New service to connect Indy residents to Hamilton county jobs – For several years, Hamilton County residents have enjoyed commuter bus service from Carmel and Fishers to downtown Indianapolis. Now, Marion County residents with far northside jobs also have an opportunity to take a commuter bus to work. A new transportation link from Indianapolis to Fishers and Carmel with shuttles to workplaces is designed to improve access to jobs.

MTE students and CHS junior aid natural disaster victims – The Mohawk Trails Student Council and fifth-grade classes worked with Sara Spence, junior, to run a Comfort Kit Drive that provided aid to natural disaster victims. Students raised more than $300 and collected almost 600 items for the kits to be donated to the American Red Cross.

Clay Middle School announces new principal editorial@youarecurrent.com Last Monday at the Carmel Clay School Board meeting, Todd Crosby was unanimously approved as the successor to Clay Middle School Principal Gary Huddleston, according to a press release. Huddleston is retiring at the end of June.

Crosby is coming from a position as the director of APEX, “a project-based small learning community,” and as the assistant principal of the “Blue House” at Decatur Huddleston Middle School in MSD Decatur Township.

Teachers from the school gave input into the selection by way of surveying applications, interviewing candidates and giving opinions to the board before the final decision was made.

Prior to his position at DMS, Crosby was the principal of Triton Central Middle School in Fairland. He has also worked as a social studies teacher in both Indiana and Illinois.

He holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Aurora University and a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University.

CHS student finishes first in state fashion competition – Greg Dugdale, Carmel High School advanced fashion student, earned first in the Family Career and Community Leaders of America state competition, and will be representing Indiana at the national competition. His entry was a fashion garment made from recycled material.

Carmel High School news magazine earns gold – The 2010-11 HiLite (print) and the 2011-12 HiLite Online both earned the highest honor – Gold Crowns – at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) 88th Annual Scholastic Convention. Since 2004, the HiLite print publication has earned Gold or Silver Crowns eight times. The HiLite Online website has earned Gold Crowns three years in a row.

Changes in absentee voting – New this year for voters wishing to cast an absentee/early ballot in person must enter the Government and Judicial Center through the west doors of the building, back by the plaza area. No longer can voters come in the front doors on Eighth Street for voting purposes. Absentee voting is available 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Commuter lines expand to Fishers, Carmel – The Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority has announced fares for a new reversecommute shuttle-bus service from park-and-ride lots in Carmel and Fishers.

Each one-way trip will cost $3, or $1 for riders with a valid, stamped IndyGo transfer pass issued the same day. The routes will originate in downtown Indianapolis at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Ohio streets, and head to the park-and-ride lots at the Carmel Meijer and at 106th Street and Lantern Road in Fishers. History of the Plum Creek corn crib

By Stirling Matheson stirling@youarecurrent.com Plum Creek Farms’ corn crib, from what used to be the Lynnwood farm, is set to be demolished. However, a group of residents has formed a task force to examine other potential uses for the structure.

Local real estate agent Virginia Kerr claims it adds value to the neighborhood by giving it a unique identity.

In 1934, Charles Lynn, vice president and general manager of Eli Lilly and Co., started a farming business. This wasn’t just any farming business, though. According to an article from the Carmel Clay Historical Society, the facilities at this farm were “state-of-the-art” in a time when “people still used outhouses.”

There were air-conditioned barns and steam pipes in the floors to protect cattle from the cold in winter. Horses had access to running water and the foaling stall was sealed with its own access to hot and cold running water. This farm employed 3 percent of Carmel’s residents at the time. Just a handful of the original buildings are still standing.

The Carmel Clay Historical Society will be running an exhibit on the Lynnwood Farm throughout this month.

Reaching out: Safe Families for Children Commentary by Jeff Worrell I use the term Carmel Housewife with every bit of reverence and respect I can muster. Krista brought it up when she said, “Diane and I are just two Carmel housewives.” She wanted me to know there were no highfalutin degrees, no specialized training; nothing but a deep belief both of them were called by God to do more.

And so they did. In 2008, Krista Davis and Diane Palma launched Safe Families for Children. Their mission is to give at-risk children a temporary place to live with volunteer host families in Hamilton County. More than 800 children have found a friendly, warm, loving place to lay their heads when the world seems like an ugly, cold, hopeless place. More than 45 percent of the children served by this amazing organization are facing the homeless threat. The rest have parents dealing with some other pending issue that is absolutely overwhelming.

