Student reaction to walkout mixed

By Maria Cook and Ann Marie Shambaugh news@currentincarmel.com More than 2,000 Carmel Clay students participated in national walkout protests against gun violence in schools at EDUCATION 10 a.m. March 14. Students at Carmel High School walked from the main school building to the fieldhouse, where a 17-minute indoor rally took place.

Some students held pictures of the 17 victims killed in a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., in February. Many students signed the pictures, which will be sent to the Florida high school to show support.

Students also registered to vote at the event, which required a permission slip signed by a parent to attend. Approximately 20 percent of the student body participated, according to Carmel Clay Schools spokeswoman Courtney Taylor.

Carmel High School junior Sofia Balcius and freshman Isabella Fallahi, who organized the protest, said they were pleased with the turnout and the overall atmosphere at the rally.

More than 1,000 students at the middle school level participated in the walk out at their own campuses. Taylor said approximately 300 students walked out at Clay Middle School, 300 at Carmel Middle School and 500 at Creekside Middle School.

Clay Middle School eighth-grade student Sydney Rickel said she decided to participate in the walkout because she believes gun reform needs to be taken more seriously and to show that teens can make a difference.

She said she was among many students who felt the district got “far too involved for a student-led protest” by not allowing students to go outside. She said many students were planning to protest on the school track but teachers stood at every door preventing students from exiting.

“Students were starting to get frustrated,” she said. “What’s the point of a protest that’s supposed to give us answers when we have no one to be seen by?”

She said teachers “chased after” students who attempted to head outside and that students who left the building had to fill out

Taylor said that 34 students at Clay Middle School went outside and attempted to walk out to the track and that teachers stood by doors as a “safety precaution.” She said the principal was stationed by the track to monitor the situation and those who went outside signed their names so the school could make sure everyone was accounted for. She said parents were notified that their students went outside of the building.

Taylor said that three CHS students chose to walk outside to protest instead of attend the event in the fieldhouse. She said their parents were notified and administrators met with the students to discuss school safety.

“Keeping it indoors was a student decision.

We would’ve worked with students if they wanted to be outside,” she said. “Student leaders didn’t want weather to be a factor. When it comes to having their voices heard, because you never know what the weather is going to be like, that was one of the factors.”

Though some opponents of the walkout had expressed concerns that students might walk out of class to skip out on schoolwork, CHS organizers Balcius and Fallahi stated that all students participating “clearly cared” about gun violence and that many were “visibly moved, emotional and crying” during the rally.

“If any students did just come to skip class, then I hope they learned something,” Balcius said.

Cathedral donation – Marshall Dixon, emeritus professor of physics and astronomy at Butler University, has given a $2 million gift to Cathedral High School in honor of its upcoming 100th birthday.

The donation will help support a new Innovation Center to expand the school’s commitment to STEM education. Dixon has published a physics book with Cathedral teacher Adam Hibshman.

Youth volunteers selected – Thirty-four students have been selected to be new youth volunteers at Conner Prairie for the 2018 season. Carmel students selected are Audrey Scull, Jamie Emerson, Victoria Simich and Lillian Zaharako.

ALS fundraiser – The ALS Association Indiana Chapter will host a March Madness-themed fundraiser at 6 p.m. March 22 at the Renaissance Hotel North. Carmel Clay Schools soon may adopt a non-fraternization policy that establishes boundaries for employees EDUCATION in “personal relationships,” which include those of a romantic or intimate nature.

The policy was introduced at the March 12 school board workshop meeting, two months after former Supt. Nicholas Wahl and Human Resources Director Corrine Middleton resigned. CCS spokeswoman Courtney Taylor confirmed that the new policy is related to the resignations.

The proposed policy states that individuals in close, personal relationships may not work in positions with a “direct, indirect or perceived reporting relationship” between the two or where one could influence the other’s terms or conditions of employment.

The district’s current guidelines don’t prohibit such a relationship. The board did not discuss the policy at the workshop except to confirm that it is expected to be voted upon at the March 26 meeting.

When asked to provide a copy of the policy to Current, Colleen Nobis, administrative assistant to the superintendent, stated in an email, “The policy is still under review and subject to change,” adding that she would send a copy once it had been approved by the school board.

On March 16, Taylor provided a copy of the policy and said that Nobis had been mistaken, that requests to review policies are treated as public records requests.

According to Luke Britt, Indiana’s Public Access Counselor, policies should be made public once introduced. He said a “deeper” problem could occur if the board is developing policies “behind closed doors.”

“If they all seem like they know everything before they go to a meeting and then they have very little discussion, to me that’s a violation of open door law,” he said.

School board President Layla Spanenberg said policies originate in the two-member policy committee, which is open to the public if three or more school board members are present. The proposed policies are stored in a database.

“School board members have enough time to look at it,” she said. “If they have questions, they’ll call one of the two committee members.”

She said board members are “happy” to share proposed policies with the public.

Parents concerned with new elementary classroom model

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel Clay Schools announced a plan last week to combine high-ability students and general education EDUCATION peers in elementary school classrooms beginning this fall, but some parents say the changes are a step in the wrong direction.

The Total School Cluster Grouping model identifies students as high achieving, above average, average, low average and low, although only the high-achieving students know their status. The goal is for classrooms to have no more than three of those groups represented, with average students in each classroom and high-ability students not being placed in classrooms with lower achieving students.

Currently, the district places its highest achievers in self-contained classrooms.

Some parents of these students are concerned that the new model will be detrimental to their children’s education.

