Mayoral campaigns allege bribery

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Members of Carmel’s two mayoral campaigns have accused each other of bribery to keep Fred POLITICS Glynn, who is challenging incumbent Mayor Jim Brainard, from seeking the office.

Glynn, a Hamilton County councilor and first-time mayoral candidate, said that his Glynn then-campaign manager Dan Hennessey had a Feb. 3 meeting with a member of Brainard’s campaign and the county Republican Party chair. Glynn said Hennessey — who has since gone to work for Brainard’s campaign — reported back that Brainard’s campaign was offering Glynn $140,000 not to run against the mayor in the May 7 municipal primary election.

Allan Sutherlin, Brainard’s campaign manager in previous elections who now serves as a consultant, said he represented the Brainard campaign at the meeting. He denied that the Brainard campaign offered Glynn money and that the request for payment not to run came from Hennessey.

Brainard campaign manager Laken Sisko also denied the allegations.

“Under no circumstance would our campaign ever offer $140,000 to Fred Glynn,” she said. “We are judicious in how we invest our supporters’ funds.”

Glynn said after he rejected the offer of $140,000 not to run, Hennessey notified him approximately a week later that he would be joining Brainard’s campaign.

“He went on to say that the Brainard campaign offered him $40,000 to leave my campaign and come work for them,” Glynn said, adding that Hennessey indicated he was facing financial difficulties.

When reached by phone, Hennessey declined to comment for this story.

Neither side plans to pursue legal action.

Sutherlin said he and Hamilton County Republican Party Chairwoman Laura Campbell met with Hennessey at the Feb. 3 meeting before Glynn filed for office to show him polling numbers that they believed indicated strong

support for Brainard and that Glynn would have a tough time winning the election.

Campbell said it’s not unusual for her to meet with potential candidates before they file for office to discuss their campaigns and what is best for the party.

“I was looking to avoid a big costly primary, especially heading into next year’s presidential elections,” she said, and confirmed that the request for $140,000 came from Hennessey.

Brainard Sutherlin said the purpose of the meeting contradicted the notion that Brainard’s campaign is worried about the impact of Glynn’s candidacy and would therefore offer him money not to run.

“Why in the world would I offer a candidate that I consider a distraction anything other than (the question), ‘Why are you doing this to the party?’” Sutherlin said.

He said Hennessey’s asking for funds to pay Glynn not to run was the first time he’d heard such a request in his decades of running campaigns.

“It’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever experienced,” he said.

Glynn said that Hennessey’s departure has not negatively impacted his campaign.

“I’m not sure what they think they accomplished by bribing Dan, since he was not doing much at that time,” Glynn said. “My campaign team is still intact, and we have since hired another campaign manager. We are moving forward even stronger at this point.”

Brainard, who said he was not at the meeting and does not know the details of what was discussed at it, said that Hennessey has been working on voter registration, yard signs, marketing and other tasks for his campaign.

“He saw the difference in our campaigns and chose to work on (my) campaign,” he said.

According to his LinkedIN profile, Hennessey previously worked for the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, as campaign manager for Greg Pence for Congress and as a statewide field director for Mike Pence for Indiana. He’s also worked with campaigns in Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan.

Seniors honored for service

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com Two Carmel High School seniors were recently named Distinguished Finalists by the Prudential Spirit ACHIEVEMENT of Community Awards.

The nationwide program honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.

Armaan Goel founded Code for Change, a nonprofit that provides high school students with opportunities to volunteer in the tech field. One of the projects the group parGoel ticipated in was creating a digitized hall pass system.

“The hall pass was a paper-based system,” Goel said. “So, our goal was kind of to digitize that and make a mobile and webbased client that allows people to request passes, allows teachers to interface and for students to go in and out. We’re working on streamlining that process and making it more user-friendly.”

They also created a complaint registration system for the Indiana Civil Rights Commission.

“The system we created streamlines that and makes it easier for both the organization to deal with these complaints, but also makes it easier for people with complaints to register them,” Goel said.

Jonathan “Reece” Tofaute has spent the last 10 years teaching children with special needs to ice skate through Indy Twisters, a nonprofit hockey team his father founded.

“I started working with Indy Twisters when I was 7 years old,” Tofaute said.

“It was a very, very surreal but rewarding experience, especially after getting Tofaute to interact with some of the parents and having the opportunity to speak with them and hear their stories.”

Tofaute is humbled to be honored by doing something he felt he would have done anyway.

“It’s really about the rewards you get when you get to see how happy the kids are made by what you’re doing,” he said.

“I’m flattered to receive the award, but the point of what I was doing wasn’t to receive recognition.”

