly confused about how someone my age is supposed to dress.

HUMOR I was with my youngest at Forever 21, a cheap clothing store aimed at, as the name implies, young adults. Let me repeat, I. Was. With. Her. Not the other way around. As usual, it was a zoo, so I sent her along to Pac Sun while I stood in line with her purchase, a denim jacket. I see a current student across the way and wave, immediately besieged by two opposing thoughts: “Yes! I’ll be known as the cool teacher who shops at Forever 21!” and “No! I’ll be called the old biddy who is seriously mistaken about her ability to rock a circa 1986 crop-top.”

Then, three days later, I find myself at Forever 21 Red, the rack version of the aforementioned, with my older daughter.

Again, I’m simply there in the chauffer capacity, not as an actual shopper. While standing in the dressing room awaiting my child’s “outfit” reveal, a girl emerges from behind her door in a baggy tee-shirt, highwaisted jeans and Top Gun aviators. She assesses herself in the mirror, notices me and asks for my opinion, adding, “I mean, you were alive in the ‘80s, right?” Ouch.

Yes, I came of age amidst big hair, puffed sleeves and Tom Cruise-inspired everything, all of which are apparently back in style.

And no, I don’t want to appear out-of-touch with contemporary fashion trends. But if I embrace the retro-’80s look for myself, won’t I be committing the even bigger fashion faux pas of dressing too young?

Editor, I am writing to express my concern and disappointment with Carmel Clay School’s decision to do away with the Challenge Program for high ability/ gifted children at the elementary school level. My daughter is a first-grader at Forest Dale Elementary, and from a very young age was tested and identified as highly gifted. My family specifically chose to live in Carmel due to my own positive experiences being educated within the Carmel Clay Schools gifted and talented program.

The importance of situating gifted children among their intellectual peers and recognizing gifted children as having different academic needs than their grade-level peers has been documented. Meeting the needs of gifted children requires more than simply giving them a harder book to read, a more advanced assignment or extra work. These children require different work than their grade-level peers.

Just as teachers who work with special needs students must obtain training to meet the particular needs of their students, it also is important for teachers who will be working with gifted and highability students to be trained to recognize that this subset of students does indeed have special learning needs, and to then meet those needs.

Given that gifted students are not only capable of learning more and in greater depth than their gradelevel peers, and that they require different education

than their grade-level peers, I am dismayed that Carmel Clay Schools has decided to do away with classrooms in which gifted students’ needs can be addressed. Within the Total School Cluster Grouping model, teachers must make one curriculum work for all ability levels and be pulled in different directions by the unique needs of different learning clusters.

Gifted learners cannot be expected to thrive and reach their academic and creative potential in a model in which their needs are only addressed 30 percent of the time within a curriculum designed for grade-level peers.

I am deeply dismayed that Carmel Clay Schools has abruptly put an end to services at the elementary level that were intended to meet the needs of gifted students. These students’ learning needs are so remarkably different from their grade-level peers that one teacher cannot adequately address them within a typical grade-level classroom environment.

I am also dismayed that the Total School Cluster Grouping model was adopted without a vote by the school board and without the general knowledge of the Carmel parent community. It is my understanding that most elementary school teachers were not even aware of this fundamental change for the 2018-19 school year until a few months ago.

Editor, Carmel is a great place to live, which has been recognized by many national publications recently. I have enjoyed living here my whole life and being a Boy Scout in the community.

I am writing because I am worried about the small pets in our neighborhoods. There have been multiple sightings of coyotes over the last several months in Carmel. I have heard that many pets—especially cats and small dogs— have gone missing in this same time period. I realize my neighbors should remove pet food and water sources from outside of their homes to keep the wild animals as far away as possible from homes where small pets might live.

At night, bright lighting of an area where a pet is might help. Our family takes a flashlight along when we walk our dog at night to try and keep the wild animals away since our dog weighs about 11 pounds.

I do not think the wild animals should be killed. However, I do think that there should be a plan in place to control the coyote population. I understand that trapping may create a “false sense of security,” but I worry that soon the coyote population size will grow to uncontrollable levels.