There is a child from newborn to 18 years old whose parents have voluntarily agreed that for an average of 21 days, they should live with a family in Hamilton County. During that period of time, the parents will work on getting their life back in control so all can be reunited under one roof once again. Best of all, in many cases, the connection between the family in need and the family who needs to give continues on.

Safe Families for Children is a totally volunteer-based organization. Chuck Gross of Noblesville is president. Stephen Hadley is vice president and Randy Sorrell handles development for the nonprofit. The initial seed money to start the charity began with a grant from Oprah Winfrey. But after the first year, the fundraising is left to locals.

Krista told me about a mom who reached out to Safe Families for Children. Imagine, she has four young sons and her husband dies unexpectedly. She doesn’t have a job, and the problems she faces are overwhelming. No relatives nearby, no support structure. You guessed it. The boys find temporary, loving, safe homes while Mom focuses on getting her feet back under her. That story ended happily ever after because of Krista and Diane.

There is so much good within this story, but always room for more. Could you be a safe family?

According to the Dept. of Justice press release, Donald Hamilton of Carmel, 49, has been charged by the federal government with one count of health care fraud, five counts of false statements in a health care matter and two counts of money laundering.

Hamilton allegedly used Hamilton Medical Inc., a company of his, to generate false invoices for custom-made compression stockings manufactured by Compression Etc., of which Hamilton has a controlling interest. The invoices inflated the price of the stockings by three times before being sent to the Indiana Medicaid program. He has allegedly defrauded more than $1 million from taxpayer-supported programs.

“This state was built with the basic Hoosier

values of hard work, dedication and honesty,” said U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Hogsett. “For those who shun these shared principles, those who succumb to greed and embrace a culture of corruption, this office has a simple message: You will be found, you will be investigated and you will be brought to justice.”

The Dept. of Human and Health Services, FBI, the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations and the Indiana Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Unit have been investigating the case.

Hamilton faces a maximum of 10 years imprisonment for each charge of health care fraud and money laundering, five years for each false statement charge and a $250,000 fine per charge.

Community Health Network announces breakthrough cancer treatment – Community Health Network announced recently it is the first health system in Indianapolis to acquire the Intrabeam System, a new radiation platform designed to replace as many as six-and-a-half weeks of routine radiation therapy with a single 20- to 30-minute targeted radiation treatment. The new system, which delivers a targeted, intraoperative radiation treatment directly to the tumor site after lumpectomy, has been shown to be as effective as traditional radiation for certain women with early breast cancer.

ROAD CLOSURE – The U.S. 31 to Keystone Parkway ramp in Carmel will be closed Monday. Southbound traffic will be detoured over U.S. 31 and I-465 for a projected 90 days. The closing will allow the bridge over Cool Creek and the Hagan-Burke Trail to be rebuilt.

Relocation and Custody Advertisement

Job losses during this economic recession have forced many people to relocate in order to downsize their residences or to pursue new job opportunities. A move may also occur following a divorce, especially if one of the former spouses had temporary living arrangements while the sale of the marital home was pending. People may also relocate when a new relationships leads to cohabitation or remarriage.

Divorce and relocation are two of the most stressful changes in an adult’s life. Numerous details and tasks must be managed and completed. When children are involved, the focus is usually whether the change will affect their friends or which school they attend. But how many parents are aware that their move may violate state statute? Under Indiana Code 31-17-2.2, a relocating individual must file notice of their intent to move with the clerk of the court that issued a custody or parenting time order. This requirement applies regardless of whether the move is across the street, across town or to a different state and has caught many parents by surprise, especially those who divorced prior to the adoption of the new law.

Previously, the statute only required filing of a relocation notice when a move was greater than 100 miles.