“Nathan and his team of helpers spent countless hours taking photos of each item and creating a uniform label for the outside of each tub,” Kathrine Kouns, CHS director of choirs, stated in an email. “They made sure to put each tub in a specific location based on the garment type and color, and Nathan created a database for logging all of the costumes so that we can quickly and easily find what we have without having to walk upstairs and stare at hundreds of tubs.”

Carmel High School junior Nathan Felix didn’t have to look far for inspiration for his Eagle Scout project ACHIEVEMENT for the Boy Scouts of America. Felix is a member of New Edition, an upper intermediate level mixed choir at CHS. “I asked a teacher if he had any ideas of things I could do for my project,” Felix said.

“He told me the performing arts department had this upstairs costume room that is filled with costumes and they don’t know what is up there and what was no longer usable.”

The costumes were stored in totes, organized by color, but finding exactly what was needed was still difficult.

“I created an online database that has a locator for each of those boxes with the costumes inside, so they know exactly what is where,” Felix said. “And if they’re looking for a specific type of costume, they can just type it in and a list of things will just pop up.”

Mayor: Hotel financing delay saves money

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com As the skeleton of Carmel’s luxury hotel begins to take shape adjacent to the Palladium, the city has not DEVELOPMENT closed on its portion of financing for the project, instead using Carmel Redevelopment Commission funds to cover the $1 million it has spent on the project so far.

The city expects to close on financing in early April, although it has had a financing agreement in place since last fall, Clerk-Treasurer Christine Pauley said. City officials declined to disclose terms of the financing because it hasn’t closed yet, but Mayor Jim Brainard said the delay was intentional and will benefit taxpayers.

“We saved some money by not closing and using our cash, and then we’ll reimburse the CRC when we do close it,” he said.

“Every day we avoid paying interest you save a little bit of money.”

City spokesman Dan McFeely said the CRC has saved “thousands of dollars” by waiting to close on the financing, but he did not specify an amount. He also said waiting to finalize the financing has always been part

of the plan to pay for the hotel and that no other projects have been affected or delayed by the hotel timeline.

The $40 million Hotel Carmichael is a public/private partnership between the city and developer Pedcor. The Carmel City Council approved $96 million in bonds to fund the hotel and other projects in September 2017, with $18 million designated for the hotel.

Pedcor contributed the land for the hotel and is responsible for the remaining construction costs.

Pauley, whose duties include processing city expenditures, said she has several concerns about the city delaying financing of the hotel. She said CRC Executive Director

Henry Mestetsky and Brainard have “taken advantage” of the CRC and city council approval of the hotel financing, which did not include a final date for bond closure.

“Instead, they placed taxpayer money at risk by signing hotel contracts, initiating work and paying contractors for their hotel work (close to $1 million) by using CRC-budgeted money with the anticipation that the CRC will be able to issue a claim for reimbursement to itself from the hotel financing,” she said. “If the CRC has the extra funds available to pay contractors for hotel work prior to loan financing, maybe the amount to be financed should be reduced accordingly?”

Craig Johnson, an associate professor in the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, said waiting to close financing to save on interest payments is not a “standard practice” and could be “a cause of concern.”

“The argument they’re making that these are free dollars versus dollars they’d be paying interest on is not a factual argument,” he said. “The dollars could be sitting in a bank earning interest.”

The five-story hotel is expected to open May 1, 2020.

This year is the 60th anSOCCER niversary of the Carmel Dads’ Club, and its Carmel Football Club, the soccer travel program, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

“We wanted to celebrate Carmel Dads’ Club history with being a youth sports organization around for 60 years, which is quite unusual, and just being such a strong fabric of the community for a variety of sports,” said Sommer, Carmel FC director of soccer operations. “There are very few youth organizations that are around that long. We wanted as a club to come out with an anniversary logo to celebrate the history and our role within Carmel Dads’ Club.”

Sommer said the logo will be used on spirit wear and uniforms.

The Carmel resident also wanted to celebrate the City of Carmel and its growth.

“As our kids travel all over the state and region, we want to show this is where we are from,” Sommer said.

When 2008 Westfield High School graduate Whitney Hamblin hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine SURVIVAL in 2016, she documented her six-month journey on social media. Producers from the Discovery Channel television series “Naked and Afraid” saw the documentation and reached out to Hamblin, requesting she interview for a spot on the show.

After several interviews, Hamblin was accepted.

The episode was shot in May 2018 in a jungle in Brazil. Hamblin and her show partner, Nathan Martinez, survived the three-week challenge. Their only prize was bragging rights.

“Essentially, it was how uncomfortable can you be and for how long and can you survive for three weeks with nothing but yourself and a couple of bare tools,” the 29-year-old Carmel resident said.

Hamblin and Martinez were given a 6-liter cookpot, a Chinese Dadao sword and flint and steel.

Hamblin said the first time she met her partner, they were both naked.