I encourage our city council to look for a solution. In the meantime, I hope my neighbors are watching their animals closely when they are outside.

Gorging on social media buffet Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have a friend who posts everything he eats on Facebook, or what could be called Feed Your Face Book.

HUMOR Joe photographs daytime snacks, late-night raids of the fridge, even the doughnuts he hid under the front seat of his car. He has uploaded 3,000 food pictures onto his Mac — including a few dozen Big Macs, I might add. He wants to create a new app called Snack Chat. It’s like Snapchat: The picture of the food disappears in a few seconds, as quickly as Joe’s lunch.

Unlike Joe, I’ve been uploading meals and then downloading them onto my shirts for more than 60 years. It’s not uncommon for people to ask me about certain food choices I have posted on my clothing for all my friends to see.

“Looks delicious, Dick. Wasn’t that the special at Olive Garden last week?”

“Been to a ball game, Dick? I recognize the mustard.”

Sharing your food intake encourages cheating, just like online dating. People sometimes fudge their age. And talking about fudge, what’s to stop a woman from

taking the Hershey bar she ate for lunch and Photoshopping it into a little plastic bag filled with baby carrots? Men can be just as deceiving. Sure, it looks like a $45 ribeye from St. Elmo, but it’s really just a cheap piece of beef off the grill at Golden Corral.

I eat a lot of meals in the car, so this would also create a bit of an inconvenience for me and jeopardize my already questionable driving record.

“You suddenly pulled off onto the I-70 shoulder.”

“Sorry, I was just taking a photo of my fish sandwich.”

“Sir, this time I’m only going to issue a warning: Those are really high in sodium.”

I don’t think posting meal photos on Facebook will catch on here in Indiana. Hoosiers are good people with high moral standards. They don’t want their kids looking at corn all day on the internet.

Fat Dan’s Deli owner, Dan Jarman, who owns two other Fat Dan’s in Indianapolis, said he bought Crust with the intention of turning it into a third Fat Dan’s.

“I have a pretty strong brand as Fat Dan’s,” Jarman said. “To be able to expand that brand up north is very appealing to me.”

Chicago-style cuisine includes items such as Italian beef sandwiches, hot dogs and smoked meats, according to Jarman.

“It’s the blue-collar stuff, the quick and easy street foods,” he said. “When I think of Chicago, I always think of baseball and hav-

ing an Italian beef sandwich and a hot dog at the game.”

Jarman bought Crust from former owners Dustin and Azin Brown on Feb. 18. What appealed to him most was the restaurant’s large pizza ovens. Jarman plans to use them to create pizzas and calzones not available at other Fat Dan’s Deli locations.

“We’ve altered some of the recipes of the pizzas and calzones, and we will still serve those,” he said.

Jarman has tried to retain as many of Crust’s employees as possible.

“I told them that we’re keeping everybody here if you want to stay and work with us,” he said. “We gave everybody that opportunity, and several of them have taken it.”

Jarman wants to get staff back to work as soon as possible. He was aiming for an opening date of April 2.

Some Like It Hot began as a small Fishers Farmers Market operation in the summer of 2016, but co-owner Elaine GROWTH Salgado soon realized there was a market for tamales and salsa.

“Within the third week of us being at the farmers market we started selling 500 tamales and 1,500 ounces of salsa in four hours on Saturdays, and we capped it at that,” Salgado said.

The recipes are her husband Fernando’s, who hails from Mexico. The couple lives in Noblesville.

“He loves to cook, which is why people were trying to convince us to start a restaurant, but we said no, we don’t want to be tied down, so the farmers market was a good alternative,” Salgado said.

Some Like It Hot is a part of Indiana Grown, which connects retailers with locally grown items. A food broker contacted the Salgados, and Some Like It Hot has started to expand. It will now be sold at Market District in Carmel and is distributed through Piazza Produce.

“Market District tried our food, and in the same meeting, they said this is what we want,” Salgado said. “That was just within the last month.”