“I can see some really big losses, and I’m not sure I’m seeing the gains,” said Melissa Ho, a parent of two high-ability students at Smoky Row Elementary. “There are a lot of

parents here who are saying, ‘I have this gifted child that is going to really struggle in this environment, and at the same time my average student is going to feel defeated in this environment, too.’”

Ho and others have expressed concerns about the impact on teachers because McFarland they may often be faced with preparing different lessons for students at various levels within the classroom.

Gaya Boyers, who has a daughter identified as high-ability at Smoky Row and a son taking honors courses at Carmel High School, worked as an instructional aide at Smoky Row last year and spent time in high-ability and general education classrooms. She said the TSCG model seems like “a huge step backwards.”

“When I would circulate around a classroom I’d spend a lot of time trying to get kids more engaged on the task at hand, unless I was in the challenge room. It was a totally different atmosphere,” she said.

“Unless they tell us we’re going to add more adult involvement in the classroom, I just don’t see kids at any level getting the

attention they’re going to need.”

At a March 12 school board workshop, CCS Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Martha McFarland said the model has been tested at Mohawk Trails and Orchard Park elementary schools with positive results.

Although the school Zheng board did not and will not vote on the classroom changes, several board members offered feedback.

School board member Lin Zheng, who teaches both honors and general education students at the college level, said she has many concerns, from additional teachers being required to learn how to create highability lessons to the impact on students.

“I’m concerned that high-ability students may not get as full attention as they would have in the self-contained classes,” she said.

CCS announced the change in a March 13 letter sent to parents of high-ability children. Ho and Boyers said that was the first official communication they received from the district regarding the matter.

The letter lists several benefits of TSCG. They include:

• Helping teachers more effectively and efficiently meet the diverse needs of their students.

• Increasing opportunities for collaboration among high ability, general education and special education staff.

• Weaving the benefits of evidencebased practices for high-ability students into the fabric of all educational practices.

• Improving the representation of traditionally underserved students identified over time as above average and high achieving.

The letter states that teachers and specialists will work with elementary administrators to make recommendations for next year’s classroom placement.

Carmel Teachers’ Association President Pete O’Hara said CCS teachers will embrace the new opportunities.

“While there will be challenges and there are concerns about the district’s plan to change high ability education, teachers are eager to continue do the best job possible for their students,” he stated in an email.

CCS did not provide responses to questions regarding the matter submitted by Current as of press time.

The Indiana State Legislature has passed a bill to prevent municipalities from banning short-term rentals CITY NEWS such as Airbnb. The bill, which was signed March 14 by Gov. Eric Holcomb, allows limited regulation of these types of rentals.

The Carmel City Council passed an ordinance Jan. 8 to regulate the use of shortterm rentals. Carmel’s law is stricter than the state’s version. Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said Carmel has been told by its attorneys that the city is grandfathered in, and therefore exempt from the state’s new law.

The bill grandfathered in city ordinances passed before Jan. 1. Carmel passed its ordinance about a week later, but attorney John Molitor, who advises the city on zoning matters, said he expects Carmel to be exempt from the bill. He added that Carmel has had stricter regulations in effect for many years.

Carmel’s ordinance allows short-term rentals such as Airbnb to operate in the city as long as certain requirements are met.

The ordinance creates an exemption that allows homeowners wanting to list a rental on Airbnb to pay a $100 application fee and undergo a review from a Board of Zoning Appeals hearing officer. There is a $50 annual fee for renewals. Carmel’s law only applies to permanent residents of a home to prevent someone from buying a house for it to be solely used as a short-term rental.

The city council also amended the law to allow for use of short-term rentals on select occasions, such as the Indianapolis 500, NCAA Final Four, PGA golf tournaments or major conventions. $5.6M approved to expand park

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com West Park is one step closer to major enhancements planned on its west side after the Carmel Clay RECREATION Board of Parks and Recreation approved nearly $5.6 million for the project, known as The Groves, at its March 13 meeting.

The board rejected all bids for project at its February meeting because they came in higher than anticipated. After the design team made changes to the scope of the project, the new price tag from Gibraltar Construction is still $200,000 higher than officials wanted to pay, but CCPR Chief Operating Officer Michael Klitzing said the budget has enough contingency funds to cover the difference.

“I don’t see where there’s significant cost savings to try to further make amendments to the contract,” he said, adding that items stripped from the plan could be built in later phases.

The Groves is planned to include an 8,000-square-foot program pavilion, loop trail in the woods, parking and entrance drive. It also will include a playground, with

equipment purchased separately, that has led to concern from some nearby residents in the Saddlebrook neighborhood.

“It is our understanding that the nature playground will sit about 100 yards from several of our homes that have previously enjoyed the privacy provided by the woods,” states a letter from The Saddlebrook at Shelborne Home Owners Association to the board. “It should be noted that when the leaves are fallen, a playground this close could compromise privacy.”

The letter also states that the HOA wants to see the playground area moved from its planned location in the woods to a space planned as part of the paved driving area with the woods as its northern border.

Former CHS coach now leading Special Olympics Indiana high schools fielding teams for state competitions in Unified Sports, taking part in programs focusing on leadership development, disability awareness and anti-bullying. More than half of all Indiana high schools are now participating in the program.

Mohler said there might be opportunities to bring the program to college.

“We’re not in every Indiana high school, and that’s a dream,” Mohler said. “We have Special Olympics programs in 72 of the 92 counties in Indiana, and it would be nice to be in those last 20.”

Mohler said the nonprofit aims to provide educational and nutritional information to help their athletes perform to the best of their ability “There has never been a time in our history that I have been more optimistic about the possibilities and the future,” said Furnish, who had served as CEO since 2007.