“When you’re walking up to a stranger you have never met in the middle of the jungle, there’s people taking video and audio, and on top of meeting a stranger you don’t know, you’re totally naked,” she said.

“At first, it’s incredibly uncomfortable, but you make it past that and start working toward the challenge within the hour. My partner and I very quickly moved into survival mode.”

Hamblin said insects were the worst part of the experience.

“The hardest part was the bugs. Not because bugs gross me out, but it’s just that there’s no escape,” she said. “You can never escape them. As soon as the sun comes up, all the gnats and biting flies come out. In the late afternoon, all the mosquitos come out.”

At the end of the challenge, Hamblin and Martinez swam 2 miles in a river for a water extraction. By the end of the challenge, Hamblin lost 19 pounds and Martinez lost 29 pounds.

Hamblin and Martinez got several major “protein kills” for food — an armadillo and four stingrays. They also ate snails, frogs and small fish.

Hamblin doesn’t regret her experience.

“At the end of the day, the things I learned about myself, the mental strength and fortitude I have gained from that challenge, those are the things that make it worth it for me,” she said. “I’m grateful for the experience.”

New director joins TherAplay

Bridge keeps minds sharp

Children’s TherAplay in Carmel recently hired Kathy Pelletier as its new executive director. She HIPPOTHERAPY began in January at the largest equineassisted physical and occupational therapy facility in the nation.

The nonprofit provides hippotherapy to children with various mental- and healthrelated issues from around the state.

“We take care of children within the special needs community under a number of diagnoses,” Pelletier said.

Her main goal as executive director is to spread the word about Children’s TherAplay in the local community.

“I really hope to get out into the community and share the stories of these families and these kiddos,” Pelletier said. “I want to help the community really understand how life-changing what is taking place here really is.”

Part of the way she wants to help spread the word is through fundraising events.

“I want the community to understand how they can help support the mission and

“Stimulating your brain and activity is also good for your physical health,” Pepple said. “The majority (of our participants) is 50-plus, so we’re looking for those empty nesters or people who lost their spouse who might be staying at home when they could be at the Bridge Center where they could be having fun.”

Hardwidge, 72, plays twice a week at the Indianapolis Bridge Center. Hardwidge has been playing at the center since he retired in 2011.

“I played when I was in college and then after I went to work, I didn’t play for 40plus years,” Hardwidge said. “In college

make it sustainable for us,” Pelletier said.

“I want to find ways that the corporate community and individual donors can get involved in supporting something that is so meaningful to our patients and their families.”

Carmel Marathon draws participants from across the U.S., beyond

In 2018, runners from 43 states and four nations competed in the Carmel Marathon.

When the 2019 Carmel COVER STORY Marathon is held March 30, runners with ties well beyond Indiana are again expected to run in the marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K and marathon relay.

Here are a few of their stories:

John Jenk, 70, has lost count of how many marathons he has run, but it’s more than 100.

This will be the Hales Corner, Wis., resident’s first Carmel Marathon, but he visited Carmel previously by biking from Indianapolis during a visit to see his daughter, Leah Jenk, who previously worked for Jenk the NCAA in Indianapolis.

“My brother-in-law (Stuart Kolb) has run Carmel once before, and I have a neighbor (Amy Ford) running it, so I might as well do it as a warmup for the Boston Marathon,” Jenk said.

Jenk will run the Boston Marathon April 15 for the ninth time. Kolb, from Green Bay, has run more than 100 marathons as well.

Carmel will be the 76th marathon for 76-year-old Tom Henderson, from Lowell, Mass.

His first marathon was the New York City Marathon in 1979.

“I ran for nine years and quit for 10 years,” Henderson said. “I started up again in 1995 and I’ve been running ever since.”

Indiana will be the 33rd state in which Henderson has run a marathon.

Henderson started running in 1976 after he quit smoking.

“I ran a couple of laps and I was coughing,” he said. “So, for a 33-year-old guy, I thought I’d better do something to get better for my fitness.”

Henderson, who has run in 24 Boston Marathons and completed all but the 2018 race, which he was forced to stop after 16 miles, keeps track of every shoe he uses

and every mile he runs. His running was halted when he was hit by car in April 2017, a week before he was set to run a marathon in Canton, Ohio. He had knee surgery a month later and has been rehabbing the knee ever since. He completed marathons in Iowa and Lowell, Mass., in the fall of 2018.

“It wasn’t very good, but I think I’m ready now,” said Henderson, who puts together bids in the public transportation system for Lowell.

Henderson sent an email to Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard asking why he should run a marathon in Carmel as opposed to elsewhere. He was considering another shot at the Canton marathon or trying one in Mississippi.

“He was a big cheerleader for the city and did a great job convincing me it was a nice place to come to,” Henderson said. “He followed up by having his office send a package on Carmel and the surrounding area.”

Henderson’s goal has been to run a marathon in all 50 states.