Now, notice must be filed not later than 90 days before the proposed relocation, and the non-relocating parent has 60 days to respond to the filing if the parent seeks to prevent the relocation. The court takes numerous factors into consideration regarding the relocation, including distance involved, and whether the relocating parent is making the move in good faith and has a legitimate reason for the move. The priority of the court is to confirm that the move is in the best interests of the children. If distance is a factor, other matters must be addressed, including how the move will affect parenting time and impact the non-relocating parent’s relationship with the children. This can be a volatile subject for many parents, and the financial and emotional stresses can exacerbate the situation. However, communication and cooperation can minimize the conflict and the parents may be able to negotiate an agreement. Regardless, consulting with an attorney can help either the relocating or non-relocating parent understand how the statute applies to their particular situation and develop a plan of action to address their concerns.

By Kevin Kane • kevin@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Kirk Schueler had a long and productive career in the pharmaceutical industry, even helping to lead successful companies.

But his impressive résumé did little good when the economy took a turn for the worse.

Schueler took an early retirement in 2004 after 28 years in the pharmaceutical industry with companies such as Aventis and Sanofi. He planned to remain active in his golden years, immediately jumping into a Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan, and then going on to teach marketing at George Washington University.

However, the next few years brought the onset of the recession and subsequent draining of his retirement accounts.

"In 2004, the economy was booming," Schueler said. "I had $20,000 or more in stock options I thought would be worth millions. But, of course, the economy went down dramatically.

They ended up being worth $0."

Suddenly, his plans for a fun, yet productive retirement – like the funds that were to provide it – were gone, and he found himself scrambling to re-enter the workforce after a seven-year hiatus. But as he’d seen in his last few years prior to retirement, the industry was changing rapidly, and there did not seem to be a place in it for him, he said.

Despite his lengthy résumé, he said he had difficulty securing an interview, let alone a job offer, so he instead took matters into his own hands.

“I didn’t have much luck getting someone to hire me, so I decided to hire myself,” he said.

Schueler opened his first entrepreneurial venture earlier this month: Toppers Pizza at 12545 N. Meridian St. in Carmel. The Wisconsinbased company has 37 franchises in the U.S., but Schueler’s is its first in Indiana.

For this first-time entrepreneur, Toppers was a step out of his element, as Schueler said he previously had no experience working in or owning a restaurant. However, his decision to become a pizza-maker was made after significant research, and the move is giving him the opportunity to put into practice business and marketing principles he taught as a university professor.

At GWU, Schueler taught marketing, sales, advertising and sales management to undergraduates and master of business administration students, and he said he wasn’t long into his teaching career before he felt the itch to again put to use his skills and knowledge – this time as a small-business owner.

He chose the food industry because it, like his job as a professor, will allow him to interact with numerous people every day. Being among his favorite foods, pizza was an easy choice, but it took months of research to settle on Toppers.

After looking at other chains such as Papa Murphy’s, Schueler said he picked Toppers because of the company’s eagerness to expand, business model and his potential return on investment.

After all, his re-retirement is dependent on the profitability of the business.

Former Indianapolis franchising consultant Doug Boehme said Schueler’s situation is not completely atypical, as the down economy has spurred many retirement-aged individuals to take on the risks of business ownership.

“That scenario is a lot of what you see,” he said. “They (individuals) just don’t want to go back to the corporate world. They just want to take control of their own lives and go into business for themselves … A recession usually brings about a lot of this.”

Schueler said the change has been exciting and has re-energized him. In fact, he plans to expand his company – Schueler Enterprises – to include other Toppers locations in the state in the near future.

And while just a few years ago he was ready to be semi-retired and working 20 to 30 hours per week, Schueler knows his new goals and commitments are going to have him working more hours than most do during the prime of their careers.

But he’s ready for it.

“It will definitely be a minimum of 50 hours a week, at least initially, and it will probably be

Former Indianapolis franchising consultant Doug Boehme said franchisors prefer to find new business owners like him who have solid business experience, but very little, if any, in the franchise industry.

“Most of the franchisors don’t want the franchisee to have previous industry experience,” Boehme said. “The reason is they (franchisors) want to start with a clean sheet of paper … They don’t want someone who is going to come in and say, ‘The Big Mac is good, but I think we can make it better if we use a slightly different sauce.’”

Attack of the pink slime It is our position with the outbreak of pink slime reports, it is time we pay more attention to where our meat is coming from.

The term pink slime was first coined by Dr. Gerald Zirnstein to describe the process of taking trimmings from beef and combining them. The trimming mixture is then soaked in ammonium hydroxide to raise the pH levels and kill off any E. coli. The mixture is then added to ground beef as a filler, which will help keep prices low.