“The organization is thriving as we continue to expand our sports programs, support exponential growth in schools, bring athletes up as leaders, and dedicate ourselves to the health and fitness of athletes. And those of us who have worked with Jeff know his many gifts, work ethic and dedication to the cause we serve.”

Mohler said he hopes school-based programs lead to more people joining community-based programs.

“There is no retirement age for athletes or volunteers in Special Olympics,” Mohler said. “They might shift sports but there is something for everyone.’’

Sports helped shape Jeff Mohler’s life.

So, he has dedicated his career to helping others do that as well as a Special Olympics SPORTS Indiana executive.

Mohler, who had been chief operating officer and vice president of programs since 2007, was named president and chief executive officer by the board of directors in January. Mohler replaced president Michael Furnish, who Mohler retired after more than 40 years as a volunteer, staff member and executive.

Mohler, who has two stints with Special Olympics totaling 15 years, has been a Carmel Middle School boys and girls cross country and track and field head coach for three years and a boys cross country and track assistant coach at Carmel High School for five years before stepping down after the 2017 track season.

The 1990 CHS graduate competed in cross country and track in high school. Mohler lives near the Carmel-Westfield border. He has a Carmel address but his children go to Westfield schools. His daughter, Lydia, is a Westfield High School sophomore and son, Owen, is a fifth-grader at Westfield Intermediate School.

Mohler was at Indiana University working on his master’s degree in nonprofit management when he served a college internship with Special Olympics in 1997.

“I really had an affinity for helping people, not just people with disabilities, but it worked out that way,” Mohler said.

Mohler, who also ran at Indiana Wesleyan University as an undergraduate, said it was a natural fit to stay within the sports world.

“I learned a lot about myself through sports,” he said. “I did fairly good academically in school but it really didn’t help me find out who I wanted to be as much as sports did.”

Sports taught Mohler the importance of Furnish working as a team.

“I learned about life through athletics,” he said. “I want to give back to the community and give back to people with intellectual disabilities. Sports has a transforming power if we let it. It brings people together that normally wouldn’t socialize together. That’s the same when it comes to Special Olympics. Our athletes are able to make friends with people in the community that they normally would not have the opportunity to do so.”

Mohler played an integral role in establishing the Champions Together program, a partnership between Special Olympics Indiana and the Indiana High School Athletic Association, supported by Unified Champion Schools funding and dedicated to promoting social inclusion and providing opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities to compete in sanctioned high school athletics. The partnership has grown under Mohler’s direction, with nearly 100

Dorothy (aka Lori Mansell-Solinski) tap danced her way into people’s hearts when Toto joined her on stage. For more than 10 years, she has led a group called the PrimeLife Follies as part of the PrimeLife Enrichment Center in Carmel. The volunteer entertainment group has members from their late 70s to late 80s and travels year-round to local retirement homes to bring joy to residents. Maybe Toto will become a member of the group, too!

Chairman works alongside son

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com James Bednarski is the new chairman of CarmelFest, the annual two-day Fourth of July festival put on by CARMELFEST the Carmel Rotary Club.

Moreover, he will get assistance from his 16-year-old son as Bednarski presides over the event with the largest attendance in Carmel.

But Connor Bednarski won’t just be performing normal volunteer duties at the event. He’s on the CarmelFest board with his dad this year and will be in charge of a new section of CarmelFest: ExtremeZone.

The new concept at the Center Green will provide entertainment for teenagers too old for the Kid Zone but too young for the North Zone. Organizers are considering attractions such as Monster truck inflatables, a “Ninja Warrior” obstacle course and other interactive activities.

Connor will be in in charge of it all.

“Yeah, I’m nervous,” he said with a laugh.

James said volunteer work is one way he likes to bond with his son. They’ve worked side-by-side at CarmelFest, the International Arts Festival, at food pantries and other community projects. They enjoy working at the Merciful H.E.L.P. Center at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. The center provides services such as a food pantry and furniture donations for those in need.

“It’s actually kind of fun,” James said.

“We get to spend time together and (share) responsibilities together. It’s time for both of us to grow.”

James said he never tries to force anything on his son, but Connor is naturally interested in serving others.

“It’s kind of an open invitation,” Connor said. “It’s usually stuff I like.”

“There’s no ‘He has to be there,’” James chimed in.

Connor is pretty busy overall. A Carmel High School junior, he plays bass clarinet for the school band. He played soccer with Carmel Dads’ Club and is a part of the Do Something Club, a volunteer organization, at school. His latest big project is being a candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Indiana Chapter’s 2018 Student of the Year. As part of his campaign, he’ll try to raise as much money as he can for research. The winners who raise the most money will be honored March 17.

“I like being involved in the community,” Connor said. “Being engrossed in the community is rewarding.”

His father will have a busy year, too. After five years volunteering for CarmelFest,

It’s a big job that takes year-round planning and includes the city’s fireworks display, the Fourth of July parade and the two-day festival that has several different zones and includes games, amusement park rides, food vendors, live music, booth space and more. It’s a massive undertaking that’s mostly volunteer-driven. Although the City of Carmel provides grant money, the Carmel Rotary Club organizes the event and raises money to pay for the entire operation.

“It’s probably the biggest event in Carmel,” James said. “It’s a way to give back on a really big scale.”

All of the money made from CarmelFest, with a big lift from areas such as KidZone, allows the Carmel Rotary Club to provide grants to local nonprofits every year.

James has big plans for 2018. One thing that will be convenient for this year’s guests is the new Veterans Way Parking garage, which creates about 700 parking spaces next to the festival.