“But I’m running out of time,” said Henderson, who will assess after the Carmel race whether he can run another marathon in August or September.

Henderson ran at least 3 miles for 5,412 consecutive days before he got ill in 2016 with a blood disease. Henderson had planned to quit after 5,555 days because it was becoming a burden.

Carmel resident Mingzhou Nie, a member of the Indy Chinese Runners Club, made his marathon debut at the 2016 Carmel Marathon. He will be competing in his fourth one alongside his wife, Hong Jiang.

“I’m trying to help her achieve her goal, which is getting to next year’s Boston Marathon,” Nie said. “I’m going to be her personal pacer.”

Nie, who was born in China, already has qualified for the 2020 Boston Marathon.

He has a goal of completing the six major marathons. He completed the Tokyo Marathon March 3 and the Chicago Marathon in October 2018.

He plans to run the Berlin Marathon Sept.

“Initially, I started running to keep myself healthy,” said Nie, a network engineer for Salesforce.

Jillian Wright originally began running to lose weight.

“I’ve been running for four years now,” said Wright, who lives in Portland, Maine. “I’ve lost about 60 to 70 pounds. I told my dad I wanted to lose weight, and he was huge into running. He did triathlons and ironman events. He signed me up Wright for a 5K with him and that’s how I grew my love for running.”

Wright, 25, learned about the race from her brother, Alex Wright, an Indianapolis resident who previously lived in Carmel.

She is running a half-marathon in Carmel to prepare for her first full marathon in Kennebunkport, Maine, May 11.

“I heard (Carmel) is a really good race, and I’m real excited it’s flat,” Wright said. “The courses around here are hilly.”

Treasured trinkets

Carmel needs new mayor, city council

Commentary by Terry Anker Those of us who have occasion or obligation to travel with some regularity are confronted with the routine dilemma of what, if anything, to bring family, friends and colleagues to express that they have been remembered during the absence.

Airports and road-side convenience stores are filled with trinkets and talismans proclaiming that the bearer has some connection to the place in question. T-shirts and snow globes are transported from coast-to-coast and hemisphereto-hemisphere bearing status and affection. As the years roll by, the collections build and shelves are filled with endless kitsch and ephemera.

Many years ago, an autobiographical magazine essay shared the story of a now middle-aged writer who’d been the benefactor of his own traveling father’s largesse. In this case, the dashing dad would bring home miniature containers of shampoo from each hotel of his travels for his thenelementary school-aged son. The youngster found charm in their tiny size. As time passed, he lost interest, even found contempt for the “cheap” tokens. But years after his father’s passing, he still had scores of the diminutive plastic bottles. They came to represent something more. They connected him, across the miles and the years, to these simple, perhaps silly, gifts from papa.

Certainly, grand gesture and great expense could express affection. But can the smallest kindness, executed without fail, and offered with great and earnest sincerity, become that which we treasure most?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Several readers have accused me of making passive-aggressive comments about President Trump without proHUMOR viding evidence. Fair enough. In their emails, they also resorted to pointing the finger at others rather than defending Trump, which, if having been a mother for 20 years has taught me anything, means they cannot. The real question for me is, and I’m not being trite here, how can anyone still support him as the moral leader of this nation?

I understand why Democrats do not. He goes against everything that more liberalminded people stand for: open immigration, gun control, carbon reduction, equitable access to education, to name a few (though he does spend like a Democrat! Per the CBO, the federal deficit is projected to increase by another $100 billion this year. That alone should have more fiscally minded Americans completely losing their composure).

But how can anyone, particularly Republican females, continue to support a man who clearly does not respect women? I can chalk up his name-calling of Hillary Clinton as campaign mudslinging, but his total discount of Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony should have been a red flag to all Americans that Trump does not believe women are deserving of equal treatment.

And the fact that he refused to condemn the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, which ended with the murder of Heather Heyer, is reprehensible.

Disagree with me? Then defend him. I would love to learn that he is actually a good person.

Editor, Last week, Current in Carmel published a letter from Mary Kinietz-Boyden in which she stated her “adulation” for Mayor (Jim) Brainard.

Mayor Brainard has done amazing things for Carmel. Infrastructure planning, parks, the Monon Trail and Center, the roundabouts and more all indicate visionary leadership.

However, Kinietz-Boyden’s letter focuses on quality of life and mentions nothing of the governance, particularly in the last decade. After 20-plus years in office, the mayor has forgotten that he works for the people and not to his singular vision — hence, the reason we have accumulated $1.3 billion in debt with a city council that has largely been selected by the mayor.

Every citizen of Carmel needs to know that in the last two years Mayor Brainard and the city council ramrodded approval for a boutique city-owned hotel, despite public opposition. And, the city continues a repeated pattern of behavior of buying private property for appraised or above-appraised prices and then selling these properties to developers at a loss.