The Salgados have set their goals higher.

They want to distribute across the state and possibly the nation. To do so, Some Like It Hot must operate out of a commercial

kitchen, which the Salgados are seeking.

Salgado encourages other small businesses to not be afraid to take the leap to grow.

“Take advice from other people, be willing to have an open mind and keep working hard and take that scary step,” she said.

“It’s hard to let go of a full-time job and just plunge into it, into the unknown, but you can’t make it if you don’t (try). It’s scary, but it’s thrilling and really exciting, and right now it’s paying off.”

There’s a chance that his HQ2, as it’s being called, could end up in WORKPLACE Indianapolis. Some are doubtful; others think Indy is the perfect place. We all agree it would be a gold mine for the region. But let’s set that aside. One of the reasons Amazon is called one of the greatest places to work are the perks for employees. That is something any businessperson could learn from.

Sure, they have health insurance, a 401K, vacation and paid time off. Pretty common, even in this economy.

Charles Prince to guest conduct at Carmel Symphony Orchestra

Prince The concert, set for 7:30 p.m. April 14 at The Palladium in the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, will feature concertmaster and violinist Larry Shapiro, who has been the CSO concertmaster since the 2005-06 season. Shapiro is a full-time professor of violin and artist-in-residence at Butler University.

“The end of the show we are doing the “Suite from Swan Lake,” which has an extended, beautiful violin solo,” Prince said.

“It’s Larry’s show but I’m there to help, and I’m enjoying it immensely. Larry is a legend in the classical music world, so I’m really honored and thrilled to be working with him in this capacity.”

Prince loved working in The Palladium.

“It’s a great concert hall,” Prince said. “I first heard about it through Michael Feinstein, who is a dear friend of mine. Michael is the person who made the connection to me with the Carmel Symphony.”

Feinstein is the artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts. Prince became connected with Feinstein through Prince’s grandfather, Saul Chaplin, who won three Academy Awards for collaborating on the scores of “An American in Paris,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “West Side Story” Prince, who is the director of the Plainfield (N.J.) Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in New Jersey, first performed with the CSO for the Holiday Pops program in December 2016.

Prince recently performed with Anchorage Opera in Alaska “My manager tells me when I’m going and where I’m going,” Prince said. “I have traveled exclusively to Europe and lived 10 years in Vienna. I have a fairly strong connection to Austria and Germany. My first job was as a conductor in the former East Germany in 1989 before the (Berlin) Wall

This will be the final concert of the 201718 season and the final performance with Alan Davis serving as CSO president and CEO. Davis will retire in September.

“He’s a kindred spirit so I’m very sad that he’ll be leaving the organization, but I know he’s looking forward to his new life,” said Prince, who developed a friendship with Davis.

CARMEL SYMPHONY LEAGUE EVENT SET The Carmel Symphony League will host its annual Spring Luncheon at 11 a.m. April 10 at Ritz Charles in Carmel. Tickets are $45.

Proceeds benefit the CSO education programs that work to foster the musical talent and education of young artists, including the Family Fun! Concert and the annual Young Artists Competition. This year’s luncheon entertainment will be provided by Cheryl Wyatt, a former lead vocalist with the United States Air Force. She has performed with the Carmel Community Players and is a regular vocalist for St. Luke’s United Methodist Contemporary Worship Service.

“The symphony is extraordinarily lucky to have this group to help support us,” Alan Davis, CSO president and CEO, stated in a release. “Their work is invaluable and their dedication much appreciated.”

In just a few weeks, the major film studios will unleash their annual onslaught of prospective summer blockbusters.

FILM Superhero tent poles, animated family fare, disaster flicks, big movies with big stars and even bigger budgets will invade global cinemas in hopes of record-setting grosses and box office glory.

Standing in stark contrast to the high stakes gambits of the major studios are small, independent studios made up of talent whose shared vision is dedicated to quality filmmaking over bombast.

One such talent is art director Eric Gabinet, a 2006 Carmel High School graduate and Fishers resident. Gabinet has worked with Bloomington-based Pigasus Pictures, a studio that is committed to the Indiana community and developing local talent.