Dye course among new exhibits

By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis opened the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends CHILDREN’S MUSEUM Experience March 17. The expansion focuses on health education and physical fitness and allows participants to experience some of Indy’s famous sports attractions on a much smaller scale.

The Pete and Alice Dye Golf Experience presented by Henry and Christine Camferdam is one of 12 sports experiences. The Dyes are Carmel residents and renowned golf course designers. Their first wellknown course was Crooked Stick Golf Course in Carmel.

“They have around 150 courses around the world they’ve created,” said Kimberly Harms Robinson, the museum’s director of public relations. “They wanted to have a legacy course where children and grandchildren could play, because as they were developing their own courses they had their kids growing up on the courses.”

McRoberts makes impact at IU

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com After leaving the University of Vermont following one season, Zach McRoberts figured he would become BASKETBALL a full-time student at Indiana University.

“When it happened, I was pretty much done,” said McRoberts, who helped lead Carmel High School to two Class 4A state basketball championships. “I wasn’t really sure I was going to play again. Obviously, having the opportunity to come back was special for me, and it continues to be.”

McRoberts got the itch and joined IU as a walk-on. McRoberts played in 31 games, starting three, during the 2016-17 season.

He averaged less than a point per game but displayed his value in other areas and earned more playing time as the season went on.

McRoberts said he appreciates that former IU coach Tom Crean gave him a chance after he had been away from the game for a year.

Under new coach Archie Miller, McRoberts saw limited action early in the season.

However, he started the final 17 games for the Hoosiers, who finished 16-15.

“I think everybody needs time to get adjusted with the new system and new coaches,” McRoberts said “Players get a feel for coaches, coaches get a feel for players. After time in practice, I was able to carve out a little bit of a role.”

team lead in steals and has been a steady rebounder, but his true contributions often aren’t reflected in statistics.

“He’s got great versatility, and he’s got great instincts,” Miller said. “Definitely, his length is something that gives him an advantage.”

His tenacious play has made McRoberts a crowd favorite.

“Obviously, that’s the fun part of it,” McRoberts said. “Playing hard is what I try to do. I try to be that scrappy player, and if the fans appreciate it, that’s always nice.

It’s always nice to help the team win, so that’s a major part as well.”

McRoberts’ father, Tim, played at Butler.

His brother, Josh, a 6-10 CHS and Duke standout, has played 10-plus NBA seasons.

Most of us have life insurance, a retirement account and a house. Some of us have a will that we made out LEGAL years ago when we were worried about who would take care of our children if we died. All of us do not have to worry about the first $11.2 million of our estates being taxed by Uncle Sam. However, when was the last time you thought about how your asset ownership, beneficiary designations, wills and trusts coordinate for the benefit of your heirs? An effective method to achieve practical estate asset distribution simplicity is to coordinate the use of asset beneficiary designations with a separate trust agreement.

Life insurance and retirement accounts are assets traditionally structured for distribution upon the death of the owner by direct beneficiary designation. These beneficiary designations have priority over any other instruction you may have established in writing in a will or trust. Under Indiana law, every asset is capable of ownership as a transfer on death (TOD) asset. Real estate, bank accounts, stocks and investment accounts, cars and other tangible assets all may convey a TOD beneficiary designation, allowing the owner to name the beneficiary of each TOD asset separately, if desired.

Coordination of a TOD asset designation strategy may be applied to provide both direct and timely financial benefit to your heirs for some assets (for example, life insurance proceeds) and practical administration structure for other assets (for example, your residence) to allow your chosen representative to sell or distribute for your heirs to receive, either outright or in trust.

This structure is accomplished by establishing a revocable trust agreement designed to receive title to the owner’s designated TOD assets. Those assets are administered after your death by your chosen trustee.

Carmel artist Galina Alkhutova discovers passion for painting miniatures in retirement

By Desiree Williams news@currentincarmel.com Galina Alkhutova grew up in an artistic family. Her brother is a tattoo artist, her sister creates jewelry COVER STORY and her mom was a painter. Since childhood, Alkhutova dreamed of painting, but it wasn’t until she moved to the U.S. that her dream came true.

“I moved here because the Soviet Union was broken, and it was, especially in Ukraine, very bad,” she said.

Alkhutova, 62, came to the U.S. with her mother in 1996. But it wasn’t until 2010 that she began devoting time to art. She participated in her first art exhibition in 2012 and has been part of several other events and festivals throughout the Midwest, which she said would not have been possible without support from her husband, Rich, and the rest of her family, which includes three daughters and four grandchildren.

This month, she will present and discuss her unique miniature paintings during the Celebrations of Creativity and Craftsmanship series at noon March 28 at the Museum of Miniature Houses in Carmel.

“I feel excited,” she said. “I was very glad that they are interested.”

Just a dream

Because she didn’t have a formal art education and didn’t feel she could keep up with her talented siblings, Alkhutova decided to pursue physics. She graduated from Simferopol State University in Ukraine in 1980 with a master’s degree in physics and began working in computer programming.

first learning English. Alkhutova worked in alterations to support her family while taking language classes. She returned to computer programming in 1999 and later began a 14-year career with IU Health as a web developer.

Painting became a priority for her in 2010 when a friend invited her to a Wine and Canvas party and she fell in love with acrylics.

“The next day, I went to the art supply store, and I bought paint and brushes and paper and whatever I needed,” Alkhutova said. “From that moment, I started painting every day.”

Alkhutova wanted to have some formal art education, so she attended classes at the Indianapolis Art Center for the basics and then taught herself the rest.