A new mayor and city council is necessary to bring sanity to a local government that has run amok in entitled spending.

Virtues of grumpiness Humor is helpful in combatting stress, but I believe grumpiness has its virtues as well. I’ll outline some things HUMOR that make me grouchy. They might be small, insignificant annoyances, but those are the best ones to get cranky about. I save humor for when I really need it.

I am tired of my Facebook notifications telling me things like: Suzanne Crowder has commented on Joe Rosen’s post about Bill Roman’s meme. I don’t know Suzanne, Joe or Bill. How annoying is that? No comment.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Peru.

I signed up for the language instruction app called Babbel. They sent me directions … in French. Merci d’avoir choisi Babbel. Voici quelques instructions pour faciliter le processus. That’s great — now I have to take French, also.

I want hand dryers in public bathrooms banned. They do not dry your hands. They blow air on your fingers. When I leave public bathrooms, my wife always asks me, “Why are your hands in your pockets?” Because they are still wet.

I’m tired of getting emails that say, You have won a free $100 Walmart gift card.

No, I haven’t. I have won the privilege of answering endless marketing questions so they can hook me up with people trying to sell me stuff. Does anyone ever get a $100 gift card? No clue. After the 60th or 70th question, I always give up.

I want there to be a law stating the number 0 and letter O can’t be used in passwords, because I can never tell the difference. I asked 9 or 1O people and it’s amazing h0w many agreed with me.

Finally, I am tired of my computer taking a siesta when I want to print something.

I press the button, and nothing happens except for bizarre clanking and groaning.

My computer repairman says the printer is WAC “thinking” (maybe it is thinking about why it cost only $69 but each ink refill is $80). I press it several more times. It’s still thinking, so I go to bed. Next morning, I have a neat stack of 35 copies — 34 more than I wanted.

READERS’ VIEWS Carmel much-improved in 24 years Editor, I have lived in Carmel for 45 years, and what a difference the last 24 years have made. We elected a mayor who had a vision for Carmel, and it has paid off for our citizens. We have many more parks, the Monon, Christkindlmarkt, Palladium, roundabouts that replaced traffic lights and an amazing downtown with many shops.

When I moved here the only restaurants in Carmel were Country Kitchen and McDon-

ald’s on Carmel Drive. The move from New York to Carmel was a shock. I had hoped to be gone in two years but now find myself living in Carmel and feeling like it’s the best city to live and work in, and it has been voted the No. 1 place to live, and it is.

Let’s keep all the great things Carmel has to offer and vote for Mayor (Jim) Brainard.

He has done an amazing job for us and knows how much better Carmel can be.

New leaders won’t beg businesses Editor, Carmel has been lauded by many publications over the years as No. 1. I believe in people in government power that act as if that is the case. Fred Glynn, Matt Milam and Tim Hannon will not beg businesses to come here with tax abatements, TIF schemes or

roundabout art paid with debt. They will instead prioritize and focus on ensuring city government does governmental things, rather than be used as a real estate development scheme to satisfy the unrequited SimCity dreams of the mayor and his cronies.

Freedoms rely on stable climate Editor, Our farms, our children’s futures and our fundamental freedoms rely on a stable climate. We ought to secure this national resource by taking on the climate threat.

However, I am a proponent of doing so in a sensible fashion. Our nation’s economists have just offered a clarion call on how to do precisely that.

Last month, 3,500-plus economists from across the country united behind one, sensible, step-by-step American plan to reduce carbon pollution. The “Economists’ Statement on Carbon Dividends” is the largest statement of economists in American history and features the largest number of

Federal Reserve chairs, Nobel Prize Winning economists and Council of Economic Advisors to the President chairs ever.

Earlier this month, Hoosier students called marked attention to the problem, and now, we Hoosiers have the opportunity to follow the prescription of the custodians of our nation’s economic well-being.

Members of Congress Rep. Susan Brooks, Sen. Mike Braun and Sen. Todd Young can and should lead the Republican Party and country toward smart, market-based climate solutions like carbon dividends. We ignore the experts at the peril of the American way of life.

Pay-it-forward college Editor, I wanted to applaud Ms. (Danielle) Wilson (in her column published March 12) for getting real about the burden of college costs on a middle class family.

Many members of the baby boomer generation attended public college at almost zero out-of-pocket cost; policies enacted after World War II invested in their education and lifted thousands of families into

the higher classes. Then, when the boomers took the reins of government, they decided they didn’t like paying the taxes their parents had and started stripping those education funds away.

Now, here we are. When some candidates urge us to vote for no-cost public college, they’re not being radical – it’s a return to a pay-it-forward policy that worked.

Choose to Move race moves to April

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Indiana Parkinson Foundation realized when raising money for Parkinson’s research, proceeds were FUNDRAISER almost instantly spent.