The term pink slime brings images of something that might be seen in a “Ghostbusters” movie, but has never been proven to be any worse than the meat used in chicken nuggets. While the slime may not be as harmful as imagined, we think it’s a good time to look at purchasing meat from local butchers or grocers.

A number of local butchers in the area provide meat that has not been artificially altered in any way. The blame lies with dependence on the tiny screen of our smartphones. How could we humans be expected to spend hours per day peering desperately into the 3-by-4-inch monitor without some negative impact on our vision? With tiny, tiny print and all-too-much information jam-packed into its alluring interactive screen, some of us have become dependent on the reminders, messages and news that arrive throughout the day. Yet whatever the reason for our collective and growing addiction, I hold it to account for my everdiminishing acuity of vision. When complaining about it, my less tactful friends will point out that for decades, I’ve awakened in the morning instantly able to see both near and far without assistance. And even as peers have succumbed to glasses, contacts or surgery, I’ve lived blissfully unaware of these challenges.

Given a few moments (and thankful my arms are as long as they are), I am able to bring into focus the bright blue screen audibly

notifying me of a call – or text – or update – I’m not really sure, but as soon as I get the phone in the right place, it comes into focus and quick, appropriate response follows! But even as our mechanical vision blurs, does the clarity in which we see the world improve? In youth, each and every matter would appear, be identified and dispatched without much consideration. Only later did we realize how poorly we had perceived the situation – how bad our vision really was. Bad career choice.

Bad family decisions. Perhaps, even the wrong spouse. But as life has progressed, doesn’t our vision measurably improve? Isn’t our perspective enhanced by life already lived? So even if glasses are inevitable, can’t we rest comfortably in the fact we have a clearer vision now than ever before?

Congratulations to the Carmel High School boys basketball team for winning the recent Class 4A state championship. Tips of the hat also go to Guerin and Park Tudor for their respective state titles. With respect to Carmel, it’s an incredible achievement for a program that all but started over in the aftermath of the bullying incident a couple years ago. Coach Scott Heady came in, his players bought in and thus was the ship righted.

Not to detract from the buzz this championship has delivered, but we truly believe there is a lot more to the bullying story than any of us on the outside have been told. In time, we hope, those with rock-solid knowledge of the details will come forward. For the meantime, the team should take a deserved bow for its accomplishment. Applaud its effort and achievement.

Our government was given a grade of F on public access to information, political financing, ethics enforcement agencies and redistricting. Legislative accountability – here’s a shocker – was scored a D-, although we’re surprised it, too, wasn’t given an F. No practical function for grain elevator Editor, The Mayor is right on the grain elevator issue.

It’s time to move forward.

I’ve done several projects for Indiana Landmarks and have helped it save endangered buildings. The cold truth is the grain elevator no longer has a practical function, and the cost of preservation plus the loss of redevelopment revenues are economically overwhelming.

Adaptive reuses have been studied for nearly 10 years. While I respect the gentlemen you quoted, I respectfully offer the question of “What’s the hurry?” is misplaced. It is common for people to presume there’s plenty of time.

It is also common for interests to suddenly be aroused when a deadline looms. However, it is unfair to pretend no valid process occurred simply because people weren’t paying attention.

Thank you for an article that was balanced and objectively factual. The site has tremendous redevelopment potential which would benefit the community – economically, aesthetically and functionally – for decades to come. The Mayor and the Redevelopment Commission are moving the community in the right direction here.

Fight or flee: The ‘Castle Doctrine’ Commentary by Carl Brizzi

On Feb. 26, 28-year-old George Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year old Trayvon Martin on the sidewalk of Zimmerman’s Florida neighborhood in what he claims was self-defense – Zimmerman has not been charged, but the case is now being investigated by the Dept. of Justice.

While the events surrounding this shooting remain cloudy, they have raised many questions about our self-defense rights. Do we have the right to fight? Or must we attempt to flee first?

The basic legal premise of the “Castle Doctrine” is there is no “Duty to Retreat” from a bad guy. Duty to retreat means if an intruder enters your home, you may not have a legal defense for protecting yourself with deadly force, unless you first attempted to retreat.