“I really appreciate the opportunity that

this country gave to me so I can learn to do something that I dreamt about, even when I was 55 years old,” she said.

A passionate profession

Alkhutova is an abstract expressionist and contemporary artist. Her pieces vary in size from several feet to mere inches and include gels, modeling pastes and natural materials for texture.

She said painting is therapeutic and she is inspired by memories, emotions and mood. Some days, the pieces will be light and airy while others will be a bit darker.

“I start and I just feel I need to use one color, and then I feel I need to use another color,” she said. “The painting (tells) me what to do. It comes from inside.”

Alkhutova ventured into miniature art because she loves to execute detail. She said

she often uses toothpicks as brushes and barely takes breaths as she paints because it is so challenging.

“It takes more time to do small details, but it’s an exciting process when you see how it looks,” she said.

Elaine Mancini, executive director of the Museum of Miniature Houses, sought out Alkhutova because of her work in miniature, which Mancini said is beautifully done.

Mancini developed the museum’s creative series three years ago to showcase local talent and draw attention to the unique work of miniature art. She has invited poets, musicians, writers, oral historians and more to present their work to audiences.

“We’re giving opportunities to a lot of artists who never had this kind of opportunity before,” Mancini said. “They’ve been in shows, but this is a whole different thing.”

Alkhutova will bring miniature abstract and contemporary paintings to her showcase at the museum. The paintings, which will be for sale, range from 1 by 1 inch to 4 by 4 inches.

Commentary by Terry Anker Wisdom can come from the strangest of places. The same is said, too, of the lack thereof. Having been in the business of either being young, or being co-domiciled with the young, most Americans can say they’ve watched an episode or two of “The Simpsons.” Amongst its accolades, it is the longest-running sitcom, animated series and scripted prime-time series. We are amused by the clever catch phrases, Marge’s piled-high blue hair and Homer’s hapless, yet boundless, commitment to “the boy, the girl and the baby.”

During its 28-year run, to date, we have come to know and care about the rag-tag cast of characters – their flaws, insight and machinations. Each plays a role as the relational drama, wrapped in more than a dollop of slapstick, unfolds neatly in less than 22 minutes. The beloved, but often ignored, patriarch of the clan is Abraham Jedediah “Abe” Simpson II – mostly called Grandpa.

Abe once remarked, “I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now, what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you.”

Aside from getting a quick laugh and making a solid point, the old man has shared the secret of the longevity of the series (and perhaps of a happy life). It is ethereal. We cannot hope to contain it. We cannot expect to stand still and be on it. In fact, and by its very nature, it moves around. And, so what that it does? The elder Simpson, like the show itself, adapts as times change but doesn’t obsess over being too much it. The family is stable. The attire is identical. And the sofa, one of the longest-running gags in television, is still pushed against the wall. Is it what it’s cracked up to be?

I know that some of you may be questioning why I am running for the Hamilton County Council District 4 seat, currently held by Paul Ayers, with the election being held on May 8. Please allow me to explain.

When I ran for clerk-treasurer, I promised my supporters to work on a number of initiatives, including the following: 1) prepare a clerk-treasurer’s organizational structure for transition to become a second-class city; 2) review all systems for cost effectiveness and paper-flow reduction; 3) establish the Carmel Bond Bank; 4) build stronger relationships with area fiscal officers; 5) analyze current inhouse payroll system versus third-party payroll provider to achieve cost savings; 6) competitively bid the city’s financial services contract for cost savings; 7) enhance use and knowledge of the city’s public document archiving system; and 8) secure the Government Finance Office Association’s Certificate of Accounting Excellence on the city’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports, which the city

was last awarded in 2006.

Today, I am happy to report that these goals have been substantially met and we were thrilled to be awarded a Certification of Excellence for our financial report we submitted last year.

I felt it was important that I find a way to continue to serve our residents. I wish to utilize all that I have learned from my experience by running for the Hamilton County Council District 4 seat, which includes an area from 116th Street west to the Hamilton/Boone County line, east to Gray Road and north to 296th Street. The cities include northern Carmel, Westfield and Sheridan.

As you know, this new job presents more challenges. County council is the fiscal body of county government. It is my hope to bring the fiscal officer expertise to the council.

I wish to be your voice as the next Hamilton County Council District 4 member. I am asking for your vote on May 8.

We’ve been hit! The 2018 plague has finally reached the Wilson abode, and though I’m apparently immune, the HUMOR mental strain of dealing with a sick kid has taken a toll (how long ‘til spring break?)

Two weeks ago, the nurse from Tiny Dancer’s school called and left a cryptic voicemail: “Your daughter is running a lowgrade fever. She’s been asleep for an hour but we don’t want to check her again in case she’s over 100.” If a student records higher than that, they cannot return to school for at least 24 hours. God bless her, the nurse didn’t want to be responsible for my youngest missing more class time than was necessary.

We skipped the pediatrician (who’d just say it’s viral and to drink lots of fluids) and treated her flu-like symptoms at home with ibuprofen and Sunny D. TD recovered and made it another 10 days before she was struck down again. When the thermometer reached nearly 103, I hauled her to the nearest MinuteClinic, where she tested negative for both flu and strep, though even the nurse practitioner wasn’t sure she had “gotten good swabs.” This was when I made a fatal error: I went online.

According to the stupid internet, TD could have anything from mono to Lyme disease, but if it was undetected strep, my baby was at risk for rheumatic fever and possible heart failure. For two nights, I lie awake wondering if an ER run was in our future, so I finally made an appointment with the doctor, who looked at me and said, “It’s viral; drink lots of fluids.”