That’s why the foundation switched gears in 2011 to encourage exercise and support for those with Parkinson’s disease and their families.

One of the Indiana Parkinson Foundation’s main fundraisers, Choose to Move, is a 10K and 5K race and 1-mile fun run set for 9:30 a.m. April 13 at Witten Park, 13256 Saxony Blvd., Fishers. Indiana Parkinson Foundation Director Kim Williams said the seventh annual event is family and dog friendly.

In previous years, the event was held in September. But the foundation moved it this year because April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

A kick-off event will be held prior to each race. People with Parkinson’s will start the races by walking down a straightaway.

“Something new this year is, we know how many people give to our nonprofit, and we want to give back to our community,” Williams said. “So this year, the team with

SkyZone coming to Westfield

“I have four small children and they’re all active, and one of the things Danielle and I pride ourselves on is having fun with our kids, so we have been going to SkyZone for years, and I jump right with them,” Holsworth said. “It’s a big deal to us to be a part of our kids growing up. My kids love to go two to three times a week and jump for hours at a time.”

Holsworth owns the SkyZone in Fishers, 10080 E. 121st St. He also owns the new SkyZone in Westfield, which is slated to open at the northwest quadrant of Ind. 32 and Dartown Road before the end of the year. SkyZone will occupy 40,000 square feet of a building it will share with Laser Flash. “(SkyZone) will have the latest technology there is out there. We will have some virtualreality entertainment sections, we will have our mainstay, which is the dodgeball courts, trampolines and the stuff we already have now,” Holsworth said. “I think we are doing some really innovative technology on the

“I realized that I love working with animals and that it was something I wanted to dedicate the rest of my life to,” she said.

“Starting my own business gave me a new purpose, and it showed me that it was possible for anyone at any age to turn their path around and start fresh all over again.”

Kolodkin hopes her story of success will inspire others to pursue their dreams.

“I want people to know that it is possible to follow your heart and still be successful,” Kolodkin said. “As long as you have the drive, anything is possible.”

White River project progressing

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County Tourism President/CEO Brenda Myers is bullish about the future of the White River.

ENVIRONMENT “White River is central Indiana’s next frontier,” Myers told a OneZone audience March 13 at the Forum Conference Center in Fishers. “It’s timeless and contemporary.

The river sets us apart as communities who can work together to realize big dreams. It supports healthy neighborhoods and economies. It honors the past and improves the lives of Hoosiers for years to come.”

The White River Vision Project is a collaboration between Indianapolis and Hamilton County Tourism in partnership with Indianapolis’ philanthropic arm, Tourism Tomorrow.

The plan is to enhance the 58 miles of the White River in Marion and Hamilton counties. Myers said more than 100 people are serving on task forces.

“Last year in northern Hamilton County, 20,000 people canoed on the upper portion of the White River,” Myers said. “The fishing is really good, just catch and release.”

Myers said the project is nearing its action phase, testing ideas from the last nine months.

There are nine guiding principles, which are listed on the website, mywhiteriver. com. The chief one is restoring the river’s environment and ecology to enhance its natural function.

“Another is to watch that river health closely. Who wants to get into a dirty river?”

Myers said.

Another is to increase year-round activities to attract people to the river for arts and entertainment, recreation and learning.

Gregory Hancock debuts ‘Exodus’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com When Gregory Hancock decided to put “SUPERHERO” on hiatus this year, he was determined to create a comDANCE plementary piece.

“SUPERHERO” details the story of Jesus Christ. Now, Hancock has focused on the first half of the Bible.

Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will present “Exodus” for the first time at 7 p.m. April 5 and 6 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

It’s inspired by the book of Exodus, the second book of The Torah and Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). It tells the story of the Israelites’ departure from Egypt, led by the prophet Moses through the wilderness to the Promised Land.

“It’s probably my most important piece I’ve done in a long time on so many levels,” said Hancock, executive artistic director and founder of GHDT. “Not just dance-wise, choreographically or musically, but the themes and issues and relevance because we really haven’t learned from history.”

Hancock is not using biblical names, thus Taylar Green is cast as The Chosen instead of Moses.

“It’s definitely challenging to portray such a big story, a story that transcends multiple religions,” Green said. “The physicality of the show is really challenging. We keep moving. We’re definitely working on getting that stamina and rhythm to go a full-length show.”

Green said the story will resonate with a lot of people, the same as Hancock’s “SUPERHERO” did for several years.

“It’s contemporary looking. It could be any time or any place,” Hancock said.

Abbie Lessaris portrays part of The Chosen’s tribe.

“We all portray the 10 plagues that happen in the Bible with our bodies,” Lessaris said. “We put the plague upon the oppressors. For the scene of the burning bush, I play the voice of God that speaks to The Chosen.”