This concept makes my head hurt for a number of reasons. It is possible that someone could not only be criminally prosecuted for protecting home and family, but could actually be sued by the intruder or the intruder’s family (if you were a decent shot). This concept, while absurd, is at the

very left end of the self-defense law spectrum.

The laws in Florida and Indiana are at the other end. Our state has a much stronger interpretation of the “Castle Doctrine” called “Stand Your Ground.” This notion, also called “No Duty to Retreat,” allows for the use of deadly force by a person who has a legal right to be there – and no duty is imposed to attempt to “get away” first.

These self-defense laws are based on a “reasonableness” test.

It is reasonable for you, for example, to defend yourself from an attacker – it is not reasonable to shoot him in the back as he is running away. At the end of the 911 tape, Zimmerman tells police Martin is running away.

Without evidence indicating Martin doubled back for a confrontation, Zimmerman may not pass this test.

It is possible that someone could not only be criminally prosecuted for protecting home and family, but could actually be sued by the intruder or the intruder’s family (if you were a decent shot).

Trip down memory lane Laughs by Dick Wolfsie It’s been a tough couple of months for people who cherish the good old days. Hostess Twinkies are no longer being manufactured; the company filed for bankruptcy. Those tasty treats bring back memories of my elementary school days when I would always bring a package to school, eat one Twinkie and then trade the other to the class sweet-freak, Alan Guggenheim. In exchange, he let me look at his papers during math tests. My grades went way up. So did Alan’s cholesterol.

Last night I read the Encyclopedia Britannica will no longer be available in print form. The publishers have decided to go completely digital.

I’ll miss them. I recall opening my first set on Christmas morning. Later that day, one fell behind the bookshelf and we didn’t find it until we moved. It was yellowed of course, but I still relished it. Wait, I’m still thinking of the Twinkies.

Finally, USA Today reported last week bowling alleys in church basements are dying out. I’ll pause a moment while you compose yourself.

I talked to several neighbors who are avid churchgoers and none of them had ever heard of a church with a bowling alley, although my friend Bob explained to me prayer and bowling have always gone together. Negotiating a 7-10 split and recording a 300 are achievements of a

celestial nature. As in most churches, perfection is sought, but seldom achieved.

In the USA Today story, one man lamented that his church’s bowling alley in New Haven, Conn., had been there for almost a century, but it was not attracting very many players in recent years. He blamed it on all the competition out there for parishioners’ free time – movies, cable TV, social media. His wife thinks it’s because there’s no automatic pin machine and no beer is allowed in a Baptist church. Yes, I think she may be on to something.

I grew up in a Jewish home and my family attended a reform temple. I am pretty sure we didn’t have a bowling alley in the basement, but our rabbi was an avid golfer, so he was pushing the congregation to install an artificial putting green.

I belong to a Unitarian church now. I’m going to suggest to the board members we build a couple of lanes in the basement and start up a league. Maybe we could play your church team.

Good luck coming up with a clever name for your squad. Holy Rollers is already taken.

Don’t let the gardening bug bite Laughs by Mike Redmond Once again, the gardening bug has bitten, hard, right where I keep my brains, rendering me incapable of sitting down and them incapable of operating in any fashion we might call “sensible.”

Gardening has always been fraught with difficulty here in the city. For starters, the stuff under my grass doesn’t really count as soil. It’s more like pulverized landfill, a blend of rocks, broken glass, old chicken bones, pop tops, bottle caps and just enough humus to bind it all together. It is not known for its ability to sustain plant life unless, of course, that plant life is noxious. Then it is the perfect growing medium.

I have tried to augment the plot with liberal applications of topsoil, compost, manure and such. It just disappears. I’m not kidding. I can dump a yard of topsoil on there and within two days the garden will look just like it always did, with chicken bones and broken glass peeking out between the rows.

So here’s my solution: Raised beds. I have four, 4 feet wide by 8 feet long.

I figure, with the beds, I should be able to expand my vegetable crop (OK, at this size, cropette) beyond the old standbys of tomatoes and peppers, to add some things I like, such as … well, let me think. I like peas, but I don’t think www.currentincarmel.com

I’ll have the room. Not sure about green beans, either. I refuse to eat eggplant and I’m not wild about broccoli, so they’re out. Cabbage and potatoes are just nightmares because of the bugs.