Pigasus is producing the upcoming “Ms. White Light,” on which Gabinet served as art director.

Gabinet has found a strong collaborative spirit in his experience with Pigasus Pictures.

he said. “Everybody’s voice counts, and everyone is treated with respect. There are issues, but everybody lifts each other up, and it’s a group effort. Egos aren’t there, and the artists don’t feel constricted by the need to feel important. When everyone is allowed to voice their opinions and everyone is open to suggestions, it makes the film that much better. We all wanted to make the best film possible.”

For Gabinet, the hallmark of good storytelling is the clarity of the director’s vision.

“The big thing about independent filmmaking is that the director has much more control with his own style,” he said.

Thinking pink this spring Commentary by Elizabeth Morse I’m not sure if it’s because I am spending part of April in Paris. Maybe it’s this crummy weather still hanging WINEderlust around? Whatever the reason, all I can think is pink! I’m suggesting rosé wines today. They are beautiful, food-friendly wines that are typically dry. Rosé is made from a variety of grapes. After the grapes are squished, dark-colored grape skins are allowed to hang out for a bit in the juice. Basically, the dark skins stain the juice and create lovely pink hues.

Rosé shouldn’t be relegated to warm weather. Nope, it is an excellent choice year-round. Here are my current faves, all on the dry side of the spectrum: Gerard Bertrand Languedoc ‘Cote des Roses’ Rosé, France. At approximately $15 per bottle, this is a value-priced choice. A tangy wine that seems like a cross between orange-cream and cranberry. It smells like peach and is a beautiful shade of pale pink.

For just a few bucks more ($19), try Campuget 1753 Rosé. This is an unusual grape juice blend of 90 percent Syrah and 10 percent Vermentino. It’s bigger as rosé goes, but the richness is lively and attractive.

With just a little citrus flavor, what mainly stands out is a more traditional strawberry flavor. A great choice with barbecue.

The splurge today goes to a California wine, Robert Sinskey Rosé of Pinot Noir, Carneros. A vintner known for splendid Cabernet Franc delivers this pale-colored berry bomb. Tons of juicy, bright fruit and great acid make this bottle a winner for sipping and pairing, approximately $32.

Cairo’s historic synagogue Commentary by Don Knebel Ben Ezra Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Egypt, located among churches in Coptic Cairo, an ancient area TRAVEL just east of the Nile River. Although conflicting stories explain its unusual location, it was the source of priceless historical documents.

According to one tradition, the synagogue marks the spot where the Prophet Jeremiah assembled Jewish exiles after Babylon had destroyed their Temple in Jerusalem in the sixth century B.C., with some claiming Jeremiah is buried nearby. Others claim the synagogue is located where pharaoh’s daughter discovered the infant Moses in a basket.

Nineteenth-century writers concluded the synagogue was once a church located where Mary bathed the infant Jesus during the holy family’s flight to Egypt. According to this account, now largely discredited, the church was forced to sell its building in the ninth century when it could no longer afford taxes imposed by Muslim rulers.

Whatever the truth of any of these claims, what is known is that the synagogue is named for Jerusalem’s Rabbi Ben Ezra, who

restored an earlier synagogue on the site in the 12th century. The synagogue became a repository for documents of all kinds that included the word “God,” and therefore could not be destroyed under Jewish law. When the synagogue was restored in the 1890s, builders discovered more than 250,000 documents dating from the ninth century on, including letters written by Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher who lived nearby after being forced from his home in Córdoba, Spain. This cache of documents, called the “Cairo Geniza,” is the world’s largest collection of medieval documents and provided new information about the life and teachings of Maimonides.

Today, with Cairo’s Jewish population down to a very small number, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, meticulously restored in the 1980s, is maintained as a museum.

I truly believe good grammar can make your life more awesome. It can lead to job opportunities, GRAMMAR GUY romantic relationships and even a syndicated column that makes you hyper-specifically famous. Conversely, bad grammar can turn your life into a country song. You can lose your job, your truck, your honey and your dog if your grasp of language suffers.