I need spring break. Peace out.

Those who ENVIRONMENT join the foundation this month will receive 10 white pine trees or 10 white flowering dogwood trees at no cost.

“White pine trees or white flowering dogwoods will add beauty to your home throughout the year,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dogwoods are known for their showy spring flowers and red berries that attract songbirds during winter. White pine trees are fast-growing landscape trees that will break heavy winds, making them an ideal addition to any yard.”

The free trees are part of the nonprofit’s Trees for America campaign.

With planting instructions included, the trees will be shipped at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

Arbor Day Foundation members also receive a subscription to “Arbor Day,” the foundation’s bimonthly publication, and “The Tree Book,” which contains information about tree planting and care.

Co-chair Kim Donovan said typically 20 to 30 exhibitors show up to the event.

“We’ve done this annually, and the plan is to invite a variety of local groups to help boost environmental awareness and build an understanding and appreciation for natural landscapes, waterways and greenways,” she said. “Environmentally conscious consumers can really have engaging conversations with those exhibitors and learn a lot more about the products or services or causes those exhibitors are passionate about.”

In the past, exhibitors have provided tree saplings to attendees to take home.

I think that’s what the Earth Day celebration really represents, giving back to nature and all things green and providing consumers news to take home and help the environment.”

Nickel Plate Arts to bring ‘May flowers’ editorial@youarecurrent.com Beginning early May, Nickel Plate Arts will bring “May Flowers,” to its campus as its monthly exhibit.

EXHIBIT The display will feature floral-themed artwork in all mediums from artists of all backgrounds in the Nickel Plate region, which includes the communities of Fishers, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta and Tipton.

Fresh fruit flavors WATERMELON BUDDHA BOWL Citrusy Tahini Dressing: • 3 tablespoons tahini (ground sesame seed paste) • 1/3 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice • 1/4 cup rice vinegar • 1 teaspoon soy sauce • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger • 1/2 teaspoon salt Bowls: • 2 cups seedless watermelon, cubed • 4 mini cucumbers, thinly sliced • 1 cup sweet cherries, pitted and halved • 2 avocados, sliced • 2 cups cooked black rice • 1 cup sliced, toasted almonds Citrusy Tahini Dressing directions: In bowl, whisk tahini, orange juice, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ginger and salt. Mix it up this spring Commentary by Amanda Snider Every spring we receive an influx of customers ready to tackle a decorating project.

DECORATING The most common complaint I hear from our clients is that they love the eclectic look but aren’t confident as to how to achieve it. They complain that when they try to mix different styles and patterns, it tends to look more like a hodgepodge mess from Dr. Seuss as opposed to very chic.

The reality is that it is a little more work to get this look. It’s definitely easier to walk into FurnitureLand USA and buy a 13-piece brown living room set, but that’s just not you, is it?

The new rule is there are no rules. Your home should be a reflection of your personality. The only guideline to have in the back of your mind? Scale. The truth is, you can mix almost anything if the scale is right.

It’s easy to put different patterns together, too, as long as they vary in scale. Mixing stripes, plaids, polka dots, damasks and more is a piece of cake and adds personality to your room. You also can mix different wood tones; in fact, it’s pretty boring if you

don’t. Take a cue from the pros. It’s no coincidence that you’ll see that many designers are now showcasing the kitchen island as a different color and even different material than the cabinets. Many times upper cabinets are different color/finish than lowers, and chairs are a different finish from their dining table partner.

The same is true of mixing all types of metal finishes. Gone are the days of brushed nickel on every knob, handle, hinge and fixture. Ladies, remember how freeing it was the first time you wore gold and silver jewelry...at the same time?

After all, home decor is a lot like fashion.

Neutrals don’t count as colors, either, so don’t worry about mixing those. Mixing different textures and layering them also creates visual interest. Fur pillows, shag rugs and luxurious throws are an easy way to accomplish this polished look.

Take some risks. Make your space your own and surround yourself with the things you love. It’s all part of you and your history.

READERS’ VIEWS Islamic Life Center can strengthen community Editor, As a Jew who grew up in a community in New York state that viewed its demographic growth and emerging diversity—including an increasing number of Jews—with suspicion, I have watched the conversation around the proposed Al Salam Center with interest and growing concern. My Jewish values call upon me to be welcoming of my neighbors and to support them, especially when they are viewed through the same distrustful lens that has been and continues to be applied to my own community.

My family and I were drawn to Carmel when we moved to central Indiana two years ago, largely because of what we saw as the strong community and institutional fabric, made stronger by diversity, that supports and sustains our city. I am saddened and disappointed by attempts made to sow doubt, misunderstanding and fear using conspiratorial and hateful techniques

against any subset of our city’s residents because of differences in religion, ethnicity, race, language, culture or otherwise.

To those neighbors of the future center who are concerned about traffic and noise, I do want to allay your concerns. We live down the street from three churches. Except for bells which chime on the hour and the occasional difficult left turn on Sundays, I appreciate their presence and the sense of fulfillment and community they provide my Christian neighbors.

Our Muslim neighbors have contributed much to our world, our nation and our city.

Supporting a place that they can call their own and on which to build a presence and community will only make our city a better place and contribute to our broader sense of salam (Arabic) and shalom (Hebrew): peace and wholeness.

Editor, Recently, I was traveling a city street when I came upon one of those treacherous potholes we’ve all been finding recently. It was in an area with no shoulder and tight oncoming traffic, so drivers would have no choice but to hit it at full speed.

Fearing an accident might happen, I called the City of Carmel Street Dept. to report the pothole. I figured they were getting hundreds of like reports and this one

would go in a pile to address at some point.