I can’t stand zucchini for a number of reasons, including if you let it go one day too long, what was once a squash becomes a zeppelin.

So it looks like I am going to be growing a lot of tomatoes and peppers. Salsa, anyone?

Except to make salsa, I am going to have to invest in canning supplies, and then I’ll have to expand the pantry shelves to hold what I preserve.

So, let’s do the math: New raised beds plus 4 yards of topsoil plus bedding plants plus fertilizer plus bug stuff plus water plus canning supplies plus shelves divided by the anticipated crop means I am going to be paying something like $9 apiece for homegrown tomatoes.

Oh, I forgot one other expense. I need a new copy of Euell Gibbons’ “Stalking the Wild Asparagus,” with all the information about how you can eat weeds.

As usual, I’m counting on a bumper crop.

Osteoporosis: Is your therapy helping?

Commentary by Dr. Roger Spahr It is estimated 44 million Americans have reduced bone density. In 2005, 10 million Americans were affected by osteoporosis, increasing to about 17 million in 2010. Approximately 80 percent of those affected are women. Data on vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic proportions, hitting 60 to 70 percent of most persons in the U.S., and hitting up to 90-plus percent in highskin pigmented populations, such as Hispanics and African-Americans.

Therapies may include exercise, nutrition and medications, both chemical and hormonal.

Often, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry bone scans are used for screening. However, they are not sensitive to small changes and often not repeated for a year. How do you or your doctor know if you are being successful in your selected treatment? I will not discuss therapy, but a way to see if your chosen therapy is working.

Let’s discuss how your bones break down and then rebuild themselves. Have you ever seen the machines used by road repair crews that move along, crunching up old asphalt? That machine is followed by another that deposits new asphalt, rolls it out and bingo – you have a new smooth

surface. Your bones operate the same way. Osteoclasts break down old bone and are followed by osteoblasts that fill in the holes left behind.

This combo is called a basic multicellular unit.

This construction team typically works in tandem for four to eight months. One million BMUs are working to replace 8 to 10 percent of your bones every year. Like any construction project, debris or bone markers are left behind. These bone markers may be measured in the blood or urine.

Ratios then indicate if your acceleration of bone loss persists, or it has reversed into bone building.

You don’t have to wait for a year to find out. You can check every month or so until your ratios turn positive. This is called a Pyridinium Crosslinks test, which is available through most labs.

If you are putting the time, effort and finances into osteoporosis therapy, make sure you are getting a benefit. Perhaps you are doing great.

But if you are not, then you need to change your therapy to one that works for you.

Ineffective Botox

When I was in college, the mail used to come and was sorted and stored in a giant bank of mail slots. Everyone would walk in this small room, which also housed a bank of washers and dryers, and survey the mail slots to see if there was anything in the slot purposefully marked with their name.

I remember the smell of fabric softener and the way the warm humidity from the dryers curled the letters. I also remember the joy of getting mail. The much anticipated bit of mail from home or a girlfriend made you feel like you were on top of the world, or at least climbing that way.

Today, e-mail, bills and junk mail have robbed me of the joy of getting mail. Even so, the real lesson wasn’t in getting the mail, it was in why you got the mail, and that lesson hasn’t changed. You get mail when you send it. If you don’t send any, you don’t get any.

Back then, when there wasn’t an outpouring of bills and junk mail, it was all about those

precious deliveries of caring messages. And, back then as it is today, you have to send mail to get it. I watch my kids’ faces light up when the mailbox has letters carefully addressed to them wishing them happiness or inviting them to a friend’s party. They love it, and I find myself wishing the bad-news box was filled with better news for me. It’s then I remember you have to send letters to get them.

You have to call people to get them to call you. You have to go places to meet new people.

You have to meet new people to get new sales.

As my dad always said, “They aren’t always going to knock on your door, you’ve got to knock on theirs.” Opportunity only knocks if you let it know where you are. Does opportunity know where to find you? If not, maybe it’s time to let it know where you are.

Move the needle: Mistakes Commentary by CJ McClanahan

In fall 1993, I started my first year of law school at Indiana University – Indianapolis. By the end of the first semester, I had come to the realization I disliked everything about studying the law. The next thing you know, I was waiting tables and looking for a job.