Lessaris said her favorite aspect of the show is The Chosen’s tribe is all women and children.

show is very empowering, and female empowerment is a nice message in the world today,” Lessaris said. “We lift each other up and do challenging things without any men being involved.”

The male dancers form The Oppressors.

“There are students from Anderson University in the show,” Hancock said. “We dressed them all very androgynously and anonymously. They are just this big scary group.”

The Oppressors wear black hoodies with ski masks, with their eyes showing.

Hancock said the 10 plagues from the Bible were made contemporary.

“Instead of frogs and lice, we changed them into pollution, desecration of the earth, gun violence, racism, selfishness, social media, government, poverty, war and death of the firstborn,” Hancock said.

“It’s very statement-making. Some of the plagues are hard to watch. They’re a little

disturbing. Art is meant to challenge us at times. Even though it’s hard for the dancers to portray them, I think it’s important we look at them in a different way. It’s one of my favorite parts, how the plagues are presented, and having The Chosen being a female is really important. The imagery is important. It opens where people are caged in by a fence. That serves as a metaphor for their freedom and the sea parting. It’s going to be a powerful imagery piece.”

Hancock said he has been collecting music and formulating ideas for more than a year. He started choreographing in January.

“The music is explosive and dynamic and aggressive,” he said. “But it’s also beautiful, tender and quiet. It’s all instrumental.”

CHS grad featured on ‘The Voice’

By Chris Bavender editorial@youarecurrent.com When Carmel High School graduate David Owens stepped onto the stage of “The Voice” for the final night of the MUSIC March 18 blind auditions, he said a prayer and tried not to think about breathing.

“When you start thinking about breathing, then you start to think, ‘Oh, god, I’m not breathing,’” Owens said with a laugh.

Then the lights dimmed, and the first notes of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” filled the air.

“It was a unique intro, because it’s really short, just a few notes, so I had to make sure I was really comfortable with it,” Owens said. “I knew I had to trust myself and that it was now or never and just do what I had practiced.”

Then, a chair turn by judge Kelly Clarkson, a show of approval that guaranteed Owens would make it to the battle rounds.

“It was kind of distracting. I was thinking, ‘Oh, my god, that is Kelly Clarkson.’ So, I was thinking about her and not the song, so I needed to focus again on executing it,” the 25-year-old Owens said. “I told myself before it started (that) I was going to leave everything out there on the stage, so I made sure I gave it everything I had, and if the other judges don’t turn around, they don’t turn around. I was already on the show.”

His mother, Becky Owens, a special education life-skills teacher at Carmel Middle School, was watching just off stage.

“In your head you’re going, ‘Oh, please, let a chair turn,’ and so once it did, I didn’t care what happened after that,” she said. “I think at that point if anything else didn’t happen, if no other judges turned their chairs, I knew the door hadn’t closed, his journey would continue.”

Owens’ journey began as a young child singing around the house with his six siblings. He also sang at church and eventually joined the choir in eighth grade. He later became a member of the Ambassadors show choir at CHS. “All I wanted to do was sing. It was absolutely my passion,” Owens said. “I was looking at potentially going to school for that, and in that process it hit me that what if something happened to me and I couldn’t sing again?” Owens said. “If I get in debt to have a music degree and can’t use my voice again, where would I be?”

Instead, he pursued another passion, storytelling and journalism. He graduated from Indiana University in 2016.

“It was a tough decision to make at 18 years old,” the Indianapolis resident said.

“So, luckily by the grace of God, I have this opportunity to still pursue (music).”

Owens’ audition was taped in November 2018, shortly after the birth of his son, Emmett. His son and his wife, Kayla, were on his mind as he prepared to sing for the judges.

“This is my dream I’d put to bed so many years ago and I want my son to feel validated one day that his dad went after his dreams,” he said. “When he goes after his dreams one day, I don’t want him to see me as an example of falling on my face but taking my dream seriously and putting in the work.”

Although winning “The Voice” is the goal, Owens said the bigger goal is to be true to himself.

“And to be supportive of the incredible artists on this show,” he said. “I’ve become friends with a lot of them and, my god, they are so gifted and talented and just incredible people. I just want to soak it up. I don’t want to leave feeling worried about what I could have done differently, but knowing I did my best and shared the stories I was given to share. “‘The Voice’ gives you a platform with one of the largest audiences in the world, so I want to enjoy that and be appreciative.”

Up next for Owens and his fellow competitors are the battle rounds.

“Our Carmel-based family business is called Presto Kombucha and we launched in 2014 at Indy’s Kitchen,” Murdick said. “We are a commercial kombucha wholesaler.”

Murdick’s fiancée, Irina Mueller, and his 12-year-old son, Calvin Murdick, help with the business.

Murdick is a musician who primarily performs as a horn and alphorn soloist and chamber musician.