However, what I got was a friendly greeting, a concerned response and a promise to send out a crew.

I had occasion to travel the same course about three hours later and was very pleasantly surprised that it had already been filled! Good service is so refreshing.

Airbnb law a solution in search of a problem Editor, Carmel’s incessant desire for an Airbnb law is a solution in search of a problem. After reading an article (on this topic) in Current, I decided to research how prevalent Airbnb listings were in Carmel. I found five.

These five listings are said to be hurting property values, cutting into hotel profits and upsetting residents throughout the city. Sounds like a public nuisance desper-

ate for regulation to me.

If regulation is necessary, it should be handled at the HOA level. This would solve any disputes at a local level without the unnecessary bureaucratic red tape. On the bright side, the $500 collected from the fees for these five Airbnb’s will get us one step closer to that carousel.

AirWave adopted in NICUs

By Desiree Williams news@currentincarmel.com SonarMed, a medical device company in Carmel, recently announced the adoption of its AirWave Monitoring SysDEVICE tem in neonatal intensive care units at two children’s hospitals in California, and its use is expected to expand.

The AirWave device monitors a patient’s airway while they are intubated. The device uses sound wave technology to provide real-time detection of any endotracheal tube obstruction or movement in lieu of inconsistent monitoring like X-rays or observation.

Jeff Mansfield, inventor of the device, began developing the AirWave as a project for his doctorate study at Purdue University in 1990. He received a National Institutes of Health Grant in 2005, which allowed him to pursue the project. The device officially launched in 2016.

The device sends a sound impulse through its sensor, which connects to the tube, and the responding echoes allow clinicians to detect size of the passageway, obstruction or kinking and movement of

SonarMed CEO Tom Bumgardner said the AirWave prevents three principal intubation issues: clogging, unplanned extubation and movement into the lungs. He said 30 percent of patients experience these complications, with 33 percent of cases ending in serious harm and 2 percent in death.

“We try to be preventative so that we can tell when a problem is about to happen and they can reposition the tube or reposition the baby so that bad things don’t happen,” he said.

How to get on board, collect it, manage it and MARKET RESEARCH how to recruit data scientists to analyze it. Many are now looking toward data-mining techniques and hopes for AI to elevate big data into working and learning solutions, all in real time. But truth be told, most of our clients are still trying to get a foothold on simply utilizing their data.

Let’s look at some of our more meaningful business questions.

The right data?

Has your company struggled with what to do with the data it already has? Take a step back and ask: What do the numbers mean to your business? And what actions should be taken to improve the most important metrics of the business? If the data isn’t feeding into your key performance Indicators, then you are probably capturing the wrong data.

Better decisions This is the crux. What is the point in

capturing data if it doesn’t provide any real insights that allow you to make better business decisions? Successful brands know how they are different and what they do best.

Look for trends and opportunities The beautiful thing about data is the potential to harness it into better products and strategy. Don’t get stuck focusing on data which simply tells you how much and how often. Look for unique groups and segments which signal trends or opportunities. Make sure you have data that focuses on the “jobs to be done.” Once you get to the point of knowing your way around the data, start compiling a list of possible actions you could take to engage what the data is telling you.

Context is key Truth be told, listening is the most powerful thing any company can do. I never fail to be surprised by how much can be learned by simply listening to customers tell their stories.

Chuy’s plans to bring its made-fromscratch Big as Yo’ Face Burritos, smallbatch salsas and fresh-squeezed margaritas to Carmel in the RESTAURANT spring of 2019.

The new restaurant in the former Applebee’s building at 10325 N. Michigan Rd. will be the second Chuy’s in the Indianapolis market. The company began branching out beyond Texas in the late 2000s.

Chuy’s Field Marketing Manager Courtney Jade Pelly said the company selected Carmel because of the success of the Noblesville Chuy’s restaurant. Pelly said the second generation restaurant space gives Chuy’s the opportunity to create a unique interior design.

The Carmel location will be smaller than many of its locations at less than 5,500 square feet, which is reminiscent of the original Chuy’s on Barton Springs Road in Austin, Texas.

By Heather Collins • editorial@youarecurrent.com Gregory Hancock of the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre has shined a new light on the story of Jesus Christ. In “SUPERHERO; the story of a man called Jesus,” Hancock highlights DANCE the women who surrounded Jesus during his last week on Earth.

The popular production will be placed back in the vaults after this year’s Easter weekend performances at 7 p.m. March 30-31 at The Tarkington, the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Hancock said the production is boundless, with no set time or place, fluid gender roles and contemporary rock music.

The relationships Jesus had with the women that surrounded him including Mary Magdalene, Claudia and Veronica are at the forefront of the full-length ballet performance.

Hancock said he found it fascinating that a woman was at the forefront of many of the most significant events in Jesus’ last days, including how Jesus first revealed himself to a woman and how a woman found his empty tomb. Hancock interweaves the stories of the women and Jesus in a classical arc storyline that evolves from a rock concert to a more classical piece.

An Easter weekend tradition, Hancock said the production has become a spiritual experience rather than simply entertainment.

Hancock said his goal with all of his pieces is to move beyond the art and make it an experience.

Hancock said the production stays true to the story. He read different Gospels and studied popular portrayals of the story of Jesus Christ for the production. In 2006, he wrote out the scrolls, containing the writings from the Gospel in Hebrew,

Greek and Latin, by hand that serve as the backdrop for the production’s opening scene.