Personally, the theme is similar. During the years, I’ve had a handful of minor chronic ailments (e.g. – seasonal allergies) and tried numerous fixes for each one (I am now in my second year of allergy shots). My wife will be quick to point out I’ve had more than a few personal trainers, participated in multiple athletic events (ask me about a triathlon in Brown County), visited more doctors than pharmaceutical sales reps and will probably never again use the camping equipment in the garage.

I think it’s easy to look at all of this and say, “This guy is nuts,” or “How many mistakes can one person make?” I’ll be the first to admit that at times, it can seem like I’m all over the place.

However, during the past five years, I have decided to look at my approach in a different light.

It’s called trial and error, and it’s the only way I grow.

out a student loan, buying the books and enrolling at IU that I would hate law school. It would have been nice to know I don’t have the patience to set up a tent prior to purchasing all of that camping equipment.

Unfortunately, in the U.S., we have another term for “trial and error” – we call this process a “mistake,” and most people find it completely unacceptable.

Trial and error is part of life. I can’t guarantee you’ll be rich or live in a big house. But one thing I can guarantee with 100 percent certainty is you will make mistakes – lots of them.

The question is – how will you respond to each of these mistakes? You have one of three choices. You can hang your head and say, “I am a failure.” You can ignore it and experience trial and error multiple times (there’s a chance that on multiple occasions, I’ve gotten to work and realized my phone is still at home) or you can recognize the error and learn from it.

As with most things in life, the solution is simple. All you need to do is execute.

This time of year, thousands of Christians make a pilgrimage to the tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem, many having a powerful spiritual experience.

Surprisingly, they have a choice of tombs, and the one they pick may depend on their beliefs.

The first was located by Helena, who was sent to the Holy Land by her son, Emperor Constantine, to find sites important to Christianity. She returned in A.D. 328 with news she had found the tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher was soon built around the tomb. For almost 1,700 years, Christians have made their way to the cavernous church.

After the Reformation, Protestants began looking for another tomb. Protestants were thrilled in 1883 when English General Charles Gordon found a tomb near a Jerusalem rock formation suggesting a skull, which he thought identified the Biblical “Golgotha,” where Jesus had been crucified. For General Gordon, the clincher was a groove on the ground he thought had been used to roll a stone across the opening.

And so, with great fanfare, the “Garden Tomb” opened to the public.

In 1986, Israeli archaeologist Gabriel Barkay concluded the Garden Tomb was not used at the time of Jesus. He also made an observation that escaped General Gordon: The groove in front of the tomb sloped away from the opening and would have prevented the tomb from being closed by a rolling stone.

Guides at the Garden Tomb no longer claim it held the body of Jesus. But Protestant visitors still worship there, experiencing the same emotions as before. Others continue to experience comparable emotions at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. As with many other sites in the Holy Land, tradition and belief can be as important as archaeology. And for many, just being in Jerusalem is being close enough.

Spirituality Truth, Holy Week and the big picture LIFESTYLE

“Hosanna!” is an exclamation of hope, salvation, prayer and worship. It’s what the palm-waving faithful shouted (John 12:13) to celebrate Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on what we now call Palm Sunday. The people recognized Jesus as the Messiah, which made the Pharisees furious, which led to Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion.

“Hallelujah!” – a word not in the Gospels and a reality not immediately grasped at the resurrection – means “Praise the Lord.” Christians now armed with historical perspective, scriptural truth and spiritual assuredness exclaim “Hallelujah!” on Easter to worship the Risen Lord.

“Hallelujah!” is found only in Revelation 19:1, and is the “heavenly multitude’s” affirmation of God’s “salvation and glory and power.”

All four Gospels – the Bible’s books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – contain multiple chapters describing the biggest week in human history, when God as the sinless man Jesus was killed by sinful mankind to fulfill God’s plan of salvation for mankind and all creation by defeating sin and destroying death.

After 2,000 years of Bible descriptions, scholarly examination, church tradition and scientific investigation, doubters are still defiant, believers are thankful and reverent … and too much of the world still can’t see the big picture. But it is forever real.

What would it have been like to be there?

Matthew and John were there, but fled with the rest of the disciples when Jesus was arrested (Matthew 26:56). John returned and is the only disciple reported to have witnessed Jesus on the cross (John 19:26). On the third day, John and the disciple Peter raced to see the empty tomb (John 20:4).