Keating, a partner in Carmel’s Art on Main, will display her mosaic work at the Marketplace for the fourth time.

“I love meeting so many mosaic art fans and sharing fun mosaic art,” she said.

Main St., Westfield What to get: Buffalo Chicken Nachos Price: $10.50 Anna’s take: I’m a buffalo-chicken fiend, so anytime I can order anything involving buffalo sauce and chicken, I do. I ordered Wolfies’ Buffalo Chicken Nachos. They are definitely a shareable item. Grilled buffalo chicken, mozzarella, cheddar, shredded lettuce, house-made ranch, tomatoes and onions are heaped on top of a platter of

tortilla chips. I was starving and still barely made a dent in this meal. Wolfies also recommends the menu item, so you know it’s a good choice. Wolfies has restaurants in Carmel, Noblesville, Fishers and Geist, so there’s likely one nearby.

Suggested pairings: Wolfies Grill features a good variety of beers on tap and an array of cocktails. I suggest the Bulleit Old Fashioned, which, as the name implies, uses Bulleit bourbon.

1. Arched screen openings were used on the lower porch to match the arched transom windows in the home.

4. The hip roof was extended from the home to create a good architectural transition.

Taipei’s Grand Hotel Commentary by Don Knebel Taipei, Taiwan is a modern city of nearly 3 million people. One of its most popular hotels was designed to reflect a dramatic cultural change.

TRAVEL After Japan gained control of Taiwan from the Chinese in 1895, it set out to establish Japanese culture on the island. As one of its earliest efforts, it built a major Shinto shrine atop Jiantan Mountain in what is now Taipei. As the highest of an eventual 65 shrines, this shrine became known as the Taiwan Grand Shrine. After the defeat of Japan in World War II, Taiwan came under control of the Republic of China, with its capital in Beijing.

In 1949, after losing the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai-Shek led several hundred thousand of his soldiers and about 2 million refugees to Taiwan. He proclaimed Taipei to be the provisional capital of the Republic of China, which required an effort to change the city’s Japanese look and feel. In 1952, Chiang Kai-Shek’s government began building a major hotel on the site of the Taiwan

Grand Shrine. To better identify Taipei with Chinese culture, architects designed the hotel in the classic Chinese style. When finally completed in 1973, the Taipei Grand Hotel was the tallest building in Taipei and became host to many international conferences and dignitaries. Its 285-foot-high pagoda-inspired roof featured dragon heads on its corners, each pointing outwardly.

During a reconstruction project in 1995, a fire broke out on the hotel’s roof that could not be reached by fire hoses, leading to the collapse of the entire roof. When the hotel re-opened in 1998, the dragon heads, traditional symbols of rain and water, were turned inwardly to help protect the roof from future fires. The presidential suite, containing Chiang Kai-Chek’s desk and his wife’s dressing table, can be rented for about $5,000 a night.

Research has proven that this is mostly untrue. While deep frying foods in olive oil does slightly impact the flavor, the effect is minimal. Other high-heat methods appear to make no difference in flavor.

slice an onion from end to end, it will have a milder flavor than if you slice it across the middle. That’s because cutting an onion releases flavor compounds, and how you slice determines how many compounds are released. When you cut end to end, or with the grain, you cause less damage and release fewer compounds than when you slice through the middle. Slicing through the middle, or against the grain, causes a greater disruption and leaves you with a stronger, more pungent taste.

Going on a coffee run for your coworkers sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? Not only do you GRAMMAR GUY seem considerate of their caffeine needs, but you also offer to pay (usually), which makes you seem generous. You’re the hero of the office! But then you have to take down all their complicated orders, take the drinks away in one of those multi-cup holder things without spilling them all over your car (or your shirt), and then bring the correct drinks to everyone.

Seems like a hassle, doesn’t it? The next time you have this idea, just hand out $5 bills instead.

Everyone wants to be the office hero, but not everyone knows the right time to use “bring” or “take.” The problem is, both words have similar meanings. Both words are verbs that involve carrying something, whether literally or figuratively. “Bring” means to carry something along with you while “take” means to carry something away with you.

For example, when the barista finishes

making everyone’s espresso drinks (quick tip: it’s “espresso,” not “expresso”), you take the drinks from her. Similarly, you would bring the drinks to your co-workers. However, if I, as your boss, asked you to deliver coffee to the accounting department down the hall, I would say, “Please take this bucket of coffee to the accounting team.”

It all comes down to the difference between “toward” and “away.” When the object is coming toward the person speaking, use “bring.” When the object is coming away from the person speaking, use “take.” “Bring” indicates movement toward the writer/speaker, while “take” indicates movement away from the writer/speaker.

Take this advice to heart. Soon enough, your office mates will be bringing you piles of compliments on your journey up the corporate ladder.