GHDT company dancer Abigail Lessaris portrays Judas Iscariot, a role traditionally played by a man. “SUPERHERO; the story of a man called Jesus” was the first production Lessaris ever saw at the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre in 2006 when she was 9 years old. Lessaris said she fell in love with the part of Judas, who also was portrayed by a woman that year.

Lessaris has played a variety of roles in the production each year, but this year Hancock reprised the part of Judas as a woman and gave Lessaris her dream role.

“It’s a very athletic role, which is challenging as a female,” Lessaris said.

Lessaris said she enjoys the physical challenges of taking on a male part as well as how much she differs in real life from the cool, rebellious and tormented character.

Lessaris said she’s excited to reprise the role as a female dancer and break through stereotypes.

“There has been a very big rise of tackling male and female equality,” Lessaris said.

The production not only breaks through gender roles, it also tackles the story of Jesus in a way that’s compatible and palatable to religious and non-religious audiences.

“I think for people who connect it religiously, it is the story of Jesus and it is the story of his life,” Lessaris said. “But even for people that don’t connect to it religiously, it’s still a beautiful story of a man who did the unthinkable.”

Maureen Akins’ first stage play with a speaking role will be in Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Nile” March 22 to 31 at The Cat Theatre, 254 1st Ave. SW, Carmel.

“I have been in various productions as a dancer and choreographer. However, this role is my debut as an actress,” Akins said.

Akins, a Zionsville resident, portrays Kay Ridgeway Mostyn.

Fishers resident R.C. Thorne is returning to acting after a long hiatus.

“It’s been almost 27 years since I’ve done live theater,” Thorne said.

A year ago, Thorne stepped onto a film set as an extra on “Empire.”

Honoring a Sufi saint Commentary by Don Knebel Fatehpur Sikri is one of northern India’s most visited sites. Its most popular building honors a 16th-century saint.

TRAVEL Akbar, considered the greatest ruler in India’s history because of his military prowess and religious tolerance, became the third Mughal Emperor in 1556 at age 13, with his capital in Agra. Akbar soon captured a large portion of north central India but lacked an heir. In about 1568, Akbar traveled to Sikri, a village 22 miles west of Agra, where he consulted Sheikh Salim Chishti, a Sufi Muslim mystic, in his cave. Sheikh Salim told Akbar that he would soon have a son. A short time later, Akbar’s wife, Mariam-uz-Zamani, gave birth to a boy in Sikri, whom they named Salim, who, as Jahangir, became the fourth Mughal Emperor. In gratitude, Akbar built a magnificent walled city around Sheikh Salim’s cave.

The city, named Fatehpur Sikri, included a large mosque just inside its enormous southern gate. Akbar moved his imperial capital to Fatehpur Sikri in 1571.

After Sheikh Salim died in 1572, Akbar built

a 350-foot by 440-foot mausoleum for Salim near the north end of the courtyard of Fatehpur Sikri’s mosque. Unlike the sandstone buildings of the rest of the city, the mausoleum was constructed of polished white marble featuring intricately carved screens on the walls. Sheikh Salim’s tomb rested under a dome in the center of the building. Later, Mughal buildings, including the Taj Mahal, drew on aspects of Salim’s mausoleum.

Akbar abandoned Fatehpur Sikri as his capital in 1585 and the entire city was soon deserted. But even today, the entire city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is remarkably well preserved. Visitors to Sheikh Salim’s tomb tie threads to the inside of the marble screens, hoping to persuade the now-famous Sufi saint to grant them a miracle.

As I write this, I’m sitting by myself.

For those of you who love being alone in total silence, GRAMMAR GUY let me let you in on an introvert pro tip: Hang out in the periodical room at your local library. You’ll either be alone or with (at most) three other people reading today’s newspaper (because they were too cheap to pay for a subscription).

I enjoy being by myself. But the word “myself” gets misused more and more as a result of well-meaning people who are unknowingly over-correcting their grammar.

Here’s an example I hear often: If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, feel free to call Adam, Larry or myself. How would you write this without Adam or Larry in the sentence? You wouldn’t say “...feel free to call myself.”

Uou’d say “...feel free to call me.” Now, if you throw back in Adam and Larry, this doesn’t change. “If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, feel free to call Adam, Larry or me.”

You see, myself is a reflexive pronoun.

Others include yourself, herself, himself and itself. These words are never subjects of a sentence; they’re always objects. If you want a good way to remember this, think about when you look down to gaze deeply into

the water of a placid pond and you see your reflection in it. Your inner dialog would say something like, “I see myself in the water.” In the same way you see a reflection of yourself in the water, words like yourself are reflexive pronouns.

Other than using myself as an object, when should you use myself? Use myself when you are both the subject and the object of the same sentence: I can see myself spending more time hanging out in the periodical room. Here, you’re the object of your own action.

Also, use myself to add emphasis to a statement: I myself locked the door so no one else could get in. Or how about: I wrote this all by myself. In both sentences, you could omit myself and the sentence would still make sense; using myself in these cases adds a dramatic flair.

I encourage you to spend some time to be by yourself; hopefully, you’ll enjoy the company.

Position: Youth Advocate Location: Noblesville, IN Type: Full Time Organization: Prevail, Inc. Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Youth Advocate responsible for crisis response, prevention and intervention services for youth victims of crime, family violence and sexual assault. Services include individual and group facilitation for child survivors (ages13-18) of family violence and sexual assault.

Duties: Provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Facilitate at least one support group for teens (ages 13-18), which may include primary and secondary victims of family violence and/or sexual assault. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Center.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.

Competitive compensation package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, paid holidays, and professional development. Salary commensurate with education and experience (starting salary - $16.49/hour).