Mark was there. He was the believer who ran naked from the arrest in Gethsemane (Mark 14:51-52).

Luke, a Greek physician and friend of the Apostle Paul, was not there. He is the only Gospel writer who was neither in Jerusalem nor an acquaintance of Jesus. But Luke is authoritative because he meticulously “investigate(d) everything from the beginning” (Luke 1:3) to create an “orderly account” in the most elegantly written of the Gospels aimed at educating the Greek and gentile world.

The accounts in Matthew 21-28, Mark 11-15, Luke 19-24 and John 12-21 vary in their descriptions of Holy Week specifics, which blurs the truth for some. What’s important to know is God’s clear truth isn’t just in the details; it’s in the big picture.

And the biggest picture, the truth, is Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!

What is a weed, really?

When it comes to a gardener, there is no truer statement than “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”

Case in point, the other day I received one of my favorite questions, “What makes a plant a weed?” I love to answer that one because it truly depends on the gardener and the garden spot. In short, if it wasn’t planted by the gardener, generally it’s a “weed.”

Now, before I continue, I will say if you are a farmer, the weed question is pretty cut and dry.

In a situation where a crop is involved, which is a monoculture, one oddball plant counts as a weed. And it’s bound to be aggravating.

As for me, there are plenty of “weeds” I love and let linger in my own garden – even though I sometimes curse them later – such as dayflower or wild violet. I just can’t bring myself to get rid of them, even though I know they’ll spread like wildfire and I’ll be grumbling and yanking them for days.

At any rate, one knows its own garden and if it sees something it doesn’t want in there, my guess is it’s comin’ out. Problem is with some things, when you pull them, they come back double because you snap their root. Not kidding!

So, the best defense in any case to treat for

weeds is with a liquid herbicide like Roundup, which works quite well. When the weed is small, it works better to control it and be sure to read the directions because a warm day is preferable to a chilly day to apply. If you’re concerned about the environment, Roundup’s residual lasts less than a day and is not toxic like you think.

But if you’re determined, use white vinegar or even a handheld torch to burn the tops off. Still, not kidding!

To prevent weeds that spring from seeds, put down a granular weed preventer (the earlier the better, only caveat being you can’t plant any desired seeds there afterward). It prevents the germination of seed altogether. So you may consider saving your newspaper to form a weed barrier in your beds, and then mulch right on top of it. Gardener’s tip: Wet the newspaper with the hose right after you lay it.

Also, fill those beds up with the plants you DO love and give the weeds less foothold if they should find you. And keep in mind some weeds truly can be one’s treasure.

Open-roof porch integrated with outdoor living space Commentary by Larry Greene Original porch: This home, located in the Windpointe section of Waterstone in Carmel, was built mid-’90s and the owners have lived in the home for more than two years. While the home has a beautiful wooded lot and existing screened-in porch, the backyard area didn’t provide the functionality the family needed. “We knew we wanted to remodel the outdoor area as soon as we moved in. The concrete patio was too small and not in-line with the rest of the house. We wanted to expand on it. The screened porch was showing signs of deterioration, so we knew we would either have to perform extensive repairs or totally remodel it. We decided to take all of the rotted walls and screens out of the porch and have a covered, open dining area.”

Porch modifications: The existing screen porch was modified to eliminate screens and knee walls and create enough comfortable space for casual dining for eight. The existing framing was modified and new decorative cedar corner braces were added. New exterior trim was added and a beaded ceiling installed, along with new ceiling fans and lighting.

Fire pit and hardscape with pergola: The

outdoor living design included a fire pit, seat walls, planter boxes and a grilling island. Bronze low-voltage lighting was added to illuminate the steps and pathways. The new patio features natural travertine stone, including rock-face stone copings for the post caps, walls and grilling area.

Stair copings were upgraded to travertine with a radius nosing profile.

Final results: The homeowners commented, “My husband’s and kids’ favorite part of the area is the fire pit. I like the open-porch dining area. Before, the small-screened porch was not conducive to the seven of us eating dinner out

there. Now, we have dinner outside all the time because the open space fits our family. It is a much more relaxing space now. The design of the three areas – dining, lounging and fire pit – flows nicely together.”