Today, I want to encourage you to read your emails twice before sending them. I’ll go one step further and say the same rule applies to tweets and Facebook posts.

Fairly or not, people make judgments about you based on the level of correctness of your syntax.

The other day I received a hilariously ironic email that decried the state of grammar among our nation’s youths. The writer passionately went on for a pagelength paragraph about how our collective grammar is going down the drain. She had some fair points; however, the subject line of her email was “Grammer Guy.” That’s my other column.

Although, if enough people respond positively to this article, I just may have to write it. I only point out the irony of a gaffe like “Grammer Guy” because the lady who sent me the email was railing against the state of our careless and uninformed grammar.

There are a few easy ways to avoid spelling and grammar gaffes in your public communications. First, read your work aloud prior to sending it. You’ll catch at least half of your errors merely by reading to yourself. Secondly, get another set of eyes on your writing before hitting the send button.

All bids and proposals shall be properly and completely executed on the proposal forms provided with the plans and specifications, which will include the non-collusion affidavit as required by the State of Indiana. The bid envelope must be sealed and have the words “BID – PROJECT NO. 16-ENG-22 – MIDTOWN PLAZA A bid bond or certified check in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the amount bid must be submitted with each bid. A one hundred percent (100%) performance and payment bond will also be required of the successful bidder. It is intended that actual construction of all work divisions shall be started as soon as practicable, and each bidder shall be prepared to enter promptly into a construction contract, furnish a performance bond, and begin work without delay in the event the award is made to him.

The Project consists of, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Midtown Plaza project includes the construction of a +/- 25,000 sq. ft. premiere urban plaza located in the heart of Carmel’s Midtown District on the northeast corner of 4th Street and Monon Boulevard.

Midtown Plaza will be a distinctly vibrant urban destination that is designed to provide a flexible space to allow the City to host year-round activates, performances, and events. The plaza construction includes the fabrication and installation of shade structures, urban bench swings, broad platform benches, fire pit, custom lighting, and audio/ video equipment. The construction also includes the installation of special pavements, concrete sidewalk, movable furniture, landscape plantings and turf areas, soil cells and structural soil, concrete foundations, subsurface drains and storm sewer structures, irrigation, power and communications conduits, wiring and other components, and other miscellaneous utility work.

Contract Documents for the Project have been assembled into one bound project manual, which together with drawings, may be examined at the following locations: City of Carmel Department of Engineering - 1st Floor One Civic Square Carmel, IN 46032 (317) 571-2441 Copies of such drawings and project manuals must be obtained from Reprographix (Reprographix.com). Payments and costs of Contract Documents are non-refundable.

Bidders shall assure that they have obtained complete sets of drawings and Contract Documents and shall assume the risk of any errors or omissions in bids prepared in reliance on incomplete sets of drawings and Contract Documents.

This Project will be funded by the City of Carmel.

A pre-bid conference for discussions of the Project, the bidding requirements and other important matters will be held on April 11th 2018 at 8:00 a.m. in the Caucus Room on the 2nd Floor of City Hall (One Civic Square). All prospective bidders are invited to attend the pre-bid conference. The pre-bid conference is not mandatory.

For special accommodations needed by handicapped individuals planning to attend the pre-bid conference or public bid opening meeting, please call or notify the city of Carmel, Engineer’s Office, at (317) 571-2441 at least forty-eight (48) hours prior thereto.

No bidder may withdraw any bid or proposal within a period of thirty (30) days following the date set for receiving bids or proposals.

The Carmel Board of Public Works and Safety reserves the right to hold any or all bids or proposals for a period of not more than thirty (30) days and said bids or proposal shall remain in full force and effect during said period. The City of Carmel reserves the right to reject and/ or cancel any and all bids, solicitations and/or offers in whole or in part as specified in the solicitations when it is not in the best interests of the governmental body as determined by the purchasing agency in accordance with IC 5-22-18-2 Christine S.
